Catherine Johnson The Black History Month Quiz Bowl Competition featured the Booker T. Washington Scholars against the W.E.B. Dubois Scholars. After two halves of intense battle the W.E.B. Scholars prevailed in a thrilling 24 – 19 victory. This month-long celebration afforded students and staff the opportunity to learn about the contributions and achievements of African-Americans. “It was a great opportunity for us to showcase our talents,” says student participant Ty’Marcus Newton.
I am currently in the Gateway Program. I don’t have just one thing that makes school special for me. School is more like my second home. The way everyone is there for each other is lovely. I am a big family person. I like having teachers that will be there for you when you need them. Everybody has each other’s backs if they feel like it’s the right thing to do. I honestly don’t have a favorite subject. The Center of Opportunity is the first school that I like. My role model is my best friend and partner in life. I look up to him because he shows me that there is nothing I can’t do in life. He always pushes me to do my best, and he helps me the most.

10th grade
My school is special because the teachers take their time with us and we are not rushed to learn. The environment of the school is quiet and peaceful. It is nothing like the noisy environment at my home school. My favorite subject is English. I can relate to my English teacher George Brown. I relate to him because of his love for reading. I would like to go to England to further my education. I desire to become a Police Officer. I am headstrong and I am focused on reaching my goals.
