Chairman’s Message

2020 marked the seventh anniversary of the New York Design Awards. We started this program to recognise leadership, excellence and courageous, design-lead projects in the commercial, government and community sectors. Each of the 2020 awarded projects took a different path in searching for the unmet needs of the stakeholders and users, but they are all undeniably made for people. The tumultuous nature of 2020 left the world scrambling to understand, adapt and respond to the ever-changing situation. ‘Normal’ was put on hold and we have had to universally strap in for an abnormal ride as we navigate through a new everyday. Market conditions entered a state of flux, and almost a year on that continues to be the case. In these moments of upheaval, it is the designers’ role to bring us to the future faster, and those that have shifted away from past concepts of normal, who have refactored their businesses to the current and future conditions and who remain adaptable, have provided

themselves with the greatest possible opportunities to thrive in this era of the New Possible. At DRIVENxDESIGN we too are evolving. 2020 was our 11th year of award programs, bringing a new focus for a new decade. Over the last eleven years we have pushed as hard as possible to build the world’s largest network of award programs - along the journey there has been a range of supporting tools and programs that have evolved. We are continuing to roll out more improvements to the DRIVENxDESIGN Portal to make it even easier for Award Managers to nominate and celebrate awarded projects and enhance the awards showcase. As of 2020, anything to do with the Award Programs stays under the DRIVENxDESIGN banner while everything else falls under the ‘Design Exec Club’ banner. The Award Programs are all about providing recognition for project teams, suppliers and those with the courage to sponsor.

New York Design Awards 2020

The Design Exec Club is about actionable strategic input for design focused executives. Our Supporter Program (p8) is designed to help suppliers and brands connect with the best of the best and gain invaluable connections with the emergent talent of our Elevate Program. The Design Exec Club is based on a dinner club I started in 2014 when touring through global design capitals. What began as an informal dinner conversation showed there was a glass ceiling for design conversations - it wasn’t punching through to the boardroom. Over the last 6 years, many of those dinner guests have been promoted to C-Suite positions and it proved high time to welcome in other C-Suite types to explore how design accelerates their organisational goals.

The members of the Design Exec Club are united by a common goal for a Better Future. It is all about how we can ensure the best possible future for our grandchildren’s grandchildren - yes, that’s right, five generations. Through both our DRIVENxDESIGN and Design Exec Club platforms we are proud to recognise the thought leadership that is going to create a thriving economy that is equitable and environmentally conscious. That is a Better Future, and we want to celebrate those with the courage, diversity and excellence to make it a reality. Again, congratulations, thank-you for being a part of our vision, and keep maintaining your courageous stance.

Nordstrom’s first flagship store in New York City primarily occupies a new building spanning 57th and 58th Streets and as well as several buildings existing buildings along Broadway in mid-town Manhattan. JCDA’s unique “Waveforms Façade” contributes a more generous volumetric experience of light within the site’s constrained public realm. The store’s lofted ceilings and entirely glass façade represent the department store’s desire to create a new kind of experience for shoppers. The waveform of the curtain wall serves performance objectives such as allowing for the oversize glass units to span the floor to floor plates without the need for vertical mullions, while the volumes allow for a program that merges civic and commercial goals.

Surrounded by unfinished building site, waste land and industrial sites, this 48-room hotel and restaurant complex in a small town is not blessed with a beautiful site. Fortunately, Taihang Mountain is visible from two major sides. Usually a hotel room would be designed as an outward box to maximize the view. We rejected the common model and reinvented the experience in a typical unit: a micro and private courtyard with a scroll-like view of the sky and the mountain, while the view below eye-level is blocked. The exterior image is also visually connected with the gables in local villages and the outline of the mountain.

Toky Terrace is a twin tower, transit-oriented development (TOD) project nestled in the central plot of Zhongshan city. This design seeks to capture the essence of the gradually developing city while also providing an iconic benchmark for the development of the city. The towers are combined at various floor levels to create vertical sky gardens that fit in beautifully with the context of the mountains to the southern side creating a deeper sub-conscious sense of belonging to the city. The staggered retreating steps of each floor on the lower levels of commercial podium enrich the user experience while the green terraces provide a break in monotony and encourages communal interactivity through the platforms.

Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Project Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation Creator Snohetta

Snohetta’s winning design for Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Competition is informed by the President’s personal reflections on the landscape, his commitment to environmental stewardship, and the periods of quiet introspection and civic engagement that marked his life. Snohetta’s winning design responds strongly to the brief set by the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation: THE PROJECT IS guided by three principles that embody the central values of T.R.’s life: Leadership, Citizenship, and Conservation. The challenge is to curate an experience that, by exploring the themes of T.R.’s legacy in these areas, influences participants on a personal level and invites them to contemplate what it means to be “Rooseveltian” in today’s world. The Library will need to wrestle with the complexity of T.R.’s public and private life, while still managing to impart a universally relatable and inspiring message to “dare greatly, think boldly, live passionately, and care deeply.”

As the northwest traffic hub of Chengdu, Pengzhou has noticeably developed its Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Park. More than 90 pharmaceutical enterprises have been attracted to the TCM Park of Pengzhou due to its plantation of herbs. The Museum of TCM proposed by MUDA-Architects, locates in southern area of Pengzhou where the only route leading to the urban area passes by and the TCM Park starts to spread. Due to its dominant location, the museum is required to be designed as a prominent symbol visually and spiritually in order to break the stereotype of expanding the industrial park and promote the industry development in an innovative way. TCM stresses the harmony and correspondence between human and nature. It believes that humanity is a component of the entire nature which is constituted by ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’ in dualism.

Bulky buildings blur not only the skyline but also the right of use, blocking human interaction. So here in an old industrial park area, where the surroundings are. messy, we leverage simple materials, odd and even numbers of criss-cross pillars to set up 6m or 9m height of floors, paying tribute to the discourse of common ground in La Biennale di Venezia in 2012. The Boulder House is a residential house for a client who puts privacy first in an area where securing privacy is difficult. To make this rarely-seen characteristic of the building stand out, the architect planned it to look like one gigantic boulder. The new office at 666 Third Avenue was conceptualized and planned by New York’s Design Republic to be evocative of Ovation’s brand, people, and culture; and to provide enjoyable and innovative spaces to conduct business and entertain their clients. For Design Republic, it was imperative that the success of any design be founded in Ovation’s identity, who they are today and who they will be going forward. When exploring what that identity is, one theme became clear: connections. It was natural to our design process that we follow and celebrate these connections Ovation makes every day, along with interpretations of what we all love about the experience of a journey. After extensive market research Trimble found that customers wanted complete, solution oriented 3D scanner systems. 3D laser scanners are hightech, versatile tools that are used in construction, surveying and forensics. Scanners deliver ‘point clouds’, consisting of millions of measurements, that are the basis for as-built documentation for buildings, civil infrastructure, industrial facilities, topographic surveys, cultural heritage and reconstruction of accident or crime scenes. 3D scanners are no longer measured on performance alone. Data quality is important but fast delivery of verified results in the field is the key to profitability. Customers need systems that eliminate the guesswork and complexity of scanning, offering automatic registration (linking scans together) in the field. With traditional scanning, results are not known until the entire project is registered back in the office. New York Design Awards 2020

PepsiCo two-liter bottle Project Commissioner/Creator PepsiCo

First designed in 1970 by PepsiCo and improved into the 1990s, the two-liter bottle is getting another makeover.

The new bottle was redesigned to make it easier for soda drinkers to use. PepsiCo believes consumers will get used to—and then expect—an easier pouring experience from big bottles. To determine the size of the new bottle, PepsiCo checked out hand size: The average hand measures between 7 and 8.6 inches, according to PepsiCo’s research. The new bottle is “more manageable” to grip because it has a 10.4-inch circumference, compared to 13.4 inches for the old 2-liter bottle.

The Water Box Program Project Commissioner/Creator 501CTHREE Team Jaden Smith, Co Founder Drew FitzGerald, Co Founder and Executive Director Jaron Rothkop, Director of Operations Amy Keller, Director of Fundraising Renee Samms, Director of Community

New York Design Awards 2020

The Water Box was designed in response to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. In 2014 the municipal water system was contaminated with lead and Flint’s residents were forced to rely on donations of bottled water for drinking, cooking and hygiene. Bringing in and distributing millions of bottles of water became a heavy burden for the city and community organizations. By 2019 most of the country had forgotten about Flint and donations of water began to dry up. 501CTHREE partnered with First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church to develop an alternative way for the church and other community organizations to get water to Flint’s residents - one without the high cost, heavy logistics, and plastic waste of relying on single-use water bottles.

BeauEr 3X travel trailer Project Commissioner/Creator BeauEr

The BeauEr 3X concept was born with a simple idea of its inventor : a small but expandable caravan that has everything like a big one : easy to tow on the road and quick to unfold with all the comforts of a large caravan. Designed and manufactured in France, the expandable camper triples in size in just 60 seconds. The accordion-like trailer starts at 43 square feet—as compact as a car. And then sliding on telescopic modules, the nesting layers expand to a 129-squarefoot living space. The French camper is inspired by the small, curvy retro caravans of the 1960s, like the Bourreau Sologne, Georges et Jacques, Baillou, and Escargot. The rounded shape also draws design inspiration from sixties automobiles like the Mini Cooper and the Fiat 500.

Many brands embrace the new year by commemorating the upcoming zodiac sign with tailormade solutions that resonate with consumers and generate desirability. The 2020 Pepsi China Chinese New Year Limited Edition Cans celebrate the spirit of the Year of the Rat, a symbol of wealth and surplus.

New York Design Awards 2020

As Covid-19 made digital product design more essential, better design processes and practices became that much more important. Freehand, InVision’s virtual whiteboard, is a core component of the InVision platform and is the tool that allows collaborators from every area of the business to join together, enabling fluid visual collaboration across team members throughout the design process. This year, we’ve made all of this easier and more engaging than ever, with new sticky notes, version history, emoji reactions, easy voting tools, exporting capabilities, shape locking, and popular templates like brainstorming and wireframing, all within the ecosystem of the entire InVision platform. Together these features create a complete visual communications experience, which is often more powerful, pleasant, and rewarding than a verbal or typed exchange. Freehand, preferred by some of the most prolific product teams, stands apart from its competitors because of its simplicity and how it feels like an inclusive space. 203

InVision’s Design System Manager Project Commissioner/Creator InVision

206

InVision’s innovations in 2020 were all about empowering teams to create amazing, companysaving and strategy-shifting products that consumers would love—and produce them at scale to meet market demand. InVision’s innovations in products, processes, and know-how drive toward that aim. This year, thousands of organizations came to InVision looking to increase and scale their design capabilities, and we responded with strategic updates targeted at their needs. Companies need to make digital product design more efficient and cohesive across touchpoints. Our new Design System Manager (DSM), launched in August, allows teams to easily leverage reusable components and not reinvent the wheel. At the most essential level it’s an accelerant of digital product development, and its adoption and use allows both large and small companies to expand digital workflow and brand consistency.

DIGITAL - DEV PLATFORM/DEV TOOLS/FRAMEWORK

InVision Project Commissioner/Creator InVision

Covid-19 put companies and their digital product design teams in a crisis, as digital products went from a high-ROI but ancillary revenue to many companies’ lifeline. According to McKinsey, adoption of digital products doubled in the grocery industry, increased by 60% in the entertainment industry, and increased by 40% in the banking industry. Retailers from Home Depot to Dominos saved their revenue streams—and their employees—by making their digital products central. They needed to achieve digital transformation at scale and on a vastly compressed timeframe in order to survive. This combination of factors put unprecedented pressure on design teams. They were suddenly responsible for more than ever before. They needed to design faster and at scale. Whole teams of people needed to be involved concurrently.

IBM Eclipse Codewind Project Commissioner/Creator IBM Team Kim Holmes, Michelle Wang, Guy Loret de Mola, Rachel Chen

Eclipse Codewind is an open source project that makes it easier for developers to create cloud-native applications within their favorite integrated developer environment (IDE). Why is this important? Building and developing a cloud native, containerized applications is incredibly complex for developers, preventing them from doing the one thing they really want to do - code. Without Codewind, a cloud app developer needs to create their own application stack for a containerized microservice that also fits their preferred language. Additionally, containerized development exposes more infrastructure requirements and infrastructure knowledge than the developer needs to have. Ultimately, a developer spends an enormous amount of time setting up their development environment before actually beginning to code.
