FROM THE EDITOR...
Dear travellers,
Who can believe we are halfway through 2023 already? While some are counting down the days to Summer, some of us are already counting the days down to Christmas…
But before we arrive at either, we have a packed edition to share with you. Our team have been busy on a staycation in Birgu, one of the Three Cities, chatting with bag designer, Gabriella Lukacs about her lastest collection designed to incorporate the intricate tradition of lace making, and reminisced on motherhood with a beautiful book on the subject.
We share some ideas on workshops and things to do if you’re travelling solo – these will help you to try your hand at something different, meet other like-minded people - and who knows, you might discover a new skill and meet your next travel buddy! There are so many events of every genre from flamenco to exhibitions to dance parties and live music – so take this edition of Il-Bizzilla off the plane with you, so you don’t miss a beat!
EuroPride is being staged in Malta this September and we meet Robert La Bua who shares some info on the event. We alsomeet Shaun Farrugia, a Maltese musician making waves on the international stage, who is also performing here on June 29th –which is one of the two public holidays this month. The other is the 7th June, so expect even more activity the night before! Shops and restaurants stay open, it’s just banks and most offices that close for those dates.
Take a peek at the installation planned by the artists chosen to represent Malta for the London Design Biennale – it might make you look at our lovely villages with a different eye.
We have many suggestions of where to eat too; there’s a wide choice to suit every palate and pocket.
Have a wonderful trip, and make everyday count.

STAYCATION VACATION
I GOT A FEW PUZZLED LOOKS WHEN I TOLD MY GIRLFRIENDS WHERE I WAS OFF TO FOR AN UPCOMING WEEKEND BREAK. “YES, BIRGU”, I’D REPEAT. “A STAYCATION. THEY’RE ALL THE RAGE THESE DAYS.”
We weren’t disappointed, and the fair city of Birgu, also known as Vittoriosa, sitting pretty across from Valletta in Malta’s Grand Harbour, turned out to be more charismatic than expected. Culturally fruitful, Birgu exudes Maltese charm, with its stone bastions and plant-pot paved alleyways, Regatta clubs and smiling locals. The street decorations and church bells set the scene for what was to be the perfect Springtime escape, away from the fastpaced buzz of the city.
The seaside locality surrounded by clear azure waters, proved the ideal place to slow down and embrace Malta’s past. Everywhere you looked was a reminder of the stories the fortified city has told. It evoked the imagination, tales of quests and journeys, battles and victories. Well known for its rich historical importance, Birgu, in The Southern Harbour region of the main island, is one of Malta’s “Three Cities”, along with Senglea and Bormla. Though petite, Birgu provided more than its fair share of sightseeing opportunities over a two-night stay. The many twists and turns of the old city
streets were dotted with grand buildings that once hosted knights and hospitallers. Due to its strategic location, Birgu served as the base of the Order of Saint John and de facto capital city of Malta from 1530 to 1571. It was Birgu that held the fort during The Great Siege of Malta, the climax of the escalating conquest against the Ottoman Empire’s fight for control of The Mediterranean in 1565. The Knights of Malta withstood the siege and repelled the invaders, and the victory became one of the most celebrated triumphs of sixteenth-century Europe.
Birgu’s selection of museums is concentrated, making it a desirable destination stay for history lovers looking to delve into Malta’s thrilling past. Fort St Angelo, with its magnificent views of The Grand Harbour, is just a stone’s throw away from The Malta Maritime Museum, which explores the island’s naval background up to the Second World War. The Inquisitor’s Palace, now upheld by Heritage Malta, is one of the few surviving places of interest of its kind, and is open to the public as a museum.

OLD CHARM, MODERN TWIST
Behind the seemingly impenetrable thick walls, flanking Malta’s Grand Harbour, lies a hidden gem known as the Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea), which is surprisingly off the tourists' radar. Predominantly a maritime hub, rich in history, this area is reviving itself and the Rolling Geeks are paving the way with their modern take on touring. Explore this gorgeous open-air museum full of architectural riches and breathtaking views, while cruising around in your eco friendly, smart technology vehicle.
The cars are fun, safe and easy to drive. Following a GPS-guided route at an easy pace while listening to the commentary on board in the language of your choice gives you the freedom to sightsee at your own pace. The online tracking and on-board communication system enables the Rolling Geeks’ vigilant staff to provide assistance throughout t he tour, giving you peace of mind. The roads on the prescribed route are very quiet and it is very easy to park and step out whenever you wish to.
The selfie feature in the cars adds to the fun, the rest is up to you to capture. Overall, this is a great value-for -money experience, suitable for all ages.

DESTINATION 9
Birgu’s core is postcard pretty - walking through the quaint medieval alleyways of traditional houses and grand palazzos is magically Mediterranean.
Birgu’s core is postcard pretty - walking through the quaint medieval alleyways of traditional houses and grand palazzos is magically Mediterranean. A short stroll out of the fortifications to the nearest town along the seafront took us to Bormla, where we sat down for a drink, and first taste of warm Three Cities hospitality. For dinner, we headed back to Birgu’s picturesque square to a lively restaurant. The row of candlelit tables sneaking up the rustic alleyway proved worthy of many a photo break for fellow visitors. We went for a bountiful smoked salmon salad and a Capriciosa to share. It was then that we realised that Birgu portions were off the scale, and, more importantly, delicious. Imqaret with ice cream - a Maltese delicacy - hit the spot for dessert.
After a fresh morning walk to Senglea, across the water from Bormla over a pedestrian bridge, our Three Cities staycation led us back to Birgu square, just in time for an English Breakfast and fresh Maltese orange juice, in true holiday style. There’s something about “touristing in your own country” that extracts romanticism from simplicity, and the other patrons on the surrounding tables looked
just as content. On overhearing the excitement of an American couple abroad purchasing pastizzi for the first time from the pastizzar in the square, my thoughts on Birgu being a worthy worldtravel destination were confirmed.
Birgu Waterfront was also polka-dotted with sunshine-soaking holidaymakers enjoying th eir cappucinos. We had to join them for a tab le, it was Golden Hour after all. Apart from the stellar selection of restaurants and cafes on the waterfront, the row of super-yachts were also quite the attrac tion. For lovers of boats and/or celebrities, Birgu’s top class Marina is the ultimate place to take down notes. With their cream leather sofas on deck and sparkling sliding doors, they made a kitsch comparison to the nearby traditional wooden boats that take excited tourists to Valletta and back for less than five euros.
Boasting Baroque churches with jewel-box interiors set in a maze of colourful doors and pavestones smoothed with time, Birgu’s historical artefacts and architecture (and truffle Calzones the size of your head) certainly won us over.

WITH SO MANY CITIES, TOWNS AND VILLAGES ON OUR LITTLE ISLANDS, IT’S HARD TO DECIDE WHAT TO SEE AND WHERE TO GO. WE HIGHLIGHT A DIFFERENT LOCAL LOCATION EVERY MONTH, AND THIS MONTH, IT'S VITTORIOSA A.K.A BIRGU.
THE MALTA INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL – WHERE MALTA BECOMES A BACKDROP FOR ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE
JUST IN TIME FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS, THE MIAF WILL FEATURE A WEEK-LONG CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS BETWEEN THE 16TH AND 25TH OF JUNE ACROSS VARIOUS HISTORICAL VENUES ON THE MALTESE ISLANDS.
Arts festivals are renowned worldwide for their multi-faceted events that feature diverse cultures and artistic disciplines. The Malta International Arts Festival is no different, featuring the crème de la crème of international artists and ensembles over the years. But what makes this festival truly unique is that it embraces historical venues around Malta with site-specific performances. The festival's audiences have had the unique opportunity of attending concerts in exclusive locations around the island, including the breath-taking Grand Harbour and Ħaġar Qim Temples, as well as intimate indoor venues within the capital city of Valletta.
This year, the festival boasts a stellar line-up of local and international artists across various disciplines, including music, visual arts, theatre, dance, community projects, and fashion, to name a few.
One of the highlights is the hurdy-gurdy virtuoso Guilhem Desq, who will be visiting the island for the first time to demonstrate his mastery of an old-world instrument commonly used during the mediaeval era. Desq breathes new life to the hurdy-gurdy, performing a variety of genres, including European folk, heavy metal, pop, and contemporary rock. To top it off, Desq will perform in Malta's national theatre, Teatru Manoel. Also at the Manoel is a recital by the country's national orchestra, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, who will present, amongst other works, two major classical highlights: Piano Concerto No. 2 by Shostakovich, featuring Greek pianist Konstantinos Destounis, and Beethoven’s 6th Symphony The Pastorale
For those searching for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the 'Underground Valletta: In Concert' is must-see. Set beneath the Capital City, these concerts will give audiences a glimpse of the vast underground network of shelters and cisterns beneath this bustling city. This surreal venue will serve as a backdrop for two performances: ‘Glass Harmonica - Thomas Bloch’ and ‘PercussionLuís Bittencourt’. The intimate ambience and unique acoustics are the perfect ingredients for two unique experiences that are not to be missed.
Another event that has become a staple during the MIAF is the ‘Harbour Odyssey’, a musical-theatre performance on The Fernandes. The two-masted vessel will sail within the majestic Grand Harbour, which is considered one of the most beautiful ports of the Mediterranean. The audience will have the unique opportunity to experience a gorgeous sunset and admire the breath-taking views while enjoying a theatrical narrative inspired by the local legends and historical anecdotes. What more can you ask for?
If you're in Malta in June and want to visit unique venues, then the MIAF is your go-to festival. Not only does the festival introduce you to exquisite venues, but it also boasts a programme of events which champions artistic excellence.

do is packing a picnic and taking an "Inglesina" traditional wooden rowing boat out for a few hours.
These are commonly found on the Italian lakes, the name comes from the word “English", as these boats were originally built by English craftsmen who brought their boat-building skills to Italy in the early 19th century.
The Inglesina is a graceful and elegant boat, with a sleek hull that g lides smoothly through the water. It is typically made of wood, with a narrow beam and long oars that require skilled rowing to manoeuvre. The boats are often brightly painted and decorated with ornate designs, making them a beautiful sight on the lakes. Originally used for transportation and fishing on the lakes, today they are often used for recreational rowing and racing. There are many rowing clubs and associations around the lakes that organise races and events featuring the “Inglesina”, including the famous Palio delle Bisse race held each year on Lake Como.
If you decide to head home once again, now perhaps take a different transport option to the airport? The Lakes will steal a piece of your heart, so you may have to return soon to c ollect it!

ROME’S ANCIENT PHILOSOPHER IS OFTEN QUOTED SAYING, ’TRAVEL AND CHANGE OF PLACE IMPART NEW VIGOUR TO THE MIND’. Escaping to the island with wellness in mind can take many shapes. Several hotels and Gozo wellness retreats offer complete relaxation packages combining accommodation, wellness facilities, and services. Often involving spa facilities, these wellness facilities are notorious for

Likewise, mindfulness, meditation and yoga have found an essential niche in Gozo. It is as if the island exudes a unique energy that resonates with such activities. Places like the scenic Ta’ Ċenċ plateau, Dwejra and Ras il-Wardija are key spots popular for meditation in Gozo and yoga.
Beyond the typical wellness facilities, unwinding can be simply a matter of getting away from the madding crowd. Your Gozo retreat can be about wallowing in the peace of the countryside in some rural farmhouse or villa.
Shake off the pressures of daily life and the g loom of whatever is pulling you down. Instead, indulge in finding yourself again through meaningful activities. Sometimes this can mean finding time for yourself and enjoying a good night’s sleep or relishing a good story and a glass of wine in the afternoon. Read a book by your favourite author, journal your travels, write a poem, visit the beach at sunrise, capture the view of the majestic sunset, hike along the coast and consider swimming at some of Gozo’s hidden beaches. For more novel ideas, join an outdoor painti ng class, check out cooking sessions, try a spell at a pottery centre or visit one of Gozo’s eco farms. Finally, don’t forget that Gozo boasts a rich musical calendar of events to delight the ears.
All in all, wellness in Gozo is about reigniting and delighting the senses. If life has taken its toll on you, this can be a wake-up call. In Gozo, you can nourish your soul, feel good and chill out on the island synonymous with joie de vivre

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES
Gozo is home to some of the best beaches in the Maltese archipelago and its small size means that beaches are only a few minutes away from wherever you are on the island. These include Ħ ondoq ir-Rummien and Ramla Bay, and hidden gems such as Wied il-Għasri, San Blas and Għar Qawqla.
UNIQUE ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation on Gozo is as unique as the island itself. There's a fantastic choice of places to stay from five-star hotels and spas to restored traditional farmhouses with tonnes of character and glorious views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Gozo also offers a wide selection of good quality bed and breakfast accommodation, as well as hotels; many of which have excellent restaurants attached, catering for families, couples and single travellers.

DINING EXPERIENCES

ADVENTURES
Ho w about trying something new this summer? Often described as a diver’s paradise, Gozo has a remarkable range of shore and boat dives suitable for all levels of experience. Some incredible diving spots include the Santa Maria Caves, the Blue Hole and Mġarr ix-Xini.
Along with diving, there are many stu nning panoramic sites in Gozo, which can be enjoyed on foot or by bike, including Ta' Ċ en ċ Cliffs, Dwejra and the Inland Sea, M ġ arr ix-Xini, Wied il-Miela ħ , Sanap Cliffs, Mixta Cave to Ramla, Qala to Comino and Malta, and Ta’ G ħ ammar. ENJOY A SUNSET
It is perhaps one of the greatest treats of living on a small island, that you can enjoy some glorious sunrises and even more impressive sunsets.
Our favourite sunset spots are on the western side of the island. Sunsets can be witnessed along the coastal areas on the western side of Gozo like Xlendi, Dwejra and Xwejni.
B ut equally suggestive are the sunsets from the higher points of the island like the southern side cliffs, and the hilltops like Xagħra, Nadur, Żebbuġ and the Citadel, where you can witness the rolling landscape of hills and valleys, hit by the last light of the day in an amazing play of light.
The refreshing summer sea, the relaxed way of l ife, the sleepy village squares coming to life in the evenings as the scorching sun sets.
Gozo offers the change of setting you desire this summer.

ISLAND HIGHLIGHTS
MEDITERRANEAN THYME
Mediterranean Thyme (Sagħtar), is a low-growing and aromatic edible shrub that thrives in the local conditions. It produces flowers in shades of purple, pink and white, but with a different type of soil in the south, it’s rare to see there. The plant is famous for its culinary and medicinal properties and is a favorite food source for pollinators. If you land in Malta on a warm evening, you will probably pick up its scent.
WILD LOCAL ASPARAGUS
Local asparagus, known as Spraġġ Xewwieki, are a native wild plant found in the rocky regions of the Maltese islands and along the Mediterranean Sea. These tender shoots have a slightly bitter taste and are popularly used during their peak season as a key ingredient in local gourmet dishes, as well as household meals, such as quiches, pies, and speciality side dishes.

DIVING
Diving in Malta is another way to immerse yourself in history. Many wrecks are submerged below the water, some placed strategically, remnants from the past, giving divers a whole new side to see of Malta and Gozo. Many registered schools offer trial lessons and rent equipment.
SALUTING BATTERY
The Saluting Battery is a wonderful vantage point to view The Three Cities and The Grand Harbour. These canons are cared for by WirtArtna who curate other properties and places of interest. The canons are fired daily.

LAZARUS TILES
Lazarus Tiles is a project that seeks to preserve and document Maltese cement tiles which would otherwise be destined for the landfill. Started by Thomas Camilleri, these colourful and sometimes centuryold tiles are sourced from building sites, renovation projects and even skips, before being restored and mounted in steel. That way, after a lifetime of bearing our weight, they can now enjoy their retirement looking at us instead. As always, it’s the stories behind these objects that intrigue Thomas so much and he documents his discoveries online on Instagram (@thelazarusclub) and on Facebook (Lazarus Tiles).

FLOWER-POWERED MUSICAL TO TAKE TEATRU MANOEL AUDIENCES ON NOSTALGIA TRIP
THIS SUMMER AT TEATRU MANOEL, NEW BILINGUAL JUKEBOX MUSICAL ELLIE, IL-MUSICAL WILL FLY AUDIENCES BACK TO THE TIME OF FLOWER POWER – WITH THE HELP OF HIT SONGS FROM THE 1960 s AND 70 s. .
Ready to return to the swinging 60s? The 1960s and 70s brought with them much change, from hippies and flower power to a social revolution complete with groovy fashion – and an entire catalogue of music that remains just as popular today as it was back then.
With this iconic era as a backdrop and featuring classic songs of the day, Ellie, il-Musical is a brand-new jukebox musical performed in both Maltese and English, which tells the heart-warming story of four singers in Malta in the late 1960s.
The four friends compete against each other in an annual music event at the Yellow Music Club to find the best rendition of covers of songs from The Beatles' catalogue. The Club’s owners suggest they form a group of their own – yet two of the friends, Kate and Ellie,
might not stay in Malta much longer, if their auditions to continue their musical studies abroad are successful. The Club’s co-owner contacts an old flame in Liverpool to ask for her help with the project, much to his wife’s annoyance, while Ellie’s parents can’t seem to agree on anything. Can everyone finally accept that all they need is love?
“Ellie, il-Musical is the kind of show that inspires joy in the audience,” says Simon Bartolo, who penned the original musical in 2019 based on an idea by producer Antoine Farrugia. “I love it when people can sing along with the songs. Even though it’s a new show, it still feels familiar and nostalgic. This is a feel-good musical that audiences of all ages will enjoy, having fun with lively characters and a wonderful array of much-loved classic songs.
30 LOCAL WORDS FINESSE GROUP
These are the type of songs that never die –and deservedly so. They have stood the test of time for a reason, and, for this musical, some of today’s great Maltese singers will interpret them.”
Directed by Josette Ciappara, choreographed by Warren Bonello and with musical direction by Elton Zarb, the show’s stellar cast features Alex Portelli as Ellie, alongside other top local musical performers including Jeremy Grech, Clare Agius, Patrick Vella, Mariah Mangion and Eliza Aquilina, leading an extraordinary ensemble.
“Ellie, il-Musical will be a joyful experience that audiences will carry with them for some time,” agrees Josette Ciappara. “It is light-hearted and full of funny and relatable moments, with well-rounded characters and a great story. Besides, I love the era! The 60s left a great mark on the musical and cultural scene, both in Malta and abroad. These were exciting times to live, and it is a pleasure to allow the audience to have a taste of what is now history.”
For the premiere of Ellie, il-Musical on Friday 30 June, the audience can even help set
the scene inside Malta’s national theatre by wearing groovy outfits inspired by the 1960s and 70s – and witness the beginnings of an unmissable, flower-powered, distinctly Maltese musical experience.
Performances of Ellie, il-Musical will take place at Teatru Manoel at 8pm on Friday 30 June and on 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 July 2023. This production is suitable for audiences aged six and above. Tickets and more information are available via www.teatrumanoel.mt or by email to bookings@teatrumanoel.mt and telephone on (+356) 2124 6389.

MALTA WELCOMES EUROPRIDE 2023
For the first time ever, the annual EuroPride festival is taking place in Malta. This much vaunted multiday gala of diversity is usually assigned to large cities on the continent, so it is quite a feather in Malta's boa that Valletta was chosen as host for 2023's bonanza, with a whole host of celebratory events that will bring an influx of jovial visitors to the islands this September. Rather surprising to people from other countries unfamiliar with the openmindedness of Maltese society, is the fact that Malta is a world leader in LGBTQIA+ rights. The International Lesbian And Gay Association ranks 49 European countries on its quality of life for LGBTQIA+ people, Malta's position on the list? Number 1.
While parties and other merriment are the climax of any EuroPride, there is actually a wide range of engaging activities on the calendar encompassing a variety of topics related to
the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond. The grand opening will take place on the 7th of September, initiating ten days of art exhibitions, concerts, conferences, and lectures to complement the parties, dance performances, film nights, and drag shows filling the evening hours. Among the highlights is the EuroPride march and concert on the 16th of September, preceding the end of the festival the following day, when a harbour cruise will showcase Valletta's beauty from the water. Although special events are taking place not only in the lovely ‘triq ’ (Maltese for streets) of Valletta; the Gozo Pride march and concert are being held on the 9th of September, enticing visitors to experience the dramatic scenery and local charms of the sister island, while immersed in an extra-special ambience of conviviality.

THE MALTA PAVILION TAKES OVER THE CENTRAL COURTYARD AT SOMERSET HOUSE FOR THE LONDON DESIGN BIENNALE 2023
MALTESE ARTISTS HAD QUITE A PRESENCE SHOWING OFF THEIR TALENTS IN RECENT YEARS, EXPERIENCING SIGNIFICANT SUCCESS AT MAJOR INTERNATIONAL ART FESTIVALS SUCH AS THE VENICE ART BIENNALE, WITH PAVILIONS COMMISSIONED BY ARTS COUNCIL MALTA RECEIVING HIGHLY POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM THE INTERNATIONAL PRESS.
Arts Council Malta aims to build on these accomplishments by focusing on international visibility, collaborations and exchanges. For the first time ever the Arts Council Malta is presenting work at the London Design Biennale 2023 wh ich opens its doors on 1st June till the 25th.
I had the opportunity to discuss the Malta Pavilion with ‘Open Square Collective’, the creative team behind the ‘Urban Fabric’ installation, commissioned by Arts Council Malta. The large-scale walkthrough installation is set to take over the central courtyard at Somerset House in London. Visitors may be able to experience the various layers by negotiating their way around a hypothetical village that evokes the Maltese urban fabric. The creative team constituting ‘Open Square Collective’ is made up of individuals well known to the Maltese art scene. These are architect and
designer Matthew Joseph Casha, artist and academic Trevor Borg, who has also presented his work at the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale, fashion designer Luke Azzopardi as well as junior architect and designer Alessia Deguara. The creative team is also joined by veteran journalist Ramona Depares on communications and Gilbert Micallef as financial advisor.
The Malta Pavilion has attracted wide coverage in the international media. Dr Romina Delia, Internationalisation Executive at Arts Council Malta, and project leader of Malta’s participation at the London Design Biennale 2023, stated that “given our geographical context, Arts Council Malta recognise s that forming and maintaining international connections is fundamental for Malta's cultural and creative sectors to flourish. Arts Council Malta’s aim is to support artists to reach out to new and diverse audiences

around the globe and sustaining the growth of cultural and creative entrepreneurs.”
The installation ‘Urban Fabric’ is a response to the biennale theme of ‘The Global Game: Remapping Collaborations’, conceived through a fusion of art, architecture and innovative design, focusing on sustainability and environmental awareness. It celebrates Malta by merging the traditional city planning of ancient Maltese villages with the Phoenician tradition of fabric production and dyeing. ‘Urban Fabric’s’ sustainable and certified eco-friendly components of wood, stone and organic fabric contextualized through historical research carried out at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, create a street -like layout enabling the viewers to interact with the installation. The artistic installation also encourages discourse about the environment by presenting a well-researched project made up of a combination of aesthetic and spatial awareness with activism.
“We are honoured and excited to be representing Malta for the first time at this prestigious event. The concept that informs this installation is something we all feel strongly about, that of providing an ‘urban’ space that changes and evolves with the regionality of its surroundings, thus allowing its quality and essence to come through
more easily than it does through the concrete structures currently growing within the Maltese landscape” was what the collective had to say of their installation. “Using natural materials as the main material components, we strive to instill the idea that humans should use these materials to their best potential within their set timespan, rather than trying to extend their duration through unnatural means. Through Urban Fabric, we aim to evoke a sense of memory and space, allowing for a more integrated thinking approach to material and urban fabric.”
The Malta Pavilion is commissioned by Arts Council Malta, under the auspices of Malta’s Ministry for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government and sponsors include the Malta Tourism Authority, Airmalta, Malta Enterprise, Valletta Design Cluster, Heritage Malta, Camilleri Paris Mode, CTP Consulting Engineers, Hydroelectric and Collingwood.

The Malta Pavilion can be viewed inside the courtyard of Somerset House from the 1st to 25th June and online on urbanfabricmalta.com. Many of the materials used in ‘Urban Fabric’ will also be repurposed for a new installation in early 2024.

WHATEVER YOUR REASON FOR VISITING THE MALTESE ISLANDS, WE HAVE A WEALTH OF PRODUCTS AND/OR SERVICES FOR YOU.
NEW RHYTHMS FOR AN AGE-OLD TRADITION
IN THE PAST, IF YOU FOUND YOURSELF WALKING AROUND MALTA'S VILLAGE CORES, YOU WOULD OFTEN END UP LISTENING TO THE STRUMMING OF GUITARS AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF THE ISLANDS' CHARACTERISTIC LIMESTONE BUILDINGS.
You were bound to find people gathering, typically men, seated on wooden chairs singing melodies that are alien to the ears of most European mainlanders. Għana (pronounced a-na), Malta’s very own folk song tradition, is an essential part of Malta’s sonic identity and has been for centuries.
Despite its decreasing popularity, Għana remains alive and well each year through a festival celebrating Għana’s contribution to the canon of world music. Ritmu Roots Festival Malta will look at Malta's traditional music through an alternative lens. This year Ritmu will be taking place between the 2nd and 10th June and will offer a range of activities for locals, expats and tourists alike.
The main events for the festival will be happening at the scenic Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana on the 9th and 10th June. Throughout these two days, visitors are invited to join us for a lively lineup of events at these historic gardens which will feature local artists, performances by musicians from around the world including legendary gypsy-jazz musician Tchavolo Schmitt, stalls where visitors can explore Malta’s colourful musical history and more.
Beyond the two days at Argotti Botanic Gardens, the festival will be kicking off on the 2nd June by inviting audiences to a traditional għana session hosted in Żejtun at the garage of Mikiel Cumbo “L-Iżgej ”. “L-Iżgej ” is an għannej particularly known for singing għana fil-għoli, a now rare form of high pitched għana
Following this opener on the 2nd June, the festival will then continue to unfold at The Splendid in Valletta with “Bil-Mixi Ġejt: The Life & Times of Bambinu”, an exhibition dedicated to legendary għannej Mikiel Abela “Il-Bambinu” curated by multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Charlie Cauchi. This will be complemented by performances by local fusion band Gitgħana, a screening of an ethnographic documentary in Maltese by Adrian Camilleri and music workshops. Alexandra Aquilina is presenting a vibrant and provocative celebration of pop culture and everyday objects which have been infused with a healthy dose of irony and satire in her first solo exhibition at MUŻA, Valletta. Characterised by bold imagery and vibrant colors, her work is created using techniques such as large format screen printing and sculpture. She draws inspiration from history, folklore, and international mass media to deliver a sensory feast that challenges our perceptions of art and the world around us.
Curated by Lisa Gwen, the exhibition tackles themes of life, spirituality, and mortality through the lens of a Catholic upbringing, resulting in a collection of raw and highly intimate works. With a graphic design approach and frequent use of provocative imagery, Aquilina's work invites the viewer to engage with the artworks on a visceral level.

WORDS VILLA BOLOGNA
NEW BEGINNINGS FOR A HISTORIC MALTESE BRAND
VILLA BOLOGNA IS A HERITAGE BRAND THAT IS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE MALTESE ISLANDS. ESTABLISHED IN 1924 BY THE STRICKLAND FAMILY, IN 2020 SOPHIE AND ROWLEY EDWARDS, A YOUNG COUPLE WITH A LONG HISTORY IN MALTA, TOOK OWNERSHIP OF THE POTTERY.
Together they have established a new international audience for their unique collections of table, gift and homeware. This summer the couple open a new restaurant, Villa Bologna Restaurant, next to the pottery shop and workshop, in the village of Attard.
SOPHIE & ROWLEY, TELL US HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED WITH VILLA BOLOGNA POTTERY? WHY IS IT SO SPECIAL TO YOU BOTH?
If you know Malta, you know Villa Bologna Pottery. Most people in Malta have a piece of our pottery in their home. The pottery was established in 1924 but over the past few years had slightly lost its way. We took over the pottery just as lockdown began - which actually allowed us some time to go through all the archives and curate a collection of table, home and giftware that we felt reflected the very best of the design history of Villa Bologna Pottery. Unlike many pottery companies, we still make all our pieces by hand and everything is hand-painted by our team of artists, meaning every item is unique.
HAVE YOU KEPT ALL THE EXISTING DESIGNS OR ARE THERE NEW COLLECTIONS FOR US TO LOOK OUT FOR?
Our Admiral Vases, Glug Glug Jugs, Pineapple and Dolphin Lamps are some of the signature pieces taken from our archives. They are pieces that are instantly recognisable as Villa Bologna Pottery and really show off our design aesthetic. We have also extended and updated designs for our tableware ranges with new patterns such as Stripes, a new Palm Tree design and our most recent launch, the Scalloped collection. We have also added chintz tablecloths and napkins, tablemats and candles and will launch new glassware this summer.
THE SHOP AND WORKSHOP, LOCATED IN THE GROUNDS OF THE VILLA BOLOGNA, ARE VERY SPECIAL. PLEASE TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS UNIQUE DESTINATI ON?
Villa Bologna is a stunning 18th century villa. Our workshop, pottery and shop are all found in the old stable block. The quiet and picturesque nature of the village of Attard, where we are located, gives the shop and workshop a very calm and serene atmosphere.
People coming to the shop and the new restaurant can see the workshop and all our craftspeople at work and we really encourage people to visit it and to see the many stages that go into the production of a single piece of pottery.
YOU HAVE DECIDED TO OPEN A RESTAURANT NEXT DOOR TO THE SHOP AND POTTERY - WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND THIS AND CAN YOU LET US KNOW WHAT WE CAN EXPECT?
We were offered the lease to the restaurant recently and felt it was a wonderful way for us to show off our products in the perfect setting, a family restaurant. Both of us are foodies and we love Italian food so the restaurant will offer Italian dishes for lunch and dinner, as well as coffee and pastries in the morning and a cocktail menu in the evening. There is a cool indoor space and a charming courtyard garden, where you can sit under the scented shade of the citrus trees. Our produce will be locally sourced wherever possible and Maltese and Italian wines will be served.
IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE LOTS OF PLANS FOR THE POTTERY BOTH HERE IN MALTA AND FURTHER AFIELD. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING FOR VILLA BOLOGNA POTTERY AROUND THE WORLD?
We have recently opened a shop in London, in Holland Park. It's been great to offer our products to UK customers who have loved our unique Maltese style. They all say it’s like having an instant dash of sunshine in their homes. We are thrilled to be featured in magazines all over the world, all talking about Malta as a great design and cultural hotspot in Europe. We have also launched a new website and we now ship to the US and Canada and all over Europe. We love Malta and we are thrilled to be taking one of our best kept secrets to the rest of the world.

MALTA IS HOME TO GABRIELLA LUKACS, FOUNDER OF GABE, A LOCAL FASHION BRAND THAT HAS BEEN MAKING WAVES WITH ITS UNIQUE AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGNS. THE RECENTLY LAUNCHED MERKABA COLLECTION IS QUICKLY GAINING POPULARITY BOTH LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY.
ARTISAN 52
WORDS MONIQUE CHAMBERS
Born from the Malta Crafts Foundation’s annual awards that recognise e xcellence in craftsmanship and innovative product ideas, where it won the category that aims to revive traditional crafts through collaboration and innovation, Merkaba went through various guises to get to the recently launched finished product.
Lace-making is a traditional craft in Malta that has been practiced fo r centuries, and has faced its own challenges in recent years. This collaboration is hoped to inspire people to see the craft re-imagined; Maltese lace has elements unique to it and it is hoped that the skills and craftsmanship nee ded will continue to be passed down to younger generations.
Different sustainable and recycled materials were trialled for this collection, but the issue with the size of bobbins meant that a change of yarn and a mix of techniques including macramé and crochet, had to be employe d. The collection is inspired by the sacred g eometry of the Merkaba, which is believed to be a powerful symbol of spiritual transformation and protection. In line with this, the collection features a range of bags that are designed to be both functional and fashionable, with each bag carefully crafted to meet the needs of the modern traveller.
One of the standout pieces in the collection is the Tote Bag, which is made from a combination of eco-friendly materials, including recycled yarns and organic cotton. The bag features a bold geometric design that is sure to turn heads, while its spacious interior and sturdy straps make it the perfect companion for a day out exploring.
Fo r those looking for something a little more compact for evenings for example, the Merkaba Crossbody Bag is a great option. It is made from the same eco-friendly materials as the Tote Bag, but it s compact size makes it ideal for carrying your essentials while on the go. The bag also features an adjustable strap, allowing you to wear it comfortably whichever way you prefer.
Gabriella is committed to sustainability and ethical practices, with her materials, eco-friendly packaging and biodegradable shipping mailers, reducing her product’s impact on the environment as much as possible. It is hoped that this aspect appeals to the younger audience and introduces them to the craft of lace and bag making too.

CURATED BY ROBERTA AZZOPARDI, SONGS OF MOTHERHOOD/GĦANJIET L-OMM IS PRACTICALLY A LOVE STORY AND COMFORT BLANKET, FOR MOTHERS—BY MOTHERS. IT IS A CELEBRATION OF SOME OF THE HAPPIEST MOMENTS IN A MOTHER’S LIFE AND THE NOT-SO-HAPPY ONES THAT STILL DESERVE TO BE SUNG.
The book’s journey started with a poem that Roberta had written and published on her Instagram. “It was something of a eureka moment,” she says when I ask her what prompted her to curate this anthology. “I felt a connection with many other mothers who also write, paint or draw to express their joy and struggles with motherhood. It was such a natural transition between this awareness and the "wait - what if we collect all this in a book?" moment, that I almost berated myself at not having thought of it earlier. It's been done before but never quite like this—so many mediums, in two different languages, co-existing harmoniously together,” Roberta continues.
Whilst Songs of Motherhood is certainly one of Roberta’s proudest achievements so far, she initially saw it as a huge responsibility. “I would be sitting somewhere and reading through their submissions and thinking, “Wow, they trusted me to do something good with this,” Roberta says. “Now, seeing the book, hearing the contributors thank me for the opportunity…feels surreal. I am happy we gave them this space, but also incredibly humbled by their stories.”
Joining Roberta in this ode to motherhood is Moira Scicluna Zahra—the illustrator, and Sarah Cachia Falzon—the book designer. Moira depicts illustrations of Mediterranean flora and four female figures representing the different kinds of mothers
we encounter in the book, while Sarah’s exquisite colour palette, typography, and cover design capture the heartwarming moments of joy and wonder with the more heartbreaking ones of loss and grief.
Undoubtedly, Roberta’s role as a mother to her son Benji is also a song that deserves to be sung. “I remember reading through a particularly powerful piece and wishing I had Benji close by to hold him as tightly as I could,” Roberta says. “These stories serve so many purposes—they serve to make us notice the ordinary everyday things that we take for granted. They serve to raise awareness about loss and infertility and at how widespread— but usually suppressed—they really are. In a way, these stories serve to accompany every mother on their journey, whatever her story, in the hope that they realise they're never alone with their struggles,” she continues. “In my case, the connection with so many mothers bolstered my own confidence in mothering. My struggles are echoed on many pages of the book, and it is a warm reassurance to be in such good company.”

TBWA\ANG TURNS 55 YEARS YOUNG AND THIS IS HOW THEY DO IT
TURNING 55 IS NO SMALL FEAT IN AN INDUSTRY THAT HAS CHANGED EXPONENTIALLY OVER THE PAST FIVE DECADES.
TURNING 55 IS NO SMALL FEAT IN AN INDUSTRY THAT HAS CHANGED THIS EXPONENTIALLY OVER THE PAST DECADES. A CYCLOTHYMIC INDUSTRY BUILT ON THE BACK OF TRENDS AND POPULAR CULTURE WITH THE DECISIVENESS OF A PETULANT TEENAGER. HOW HAS TBWA\ANG SUCCEEDED IN KEEPING ITSELF AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE COMMUNICATIONS INDUS TRY?
“The life of a company very much mirrors a personal journey, except of course that, in Business, surrounding yourself with creatives half your age reflects perpetual company culture evolution - and not the droll of finding yourself in the throes of a mid-life existential crises. No Sir! We’re 55 - young enough to run with wild horses and old enough to know better than to try. It’s a privileged position to know who you are. Wise enough to be in the moment, make mistakes, savor the wins and know, for a fact, that every fall will be followed by a stronger stand. It takes time to get there, to manage the fine lines between arrogance and confidence. Time, sweat, tears and generations of perseverance. A healthy sense of humour and the ability to take ourselves with a pinch of salt has been vital. This business is tough, it gets under your skin and works its way into your every waking hour. A thick skin, much patience and some grace, go a long way.”
THE FOUNDER OF ASSOCIATED NEWS GROUP, LATER KNOWN AS ANG AND SINCE 2006 TBWA\ANG, JOURNALIST GODFREY GRIMA, PASSED AWAY IN 2022, HOW HAS THIS AFFECTED THE BUSINESS?
“We started somewhere, 55 years ago with nothing to our name but the ambition and smarts of one man, our founding father, Godfrey Grima, with his daughter Julianne, at the helm we continue to build on the revolving door of creatives, executives and administrators who have contributed to our every evolution, change in direction, backtrack and push. TBWA|ANG thanks every single person who has taught us, left their mark with us, designed us and even taught us the hard way. The celebrations have been memorable but the scars, life lessons”.
WHAT IS THE PREDOMINANT FEELING ON TURNING 55 YEARS YOUNG?
“This is a milestone year that we dedicate to gratitude, grace and God(frey). Thank you to our every client over the past 55 years. Through thick and thin, some have kept us afloat, some have given us a run for our money and some have taught us more than our combined degrees, even on the slowest of days
BUSINESS 60
Our greatest love, McDonald’s, our partners for nearing three decades. Thank you for your on-going trust and collaboration, thank you for the magic that is the brand and the people behind those Golden Arches. What a ride, what a romance!
Thank you to BOV for giving us the opportunity to showcase our ideas in the banking industry, giving us the space to deliver work that pushes the envelope of creativity just slightly beyond those boundaries. Thank you to Bizzilla, our publishing partners who provide us with the opportunity to showcase our beautiful island and a special thank you to our partners Browns, there is no greater joy than to work with a client who is so deeply imbedded in the want to secure a healthier community”.
IN 2006 ANG JOINED THE GLOBAL COLLECTIVE, TBWA, HAS THIS BEEN A FRUITFUL
MARRIAGE?
“Joining the TBWA collective has been a gift that keeps on giving. A name that has fixed us with global sister companies who have given us opportunity for creative and intellectual challenge and growth. People who have celebrated our success and consoled our failures, a true collective of smart, generous and like-minded people who strive for excellence in an industry that can often feel competitive and isolating”.
WITH AN AGENCY BORN EVERY MINUTE, HOW DOES TBWA\ANG MANAGE TO COMPETE WITH SMALLER, DRIVEN START-UPS?
“Every courageous start-up agency that lines the horizon helps keep us on our toes. There’s no guidelines coming into this industry and definitely none to survive it. Here’s what we’ve learned along the way: Treat other agencies with courtesy and dignity, focus on what you do best, grow yourself in the direction that works for you and have the courage to plough ahead with conviction and elegance. Take calculated risks, don’t over stretch yourself financially, be prudent with your money, be generous with your talent. Be patient when plans fall through, tomorrow is another day. You’ve been here before, it will be ok”.
AT 55, DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’VE BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, BOUGHT THE T-SHIRT? HOW DOES A 55-YEAR-OLD AGENCY REMAIN EXCITED?
“Adrenalin seekers don’t age with time, the energy is innate and youthful. 55 is the chronological age dictated by our birth date,

it’s the number upon which our experience is piled. Experience puts you in the know, wise to shortcuts, to predictions to side-stepping potential potholes”.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ALONG THE WAY THAT HAS CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR CURRENT SUCCESS?
“We have built our business on pillars that emanated organically from our value system, in retrospect our core values have never changed and here’s what has worked for us:
Every complex problem comes with a plethora of potential solutions, it is vital to focus on the positives. Anything we set our mind to, is there for the taking, investing in making our work dramatically excellent has been essential. Good is just not good enough. Every loss has its silver lining, a lesson to be learned.
Surrounding ourselves with people who excel in their field of expertise and giving them the space and time to find their footing has been quintessential. Developing a safe space with zero tolerance for any form of discrimination as a base for creative thinkers to feel home and productive. Being mindful of the pitfalls of micromanaging versus guiding and walking alongside, a necessary learning curve.
Money is important, clients want to save it, employees need to earn it. Keeping a watchful eye on that profit margin and sometimes
having to rely on buckets of courage to make those oh so difficult
HOW DOES THE AGENCY MANAGE TO STILL KEEP FUN AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE TBWA\ANG EXPERIENCE?
“The world of advertising is a world that seeks to communicate brands to the community. Being an integral part of our community, helping whenever and whoever has needed, but couldn’t afford to communicate a message that mattered, has fed our sense of humanity. Providing the team with the opportunity to work on more than targets and sales, doing work that matters, where it matters, helps us feed our need for meaning and purpose in our professional

PROTECTING OUR LEGACY
LAST YEAR, ALMOST 70,000 PEOPLE VISITED THE HERITAGE SITES RUN BY DIN L-ART Ħ ELWA, MALTA’S VERSION OF THE UK’S NATIONAL TRUST. THAT IS QUITE A NUMBER WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT THERE WERE ONLY 14 SITES THAT OPENED REGULARLY TO THE PUBLIC – AND THAT THIS WAS THANKS TO A DEDICATED NETWORK OF OVER 150 VOLUNTEERS.
The sites themselves vary, from impressive towers to chapels, a cemetery and even a lighthouse, on all the three islands.
Many of these were restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, which – since it was founded in 1965 by Judge Maurice Caruana Curran – has helped to save around 40 landmarks, some dating back to Medieval times.
Some of these sites are given to Din l-Art Ħelwa under guardianship agreements, allowing the organisation to maintain them, and to make them accessible to the public when possible. This means organising a veritable army of volunteers to man the sites, which attract not only tourists but also school groups, which go there to create lasting memories of some of the marvellous monuments that remain testimony to the eras that form the islands’ history. All this helps a great deal to raise awareness, not only of the islands’ heritage but also of the environmental challenges.
The non-profit organisation relies not only on volunteers but also on sponsors, without whose funds very little could have been achieved. Sponsors not only donate funds but also actively encourage their employees to help at the sites, and often use the venues for their corporate events, from social gatherings to training and seminars.
However, Din l-Art Ħelwa does so much more than most people imagine. It also has a Heritage and Environment Protection Committee, for example, which checks planning applications for abuse of the environment and inappropriate development. Last year they filed objections to 1,500 incidents – no small task when you consider that there were around 7,500 applications filed in 2021, the last full year for which figures are currently available. Some of these objections end up in court, resulting in important judgments on points of planning policy which will positively shape applications in the future.

WORDS DIN L-ART Ħ ELWA
Din l-Art
Din l-Art Ħelwa has also created a tool which the public can use to track objections, enabling a growing cohort of people to express their views on various aspects of proposed developments, particularly when these have a negative impact on heritage buildings or on their surroundings and cultural context.
Apart from restoration, the NGO mobilises an army of members and volunteers to help with one-off activities such as clean-ups and treeplantings. It is, for example, one of the entities running Majjistral, which has been a National Park since 2007.
It has also set up a section called Code Red to reach out to the young at heart, who are increasingly active when it comes to the environment and the fight against climate change. Being able to draw on these groups has allowed Din l-Art Ħelwa to take on even more projects, boosted by these eager volunteers.
The fact that it can draw on so much dedication encourages Din l-Art Ħelwa to take on more and more events, from the annual Bir Miftuħ music concert, to open days at its sites and fundraising events.
Remaining financially sustainable is never easy, but it's hard-working and pragmatic approach has enabled it to keep up its momentum. The latest project – a wooden bungalow that was used to train Maltese emigrants to Australia – will cost vast amounts, none of which would be possible without corporate support.
But if you speak to the wardens at the sites, what they recall is the look on visitors’ faces when they enter a tower or chapel, and gaze in awe at the might and the magic of Malta’s amazing legacy.
Find Din l-Art Ħelwa on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. Many of its sites have their own pages, which give the latest information on the opening times. You can also become a member, volunteer, leave a donation or simply just talk about us.

A JOURNEY TOWARDS STARLIGHT
HE HAS RECENTLY SIGNED UP TO WASSERMAN MUSIC, THE SAME BOOKING AGENTS IN CHARGE OF BILLIE EILISH, COLDPLAY AND ED SHEERAN’S TOURING SCHEDULE, AND HIS RECORD DEAL WITH POLYDOR MUSIC COULDN’T HAVE BEEN MORE FRUITFUL; HIS CHANNEL NOW REACHING OVER 20K SUBSCRIBERS ON YOUTUBE.
I’m talking, of course, about singer-songwriter Shaun Farrugia, he who has had thousands jumping and singing to his music during the last Isle of MTV concert. Shaun Farrugia is Malta’s very own boy wonder, living proof that - given enough talent and determination - yes, our homegrown talent is perfectly capable of flourishing even under the harsher spotlight of the international stage.
And flourishing, he certainly is. But not so much as to lose sight of his origins, or to lose that charmingly humble persona that instinctively makes anyone he comes in contact with root for him. Shaun famously started out composing songs from his bedroom in San Ġ wann, but today he’s based in London. I asked Shaun, in a world where TikTok stars hav e led many to dream that you can hit it big even from the smallest village anywhere, how crucial was this move?
“Making music is a long journey. You start from your bedroom, yes, or from any room where you feel creative. Once you start putting your work out there you can gauge reactions, start building a following. And once you get bigger, or move to another country, opportunities start to grow. You get the opportunity to connect with people who can open doors. You start from anywhere, but travelling and going to the places where the industries are mainly located, to where those who have the tools to help you are based… that’s always a good thing,” he tells me.
I ask him if he’s seen his actual music change since he’s taken things to the next level. His reply is refreshingly honest - "I recently found
the first song I wrote five years ago, and compared to today, the music is unrecognisable. I can’t believe that was me. It's amazing how much I've learned over this time, it almost feels like I evolve with each song" he replies. "I recently found the first song I wrote five years ago, and compared to today, the music is unrecognisable. I can’t believe that was me. It's amazing how much I've learned over this time, it almost feels like I evolve with each song" he replies.
So he’s still learning? He nods emphatically: “In this industry, once you stop learning, you stagnate.”
It’s no secret that the label has a lot to do with the sound and direction of an artist. How is his partnership with Polydor developing? Perhaps predictably, he replies that he loves the label and the team. Catching the look in my eye he goes: “No, I don’t want you to think I’m just saying that to score points. They’ve become my family. A family that understands the music process and the time it takes to grow. They’ve done it all before, so they’re in a good position to know how to see something that can be developed further, to help me shape my talent.”
The passion in his voice is seriously too genuine for this to be a mere stock reply, especially when he tells me that I should not be asking what Polydor are bringing to Shaun Farrugia - or viceversa - but what the two can achieve together. And then the clincher: “It’s a relationship. Suddenly, you realise that you speak to them about everything, not just work, but also about life itself.”

I turn my questions onto a more personal angle. From when he showed up on Sigala’s doorstep in London and ended up staying, there’ve been multiple highlights in Shaun’s career since. He confides that his proudest moment was not seeing the hundreds of thousands of people show up to his concert, but hearing his songs being played on the radio.
“It’s actually making my parents cry with happiness. When my father tells me that he’s proud of me - that is my highlight. Making my parents happy is incredible. And so is being in Malta, meeting strangers who are all so excited for me, who wish me well and who just stop to have a chat,” he confides. “I do love Malta and all it entails.”
One thing that strikes me about Shaun’s music is his range as a musician; he is as comfortable collaborating with Martin Garrix on party anthems like ‘Starlight’ as he is working on solo tracks like ‘Dear God’ (1.1m views on YouTube and counting), and ‘I Don’t Wanna Fall Asleep Yet’, which showcase Shaun’s striking vocals and musicianship. Which one is the real Shaun?
“The truth is the real Shaun is in the lyrics, the music and the meaning behind it. I write from the heart, always. I never write something I don’t believe in. I gravitate towards acoustic as a solo artist. But the beauty of music is collaboration and meeting people expressing themselves. I love collaborations in different forms, maybe in dance form, maybe not. It’s about coming together and making music. And people’s reaction to the lyrics. ‘Starlight’ has been tattooed on so many chests!”
Likewise, ‘Dear God’ has pretty much reached cult status online. Reading people’s comments is heart-warming, everyone explaining how they relate to it. Some go as far as translating the lyrics into Spanish and Portuguese. It is lovely to see.
“The fact that people can connect to what I feel, this is the purpose of what music is all about. If somebody can connect to your song, you’ve succeeded,” he replies.
I do feel that all his tracks have one thing in common. They’re all about love. Something else that’s refreshing about this guy is that he has made no secret of just how into his girlfriend he is. There’s nothing of the ‘dudebro’ energy about him, thankfully.
“My girlfriend is my best friend, everybody knows it. Every song I’ve written I can relate to her. But also to friends and family; all kinds of love. So they also are for my family. I want people to feel that these are songs for the people they love, or the loves they lost. I’ve had people reach out to me because I made them think of loved ones they lost and happy memories. So I hope my music can be a catalyst to feel and talk about love and good experiences,” he says.
And on that lovely note, our interview comes to an end.
“Yes, the future looks bright,” he concludes, semi-shyly. I can’t say I disagree.
Shaun will be performing at Rock The Fort on June 29th. Tickets from www.showshappening.com

A TASTE OF SUCCESS:
AWARD-WINNING CHEF MARIA SAMMUT SHARES HER CULINARY INSIGHTS IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU GOT STARTED IN THE CULINARY INDUSTRY. WHAT OR WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU ALONG YOUR JOURNEY?
Cooking has always been my passion, a talent that feels innate. My journey in the culinary industry began at the age of 17 when I started hosting private dinners for friends. It provided me the freedom to explore various cuisines and experiment with fusion, allowing me to discover my authentic cooking style. Over the years, I worked in some of Malta's finest restaurants, steadily climbing the ladder until I achieved the position of head chef. Opening my own restaurant was always the dream, and in 2017, Fifty Nine Republic became a reality. I draw inspiration from my love for food and the joy it brings to people's lives; there's truly no greater reward.
WHAT FACTORS MAKE FIFTY NINE REPUBLIC STAND OUT AMONG THE ISLAND'S MOST DISTINGUISHED CULINARY DESTINATIONS?
Well, it's not just about the great food and our prime location at St George's Square in the heart of Valletta. It's the ambiance we have carefully crafted—a refined yet relaxed dining experience. We want our guests to feel at ease, enjoying themselves while creating lasting memories through exceptional cuisine. Though we strive for perfection, we aim to break away from the intimidating atmosphere often associated with fine dining. That's why we embrace the concept of "casual fine dining."
FIFTY NINE REPUBLIC IS RENOWNED FOR ITS EXQUISITE AND VERSATILE MENU, NEW EVERY SEASON. CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS WHEN DEVELOPING THIS SEASON’S MENU? WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
Expect a seamless blend of the past, present, and future.
Trusting the creative process means taking calculated risks while contin uously elevating the dining experience. The journey begins months in advance, drawing inspiration from travel and seeking out remarkable seasonal produce. Having launched close to 15 menus since our inception, we understand what our patrons love and what works well. Yet, the challenge lies in consistently delivering new and exciting offerings, catering to our cherished regular guests. Our objective i s to present a menu brimming with such tempting options that it becomes difficult to choose just one dish.
YOU WERE RECENTLY AWARDED “TOP MALTESE CHEF 2023” BY WRMC AWARDS, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?
Recently being honoured as the "Top Maltese Chef 2023" by the WRMC Awards holds tremendous significance for me. It's a great honour, especially considering my age and the fact that the culinary industry remains predominantly mal e-dominated.
While accolades like this award and the Michelin plate are certainly de lightful, my true satisfaction stems from the compliments of our guests and the sight of empty plates returning to the kitchen. Their enjoyment and fulfilment are the ultimate rewards in my cra ft.

RELOCATING THE VICTOR PASMORE GALLERY
BACK IN SEPTEMBER 2015, FONDAZZJONI PATRIMONJU MALTI TOOK OVER THE MANAGEMENT OF THE VICTOR PASMORE GALLERY WITH THE INTENTION OF BRINGING TO LIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF PASMORE AND THE MALTESE MODERN MOVEMENT.
Victor Pasmore (1908–1998) has long been considered the leading protagonist of the British abstract movement – a trend he experimented with and developed throughout his long artistic career. Fortunately for us, Pasmore relocated to Malta in 1966, eventually leaving behind this outstanding collection of works which traces his transition from relief-painting and constructions, to painting.
In March 2020, with the onset of the pandemic, the Victor Pasmore Gallery closed its doors to the public one last time. The collection was then housed at the Polverista Gallery – an annexe to the Central Bank of Malta in Valletta. As museums and galleries worldwide began to shut their doors, here at FPM the search was on for new and larger premises that would not only house the Pasmore collection, but would also have the space to host other artworks by Maltese artists, thus putting Pasmore and the local modern art scene into context.
In September 2021, FPM entered into an agreement with APS Bank whereby the Foundation was given use of the bank’s former main office, APS House, in Valletta. Works on this historical palazzo commenced almost immediately – an extensive and laborious job involving the restoration of original features, a gallery lighting
system, office space, and so forth. The result promises to be an outstanding art and cultural hub of international standard, ensuring an optimal experience for visitors.
As works on the premises are almost complete, the Foundation has launched a new website for the gallery that not only provides a calendar of events, but also informative documentation on Pasmore and his Maltese contemporaries, academic papers, interviews, and strong visual content.
The Victor Pasmore Gallery is set to open towards the end of 2023. But, before that the space will be launched with FPM’s forthcoming exhibition opening at the new premises in September of this year. This exhibition that has been years in the making – In Search of Line, delves into one of history of art’s greatest subjects of exploration: the line, which has manifested itself in many ways, from drawing to weaving, writing, singing and storytelling. FPM aims to break down the line to its core elements, exploring the artist’s drive to create and represent images, meanings, and emotions through line.

FETA AND KALE FILO PIE
INGREDIENTS
6 Kale leaves
1 Onion
1 Garlic clove
100g Feta cheese
1 Soft sheep ġbejna
6 Large sprigs of thyme
½ tsp Black pepper
2tbsp Zaatar
3tsp Honey
A handful of sesame seeds
6 Sheets of filo pastry
Salt to taste
Olive oil as needed
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Peel the onions and slice thinly, finely chop the garlic. Place the pan on a medium heat and once hot drizzle olive oil in. Cook the onions and garlic for 3 minutes until golden brown. In the meantime, remove the stems from the kale and roughly chop. Wash thoroughly and add to the pan. Add a splash of water if you see things are sticking. Pick the thyme leaves and roughly chop. Add it to the pan and keep cooking until the kale has wilted. Remove from the heat and cool for a few minutes. In a bowl combine the ġbejna and feta and add in the kale mixture. Add in the pepper and zaatar. Taste and season with salt as needed.
Lay a sheet of filo on a clean work surface and drizzle a little bit of olive oil. Lay a second sheet of filo overlapping the third of the first so that you end up with one much larger sheet. Repeat with the remaining sheets so that you end up with a large sheet with three layers. Take the cheese and kale mix and spread it along the bottom edge of the filo. To close the sheet, tart from the bottom and roll it up into a sausage.
Take one end and lower it into the outer edge of the pie tin. Allow it to naturally fall into a coil. Drizzle the honey over the top and sprinkle with sesame seeds till a nice layer has formed. Sprinkle a little salt over the top and finish with some more olive oil. Bake in the oven for twenty minutes or till a deep golden brown.

MALTESE FOOD CULTURE
MALTA HAS A UNIQUE AND DIVERSE FOOD CULTURE INFLUENCED BY ITS HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN.
Maltese people enjoy dining out, especially on weekends and special occasions. There is a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and eateries offering diverse cuisines, including Maltese, Mediterranean, Italian, and international options. In urban areas like Valletta, Sliema, and St. Julian's, you'll find a bustling dining scene with various restaurants catering to different tastes and budgets.
Many Maltese families take pride in preparing traditional recipes passed down through generations. Home-cooked meals often feature fresh ingredients, including locally sourced produce and seafood. Maltese households typically enjoy communal meals, and family members often participate in the cooking process together. Cooking at home allows individuals to showcase their culinary skills and preserve traditional recipes.
Maltese culture is rich in festive traditions, and food plays a central role in these celebrations. For example, during Easter, traditional dishes like Qagħaq tal-Għasel (honey rings) and Figolli (almondfilled pastries) are prepared and shared. During Christmas, a popular sweet treat called Qubbajt (nougat) is enjoyed. These festive traditions often involve families coming together to cook and share special meals.
In Malta, each town and village has its own patron saint, and the feast day celebrations are significant events in the Maltese calendar. During these village feasts, food stalls are set up, and traditional Maltese dishes are served, including, pastizzi, and traditional sweets. It's a time of community celebration and socialising, with locals and visitors coming together to enjoy the festivities.
Being an island nation, Malta offers a variety of delicious and fresh seafood. Look out for dishes like Lampuki Pie (fish pie), Aljotta (fish soup), and Stuffat tal-Fenek (rabbit stew).
This is a popular Maltese snack consisting of flaky pastries filled with either ricotta cheese (pastizzi tal-irkotta) or mushy peas (pastizzi tal-piżelli ). They are often enjoyed as a quick bite and can be found in many bakeries and street stalls.
A traditional Maltese bread typically topped with tomatoes, onions, olives, capers, tuna, and local sheep's cheese called ġbejniet. It's a satisfying and hearty snack or light meal.
Rabbit is a staple meat in Maltese cuisine, and you'll find it prepared in various ways such as rabbit stew (Stuffat tal-Fenek) or fried rabbit (Fenkata). It's a must-try for meat lovers.
Gozo, one of the islands forming part of Malta, has its own distinct culinary traditions. Look out for Gozitan cheese (ġbejniet), Gozitan ftira (a variation of the Maltese ftira), and local delicacies like the Gozitan ftira pie and Qagħaq tal-Għasel (honey rings).
When dining out, consider ordering a Maltese platter, also known as a mezze-style dish. These platters typically include a variety of local appetizers such as Bigilla (a thick fava bean dip), Kapunata (Maltese ratatouille), Ħobż biż-żejt (bread with tomato paste, olive oil, and toppings), and a selection of local cheeses and cured meats. Don't miss out on traditional Maltese sweets like Kannoli (ricottafilled pastry tubes), Ħelwa tat-Tork (sweet sesame seed bars), and Biskuttini tal-Lew ż (almond cookies).

THE NOT SO HUMBLE CHICKPEA
CHICKPEAS,
ALSO KNOWN AS GARBANZO BEANS, ARE A POPULAR LEGUME CROP CULTIVATED IN VARIOUS REGIONS WORLDWIDE, INCLUDING MALTA.
They are usually sown in Malta during the cooler months, typically between November and February and are ready for harvest when the pods have dried and turned brown, usually around 100-120 days after planting. You can also find them wild along rubble walls.
To harvest them, you have to pull out the entire plant or cut it near the base and then hang in a dry, well-ventilated area, for 2-3 weeks. Once completely dry, they are shaken to release the beans.
Hummus is probably the most popular way people consume them, and the liquid found in the canned varieties – aquafaba - is a great substitute for egg for vegans. Whip some up with pure chocolate and a drop of vanilla essence and chill for a few hours to make a fabulous ‘free-from’ mousse.
In Malta, chickpeas are also used in traditional cuisine and can be added to vegetable dishes, mixed with pasta, or combined with
other legumes like lentils for a nutritious and filling meal. In addition to these dishes, chickpeas can be roasted and seasoned with spices as a crunchy snack or added to vegetarian curries and rice dishes for added texture and protein.
One way you will find them in Malta, which you may not find elsewhere, is candied. Often found in small traditional village bars and grocery stores, these sugary, crunchy delights are delicious!
Made by boiling sugar and water with a vanilla extract or lemon zest and then coating cooked chickpeas in this mixture; the syrup will gradually thicken and coat the chickpeas.
They are allowed to cool down and they crisp up!
Eat as a snack or atop icecream for a truly indulgent treat!

THE SHE WORD INTERVIEWS TITZIANA CECI, GENERAL MANAGER, BROWN’S PHARMA LIMITED
The SHE Word is an empowering podcast for Women available on YouTube and Spotify, also on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok, and now available on Air Malta’s in-flight entertainment system.
The podcast is based on the concept of three women and the show’s host Trudy Kerr, sitting around a kitchen table, sharing a bottle of wine and having ‘Conversations women rarely have, but really should’. The show explores a wide range of female centric topics; Parenthood, Menopause, Body Image, Social Media, Relationships, Sex and so much more. The SHE Word has reached over 1 million views in just 9 months and ranks in the 10% of Spotify podcasts in the world, thanks to its informal format and refreshingly honest discussion.
One topic which has been frequently requested for discussion is Women in Business, and this show is available on the Air Malta in-flight system. The show addresses the very real challenges still impacting women in business today. Recent statistics show that across Europe the pay gap is 13% in favour of men who occupy the same positions, slightly better in Malta with the pay gap sitting at 10%. 38% of women have experienced h arassment in the workplace, nearly 70% of women accepted the salary they were offered without negotiating, while only 52% of men did the same. On The SHE Word ‘Women in Business’, three prominent local business women discuss their journeys to C-level roles in a competitive and male dominated landscape.
One of the show’s guests Titziana Ceci, General Manager at Malta's largest and most recognisable retail pharmacy chain, Brown’s, offers empowering advice for Women in Business; "One of the things women need to do is to understand what we are strong at to persevere to do that; and for the things we are weaker at, we have
to surround ourselves with people that make up for our weaknesses. This will allow us to be strong where we are strong." Titziana goes on to speak very clearly about modern day challenges for the woman who wants to follow her career dreams, and when asked why and she believes women represent less than 5% of CEOs around the world, to outline what she has been doing at Brown’s to bring about very real change. Tiziana not only works with a predominantly female workforce, she is doing all she can to empower female employees to take on responsibilities and believe in themselves. She has worked hard to create a company structure at Brown’s which is supported by a female dominant management team which brings many tangible benefits to the company culture.
This month, Brown’s celebrates it’s 25th Anniversary. It is Malta's largest and most recognisable retail pharmacy group. Established in 1998 by two pharmacists and long-time friends, Robert Spiteri and Alexander Fenech, who were brought together in business through a shared passion for a customer centric approach and a vision of creating a business culture where like-minded people can flourish and grow the business as a result.
Keeping with this theme of focus on people, Brown’s supports a wide range of community, communication and environment-based projects across the Maltese Islands, enriching local lives far beyond the pharmacy counter.

Furthermore, Air Malta is bound by international regulations which prohibit the embarkation or the carriage of drunken passengers. However, since you are reading this article, Air Malta‘s Flight Safety Committee is confident that you are a law-abiding and exemplary passenger. Indeed, the cabin crew may need your assistance to restrain another passenger in the unlikely event that he or she may act irresponsibly during the flight. The consumption of one’s own alcoholic beverages in-flight goes against Air Malta policy.

Smoking is not allowed during any phase of the flight and in any area of the aircraft. USE OF PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES ON BOARD
TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
Devices that can send or receive data by wireless means, such as mobile phones and tablets, may be used during all phases of the flight provided the device has 'Flight Mode' capability and that this is enabled. If the data transmission capability cannot be switched off (whilst the device is operating), the device itself must be switched off completely for the duration of the flight. Bluetooth wireless connectivity is allowed. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Accessories, such as headphones, must not obstruct access to the aisle. The use of Wi-Fi with Flight Mode enabled is permitted on some of our aircraft that are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system. The Cabin Crew will make an announcement on aircraft that are so equipped, to inform you when Wi-Fi can be enabled on your PEDs.
NON-TRANSMITTING PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDS)
These could include, but are not limited to, items such as DVD players, electronic games, music players and personal cameras. Such devices shall be safely secured in the customers’ hand (handheld) or a pocket during taxi, take-off and landing. Larger devices shall be stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing.
ARE THERE TIMES WHEN I CANNOT USE MY ELECTRONIC DEVICES?
Under certain circumstances, your Flight Crew or Cabin Crew may ask you to switch off all Personal Electronic Devices. This may happen during automatic landings, low visibility takeoff or landing, or during emergency situations.
YOU SHOULD INFORM THE CABIN CREW WHEN …
Your portable electronic device is damaged, becomes hot, produces smoke, is lost, or falls into the seat structure. If safe to do so, the device must be switched off immediately.
LAPTOPS AND NOTEBOOKS
Larger devices (e.g. laptops) may be used during boarding and during the flight, however they must be switched off and stowed away safely during taxi, take-off and landing since they could hinder an emergency evacuation. 'Flight Mode' must be enabled. Use of Bluetooth connectivity is allowed. Use of Wi-Fi under Flight Mode is allowed on some aircraft which are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system.
CAN I USE HEADPHONES?
Personal headphones can be used during all phases of the flight. However, we ask you to remove your headphones during the safety briefing. For safety reasons, customers sitting in an emergency exit row must refrain from using headphones during taxi, take-off and landing.
If you require more information, please refer to the table below which includes a list of Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) which can be used onboard Air Malta flights by phase of flight. Please do not hesitate to contact any member of our cabin crew if you have any further questions.
* The use of Wi-Fi with Flight Mode enabled is permitted on some of our aircraft that are equipped with an in-flight entertainment system. Safety Notice: The carriage of damaged, defective or recalled lithium batteries or devices is prohibited on-board Air Malta aircrafts.
