Ms. Murtagh’s career spans several renowned hospitality resorts and experiences across the United States. Her impressive track record includes serving as General Manager during the renovation of the legendary Arizona Biltmore, a Waldorf Astoria Resort. She was General Manager at the Hilton Salt Lake City, Resident Manager at the Waldorf Astoria New York in Manhattan, and held key
hospitality positions at the Hilton Waikoloa in Hawaii.
The Broadmoor is also pleased to announce the promotion of David Patterson to the position of Vice President of Food and Beverage. Since joining the resort in 2013 as just the sixth Executive Chef in its hundred-plusyear history, Mr. Patterson has been instrumental in elevating its culinary offerings. He has traveled extensively, immersing himself in the diverse culinary traditions of South Korea, China, Thailand, Singapore, India, Egypt, and Jordan.
Mr. Patterson’s culinary expertise has been recognized on multiple occasions, including as Executive Chef of the Hotel Hana in Maui, where he hosted a prestigious James Beard House dinner. He also gained valuable experience during his tenure as a Sous Chef at Maisonette in Cincinnati, a restaurant that received five stars and five diamonds for 42 consecutive years.
Moreover, Mr. Patterson has worked with renowned chef Alain Ducasse at his New York, Paris, and Monaco restaurants, further expanding his culinary horizons. His extensive experience and passion for the art of cooking make him the ideal candidate for his new role at The Broadmoor.

Within easy reach of numerous national and international locations, The Broadmoor only feels like it’s a world removed.
FROM THE 1930S THOUGH THE 1950S, THE BROADMOOR OPERATED one of the largest private fleets of Cadillac vehicles in the world. The cars were used to transport guests to and from the resort, for sightseeing tours around the region, and for special occasions. The brand was also a favorite of resort founder Spencer Penrose, who personally selected several custom models for the resort and for his own personal use.
To provide guests with transportation to area attractions, Mr. Penrose purchased the local Gray Line Touring Company in 1935. He also provided luxury touring cars for the convenience of guests of The Broadmoor. Initially, he insisted on Pierce-Arrow automobiles, but by the 1930s, he had switched to Cadillacs and the eight-door touring models. By 1955, The Broadmoor had a fleet of more than 75 Cadillacs.
The luxury automobile manufacturer designed special models exclusively for the resort, including six 1959 custom Broadmoor Skyviews. The 12-passenger touring cars boasted V8 engines and Plexiglas panels that spanned the entire roof, providing panoramic views of the mountain scenery. Julie Penrose’s favorite car, a 1937 green flathead V8 sightseeing car, and a 1936 V12 hardtop belonging to the Gray Line fleet, have both been restored to new condition and are displayed at The Broadmoor’s Main and West entrances on sunny days. They are also available with chauffeurs for use by bridal parties, during corporate events, and other special occasions. Here’s a look at several notable vehicles from the resort’s history:
When Mr. Penrose wanted the perfect car as an anniversary present for his wife, Julie, he ordered a custom-built 1928 Cadillac Imperial Coup with a V8 engine and specially designed Hibberd & Darrin body. The Penroses traveled to France to pick up the car and enjoyed its appointments and luxurious ride during a monthlong tour of Europe.
Mr. Penrose purchased this model to become part of his Gray Line Touring Company, which he acquired in 1936. Guests utilized the cars for sightseeing trips, touring, and excursions to popular attractions. In pleasant weather, you will often see a fully restored version of this model parked in front of the resort’s main entrance. It’s also available for special events.
A 1937 custom-made Cadillac was part of the original fleet that served the hotel through the 1950s. The number of these elegant vehicles reached a high of 13 in 1956. The car has been meticulously restored to mint condition and is available for viewing at the resort and for special events and weddings

The Broadmoor Winter Polo Classic revives a century-old tradition.
LAST FEBRUARY, THE Norris Penrose Event Center hosted the inaugural Broadmoor Winter Polo Classic. The event, a joint effort between the resort and the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation, marked a renewed tradition at The Broadmoor, bringing the sport back to the region after nearly a century.
Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose was an avid polo player who maintained stables for over 400 horses on the grounds for both guests and sport. In 1924, he founded The Broadmoor Polo Association and The Penrose Polo Park with fellow enthusiasts in the Pikes Peak area. The resort once had at least four polo fields just east of the property.
However, the Great Depression and World War II cleared those fields and polo action from the region. More recently, polo player and U.S. Air Force Academy graduate Nicholas Francoeur proposed an idea to bring it back, inspired by the annual Snow Polo World Championship in Aspen, Colorado.
More than 800 spectators attended the 2023 Broadmoor Winter Polo Classic to watch The Penrose Polo Team and Emerald Valley Polo square off on a sunny February afternoon on the Norris Penrose Event Center’s arena. Each team fielded three riders and horses, and the game consisted of four seven-minute periods called “chukkers”. Ultimately, the Emerald Valley team emerged victorious (12-9) and took home the Spencer Penrose Polo Park Cup. The horses were provided by Colorado State University’s National Championship program.

Whether it’s accompanying imported meats and cheeses on your antipasto board at Ristorante del Lago, comprising the filling of a bonbon at Café Julie’s, or sweetening a Honey Maker Lemonade at the Golden Bee, The Broadmoor’s proprietary honey is a powerhouse local product and a prime example of the resort’s self-sustaining ecosystem of artisanal ingredients.
This honey, which is produced at The Broadmoor's owner's Eagles Nest Ranch in Northern Colorado, is used in drinks and dishes throughout the resort. Much like the Wagyu beef from Eagles Nest Ranch—home to the most genetically pure herd of Wagyu cattle in America—and the seasonal produce grown in The Broadmoor’s greenhouses, this sweet elixir highlights the tightly closed loop of relationships between the ranch, the resort’s onsite gardens, local purveyors, and small producers around the globe to source the highest-quality ingredients for the resort’s restaurants and culinary programs. For guests, that attention to quality and environmental stewardship results in unparalleled deliciousness and luxury.
The Broadmoor has worked with KennethJames (a.k.a “KC”) Tencza of Illuman Apiary for nearly eight years to produce the 1,500-some pounds of honey used annually at the resort. Tencza, who is also a pastor, originally began learning about beekeeping to spend more time with his daughter, Yara. What started as a hobby has turned into a calling and a thriving family business. “They’re a fantastic family,” says Broadmoor Vice President of Food and Beverage David Patterson. “KC is more in tune with the nature and science of bees and honey production than anyone I’ve ever spent time with.”
Eagles Nest Ranch, a 50,000-acre working cattle ranch, is a carefully managed and tightly interconnected ecosystem. In addition to
Tencza’s hives and the resort’s herd of Wagyu cattle, the ranch also comprises a diverse landscape of farmland, marshes, river bottom, and forest. All of the grains consumed by the cattle are grown on the ranch, which is also a wild game bird preserve, making it a truly biodiverse and dynamic part of Colorado’s natural landscape. Understanding and embracing that complex system is key to Tencza’s approach to beekeeping: “My goal is to have a honey that tastes like Eagles Nest and to represent that sense of place," he says.
“Beekeeping follows the seasons,” Tencza says of his craft. “In a day of beekeeping, I get to participate in something complex, magical, challenging, and rewarding. I am an athlete, waking up before the sun and lifting heavy boxes for hours on end. I am a biologist, approaching the hives with curiosity and respect. Unlike many Colorado beekeepers who transport their hives to California to pollinate during winter, Tencza opts to keep his bees at Eagles Nest year-round. He says this supports a sustainable biology of hardier, healthier bees more adapted to Colorado’s ecosystem. Tencza’s unique appreciation for the environment, attention to detail, and respect for the pollinators “adds something to the honey,” Patterson says.
The honey blending process is also unique: Tencza hand-harvests the honey throughout the season (leaving plenty for the bees, of course), pulling some after successive blooms of the bees’ favorite flowers. He then blends
these harvests to create a well-rounded product that reflects the land’s terroir. “It has parallels to winemaking,” Patterson says.
Eagles Nest Ranch wildflower honey is The Broadmoor’s signature blend and is used property-wide. “That is atypical when you talk about such a highquality ingredient,” Patterson says. “It’s integrated into numerous recipes and applications throughout.”
Honey production at Eagles Nest Ranch has grown year-over-year as Tencza has mastered the nuances of keeping the bees healthy and thriving. If yields are sufficient, guests may even see jars of The Broadmoor’s wildflower honey for sale at Café Julie’s.
Of course, honey is just one such unique and high-quality product used daily across The Broadmoor’s twenty restaurants, cafes, lounges, and bars; in the eighteen kitchens that service the resort’s event spaces; and at The Broadmoor’s three Wilderness Experience properties.
While the culinary operation at the resort is large-scale—encompassing a
staff of more than 1,200 people—the team remains committed to sourcing exceptional ingredients from producers like Tencza.
“That’s such an important part of being a good chef,” Patterson says. “Forging those relationships with people who are harvesting, raising, and growing what we’re cooking.”
Take The Broadmoor’s olive oil, an exceptional-quality product from Castello di Ama, a small-production, 300 olive-tree family farm in Italy’s Tuscan hills. The resort purchases cases and cases of this peppery elixir for cooking regionally inspired Italian cuisine at Ristorante del Lago. The same product is also used for preparing food for banquets and in other restaurants.
The Broadmoor’s extraordinary Wagyu beef program at Eagles Nest Ranch is another standout. “The fact that we are raising our own herd and then handling the butchering and production to bring this exceptional Wagyu beef to our menus across campus is something we’re incredibly proud of,” Patterson says.
While Colorado has a short growing season, The Broadmoor’s horticultural and culinary teams take full advantage of the summer, tending the many gardens and hundreds of hanging baskets of vibrant blooms around campus, growing juicy tomatoes and fragrant herbs at the on-site greenhouses, and buying the state’s best products at peak freshness. “When asparagus is doing well at Milberger Farms in Pueblo, we’re buying as much of that as we can,” Patterson says. “And, of course, everything from the Western Slope—peaches, cherries, apricots, and as much Colorado Olathe corn as they can ship."
While the common perception of an organization as big as The Broadmoor is that it may not be able to focus on local, sustainable, seasonal, and regional food, the resort’s culinary team is, in fact, doing just that. Is it challenging to scale such high-quality ingredients to The Broadmoor’s quantity? Absolutely. But simple, high-quality ingredients are the key to delicious food, especially when they are produced and grown responsibly and in step with the seasons.
The bounty of food produced at The Broadmoor is plentiful. While Broadmoor chefs are efficient in procuring and preparing only as much food as needed daily, there are inevitably leftovers. Rather than send excess food to landfills or the compost heap, The Broadmoor has partnered with Springs Rescue Mission, the largest shelter for people in need in the area, to provide a steady supply of donated food.
El Pomar Foundation and The Anschutz Foundation, both of which are associated with the resort, also donated $50,000 each to purchase a refrigerated truck the mission can use to safely transport prepared food from The Broadmoor and other organizations in the area. In 2022 alone, The Broadmoor donated more than 9,000 pounds of food to the Springs Rescue Mission.

In July, most of us are busy planning outdoor barbecues and picnics. But The Broadmoor’s executive pastry chef Franck Labasse is already working on his signature Christmas treat: panettone.
The domed sweet bread is a tradition on Italian tables in December, with a reputation among bakers as one of the most challenging breads to perfect. Labasse has spent years mastering the technique behind the labor-intensive dessert. “Anything can go wrong at any time, and due to its delicate and airy texture, it is very hard to make perfect,” he says.
For those who have only ever sampled panettone from a big-box store, Labasse’s artisan version—flavored with either citrus or chocolate hazelnut praline—is a revelation. The Broadmoor’s panettone begins in July with the creation of a sourdough starter, or levain, which is refreshed daily for months until sufficiently strengthened. Come the holiday season, the levain is mixed into a sugar- and egg-enriched
hand-cut, prime steaks, chops, and rib is a clear reminder of why this is known as one of the most legendary steakhouses in Colorado. But, the extensive wine list, fascinating cocktail collection and fresh seafood bar ensure La Taverne is also so much more than just a great steak dinner. For centuries, the historic English pub has been the happy heart of the community; not just a place for drinking but a social gathering point for friends and families—and the Golden Bee is no exception. 1. Preheat oven to 450°. Combine tomatillos, garlic, onions, and peppers on a sheet tray. Add a drizzle of oil, salt, and pepper and roast for about 30 minutes. Combine with remaining vegetables.
2. Add oil to a pot over medium heat and start browning the wild boar. Season with salt, pepper, and cumin. Add water or chicken stock and mixed vegetables. Let simmer for 15 minutes. Add tortillas and simmer for an additional 5 minutes, or longer, if you like. Add fresh herbs and lime juice and season to taste before serving.

LOCATED LESS THAN A MILE FROM THE BROADMOOR, SEVEN FALLS
is one of Colorado’s must-see destinations, with seven tiers and 181 feet of cascading waterfalls situated in Cheyenne Canyon among stunning rock formations and sparkling streams.
Now that Restaurant 1858 at Seven Falls has reopened, visitors have another reason to plan their trip. “We’re thrilled to bring this unique concept back to the Seven Falls experience,” says Executive Sous Chef of Restaurants Justin Miller.
The restaurant’s dining room is positioned at the base of the falls alongside a trout stream, and its design, inspired by America’s National Park architecture, is a nod to the gold-rush history of the region. Whether you dine alfresco on the covered patio or inside the cozy, window-lined dining room, expect a picturesque backdrop for your meal.
In keeping with Seven Falls’ scenic western surrounds, Restaurant 1858’s menu focuses on Colorado cuisine. The wood-fired grill is the centerpiece of the restaurant. “Many of our ingredients make their way across that grill before landing on a guest’s plate,” Miller says.
Those ingredients include Colorado Rocky Mountain Red Trout, harvested from pristine waters in nearby Lost Creek Wilderness. The locally sourced fish is featured in seven different preparations on the dinner menu, from Cast Iron Classic to Crispy Southern Fried.
The 1858 Wood Fired Mixed Grill also showcases traditional game proteins that would have been enjoyed by Pikes Peak miners, including a Colorado bison kabob, venison port cherry sausage, and quail. Those who worked up an appetite hiking to Inspiration Point will appreciate the restaurant’s vibrant Hiker’s Salad, which showcases The Broadmoor’s farm-grown kale, marinated roasted beets, carrots, blueberries, granola, and an açai-pomegranate vinaigrette.
Restaurant 1858 is open seasonally for lunch and dinner, and its hours and menus vary throughout the year. In 2025, seven years after hosting its second U.S. Senior Open, The Broadmoor will welcome its third. The 2025 U.S. Senior Open will be contested June 26-29 on The Broadmoor’s famed East Course. Hospitality and sponsorship sales began in late 2022; tickets go on sale in March 2024; and, sometime in 2023, Ben Kimball, the USGA’s senior director of championships, will arrive to go over the setup with PGA Director of Golf Russ Miller and Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Grounds, Fred Dickman.
“We know what to expect,” Miller says. After all, this will be the fourth USGA championship for him and Dickman—and the ninth contested at The Broadmoor. “That doesn’t mean there won’t be changes, but we’re ready for them.”
Championship golf has been part of the resort’s DNA since the debut of its Donald Ross-designed layout in 1918. Setting the tone, Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose invited four of the country’s foremost golfers— U.S. Open champion Chick Evans, PGA champion (and Broadmoor head golf professional) Jim Barnes, future PGA champion Jock Hutchison, and Western Amateur champion Warren Wood—to christen the course with a July 4th match.
Within a decade, the resort had established both The Broadmoor Invitation and Broadmoor Ladies Invitation, both tournaments drawing top amateurs and future major champions. A passel of similarly prestigious national championships followed: six Trans-Mississippi Amateurs, five NCAA Division I Men’s Nationals, three Western Amateurs, and three Women’s Western Amateurs.
By 1959, The Broadmoor had already built a sterling reputation as a championship venue. Staging that year’s U.S. Amateur and seven other USGA championships burnished that reputation to a luster that should only get brighter with the 2025 U.S. Senior Open.
Hospitality tents will go up weeks before the event. A few weeks later, guests and members will be restricted to use the cart path only on the East Course and, for one week prior to the Open, they’ll only have access to the West Course. “With two courses, we can accommodate these restrictions,” Miller says. “We want to put our best foot forward and every blade of grass needs to be perfect.”
The players will all lodge and dine at The Broadmoor. “It’s a short walk for them, which they love,” Miller says. “Another thing is that the USGA has stepped up how it treats caddies—players and caddies will dine in the same location.”
As far as the course setup goes, the USGA’s Kimball will finalize the details with Dickman and Miller next fall. “He’ll take some areas out of play,” Dickman says. “And, in the months leading up to the Open, we’ll gradually narrow the fairways and possibly change some angles off the tee for different looks on the holes.”
One difference, Dickman notes, might come with the 2021 departure of Mike Davis, the USGA’s longtime CEO and course setup advisor. Davis championed graduated rough (the 2018 U.S. Senior Open featured as many as three cuts on some holes) and at least one potentially reachable
par 4. His successor, Mike Whan, leaves setup decisions to Kimball and Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer.
While graduated rough and The Broadmoor’s 331-yard, 2nd hole seem here to stay, some issues remain to consider.
Using the scoring data from the last two Opens, Miller knows that the par-4 10th and par-3 12th—both long holes that played downhill and downwind—were the first and second toughest holes in the last Open. Those are, respectively, the nos. 4 and 16 handicap holes on the course. However, with players averaging a half-shot over par on each, Miller and Dickman are looking at green firmness and other variables that may have spiked those numbers.
Another issue is whether the 611-yard 17th hole, which contestants in the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open played as a par 5, will again be a 517- to 559-yard par 4 as it was in the ’08 and ’18 Senior Opens. That reduces par on the back nine to 34, after a par-36 front nine. In ’08, eight of holes 10 through 18 ranked in top nine for highest scoring average. In ’18, it was seven. So why not stretch out 17 to create an exciting scoring opportunity down the stretch?
“For some reason, the USGA doesn’t like par-71 setups,” Miller says, which means he’d have to convert either the par-5 third or ninth—holes ranked, respectively, 17 and 18 in terms of difficulty—into a par 4. However, in 2022, at the first U.S. Senior Open with Whan as commissioner, par at Saucon Valley was 71. So, 17 could become a
The Broadmoor’s famed East Course has long vexed golf’s greats and amateur players alike. Its demanding layout, tight fairways, and challenging greens each present their own difficulties, but there are a few general tips for playing well on this beautiful mountain course.
Players should narrow their focus to a specific spot—the 80-foot-high Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun on the flanks of Cheyenne Mountain. Putts tend to break away from the monument on nearly every green. “The main thing is keeping the ball on the other side of the flagstick from the monument,” says golf great Tom Watson.
Two-time Masters champion Bernhard Langer described the East Course’s greens as “some of the most severe and punishing in the world.” Shoot for the front, rather than at or above the pin, to set yourself up for a more forgiving putt.
“Always keep the hole between your ball and the mountain,” says Director of Golf Russ Miller, “which will always ensure an uphill putt, even if it doesn’t appear to be uphill.”

A 19-year-old Jack Nicklaus defeated defending champion Charlie Coe, 1-up, on the East Course. The two went into the par-4 18th hole all square, with Coe’s birdie chip stopping an inch from the hole. Nicklaus then sank an eight-foot birdie, “the most important putt I ever made,” to kickstart his magnificent career.
By a score of 8-1, Team USA trounced an inexperienced squad from Great Britain and Ireland, the second of 13 consecutive U.S. victories in the biennial event. Star teammates Barbara McIntire and future USGA President Judy Bell opened a store at The Broadmoor that year.
1967 U.S. AMATEUR
Competing in one of only eight U.S. Amatuers ever contested as stroke play, Bob Dickson edged Vinny Giles by one shot on the Robert Trent Jones-designed West Course to become the first and last golfer since Lawson Little in 1935 to capture the U.S. Amateur and British Amateur in the same year.
Two-time defending champion Juli Inkster, an all-American from San Jose State, easily defeated Cathy Hanlon of SMU, 4 and 3, in the final on the Arnold Palmer-designed South Course. A member of nine Solheim Cup teams, Inkster won 31 LPGA Tour events on her way to the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The 50th edition of the championship marked the coming out party of Annika Sorenstam. Rallying from five shots down in the final round, the 24-year-old Swede came home in 2-under to notch the first of the 10 major victories and 72 official LPGA wins in her World Golf Hall of Fame career.
An event remembered for a black bear clambering across the East Course on Friday saw a big cat lift the Ouimet Memorial Trophy on Sunday. Eduardo “El Gato” Romero of Argentina shot a smooth 6-under—one of only three players to finish in red numbers— to win his second senior major.
The first U.S. Women’s Open course longer than 7,000 yards proved no problem for South Korean golfers So Yeon Ryu and Hee Kyung Seo, who finished tied after Ryu birdied the 72nd hole. Ryu also birdied the third playoff hole to win on Monday, as repeated weather delays pushed back the event.
David Toms took practically all Sunday to separate himself from a logjam atop the leaderboard. Draining long putts on the 16th and 17th holes, the 2001 PGA Championship winner eked out a one-shot victory over Miguel Angel Jiménez, Jerry Kelly, and Tim Petrovic to claim his first senior victory.

The Broadmoor’s greens have always defended par with vexing reliability. Unlike many championship courses, however, these putting surfaces are not sped up for big events. “We always try to average about 10.8 to 11.2 on the Stimpmeter,” Dickman says. “Any faster and you can’t utilize all the best hole locations.” He also appreciates the 2025 event’s late June date. “In ’08, it was in August. When the temperature increases, the number of hole locations decreases.”
The stats bear him out. Players in the hotter 2008 U.S. Open averaged 31.43 putts per round, compared to 32.04 ten years later.
Dickman chuckles when asked about the “mountain effect” on putts. “They’ll probably show that shrine a hundred times on TV,” he
says, referencing the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun on Cheyenne Mountain, away from which putts mysteriously break. “It’s a visual thing. In comparison to the mountain, the course is flat, but it’s still up against the side of a mountain.” Comprised of about “50 to 70 strains of poa annua,” The Broadmoor greens get taken off growth regulators leading up to the Open, allowing Dickman and East Course superintendent Mike Sartori more flexibility to double-roll them. To ensure uniformity of speed, firmness, smoothness and trueness, The Broadmoor is one of the first courses in the country to use the GS3—a golf-ball-sized rechargeable device with sensors that collects more than 15,000 data points as it rolls along a green. The GS3 creates accurate, measurable agronomic benchmarks that Dickman and Sartori can use to make analytics-driven decisions.
Of course, humans need to execute those decisions. In addition to 60 members of the golf and grounds staffs, interns, and fellow superintendents will also help with everything from mowing and bunker fluffing to collecting the flags behind each day’s final group—and before a souvenir hunter does.

BY JON RIZZITHE ACHIEVEMENTS OF HALE IRWIN, BABE Didrikson Zaharias, and more than 148 other Colorado golf icons now have a spectacular new showcase. In honor of its 50th Anniversary, the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame has relocated its museum to The Broadmoor Golf Club.
Both organizations couldn’t have asked for a more perfect union. Since 1973, the Hall of Fame has celebrated excellence; and for more than a century, The Broadmoor has dedicated itself to delivering exceptional service, uncompromising excellence, and distinctive amenities—such as its impeccable East Course, home to eight USGA
Championships and the upcoming 2025 U.S. Senior Open. The Colorado Golf Hall of Fame currently counts 12 Broadmoor legends among its 148 inductees. Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose is among this year’s class of inductees.
Visitors can access the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame Museum through the golf club’s east entrance, where a high-ceilinged lobby featuring a gallery of oversized vintage photographs and shimmering trophy cases leads to an adjacent corridor brimming with treasures.

filled with rare artifacts representing their achievements. An elaborate timeline outlines the history of Colorado golf from 1887 to the present, detailing not only the feats of Hall of Famers, but also the significant championships held in Colorado. Highlights include the first U.S. Open west of the Mississippi River; the first national championship won by an African American player; the defining triumphs of Jack, Arnie, Phil, and Annika—and those won elsewhere by such Colorado players as Irwin, Zaharias, Dow Finsterwald, Barbara McIntire, Craig Stadler, Jill McGill, Nancy Roth Syms, Steve Jones, Jennifer Kupcho, and others.
In addition to players, visitors can also learn about Coloradans who have influenced the game: three USGA presidents, including the first woman, Judy Bell; nationally renowned golf professionals and instructors; numerous course developers, architects and superintendents; administrators, and journalists who have shaped the golf landscape.
“I believe the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame has found a fitting new home at our resort,” Broadmoor President and CEO Jack Damioli says. Guests may enrich their experience by scanning QR codes found throughout the museum for multimedia content, with plans for interactive displays in the future.
Even without the bells and whistles, The Broadmoor’s PGA Director of Golf Russ Miller believes “showcasing the distinguished men, women, and golf championships that have had such a profound impact on golf in Colorado allows our members and our guests to recognize and reflect on the great history and traditions of the game.”
A plaque near The Broadmoor’s practice green pays tribute to Dow Finsterwald, the resort’s former PGA Director of Golf (1963-91), who passed away November 4, 2022, at age 93.
As recently as three years ago, Finsterwald was rolling putts near the plaque with the same smooth stroke that brought him the 1958 PGA Championship and 11 other PGA Tour victories. He’d also carded the first 61 on the PGA Tour, where he made 72 consecutive cuts. He compiled a 9-3-1 record in four Ryder Cups.
“Always working on the short game,” this visitor said to him.
“Every part of my game is short now,” came the reply with a laugh.
Finsterwald’s feats and winning personality made him the perfect successor to “Big Ed” Dudley, The Broadmoor’s legendary PGA Director of Golf who died of a heart attack in 1963. Finsterwald oversaw the opening of the second Robert Trent Jones-designed nine holes on the West course and the full 18-hole South Course designed by his close friend, Arnold Palmer. He helped bring two USGA championships to the resort and captained the winning 1977 U.S. Ryder Cup team.
Finsterwald split his retired years between homes in Colorado Springs and Orlando, where he lived near Palmer at Bay Hill. He strongly promoted the First Tee in Colorado and the Jensen Beach Hibiscus Children’s Center in Florida. He worked on the USGA’s Rules Committee, was inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame and helped design Pikewood National Golf Club, two hours from his hometown of Athens, Ohio.
In the months before he died, he’d regularly have lunch at The Broadmoor’s Grille, walking slowly down Heritage Hallway, past cases displaying shining mementos of a life spent doing what he loved.
The Broadmoor Invitation, an elite golf tournament that had endured for over 70 years and then disappeared for 20. Thanks to the efforts of the club’s PGA Director of Golf, Russ Miller, it’s here to stay.
Miller modernized what started in 1921 as a fiveday competition between the country’s top amateurs (winners included Lawson Little, Charlie Coe, Hale Irwin, and Duffy Waldorf) by turning it into a four-day, flighted, scratch four-ball championship that not only attracted quality competitors but also presented a full menu of activities for their guests or significant others.
“The tournament really takes care of the spouses,” Allen Schlup of Overland Park, Kansas, says. In 2021, while he and fellow Loch Lloyd Country Club member Jordan Wilson ham-and-egged their way to a 17-under
269 to win the Champions flight, their wives got to select from such options as guided hikes to The Broadmoor’s Cloud Camp, cooking lessons with Broadmoor chefs, “or they could go to the spa, swim, play tennis, or go fishing,” Schlup marvels.
A 36-year-old attorney who had competed in numerous tournaments around the country, Schlup teamed with Wilson, who in 2016 finished runner-up in the Invitation with a different partner. Schlup had never played The Broadmoor.
“My wife, Amanda, and I arrived the Sunday before the event to get in a practice round, but even before that, Russ was very thorough and communicative,” Schlup recalls. “From start to finish, everyone we ran into and talked to bent over backward. It was first-class all the way.”
Wilson enjoyed the format. “As opposed to the stress of individual
play, four-ball spills into a better relationship with the people you’re playing with,” he says. “Plus, with everyone staying on property, you enjoy opportunties to interact with the entire field.”
In addition to the top-tier food, service, scenery, and course conditions, Schlup especially appreciated feeling “special” during the event. “They feed you, put your name on a placard on the range like a Tour player, and announce your name on the first tee,” he says. “One of the tee gifts was a custom-fit Callaway Odyssey putter.”
Putting at The Broadmoor is famously tricky, so Schlup asked a starter to educate him about the greens before his practice round.
His reads resulted in a pair of champions’ jackets in 2021 and 2022, when a significantly longer, sterner course setup led to a winning score of three-under 283—14 shots higher than their previous score and seven clear of the runners-up.
“Russ clearly didn’t like our 17-under that first year,” Schlup laughs. “So, he added about 1,100 yards and toughened the pin placements. I can’t wait to see what they throw at us next.”

Easy to learn and challenging to master, pickleball offers a fast-paced mix of fun and fitness.

IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR AN ACTIVITY THAT combines fun and fitness, look no further than that fast-paced sport of pickleball.
A cross between tennis, table tennis, and badminton, pickleball can be played as singles or doubles using fiberglass paddles and a lightweight plastic ball. The game begins with an underhanded serve into the opponents’ opposite square, and players then volley back and forth—known as “dinking”—taking care to avoid the no-volley zone in front of the net called “the kitchen.” Only the serving team can score a point and games are played to 11.
The Broadmoor, an early adopter of the sport, launched its pickleball program in 2017. It has since become a full-blown craze at the resort, including events like pickleball and pizza weekends. Facilities include four
dedicated pickleball courts (three on-site and one at The Broadmoor’s Cloud Camp at 9,100 feet), three certified pickleball pros, and a retail shop stocked with everything from visors to T-shirts to balls and fiberglass paddles from top brands like Head and Onix.
Broadmoor Racquet Sports Director Karen Schott says the resort was also looking for more family-oriented activities, and pickleball was a perfect fit. Aside from being a fun and social sport, pickleball also provides an excellent workout. It’s relatively easy to pick up the game, especially for current and former tennis players.
“Pickleball is an easy game to learn and a difficult game to master,” Schott says. “But it’s the fun and camaraderie that keep players at every level engaged in the game.”
The Broadmoor’s program is rated one of the country’s Top 20 tennis resorts by Tennis magazine. As a Colorado dad and avid hiker, I feel a responsibility to introduce my children to the state’s natural beauty and the many outdoor adventures that can be enjoyed here. The Broadmoor’s prime location at the foot of the Colorado Rockies offers numerous opportunites to fulfill this goal.
The moment we approached the Broadmoor Outfitters desk and saw the extensive menu of activities, my daughters’ eyes widened with excitement. Surrounded by trail maps, hiking boots, helmets, and other gear, we could feel the thrill of the unknown experiences waiting for us.
Our choices included hiking to waterfalls at Seven Falls, a half-day falconry adventure, The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure, a Wild West experience, and The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, which takes you to the top of Pikes Peak. In short, we couldn’t go wrong.
My children are each different, with different likes and interests. The oldest is more curious about the history of the places we go, while my youngest enjoys scrambling over boulders and swinging from trees. My middle daughter thrives on competitive challenges. All three love animals.
Given this diversity, falconry seemed like the perfect choice to satisfy everyone. The next thing we knew, we were in the falconry
center, beginning our lesson where my kids were, well, rapt by the raptors. We began our experience by examining each raptor up close. My children were captivated by these magnificent creatures, as we learned more about them and the “Sport of Kings.” We then ventured outside to watch the raptors fly and witness their incredible abilities in action.
We also walked up Cheyenne Canyon to Seven Falls, the multi-tiered waterfall in the heart of the canyon. The cascading water provided a scenic backdrop for our lunch at Restaurant 1858, where we enjoyed an outdoor table and sampled menu items like Colorado Rocky Mountain Red Trout, Inspiration Point Hikers Salad, Prospector’s Bison Burger, and House Made Texas Wild Boar Green Chili.
We also tried the Wild West Experience, driving up an old stage-coach route with a guide to throw axes and shoot arrows and air rifles. We also enjoyed exploring other trails and features around The Broadmoor property, hiking

Led by a resident master falconer, The Broadmoor Falconry Experience is designed to teach about the birds themselves and the history of falconry. You’ll have the chance to handle a bird of prey, including hawks, falcons, and owls.
Start with the Beginners Lesson, where you will get the chance to interact with a variety of captive-bred, trained birds and hold a trained hawk on your fist. During the Intermediate Lesson, you’ll venture out onto one of The Broadmoor’s scenic trails, where under supervision of an expert, you will cast the hawk into a nearby pine and watch as it follows you from tree to tree, returning to your glove for a small reward. Both experiences are about 1.5 hours long and may be combined.

There’s an oft-quoted line about the approach walk to Seven Falls being “the grandest mile of scenery in Colorado.” It’s certainly impressive in any season, and one of the state’s longest-running privately owned natural attractions. From the entrance gate, follow a paved path along South Cheyenne Canyon Creek and enjoy the waterfalls, staircases, and vista points. Visitors can also pair their walk with reservations at Restaurant 1858, at the base of Seven Falls. The full 3.5-mile out-and-back hike up the canyon, then up several flights of stairs and another trail to Inspiration Point, takes about two hours and climbs 763 vertical feet. Most visitors, however, are content walking only to the restaurant and base of the falls. Walk up the road along South Cheyenne Canyon Creek, which is flanked by impressive rock formations on either side. The flexibility of your Seven Falls experience is part of what’s made it such an iconic multi-generational Colorado attraction for 140 years.
ON MARCH 9, 1883, COLORADO HOMESTEADER JAMES HULL BEGAN WELCOMING GUESTS to Seven Falls. Visitors could hike into the scenic canyon for ten cents a person and picnic at the foot of a magnificent seven-tiered waterfall. Hull built the first set of stairs at the falls and a proper trail to Inspiration Point. Over time, Hull increased his holdings, protecting more land, and visitors arrived on foot, on horseback, and in carriages to see what’s become known as the “grandest mile of scenery in Colorado.”

AS YOUR PAINTED RED RAIL CAR CLIMBS, FIRST THROUGH canyon, then forest, and then across alpine tundra above the treeline, the view through the windows changes like moving through a gallery of life-sized landscape paintings. The conductor shares historical and geological details over the PA system as the train climbs steadily upward. Since 1891, the cog railroad has ferried guests up and down the mountain from the historic depot in Manitou Springs. A $100 millionplus renovation of the historic railway adds new dimensions with new and refurbished trains, a wholly renovated depot, and the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center. The Cog Up, Bike Down Pikes Peak Adventure is a five-hour trip that includes all equipment and transportation and departs from Broadmoor Outfitters booking office on The Broadmoor’s main campus. The road is well-maintained, but this is still challenging with the high altitude, steep drops, and hairpin curves.
ENJOY A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF AMERICA’S MOUNTAIN
It’s all about perspective, and looking through the front driver’s window of one of the most scenic railways in the country as it goes up and down a famous fourteener, as mountains taller than 14,000 feet are known, is quite a viewpoint to have on the Rocky Mountains.
As you sit next to the engineer, you’ll learn about the history of the railway and its construction while enjoying a view straight up the tracks. Cog railways are unique in that they use a toothed middle track alongside the running rails. A gear on the train meshes with the toothed track, enabling the train to safely ascend and descend steeper inclines than are possible with traditional trains. This technology permits the train to traverse the 8.9-mile track with an average incline of 12
percent, climbing a total of 7,000 feet to reach the summit. The first mountain cog railway was the Mount Washington Cog Railway in New Hampshire, which carried its first fare-paying passengers in 1868. You’ll learn all kinds of facts about the train and the scenery as you swivel your neck to take in unobstructed views of the tracks, forest, mountain, and sky.

Ann Alba, VP and Resident Manager noted that she, along with the longtime Broadmoor Team Members, refer to our Whipples and many other “Legacy Guests,” as “Family.” Many properties don’t have the luxury of history, but over our 105 years of service, these relationships are cultivated organically. As Ms. Alba noted, “When we have spent decades together, memories are shared by all.”
The Whipple family’s tradition started with Mrs. Glenn Yarborough, grandmother of a folk singer by the same name. She was a “summer guest” who visited most of her adult life and was adamant that the annual gatherings would continue with her children and grandchildren.
The family name is now Whipple, but they all descend from this grand dame.
Ms. Alba reiterated that this loyal patronage is not uncommon throughout her more than 36 years of stewardship. Many of her guests are four and five generations of Broadmoor enthusiasts, jokingly stating that, “Our Team likes to get them hooked at an early age.” It is evident that the resort is not simply a destination, but rather a part of people’s past, present, and future.
The importance of relationships was taught by her first mentor at the hotel, Mr. Bill Roub, who graciously introduced her to many of these notable families. These generational guests, then tell friends and neighbors about their memories over the years, and from there, new traditions are created. Truly a full circle of service!
From Mr. Roub introducing her to a long list of loyalists, it was evident that the baton needed to be passed on to a more formal program than merely being the “keeper of the memories,” as Ms. Alba refers to herself. It was from this that the Special Services Concierge was founded and flourishes with well over 500 social guests on the list of whom this small, but mighty, team serves from room reservations to dining, activities, and all in between. have succeeded when Christmas cards are shared, invites to family events are abounding, and you find yourself included in family gatherings throughout the generations, from birth announcements to the passing of the old guard. As Mr. Roub taught Ms. Alba, recognition and relationships are the secret ingredient for hospitality.
Anticipating and attending to guests’ needs is a hallmark of the resort. From front desk staff to the executive chef, providing exceptional service is paramount. For example, in his memoir, the late Broadmoor Executive Chef Hank Trujillo recalled a regular guest who liked raisin toast with her breakfast. Despite kitchen staff typically having limited direct interaction with the front-of-house guests, Chef Trujillo’s team was always acutely protective of this request, ensuring that she had a loaf available just for her each day of her stay.
Another legend in the industry, Ms. Heidi Lawrence, has worked at the hotel’s Golf Club for an impressive 53 years and has similar stories. Ms. Lawrence recalls the heyday of the summer guests— up to and through the 1980s—coming from Texas and Louisiana and staying for six to eight weeks. “I always knew what table they wanted—usually by the window or out on the porch,” Ms. Lawrence says. “I knew what they liked to drink and sometimes even what they wanted for lunch before they knew!”
Now 81, Ms. Lawrence has stepped down from being a supervisor to work as a hostess, but still has no plans to retire and is a steadfast ambassador of the Club. Daily, returning guests and longtime members look forward to finding Heidi at the Golf Club podium to capture a moment of reminiscing of days gone by. It is evident that The Broadmoor team turns personal relationships into lasting friendships.
Mr. Roub, who worked at the hotel for close to four decades, spent many of those years as a maître d’ in the main dining room, now known as the Lake Terrace Dining Room. He started as a room service waiter
and ended as The Broadmoor’s first Food and Beverage Director, following Mrs. Julie Penrose appointing him as hotel maître d’.
In a 2014 interview, Mr. Roub recalled developing a special relationship with a high-ranking guest. In the mid-1950s, General Hoyt Vandenberg, for whom the California Air Force Base is named, came to The Broadmoor to recover from cancer treatments. He and his wife were to relax and enjoy the hotel in every way possible for the entire summer.
“The Broadmoor always had a strong relationship with officers and cadets of the academy,” Mr. Roub said. (The U.S. Air Force Academy was being built in Colorado Springs at that time and enrolled its first class in 1955.)
To lessen any stress on the Vandenbergs, Mr. Roub and another room service waiter, Mr. Jim Potticary, were assigned to be available (one or the other) at all times to assist and care for the VIP couple. After a summer of serving General and Mrs. Vendenberg, the couple had become very fond of the Bill and Jim, and vice versa. The night before they left, Mrs. Vandenberg announced to the gentlemen that they were flying back to Washington D.C. on a special plane, which they invited them to see before the “special delivery.”
“So, the next morning, Jim and I were down in front at 10 o’clock in our waiter uniforms. There were two limousines. The Air Force had sent one for the General, and the hotel’s management had ordered one, too. So, she said they’d ride in the one the hotel provided, and we could ride in the Air Force limo—with stars on the front and everything.”
“When we arrived at the airport, there we were: a general, his wife, and two room service waiters. The Air Force band was playing with a reception line filled with dignitaries—more generals, the Mayor of Colorado Springs, and so on. Well, Jim and I were pretty embarrassed. We stepped off to one side.”
“Then, when the Vandenbergs were heading toward the plane, Mrs. Vandenburg turned and called to us and said, ‘Jim, Bill, come on!’” Mr. Roub recalls the plane’s interior as plush and elegant—unlike any plane he’d ever seen.
“Isn’t it wonderful?,” Mrs. Vandenburg said. “When we get to D.C., we’re going to present it to the President. They’re going to call it Air Force One.” So that’s how two room service waiters from The Broadmoor got to preview the iconic aircraft even before the President himself.
As Mr. Roub said in his memoir, although the work was hard and the hours were long, there was something about the hotel that kept him— and many other employees—coming back or staying for most of their careers. There was “a certain cachet, a mystique about the place,” he said. “I couldn’t seem to ever stay away for long.” Ms. Alba noted the same, proudly recognizing that The Broadmoor is now simply a part of her.
Apparently, many guests feel the same.
“Guests don’t just come for an overnight stay, but because they’ve heard about us or read about us, and want to create their own memories.”
WHEN MICHAEL AND SHAUNA SARTORI MET IN THE BROADMOOR employee cafeteria in 2002, they could have never expected that someday they wouldn’t just be friendly coworkers—but they’d be married, with one of their children now working at the resort, too.
That’s just the magic of The Broadmoor.
Today, Michael is the superintendent of the East and West golf courses. Shauna is Membership Director at The Broadmoor Golf Club. They are happily married and enjoy working side-by-side. As they see it, they are a little family within the larger family of the resort’s staff and longtime guests.
And their story is far from unusual. The Broadmoor boasts a surprisingly large number of family members who work together at the resort. Some, like the Sartoris, met at the resort.
Their family ties to The Broadmoor run deep. Shauna’s grandparents honeymooned at The Broadmoor more than 75 years ago, and her family has vacationed at the resort every summer since then. She and Michael were married on the property at Cheyenne Lodge in 2006, and they celebrate every anniversary at the resort.
Their oldest son, Jack Henry, was named by a frequent resort guest, whom Shauna also considers to be family. Jack Henry, now 14, works as a caddy at the golf club. Their youngest child, Max, 9, celebrated his most recent birthday in the resort’s movie theater.
“How many 9-year-olds can say they had a private movie showing at The Broadmoor for their birthday?” Shauna says.

the resort. “It’s way more than work for us—the work is actually the icing on the cake,” Shauna says. “The Broadmoor is about making memories.”
Emily Wallace also met her husband, Damian Wallace, at The Broadmoor in 2009. She was a culinary apprentice and he worked in The Grille.
“His smile—there was something about him. He made me laugh,” Emily says. “I was on a sauté station, he was on the grill, and we were always pushing each other to be the best that we could be.”
Emily and Damian were married the following summer. Today, Emily is the Culture and Engagement Specialist in the resort’s human resources department, and Damian is the Chef de Cuisine at The Grille. Their son, also named Damian Wallace, also works at The Broadmoor as a security officer.
The Wallaces also have two young girls. One of their daughters tells her parents that she’d like to work at The Broadmoor when she gets old enough, too. “To meet the love of her life, like Mommy and Daddy did,” she says.
Macy Miller’s parents also met at The Broadmoor. Her dad was a chef in the Penrose Room, where her mother was an apprentice. At first, Macy says, her mom was annoyed by his “loud mouth,” but they connected at a party, fell in love, and eventually had two daughters— both of whom work at the resort today. Macy is a Conference Coordinator, and her sister, Mia, works in the Boutique where Macy first started in high school. Today, her dad, Justin Miller, is the Executive Sous Chef of the Resort.
“I have to go to my dad for a lot of things, especially custom menus when I’m trying to figure out how to elevate an event and make it special for our clients,” Macy says. “Working with him and seeing his professional side is so rewarding.”
Katie Hogan, Catering Sales Manager, also works at The Broadmoor with her husband, Matt Hogan, who is Head Baker. Sometimes Katie visits Cafe Julie’s with couples planning a wedding at The Broadmoor. She enjoys showing off the ornate pastries and breads made by her husband.
“It’s special to see his team work and how beautiful everything they make looks and how wonderful it tastes,” she says.
She and Matt met at a bakery in California, where they both worked. They later opened a bakery together, sold it, and then worked at Sea Island, The Broadmoor Sister property in Georgia. The couple

moved to Colorado Springs to work at The Broadmoor five years ago. Katie says working with her husband is enjoyable. It’s also helpful, she says, not only because they share a commute but also because Matt understands the industry and can help her see challenges from a different perspective. “We both have the same work ethic and put our all into our jobs,” she says.
But, like the Sartoris, the friendships and family memories made at The Broadmoor are what make it more than just a job.
Katie remembers a special visit with her parents at the resort. They stayed in a Broadmoor cottage, and the Hogans enjoyed showing her parents around the grounds, pointing out favorite details, offering insider tips, and making special memories. Katie’s father passed away shortly after the trip. It was one of their last memories together, and one that imprints The Broadmoor even deeper into her heart.
“It’s more than just employees working together,” she says. “We’re like a family.”

In 1916, Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose invited a select group of drivers to compete for the fastest time on a newly constructed road to the summit of Pikes Peak. With hopes that the event would boost tourism to Colorado Springs, Penrose welcomed more than 600 media outlets to the inaugural run.
Known today as The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, brought to you by Gran Turismo, the event is the country’s second-oldest motorsports competition, following the Indianapolis 500. The annual race draws competitors, fans and media from around the world to witness seventy competitors in six divisions complete for "King of the Mountain." The race covers 12 miles of road and includes 156 turns, culminating at an altitude of over 14,000 feet.

“The appeal of this motorsports tradition around the world continues to bring elite drivers and cutting-edge technology to Pikes Peak. No where else will fans witness grassroots efforts competing head-to-head with major manufacturer efforts,” says Lisa Haight, communications manager and race historian. “For race fans, there is nothing like it—watching the sun rise from high up on the mountain and then hearing the cars launch from the start line one by one—truly it’s a bucket-list event.” Haight has been attending race day since she was a child and cheering on her father, Nick Sanborn, a fivetime winner of the Stock Car division. The 101st running of the “Race to the Clouds” will take place on June 25, 2023. This year’s event is expected to draw more than 30,000 racing fans participating in the pre-race street party and events leading up to the big day. Technical Inspection kicks off Race Week on June 19. Qualifying and practice rounds are held June 20–23. When not on the mountain, fans may also tour the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Experience inside the Penrose Heritage Museum, located on The Broadmoor’s campus at 11 Lake Circle. “It takes upwards of a decade to make it to the Games, and then comes this moment walking into the stadium and getting that joyful, celebratory experience,” says Michelle Dusserre Farrell, a senior director at the USOPM and an Olympic silver medal winner as part of the 1984 U.S. gymnastics team. “This event is bigger than any one person, and we worked hard at crafting the exhibit experience to share that moment.
“This is what it feels like to be part of Team USA,” Farrell says. “It’s an incredibly unique experience the museum has created."

Penrose Heritage Museum celebrates the passions of Broadmoor founders Spencer and Julie Penrose.
SPENCER AND JULIE PENROSE, NOTED COLORADO SPRINGS entrepreneurs and philanthropists, built The Broadmoor in 1918. The resort is one of many regional attractions the couple created in the first half of the 20th century, including Pauline Chapel, The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, and Penrose Heritage Museum.
The Penroses were married in London in 1906 and spent the next 30 years traveling throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. They collected fine china, stylish clothes, furs, magnificent works of art, historical armaments, riding equipment, and other objects during their travels.
The Broadmoor, which opened on June 29, 1918, incorporated the Penroses’ favorite elements of their global travels. The Broadmoor’s Mediterranean-inspired architecture, ceiling frescoes painted by Italian artisans, bamboo furniture imported from Hong Kong, and Turkish baths all gave the property its unique flair.
Spencer Penrose promoted the resort and the region through
sports, adding a golf course, horseback riding trails, polo fields, shuffleboard, fishing, an indoor riding arena, and even a stadium for professional football games and the rodeo he started in 1937.
Julie Penrose created the Broadmoor Art Academy in 1919 to provide visitors with access to fine art, music, and theater. She also built Pauline Chapel, named after her granddaughter, and filled it with religious paintings and relics purchased in Europe. Mrs. Penrose expanded The Broadmoor’s amenities in 1941 when she created the El Pomar Carriage Museum, designed by Bauhaus architect Jan Ruhtenberg, to display the Penrose carriage collection.
Today, Penrose Heritage Museum, located next to Broadmoor Hall, exhibits personal artifacts, home film footage, and photographs alongside carriages and the official race car collection of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, started by Mr. Penrose in 1916. The museum is owned and operated by El Pomar Foundation, the grant making foundation the Penroses created in 1937. Celebrating its 85th anniversary in 2023, the foundation has surpassed $700 million in grants and community programs.

Originally constructed in 1930 as an enclosed horse-riding academy on The Broadmoor’s campus, the venue was converted by resort founder Spencer Penrose into The Broadmoor Ice Palace after he was inspired by figure skater Sonja Henie’s performance. One hundred tons of water were frozen to create the rink’s surface, and steam pipes were installed at its edges to warm spectators.
The Broadmoor World Arena, which has since relocated a few miles east of the resort’s main campus, today hosts a full calendar of events on an annual basis. The adjacent World Ice Hall is home to Olympic training, curling, speed skating, and youth hockey.
Additionally, Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Colorado Springs offers an all-star lineup of Broadway shows, Colorado Springs Philharmonic concerts, and other top touring acts.

Ride to and from the summit of America’s Mountain aboard a historic cog railway. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway departs from Manitou Depot and operates year-round, weather permitting. Arriving 30 minutes before your scheduled departure is recommended, as are advance reservations. The round trip is about three hours—one hour up, 40 minutes at. the summit, and one hour and 10 minutes back down to the depot.

Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose invited 60 esteemed hoteliers from around the country to an all-expenses-paid, two-week getaway at the resort. The group, whose collective net worth was estimated at roughly $100 million dollars, arrived on September 4, 1920. The VIP guests were treated to a host of activities, including nightly dinner dances, scenic drives up Pikes Peak, polo and golf matches, performances by

The following year, the club members held a banquet at New York’s Commodore Hotel to honor Mr. Penrose, presenting him with a plaque that declared him a “Bon Vivant of Rare Accomplishment” and “The Prince of Entertainers.”
The oversized murals in The Hotel Bar depict the group both at The Broadmoor and in New York at the party honoring Mr. Penrose. There are also some interesting details in another painting depicting their activities. At the bottom left, a monkey stands near an eyeball—a reference to Mr. Penrose’s glass eye. In the car directly above, you’ll notice a hat and flask. Those symbolize Mr. Penrose’s constant presence and his legendary hospitality, the spirit of which still thrives today.
