RESTORING FILMS
Filmrestaurierung findet im Verborgenen statt, in den Werkstätten der Filmarchive und den Dunkelkammern der Kopierwerke. Die Ausstellung bringt dieses Handwerk ans Licht und zeigt, wie bekannte, aber auch vergessene Werke der Filmgeschichte bewahrt und für die Leinwand zurückerobert werden – und gemeinsam mit dem Filmmaterial auch Geschichten und Zeitzeugnisse für die Zukunft erhalten bleiben. In fünf Kapiteln wird beleuchtet, was zur Rettung der Filme alles dazugehört: von der weltweiten Suche nach Filmmaterialien über die Rekonstruktion früher Tonspuren bis hin zur Farbund Lichtbestimmung bei Technicolor-Filmen. Erleben Sie, wie aus Fragmenten wieder ein kompletter Film wird. Der geführte Besuch wird so zu einer Reise in die investigative Welt der Restaurierungsarbeit.
The exhibition pays homage to the complex and laborious work of film restoration in the service of preserving our collective visual memory. Extensive projections amidst a backdrop of the tools of the restoration trade, and interactive installations with a loupe and a light table will invite visitors to take a detailed look at the investigative work of film restoration. Five segments explore everything from the world-wide search for pieces of film to the reconstruction of early audio tracks, right up to colour grading and correction for Technicolor films. The exhibition follows the process of using segments of film from the temperature-controlled vaults of film archives and the darkrooms of film labs to rebuild a complete film. The guided tour invites you to discover the fascinating world of film restoration.
