SSIP OFFERS A LEATHER PEF ASSESSMENT A new service is available that measures the environmental footprint of tanning products In line with its commitment to sustainability, the Italian Leather Research Institute (SSIP) has launched a new interesting service, namely the “PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) Assessment of Leather Products”. This is a service that derives directly from the ‘FAIBENELAPELLE’ Research and Development programme conducted in the last two years by SSIP, in which a tool was developed and tested in the tannery that allows to obtain an assessment of the environmental sustainability of the product, which has its strong point is compliance with international and EU standards and the requirements of the Made Green in Italy brand and has been designed to reduce the costs and complexity of PEF sector studies. “The PEF Tanning Products Assessment allows SSIP to accompany companies in defining the environmental profile of the products, in identifying environmental improvements optimised with respect to the cost/benefit ratio and finally, if required, in correct and robust communication, in order to allow tanneries to scientifically demonstrate to their customers the advantages of the products in terms of environmental footprints, thus managing to differentiate and increase their competitiveness”, explains SSIP. The service also allows for validation of innovation in terms of sustainability, which can also be used in the context of interventions funded at European, national or regional level. How does it work? “The service is provided after a free preliminary visit to the company requesting it, aimed at providing all the information and purposes of a PEF study, defining which articles to apply the study to and finally, carrying out an initial analysis of risks and benefits based on the general process layout of the Certifications already held by the company”. Subsequently, the company is involved to define the final process layout, which will allow to adequately prepare the processing software, to detect the inventory data (input and output) to be used for the calculations and the subsequent final evaluation. The Italian Leather Research Institute work team is made up of technologists and researchers who participated in the FAIBENELAPELLE programme. In the event that the possibility of being able to communicate results in a manner consistent with current international standards (B2B, B2C) is also requested, the offer includes the involvement of a third party validation body. Moreover, since one of the goals of a product PEF Assessment is to have, on the part of the company, a valid starting point to be able to orient its choices towards eco-innovation, it is also possible to obtain an Improvement Report, based on what has already been found in the PEF phase, which explains the possible intervention areas in the operating site studied, to obtain more environmentally-friendly products to be offered on the market. LA SSIP OFFRE LA VALUTAZIONE PEF DELLE PELLI E’ disponibile un nuovo servizio che misura l’impronta ambientale dei prodotti conciari In linea con il suo impegno sul fronte della sostenibilità, la Stazione Sperimentale per l’Industria delle Pelli e delle Materie concianti (SSIP) ha lanciato un nuovo interessante servizio, ovvero la “Valutazione PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) di Prodotti conciari”. Si tratta di un servizio che deriva direttamente dal programma di Ricerca e Sviluppo ‘FAIBENELAPELLE’ condotto nell’ultimo biennio dalla SSIP, nel quale è stato sviluppato e testato in conceria uno strumento che consente di ottenere una valutazione della sostenibilità ambientale di prodotto, che ha come punto di forza il rispetto degli standard internazionali e comunitari e di quanto richiesto dal marchio Made Green in Italy ed è stato ideato per ridurre i costi e la complessità degli studi PEF di settore. “Il servizio di Valutazione PEF di Prodotti conciari è in grado di fornire alle imprese la definizione del profilo ambientale dei prodotti, l’identificazione dei miglioramenti ambientali ottimizzati rispetto al rapporto costi/benefici e infine, se richiesto, offre supporto per una corretta comunicazione, in modo da consentire alle concerie di dimostrare in modo scientifico ai propri clienti i vantaggi dei prodotti in termini di impronte ambientali, riuscendo così a differenziare ed aumentare la propria competitività” spiegano da SSIP. Il servizio permette anche di avere una validazione dell’innovazione in tema di sostenibilità, che può essere utilizzata anche in ambito di interventi finanziati a livello europeo, nazionale o regionale. Come funziona? “Il servizio viene reso dopo una visita preliminare gratuita presso l’impresa che ne fa richiesta, mirata a fornire tutte le informazioni e le finalità di uno studio PEF, a definire su quali articoli applicare lo studio ed infine, ad effettuare una prima analisi di rischi e benefici sulla base del layout di massima di processo delle Certificazioni già in possesso dell’azienda”. Successivamente, l’impresa viene coinvolta per la definizione del layout definitivo di processo, che consentirà di predisporre adeguatamente il software di elaborazione, per rilevare i dati di inventario (input ed output) da utilizzare per i calcoli e la successiva valutazione finale. Il team di lavoro della Stazione Sperimentale è costituito dai tecnologici e ricercatori che hanno partecipato al programma FAIBENELAPELLE. Nel caso in cui venga richiesta anche la possibilità di poter comunicare i risultati in maniera coerente con gli standard internazionali vigenti (B2B, B2C), nell’offerta è incluso, nell’eventualità, il coinvolgimento di un Ente di validazione terzo. Inoltre, poiché uno degli obiettivi di una Valutazione PEF di prodotto è quello di avere, da parte dell’impresa, un punto di partenza valido per poter orientare le proprie scelte verso l’eco-innovazione, è anche possibile ottenere una Relazione di Miglioramento, basata su quanto già rilevato in sede di PEF, dove sono esplicate i possibili ambiti di intervento nel sito operativo studiato, per ottenere prodotti più sostenibili sotto il profilo ambientale da proporre sul mercato.
