Denton NAT,
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Gerard Hudspeth Mayor of Denton
Summer is just around the corner and, like most of you, my family is looking forward to the warmer weather and all that summer brings - trips to the water park, summer camp, and community events.
This summer, I invite you to join me and my family in exploring all that Denton Parks and Recreation has to offer. Visit Water Works Park and spend the day splashing in the wave pool or floating in the lazy river, at Quakertown Park enjoying some popcorn under the stars at Movie in the Park, adventuring off-road at the Hartlee Field Mountain Bike Trail, or just enjoying some time with family on a walk through one of our many parks or trails.
Whatever summer means for you, there are plenty of ways to PLAY in Denton!
Thank you for your continued support of Denton Parks. I look forward to seeing you out there this summer!

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT
MEET SEEMA GOKHARU
Seema has been an instructor a little over five years. She just started teaching for Denton Parks and Rec this past November, although she did teach at MLK in fall of 2018 and spring of 2019. Seema currently teaches BollyX (Dance Fitness workout) on Mondays at 6 p.m. & Yoga on Thursdays at 6 p.m. at Denia Rec.
She became an instructor because dancing and all forms of fitness are her passion, but to be able to share it with others brings her a lot more joy! Seema loves the connections she makes as an instructor with people from various backgrounds. She also gets to share a bit of her early childhood dance culture through BollyX, which is a unique dance format inspired by Bollywood-India, where she was born.

GRIT Freedom Chair
Parks and Rec is bringing hiking to everyone with the GRIT Freedom Chair. GRIT Freedom Chair is a self-propelled, all-terrain wheelchair that is navigable over dirt, rocks, mud, and hills. This wheelchair mountain bike mash up is helping more people explore our trails and experience the outdoors in a more natural way. The GRIT Freedom chair will be used in our adapted programs and made available upon request to participants of other Parks and Rec programs, such as trail hikes, outdoor camps, nature programs, and more. Please contact Mia Macy at Mia.Macy@cityofdenton.com for more information on the GRIT Freedom Chair and how to request program accommodations.

MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL
In November 2021, the City of Denton, Parks and Recreation, and the local biking community celebrated the official grand opening of the Hartlee Field Mountain Bike Trail in northeast Denton. The 5.3-mile-long single-track trail was built by a core group of volunteers along with assistance from staff. While the trail does not have significant topography, it is a course designed for speed with approximately 80 feet in elevation change throughout the course. The course was designed by Dr. Joseph Walker from the University of North Texas who provided significant support to Parks and Recreation during the layout and construction process.

Overall improvements of the walking trails, greenhouse, and gardens in the City would be impossible without Clay’s leadership.

Planning
While the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan was adopted in March 2022, significant efforts are underway to implement identified initiatives in the areas of land acquisition, park planning, and construction.
Briercliff Park and Pecan Creek Trail Master Plan
On Jan. 24, City Council adopted master plans for both Briercliff Park and Pecan Creek Trail. Briercliff Park enhancements will be focused on a future sprayground, restrooms, parking, trail loop, and various park amenities. The Pecan Creek Trail plan outlines an 8-mile, 10’ wide concrete trail that would connect to the DCTA Rail Trail and meander east to Lewisville Lake. This trail will connect to numerous parks and neighborhoods providing connectivity for residents to travel to downtown Denton for business, education, and fun!

PARK DEVELOPMENT
Aquatics Master Plan
Last fall, Parks and Recreation staff began gathering residents, aquatics users, and community partners (DISD, UNT, and TWU) to plan for the future. The purpose of the plan is to identify opportunities to outline and prioritize the capital needs for the community over the next 10 years. It is anticipated that this plan will be presented to City Council this spring.
Lilly Cantu Inclusive Playground Master Plan
This project aims to provide a universally designed, sensory-rich environment that enables children to develop physically, socially, and emotionally. The visioned play space will allow kids of all ages and abilities, regardless of physical, mental, sight, and hearing impairments, to play. The process includes the master planning, design, and construction drawings. This playground for all will include, but is not limited to, signage with potential donor element, perimeter fencing, natural elements, such as water, sand, and/or landscape, shade structure(s), site furnishings, and more. To date, no funding has been identified for construction.
Audra Oaks Park (1602 Audra Ln.)
A master plan for a new neighborhood park named Audra Oaks Park will start in the summer with community meetings. Efforts to create a neighborhood park started back in 2017. A partnership with a local development resulted in the acquisition of a 5.19-acre lot in 2021 for a neighborhood park. It is anticipated that the park will consist of a playground, trail, pond, and open space for play.
Paddling Trails
Last March, Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with communities around Lewisville Lake, submitted an application to create a 100-mile paddling trail around the perimeter of the lake for kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddleboard enthusiasts. Texas Parks and Wildlife toured the proposed trails and an official announcement of the largest paddling trail in the state is pending final approval from the State of Texas.
Lake Forest Park Dam Repair and Dredging Project
This project has been completed and the new trail is open for public use! As the trail was closed in 2019 with a breach of the dam, the project consisted of removing 45,000 tons of silt, reconstruction of the dam, enlargement of the spillway, and a new bridge. Parks and Recreation will be improving the trail from the bridge to the Good Samaritan Village in the near future.
ADA Improvements
As outlined in the ADA Transition Plan (2022), last fall, Parks and Recreation started to make improvements across the park system to assure City parks meet accessibility standards. A total of $300,000 was appropriated in the FY 2021-2022 budget for these efforts. As funding is available, it is planned that improvements will be completed annually as outlined in the ADA Transition Plan.

PARK DEVELOPMENT
Carl Young, Sr. Park
Originally opened in 2019, staff is currently working on plans to expand the existing sprayground, trail improvements, and fencing at Carl Young Park. Funding of $200,000 was approved in the 2014 bond program along with additional park development fee funds that were appropriated to help complete the project. Public meetings have already started, and construction is anticipated to begin this fall after the swim season concludes. Other improvements to the park over the last few years have consisted of a new playground, parking lot, restrooms, and trail lighting.
Joe Skiles Park
Enhancements to Joe Skiles Park is in the beginning stages of planning for improvements that would consist of a loop trail around the perimeter of the property, irrigation, installation of trees and turf, court fencing replacement, and benches. It is anticipated that this project would kick-off this spring and conclude in 2024.
Eagle Creek Park
In cooperation with Forestar Development, a new park and trail is being built north of Roselawn Drive. The 42-acre park was dedicated to the Parks and Recreation Department in 2022 and a .7-mile trail will be built later this year.
Denia Park
Outreach to the community has already started for improvements to Denia Park. Anticipated Park enhancements consist of the completion of a loop trail around the park, trail connection to the Eagle Creek neighborhood, irrigation, trees, field improvements, lighting on the soccer field, and ADA accessibility requirements. Funding for this project is supported from ARPA, Denton Parks Foundation, Brewer Foundation and park dedication fees. The project will begin this summer.
Quakertown Park Playground
Funding from the Denton Benefit League and the Denton Parks Foundation is helping to purchase musical play features that are being added to the existing playground in the park. These amenities help celebrate Denton’s musical heritage.
North Lakes Dog Park
The last shade pavilion was installed this winter thanks to funding provided from the Denton Parks Foundation. The Foundation, along with donors have provided the support for the construction of all the shade structures at the dog park. The last remaining step will be to add decorative stone on the pavilion poles to protect them and provide improved aesthetics. Additionally, trees were planted over the winter thanks to a $20,000 grant and volunteer power provided by Wells Fargo.
Denton Tennis Center
Construction continues with completion projected in the spring. The new tennis center has 12 tennis courts, 8 pickleball courts and a pro shop.
