Every year when we publish the May Women in Business issue, it is a milestone for me as a woman in business. It’s the anniversary of my purchase of Inside Northside - the culmination of 20+ years in the media industry and my personal drive to build a brand that’s deeply important to me. This year, Inside Northside and I celebrate our two year anniversary together!

And over these past two years, I have had the opportunity to meet so many incredible women. Women who are in business, women serving our community, women in our government, women raising and teaching children, women doing phenomenal things big and small, and women who are just putting one foot in front of the other to get by each day. Every one of them has had an influence on me and on the content of this magazine. I am thankful and grateful for the chance to sit with the women in our community and tell their stories.

Which brings me to a GREAT BIG ANNOUNCEMENT.

Launching in May is our brand new Women in Business podcast!

We’ll have a dedicated channel to tell even more stories about the challenges and rewards of this entrepreneurial life. Please look for more details on our social channels and reach out to me with any thoughts or feedback - the Women in Business here in the Inside Northside office are always strategizing about what comes next for us and we love to hear your ideas!

TIA CRONIN: art, creating spreading joy

Cover artist Tia Cronin is drawn to beauty in nature like a honey bee to jasmine. “Growing up, I was immersed in nature,” says Tia of her childhood days in the Pacific Northwest. From the lush rainforest and majestic mountains of Washington’s northwest peninsula to the fragrant sagebrush and rolling tumbleweed of Oregon’s high desert, she has lived in communion with nature and loved it.

PHOTOS BY SYDNEY JOHNSON

Like nature, art was another constant in Tia’s life. “I was attracted to art and visual things from an early age. I remember vividly when I was a young child getting my first box of crayons—the 24 pack—the smell, the bright colors—it was the most exciting thing for me.”

At 19, Tia moved to California for college. Earning degrees in graphic design and communications, she landed corporate jobs in sales and marketing. Later, when she married the love of her life, a handsome Brit named John, she took on another job—being stepmom to his three children, Dylan, Kealan and Aidan. In time, she and John had a child of their own, a daughter they named Neala.

With a full-time job and a houseful of kids, Tia still nurtured her artistic talent. “At first I worked with pastels but soon transitioned to acrylics. They are fast drying and easy to clean up so I could paint for an hour, leave it and come back whenever I had the time—and the place.”

When Tia and John moved their family into a bigger house, the call to paint art became clear. “It was a TALL house,” says Tia. “The walls were in dire need of art—huge pieces of art.” Tia set to work on her very first paintings on canvas. Unlike many artists who start out painting small, she dove right in on larger—36 x 36 and 30 x 40— canvases. “I painted nature-inspired things like flowers and birds and some still life—all very colorful and pretty bold.”

Tia gradually transitioned to painting abstracts and exhibited her art in coffee shops and galleries. As sales grew, she rented a two-room

studio/gallery but later returned to painting at home. “I remember the first time I added ‘artist’ below my name on my business cards. It felt strange but as I was living an artist’s life–consistently creating and selling art—I slowly grew to accept the title.”

Tia also grew to accept another platform for showing her work—social media. “Years ago, I began posting photos of my paintings and works-in-progress, primarily using Instagram to publicize my work. I also followed other artists and listened to art podcasts, learning from them and realizing we shared many of the same challenges. No doubt, social media’s provided a tremendous boost to my career.”

After 35 years living in California, Tia and John wanted to relocate—and Louisiana was on their radar since daughter Neala and her husband, Tucker, were living there. At the time, Tia and John were empty nesters, working remotely at their jobs due to COVID, and looking to move to the South. Tia’s mom planned to join them, too. Sadly, those plans changed when Tia’s mom was killed in a tragic automobile accident. “It was devastating,” says Tia. “I needed my family more than ever,

ARTIST

so my husband suggested we move to Louisiana to be near Neala and Tucker.

Tia readily agreed and the wheels were set in motion. “I donated, sold and gave away much of my work, taking only 25 paintings with me, mainly to decorate our house. One of those paintings was the last painting I’d done before my mom died in the accident. As usual, I had no plan when I started working on it. I put paint on the canvas and let it tell me where to go next. I think the flowers came first. I started adding butterflies but I didn’t like them. Then the rabbit silhouette came, leaping into the picture. I posted it on Instagram. When my mom saw it, she called to say, ‘You should call it Leaping into Spring,’ so I did.”

While Tia prepared to move to Louisiana, Neala wasted no time finding a home for her parents in Covington. It was under construction but they bought it, sight unseen, because flying during COVID prevented an in-person visit.

Tia and John quickly fell in love with Covington and the surrounding towns but Tia did not know if she’d pursue her art business again. “To tell you the truth, given everything that had

I create beauty and share it with the world.

happened, I really thought I was done with art—certainly my art business.”

However, after moving in, Tia painted a few pieces for their new house. Then the builder’s wife asked her to do a painting of her daughter-in-law’s wedding bouquet. Next, she painted another piece for a house-warming gift. “Before I knew it, I was painting regularly. I considered re-starting my art business but, before I could, I had a lot of work to do.”

Tia spent the next year establishing a business, networking with local businesses, building a website, creating and posting on a new Instagram account, and, of course, painting.

A year after moving to Covington, she retired from her job in order to devote herself to her art (and her adorable grandson, Stetson). For artistic inspiration, she turned again to what she loves—nature. Vincent van Gogh once said, “If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” And Tia did. As she painted her abstract florals, something magical happened—they effused JOY.

California native Becky Cagle, one of Tia’s most ardent fans, experienced it firsthand. Referring to her favorite painting of two orange koi and a lotus blossom, Becky says. “I love the vibrant colors. They make me feel happy and make me smile.”

Shannon Stage, co-owner of Sassy Bird Interiors in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, echoes that sentiment. “Tia’s artwork makes you feel

16 INSIDE NORTHSIDE COVER

good. When customers see it, I hear them say, ‘Oh, I just love that. It makes me happy!’”

Lynn Harper of Austin, Texas, another faithful customer, commissioned Tia to paint a diptych of a flowering vine for her dining room. “There are a lot of times that looking at that painting makes my day and leaves me smiling,” says Lynn. “Tia’s paintings add a spark of sunshine and spring to my space. I feel her joy in them.”

Craig Cordell, owner of Clayton House Marketplace in Covington, says customers love how bright and colorful Tia’s work is without being overly cliche. “And those who know Tia comment that her artwork is happy and bright—just like Tia. She’s a fantastic person. We’ve had hundreds of vendors over the years. Tia is one of our favorites, one of the best.”

Lisa Condrey Ward of Southern Hotel in Covington is such a fan, she selected Tia twice as the featured artist for White Linen Night—and displayed her camellia painting for the annual camellia show in January. “Tia’s work is very cheerful and has

MAY-JUNE 2024 17

great colors,” says Lisa. “It has a lot of appeal and sells at an approachable price point.”

Despite these glowing accolades, not too long ago Tia found herself struggling with her purpose as an artist. “Was my artwork important at all?” she questioned. “Considering so much heart-breaking news in the world today, I wondered if I should be creating art that was more ‘important.’ Knowing my art does not carry a political, societal, or cultural commentary, I started to question my ‘why’ and whether or not my art had any value or purpose.”

Then, one day, while standing before her easel, wrestling with self-doubt, Tia turned on an Art Juice podcast. The words she heard gave her the answer:

“Not only is it okay for artists to fuel the hope and beauty in the world, it is what we all need now more than ever before.” (Georgina Noel, mindset and business coach)

Suddenly, it became crystal clear to Tia that she did have a purpose—a lofty and noble one. “I help people of all ages, circumstances and walks of life to experience beauty and joy and to be inspired and uplifted. I create beauty and share it with the world.”

Is there any finer purpose than that? wildpoppyartanddesign.com and Instagram @wildpoppyart

Nestled on the edge of Honey Island Swamp, Dave and Angelea Kronlage have created an outdoor area to rival the most luxurious resorts. Not only does the area feature a pool, three fire features, and a pool house, but it also includes a cold plunge pool and a swim-up bar. The drawings and design

for the project are by Randy Angell Designs out of Dallas, Texas. Rock “N” Pools executed the design to perfection, including the custom pool finish in Pebble Sheen with glass accent tiles. Interior Designer Christine Diggs designed the custom steel shade pergola with a retractable cover and selected all the exterior materials, furnishings, accessories, pillows, cushions, rugs, and lighting for the entire project.

As you walk into the loggia, you can view the vast expanse of the project. The flooring throughout is Mediterranean limestone, which was specially imported by container for the project and was custom cut in the Versailles pattern. The pavers were also custom cut in the same pattern to accommodate the pool design. Keynote Speaker: Lauren K Navarre, ARENA Collective

ARENA Collective is a boutique law firm and title company that is focused on the growth of businesses in St. Tammany Parish and surrounding areas. I am passionate about sharing the stories of the amazing entrepreneurs and clients we have in our community and helping each of them achieve their goals.

CAN YOU SHARE WHAT MAKES ARENA COLLECTIVE SPECIAL?

What makes us special is our relatable approach, combined with years of experience in the industry and strong partnerships. At ARENA Collective, clients are not just customers; they become friends, as the company prioritizes building lasting relationships based on trust and care.

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO EFFECTIVE TEAM MANAGEMENT AND COLLABORATION?

I have studied and practiced leadership for years and make it my goal each day to become a better person and better leader through my daily experiences. ARENA Collective sets its own standards for leadership as one it its core values.

Leadership is not your title, your status, or even a single attribute. Leadership is empowering another and interacting with empathy. It is showing up and making an impact on those around you. It’s teaching and inspiring others through consistent, confident actions. For a leader, humility is innate, and self-awareness is intentional. A leader has selfless ambition for the greater good of the company and its people, takes extreme ownership, and is resourceful and innovative when solving problems. A leader doesn’t find followers; a leader uncovers the potential in those he encounters.

I pray that I uphold this value every day.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KEEP LEARNING AND GROWING ALL THE TIME?

Set out every day to be a better version of yourself. Some days it’s professional; some days it’s personal. Just don’t stop learning. Read, a lot. Take the Risk. Be Silent. Seek Awareness. Condemn Nothing.

WHAT ARE SOME OBJECTIVES YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT ACHIEVING IN THE FUTURE?

We will continue to identify great businesses and service providers in our community that need our legal and administrative support, so we can help those businesses grow and thrive. We want to be part of building a better St. Tammany by contributing to the local ecosystem that empowers businesses to hire more local employees, develop and enhance local real estate, and contribute to our local organizations.

DR. ABBY GALJOUR: UNVEILING THE PASSION BEHIND THE “CAT LADY” VETERINARIAN

Dr. Abby Galjour, a native of Lafourche parish, pursued her passion for animals at LSU. She completed her undergraduate degree in Animal Science followed by her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine alongside Dr. Linn in May 2019. She recently joined the team at Northlake in November 2023.

HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY BEGIN?

My interest in veterinary medicine stemmed from a childhood surrounded by animals and a family dedicated to medicine. Veterinary medicine felt like the perfect fit for my passion for animals. Embracing the ‘cat lady’ title, I’ve always been dedicated to feline care, with 2 Sphynx cats, Mercy and Clay, by my side.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR INTEREST IN DENTISTRY WITHIN VETERINARY PRACTICE?

Dental health is crucial for overall well-being, a lesson learned from my mother, a dentist. Recognizing dental hygiene’s importance in preventing disease, it became vital in my practice and allows me to impact animals’ lives significantly. Although known as the ‘cat lady,’ ensuring all animals’ wellbeing, including their dental health, remains close to my heart.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE?

Balancing work and personal life is crucial for me. I unwind with my animals before volleyball, which helps me leave work at the clinic. Sometimes a case follows me home, reminding me of our bond beyond the clinic walls.

Visit Dr. Galjour at Northlake Veterinary Hospital to experience compassionate and specialized veterinary care tailored to meet the unique needs of your beloved pets.

DR. MALLORY LINN’S VETERINARY JOURNEY

Dr. Mallory Linn, a native of Hammond, Louisiana, embodies a passion for animals, focusing particularly on small pets while cherishing larger ones equally. At the heart of her home are two beloved dogs, Piggy June and Clyde Edwards, along with a retired horse named Ras and five chickens. Dr. Linn’s early years were marked by competitive horse riding, nurturing her deep connection with the outdoors, where she enjoys kayaking, hiking, and working in nature.

HOW HER EXPERIENCE AT LSU INFLUENCE HER JOURNEY

Her journey toward veterinary medicine began at LSU, where she gained invaluable experience as a veterinary assistant. This hands-on exposure honed her skills and grounded her expectations, bridging the gap between theoretical learning and practical application. Dr. Linn recognizes the importance of maintaining a healthy worklife balance, though she acknowledges the challenge of stepping away from demanding cases entirely.

HOW DR. LINN MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Affiliated with Northlake Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Linn offers dedicated service to her patients and their owners, navigating both joyful and trying times with empathy and understanding. Her personal experiences enable her to connect deeply with those she assists, fostering hope while maintaining realistic expectations. DR.

JESSICA VINTERELLA, DVM, CVA: A PIONEER IN COMPASSIONATE VETERINARY CARE

Dr. Vinterella advocates for integrative veterinary care, graduating from LSU School of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. With a Bachelor of Science from the University of Southern Mississippi, she integrates Western and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. As a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, she also aims to become Louisiana’s first Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner, focusing on pain management in animals.

WHAT INSPIRED A FOCUS ON PROVIDING DIGNIFIED END-OF-LIFE CARE?

Her career trajectory was influenced by her personal care of her physically and mentally aging dog. Confronted with incurable diagnosis, she prioritized her pet’s comfort and quality of life, ultimately making the difficult decision to help him pass peacefully at home. This experience inspired her to ensure that other pet owners have access to dignified end-oflife care options.

WHAT DOES DR. VINTERELLA’S APPROACH INVOLVE?

At Soul Purpose Veterinary Hospice & Home Euthanasia, she offers in-home guidance, supportive care, and euthanasia services to pet parents across St. Tammany Parish, Tangipahoa Parish, and beyond. Her approach emphasizes both medical expertise and emotional support for pets and their families. Furthermore, she educates on pet care and integrates Chinese and Western medicine approaches to enhance comprehensive pet well-being.

Whether at Northlake Veterinary Hospital or in a pet’s home, Dr. Vinterella is dedicated to ensuring a dignified and pain-free journey for every animal. Reflecting on her work, she stated, “It’s more than a career; it’s a calling. I am reminded that the weight I carry is just a small piece of the puzzle to make a pet’s life more comfortable. I understand, and I am here to help.”

TRICIA WOOD THOMAS: A GUIDING LIGHT OF HOPE AND HUMILITY

In a world often characterized by glitz and glam, Tricia Wood Thomas stands out not for her crown, but for her unwavering humility and extraordinary faith. Crowned Ms. Woman United States 2023, Tricia embodies a rare blend of warmth, humor, and deep dedication to causes close to her heart, particularly Alzheimer’s awareness and advocacy.

HOW TRICIA’S JOURNEY IN PAGEANTS SHAPED THE WOMAN SHE IS TODAY

Tricia’s journey to the pinnacle of the pageant world wasn’t just about seeking accolades; it was paved with personal trials and profound experiences that shaped her into the remarkable woman she is today. Rooted in a solid commitment to uphold fairness and integrity, the United States Pageants System provided not just a stage for Tricia’s inner spirit but a platform for her to amplify her voice for those in need.

Amidst the glamor, Tricia’s journey reflects resilience and compassion. As a mother, daughter, and friend, she has confronted life’s challenges, from losing her father to the dissolution of her marriage. Rather than defining her, these

experiences have fueled her dedication to championing women and girls. Tricia credits her mother, her biggest champion, for instilling in her values of kindness, humility, and perseverance.

WHY CHOOSE ALZHEIMER’S AS A PLATFORM

Tricia’s advocacy for Alzheimer’s awareness is deeply rooted in her personal connection to the disease, particularly her father’s battle with it. As a congressional advocate for Louisiana, she works alongside prominent figures like Steve Scalise to shed light on the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s. Through initiatives like “Come Walk with Ms. United States Woman,” she strives to rally support for Alzheimer’s research and caregiving in honor of her father and all those affected by the disease.

Additionally, her dedication to the cause led her to author “Cooking With Love in Louisiana” and “12 Steps to Journaling for Caregivers,” both heartfelt endeavors dedicated to her father’s memory and providing support to those affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia.

FINDING

SOLACE AND RENEWAL AMIDST

A BUSY LIFE

Tricia’s experiences are marked by her multifaceted identity—a graduate in pharmaceuticals, an entrepreneur, and a source of hope and guidance for those grappling with the challenges of Alzheimer’s. Her boutique, Elegant Grace, isn’t just a retail haven but a refuge for personal growth, where she extends a helping hand to girls in need, echoing her belief in the importance of inner beauty and self-esteem.

Amidst her bustling endeavors, Tricia finds solace in life’s simple pleasures—a quiet moment on the porch swing, sipping tea with her mother, indulging in Christian music, or losing herself in the pages of a feel-good book. It’s in these moments of tranquility that her resilient spirit finds renewal, enabling her to continue her tireless advocacy with grace and humility.

NAVIGATING THROUGH PERSONAL CHALLENGES AND SETBACKS

Tricia’s journey has been defined by resilience, overcoming hurdles and emerging stronger. After stepping away from

the pageant world as a young woman, she reentered in 2020 with a renewed sense of purpose. Despite grappling with her father’s illness and confronting personal adversities, she persisted, earning admiration and recognition along the way.

Her path is a testament to resilience, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, light can be found. Through her unwavering faith, compassion, and dedication, Tricia continues to inspire us to embrace kindness, humility, and resilience in our own paths.

Q&A with Michele Kidd Sutton, FACHE President & CEO of North Oaks Health System

Sutton recently celebrated a career 35-year milestone of unwavering service with North Oaks Health System. Ron Macaluso, Chairman of North Oaks’ Board of Commissioners, acknowledged her dedication during the annual Years of Service Ceremony in February.

Michele Kidd Sutton, FACHE, President & CEO of North Oaks Health System, recently celebrated her thirty-fifth year of service with one of the Northshore’s largest community-based healthcare organizations. Sutton also is serving as the newly installed Chair-Elect of the prestigious American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), which advances excellence in healthcare leadership internationally among its 49,000 members. As Chair-Elect, she has begun the first part of a three-year term to be followed by serving as Chair (in 2025) and Immediate Past Chair (in 2026).

OVERVIEW:

WHAT IS SPECIAL OR UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR COMPANY? WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR WORK?

I have worked in three different industries throughout my career, but healthcare leadership is what has really inspired me the most. Working in healthcare is a calling, and witnessing the North Oaks team make a difference in others’ lives never ceases to inspire me.

I have the privilege of seeing our doctors, nurses, advanced practitioners, technologists, therapists, plant operations engineers, environmental services staff and other team members improve the lives of our patients and their families with every interaction These healthcare heroes are selfless and graciously use their skills to treat our patients as if they were part of their own family. God may not have given me the gift of healing, but I am grateful to be blessed with the tools necessary to provide leadership, resources and support to those who’ve answered the call to save lives and ease suffering.

I wake up energized each morning in anticipation of witnessing the great deeds our team will accomplish. I am constantly in awe of their compassion, teamwork and dedication.

Sutton presents North Oaks Emergency Department Staff Kyra Palmer, RN (center) with the Nurse Excellence Award in the fall of 2023. Palmer’s coworkers and other North Oaks leaders joined in the recognition.

Read along as Michele elaborates on the driving forces behind her career and the roles that networking and mentorship have played in her success.

On March 23, Sutton was installed as a chair officer of the American College of Healthcare Executives. From left: 2023-2024 Immediate Past Chair Anthony Armada, FACHE; 2024-2025 Chair-Elect Michele Kidd Sutton, FACHE; 2024-2025 Chair William P. Santulli, FACHE; Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, ACHE President and CEO; and 2024-2025 Immediate Past Chair Delvecchio S. Finley, FACHE.

NETWORKING AND RELATIONSHIP BUILDING:

WHAT ROLE HAS NETWORKING PLAYED IN YOUR CAREER?

Ask any successful person how they achieved their career milestones, and they will surely tell you that the people, the relationships and the organizations were the biggest influencers along the way.

For me, a defining moment was when I joined ACHE. I came from banking as a marketing officer and needed a trusted partner to help me transition into the healthcare industry. The subsequent relationships forged and leadership skills I developed through my ACHE involvement have been welcome value adds.

I am a more effective leader today because of the relationships, strategies and tools I gained through ACHE and have implemented on behalf of North Oaks’ mission to improve lives every time, every touch.

MENTORSHIP AND SUPPORT:

HAVE YOU HAD MENTORS THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER? IF SO, HOW HAVE THEY IMPACTED YOUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

When I became an ACHE Regent for Louisiana a decade ago, the first person I met at the Council of Regents meeting was the late Rick Henault, fellow Louisianian and former Chair Officer.

Sutton speaks at ACHE’s 90th Convocation Ceremony honoring members who have advanced to Fellow status on March 24.

He said, “You’re the type of individual and leader ACHE seeks,” and then proceeded to sponsor and mentor me. On occasion, he would stop by my office to make sure I was fulfilling my potential and would offer encouraging words or sage advice. Though no longer with us, his memory and passion for healthcare excellence live on through me.

CONDREY WARD:

LEADING WITH VISION AND PASSION AT THE SOUTHERN HOTEL

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR BACKGROUND, INSPIRATION FOR YOUR CAREER, AND WHAT MAKES YOUR COMPANY UNIQUE?

My journey with the hotel began with a deep-rooted passion for historic preservation and a desire to revitalize a significant piece of Covington’s heritage. With a background in renovating historic buildings, I recognized the potential of the Southern Hotel to serve as an economic hub once again for downtown.

However, I knew that simply creating another hotel wouldn’t suffice; it had to be distinctive and cater to both transient guests and the local community. This inspired me to break away from conventional thinking and push boundaries to redefine the hotel experience.

Despite the challenges, maintaining steadfast commitment to our vision was pivotal throughout the renovation process. Our perseverance paid off, leading to the tremendous success the Southern Hotel has enjoyed over the past decade. As we approach our 10th anniversary since reopening, we’re eager to celebrate this achievement with the community that has supported us.

The upcoming anniversary party on June 1, 2024, serves as a testament to our journey and the integral role the community has played in our success. It’s an opportunity to reflect on our rich history while also looking ahead to a promising future. Additionally, the announcement of the Summer House expansion signifies our continued commitment to growth and innovation, further enhancing downtown Covington’s vibrancy.

Join us in celebrating the Southern Hotel’s unique charm firsthand at our anniversary party—tickets available on our website. As we move forward, we’re committed to honoring the hotel’s legacy while seizing new opportunities.

46 INSIDE NORTHSIDE

HOW DO YOU APPROACH TEAM MANAGEMENT AND COLLABORATION TO ENSURE A POSITIVE AND INCLUSIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT?

My approach to team management centers on inspiration and empowerment. I prioritize respect, provide necessary tools, and foster an inclusive environment where every voice is valued. I steer clear of micromanagement, focusing instead on enhancing the guest experience, building loyalty, and nurturing creativity within the team. Empowering team members to take ownership and encouraging collaboration creates a positive, thriving atmosphere for all.

WHAT SKILLS OR EXPERIENCES DO YOU BELIEVE HAVE BEEN CRUCIAL TO YOUR SUCCESS IN YOUR CAREER?

My background in civil litigation equipped me with crucial skills in critical thinking and problemsolving, essential for navigating the business world. Yet, it’s my passion for design and development that propels me forward. This blend of legal acumen and creative vision has been key to success at the Southern Hotel and beyond, allowing me to approach challenges with confidence and innovation.

WHAT ARE SOME KEY LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED THROUGHOUT YOUR JOURNEY, BOTH PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY?

One key lesson I’ve learned is: “If something is easy, it’s probably not worth doing. If you have a dream or an idea, you must be prepared to sacrifice a lot to achieve it. But if you can dream it - you can do it.” This motto embodies the resilience and determination that have guided me through challenges and successes. Whether personally or professionally, I’ve found that success demands dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.

LAVONDRA H. DOBBS LEADS VIA LINK

WHO IS LAVONDRA H. DOBBS?

LaVondra H. Dobbs isn’t just VIA LINK’s President & CEO; she’s a compassionate leader driven by personal experiences and a desire to make a difference. Fueled by her own family tragedy, Dobbs became deeply involved with VIA LINK’s services two decades ago. Recognizing the need for more comprehensive leadership, she took on the role of CEO, transforming VIA LINK into a place of hope for mental health awareness and vital support.

WHAT IS VIA LINK?

VIA LINK has been an integral part of the community for over a century, initially founded as the Volunteer Information Agency (VIA) to address the needs of individuals who were unaware of available services. Beginning with grassroots efforts and paper directories dating back to the 1930s, VIA LINK has evolved to provide telephonic crisis support and became a 501c3 organization in 1972. While the 211 and 988 dialing codes have been in place for 22 years, VIA LINK’s legacy spans a century of service.

While 211 services primarily cover southeast Louisiana, VIA LINK’s other services are statewide. With 28 crisis helplines, including 9-8-8 and 2-1-1, we assist Louisiana residents across the state. Our support ranges from food and utility aid to specialized helplines like the Teen Crisis textline and AgriStress helpline. Featuring over 4000 resources, our online Resource Directory provides comprehensive assistance. VIA LINK also hosts affiliate programs like Prevention Child Abuse Louisiana (PCAL) and offers extensive training and data collection services statewide.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD?

“After nearly 11 years at VIA LINK, we’ve transformed from a struggling agency into a thriving organization with over 90 employees,” reflects LaVondra H. Dobbs, President & CEO of VIA LINK. “Shifting from grant reliance to diversified contracts has been crucial for our growth. Moving forward, our goal is to expand income sources while offering more career growth opportunities within VIA LINK.

48 INSIDE NORTHSIDE

HOW HAVE MENTORS INFLUENCED LAVONDRA’S CAREER?

“My earliest mentors were my parents, who instilled in me a strong work ethic and a dedication to serving our community,” reflects Lavondra. “Growing up in a military family, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices and commitments of service. My father’s Naval career meant frequent moves, exposing me to diverse cultures and people. These experiences shaped my approach to work, fostering empathy and adaptability. Following in my parents’ footsteps led me to VIA LINK, an agency I consider the epitome of community support. Here, we not only connect individuals with essential resources but also prioritize mental health, offering a compassionate ear during times of crisis. Additionally, we gather and share data to ensure informed decision-making, empowering our communities to address their needs effectively.”

HOW DOES LAVONDRA PRIORITIZE SELF-CARE?

Self-care is crucial for LaVondra amidst life’s challenges. She finds comfort in activities like spending time with her

dog and dining out with loved ones, despite not favoring exercise. Additionally, she values input from her team and prioritizes humility in continuous learning. She views personal growth as a journey of self-discovery, focusing on introspection, reading enriching literature, and maintaining an open-minded attitude.

LaVondra’s unwavering dedication and personal experiences have made VIA LINK a beacon of hope for many, offering support, resources, and advocacy for mental health awareness in the community.

Within 60 days, we completely redesigned the interiors, including curating paintings by local artists to feature throughout the home. Welcome to Northshore Endocrinology and Diabetes, where personalized care meets expertise in Endocrinology. Join us as we delve into a conversation with Dr. Michelle Haggar, the visionary behind our clinic’s innovative approach to healthcare.

WHAT EXACTLY IS DIRECT CARE?

Direct Care is a healthcare model wherein patients establish a direct relationship with their providers, circumventing traditional insurance. Patients usually pay a fee that encompasses consultations, examinations, and testing. This care model prioritizes personalized, patient-centered care, preventive medicine, transparent pricing, and enhanced access to healthcare professionals.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES ENDOCRINOLOGY DIRECT CARE?

Endocrinology Direct Care seamlessly integrates the specialized focus of Endocrinology with the patient-centric principles of direct care, catering to individuals with diabetes, thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalances, and more.

WHY DID YOU OPT TO ESTABLISH A DIRECT CARE ENDOCRINOLOGY PRACTICE?

In conventional healthcare settings, the pressure to see a high volume of patients leads to rushed appointments, long wait times, and mediocre care. I sought to pioneer a practice offering extended consultations, minimal wait times, and direct access to me for patients. Alongside evidence-based medicine, visits often integrate lifestyle and holistic health approaches.

Northshore Endocrinology and Diabetes, located in Covington, Louisiana, stands as the premier direct care Endocrinology clinic in the region. Dr. Haggar and her team prioritize restoring the human touch to personalized medicine. They forge deep patientdoctor relationships, deliver accurate diagnoses, and tailor treatment plans for all types of endocrine disorders.

Come experience a fresh approach to specialized medicine, where your well-being is our top priority.

The transition has been remarkably smooth, thanks to the warm support of my predecessor Amy, our board of directors and members. MANDY GONZALES, THE ENERGY BEHIND VIBE SALON

WHAT INSPIRED VIBE SALON?

My journey into beauty began in a friend’s mom’s salon, where I discovered my passion for uplifting women. In 2010, I expanded my role in the beauty world, joining the Aveda Institute of Covington. Shifting from styling to teaching, I shared my expertise with aspiring stylists. Despite my success there, I missed the personal connections with clients. This inspired me to open Vibe Salon, a warm and welcoming space where everyone can be themselves.

HOW HAS THIS JOURNEY SHAPED YOU AS BOTH A STYLIST AND MENTOR IN BEAUTY?

I admit my journey’s had bumps. Like many, I’ve encountered moments of self-doubt. However, through perseverance and the support of others, I have learned the value of continual learning. Today, I mentor and befriend, guiding my team and clients through their beauty journeys.

ANY CLOSING THOUGHTS?

I urge aspiring stylists to seek mentorship, keep an open mind, and recognize that success goes beyond technical skills—it involves nurturing meaningful connections within both the industry and the community.

Unconventioal VenuesWedding

Say “I Do” at One of These Unconventional Northshore Venues

perhaps a traditional wedding venue is your cup of tea. Maybe it’s not. If you want to get a little fun and funky with the site of your nuptials, the Northshore offers a selection of nontraditional wedding venues. You can exchange vows at a brewery or tie the knot in a renovated barn. You can walk the aisle at your favorite art gallery or get hitched at your family hunting camp. Say "I do" at the wild and wacky Abita Mystery House, amid the oaks at Fontainebleau State Park, or on the shore of one of our beloved rivers. And check out this castle, polo farm, vineyard, nonprofit ministry, and hunting preserve we think are pretty darn cool.

Garrett Field Estancia in Slidell

What do you do when you inherit the family home place complete with a private airstrip? If you’re Gran and Billie Semmes, you turn the airstrip into a polo field and the family home into a showstopping event venue. Many a Slidell native grew up driving past the elegant home of Bill and Ruth Garrett. Built in 1960, it was the first all-electric home in the town. The Garretts built a mother-in-law cottage next door for Ruth’s mom, a pool, a large barn, a hangar for Bill’s planes, and an alley of oaks leading to the home. All of it and the 125 acres on which it sits are now available as the perfect setting for a less-thantraditional wedding.

“We turned the airplane hangar into an open-air pavilion, but we have custom sheeting we can drop down to close it in during cooler weather,” said Cher Levis, venue manager and, more importantly, Billie’s beloved niece. That sheeting comes in handy, during the cooler months, because the farm has a lovely breeze that sweeps across it year-round.

Here’s another venue that can accommodate the entire bridal party. “Often the bride and bridesmaids will get ready in the big house while the groomsmen hang around the tack room smoking cigars,” Levis said. “The home is also a B&B where the family can stay while the couple honeymoons right next door in the cottage. In fact, they can rent the entire property and stay the whole weekend. We comfortably sleep ten.”

There’s a lovely loft apartment above the barn the Semmes had constructed of repurposed lumber from a historic home on St. Charles Avenue. Another, smaller apartment in the former equipment shed is modeled after a gypsy caravan.

Weddings can take place inside the home, but most couples choose to marry à l'air frais, perhaps under the kissing oaks or on the chateau patio. Or for a little whimsy, the ceremony can take place on the banks of the Doubloon Bayou, which borders the property complete with a whimsical cast-iron dinosaur. After the ceremony, guests can grab a libation from one of the satellite bars, wander about, make friends with the 13 polo horses, snuggle up by the fireplace, sit by the pool, or on one of the polo-viewing courtyards, or even take a walk through the swamp and across a footbridge to a tiny private island.

The Venue at Covey Rise in Husser

Word is out and brides are flocking to the tiny town of Husser, Louisiana for a wedding that can last all weekend. They can host up to 400 people for a wedding day, as well as some overnight spaces to rent for a weekend experience. Begun in 1999 as an elite hunting preserve, Covey

Rise expanded to include a farm in 2009 providing produce to top New Orleans restaurants. Not long after that, they coaxed popular French Quarter chef Austin Kirzner to join the team, enabling them to open an event and wedding venue where the chef serves up farm-to-table cuisine with a distinctly New Orleans vibe.

A wedding at the 600-acre Covey Rise begins as you meander down a mile of wooded driveway. Once there, you’ll find photo ops around every corner including a beautiful four-acre pond and 50 acres of farm fields. Many brides choose to make an entire weekend of it, beginning with a rehearsal dinner on Friday night, followed by cocktails around the fire pit, stargazing and chatting until the wee hours. The families and bridal party can rent Covey Rise’s private cabins or stay together in the 45-bed lodge.

Saturday, as the bride and bridesmaids see to their hair and nails, the groom and his groomsmen can enjoy clay target shooting, fishing in the stocked ponds, yard games such as cornhole, or during hunting season, schedule a hunt. Many brides plan their wedding at sunset and choose to exchange vows under a century-old oak just behind the venue building.

The Venue and its elegant bar, The Wesley, lend themselves to a reception that flows indoors and out and because the main lodge is included in the venue rental, when the reception is over, the party can simply move next door. It’s no surprise The Venue at Covey Rise was chosen The Knot Best of Weddings by TheKnot.com and 2024 WeddingWire Couple’s Choice at WeddingWire.com.

Milićević Farm & Vineyard Venue in Abita Springs

St. Tammany is now home to a handful of family vineyards, and at least one of them is the perfect spot for a nontraditional wedding.

Milićević Farm & Vineyard Venue claims the title of largest private facility in the state of Louisiana, large enough, in fact, to accommodate a wedding of 900 guests. Most are more intimate though, coming in at around 150 friends and family members.

Owner Ivan Milićević grew up working in his family vineyards in Hercegovina, a country in the Western Balkan Peninsula of Europe. He relocated to this country in 1989 and, after finding success in business, decided it was time to continue the family tradition. Milićević began searching for the perfect spot for his own vineyard, eventually finding it in Abita Springs. He planted his first grapes there in 2015. The Louisiana climate was kind, and his vineyard thrived. In fact, the Blatina and Zilavka grapes he planted now exist only in Hercegovina and Abita Springs.

The 11 acres of vineyard, elegant grounds, and majestic structures have become a popular spot for weddings that are as sophisticated as they are fun. “Many people choose to be married in our back vineyard, which is only one acre, outside under the pergola, or in front of the fireplace beside the lake,” Milićević said. “And many take their engagement photos among the grapes.” The venue offers an in-house chef with a full kitchen plus 15,000 square feet inside if you’d rather hold festivities there.

Constructed of 85,000 bricks, Louisiana Castle has authentic themed details inside and out including suits of armor, medieval weaponry, and elaborate his and hers thrones for the bride and groom.

Dolly & Steve Illg purchased the castle from Dr. Belcher in 1999 and began hosting weddings and other events there in 1991. Although it can accommodate 350 guests, most of the castle weddings are more intimate, with 50 to 75 guests. The most popular—and dramatic—spot for the ceremony is at an outdoor altar alongside a small brook, with the bride

the property, around the lake, sit by the outdoor fireplace, or commune with the cows, geese, ducks, sheep, and donkeys that call the vineyard home.

Louisiana Castle in Franklinton

Talk about your fairytale wedding. Did you know you can get married at an authentic castle in South Louisiana? This beauty, built in 1983 by Dr. Mark Belcher, is a replica of an English Norman Keep Castle, a type of fortified tower built by European nobility.

descending 47 steps from the castle to her waiting groom. The castle grounds are meticulously landscaped, adding to the enchantment of the setting, and the venue lends itself to receptions inside or outside—or often a combination of the two.

The castle owns a cottage just down the road for the bride and bridesmaids to get ready. And often the bride and groom will make a “fake exit” from their reception only to return and spend the night upstairs in the honeymoon suite. “Once the guests leave, they have the run of the castle including use of our honeymoon hot tub,” said longtime castle manager Mary Thomas. “The caterer leaves food from the reception upstairs for them and ices down some champagne for them downstairs behind the bar.”

A popular way to get to and from a wedding or other event at the castle is on a party bus. “Bogue Chitto State Park is right down the road with cabins and a lodge that sleeps 52,” Thomas said. “For many of our weddings, guests will hire a party bus to bring them here then back to the park after the reception. Or the entire wedding party and their guests arrive together on a party bus from New Orleans. Then, the bus takes everybody back to the city after the reception, and they don’t have to worry about designated drivers.”

Lynhaven Event Center in Hammond

A truly memorable wedding will cost you a chunk of change. How nice would it be to know that money was doing good long after the “I dos” are uttered? Originally opened as a private women’s retreat center, Lynhaven, Inc. became so much more when it was purchased by the New Orleans Mission. It’s still a beautifully landscaped 18-acre and perfectly appointed site for weddings, corporate events, and more. But now all the profit from those events is poured back into a ministry that houses and trains women in crisis. The venue is managed by husband

and wife team David and Emilie Bottner, who open their lives and their hearts to women who come to Lynhaven to live, learn a trade, and eventually leave with a better sense of self-worth and with work and life skills.

The women whose lives have been affected by substance abuse, trafficking, or domestic abuse live for free in tidy, little cottages on the back of the property and spend their days in classes learning parenting, money management, how to obtain a home loan, and more. New Orleans Chef John Proctor teaches the women to cook, and they help him prepare the food that’s served at weddings and other events. They also learn to clean, set tables, make centerpieces, and serve the guests who attend functions, all skills they can use once they leave Lynhaven.

Lynhaven is popular for family reunions, school parties, company picnics, jazz brunches, showers, and birthday parties where guests can play putt-putt, basketball, volleyball, or fish in the stocked pond. As a wedding venue, it’s an elegant location that can accommodate 250 guests indoors and more than 1,500 on the grounds.

A pavilion overlooking the three-acre pond is a popular ceremony spot with chandeliers hung from the trees, their light reflecting on the water. During the reception, guests can stroll around the pond, settling on the benches scattered about the other side. Or they might grab a cocktail and take a ride across on a paddleboat. There’s a large room set aside for the bridal party to get ready, and because they limit the number of weddings they schedule, brides can arrive at 9 a.m. and stay all day.

If you’ve found the one whom your soul loves—and you want to have a little fun with the I-dos—you could do worse than one of these out-of-the-box locations for beginning your happily ever after.

GENEROUS HEARTS HIGHLIGHTING PHILANTHROPY

ON THE NORTHSHORE

Our partners at the Northshore Community Foundation exist to make it easy for each of us to make a difference in our own backyard. In their 18th year, the Foundation has touched over $80 million dollars in philanthropic fuel, focusing on simplifying, organizing, and magnifying philanthropy at every turn. The Foundation has reached those remarkable numbers through three primary ways. First, they engage hundreds of individuals, families, companies, and nonprofits in a membership model that promotes

Civic Leadership: Mental Health Matters

Studies show following a natural disaster, suicides increase by 41%. The Northshore Community Foundation, worked with National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - St. Tammany to offer FREE THERAPY to Northshore residents - connecting those with a licensed online therapist from anywhere, at any time, at no cost. The WellConnected program, launched post Hurricane Ida, successfully decreased that by 13%. Providing this easily accessible therapy catalyzed a significant positive change and surpassed expectations, demonstrating the power of community action.

active connections and charitable work. Secondly, they take the paperwork out of “doing good” by administering funds that act as charitable checkbooks for any purpose. Lastly, they step into big roles when the need is great – especially in times of disaster. Through these three unique and critical roles, the Northshore Community Foundation uses its expertise and resources to magnify the incredible charitable work so prevalent in our region. Below is a sample of the good people and projects that are changing lives every day on the Northshore.

Fund Management: Transfomative Impact

Opening a fund with the Foundation is your charitable checkbook, empowering you to support local nonprofits, scholarships, and community initiatives; allowing you to make a difference. NCF’s efforts in 2023 led to over $5.3 million in charitable distributions, 315 hours contributed by higher education students through foundation-administered scholarships, and more than 175 nonprofit leaders enriched through specialized opportunities.

Engaged Philanthropy: Celebrate Community – At NCF’s recent 2024 Annual Meeting, the room buzzed with more than 155 leaders and changemakers from across our four-parish region. Dorothy Garcia was announced as the recipient of the seventh annual Dick Knight Award. Her over 28 years of unwavering service in the nonprofit sector, exemplary servant leadership, and remarkable dedication to children's welfare showcase her deservingness to this award. Dorothy is truly an inspiration and blessing to our community.

EVERYONE IS A PHILANTHROPIST. TO LEARN HOW YOU CAN DO MORE IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD, REACH OUT TO THE FOUNDATION AT NORTHSHOREFOUNDATION.ORG

For the first time in a very long time, the Southeastern Louisiana University Family has a First Lady. Misty Wainwright officially joined the Family in June when her husband William was chosen as the university’s 15th president. At the time, it had been 15 years since a First Lady graced the Hammond campus and called it home.

“When we made the decision to seek the presidency, it was a family decision that we all made together,” said the Avoyelles Parish native who moved to the Northshore 20 years ago. “This isn’t a job for us; it’s full-time dedication to Southeastern and the communities it serves. And, we couldn’t love it more.”

When asked what the role of First Lady entails, Misty smiles, saying that’s something she and Southeastern are still determining day by day.

“When I attend events, people sometimes aren’t sure what to do with me,” she laughs. “Do I get introduced? Do I sit at the front? Do I say something? Let’s just say we’re figuring it out together.”

As the lead ambassador for Southeastern, she coordinates “moments in time” that embrace the myriad populations that make up the Southeastern Family: students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community supporters alike.

Misty Wainwright Southeastern Louisiana University’s First Lady

“When you introduce two people at a function, for example, you can possibly be setting the trajectory for a future interaction, conversation, or donation that can change the life of a student,” she says. “That’s so powerful and so important. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. I take it to heart.”

Not surprising for a nationally board-certified licensed professional counselor who is now able to channel her professional expertise into helping meet the needs of students. Misty earned her undergraduate degree in psychology at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. Classes for her master’s degree in student services and counseling in higher education were held in the same building as those for the adult and continuing education program, in which William happened to be enrolled. The rest, as they say, is history. Zachary was born in 2001, and Ella-Grace followed in 2005. The Northshore became home to the family of four while William led Northshore Technical and Community College and Misty led a demanding clinical practice.

Most recently, Misty was appointed in January to the State Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review Board, which collectively reviews pregnancy-related deaths in Louisiana and makes recommendations on what can be done to prevent such deaths in the future. She also recently participated in the National Day of Maternal Mental Health Advocacy by meeting with Sens. Cassidy and Kennedy’s offices to discuss federal funding for maternal mental health initiatives in the coming fiscal year.

Misty’s 25 years of professional practice also lend themselves well to student-centric endeavors on campus such as fine-tuning the SLU Food Pantry’s services for students, assisting with speaker panels to address the vital need for work-life balance after graduation, and providing advice, when requested, for the Student Counseling Center.

“When I first started meeting with students, coaches, faculty, and staff members, alumni and friends of Southeastern out in the business community, even before William was appointed, a topic that was consistently shared was a concern for food insecurity among students,” she said.

84 INSIDE NORTHSIDE FEATURE

Once on campus, she didn’t waste time convening a committee that started by defining the food pantry's purpose as a supplement to campus food options and not as a student grocery store. This brought about new food-type donation requests and new practices including standard record-keeping and expanded hours of operation, which were also called for by the committee.

Misty points to a wonderful partnership with campus food services provider Aramark that allows the pantry to also provide some student “card swipes” for meals on campus.

“While it’s great to give out boxes of mac-n-cheese, we realize it’s even better to provide nutritious meals,” she said. “We hope to encourage more monetary donations from the community so we can purchase more hot meals rather than just using that money to buy more boxes of mac-n-cheese. Of course, we’ll still gladly accept those boxes and other food items, too.”

Serving as a guest lecturer for senior nursing students is another way she has been able to fold her profession into her role as First Lady. “Women’s Perinatal Mental Health” was the topic she presented to students during their obstetrics rotations.

“I told them that when they’re out in the clinical setting and everyone is leaning toward a certain diagnosis, I want them to be that one person who says, ‘I heard a lecture once that makes me think this might be something different.’ It’s always good to approach things with different perspectives. That’s how you continue to learn and grow.”

How does Southeastern’s First Lady intend to keep learning and growing herself?

“With every interaction I have with our students, they impress me more and more,” she says, beaming. “I continue to be amazed by what they’re capable of accomplishing. I look forward to seeing what they’ll achieve next.”

For example, when she approached Student Government Association (SGA) members with the idea for a First Lady’s Tree Lighting Ceremony last fall, she says they took the idea and ran with it. They created an entire event with ice skating and a build-a-Roomie (SLU’s Lion mascot) experience for students to parallel the event that catered to the community and also wove into the university’s Presidential Investiture celebration.

“It was wonderful to see groups of students gathered throughout the Union enjoying the event and more importantly enjoying each other,” she said. “It was exactly what you’d want a family gathering to be.”

A favorite photo from that event was taken after a few seconds’ delay in the official lighting of the tree. “There was a slight moment of panic when it didn’t immediately light,” she says, grinning. “And then when it did, you can see the pure joy (and relief) captured in that photo!”

For those who didn’t make it to last year’s event, Misty assures everyone that the First Lady’s Tree Lighting Ceremony will be back for this year’s holiday season with a 2nd annual iteration.

She’s also already at work helping with preparations for Southeastern’s Centennial in 2025. “We want to build upon the fantastic array of events and activities that SLU hosts annually and make them even bigger and better in honor of the university’s 100-year legacy,” says the First Lady who knows a thing or two about campus events, having served as SGA president herself when she was at Northwestern.

“Ever since William was named president, I cannot tell you how many people in St. Tammany have told me that they graduated from Southeastern or that their children got their degrees here,” she said. “But they haven’t been back to campus since. We want to change that. Our hope is that the Centennial will provide everyone with an opportunity to come home to Southeastern so they can share in the pride that Southeastern so rightly instills in its alumni and supporters.”

As plans for that celebration ramp up, Misty says she feels right at home in Hammond. She says she realizes she still has a lot to learn, but that she’s loving every minute of it.

Some of the things she’s learned so far have been unexpected. For example, she invited the SLU Lab School kindergarten

MAY-JUNE 2024 85
SOUTHEASTERN'S NEW FIRST LADY

class to come read Christmas stories with her. The day the students were set to arrive she turned on some Kids Bop-type Christmas Music to play in the President’s Residence.

“It wasn’t until our neighbor Patsy Causey walked over that I found out there are speakers on the exterior of the residence,” she said. “Now I can’t wait for nice weather so we can host events on the grounds at President’s Residence, too.”

Also, when she first heard about there once having been a live lion mascot that stayed on campus, she thought people were telling her a tall tale.

“But I’ve now actually met several former students who helped transport the lion back and forth from the Audubon Zoo to its part-time home on campus,” Misty said with a chuckle. “There really was a live Roomie on campus!”

Laws for permanent mascots living on campus now only allow those that were grandfathered in years ago, so there won’t be any live lions making the move to Hammond.

“However, we do fully intend to bring alumni and friends of the university back to campus,” she said. “Whether you come back for a Centennial event, for a football game, as a guest lecturer, for the job fair, to mentor a student or any other way, we want to get everyone to come home to Southeastern.”

Southeastern First Lady Misty Wainwright is ready to welcome you home.
