Expressionist Scream Munchmuseet by estudioHerreros

The new Munch Museum is a rethinking of the museum typology, and stands as a dynamic hub for contemporary culture as well as a cohesive element for the community of Oslo.

After a protracted process that began in 2009 with an international competition, the building that is the new home of the Scandinavian museum finally opened its doors at the end of October. The project, commissioned to the practice of Juan Herreros and his associate Jens Richter, conceives the construction not simply as a facility for the safeguarding and dissemination of the work of Edvard Munch, but as a critical revision of the museum typology. The vertical volume has an important role to play in the urban fabric, moving the Norwegian capital’s center of gravity towards its meeting with the fjord. An ascending visitor route connects the foyer (a public space featuring recreational, commercial, cultural, and hospitality uses) to the rooftop terraces. Along the way, museum-goers get an idea of the scheme’s complexity from the complementary programs they come across: restoration rooms, administrative offices, a library, an education center, and so on. On the outside, an undulating skin of perforated aluminum with varying degrees of transparency creates an enigmatic and evanescent image, reacting to slight climate stimuli through an appearance that changes with the time of day and with the seasons. The principles of minimal carbon footprint, sustainability, and recycling all had a part in determining the construction process, which, focused on experimentation and innovation, was an event in and of its own accord.
