“After the most romantic proposal on the sunlit Hudson River promenade, I can definitely say dreams do come true in New York. We quickly began wedding planning and it was love at first sight when we found our venue, Fasque Castle! It truly fit our vision of something grand and traditionally Scottish; somewhere our nearest and dearest could come together for a weekend of celebrating our love. While we did postpone twice and left behind our dream summer nuptials, we couldn’t have been happier when we finally tied the knot on 16 October 2021. Date changes meant we sadly lost many of our original suppliers but thankfully we got to keep our fantastic band and, of course, the castle! As the venue was so beautiful, emphasising this was important to me and my wedding planner. Pinterest was a huge help and the key words for my vision were: ‘warm’, ‘magical’ and ‘like something out of a fairytale’. We went for exquisite details, like champagne silk table linen, gold cutlery and our own customised scent, and we used our fairytale castle on all the stationery. There was a plethora of flora, with beautiful flower displays and a gorgeous arch. I was over the moon with how it all came together. Despite having modelled wedding dresses for more than a decade (I was on the Your Wedding Exhibition catwalk for 10 years and also featured on these very pages in a wedding dress!) I felt like a queen during the dress shopping experience and finding ‘The One’ was a total wow moment. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

It became even more exciting when we added the Spanish-style lace veil and the dazzling tiara. Jimmy Choo shoes gifted from Ben were the perfect finishing touch for walking the most important catwalk of my life… Down the aisle! The wedding weekend began with a casual dinner on the Friday – perfect for our guests to get to know one another. In the morning, special moments were shared in the powder room getting ready and later, during the church ceremony, even more heartfelt moments were felt. We had emotional readings and meaningful music. It was truly something we’ll remember forever. After drinks in the sun, we moved on to dinner and speeches. And, as we sat and looked at our guests with music in the background, we had a real ‘we made it’ moment. After four years and two postponements, we’d planned to perfection and realised the stress was all worth it. Like something out of a story, our special day was truly magical.” ♥

PLANNING

9

You’ve said: “Yes!” and here’s our congratulations gift to you… A list of ten things for before you say: “I do!” 1. Investigate wedding planners: Organisational guru or persistent procrastinator? If you’re the latter, a wedding planner should certainly be on your list but even for the former, these knowledgeable, well-connected experts are worth a look in for advice, contacts and even negotiating discounts! 2. Sort your budget: An absolute must before you do literally anything else – take stock of your financials. There’s nothing worse than setting your heart on a caterer/photographer/florist you can’t afford! Consider what you have already, who all might be chipping in and when it might be best to tie the knot – would a date further in the future give you a chance to save for that dream venue?

PLANNING

Handy Cut-out Planning Guide 12 months (or more): Decide date, budget & guest list Decide & book ceremony/celebrant Choose & book venue Get wedding insurance

9-12 months Send out Save the Date cards Choose bridesmaids, best man, ushers Book photographer & videographer Book caterers & decide menu Organise transport Book DJ/band Start looking at wedding dresses

6-9 months Shop for & order wedding dress Buy shoes, underwear, accessories Book hair & make-up Choose & book florist/cake Book extra entertainment Order/make wedding favours

3-6 months: Buy wedding rings Groomswear & bridesmaids dresses Book wedding night accommodation Book honeymoon Agree order of service, readings & hymns with vicar/registrar Write vows Set up gift list

0-3 months: Send out invitations Have dress fittings & wear in shoes Buy gifts for bridal party Write speeches and thank yous Have a hair & make-up trial

Final week: Confirm numbers with venue & caterers Confirm all timings with suppliers Brief bridesmaids, ushers & best man Pay final balances Collect groomswear & wedding dress Have a manicure & pedicure♥ Get some beauty sleep! ♥

3. Discover inspo: From perusing Pinterest to binging on bridal mags to getting the low-down at local wedding exhibitions (Your Wedding Exhibition is just around the corner!) soak it all up so you can start building an idea of what your special day might look like. 4. Take out insurance: It’s boring, it’s practical but it’s incredibly important – the pandemic has shown exactly that! Make sure you’re covered for all eventualities (your insurance supplier will keep you right), and we’ll cross our fingers that you never need to cash it in. 5. Order stationery: Picked a venue? Set the date? Then tell your guests! With more weddings than ever scheduled for the year ahead (apparently 2.5 million, which is the most since 1984!) you’ll want to make sure your nuptials get into their diaries pronto. The northeast has an incredible selection of talented stationers who’ll kit you out with everything from Save The Dates to thank you notes, all on point with your couple style.

Get your bride/groom squad on board to help tick some boxes, check-in with your partner regularly for non-wedding-related quality time and absolutely schedule some TLC for yourself! 6. Decide on gifts: Part of Gen Z? Apparently, you and your millennial pals are coming out of the pandemic more financially stable than your parents and with an urge to rethink traditions – you’re all about honeymoon funds and charity registries. You can absolutely stick with tradition, though! If you’re setting up your first home together, a gift list is a smart way to furnish your space with things you love from people you love. Have your list at an independent boutique for extra ‘shop local’ points! 7. Consider favours: Favoured by some and not by others, tradition dictates that you give those attending your wedding a little something to remember the celebration by. Choose something that tells your love story, has meaning or makes a memorable experience. You’ll find loads of ideas on Pinterest or, if you’d like to chat it through, see what your stationer recommends.

PLANNING

8. Get your dancing shoes on: After a few years off the tiles, you could be forgiven for being a little rusty. Thankfully, local dance schools have choreographers on hand to give you a refresh or, if you’re feeling ambitious, pull together an extravagant routine for you to wow your guests with. Strictly 2022, here we come! 9. Be patient: Our wonderful local wedding suppliers are the best, but they’re also busy, especially at the moment. Be mindful that just because responses aren’t always instant, it doesn’t mean you’re not on their mind. www.byrhea.co.uk

10. Relax and enjoy! The wedding planning process can be tough at times so part of your job here is to make sure it doesn’t get on top of you. Get your bride/groom squad on board to help tick some boxes, check-in with your partner regularly for non-weddingrelated quality time and absolutely schedule some TLC for yourself! ♥

Getting that pamper Wedding planning making you stressed? Well, how about a good self-care sesh? Don’t want the celebration to end? Or need a change of scenery? Let the planner(s) know and make your hen or stag a weekend to remember with a trip with your faves. Various veils Just as there are endless styles of outfits for your nuptials, your choices in veils are equally big. But first – do you definitely want a veil? Traditionally worn by a bride to protect her from evil spirts stealing her happiness and staining her purity, today’s veils are a powerful accessory to enhance the bridal look. Regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs, a beautiful veil can give your look a divine and classic feel.

Blush B R I DA L

From captivating cathedral-length to bold blusher style, veils come in all sorts of designs. Love lace but not on your dress? A Spanishstyle mantilla veil is the perfect alternative or for added drama, a completely solid lacey one. If you’re all about glitz and glam, go for jewelled details, glitter threading and a tiara to top the look off.

Extraordinary embellishments Everything essential sorted for your bridal look but still feel like something’s missing? Tiaras, as mentioned above, can be a spectacular centrepiece if you want to royally roll up to the altar whilst a little charm can be added by hiring a local sewing service to add embroidery or pearls. A snowy wedding might be like something out of a Christmas movie but winter wonderland can also be cold. Prepare for the Scottish weather while adding a fashionable piece or two – a pair of gloves will keep your paws warm and add some vintage elegance whilst a chic cape will take you back to Old Hollywood glamour. Go for a (faux) fur jacket or shawl and watch your inner Audrey, Marilyn or Grace appear!

Not-so-unmentionables Especially important if you’re rocking a strapless gown or something tight-fitting, putting thought into your wedding lingerie is a must. There are lots of great products on the market to help solve all your bridal couture complications – and local experts to guide you through them.

Check out nude coloured non-VPL briefs, supportive shapewear and multiway bras but it’s not all about the practicalities – there are parts of your underwear where you can have a bit more fun! Garters, for example, can be customised and embroidered, and if you choose blue thread, you’ve got your ‘something blue’ covered! Another fun extra is matching silky robes for you and your ‘I do crew’. Great props for some candid photos of you all getting ready in the morning, they’re also a cute keepsake from your special day.

A few more tips and tricks • While you might want to wear your full glam to go your dress shopping, makeup and fake tan can easily stain dresses. Please be mindful. • Heels are amazing and add some height to your frame but make sure you feel comfortable walking in your shoes and that they aren’t unbearably high for you. • Another sole-related issue… blisters. We all have those shoes that just always hurt, so make sure they’re not invited to your wedding. Try out the prosects and make sure your final footwear choice is worn in properly before your big day. • To keep your special outfit prim and proper after the wedding, you’ll want to give it the best conditions to be preserved. Talk to your bridal boutique or seamstress and they’ll tell you how to take care of your own little piece of fashion history. ♥

With lots of DIY details, this summer wedding had everything from a magical horse-drawn carriage to a dress designed and made by the bride herself. As she shares her and Brendan’s story, we can’t get enough of Emma’s traditionally Scottish dream day! “We met 10 years ago as two freshers here in Aberdeen. After dancing away in a nightclub we stuck together and, after Brendan’s proposal at the top of Sissinghurst Castle in Kent, we began wedding planning. We prioritised booking the venue and after viewing Maryculter House Hotel, we were sold! A beautiful hotel with a stunning setting on the River Dee, we loved it from the start and just knew it was the place for us. Knowing 2021 would be a busy time for weddings, we were keen on securing our suppliers sooner rather than later. We decided on a summer wedding and the date was 9 July 2021.

The uncertainty of the pandemic was stressful. Reducing our original guest list to cater to restrictions was especially tricky, but we knew our day would still be perfect, regardless of size.

When our special day eventually came, putting on my self-made dress was an amazing feeling. Although I’m an embroidery designer, it was still nerveracking designing the outfit. Thankfully, lockdown ensured there was lots of time to work on it!

It was a classic style, complete with embroidery and Swarovski crystals. Being a fan of sparkle, a tiara was added, and my jewellery and shoes reflected this, too! We had a beautiful ceremony in the breathtaking St. Mary’s Church at Blairs (after I arrived in a horse and carriage, keeping a wonderful family tradition alive)! Growing up as Catholics, we loved the idea of a church wedding and welcoming our guests to the tune of bagpipes gave it a stunning Scottish touch. Later, we had an amazing meal and sharing it with our nearest and dearest made it even better. We had a DJ playing all our favourite songs and, since we

couldn’t have a first dance, we showed a slideshow of childhood photos… A very intimate and touching point of the night! After loving every single minute of our happy day, it’s hard to pinpoint a highlight. You may be heading off into married life without them but having been with you on the journey to your big day, your bridesmaids/men deserve to look amazing too! Matching outfits, complementary colours or similar styles? The choices are many so here are some tips to start you and your 'I Do crew' off! The biggie…

www.daniellelesliephotography.com

Budget! How will their outfits be paid for? Is each friend going to splash out or are you buying the goods? Whatever you decide, make sure it’s clear from the outset – and that the chosen garments fit the budget. No-one wants to fall in love with something and not bring it home!

Comfort is key

www.byrhea.co.uk

One size doesn’t fit all, and neither do styles or cuts as you’ll know from finding your own wedding outfit. It’s all about representing each body in the best way so have an open mind if a bridesmaid/man isn’t so sure about a design you love. Is there a compromise to be had there somewhere? We think so!

Make a day of it! Outfit shopping isn’t just an opportunity to get your favourites together, it’s a great chance to plan the rest of their wedding day look. Postshopping, celebrate with a glass of something sparkly and talk through hair, beauty and accessories. Just like you, there’ll be much more than just a gown or suit needed to get them picture perfect! ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

Show up Mums in Style Carrie Symonds made the headlines when she tied the knot to Boris in a hired wedding dress. Coming in at almost £3,000 full price, she rented her ivory tulle and silk gown for just £45! Now, the dress hire revolution is big news, especially for guests…

Giving you the opportunity to afford designers you wouldn’t usually be able to purchase at a fraction of the price, it’s no surprise that the global online clothing rental market is starting to surge. And get this – it’s expected to grow by nearly £700 million over the next four years! It’s not all ultra-high end, though. Retail giant Marks & Spencer has jumped on the bandwagon, offering up sophisticated pieces from its M&S X Ghost collection for four, 10 or 30 days via fashion rental platform Hirestreet. Perfect if your guests need a quick but stylish fix for one of the many weddings they’ll inevitably be attending in 2022.

MUMS' OUTFITS AND OCCASIONWEAR

That said, shopping local is so important right now, so remind your friends and family to check out the nearby offering wherever in the world they are. Here in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, you’ll find dresses for hire for all manner of events and even some specifically for those with a bun in the oven. So handy, as most of us would have little use for maternity occasionwear after the little one makes an appearance. Want something you can hold on to for the whole wedding season? Totally possible whilst still being sustainable – simply investigate the northeast’s preloved retailers and you’ll be sure to find a gem or two! Outfit sorted? Now it’s time for your guests to think about accessories – hats (which have been a rental option for a long time), bags and shoes. Here’s what’s set to be bang on trend for 2022: • Hats and hair accessories will be OTT this year! Team vibrant colours with sequins and feathers for a fun, stylish look. • You can’t go wrong with a nude or navy shoe for a wedding but, as with headgear, being a little extra is so in. Go bold with red, hot pink or cobalt blue, or add glamour with metallic shoes. • Quite literally handbags, the teenyweeny clutch has made a comeback, calling for us to take along only what we need – and sturdy handles, flaps and zips will keep everything safe and secure! For extra fashion points, pick one with elegant beading, sparkly diamantes or funky studs.

P.S. Newsflash: Black is an option! It seems times have changed and if the stats from recent online searches are anything to go by, it’s much more acceptable to wear black to a wedding now. Hurrah! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

GROOMSWEAR

47

Introducing Groomswear The Kilt Outfit Favoured by many a Scottish groom, traditional kilt outfits come with far more than just the tartan centrepiece. First up, you’ll put on your shirt and the kilt itself with a belt and kilt pin, before you add your tie, a waistcoat, a jacket and your choice of sporran. Lastly, it’s time for your socks, followed by the flashes, the sgian dubh and the brogues. All sound a bit like gibberish? Don’t worry, we’re here to help! And beyond this article, there are a whole host of talented and trusted local suppliers who’ll keep you right, whether it’s a kilt purchase, kilt hire or an entirely different wedding day outfit you’re after! For now, though, let’s get back to uncovering a few of the key accessories that help to make up an authentic kilt outfit…. (P.S. Some are optional – your supplier will be able to advise).

Shirt Whether you go for a standard wing collar shirt (looks dashing with a bow tie), a ghillie (a loosefitting shirt with leather lace that can be tied or left hanging) or a Victorian collar (ultra-formal; great paired with a ruched tie), remember to keep it tucked into your kilt.

Kilt According to the Scottish Tartans Authority, the ultimate in luxury and romance for your wedding is to have your own tartan designed and woven… But if time and budget won’t allow, there are thousands to choose from, whether you represent your family, fly the flag for your fave sports team or simply go for a pattern you love the colour and style of.

Belt www.daniellelesliephotography.com

A leather belt isn’t just practical (no-one wants their kilt falling down!), its decorative buckle gives you a chance to personalise your outfit further.

Kilt pin This small, decorative pin is there to add a little weight, preventing your kilt from flapping open. Go for something that complements your belt buckle.

Tie

www.danirosephotography.com

Ghillie shirt? No tie needed! If you’ve gone for a standard wing collar shirt, you’ll find it’s usually paired with a bow tie when it comes to the kilt outfit, but if you’re having a more informal wedding day, try a straight neck tie. Victorian collar shirts, due to their more formal nature, are usually combined with a bow tie or a ruched tie. Going a bit different? Choose a cravat.

Waistcoat and jacket You’ll want a three- or five-button waistcoat, paired with some form of jacket – especially if you’re saying: “I do” in the cooler months. Go traditional with the Prince Charlie jacket or modern with a tweed number that compliments your kilt colours. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

GROOMSWEAR

Sporran A word from Gaelic descent, this comes from ‘spleuchan’, which means ‘purse’. And, as kilts don’t have pockets, sporrans are a must. Somewhere to keep your all essentials (money, keys and hipflask!), sporrans are made from leather or animal hide and come in a huge variety of styles. In fact, they can often be pivotal in defining your overall look. From simple, classic options to elaborate, colourful creations, your sporran can set you apart from the rest of your groom squad and give you a chance to show off your personality.

www.byrhea.co.uk

Socks You’ll need a pair of knee-length woollen socks – ideal for keeping you cosy if you’re going for the ‘true Scotsman’ vibe and choosing not to wear anything underneath your kilt! These can be a single colour (often black or cream), or a plaid pattern.

Flashes

www.danirosephotography.com

Worn to the side of the calf, your flashes will stop your socks falling down… Handy! Not just practical, they provide an opportunity to add some extra colour to your groom look. Try a tartan that matches your kilt or a complementary solid colour – whatever works for you.

Sgian Dubh Another Gaelic phrase, sgian dubh means ‘black knife’ and it’s traditionally tucked inside one of your socks. It’s a small knife, usually with a decorative bone handle and a leather sheath.

www.danirosephotography.com

Brogues Made from sturdy leather, these are a little different from your usual set of smart shoes as they’re traditionally designed without a tongue. Instead, they have long laces that are tied up around the calves. It’s likely these evolved from early Highlander footwear, which consisted simply of leather or hide wrapped around the feet and secured in place with leather thongs.♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

There can be a lot to think about here so take note of our top tips for a stress-free shopping experience. Then sit back and let the northeast’s ever-wonderful jewellery experts do the rest...

Getting started Like pretty much everything else associated with wedding planning, start in plenty of time. Don’t head out to the shops just yet, though. And remember, as a forever purchase this may well be worth a bit of investment. www.danirosephotography.com

Get the size right First up, the practical bit – get your ring size measured by the in-store professional. A lovely quick win!

Picking a partner for the engagement ring www.byrhea.co.uk

Next, for those of you with an engagement ring, it’s important to plan your wedding band around it so that they sit beautifully together. Jewellery experts will be able to provide plenty of advice on this (recommending ‘shaped rings’ over ‘court-shaped rings’) and although it will narrow down your choices to some extent, this can often be a good thing!

Fall in love with a style www.byrhea.co.uk

You and your ring will have many happy years together so you’re going to want something you’ll cherish forever. Start by having a look around and a try on or tell the jeweller about your personal style (Are you modern or traditional? Do you like a splash of colour? Something a bit different?) to see what they suggest.

They’ll probably discuss the following with you: • The precious metal you’d like: Platinum is a natural, bright white metal and will never tarnish or fade whilst white gold is coated with rhodium to get its lustre. Alternatively, yellow gold is rather rare and gives a gorgeous warm glow, and rose gold is a stylish favourite of the romantics out there. Sensitive when wearing jewellery? Head straight for the selection of titanium rings. This metal is hypoallergenic, has a slightly dark grey tone and a comfortable, lightweight feel. • The style you’d like: As mentioned above, this is a very personal decision and options range from classic plain bands to showstopping dazzlers, and everything in between. Gents, you’ll be looking at an array of widths, styles and finishes when it comes to your wedding band and ladies, you’ll be getting to grips with terms like ‘vintage’, ‘sparkle edge’ and ‘diamond twist’.

HAIR & BEAUTY

Hair Beautifully & Beauty bridal There are lots of exciting and relaxing things to prepare in the lead-up to your wedding day. Feeling beautiful when you’re making your way down the aisle is a big part of the experience, so here are some tips to get you going and glowing!

Whether you’re wearing a sparkly tiara, rocking your natural style or sporting a sophisticated updo, your hair will be a big part of your bridal look. So, get those luscious locks ready for what’s coming by chatting with your hairstylist in good time before your special day. Helping you prepare and recommending products, they'll defo teach you some tricks to make sure you have the best hair day! Top tip: When planning your ‘do, don’t make any drastic changes, like an extreme cut or colour, unless you’re 100% sure it’ll be the right look for exchanging those vows! Blushing bride or smokey-eyed goddess? The choice is yours when it comes to your makeup. A good rule of thumb, though, is to try out the potential look beforehand so you know what you like and don’t like.

Booking one of the amazing local MUAs or going to be your own artist? Either way, explore some ideas online and use the current bridal makeup trends for some inspiration. This season, softly-defined eyes paired with a bold lip are on every bride’s wishlist and we can guess why – mask requirements have made rocking a daring lipstick pretty impossible! So, take advantage of the fact that vibrant styles are back with a bang. That said, it’s not for everyone and if you want a more natural look while still feeling glam, go for the classic nude lip. Just add a glowy base and sparkly eyes for a truly stunning look!

www.jonathanaddie.com

Nailing that bridal vibe (no pun intended, honest!) usually involves a manicure, perfect for those closeup shots of the rings! Head to your appointment armed with some ideas (hello, Pinterest board!) and it’ll be easy for your nail-tech to give you the best mani for your dreamy day! FYI, current bridal nail trends include pops of metallics on a nude or white base, and darker polishes in purple and navy – could your talons be your something blue? If you’re not trendled and after something more subtle and timeless, a French manicure is always good. How about funking it up with ombré detailing? You’re never fully dressed without a smile, so perhaps now is the time to perfect it? Having your pearly whites bleached or straightened is a breeze with one of the many experienced dental clinics in the northeast – just make sure to get this organised wellahead of the big day. This is also a prime time to get your nutrition right and release some endorphins. Not only will exercise and healthy eating keep you fit, it’ll also help combat the pre-wedding stress! Faithful Florals Flowers www.daniellelesliephotography.com

Weddings held in the height of lockdown may have lacked many a thing (full guest lists, music and mingling for a start) but, along with love, joy and celebratory vibes, there was one tradition that was almost always present and relatively unchanged – the ever-faithful, ever-wonderful bouquet. So, from flower combos to colour palettes, let’s see what 2022 holds for wedding florals… The blooms

Going for a one-flower bouquet? Take inspiration from The Duchess of Cambridge and opt for the delicate, white lily of the valley. Set to be a popular choice this season, it’s fragile and beautiful yet classic and glamorous. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

The shapes

Traditional brides after a structured bouquet will see it comes with a twist this year. Strong and expressive, expect lots of layers – you’ll want a solid colour at the base and a striking ‘break-through’ element, like a red rose. Those after an unconventional bouquet will be all over the ‘semi-cascade’ trend, complete with unusual, exotic blooms.

FLOWERS

The colours

The mention of a red rose may just have tipped you off on the 2022 colour palette, which is all about drama and luxury. After a year of intimate weddings and subtle blooms, couples are increasingly looking to make a floral statement and showcase the beauty of nature. Jewel tones like purples and reds seem to be taking centre stage but if you’re after something softer, consider pastel layering – poppies, peonies and hydrangeas, for example.

The décor

With outdoor weddings understandably popular in 2021, the obsession with greenery is set to continue. Weave beautiful blooms into your venue design with foliage garlands running the length of your tables and, if you’re going all out, a spectacular hanging installation – a great way to make use of your space and wow guests!

The eco-factor

Dried flowers and their environmental benefits aren’t going anywhere. This year, expect to

73

see them combined with fresh flowers – the perfect balance of texture and colour. Not just sustainable, dried florals come in a variety of colours so you can choose to either reflect their natural state or your wedding palette.

The added extra

Looking for something to keep your guests entertained while you sneak off for your photoshoot? Give them the chance to create a wee bouquet or floral crown at your very own flower bar. Just add flowers, wire, tape, scissors, wire cutters and a sign explaining it all – your trusty, local florist will be able to help you out here!

The non-trend trends

After a couple of years of staying home and stifled creativity, couples are expressing themselves more than ever via their big day, and we’re here for it! So, bear in mind that trends might not actually be trends, and doing something original, unique and personal is most certainly in for 2022! Can’t wait to see what you come up with! ♥

at Waterside

After New Zealander Andrew popped the question atop a mountain in Japan, there was no time wasted in venuehunting as his fiancée’s dad was crafting the perfect place from scratch back in Aberdeen. Now, as Waterside takes its place as one of the northeast’s most exciting new venues, bride Lindsey talks us through their epic summer celebration…

“We always wanted to put up a marquee and get married on my parents’ farm and, fortunately, they’d started landscaping Waterside in 2019. Our wedding was perfectly timed for the grand opening. Next up was the dress – I’d set my heart on a style I found online but trying it on, I knew it wasn’t right. Shopping didn’t take long, though. In the second shop we went to, I cried wearing the first dress they put me in… It was ‘The One’!

My ivory Justin Alexander dress was made from Mikado silk, and I teamed it with a lovely detachable train and a sparkly hairpiece as I didn’t want to wear a veil. In the evening, I changed into a glittery, feathery Jovani dress – I just loved it. After shopping, I’d asked Andrew to guess what I picked, and he guessed everything right! Thankfully I managed to hide my reaction. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

76 ♥ HEADER For decoration, we had white and pink flowers and kept everything else simple to match. A few of the details we made ourselves – Andrew made the place names with his 3D printer, and we made the drinks menus and table name cards together. I did the candles for the tables and Andrew’s parents made the cake with decorations from New Zealand, and our invitations. My brother, Melvin, made our wooden easels and Andrew’s mum created our mirrored table plan. The night before the big day we had drinks in the sun and played croquet with the family. It was a midnight finish with some questionable tan lines, but everyone had fun! In the morning my bridesmaids and I got ready in the farmhouse, sipping champagne. Meanwhile, Andrew went for a fresh haircut, and I’d arranged for his friend to collect him in his 1989 Ford Sierra, which he’d sold to him years ago. He loved the surprise.

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

We feel very lucky to have been the first ones to get married at Waterside! I was driven to the wedding in the trailer of my late Granda Jim’s Massey Ferguson tractor, sounding the horn on arrival while waving to Andrew and our guests. We had a humanist ceremony outside in the sunshine and it was simply perfect. We’d written our own vows, and we laughed and cried… And so did some of the guests! Afterwards, we drank fizz and cocktails outside to the sound of The London Essentials before heading in for a delightful meal. The musicians kept playing and everyone ended up on the dancefloor before the cake had even been cut! Our first dance, which we’d choreographed to Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters and Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love, was a surprise

to our guests. It was so fun and memorable. We started ballroom dancing lessons a few years ago and, despite a tad too much wine beforehand, it went smoothly!

HEADER

77

The rest of the evening was spent enjoying the dancefloor, the bar and the evening sunshine – with a barbecue, a sushi tower and an incredible firework display to keep everyone entertained. We feel very lucky to have been the first ones to get married at Waterside! ♥

Bella barn-style venues From converted cowsheds to beautifully restored barns, rustic blank canvas venues have been popular for quite a few years now and they’re not going anywhere soon. Lucky for you, the abundance of Aberdeenshire countryside means you’ve got plenty of choice – and quirky new spaces are always popping up. Take a look at Schivas Steading, for example. Hosting its first weddings just this year, it’s a beautifully constructed steading conversion over two floors with a striking window and a glorious glass roof section. With a backdrop of majestic rolling hills, it’s a photographer’s paradise outside as well as inside!

So, what’s the big draw with this type of venue, you ask? Well, first up, they simply ooze that dreamy rustic, vintage vibe. Just add bunting, birdcages, books and a couple of hay bales and you’re good to go!

VENUES & MARQUEES

The fact these large, flexible spaces offer a ‘blank canvas’ is a big attraction too, especially for the DIY-mad couple who just can’t wait to put their own stamp on their big day – and their space. Divide the bright, airy venue as you please, decorate as you wish, hire the furniture you like and bring in all the suppliers you love. This is the ultimate venue type for a superpersonalised wedding!

Marvellous marquees Pippa Middleton had a huge glass structure installed on the grounds of her family home, especially for her and James Matthews to tie the knot in. So, why shouldn’t you erect your very own marquee, too!?

www.aboynephotographics.com

www.simonesmithphotography.com

Here, there are a few key advantages. First, you can host your wedding almost anywhere, whether you follow Pippa’s lead and say: “I do” at home; pop your marquee up in the grounds of a historic venue or select a special spot – somewhere particularly beautiful, or with personal memories for you as a couple. Once erected, you’ll have a similar base as the barn-style venues mentioned above – a blank canvas to which you can add your own theme, décor, accessories, suppliers… Everything! Not only that, the marquee itself can be tailored to your wants and needs. From shape to colour to size, the makeup of the structure is extremely flexible and there are very few limits – let your imagination run wild!

It may be tricky but remembering that all venues bring something amazing to the table is an important mindset to keep.

Respecting heritage If you’re tying the knot in a historically important place, you’ll want to read up on any regulations to be upheld to keep the venue in its greatest shape – this could be anything from footwear recommendations to fireworks restrictions. But don’t worry, your host will explain everything. And we promise the joy your antique setting will bring will certainly outweigh any restrictions! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

ACCOMMODATION

Where to Stay Accommodation If you’re tying the knot off-grid or have a lot of guests making a big journey, it’s worthwhile sharing a few accommodation options to make your friends and families’ lives easier. Here’s what to look for…

Your venue

Serviced apartments

If you’re getting married in a large hotel with rooms aplenty, let your guests know – especially if they’d get a discounted rate. On the other hand, if there’s limited accommodation and you’ve booked it out for the bridal party, give them a heads up.

Hotels

Perfect if they want to turn an overnight stay into a mini-break – and why not after staying at home for so long!? Serviced apartments, essentially a luxe home from home, are great for those with kids or those who want to go all out getting ready – hit the gym, get a visit from a hairdresser and have the outfits freshly laundered!

The northeast is simply brimming with hotels that offer the ultimate in comfort and service. Your guests can head to your wedding knowing their room will be clean on return and a delicious breakfast will be served in the morning!

Saying: "I do" somewhere remote? There may very well be a quirky Airbnb or two in the area! Do a little research and if you spot somewhere good, suggest it to your guests. ♥

HOTELS

www.meldrumhouse.com www.jonathanaddie.com

Considering one of the northeast’s top hotels as your wedding venue? We’re not surprised – they’re utterly amazing, from their feature staircases to their floor-to-ceiling windows and their award-winning chefs! Here’s why your hotel wedding will be simply wonderful… 1. All under one roof From the dinner the night before and wedding morning prep to saying: “I do” and hitting the dancefloor, having everything in one place can be a great advantage, especially in the winter months. It doesn’t just save on transport costs, it’s a big tick for guests who’ve travelled far as they know their bed for the night is just upstairs.

2. Accommodation galore On that note, there’s unlikely to be any difficulty in guests securing a room because large hotels www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

have so much space. Usually when you book your wedding, a hotel will kindly reserve a set number of rooms at a good rate for your guests and perhaps even treat you – honeymoon suite, anyone? It’s a great weight off for guests who can drive to and from the venue, and still enjoy a drink to toast to the happy couple. Plus, they get to celebrate again in the morning. Even if you prefer privacy and breakfast in bed, they’ll be happy catching up over a fry up with those they missed out on talking to the day before.

3. Suppliers? Sorted! As you’ll see from the pages of GWD, wedding planning involves pulling many different services together for one very special day. Not just tricky in terms of making sure all your favourites are available then, it comes with sub-tasks, too – comparing prices and services before making a decision on each supplier, for example. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

HOTELS

Hiring a hotel removes some of this stress as many of these services will be or can be included. Wedding planner? Tick! Catering? Tick! Bar? Tick! And that’s just the big things. From a red carpet and ropes for your arrival to name cards at your guests’ place settings, a hotel is likely to be able to cater to your every need! That said, what you get will be determined by your exact package, so make sure you’re clear on that before signing the dotted line. There’s no point paying for something you don’t need, and you don’t want to be expecting something that’s not included.

5. A little black book of contacts As you’ll have realised, hotels can provide almost anything you may need for the big day – but everything has limits! Some services will have to be external (photography and videography; cakes and flowers, for example) but your hotel can still help you here. With years upon years in the industry, your trusty team will have the ultimate little black book when it comes to wedding suppliers and they’ll be able to point you in the right direction. In fact, they may even have a ready-made list of recommended suppliers who’re used to working with them and at the venue. Take heed of this advice – hotel staff know their stuff!

6. A flexible venue for all guest lists Whilst some boutique hotels may be slightly restricted in terms of guest list size, the majority are ultra-flexible with ballrooms, extensive gardens and space to erect a marquee. You could be forgiven for thinking a grand hotel ballroom is only for those with invitees going into the hundreds. But these very versatile rooms can be

divided in all manner of ways to suit weddings small and large. Intimate wedding? The hotel team will section off a romantic space fitting to your ceremony guest list and reserve the rest for the wedding breakfast and dancing. One bonus here is no turnaround time!

7. Fantastic facilities Focused on the comfort of their everyday guests, hotels are guaranteed to have fantastic facilities, and our northeast offering doesn’t disappoint. You’ll likely have loads of parking (including plenty of space for busses to turn if needed), great and multiple powder rooms, a stage area for your entertainment, quiet spaces for older guests to chill out if needed and access to top-notch WiFi – not just a consideration for getting the day on the ‘gram, it’s essential for many suppliers, too.

EVENT ACCESSORIES

Your Stamp EventOwn Decor After a few years with fewer weddings than we’d have liked, we know we're not the only ones chomping at the bit to hear the event décor trends for 2022 nuptials! Are you ready to personalise your big day?

Bridgerton does weddings With eBay having reported a 205% rise in searches for a Daphne-inspired puff-sleeved wedding dress, the award-winning Netflix show clearly inspired many 2021 weddings. This season looks to be no different – Regency era weddings, complete with draping wisteria, hanging lanterns and classic cakes, are here to stay. Add handwritten notes, literary quotes and a vintage afternoon tea for the full effect – or hire a local events company who’ll source it all for you!

Going green Sustainability creeps a little higher on the agenda every year, which we’re so here for. In 2022, couples are planning to replace short-term décor options with longer-lasting, eco-friendly alternatives. Pick plants in place of flowers, opt for hanging lanterns and string lights over candles, and choose olive leaves instead of confetti.

Something old is having a moment No longer just an heirloom accessory, ‘something old’ is taking weddings by storm in the form of historic furniture. Travel back in time with a vintage photobooth (that makes black-and-white pics for maximum impact), an old-fashioned ice cream cart or antique armchairs for your pre-wedding drinks area.

Bold colours, earthy tones or none at all This year, monochrome is big news in the wedding world – it’s all over everything, from stationary to décor. But, at the other end of the scale, bold colours are having a moment, too. And so are nature-inspired, earthy colours...

Looking for one shade to watch in 2022? It’s rust! Team unique terracotta pots, driftwood and dried flowers with linen napkins and pops of amber and coral for a décor palette to die for.

Balloons will be big The perfect décor indoors or outdoors, you can expect to see the most extra balloon arrangements at this season’s weddings! From arches to garlands, it’s all about the inflatable wow factor. Why not double their use and move your balloon decs as your wedding moves through the venue?

Talking of arches… Trendy, unique arches are going to be a popular way to personalise a venue. After the rustic, vintage vibe? Go for an arch made of birch. For an ultra-modern statement, how about hexagonal wooden arches? Alternatively, keep it simple and elegant with metal.

Sniff sniff… Remember when the Duchess of Cambridge scented the whole of Westminster Abbey with Jo Malone candles? Now it’s your turn as 2022 couples look to smells, sights and sounds to immerse their guests in their big day. How about scented stationery, a different scent for each room in your venue or one for each song the band plays?

Next level entertainment From bouncy castles, beer pong and pinatas to circus performers, petting zoos and temporary tattoos, some of you really are going the extra mile when it comes to keeping your guests occupied! THE CERMONY

Your Ceremony Ceremony

Weddings in 2022 and beyond are – more than ever – going to be about creating an unforgettable, personal and unique experience. Read on for some elements that you can add to your civil ceremony to really put your stamp on it…

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.daniellelesliephotography.com

THE CERMONY

Write your own vows

Summing up your love, dreams and promises to your other half in just a few short minutes (in front of a pretty sizeable audience no less) is no mean feat! But, as overwhelming as it initially sounds, couples are almost always delighted they did it. You get a chance to tell your love story to those celebrating with you, give them a sneak peek into what goes on behind the scenes and tell the person you’re marrying what they really mean to you.

Struggling to get started? Here are five ideas of what to include: • Make promises. • Say “I love you”. • Share a personal story. • Tell them you’ll be there, no matter what. • Acknowledge you’ll need outside support to be successful. Get guests involved Contributions from friends and family in the form of readings and poems add an oh-sopersonal touch – and take the heat off you for a bit! Go for something classic (Captain

125

Corelli’s Mandolin), something quirky (Edward Monkton) or, if they’re an aspiring poet/ writer, something they’ve penned themselves. Make the music all yours Again, capitalising on the talents of your nearest and dearest, if you have a singer, violinist or harp player on hand, now’s the time to cash in that favour they owe you! If not, you can still go ultrapersonal with your choice of music and guarantee the sound of your nuptials will be unlike any others out there.

www.simonesmithphotography.com

Additional ceremonies From the ring ceremony to the rose ceremony and the quaich to the candle, many couples don’t realise the variety of options they have to get a bit creative and add loads of meaning as they say:

“I do”. The person conducting your ceremony will keep you right and help you pick what’s right for you as a couple but, in general, these are a collection of deep-rooted traditions used in weddings to symbolise things like togetherness, strength and

sharing. Incorporating one or more is lots of fun, and a great photo opp, too! With all of the above, be sure to run your ideas past the person marrying you and the place in which you’re tying the knot, just to make sure they meet the requirements! ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

FOOD AND DRINK

Delicious Catering Dining

Nutritiously delicious dishes or tempting comfort food? The world is your platter when it comes to choosing what your hungry guests get to dig into after a day of celebrating your love. While the traditional sit-down meal is a wedding classic, new trends have also taken a place on the plate!

To buffet or not buffet… With the pandemic changing our everyday lives, some may have reservations about buffets. But don’t worry, you can still have a beautiful spread of pick-your-own while keeping safe. Have a designated ‘picker’ that helps guests make their selection to minimise the number of people touching the food. Still getting the feeling of choice, you and your guests will feel secure that the handling of the food is hygienic!

On the road again!

www.byrhea.co.uk

Versatile veggies Vegetarian and vegan dishes have become a staple at most restaurants, so why not take a leaf from these menus and go meatless at your wedding? Not just good for the environment and the planet, it’s also healthy for you and your guests. Bonus points if you use locally-sourced ingredients, a beautiful homage to your area and Mother Earth herself! ♥ www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

www.aboynephotographics.com

Wanting something different? How about hopping on the trend train of food trucks… The destination is delicious! Not only will your guests remember this special part of your wedding, it’s also great for social distancing since the food can be served outside. Worth keeping our unpredictable Scottish weather in mind, though. Invest in a bunch of brollies to keep by the door and if it’s a wonderful winter wedding, add hot drinks to the mix… Mulled wine, anyone?

Cakes

Wedding Cake 101

There’s more to ordering a wedding cake than you may think and with some suppliers booked up years in advance (especially at the moment) it’s best to get started in plenty of time! With 2022 weddings looking busier than ever and wedding cake designers needing time to source the materials they need for your masterpiece, you should think about ordering at least six months before your wedding date.

First up, though, decide roughly how much you want to spend (imagine they created the most beautiful design you simply couldn’t afford?) and make sure you’ve already settled on your major wedding style decisions – you may want your cake to complement your venue, the season, the flowers or even your menu. Think about the practicalities, too. Generally, three tiers will serve 50-100 people and you’d be looking at five for 200 plus. If you’re hosting in a grand ballroom you’ll want height ,so how about columns between the tiers, or an artificial layer to add grandeur? Your trusty supplier, of course, will keep you right.

Speaking of which, always try to meet your potential cake creator face-to-face so you get a real feel for their experience, ideas and personality – are they the right fit for you? They’ll be able to show you a portfolio of previous work, plus testimonials and – the best bit – some samples! If you don’t know where to start, you’ll be in the best place. Looking at their work together, you can highlight what you like or don’t like and, from there, they can start to sketch out what your dream cake might look like. An experienced supplier will go over the practicalities with you, too. Think delivery, setup times, on-the-day requirements (they might need to add some finishing touches!) and postwedding storage. Find out how long it’ll last and whether or not you can freeze it. Wouldn’t some wedding cake be a delicious post honeymoon treat!? ♥

Later, look for a fantastic cover band that’ll get people involved and singing along to their fave songs! DJs, of course, will get the party going all night, perfect for the dancing queens and kings!

The perfect opportunity to shoot some stories for the ‘gram! On that note, remember the iconic photograph of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, standing in their reception attire looking over their firework display on their wedding night? Well, that can be you too!

www.daniellelesliephotography.com

If fireworks aren’t allowed at your venue, or rockets and Catherine wheels aren’t your thing, how about swapping them out for beautiful paper lanterns? Not just gorgeously lighting up the sky, you can also make this into a sweet ceremony to mark your day ending.

Got little ones coming? Keeping the kiddos entertained can be a challenge but where there’s a will, there’s a way! Could you try a designated play area (beware of missing adult guests if Lego is involved!) or hire a magician? LOVE

It seems bride Gayle and her groom, Matthew, are truly lucky - not just in love but life too! At Your Wedding Exhibition, this leading lady immediately fell in love with Ballogie and entered a competition to win a wedding at the idyllic venue, not expecting to take home the big prize, of course…! Now, telling the story of their dream day, this couple has us wishing upon a shooting star! www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

“After meeting in a nightclub, Matthew and I got engaged during a romantic trip to Aviemore. Straying from our usual campsite there, he’d booked a resort instead… I should have known it was something special! After he got down on one knee by Loch Morlich (one of our favourite places and now the name of our precious pup) I went to Your Wedding Exhibition in Aberdeen. I fell for Ballogie and the idea of saying "I do" on a summer’s day in Deeside… I was literally brought to tears by the thought! Not expecting my luck to come through, I put my name into a draw to win a wedding there. Watching the result live online, I couldn’t believe it when they called my name! Poor Matthew was sleeping but once the shock of my happy screaming eased off, he was equally excited. It really was the perfect venue for www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

us, especially as we wanted several days of celebrating with family that had far to come. While the pandemic forced us to postpone our wedding and reduce our guestlist, we saw the champagne flute as half full. We got a new date, secured our dream celebrant and found out the music duo we’d always wanted was available. We also realised that if we had fewer guests, we could speak to all of them during our day! It’s all about perspective… Seeing all our wonderful suppliers’ hard at work the day before the wedding was surreal. Family and friends popped in, too, and we shared a BBQ with some of them later in the sun. Relaxing with some food and fizz at beautiful Ballogie was amazing and the perfect prep for the coming day! After getting ready with my bridesmaids (and some serious tear-dabbing while seeing my parents!) it was ceremony time. Here, we had our fave songs and lots of other personal touches. Making sure to let our guests play after sitting still, we had garden games prepared for the drinks reception. After dinner, it was time for our

143

first dance and it had to be memorable as this was the only one allowed due to restrictions. So, we had a routine choreographed and cut some intense shapes on the floor! Imagining our day any other way is impossible! Having our gorgeous puppy Morlich with us and, of course, the venue we dreamed of, made the stress of planning a wedding during a pandemic worth it – and showed how lucky we truly are. Perhaps it’s time to buy a lotto ticket!” ♥

RECORDING THE DAY

www.byrhea.co.uk

Whatsmore, in a few years to come when you settle down with a glass of wine to toast to your anniversary you’ll get to swoon over how picture-perfect you looked. Or even a few more years beyond that – wouldn’t it be fun to show any potential children what wedding style looked like back in the day? Do note, though, that photography and videography can take up a good chunk of your budget. It really is a (totally worthwhile) investment for the rest of your life, and choosing your supplier isn’t a decision that should be

taken lightly. Add to that the fact that ‘togs and filmmakers are more in demand now than ever, and how you’ll capture the day really should be one of the first things you look at once you’ve set the date. So, whether you choose photo or film (or both, which we highly recommend) it’s so important to take all the right steps to get the end result you want and need. Lucky for you, we’ve rounded them up! Check out the next few pages for your no-nonsense guide to finding the best photographer and videographer for you… www.deesidephoto.co.uk

RECORDING THE DAY

Start with research Flicking through GWD is a great start as very soon you’ll realise you’re gravitating towards certain types of images. Start saving anything you like immediately, whether you’re going creative with a tear-out-and-stick mood board or digital with Pinterest. You’ll quickly begin to see similarities in what you’ve chosen. There’s more to it, though, and one of the best ways to find the photographer or videographer for you is to ask for recommendations. If someone you know got married recently (or even not recently – chances are their snapper will still be around) and you adored their photos, ask who did them and if they’d mind you following suit. Already secured your venue? Ask the event coordinator for recommendations. Not only do they have a great network of contacts, they may well have a couple of suppliers who are regulars at the venue and know it inside out. They’re sure to have the scoop on all the best spots to shoot the newlyweds!

www.daniellelesliephotography.com

Explore styles As you carry out your research, you’ll quickly realise there are a whole host of different ways to photograph and film a wedding. Do you prefer natural, unposed imagery? Something more formal? Or maybe a mixture?

www.byrhea.co.uk

Look at the editing styles, too. Are you drawn to bright, colourful images or those that have more of a moody, storytelling approach? Answering questions like this will help you narrow down suppliers by style.

Sound out your shortlist Got a few faves? Great! Get in touch and ask: • About their availability on your wedding date • Whether or not you can see a full album/film (more on this in a moment) • If you can read testimonials – or even speak to a recent client. Ask them how the day went, if they got everything they wanted and how happy they were with the end result. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

150

RECORDING THE DAY This might be a good time to run other things by your potentials too, like what their back-up plans are if there’s an emergency; whether or not they’ve worked at your venue before and their position on an engagement shoot if you’d like one.

Pour over a portfolio Being wowed by three or four highlight photos or a trailer film is great but viewing a full wedding album or movie is how you’ll really know if this person’s work is going to suit you. Consider how the series of snaps/reels tell the story of the day – does it flow well? Is there consistency in terms of quality and style? It’s here you may spot little things that aren’t quite ‘you’ – you might love their candid shooting, for example, but not be keen on what they do when it comes to group photos. This is no bad thing, though. It’s what helps you narrow down your shortlist to find ‘The One’!

Ask the dreaded question

www.aboynephotographics.com

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

No-one likes talking about it, but everyone has to… Money! There’s no point falling in love with a supplier who you later realise you can’t afford, so it’s worth being upfront about costs early on.

RECORDING THE DAY

151

Enquire about how they charge – is it an hourly rate or a package deal? – and how many of them there’ll be. Second shooters are increasingly common, and great for capturing angles a single photographer or filmmaker would naturally miss, but they obviously add a little expense. Consider how long you want them there for. Would you like all the prep photographed, and some drone shots above the venue? Or are you keeping it short ‘n’ simple with the ceremony, the cake cutting and the first dance? Don’t forget the little things, like factoring in travel costs and providing a meal for them (not necessary but nice to do)!

Think ahead to the end Not usually a dealbreaker but it’s worth asking about the finished product. You’ll want to cover things like: • How they edit their work: The post-production stage is where shots from your day become works of art. Various processes are applied to create a magical finished version (like those mentioned when we talked about style earlier), so it’s worth asking about them. Do you want some photos in black-and-white, for example, or a certain song played over your movie?

RECORDING THE DAY

www.aboynephotographics.com

• When you can expect it: Do bear in mind that the pandemic has caused a massive wedding backlog so wait times will likely be longer across the board. • If you’ll get a sneak preview: Most photographers will send a few star shots immediately after the wedding whilst some videographers treat their couples to a trailer ahead of the big blockbuster release! • What format it comes in: ‘Tog-wise, are they providing you with a big, glossy album? Statement prints to hang? Digital images to do with as you please? When it comes to your wedding film, would you like a branded DVD or a digital download? Make sure your expectations will be met and ask what the protocol is for sharing your photography and videography with family and friends. www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.uk

RECORDING THE DAY

153

Say hello in person – or via Zoom! They’re your type on paper… But what about in person? You’ll spend so long with your photographer on your big day (possibly more than you’ll spend together) so it’s incredibly important that you feel comfortable around them, and that they ‘get’ you – both of you, that is.

www.danirosephotography.com

Most photographers will be delighted to do this as, like you, they want to work with people they get on with. As such, they’re likely to recommend an in-person meet before you sign on the dotted line or, with the way the world is right now, a hello via Zoom. Don’t worry, this isn’t anything formal. Just a chance to have a chat, discuss what you want from your wedding photography/ videography and really get a feel for whether you’re a match. And we bet, after just a few moments, you’ll know! Good luck! ♥
