Tradition Innovation
After celebrating our 180th anniversary in 2021, ESMOD remains firmly focused on the future.
Founded in 1841, ESMOD is not only one of the world’s first fashion institutions of its kind, it also posesses the largest network of campuses around the world. The quality of student achievement in design, craftsmanship, technical skills, brand development and management has been recognized by the UGEI (Union of Independent Grandes Ecoles,) among others, which has welcomed ESMOD into its association of highly respected institutions.
At the heart of our programs, from fashion design to fashion business, from introductory levels to continuing education for professionals, is the fostering of creativity, essential for imagining the products that may best serve the needs and desires of 21st century consumers. ESMOD provides the technical skills to then transform these ideas into products. We are also dedicated to continuing the tradition of innovation at ESMOD, inspired by our founder Alexis Lavigne, pioneering Metawear courses for digital and 3D design, began in September 2022.
Recognition in both the academic and professional worlds allows ESMOD students to pursue joint degrees with such venerable institutions as the National Conservatory of Arts and Trades. Our students and professors are actively engaged in research into new approaches and technological innovations to the challenges of our era.
We are proud to pass on this treasured heritage of French craftsmanship and spirited originalty to students of all nationalities and cultures. ESMOD is training the professionals who will make tomorrow’s apparel and accessories, from affordable to luxury, while contributing effectively to the necessary evolution of our industry, that it may become both sustainable and inclusive. From daring entrepreneurs to members of creative teams, our graduates have what it takes to write the coming chapters of fashion history,
Whether students are to become “creatives”, designing and making clothing, product technicians, experts in creative marketing, distribution, branding, communications ,or a combination of the above, our professors are here to guide ESMOD students through their chosen career paths, instilling in them our passion for excellence.
Welcome to ESMOD!

Fashion Design Testimonials
Leathergoods Artisan HERMES
The professors know how to guide us as we develop our ideas while still respecting our creative universe. They also know how to take us out of our comfort zone enabling us to create unique and innovative collections.
Digital ProjectContentManager BALENCIAGA
The pace of the work and the professors' demands effectively prepare us for work in a professional environment.
The vast richness of the ESMOD textile library and curicu- lum allowed me to join the VERSACE Material Research teams in Milan for an internship. This was a very useful experience for my work as a fashion designer.
One of ESMOD's strengths is being able to set up exchanges with various schools in its network. I started my Fashion Designer course at ESMOD Beijing and finished it at ESMOD Paris, without sacrificing an ounce ofquality in my education.
Fashion Business Testimonials
ESMOD gave me the opportunity to meet new people and be more organized. We really learned to work in a group and this is really important.
I was looking for a school that highlighted the bu- siness & marketing side of fashion... These 3 years have taught me about creativity, fashion culture and all the strategic notions of marketing, communica- tions and digital tools, etc.
During this experience, I was able to analyse how the luxury industry works in depth. ESMOD has truly changed my career and given me incredible opportunities (...) to work for luxury brands like Lanvin, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, and all because the school (...) taught me how to apply and prepare for these roles. I'm delighted with the experience I had at ESMOD and grateful for everything the school has given me.
ESMOD helped me integrate easily into the professional world with mandatory internships every year.
Our Commitments
Caroline Bouquin, CSR Coordinator at ESMODOur network of schools is developing an ecosystem that combines technology, inclusivity, influence, design and biomimicry. Responsible choices that reflect the ethics of our group and its solid values are applied at all levels and expressed through a number of significant collaborations with renowned organisations: Convention des Entreprises pour le Climat (CEC) ; Paris Good Fashion ; Chair BALI (Biarritz Lifestyle Industry) ; Refashion, etc. Not only as a company and as a group of companies but also as a higher education institution, ESMOD places the utmost importance on social responsibility, on the one hand in order to lead by example and on the other to ensure that its students understand what companies now expect of them.
We wanted to build a world in which “digital” makes life easier. More enjoyable. Without any hassle. We're even building a new and completely digitalized world. (...) This will lead you to unimaginable professions. What will yours be, how will you live and breathe Fashion? Anything is possible. You who live in this digital world (...) because you are the future of this country. You are the future of Fashion. You are the future of this Fashion industry: A space for creation. A space for freedom. A space for equality. You are the future of this Fashion, one that respects the environment. This Fashion that knows no borders. I hope you create and live this strong, free, tolerant and digital Fashion.
We strongly believe that the amount of clothing being produced today is far greater than humanity's needs. We share the beauty and excitement that physical fashion creates, but we believe there are ways to produce less and produce more sustainably (...). With DRESS X, we aim to demonstrate that some clothes can only exist in their digital form. We proposed a business case to ESMOD Fashion Business students and were pleasantly surprised by their ability to work effectively in such a short space of time. They carried out in-depth and highly relevant market research on this new and unusual topic, NFTs. The quality of their ideas and especially the winning team impressed us with their fair, innovative and easy-to-implement strategic recommendations. We quickly decided to establish a lasting partnership with ESMOD with the introduction of the ESMOD x DRESS X certificate.
Paris Good Fashion is an association that aims to make Paris the capital of sustainable fashion by 2024, when it will host the Olympic Games. Established in 2019 at the request of Paris City Council, Paris Good Fashion brings together more than a hundred stakeholders (major groups, retailers, NGOs, federations, start-ups, etc.), all working towards a common goal: accelerate the sector's social and environmental transition.
ESMOD is working every day to improve and transform the industry's practices by participating in their think tank.

Craftsmanship since 1841
Craftsmanship has been ESMOD’s cornerstone since our founding by Alexis Lavigne, master tailor to the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III of the nineteenth century. He was the inventor of many patented tools still used in sewing, including the model's bust and the tape measure.
He published numerous texts, including his ground-breaking scientific method for pattern-making and cutting, which enabled the emergence of ready-to-wear manufacturing, having a democratizing effect on fashion and gave rise to ESMOD Editions. These published works evolved into regularly updated textbooks that remain the foundation of ESMOD teaching. Alexis Lavigne's investment in knowledge trasmission led him to open his first Lavigne cutting courses, ancestors of the ESMOD school, in 1841 where apprentice tailors came to train.
Cutting courses in the ESMOD INTERNATIONAL Group
In 1885, upon the death of Alexis Lavigne, his daughter, Alice Guerre, took over management of the school and opened it to a new public: young ladies.
As early as 1900, the Guerre-Lavigne school already sought to export its expertise internationally in order to enrich its methods through contact with other cultures and crafts.
The 1960s marked a turning point in ESMOD’s focus when the designing of clothes became pre-eminent, bringing to the forefront the role of designer. In 1976, the École Guerre-Lavigne took the name of ESMOD.
Always striving to meet the needs of an ever-evolving industry, when the marketing of fashion grew in importance in the late 1980s, ESMOD opened ISEM, the first business school dedicated to fashion. Now called ESMOD Fashion Business, it serves as a training ground for tomorrow’s specialists in sales, marketing, communications and management.
In 1984, the first ESMOD outside of Paris was founded by ESMOD alumnus Satoru Nino. Other forward-thinking fashion veterans followed suit, opening branches from Seoul to Dubai, and from Oslo to Beijing, creating by far the world’s largest group of fashion schools. While our shared curriculum allows students comparatively seamless study abroad experiences within the ESMOD network, we take pride in celebrating the diverse cultures of each of ESMOD’s 18 schools in 12 countries.
ESMOD Editions
Reference literature
During ESMOD’s nearly two centuries, ESMOD Editions has kept alive our founder’s methods and processes, while, inspired by his example, encouraging innovation.
ESMOD Editions showcases, thanks to the ingenuity of its processes, our ability to adapt to the evolution of fashion and culture. Continually revised publications present in French and English the most effective methods of pattern-making and design, as well as new material about fashion culture and the product environment.
A large part of ESMOD publications is now available in e-book versions with enhanced content. These form the corpus of methods used by students throughout their courses.
ESMOD Patrimoine
An exceptional collection
Over nearly two centuries, ESMOD has built up an invaluable archive that traces the development of the school as well as the major stages in the history of fashion from the 19th century to the present day.
From this collection of rare items including books written by Alexis Lavigne, prototypes, patents, photos, garments, and accessories that beautifully illustrate the evolution of style and manufacturing techniques throughout the ages, students access a vast source of information, learn to appreciate the work of designers, past and present, and are inspired.
ESMOD France on the Runway
Every year, ESMOD students present their collections in stunning runway shows before live audiences of friends and family, journalists, fashion industry leaders, and representatives of governments and respected institutions. Each year, 18 runway shows display nearly 800 student collections are judged by more than 600 professionals at ESMODs in France and around the world.
Throughout the year, ESMOD continually promotes student talent via fashion shows, contests, and exhibitions organized with our partners, providing greater visibility for our students’ work.
Bold Runway Trends
By Patrick Cabasset & Hervé DewintreThe richness of the end-of-year fashion shows held at ESMOD Paris, Lyon, Roubaix and Rennes really does allow for trends to be redefined, and given the creativity of the virtuoso silhouettes created by these freshly minted professionals, PlanetESMOD couldn’t resist attempting to try to convey some of the emotional force of these works, which span all of the specializations offered at ESMOD.
The communicative emotion that these fashion feats have triggered can be divided into two major families of distinct trends, one unexpected, cerebral, nostalgic, reflective and sometimes austere, offering an objective response to a time that is by no means always bright, the other counteracting this gloom with a joie de vivre that is both generous and contagious in equal measure.
Army Core
References to conflict with flair is what we see here; volume and protective padding, darkened, veiled and subdued colours, and rigid straps and braids armouring the body, and bag-like pockets to carry everything with you. This is ‘combat-ready’ streetwear for the (still) peaceful urban guerrilla.
Mutations
Gender fluidity and spectacular experimentation result in decidedly mutant fashion. This performance wardrobe draws on the richness of yesterday’s haute couture and the unique aesthetic of neo-manga fashion. By examining theatrical costumes, dramatic gestures, they convey a new form of expressionism, sometimes apocalyptic and selfaffirming, imparting universal messages.
Deconstruction
The deconstructivist trend for breakting things apart, changing and cutting everything up, is smashing the rulebook,as the unstructured becomes the very structure of the garment. The art of patchwork and creative destruction via laceration, patchwork, and topsy-turvy tailoring makes old clothes into something new. The refreshing, eco-inspired reflections behind these upcycled, experimental styles enlivens wardrobes with conceptual suits and more eco-conscious clothing.
Reconstruction
A new kind of formalism is shaking up traditional clothing structures, which are now being reconsidered, redesigned and restructured as part of a modern wardrobe representing a new avant-garde, an intellectual asceticism in which black and white, grey and denim blue often feature heavily. Geometric experimentation evokes cubism. Modesty and simplicity are no longer the enemy of style.
New Objectivity « Nouvelle Objectivité »
These trends are decidedly well-thought out and reflect a current situation that is rarely rosy. Emotion is suddenly born of reflection: precision becomes experimental and construction/deconstruction becomes a cerebral matter. This introspective, serious, sometimes austere movement reflects a time of doubt, a sometimes warlike age, a difficult day-to-day reality and an uncertain future in tribute to the German avant-garde of the immediate post-World War I period described in the exhibition "Nouvelle Objectivité" at the Centre Pompidou. Any objective resemblance to any aspects of our current daily lives is not entirely coincidental.
Katsuki Nakata Photographer : Jean-Baptiste PennelSwashbuckling Style
The fairy-tale romanticism of these silhouettes, comprising long, structured coats, wrap-around capes and draped tops, with dramatic, oversized effects and XXL volumes, brings a real sense of theatre to the world of fashion. These are clothes for showing off!

With a total of six campuses in France, two in greater Paris and four in the regional centers of Bordeaux, Roubaix, Rennes, and Lyon, ESMOD’s vibrant domestic and international network for professional training is unrivalled in the world of fashion education. Paris
The Fashion Capital
Thanks to its rich history, Paris is indisputably one of the world’s great fashion capitals, and well-known for much of what makes life worth living- art, literature, food, and romance! The greatest Parisian designers have had considerable influence on the city and the world. It is in this center of creative and economic effervescence that ESMOD Paris has been training fashion professionals for more than 180 years.
ESMOD Fashion Design
The first school in the ESMOD group, our “flagship”, in Paris’ 9th arrondissement, a magnificent private villa built in the Eiffel style around a multi-story central glassdomed atrium, transports all who enter into a space designed to inspire and enthrall.
Near the Palais Garnier Opéra, la Madeleine, vibrant Pigalle, Montmartre, and the shoppers’ mecca, Boulevard Haussmann, with its exquisite “grand magasins” department stores, Les Galeries Lafayette, and Le Printemps, the area around ESMOD Paris abounds with architectural gems.
At ESMOD, Fashion Design (“FD”) students find all they need to bring their wildest ideas to life: professional-quality sewing machines, the ESMOD boutique, which supplies design and pattern-making tools at low prices, a library of relevant documents and materials (managed by a former assistant to Christian Lacroix) provide a rich source of knowledge and inspiration. A conference room is also available to students, for “speed dating” with fashion professionals during recruiting sessions, and for a variety of events organized by ESMOD throughout the year.
Pantin
