The Healing Power of Animals by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger
Many of us find our best connection with Spirit/ Universe/God when we are outside in a natural setting such as a park or even our own backyard. By just being outside and allowing the connection to the Universe to naturally occur, healing of our minds, spirits and bodies can happen. In the same way, we can find healing and peace by simply sitting with our pets and connecting with them. This connection brings us closer to nature. It also allows the healing love of animals to flow through us. Have you ever been sitting on the floor or on your couch feeling down or tired, and had one of your pets quietly come and sit beside you or on your lap? Have you noticed that if you relax and just “be with them, that you begin to feel better? It is an amazing experience if you allow yourself to be open to their love. Our animals love us unconditionally, and they are very forgiving of our shortcomings. They naturally want to help us when we are sick or unhappy because of this unconditional love.

One of the more unique experiences I have had involves an iguana that lived with us for a time. Her name was Kazel. One day Terri was cleaning her cage and she asked me to watch Kazel. I was in the mood for a nap, so I laid down on the bed and put Kazel on the bed next to me. I promptly dozed off. When I awoke, she was lying on me with her head on my shoulder and her eyes closed. I guess she needed a nap too, but I also think she sensed that I needed to connect and feel her companionship. Often when I am sad or discouraged, I will go out and see my horse. I put her in her stall with some hay and sit in a chair in front of her stall opening. I just sit there quietly. She will at times come over and rest her head close to me and just hang out. Without fail I always feel at peace after sitting with her for a while. She loves and trusts me, and she holds space with me when I need that. Horses have such beautiful, healing energy.
