OFFERING FLEXIBILITY TO FLEETS Al-Futtaim Automotive Group’s commercial vehicles division works with local bodybuilders to create tailor-made solutions for a range of customer requirements.

AL-FUTTAIM – HINO T he past 12 months has seen the successful dealer and automotive brand partnership of the commercial vehicles division of the Al-Futtaim Automotive Group and HINO continue to re-write the light duty truck handbook in the UAE with the pair racing ahead of the competition with growth of 25% from 2018 to 2019. HINO falls under the commercial vehicles division of the Al-Futtaim Automotive Group and, as such, offers customers access to a wellestablished network of 3S facilities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Between 2015 and 2019, HINO trucks enjoyed a rise in market share from 8% to 33%, effectively doubling the size of the unit’s sales and employee numbers subsequently rose to 105. The company is determined to ensure that growth continues unabated and is focused on getting closer to customers through the HINO aftersales Total Support programme which is designed to minimise the downtime of vehicles.

Indeed, Al-Futtaim and HINO have effectively answered the increased demand for commercial vehicles products and services in the market by offering comprehensive tailor-made solutions to customers, including genuine spare parts, service contracts, 24/7 service support and specialised technical support. To help fleets optimise the total cost of truck ownership and make a positive contribution to the bottom line, experts from Al-Futtaim’s Commercial Vehicle Division are providing eco-driving training to drivers of fuel delivery operators. Offered through the ‘HINO Total Support’ scheme, their training helps fleet owners improve fuel efficiency, minimise the cost of wear and tear, reduce service and maintenance costs as well as insurance premiums and decrease the risk of major road accidents. In addition, financial, rental and insurance packages complete a compelling offering for fleets. According to Ramez Hamdan, general manager, HINO, Al-Futtaim Automotive Group, HINO trucks are

cheaper on operational costs, have lower diesel consumption and require less maintenance and bigger service intervals than rivals in their class. “HINO trucks are known for their durability, versatility and the ‘Total Support’ aftersales concept in terms of service contracts and spare parts availability, makes them the trusted partner for companies – I thank our partners for their trust in our trucks and confirm our commitment to deliver our dedicated aftersales solutions,” says Hamdan. The versatility of the HINO trucks is opening exciting new areas for the company to operate in. The brand’s presence in the F&B industry, for instance, has been increasing year-on-year. Its progress has also been boosted by the winning of major tenders for waste management vehicles in Abu Dhabi with the West Coast Group company and in the Northern Emirates with sector-leader Bee’ah. Trucks carrying the Japanese marque include the heavy-duty Hino 700 Series

(with up to 100t GVW). The Hino 500 Series (with an operating capacity range from 10 to 28t GVW), meanwhile, offers a range of applications, such as tipper trucks, curtain siders, reefer trucks as well as general cargo (the Hino 500 Series maximises efficiency and significantly reduces consumption thanks to class-leading engine and transmission choices, says Hamdan). The last year, however, has arguably belonged to the Hino 300 Series: a range that offers payload capacities up to 6t and different engine power options of 140 and 156 hp. The incredibly flexible light trucks sold in the UAE are able to complete any role efficiently and safely; and have become the vehicle of choice for the major fuel delivery firms in the Emirates. More than 220 HINO 300 series 714 NWB tons and 916 SWB 6 tons trucks were handed over to fuel delivery operator customers in 2019, including CAFU, the Middle East’s first on-demand fuel delivery service app. It’s a relationship the places the trucks at the forefront of

the digital revolution transforming the UAE market. While purchases by ENOC and ADNOC, have further cemented its position as the preferred light and medium trucks partner for businesses in the country. All three firms have subsequently won major key tenders with major companies in the transportation and food and beverage sectors, such as Almarai, National Food Company, Al Rawabi, Emirates Transport, Falcon Pack, Marmum Dairy, Masafi. With so many now performing a critical role in the infrastructure of fuel supply in the UAE, Hamdan is understandably proud to see the trucks proving their worth across the country. “We are very pleased to see HINO becoming the backbone of the booming fuel delivery sector,” he enthuses. To build the trucks to specification, HINO teamed up with GORICA and CMC to carry out the customisation of the trucks for CAFU, ENOC and ADNOC respectively, “to ensure they fit the operational needs for each business and conform to the set safety standards in the UAE,” explains Hamdan. The success in the fuel delivery sector is the result of several years of hard work in establishing a sophisticated support network for fleets. According to Hamdan, Al-Futtaim’s HINO operation aspires to seamlessly integrate with operators in several ways to ensure all-important uptime is maintained. Fleets are helped out in the field where they need assistance the most. “We can get our mobile service van to a customer site at any time, 24/7,” Hamdam

says. “Effectively, we don’t disturb the customer operation, moreover, our service intervals are more than our competitors’ which gives the client an advantage where the truck is stopping fewer times for a service.” With many customers opting for service and maintenance or repair and maintenance contracts, the company can also fall back on substantial aftersales infrastructure both within Al-Futtaim and from the Hino Middle East parts depot in Jebal Ali Free Zone. Located on the outskirts of Dubai, the facility ensures that parts availability is very high. It will also open a new 3S (sales, service and spare parts) facility in Sharjah this year. The flexibility of the Hino range has enabled Al-Futtaim to offer different solutions to a multitude of sectors in a market that is more interested in safety, reliability and productivity than ever before. Their rise to prominence has also been complemented by an evolution in the trucks themselves. A redesigned 500 Series offering a modernised exterior as well as a host of enhanced safety features and driver comfort improvements has been warmly received, for example. However, with our interview drawing to a close, Hamdan singles out the Hino 300 Series hybrid truck as a vehicle to look out for in a year where the world will arrive for Expo 2020 Dubai. The event will celebrate advances in sustainability and mobility as the world confronts the challenge of climate change in the decades ahead. The Hino 300 Series hybrid truck typifies the solutions that

will be needed and the truck was the first to employ a Euro 4 and EVV compliant 4L diesel engine matched to an auxiliary electric motor that is emission-free amd significantly reduces emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide. A UAE leader in sustainable mobility, Al-Futtaim has already begun rolling it out to customers. A HINO SERIES FOR ALL OCCASIONS Hino 300 Series The Light Duty Truck “is your dynamic business partner”. With a payload capacity up to 6 ton and different engine power options of 140 and 156 hp – there is no job that the Hino 300 Series cannot perform efficiently and safely. Hino 500 Series The Medium Duty Truck, “is your perfect work horsepower”. With an operating capacity range from 10 to 28t GVW, the Hino 500 Series achieves low emissions and excellent fuel consumption with numerous safety features. Hino 700 Series The Heavy Duty Truck range up to 100 ton. Delivering bigger profits through outstanding performance and durability, the revolutionary Hino 700 Series is the new standard for trucks in the 21st century.

Today, hundreds of thousands of workers and students travel on Ashok Leyland buses every single day in the UAE. Swaidan Trading also recently added Ashok Leyland’s Partner pickup truck, a highly practical and capable light commercial vehicle, to its range. Al Naboodah expanded its light commercial vehicles offering in 2014 with the addition of the SAIC Motor Corporation’s Maxus brand to its portfolio, including the versatile V80, which is the only vehicle that can be registered with both 15 and 18 seats in the UAE, as well as being DOT and RTA approved for school transportation. DAF Trucks are well known for their quality, reliability and fuel efficiency. In 2018, DAF celebrated its 90th anniversary in a year in which it also registered record numbers in terms of production and sales. The feat was repeated in 2019 during a period when DAF also successfully rolled out its new electric truck range in Europe, delivering to early-adopting clients. These have already covered 150,000 fully electric kilometres in just one year with immaculate results and feedback from the customers. The industry trend is towards greener vehicles, and DAF can offer trucks with both Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions standards. DAF trucks also consume less fuel, thereby helping to reduce their carbon footprint.

AJIT KUMAR Chief Operating Officer: Commercial, Transport and Electrical, for Al Naboodah Group Enterprises.

DAF trucks offer very low total cost of ownership as they are manufactured to the highest quality standards and adhere to best-in-class specifications. This makes them more reliable and durable even when deployed for the most demanding applications in the UAE. DAF Trucks’ after-sales service and spare parts are competitively priced, further contributing to Swaidan Trading’s commitment to a lower total cost of ownership. Buses are traditionally a major volume area for the company, and this continued in 2019 as well, with trucks, heavy equipment and pick-ups also showing significant signs of growth. Ajit Kumar, COO – Commercial, Transport and Electrical for Al Naboodah, says the company remains highly focused on offering the best customer experience in the market. “The industry volume is expected to be stable and improve in 2020, and we will strive to achieve the required results in all the segments and applications that are represented by us,” he explains. “We are improving year-on-year with our new brands and products that we launched in the past 3-4 years and want to continue this growth in 2020. HMC’s Hyundai Truck & Bus Regional Convention 2019 held in Dubai in March last year, highlighted the company’s considerable mid- to long-term sales, product, marketing and services ambitions for the region. It also showcased the its special vehicle line-up such as military trucks, 4x4 trucks, and more. HMC recognises itself not only as a profitmaking organisation, but as an active corporate citizen of the international community and in July 2019, it donated

an Eleccity Eco-friendly electric bus to the historic Petra site in Jordan as a CSR initiative. Together with PDTRA (Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority) HMC held a bus delivery event and Hyundai trained technicians and drivers who will operate the vehicle. Also, Hyundai supplied infrastructure for the electric vehicle, including an electric charger and charging station. Bus stop stations for the shuttle bus will be also provided by Hyundai as well as renovation for the existing bus stop with HMC planning to donate a second Eleccity bus in 1Q of 2020. One of the main strengths of the Hyundai Motor Company brand is its closeness to its distributors and customers. In October last year, HMC hosted 2019 Commercial Vehicle Product and Marketing Conference in Sichuan where Hyundai has its global plant in China. Participants, distributors from Middle East and Africa, gathered to share product information and product & marketing strategy for Sichuan plant vehicles. on course to becoming the third biggest brand in the Middle East and Africa region in 2020 and is targeting the No.1 position by 2021. In addition to new vehicles, it is developing a TCO analysis tool for HDT buyers that will break-down price competitiveness, operation cost and residual value information. Using this tool, HMC will check its weak points and improve the point for better TCO on behalf of the customer. In addition, HMC is also supplying demo vehicles to potential fleet customers to make let them experience the trucks for themselves and understand HMC’s competitive TCO. In order to fulfil its environmental responsibilities, HMC continues to develop new and more eco-friendly technology. Entering a new decade, the company continues to be at the forefront of truck technology with Hyundai Motor Hydrogen Mobility Solution winning the secondever International Truck of the Year (IToY) Truck Innovation Award in Nov 2019.

Hyundai Motor Company and H2 Energy set up the Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility joint venture (JV) in April 2019 with the goal of developing an advanced hydrogen mobility ecosystem for the use of fuel cells on trucks. The joint entity began its active progress toward clean mobility in Switzerland with the company’s planning to deliver 1,600 fuel cell electric heavy-duty trucks by 2025. The IToY Truck Innovation Award was determined by a jury of 25 commercial vehicle editors and senior journalists representing major trucking magazines from Europe and South Africa and recognised Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility Solution’s global approach to the paradigm shift toward clean energydriven mobility in the commercial vehicle sector. The project’s fleet of Xcient fuel cell electric heavy-duty trucks aims to confirm the technical and commercial readiness of vehicles, fuelling stations and hydrogen production techniques to be deployed across Europe – and potentially beyond.

BEST-IN-CLASS PERFORMANCE MAN Truck & Bus’ trucks are regarded as highly reliable, able to withstand rugged use while delivering best-in-class performance.

MAN ON THE MOVE

M

AN has had a presence in the Middle East region for over 90 years now. The journey that started in 1928 has grown in partnership with our importers. Our trucks and buses have been operating in various countries in the region. MAN Truck & Bus established its direct presence in 2006 with a regional office in Dubai. Today, MAN offers its products and services through its Importer partners in 13 countries in the Middle East region. Our products comprising the TG range of trucks and MAN & Neoplan buses are in operations in these countries. What is noteworthy is that some of the vehicles that are more than two decades old are still in operations. This is an endorsement of the product engineering capabilities and quality of aftersales service at MAN Truck & Bus. MAN trucks are regarded as highly reliable, able to withstand rugged use over our products’ typical operating life, while

delivering best-in-class performance. The engine range is proven to be powerful yet efficient, consuming lesser fuel, over long duty cycles in demanding conditions. Our vehicles are built on the lightweight concept, which allows customers to carry more payload per trip resulting in more earnings. Even a benefit of about 1t higher payload per trip can benefit operators significantly over the product’s operating life. This strengthens our argumentation for the concept of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). As part of our efforts, to enhance our presence in this region, MAN has taken certain initiatives to achieve this objective. These include enhancing partnership with truck Body Builders to offer even more attractive proposition to customers who require vehicles for special application. Already, MAN trucks can be seen in various operations in several markets in Middle East. By partnering with body builders, we will convince new customers to adopt an MAN product to meet their unique

requirements. We anticipate our chassis sales to get a boost from such partnerships. On the aftersales side our primary focus is to increase the density and quality of network partners to deliver highest levels of support to customers. Besides this, we are also looking at introducing business solutions as integrative offers that would include telematics, repair & maintenance contract, extended warranty and ProfiDrive trainings. We will also ensure high levels of parts availability for our customers. To ensure heightened customer satisfaction, we will be offering a range of training programmes to our partners and customers. MAN Truck & Bus’ premises at Dubai will also be used as a regional training centre and this will be an important step towards strengthening our presence in Middle East and African markets. “Being a highly diverse region, with markets having their unique dynamics, we see the need to impart training that address specific customer requirements.

While we have been offering trainings in the past, with this initiative we believe will help build confidence about MAN among our customers, partners and other stakeholders in the region. Experts at this centre will provide highest standards of training,” Jörg Mommertz, Senior Vice President, Head of Sales Area Middle East, Africa & Latin America (MEA&LA), MAN Truck & Bus SE and Managing Director, MAN Truck & Bus Middle East FZE said. A key aspect of this centre will be the ProfiDrive training for fleet managers, master drivers and drivers. At MAN, we lay on emphasis on offering an attractive TCO to our customers. The aspects we believe that make for an attractive TCO include long duty cycles, high up time and fuel efficiency, among others, over the product’s operating life. The driver is central to this as his performance beyond the wheel can help the customer achieve best returns on their investments. For drivers, the ProfiDrive training will help them improve their driving skills. The programme includes key aspects

such as information on product features & operations, best driving techniques for varying topographies, attaining the best fuel economy and essential maintenance. Safety is an important feature of ProfiDrive where we help drivers improve their skills. The impact of road safety has a bearing on the society. It also has a direct benefit for our customers who can attain higher operational efficiencies. At present, the Middle East offers a mix of opportunities and challenges. While global economic slowdown has impacted all markets, there are positive signs in this region that gives us confidence. The region’s economy is expected to recover in 2020, following a lacklustre performance in 2019. There are small but definite trends of economic diversification towards nonoil businesses, supported by government policies and initiatives. In this scenario, MAN expects to do well, and will make all efforts to maintain its position. This year, 2020 is an important milestone for MAN Truck & Bus. MAN recently launched its new generation truck range, which will initially be on offer for customers in the Europe markets. The new truck sets standards for usability and connectivity. The new truck is not just a truck, but rather an integrated transport solution that makes work easier for the driver, more efficient and more comfortable. The vehicle will impress both transport companies and drivers. “While the introduction of the new truck generation in the Middle East region is a given, we have not yet taken a decision on the timeline. MAN will

continue to offer the current TG range and aftersales support,” Jörg Mommertz said. We want to enhance our relationship with our customers. Besides the typical interactions regarding our products and services, we want to educate them about the concept of TCO. We would advise them about optimal fleet sizes; right vehicle specifications; need for trained drivers & best driving practices; fuel efficiency; right vehicle servicing; use of MAN Genuine parts, etc. Perhaps the most important aspect of operational cost is fuel. While most of the countries in this region benefit from very low fuel prices, even a fractional increase can impact our customers’ earnings. In other words, an innovative approach and customer satisfaction will be at the heart of our business. Our operations in the Middle East are now part of the new Sales Area that includes Middle East, Africa and Latin America. Over the years, MAN has created a strong footprint in Saudi Arabia, Oman and the UAE with active support of its Importer partners. Our achievement in terms of resilient business, vehicle population and loyal customers, has been a good learning. We want to replicate this in other markets in our Sales Area. We see huge growth potential in the Middle East and Africa with customer requirements for mining, haulage, construction and special application trucks; all of which MAN can provide. A fact well established. “Our journey started as partnerships with importers and this has helped MAN become a strong name in the Middle East.

MAN TRUCK & BUS

27

We will continue to improve and expand these associations in the future. We are committed to the Middle East region and will work with all our stakeholders to reach many more milestones and create benchmarks,” Jörg Mommertz summed up.

TIME FOR A NEW GENERATION MAN Truck & Bus has delivered its first new generation of trucks in two decades; promising to use state of the art technology to deliver fuel savings and significant reductions in CO2. The new versions of the MAN TGX, TGS, TGM or TGL feature the latest tech in assistance systems, driver orientation and digital networking. The new truck generation thus represents the development of MAN Truck & Bus from vehicle manufacturer to a provider of intelligent and sustainable transport solutions. With fuel savings of up to eight percent, the new MAN Truck Generation achieves significant reductions in CO2. The newly developed turn assist helps to prevent serious accidents in urban traffic – four years before the legally prescribed introduction. The lane change assistant also warns the driver of vehicles in the next lanes. MAN has involved customers and drivers in the development of the new generation from the beginning, so that their requirements could consistently be made part of the new vehicle.

RENAULT TRUCKS

GLOBALLY RENOWNED, A REGIONAL LEGACY Globally renowned for being sturdy and reliable, Renualt Trucks offers low fuel consumption that delivers greater productivity and enhanced operating costs. The famous brand was one of the first companies to prove that trucks can thrive in the region.

RENAULT TRUCKS R enault Trucks is a French commercial truck manufacturer with a formidable track record in the region. Always innovating it has been a pioneer in proving that heavy vehicles can be desert-proof and endure – and even thrive – in the challenging conditions of the Middle East and Africa over many decades. Even today, the region remains a vital testing ground and strategically important market for the company. The origins of Renault Trucks date back to 1894 when Marius Berliet (founder of the company) built the first engine in Lyon, and rapidly built the first the first modern truck, the “M” in 1910. In 1978 Berliet Merged with SAVIEM (2nd main commercial vehicle manufacturer owned by Renault) and this new company became the only manufacturer of heavy-duty vehicles in France called Renault V.I.

Renault V.I. then launched a completely new style range through the following years, the Renault Magnum in 1992, revolutionary, flat-floored truck which became a reference on the European truck market; then the Renault Premium in 1996, a powerful longdistance truck; Renault Kerax in 1997, the most robust construction truck to work in extreme conditions; and Renault Midlum in 2000, designed to facilitate the day-to-day work of city deliveries. In 2013, Renault Trucks renewed its entire range of commercial vehicles, Long Haul, Construction & Heavy Construction and Distribution range. Over €2 billion investment and the most stringent testing Renault Trucks has ever carried out in its entire history. This was the first time that any truck manufacturer has ever renewed its entire range at a single stroke. Today, Renault Trucks is present in over 80 countries, with 9,500 employees

throughout the world. It manufactures vehicles in France at Blainville-sur-Orne (Calvados), Bourg-en-Bresse (Ain), Lyon (Rhône) and Limoges (Haute-Vienne). In 2018, Renault Trucks sold over 54,000 trucks globally. Across the Middle East, Renault Trucks supplies transport professionals with a wide range of services and vehicles, ranging from 2.8 to 120 T, that are adapted to local and regional distribution, construction and long-distance activities. Globally renowned for being sturdy and reliable, with low fuel consumption that delivers greater productivity and enhanced operating costs, the model line-up includes D, C and K ranges. Renault Trucks Greater Middle East, with their head office in Dubai, covers most of the region of Middle East. 21 countries from Sudan to Pakistan. Renault Trucks first started selling its range in 1999; and then opened a small branch in 2003 to cover all GCC countries.

Renault Trucks rapidly signed distributor partnership with big companies in a number of countries including: Oman, Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Egypt. Its major markets in the region are the UAE, KSA, Oman, but it also has new importers in many countries like Pakistan, Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon and Kuwait where its robust and reliable vehicles have high potential. The company believes it is important to have offices in each of the countries in which it operates and has people on the ground to understand what the customer really wants. Fundamental to its market strategy and philosophy is a desire to work with closely with the importers that are running each country on its behalf as they know and respect the local culture. The trust in its importers is ultimately the key for how it wants to build its infrastructure worldwide. Renault Trucks understands that its aftermarket support is vital

A BRIEF HISTORY OF RENAULT TRUCKS UNDERSTANDING THE NEEDS OF FLEETS Renault Trucks understands that it needs to offer transport solutions and fleet-friendly help to businesses in the region, its range is built on safety, fuel efficiency, after-sales and vehicle financing.

to customers to ensure that they are a success. Encouragement to use its genuine spare parts and tap into its maintenance programme has been widely successful with the manufacturer notching a significant increase in its parts business last year. The company is now taking this approach further by extending its warranty to two years, which is a demonstration of its confidence in the quality of its manufacturing. Renault wants to prove that one part is not equal to the other and buying genuine will make a difference. Customers can trust that it is selling the right product for their vehicles. To launch this two-year warranty worldwide at the same time was a strong message to our customers that it believes in the quality of its parts, says the company. Realising that it needs to offer transport solutions and fleet-friendly help to businesses in the region, its range is built on safety, fuel efficiency, after sales and vehicle financing. However, it has also taken the initiative in the used market with the introduction of Renault Used Services, which opens up the brand to a wider net of fleet operators in the region looking for a value option. These trucks are typically three or four years old and within a respectable running range of up to 500,000km. Put together at the Bourg-en-Bresse plant in France, the recently introduced T X-Road variants are fitted with all the range’s trimmings including steel bumpers,

strengthened cab access and protective grilles mounted over the headlamps. Typically, the trucks are also fitted with the fuel-saving Optidriver transmission (almost every truck sold in Europe is fitted with the automatic transmission). The X Road upgrades help prepare the trucks for a long life in the Middle East and Africa. Add a fine selection of features and options including added fuel tanks and hydraulics for tippers and trailer roles, reinforced filtration for local conditions and fuel, under engine protection and a roof beacon system, you can purchase the ‘good as new trucks’ with an extendable warranty and save a few dirhams and dollars in the process. Trucks originally from the European market can be downgraded from Euro 6 to Euro 3 for regional buyers and can be confident of getting a truck that meets the company’s typically demanding standards. Plugging into the existing Renault Trucks International network that stretches across the Middle East and Africa region means that the company can also add a warranty backed-up by the firm’s distributors. Looking towards the next generation of trucks, the company is stepping up the production of its first fully electric vehicles at its factory in Normandy. Renault Trucks announced at the start of 2020 that it had signed a contract with the Carlsberg Group to deliver 20 D Wide Z.E. These 100% electric 26-tonne trucks will be delivered later this year.

BUILDING ON ITS HERITAGE IN THE REGION Scania has traditionally been strong in the construction segment in the Middle East but it is also finding success with fleets operating in fuel distribution and waste management.

SCANIA MIDDLE EAST S cania has a long history in the region, having been in the Gulf since 1975 through its renowned local partner in Oman. With promising growth, Scania Middle East was established in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone in 2008; initially as a delivery centre for the region to make pre-delivery inspections and operate warehousing within its 20,000sqm state-of-the-art industrial facility. By 2014, the operation expanded to become a Scania fully-owned business unit; providing comprehensive support including sales and marketing for its trucks, buses and engines, as well as training and after-sales support. Scania’s well-regarded financial service, Scania Credit started operations in 2016 for the benefit of its growing markets by supporting customers with the purchase of new trucks across the region. The company

also supports owners to renew their fleet to the New Truck Generation. The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are its biggest markets in the region. Scania also benefits from a strong presence in Oman and Qatar which contribute to a good share of its volumes. The most successful segment remains the construction segment, where Scania offers robust vehicles precisely suited to its customers’ needs supported by its top-class service. Tractors, tippers and mixers from its construction truck range are its highest selling models across the region. Scania trucks handle the toughest conditions with ease while securing an outstanding total operating economy. Fuel distribution and waste management are also very important segments where Scania offers tailor made trucks to provide customers with an outstanding total operating economy. Scania Middle East currently employs

30 personnel of various nationalities within its headquarters in Dubai (JAFZA). It has a dynamic organization in an international environment, providing comprehensive support to its partners and customers in the region. Scania’s award-winning New Truck Generation was introduced to the market in 2018 and offers fleet operators state of the art technology for better fuel economy and performance incorporated into a design inspired by the Scania heritage. The trucks offer features such as the world’s first rollover side curtain airbag; the range is also stronger, safer and aerodynamically optimised. This new generation has been specifically developed for the utmost performance, says Scania, with a pronounced focus on driver environment, interior space, safety, reliability and operating economy. Erik Bergvall, managing director, Scania Middle East, says his company was

able to capitalise on the launch and carry the momentum over the past 12 months. “During 2019, we have made some good progress in Saudi Arabia with a partly new organisation, introduction of the New Truck Generation and expansion of the Sales and Service network. Having successfully introduced the new truck generation in all our markets, feedback from customers has been great. Customers are confirming our world class fuel economy and reliability,” explains Bergvall. “We have also entered the Oil and Gas segments through a prestigious and major order of 6x6 Tractor units in Saudi Arabia.” Targets for 2020 are to grow in all markets and for Scania Middle East to enter new segments and extend its product and service offering. Bergvall adds: “We aim to take the lead in sustainability by providing our customers not just with the product but complete sustainable transport solutions.

THE NEW QUESTER ARRIVES IN THE REGION The New Quester came to the Middle East last year and introduced a range of enhancements, such as the automated ESCOT (Easy Safe Controlled Transmission) and UD Telematics.

UD TRUCKS F ounded in Japan in 1935, UD Trucks has been present in the Middle East for well over six decades. For many years, regional operations were managed directly from Japan, then on 20 March, 2006, it opened the UD Trucks Middle East regional office in JAFZA, Dubai, UAE. The team was further expended in 2016 to answer the growing demand for the brand in the region. The JAFZA regional HQ and parts distribution centre (DC) employs 16 staff with fully dedicated teams for business partners. It also receives support from (owner) Volvo Group functions such as IT, HR and logistics; and has the full support from the Group’s technology teams. It effectively has all functions needed to help MEENA customers and is active in all GCC countries, as well as Lebanon, Jordan, and North and East Africa (mainly Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia and Tunisia) – where it has, in recent years, reactivated operations in several key markets. Demonstrating its

reach, customers in EastAfrica benefit from a large range of support excluding warehouse staff and functions such as HR and IT. Overall, its most important market is Saudi Arabia, given its position as the single largest truck market in the region. This is followed by the United Arab Emirates and Oman, as well as Qatar and Kuwait, which are important markets for specific segments. In Bahrain it is the market leader with a share of approximately 50 percent. While the support infrastructure at UD Trucks ensures closeness to customers, its two recently revised core models – the heavy-duty range Quester and mediumduty truck range Croner (both tested locally prior to launch) – are fundamental to its growing success in the region. “The Quester and Croner have both proven profitable for us. This is not altogether surprising given that they were specifically designed and built with Middle East customers in mind,” explains Mourad Hedna, President, UD Trucks Middle East.

“Our models are designed with customers’ demands and business needs in mind, and so we have focused on the areas that help businesses grow. These include fuel economy, payload, robustness and a wide range of applications to extend the uptime of the truck and provide a higher ROI for our fleet customers.” In keeping with this approach, both Quester and Croner have been specifically engineered for the Middle East to help its customers stay ahead of the competition. The strategic location of the UAE-based parts DC ensures that importers enjoy short lead times, as well as lower transport and inventory costs which, in turn, benefits customers. Hedna adds: “At UD Trucks, it is not only about the products but the people behind the products. Our Gemba spirit means being close to our customers; listening to their needs, and going that extra mile to ensure they only enjoy the very best ownership experience.” UD Trucks’ models are designed to allow customers to tackle critical industry

challenges such as fuel efficiency, productivity, connectivity, and supporting and developing drivers. For example, Quester comes with a real-time Fuel Coach system that delivers instant feedback and assistance to the driver to help him or her drive as economically as possible. This has resulted in fuel savings ranging from 10-30%. Quester also offers telematics hardware that allows trucks to collect data while on the road. With this, it can assist its customers with a variety of services, including breakdown assistance, preventive maintenance analysis and corrective service scheduling, reducing downtime. UD Genuine Parts, meanwhile, demonstrate a long-term commitment to our customers and provide complete peace of mind. They guarantee maximum uptime and a minimum of 12 months warranty which is increased to 24 months when fitted in an authorised workshop. Helping to cut customers’ long-term costs, using UD Genuine parts and lubricants means that

SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR THE MIDDLE EAST Both Quester and Croner have been specifically engineered for the Middle East with millions of kilometres of testing conducted in the region.

Quester can sustain service intervals of up to 60,000 km. This is a major improvement on industry standards, meaning that Quester customers may only visit a workshop a few times per year rather than the average of 6-8. UD aftermarket support further provides highly trained technicians who only use the most up-to-date diagnostic tools to ensure that their vehicles spend the minimum amount of time in the workshop and the maximum amount of time out on the road. “We are fully committed to providing the very highest standards of customer service, ensuring that our customers can enjoy total peace of mind and confidence in their trucks, and allowing them to focus on their business.” Following the launch of the New Croner in 2017, the New Quester came to the Middle East last year. This new version of the heavyduty truck builds on the Quester’s major impact in the region by introducing a range of enhancements, such as ESCOT (Easy Safe Controlled Transmission) and UD Telematics, to enable logistics companies to tackle critical industry challenges such as fuel efficiency, productivity, connectivity, while supporting and developing drivers. This latest launch followed on from the Middle East introduction in 2018 of two new Quester models designed for the heavy construction industry, the Quester 6x4R40 T and 8x4R- 46 T with hub reduction. Although 2019 was a challenging year for the Middle East truck market in general, UD Trucks witnessed a strong performance across many of its key markets,

MOURAD HEDNA President, UD Trucks Middle East.

says Hedna: “In the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar our sales either held steady or increased, bolstered by a number of major deals such as that with UAE-based waste management company Lavajet, who bought 118 Questers and Croners, and Oriental Trading Co in Qatar, which took delivery of a further 25 Questers and Croner models. “A key factor in our positive 2019 performance was the nature of UD Trucks’ fleet sales across the region. We signed major deals with some of the region’s leading companies. For example, a first-of-its-kind deal with Oryxmix in Dubai for 20 Quester 8x4 Mixers, and an unprecedented multimodel deal in Kuwait for 106 units for Kuwait Municipality. This agreement in Kuwait was just one of a number of major contracts in the waste management sector that we have sealed over the past three years, including in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as we have become a major player in this sector.” 2019 was very much a year of transition in Saudi Arabia. Following a mutual agreement to terminate a collaboration with Rolaco Group, Zahid Tractor was appointed as the exclusive importer and distributor of UD Trucks in KSA. As a result, the brand is committed to returning to growth in 2020 and working ever more closely with its existing customers, Hedna explains. “Across the region, we will continue to further support our business partners and customers to grow their businesses, with a focus on maximising their efficiency and profitability,” he adds.

“Customer satisfaction will continue to be a major focus for all of us in 2020. A key driver for our efforts in this field is what we call Quality Customer Pulse – this is a weekly meeting held at UD Trucks’ regional head office, bringing together the sales, aftersales and marketing teams to discuss customers issues and feedback. We will work to solve issues raised by the customer in order to keep their businesses running; listen to feedback from customers across all markets so as to come up with tailored solutions; and communicate best practice to all markets to optimise the use of our trucks. “In 2020, our primary focus will be to maximise our presence in Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with Zahid Tractor, while at the same time continuing to work closely with our existing regional partners to build UD Trucks’ presence across all other markets. We will also continue our planned expansion in East Africa, and in particular in Kenya, a market we reactivated in 2019 with a new product range and the launch of a new KD facility with our strong local importer, CMC Motors, part of the Al Futtaim group.” “We will continue our journey towards growth by reinforcing our market share and conquering new markets. Our focus has always been, and will always be, customer satisfaction, because this is the only guarantee of sustainable growth. We will continue to do this by engendering a strong spirit of collaboration with our partners, while simultaneously focusing on the most valuable human capital: our employees.”
