Pupils secure Innovation Award at VEX Robotics National Competition thanks to 1876 donation funds The VEX Robotics team enjoyed two successful days of competition in Telford, finishing sixth overall in the UK knockout stages. Their invention – 33363A, JL Vulcan – also won the international Lovelace Division Innovate Award for having the most effective and efficient overall design process. Competing against teams from across the UK at this level is no mean feat and this is a big highlight and achievement for the team – and for John Lyon as a whole!

D

uring the competition, the team faced various challenges, including a ‘grilling’ from the judges and the VEX IQ challenge, in which they paired up with another school. The John Lyon team showed remarkable composure and worked collaboratively throughout in all that they faced and were successful in securing a place in the competition finals. It was without a doubt an extremely competitive event and the team were extremely proud of where they finished. Opportunities such as this are a great way to help our pupils translate their theoretical learning into practice and we are grateful for the support of the 1876 Fund, which financed the robots and the competition fees.

“This was John Lyon’s first ever

competitive VEX Robotics season and taking part has far surpassed our expectations and what we thought we would achieve. Qualifying and participating in The VEX IQ Challenge UK National Championship 2022 has been an incredible honour and an amazing learning opportunity and experience for all of us.We hope to continue our journey through VRC and cannot wait to see what the new John Lyon VEX IQ team come up with!” Hemang K (9CEP) n
