With 5 trophies up for winning, plus nearest the pin in one and two plus the longest drive. The Nursery Today golf day is a fun golf day for all golfers good or very average (that’s me), all are welcome. The morning nine hole Texas Scramble begins the day, followed by lunch, The afternoon round includes the team four-ball BabyStyle trophy – a handsome trophy held for a year by the winning team and won in 2022 by CuddleCo. JMDA supply the trophy for our Yellow Ball competition won last year by BabyStyle. For the less gifted golfers we also have a cup for the 24-28 handicap golfers.
A barbeque for the presentation of trophies concludes the day and to keep the occasion as relaxed as possible the dress code is casual allowing those wanting to leave for home after the presentation a reasonably early evening journey, leaving those of us staying over able to discuss the day at the bar till closing time. Whilst most teams come as team four-balls, individual golfers are very welcome. Any team/player NOT staying for the presentation will not receive any prizes they might have won had they stayed.

Maxi-Cosi introduces the future of car seats to make parents’ daily life easier with SlideTech technology
So, here we are in the month of May – a month full of Bank Holiday weekends! I don’t think I personally I have ever experienced a time where we have had three Bank Holidays in one month.
Of course, one of these was to celebrate the Coronation of our new King. My own High Street where I live held its own Street Party and I have to say, it was incredibly well organised and I’m not sure that I have ever seen so many people before attending an event or our High Street so busy (not even at Christmas when locals gather for the turning on of the Christmas lights).
I’m sure for those shops who took this as an opportunity to secure additional footfall and sales, probably fared pretty well. For example, Pramland took the decision to close their doors on the Saturday and John Barker states in his article “I opted to close the Saturday of the Coronation but still open on the Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday as we normally would. I must admit, it was a difficult decision to make but I think I made the right one. Yes, we closed on our busiest trading day but the Sunday and Monday more than made up for it.” I would be interested to hear from you all about how you have found trade during this month. Why not drop me an email at penny@lemapublishing and tell me your own experiences?
This month we carry a host of features which takes a look at Tech products, Breast Pumps & Accessories, Changing Bags plus Strollers and we also shine the spotlight on Plush products.
You will also find our Cover Story over on page 10 where Maxi-Cosi introduce their newly launched 360 Pro Family: a unique range of comfortable, ergonomic car seat solutions that can both rotate and slide towards parents, thanks to Maxi-Cosi’s revolutionary SlideTech technology. secure children safely and comfortably in the car, 360 Pro Family sets a new standard in car seat innovation. While on the subject of car seats – let’s not forget that Nuna also made an impact with their newly launched PIPA urbn which also raised the bar in the car seat sector. Their PIPA urbn is the only baseless infant car seat with a built-in ISOFIX system that is seamlessly integrated into the car seat, enabling it to install in seconds into taxis and cars and weighs in at an ultralight 3.3 kg. The PIPA urbn is super-portable and features a one-handed vehicle and pushchair release for effortless transfers, making it a most genius way of travelling around town with baby.
This month we also had the pleasure to catch up with the team at Babyland Cheltenham. As an independent retailer since the 60’s, this family run business has certainly seen changes in the nursery landscape over the years. As they state within the article “The landscape for nursery retail has changed and expanded greatly over the years, hundreds of brands have popped up and everyone is trying their best to bring new designs to the table. Customers have never had so much choice when it comes to travel systems, with bigger and better aesthetics, ease of use, and storage saving.” Simply turn to page 12 to read more.
Talking of retail, Jolly Tots Managing Director Lorretta Owen also takes the time to give her thoughts on the stroller market on our Retailer Opinion page (also a subject touched on by John Barker). You can read her views over on page 37.
Finally, can I also bring to everyone’s attention that The Baby Products Association will be running their first face-to-face AGM for several years after covid disruptions, last year’s meeting had no option but to go virtual due to train strikes. This is due to be a great networking event for 2023 and with some informative speakers. The AGM is set to be held in Central London on Tuesday 20th June. As an example, one ‘hot topic’ on the agenda will be car seats. The law with regards to children’s car seats is complex and has become
even more so since Brexit. Luke Burns, General Manager, CYBEX is a car seat expert and will make a presentation to help you navigate through this and provide a better understanding of the requirements in Europe and how these differ in Great Britain. This will be followed by a Q&A session to ensure you have all the facts you need. For further information, or to become a member of The Baby Products Association, visit www.b-p-a.org or email Christine Scippo to find out how you can secure your space at this event on info@k-communications.co.uk
You’ll find a host of strollers available to order now by simply turning to page 38.

Green Sheep Group, one of the leaders in baby bedtime products, has been awarded the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade. The award is the second Royal recognition for the business, following The Queen’s Award for Innovation which was granted in 2018.
Roger Allen, Chief Executive of Green Sheep Group commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be recognised with this prestigious award specifically for our endeavours in International Trade. When we started out, we were solely a UK-based company with just UK customers. However, as our product range grew and we launched new innovations, the opportunity for international expansion was evident and six years on, we have grown from selling to retailers in six countries, to selling on a wholesale basis to retailers in 30 countries. Adding in direct consumer customers, we now export to 45 countries around the world.
“The King’s Award is highly regarded on both a national and international platform and will have a significant impact on the future of our business. I am so proud of our team and all the work they put into the business – this is their award. Over the past three years our turnover has grown by 142% and our international sales by over 198%, and our Queen’s Award in 2018 undoubtably contributed to our overall success. We have restructured our entire sales operation to better support our valued UK partners. And we can now move forward with further investments in International. The timing of our Award is outstanding news.”

Dream drape™ Luxe leatherette carry handle Integrated ISOFIX connectors XL peek-a-boo window One-handed vehicle and pushchair release Removable UPF 50+ canopy Side and rear belt guidesWhilst online shopping is on the rise (as many as 8 in 10 parents buy online), there will always be a place for physical stores – especially when it comes to the nursery industry, as we know parents-to-be value the in-store experience. We often find that buying items for their new arrival is seen as an experience with friends and family joining for a shopping day; they may well visit multiple stores as part of their discovery and decision process.
It’s absolutely true that retailers play a vital part in supporting parents-to-be in making decisions. With such important and for many, first-time purchases, they not only want to be able to touch and feel the product but will benefit from in depth demos from someone with good knowledge of the product, they also feel comforted by being able to ask questions. With so many products on the market, the advice consumers receive in store helps them feel reassured that the products they choose are going to be the very best in term of safety and function - for them and for baby.
I firmly believe that for brand and retailer success, there needs to be a true partnership approach where the brand & retailer are using their respective strengths to support one another - this is the founding principle of our new retailer Retailer Rewards Programme, not only will it enable us to work more closely and collaboratively, but it will also empower our retailers to become our brand ambassadors.
Above all, parents-to-be value functionality and reliability when buying for baby, retailers are uniquely placed to offer a face-to-face experience and a high street presence that is reassuring. Pair this with a reputable brand image and award-winning product and that leads to a powerful combination creating credibility for both retailer and brand.

Cheltenham. Here they tell us more about their family run independent nursery store which has been trading for more than 60 years.
Tell us a little about the store – when did you first open your doors?
We first opened our doors in 1904 as Williams & Co: a cycle shop, alongside motorcycles. A toy shop and nursery and baby items department came in around 1961; selling pushchairs, seats, high chairs and toys. The company also took on car dealerships with Fiat and Volvo. We have always been family-run and situated in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
How have you established yourselves as the ‘go to’ nursery retailer in your area?
As the longest running local familyowned and family-run baby store in Gloucestershire, we pride ourselves on our customer loyalty and reputation for great customer service. We host a relaxed shopping experience and are never hard-sales based; our customers always appreciate this and the feedback we receive always reassures us too. Our personal touch also sets us apart from other retailers: we train all of our staff to the fullest extent, so we have no need for high-tech tablets to clarify product details, and allows us to have no barriers between us and our customers.
What are you currently doing as a store that sets you apart from your competitors?
We offer a personalised shopping experience for each and every one of our customers; all members of our team are highly trained, and we tailor our product knowledge to each customers individual lifestyle to find their perfect pram. We know one style does not fit all, so we host multiple brands for the best choice selection for our customers – we know 12 nursery today
we have one of the widest selections of pushchairs in our county, which is something we are very proud of!
By being a family-run business we operate under our own family values, so our customers can rely on us for trustworthiness, transparency and honesty when it comes to their shopping experience and even product and customer aftercare. Our oldfashioned family superstitions also holds us apart from our competitors: superstitions such as not having prams in the house, encouraged us to offer storage for all pushchair orders until collection is needed; which is a polar opposite to most of our competitors who require customers to take their products straight away.
As a business, how have you grown over the years?
Since 1904 there have been many changes, one of the biggest changes came in the 60’s when the Williams family decided to branch out into separate shops for nursery and cycles due to an increase in business for the baby side. Ever since, we have been expanding the range of products available and increasing the showroom area as more and more brands become available. We now have excellent displays for our ranges and attract customers from far and wide.
Over the years, what has been your largest challenge and also what has been your biggest success?
As we are a small independent instore-only business, our biggest challenge is competing with online retailers and their prices. As we do not have access to any big warehouses, we
stock what we can and will also place special orders for our customers. Although it is often deemed a challenge, we see it as a success too: this system makes every order a special occasion for our customers, and it is often an event where the whole family gets involved. By not having a huge presence online yet, we rely heavily on word-of-mouth advertising for our store, which we have discovered can be very powerful, as we are still here today! You have been trading for many years, do you feel that the Nursery retail landscape has changed dramatically over time?
The landscape for nursery retail has changed and expanded greatly over the years, hundreds of brands have popped up and everyone is trying their best to bring new designs to the table. Customers have never had so much choice when it comes to travel systems, with bigger and better aesthetics, ease of use, and storage saving. It seems gone are the days where you only had 5 prams choices with 5 colour options from classics like Marmot or Wilson. The biggest change has come with all the regulations and new standards for the modern pram systems and car seats. You specialize in prams, car seats and furniture – do you feel you might onboard other nursery products in the future?
We have done a range of other products in the past such as wooden toys, highchairs, and bathing items; but now we stick to the main hardware of baby products. Despite this, we have just started to keep a larger selection of baby carriers and plan to start meetings
with local groups to help even more people in our community safely transport their children. Which product category do you experience the highest demand for in your area?
We experience a high demand for car seats and prams but the main thing we are seeing and hearing more often is that customers are more aware of rotating car seats. Ever since the release of the Cybex Cloud Z a few years ago, more and more brands are putting their design effort into things that make life easier, and this is certainly becoming a must-have for many parents-to-be. Your store has two floors – how do you manage your floor space to ensure your customers have the best experience when shopping for nursery products?
By having two floors, we have the ability to display full furniture sets on the upper level giving even more space downstairs for our prams, accessories and car seat displays. We are also trained to offer car seat fitting services for our customers.
Are your customers brand focussed and how important are brand names to your business?
As we don’t push customers to particular products unless it suits their needs better, we try to stay as neutral as possible when it comes to brands. However, a lot of people will still come in for the classic brands that their parents might have had, such as Silver Cross, along with the social media presence of influencers nowadays that advertise brands like iCandy, we get customers coming in specifically as their
favourite social media stars have got it or had pictures of it.
Are your customers seeking products that carry some level of eco-credentials?
We’ve seen a rise in more eco-friendly products from lots of our brands, so there’s more availability and choice when it comes to being eco-conscious. We don’t necessarily see more customers asking for eco-credentials, but we see more availability for sure. This ranges from strollers being made from recycled plastic bottles, to car seats made from recycled fabrics. How do you keep abreast of new products that might be of interest to your customers?
Every year we attend the Harrogate International Nursery Fair which showcases up-and-coming products, and where we carefully select new brands and products to stock that would be of interest to our customers.
Our subscription to Nursery Today also gives us a helping hand in staying up to date with new product launches and successes from other stores.
Have you spotted any current consumer buying trends, or see any emerging trends on the horizon?
Our most noticeable trend at the moment is the mix-and-matching of brands when it comes to travel systems.
As a small independent we’re able to offer even more choices when it comes to our customers picking a pushchair and car seat, and we’re seeing an increase in customers wanting rotating or reclining car seats with their pram bundles. Do you feel that we have sufficient innovation and new product launches within our industry?
Within the last decade there have been huge developments within our industry, and even more so within the last few years. We’ve seen the biggest developments in innovation through car seats and car seat safety: infant carriers with built-in isofix points; fully reclining and rotating car seats, and a higher safety standard all round. Travel systems have also noticeably developed, we now stock a great selection of travel approved strollers, and strollers which are overhead compartment and airline compatible. You have great parking facilities outside the store, what benefits does this bring to the business?
We have a forecourt on the front of our store which allows us to effectively carry out car seat fitting checks – this is a popular service we offer all of our customers, which gives everyone peace of mind before placing an order and gives parents-to-be another opportunity to try out the car seat’s features before committing. Our
forecourt parking is completely free, so our customers are not under any time pressures when visiting our store; there is also a large pay-and-display car park behind our store, for customers wanting to spend time around Cheltenham town after their visit to us. Both of these parking sites allow us to further help our customers with a carry-to-car service after purchase.
With this being an incredibly emotive industry sector, how do you give your customers reassurance when placing orders with you?
We have been trading as Babyland since the sixties, and have strong relationships with all of our suppliers, such as Silver Cross who we have been stockists for since 1961. Being a family-run independent store we are very friendly with our suppliers and go out of our way to build new relationships with new brands too. We are the only family-run independent pram and baby store in Gloucestershire and the surrounding area, our local community recognise our name and we have a strong reputation for our excellent customer service. Our customer loyalty is second to none, and we pride ourselves with serving different generations of the same families. Do you operate on social media and
if so, what benefits does this bring to the business?
Our Facebook and Instagram accounts are invaluable to our success as a growing independent business and keeping up with our customer’s needs. Social media is one of our greatest tools in attracting and reaching new customers, building customer loyalty, as well as generating customer feedback. Our social media platforms allow us to divert traffic to our brand new website, which in turn helps us to improve our search engine ranking too. A presence online is so important in keeping up-to-date on developments both in-store and among our competitors! Finally, is there any exciting news on the horizon that you would like to share with our readers?
We are very excited with the direction of Babyland Cheltenham at the moment with big things on the horizon! We are currently building relationships with new brands, as well as building a bigger team of staff with more instore training and development opportunities. We are expanding our product groups and have even secured a partnership with Cuddle Co., for bigger and better displays for our loyal customers.
The incorporation of technology in baby products is transforming the industry, and many brands are jumping on board to offer innovative solutions to new parents.
There are several reasons why parents are now looking for technology in baby products. Technology offers convenience and ease of use. Parents want products that make their lives easier, and tech-enabled products provide just that. For example, smart baby monitors that offer remote viewing capabilities or alert parents when the baby is crying, give peace of mind to parents and make it easier for them to manage their daily routines.
VTech’s Joel Lucy told us why he feels tech is becoming more popular within nursery products. “Considering the improvements in our lifestyle over the last few decades, it has also been vital for tech to make inroads into our home nursery. Parenthood is a very important and demanding phase for parents, especially first timers. Nursery technology helps in improving and maintaining parent’s daily life by helping keep tabs on their growing baby on a regular basis.” Matt Dyson, co-founder at baby sleep tech company Rockit feels the rise in popularity is perhaps down to two things commenting “Firstly, new mums and dads are much more tech savvy than previous generations, so the demand is growing for tech enable devices. Secondly brands are spending more on R&D to give their products the edge over competitors. This often results in tech based or tech enhanced solutions being brought to market in the search for market share.”
Parents are also always concerned about the safety of their babies, and with technology, they can have extra security. For example, car seats with built-in sensors that alert parents if their baby is not properly strapped in, or baby thermometers that can accurately measure the baby’s temperature without the need for physical contact.
Technology can also improve tracking and monitoring. For example, parents can use apps and devices to track their baby’s feeding, sleeping, and growth patterns, which can help them identify any issues early on.
The involvement of dads in the purchase of baby products has also increased, and they too appreciate the incorporation of technology in baby products. Dads are more involved in parenting today than ever before, and they want products that make their lives easier and offer convenience. Technology-enabled products provide just that.
We asked Matt If a product has a tech aspect, does he
feel that dads become more involved in the purchasing decision? “We have certainly found that the tech aspect of our Rockit products appeal to dads and gets them more involved in the purchasing decision. We often talk to dads at the consumer shows and they are certainly engaged and keen to find out how the products work as well as the benefits they provide.”
Nursery brands are now also looking at innovation in baby products, and many are investing in research and development to offer products that are unique and provide value to parents. Brands are now incorporating technology in their product offerings to differentiate themselves from their competitors and provide parents with innovative solutions that meet their needs. Are products that have an element of technology now something that parents search for when seeking items for their infants? Joel feels due to lifestyle tech is now becoming much higher on the buying decision of the parent “The modern day parent will search for devices with technology and apps as they have inherent higher benefits. This in part is also due to the change in lifestyles
and high usage of mobiles and other computer devices which has created this need to have technology in many areas of our daily lives.”
Will we experience more products in the nursery sector emerging with tech features? “This trend isn’t going to disappear, especially as the cost of new technologies fall and they then become more widely adopted.” Said Matt. “That said, it is important that brands like Rockit don’t adopt a technology for technologies sake mindset and lose sight of what the consumer really wants and needs.”
The use of technology is transforming the baby products industry, and parents are increasingly seeking tech-savvy products that offer convenience, safety, and improved tracking and monitoring. The incorporation of technology in baby products has also increased the involvement of dads in the purchase of baby products, and nursery brands are now investing in innovation to offer unique products that provide value to parents. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect more innovative solutions that will transform the parenting journey for the better.

The story of Mary Meyer began in 1904. Mary Meyer was born Mary Lorang in New York City. When she was a little girl, she learned how to sew from her mother.
When Mary was 24, she met her husband, Hans Meyer, their first sales representative. They fell in love and, within a year, were married. Hans and Mary began to think about producing and selling Mary’s best toys. This was just about the time the Great Depression hit. No one thought this would be a good time to start a business, but this did not stop Mary or Hans. They created what is today, Mary Meyer.
Tired of city life Mary and Hans moved to rural Vermont. Many residents through the years and generations of families in the valley worked for the business, which led to Mary Meyer’s success.
Ninety years later, they are still a family-owned and run business that involves five generations of the family with four of Mary’s grandsons at the helm, located just a couple miles from the Meyer family home and original factory. The team are proud to continue Mary’s mission to make beautiful toys that continue to bring joy to children and families worldwide with care, quality, integrity, and love.
Their products are known for their exceptional quality and design, which have made them a favourite among parents and children alike.
Mary Meyer’s product range includes a variety of plush toys, such as stuffed animals and puppets. They also produce baby products like blankets, rattles, and teethers. All of their products are made with the utmost care and attention to detail, ensuring that they are safe, durable, and enjoyable for children of all ages.
Another aspect that sets Mary Meyer apart is their focus on safety. All of their products undergo rigorous testing to ensure that they meet or exceed all safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This includes testing for choking hazards, flammability, and other potential hazards.
Mary Meyer’s products are designed with children in mind, incorporating features that stimulate their senses and encourage learning and development. For example, their plush toys often have different textures and materials, allowing children to explore and develop their sense of touch and some of their toys also come with interactive features, such as sound or motion, which help to keep children engaged and entertained.
Overall, Mary Meyer is a company that is dedicated to producing high-quality, safe, and sustainable products for children. Their commitment to excellence and their focus on child development have made them a trusted brand among parents and a favourite among children for over 90 years.
Pramland’s John Barker takes a look back at trade during April and the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend together with a look at strollers and how they perform within his store.
Hello everyone and welcome to May! Can you believe that we have three bank holiday weekends this month? It seems crazy to me, why not just tweak one of them to incorporate the Coronation event? Speaking of the Coronation, I noticed lots of chatter between stores regarding who will and who won’t be opening. I opted to close the Saturday of the coronation but still open on the Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday as we normally would. I must admit, it was a difficult decision to make but I think I made the right one. Yes we closed on our busiest trading day but the Sunday and Monday more than made up for it so happy days I guess.
The last few weeks have been manically busy in the store which has been a pleasant surprise and it wasn’t expected. I had assumed that April would continue the trend of 2023 with a slight downturn over 2022, but this was most definitely not the case. We ended April on a record month which was no doubt helped by underachieving on previous months and a rather special new product launch.
Yes! The rather fabulous new

Maxi-Cosi Pro Family has finally been unveiled and the secret is finally out. . . .and what a response we’ve seen. To be fair it was very apparent to me that it would be a huge success, but I have still been blown away by the immediate demand. Maxi-Cosi have really hit the mark with the pro family. Not only does it feature the lay flat position we’ve all been demanding but they kept their usual ventilation, side impact protection and easy in harness at the party too - but then they’ve gone and blown the party up with Slide-Tech. Such a simple idea, yet an idea that really is revolutionary. I said it last month and I’ll say it again – CONGRATULATIONS MAXI-COSI!
This month I have mainly been pondering over what I like to call the “stroller quandary”. What’s that I hear you ask, well let me enlighten you. It’s the phenomenon that we have all experienced and that is guaranteed to wind you up every week. On an average Saturday or Sunday we are flat out busy all morning and early afternoon, then at about 3pm all we seem to contend with is parents shopping for strollers. Stroller shoppers are a unique breed. They take hours and test every stroller in your store
looking for something that either doesn’t exist or if it does it’s four times the price they are prepared to pay. Yes, the “Stroller Quandary” is the age-old question of – is it worth selling strollers or is it easier to simply make it someone else’s problem?
I would say we have a good offering of strollers (about 22 different ones to pick from – all with various colour options) with a wide variety of prices from £89 to £400+. I would hand on heart say we have something for everyone. When I consider that a parent can eat up one of my teams time for an hour on a Saturday afternoon I often wonder if it’s worth
having them. That same member of staff could have been speaking to someone looking to spend £1000+ on a travel system or furniture set. 8 or 9 times out of 10 the parent (see how I refuse to use the word customer? A customer is some one that spends money!) simply takes up our time and leaves claiming they will “think about it” and they invariably never return. I don’t think this is down to lack of range or price options. I personally believe that I could take everything out of my 4,500 sq ft store and only have strollers - every stroller from every brand – and we’d still not sell any.
This month I have mainly been pondering over what I like to call the “stroller quandary”. What’s that I hear you ask, well let me enlighten you. It’s the phenomenon that we have all experienced and that is guaranteed to wind you up every week
Our strollers are displayed together at the front of the store. This display is two tiered and is approximately 6 metres in length. When I consider how much money that same area could earn me if it was occupied by travel systems it really makes me resent strollers even more. Lets say we live in a dream world where we can earn 30% on everything we sell. On a £1000 travel system we would have a cash margin of £300. To make this £300 off the back of strollers (averaging at £150 each) we would need to sell almost 7 strollers. Do I sell a ratio of this currently? 7 strollers to every travel system. . .. Absolutely not. Ok, so if I stop selling strollers and it doesn’t equate to increased travel system sales will that be the end of Pramland? It’s unlikely given that I’d have to not sell 7 to miss out on £300!
So, what’s the solution? Who knows. As a nursery store that’s been around for a long time we’ve stepped away from items that no longer make financial sense to sell but strollers are a big sector. Someone somewhere must be selling these to parents. Don’t get me wrong, we have some good sellers but even these represent such a small part of what we do. I hate the idea of not being able to accommodate parents looking for
strollers but as I’ve said above it simply makes poor financial sense to sell them. There must be a happy medium – a good mixture of a small, curated range which meets the requirements of the majority. A range big enough to still entice parents in but not big enough that they end up unable to decide.
I’d love to hear your feedback. I know this can’t be a phenomenon exclusive to me! It’s something we used to see many years ago with car seats. We tried to be everything to everyone, and it meant we ended up dedicating too much room and money in stock for little
returns. We trimmed the range down and now it’s a small yet concise range which should meet the requirements of the many –and off the back of this we do very well with a number of seats, and I certainly don’t see the same levels of time wasting.

In the early days, breast pumps were simple devices that used manual suction to express milk from the breast. These devices were typically used by working mothers who needed to store milk for their babies while they were away. However, they were often uncomfortable and time-consuming to use.
Over time, breast pumps have evolved to become more efficient and user-friendly. Today, there are three main types of breast pumps: manual, electric, and battery-operated. Manual pumps are ideal for occasional use, while electric and battery-operated pumps are better for frequent or daily use.
One of the main benefits of breast pumps is that they allow mothers to provide their babies with breast milk even when they are unable to breastfeed directly. This can be particularly useful for working mothers who need to be away from their babies for extended periods or for mothers who have difficulty breastfeeding for medical reasons.
Breast pumps also offer several other benefits. For example, they can help to relieve engorgement and prevent mastitis, a painful breast infection that can occur when milk is not adequately drained from the breast. They can also help to increase milk supply by stimulating milk production.
Another great example for mothers who choose to use a breast pump is that these also enable dads to be more involved during feeding times, giving dads further opportunities to also be able to bond with their infants.
By stocking a range of breast pump models and accessories, retailers can attract a wider range of customers and cater to different needs and budgets. As a retailer, you can also offer advice and support to customers on choosing the best breast pump for your customer’s needs and provide information on how to use and maintain the pump.
Retailers who offer a range of models and accessories can provide support and advice to customers, retailers can help to meet the needs of breastfeeding mothers and improve the overall breastfeeding experience for both mothers and babies.

Nursery Today caught up with Fraupow’s Founder, Sunita Boyes to find out how breast pumps have evolved over time with the addition of the game changing wearable pump.
How have breast pumps evolved over time to become more efficient and userfriendly?
Wearable electric breast pumps exploded onto the market within the last decade. As in many parts of life, wearable tech has proven to be a game-changer in breastfeeding, as it allows Mums to express milk whilst getting on with life. Wearable breast pumps eliminate many of the pain points of wired pumps, but the leading brands have been prohibitively priced, positioning the technology as a luxury accessory. With the introduction of the Fraupow Wearable Breast Pump, we have led the way in offering Mums the same convenience and comfort at a much more affordable price point, making it accessible to a much wider group of customers.
Has innovation been key within this particular product category?
Innovation is absolutely key to the breast pump category. Breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world and requires no tech, but we can aim to improve upon the experience mum and baby have by identifying the challenges that come with expressing and breastfeeding and using the latest technology to overcome these challenges.
What are the main benefits associated to those who opt for a breast pump?
Mums may choose to use a breast pump because they are separated from their baby in the hospital, because their baby has a latch problem, because they are working and away from baby, to stimulate an increase in their supply, to store up a stash of milk in the freezer for future use or just because they want the option of baby drinking milk from a bottle and shared feeds.
Are breast pumps classed as an ‘essential’ item for breastfeeding mothers?
Breast pumps can be a luxury ‘nice to have’ item for some Mums and an essential for others. It all depends on how they choose to feed their baby and whether they are able to breastfeed directly should they wish to.
For Mums who find breastfeeding straightforward a breast pump can be a nice additional bit of kit to use when they want to express – e.g. if they are going for a night away from baby. But there are also many Mums who wish to feed their baby their own milk but can’t feed them directly - for these Mums a breast pump is essential.
Fraupow offers a breast pump for every circumstance, with an affordable range of both electric and non-electric pumps to meet all needs. We aim to support every Mum, whether they want a ‘once in a blue moon’ pump or an ‘every last drop everyday’ pump.
Is this a product category which is researched online prior to purchase?
Feeding is a big area of concern before (and after!) a baby arrives so it is a topic that is thoroughly researched. At Fraupow we offer support during pregnancy and throughout the first year with our free midwife support service. Parents can speak to a qualified midwife, free of charge, to answer their questions about feeding and all other aspects of baby care.
Offering the midwife support service helps us to reach parents during that research journey and ensure they are familiar with and trust in the Fraupow brand. What benefits can retailers expect by stocking these in-store or online?
Retailers stock the Fraupow range because it meets the needs of the shopper who wants practical features and long-lasting quality, at an affordable price point. With its free midwife support, multiple awards, celebrity endorsement, great reviews and price ticket of less than £100 the Fraupow Wearable Pump draws customers in and ensures a quicker and easier conversion than similar products priced at over £200, which are hard to commit to when bills are soaring with no end in sight.
Breast pumps enable mothers to express milk from their breasts, either for feeding their babies or for storing for later use. Over the years, breast pumps have undergone significant innovation, resulting in a wide range of models with different features and capabilities.

Together with its super-soft silicone breast cup and flexcone, provides gentle cushioning around the breast. This allows the pump to mimic the suckling action of baby and provide a natural feeling and effective breast milk expression. The two phases have nine different speed settings for ultimate control, meaning that mum can tailor the experience to her without compromising on comfort. Nursery Today caught up with Lansinoh’s Associate Director, Product Development, Tom McCausland to find out his thoughts on how breast pumps have evolved over time when we look at breast pumps.
How have breast pumps evolved over time to become more efficient and user-friendly?
First breast pumps were first restricted to hospital use only. The emergence of pumps that allow women to pump effectively at home are a relatively recent concept, with the first powered pumps being made available for mums to purchase in the 1990’s. Today, hospital grade breast pumps are more efficient, priced accessibly and comfortable to use with the latest pumps now being wire and tube free allowing mum to pump handsfree.
Are breast pumps classed as an ‘essential’ item for breastfeeding mothers?
We know that a huge amount of mothers believe that pumping is a part of breastfeeding. A breast pump is a tool that can really support mums during their breastfeeding journey, and they do class it as an essential item when getting ready for baby to arrive.
Is this a product category which is researched online prior to purchase?
As good, effective breast pumps tend to be an investment – with mums spending over £150, a good amount of research is undertaken before purchasing – and we know through research that this tends to be before birth so they have it ready when they need it.
Does social media assist when we look at the various pumps available and give invaluable information for correct use?
Social media is an incredible tool for new mums to discover items such as breast pumps, as well as providing ‘real life’ insight into how mums are feeling during this challenging time in their lives. We’re also seeing an increase in expert profiles on social media – including doulas and lactation consultants who can provide great advice to women who need it.
What benefits can retailers expect by stocking these in-store or online
Providing mums with a choice of feeding support products means they become more confident in their decision to breastfeed or pump, or do both. Add on products are also available, with milk storage bags and feeding bottles also included in the range providing upsell opportunities. Breast pumps are often items added to a baby wish lists, so retailers who run these types of services are able to provide parents to be with a comprehensive range –alongside nursery furniture, wheels and car safety.

Show Organiser, Adrian Sneyd told Nursery Today “Exhibition and conference space is at a premium everywhere around the Autumn time and Harrogate Conference Centre is no exception.
“We’re lucky to have the use of our new 5th hall to be able to expand the show this year since we have filled 4 halls already, so exhibitors who are wanting to be part of the event should take advantage of getting in early to secure their location in Hall Q whilst there are stand spaces available.”
CuddleCo are one such company who have decided to rebook their stand space, with their Managing Director, Marc Kelly having expressed last year to Nursery Today after the 2022 event how the show went for them stating “Well, firstly, it exceeded our expectations. Everything from how busy the show was to the showmanship across the halls contributed to the brilliant atmosphere among the stands.
“It was great to be back at Harrogate and to finally be able to share our latest products. The excitement surrounding our new ranges was better than we could have imagined, and it really confirmed to myself and the team that all the hard work we’d put into the launch was worth it.”
Dorel also expressed their enthusiasm for the show last year with their Field Marketeer, Nicola Coletti previously commenting on the 2022 event saying “We had a busy stand with back-to-back retailer and press appointments, which allowed us to showcase both new and much-loved products to
everyone. We always love seeing our customers, industry press and spending time together discussing our portfolio.”
The positivity from exhibitors last year kept flowing with Joie’s Head of Product Management, Damon Marriott informing Nursery Today “The overall impression we were getting from colleagues and visitors was that the show was very well received. Attendance levels were good and there was a lot of interest in our newly launched items – we certainly took a lot of orders.” While BabyStyle also confirmed a great 2022 show with their Managing Director, Andy Crane speaking on the upbeat feel of the event “I was very pleasantly surprised with how upbeat the overall feeling was at the show, orders were very good, and retailers seemed to have made enough time to really look at everything on offer.”
Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair is set to ‘tick all the right boxes’ for both exhibitors and visitors to the show in October, with Adrian adding “Now the fair is firmly entrenched in its preferred October time slot there seems to be a growing commitment from exhibitors to support more local and national shows and also to help visitors with less travelling. This not only minimises the carbon footprint effect but also reduces their time away so whilst a UK trade event can never acclaim to be the size of any big international show, it does tick a lot of the boxes on where brands believe they need to be currently.”
One of the primary benefits of exhibiting at our only UK nursery trade exhibition is the opportunity to reach a highly targeted audience. Harrogate Int.
Nursery Fair attracts many retailers who specialise in this market sector and who are looking for new products to add to their inventory (which was also confirmed as an international show demonstrated by the many visitors who travelled from abroad to attend!).
By exhibiting at this event, brands can connect with potential customers who are already interested in their products and services, while new entrants to the nursery sector can gain invaluable advice from like-minded professionals together with increasing awareness to their new product ranges or if testing the market, simply source feedback from visitors. This can lead to increased sales and business opportunities, as well as new partnerships and collaborations.
Another important benefit of exhibiting at the Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair is the opportunity to showcase new products and services. This event often features new product launches and demonstrations, giving brands the chance to showcase their latest innovations and gain feedback from industry professionals. This can be especially important for companies looking to expand their market share or introduce new products to the market.
In addition to showcasing products and services, our only UK nursery trade exhibition also offers excellent networking opportunities for brands within a friendly environment. This can help to increase brand awareness and reputation, as well as create new business opportunities for the future.
For those who visit Harrogate, the benefits are equally significant. By visiting the Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair, you can gain the opportunity to see upcoming trends in the market and invaluable insight into new product launches. This can help
you to stay ahead of the competition and offer your customers the latest and most innovative products currently available in the industry. By staying up-to-date with the latest trends and innovations, as a retailer you can ensure that you are always offering the best products and services to your customers.
Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair is also the home to the coveted BANTA’s (sponsored by Nursery Today) plus the Concept & Innovation Awards – by visiting you will have the opportunity to view first hand all the winners within the show halls!
In addition, visiting this exhibition can provide you with the chance to meet and network with other professionals in the industry. By connecting with other retailers and brands, this can also offer valuable insights into the market, as well as potential new partnerships and collaborations.
Of course, let’s not forget the importance of upcoming trends – Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair often gives an insight into colourways, fabrics and much more that might become the must-haves for the upcoming year!
The benefits of exhibiting or visiting our only UK nursery trade exhibition in October is extremely clear. For brands, this event offers a unique opportunity to reach a targeted audience, showcase new products, and connect with other professionals in the industry. For retailers, attending this event can provide valuable insights into the market, as well as the opportunity to network with other professionals and stay ahead of the competition.
In terms of importance, exhibiting and attending the only UK nursery trade exhibition is crucial for businesses in the nursery, baby and toddler product industry. Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair provides a platform for companies to showcase their products and services, gain exposure, and connect with potential customers and partners. It also offers a chance for retailers to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and innovations in the market, ensuring that businesses are always offering the most relevant and cutting-edge products to their customers.
If you haven’t already booked your space to exhibit, contact Adrian Sneyd on +44 (0) 1902 880906 or email: adrian@nurseryfair.com www.nurseryfair.com
As always, and as a firm supporter of the Harrogate Int. Nursery Fair, Nursery Today are looking forward to once again exhibiting at this fantastic nursery trade show. With the stand booked, the magazine will be available to all visitors to the fair and the Nursery Today team is looking forward to seeing everyone in the industry (together of course with viewing all the wonderful products that will be showcased within the many halls!).
If you are an exhibitor, or currently looking to book your stand space with the show organisers, contact Christine Contreras to find out how Nursery Today can assist you with your marketing before, during or after the event within our special Harrogate Int. Baby changing bags are an essential item for new parents. They are designed to be practical, stylish and help parents manage the daily essentials of caring for a baby. They have become increasingly popular in recent years as parents have become more conscious of the need for organisation and convenience when out and about with their baby.
One of the main reasons why baby changing bags are so popular is that they are available in a range of different fabric types and styles, which means that parents can choose a bag that suits their personal taste and lifestyle. Enesco’s Trade Marketing Manager Aylish Ellwood told Nursery Today “Busy parents of young children want to be prepared for all eventualities. An organised bag of essentials is the perfect start! Even though changing bags are certainly an essential item, they are still very much a considered purchase. Functional and stylish being the main factors of consideration.”
Enesco brings a smile to the everyday ….with the iconic cheeky chappy, Mr Fox !
Fun and functional is the theme as Enesco proudly presents Mr Fox Scion Baby pram organiser. Complete with velcro straps, which easily attach to the pram, a sturdy adjustable shoulder strap is also included. An absolute must when out and about with baby!
Surface washable and sturdy this stylish accessory includes inner and outer pockets which will keep all essentials and valuables at hand, whilst surrounding little one with love and joy.

patterns. We also asked Aylish if she feels fashion trends and lifestyle play a strong role in the type of bag bought? “Yes, the changing bag can be a very important accessory which needs to also co-ordinate with the overall style of the end user. A growing number of consumers are very aware of fashion and trends. It is also essential that the design of the changing bag meets the needs of the consumers lifestyle i.e. size and shape.”
makes it easier for parents to access these items quickly and efficiently when out and about with their baby. Some bags even come with insulated compartments to keep bottles and food warm or cold.
In terms of styles, baby changing bags are available in various shapes and sizes, including tote bags, backpacks, messenger bags, and satchels. Tote bags are a popular option for parents who prefer a traditional bag style. Backpacks are ideal for parents who need their hands free while carrying their baby, and messenger bags and satchels are designed for easy access and organisation.
Baby changing bags also follow fashion trends, with brands often releasing new collections. This allows parents to choose a bag that not only meets their practical needs but also reflects their personal style. Popular fashion trends for baby changing bags include floral prints, bold colours, and geometric
Nursery Today also asked Toynamics (the home of Skip Hop) Head of Marketing Emma Damerell for her thoughts on how changing bags have developed over the years? “Changing bag design has evolved, becoming more lightweight and more spacious. Offering a variety of compartments makes it super easy to find baby’s gear whether it’s a nappy, spare outfit or snack. Making them easy to open and access contents makes parents’ lives easier too. As well as fabulous features, changing bags have become more stylish too, from the materials used to the fabric designs and choice in carry and backpack styles.”
One of the key features of baby changing bags is their clever compartmentalisation. Changing bags are designed with specific compartments for storing items such as nappies, wipes, and baby food. This
In addition to the practical features, baby changing bags are also designed with comfort in mind. They are usually padded and have adjustable straps to ensure that they are comfortable to carry, even when fully loaded. Some bags also have stroller straps, which allow them to be attached to a pram or stroller for even greater convenience.
Retailers can benefit from stocking a variety of baby changing bags as they appeal to a wide range of customers with different tastes and needs. By offering a range of options, retailers can cater to parents who prioritise practicality, style, or comfort. Offering a range of price points can also help retailers appeal to different budgets. “Consumer demand for changing bags makes them a great sales opportunity for retailers.” Said Toynamics Emma, adding “A trusted brand with a selection of bestselling changing bags is a sales driver, and will help keep parents in store - shopping changing bags and across parenting / baby categories.”
Considered as a definite ‘must have’, changing bags continue to rise in popularity, keeping up with current trends and styles.
“Busy parents of young children want to be prepared for all eventualities. An organised bag of essentials is the perfect start!”

Why do consumers view changing bags as an essential item?
Changing bags provides you with enough space to bring everything you need for your little one and yourself on the go. They offer convenience by allowing parents to easily carry all the necessities for changing their little ones on the go.
How have these developed over the years?
Changing bags have developed from being just a practical bag for diapers and clothes into a bag that looks more like a regular bag that can reflect parents’ personal style and fit into their lifestyle.
Does fashion trends and lifestyle play a strong role into the type of bag bought?
Yes, a changing bag can be an accessory like any other bag. The different colours and types allow parents to choose a bag that reflects their personal style. We design changing bags that fit perfectly into everyday life and can be used even when the diaper days are over.
How important is the type of fabric used within the manufacture of these?
We design changing bags in durable materials, making them a reliable choice for parents who need a bag that can withstand daily use in all weather conditions. Our changing bags are made of recycled polyester made from used PET bottles. We really like the thought of reducing waste and giving plastic bottles new life by turning them into useful, new products.
What type of features do parents typically look for when making their purchase?
Parents are typically looking for a stylish, durable changing bag with a lot of pockets for organizing and a soft changing mat for changing diapers on the go. They also want the bag to be convenient to carry like our changing backpack and easy to hook onto the pram.
What about prints, how have these evolved over the years – do you feel we will see any upcoming trends?
Back in the days the changing bag matched the internal print of the pram, and that print was typically very childish. Over the years we have seen a trend in more grown-up-friendly and unisex print and colours regarding changing bags. We believe that this will continue since the consumers want the changing bag to match their own personal style and to be able to use the bag as a regular bag afterwards.
What type of benefits can retailers expect by stocking changing bags instore or on their websites?
By stocking the Done by Deer changing bags the retailers will reach a modern design-orientated consumer group that is looking for an alternative to the traditional changing bags. With our practical changing backpack, retailers will see a large interest from parents of all genders, and our quilted bags, which are coming soon, offers a spacious and novel take on changing bags.
With this cool quilted Done by Deer changing bag, you will have enough space to bring all you need for your little one and yourself. The bag is made of recycled polyester made from 48 used PET bottles and has several practical features for parents to enjoy.
The weatherproof surface will protect your essentials from getting wet and a practical changing mat makes diaper changing easy. The many pockets will help organise the necessities and the bag even has an insulated pocket to keep fluids hot or cold.
The Done by Deer changing bag comes in three lovely, timeless colours with matching straps to easily attach the bag to the pram. Pack your everyday essentials in a quilted changing bag and take your little one on an adventure.

Why are strollers so popular with parents?
Every parent ends up with a stroller. It’s doesn’t matter what travel system you start with there is room for a stroller in your life.
Strollers undeniably make day to day activities easier. From a quick shop in the supermarket or the school run. You can’t ignore the ease and simplicity of a stroller. Not to mention how much lighter they are than a travel system or pushchair. Some makes and models have many of the features of a larger pushchair now too and have a real luxury feel.
Are these seen by your customers as a value item?
Most definitely. Customers will often use their travel system for 6-12 months then a stroller for the next 1-3 years. It is definitely a valued item. Once they get used to the weight, easy of fold and small size it is often hard for them to go back to the chunky travel system or pushchair.
There is a massive demand for “cabin friendly” strollers too. For those parents venturing on a plane with little ones. We have seen a huge increase in parents asking for these. They allow them to have access to a pushchair at any point in the airport. Which prove invaluable with a tired baby.
With the continued cost-ofliving crisis do you feel we might experience an increase in the demand for more value ranges in the stroller category?
I think that there is a great demand in both sections of the market. Customers often want something “cheap and cheerful” for a holiday abroad that they perhaps think will get damaged so are very budget conscious.
The most popular model for this type of customer for us is the Joie Nitro - amazing value and great quality.
Then there is the other end of the market where customers look to the more luxury brands and models like the Nuna Trvl with a magnetic harness and leatherette handle or the amazing tiny fold of the Baby Jogger City Tour 2.
I think that some overlook the stroller market and do miss out with sales. For us as a store the stroller market is very strong.
Do you feel social media helps to assist drive awareness to this particular product sector?
100 percent yes! Tiktok and Facebook are amazing advertising portals for such exposure. Folding stroller videos perform exceptionally well for Tiktok as it’s something that looks impressive and can be done very quickly. We recently had a stroller video “Dad’s on Tour” that reached over 2 million people.... The gravity fold strollers are brilliant for social media as they literally fold themselves. They are effortless. A really popular model is the Miniuno Touchfold. For value and ease of use it is very difficult to beat. It comes with travel bag, raincover and footmuff. With a fantastic choice of colours too.
Have you noticed a particular time in the year when you see a growth in your sales with regards to strollers?
June onwards up to October we call stroller season. Every second person walking through the door is looking for a stroller. Cabin friendly, compact folding or something cheap and cheerful. This is due to these months being popular holiday seasons. Where parents begin to need something more compact that what they already have. A lot of customers choose to upgrade
existing strollers during this time too depending the colour of the season. The most amazing colour and designs are usually introduced around this time.
What are your customers looking for with regards to features when considering which stroller to purchase?
Compact fold: Everyone is looking at the size of the fold when purchasing a stroller.
Cabin friendly: We remind customers that different airlines have different measurement requirement so to always check with the airline before purchasing.
Extending hoods: Customers love this feature as it helps shade babies in the warmer climates and protects them from the sun. Also useful for those afternoon snoozes.
Travel bags: Customers like this features as it can help keep the stroller dry and clean during transit.
Ease of use: They want a stroller that is easy to use. They don’t want to fight with features.
Shopping baskets: Although these are smaller than in bigger pushchairs customer still like to see one to store small items.
Lie back option: Every baby needs the ability to have a little snooze. All parents are looking for the option to lie back.
Weight: The lighter the better when it comes to a stroller.
By stocking strollers, what type of benefits do you as a retailer gain?
The stroller market is huge. Especially during the summer months. We see every travel system customer as a potential customer for a stroller. As 99 percent of them return to purchase one at some point.
We stock a huge range of strollers to suit every budget. Ranging from the revamped nitro for £32.99 upto the Nuna Trvl for £350. We have around 50 different designs on display.
We often see customer returning again and again for a new set of wheels. We have one particular customer who buys a new stroller every 2-3 months. Always wanting the latest design or brand. In her own words she “gets bored easily”.
We also see stroller sales as a great way to also sell other “extras”. Customers often add a UV parasol and battery operated fan to the purchase.
Parents today are busier than ever, and they need a way to move around with their babies that is both convenient and safe. Baby strollers provide the perfect solution to this problem. They allow parents to easliy transport their infants or toddlers, which is especially important when they are out and about. Additionally, strollers make it easier for parents to travel longer distances, such as walking around the shops, taking a stroll in the park or a more convenient travel solution while holidaying. As a result, parents can spend more quality time with their babies without worrying about their comfort and safety. As Dorel’s Field Marketeer Rose Landreth says “Strollers are popular with parents because they offer a compact and convenient alternative to a large pushchair, giving them flexibility and ease when travelling. There are now so many great options which still offer the comfort of a large pushchair with the convenience or a stroller, so parents don’t need to compromise.”
Cosatto’s Creative & Marketing Director, Vicky Morley agrees adding “Strollers are super easy to use, lightweight and convenient too. Once baby is able to sit up, at the age of around six months, they are a lot more practical for parents than a travel system. Not only are they more compact, so take up a lot less room in terms of storage, they are easier to fit in the boot of a car too. It also means that they literally have one mode of transport that covers a multitude of journeys... from holidays to days out and shopping trips to the school run, just one stroller covers it all and it’s this convenience that consumers are looking for.”
Baby strollers have always been designed to be incredibly easy to use, as they are created to be lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, even with one hand. Many strollers come with features such as adjustable handles, reclining seats, and storage
compartments, which make them even more convenient for parents. Some strollers are even designed to fold up quickly and easily, making them ideal for traveling.
Today baby strollers come with a range of features that cater to the needs of both babies and parents.
such as the ramble carrycots and compatible infant carriers. They therefore make a great early purchase option for use with grandparents or childminders and are then also on hand for use on holiday.
“Parents are carefully considering all of their purchases as a result of the cost-of-living crisis, so the
Some common features include adjustable handles, reclining seats, cup holders, storage compartments, and sunshades. However, with the continued cost-of-living crisis are we currently experiencing an increase in the demand for more value ranges in the stroller category? “Parents are carefully considering all of their purchases as a result of the cost-of-living crisis, so the stroller category is no different.” Says Rose. “We know that parents want the best for their new arrival, and we feel proud that our strollers offer safety and comfort at amazing value.” Joie’s Head of Product Management, Damon Marriot feels the consumer is naturally at the moment looking for value for money commenting “The consumer is looking everywhere for areas where they can make saving, so yes, this sector will certainly see budgets squeezed. For this reason, the traditional umbrella stroller may well continue in its popularity due to its competitive price. However, there are products on the market, like the Joie pact and the tourist that are part of a growing category that have the ability to share additional accessories
stroller category is no different. We know that parents want the best for their new arrival, and we feel proud that our strollers offer safety and comfort at amazing value.”
The baby stroller industry is constantly growing and innovating. New designs and features are being introduced every year, and there is always something new for parents to choose from. One of the most significant trends in recent years has been the introduction of lightweight strollers that are easy to manoeuvre and transport. Additionally, many strollers are now designed to be eco-friendly, with sustainable materials and production processes.
Retailers can expect to benefit significantly from stocking baby strollers. They are a high-demand item that can attract a lot of foot fall to a store. Furthermore, parents are willing to pay a premium for high-quality strollers that offer convenience and safety. Baby strollers are also often purchased alongside other baby products, such as car seats and cribs, which can lead to increased sales and customer loyalty.
The popularity of baby strollers has grown significantly over the years, thanks to the convenience they offer.
Strollers are super easy to use, lightweight and convenient too. Once baby is able to sit up, at the age of around six months, they are a lot more practical for parents than a travel system.

Why are strollers so popular with parents?
With the recent advances in innovation in this category, it’s possible to offer consumers strollers that give them all the benefits and features of full-size strollers without the bulk and without the price tag.
Are these seen by the consumer as a value item? With the continued cost-ofliving crisis do you feel we might experience an increase in the demand for more value ranges in the stroller category?
More and more consumers are choosing strollers as their first choice of buggy as even the most premium stroller works out as more cost-effective than a full travel system or pushchair when they choose one that will last them from birth to age four without needing to purchase extra parts and pieces, particularly if it offers all the comfort and features of a full-size system. This means they can afford, and are more likely to choose, higher quality products that will last. What are consumers looking for with regards to features when considering which stroller to purchase? Do you feel consumers are looking for similar features that a larger pram/pushchair might offer, for example, lie flat capabilities, one hand fold, etc.?
As innovation in the stroller category grows, consumers are looking for the best of both worlds, with all the features of a full-size pushchairs with the compactness and ease-of-use of a stroller. Adaptability for parent and child is key, particularly for those only intending to purchase one product to last; meaning features like an extendable handlebar for parents and suitability from birth through toddlerhood for baby are top of parents’ wish lists. This is closely followed by compact size and weight measurements and additionally available accessories and colour choices etc. to suit a range of lifestyles and usage.
By stocking strollers, what type of benefits can retailers expect?
Stocking strollers is an opportunity retailers can’t afford to miss out on. Full size pushchairs and travel systems aren’t the first choice for all consumers so not only does stocking strollers allow them to cater to different lifestyles, but most parents who buy a full-size system move onto a stroller at some point which gives retailers the opportunity to secure repeat custom. And, by diversifying their range, they increase their likelihood of being considered a one-stop-shop.
BRAND MANAGER - NUNA
Why are strollers so popular with parents?
Every parent needs a trusty travel companion to enjoy those everyday adventures that are waiting around the corner. The Nuna TRIV next stroller is a perfect city dweller that quickly converts to a travel system, packs up easily, and stands on its own when folded, becoming the perfect sidekick to parents’ everyday journeys. They are popular thanks to being lightweight with easy manoeuvrability providing cushiony smooth city strolls.
With the continued cost-of-living crisis do you feel we might experience an increase in the demand for more value ranges in the stroller category?
When it comes to value, parents reflect on durability, safety and style, as well as price point to find a stroller that suits their lifestyle and budget. There’s a range of products available to suit and a broad consumer base requiring baby gear.
What are consumers looking for with regards to features when considering which stroller to purchase?
Some of the key features consumers look for in a stroller include product weight, ease of fold, material comfort within the seat, manoeuvrability, the fabrics used, suspension, and being travel system ready. At Nuna we work tirelessly to ensure we tick all of these boxes, ensuring we create products that parents and children love!
How important is the weight/size to consumers when looking at strollers?
The importance of weight and size of the stroller is dependent on the lifestyle of the consumer, for instance if the stroller will need to be easily folded on public transport or if it will need to be carried upstairs. The Nuna TRIV next stroller is lightweight, folds up quickly one handed with the seat in place and stands on its own.
Why are strollers so popular with parents?
Strollers are super easy to use, lightweight and convenient too. Once baby is able to sit up, at the age of around six months, they are a lot more practical for parents than a travel system. Not only are they more compact, so take up a lot less room in terms of storage, they are easier to fit in the boot of a car too. It also means that they literally have one mode of transport that covers a multitude of journeys... from holidays to days out and shopping trips to the school run, just one stroller covers it all and it’s this convenience that consumers are looking for.
Are these seen by the consumer as a value item?
For us, this really depends on the customer demographic, because the current climate is seeing a growth in parents taking price into consideration. However, there are also a lot of parents who will value quality and design over price. A lot of parents really put the time in to research the product they want and then look for a retailer via Google Shopping to find the best price. In accommodating this, digital advertising has become a huge part of our marketing strategy at Cosatto.
Do you feel consumers are looking for similar features that a larger pram/pushchair might offer, for example, lie flat capabilities, one hand fold, etc.?
They do; however, weight and convenience are way more important at this stage as it needs to be a one-size fits all situations kind of scenario. They want one stroller that they can use both at the supermarket and on holiday. When they are looking for a pram for newborn, comfort and suspension are much higher up the list.
How important is the weight/size to consumers when looking at strollers?
I would say these are absolutely the key considerations when looking for a compact fold. However, with so many options on the market, they do want a product that will last them for years, up until their child is at least three years old, if not for their next child too. This is why design is also a consideration as well as functionality, as they want a stroller that looks good too.
By stocking strollers, what type of benefits can retailers expect?
Our retailer relationships are really important to us. That is why we offer great benefits and support across the board. We also offer eye-catching POS display materials and around the clock training support through our dedicated Facebook group. This bond also means that our retailers can look to extend the lifetime value of a customer and keep them coming back as the child grows.
Nursery Today spoke to a number of the industry’s finest to find out their views on the stroller sector.
Why are strollers so popular with parents?
Strollers do tend to be available at a lower price point, so they are a great option for taking on holiday if you want to avoid potential loss or damage of the main pushchair. They are also usually smaller, lighter, and many come with a compact fold which is another great advantage when travelling. Parents may also choose to switch to a lighter stroller over a heavy pushchair when their little ones start to walk.
Are these seen by the consumer as a value item?
Generally, yes, they are. You can get a good stroller for under £100. However, the stroller category is ever expanding – designs have evolved past the traditional umbrella fold with more feature rich models that include compact folds. Because of this we are seeing prices explode to over £300 for more premium variants.
With the continued cost-of-living crisis do you feel we might experience an increase in the demand for more value ranges in the stroller category?
The consumer is looking everywhere for areas where they can make saving, so yes, this sector will certainly see budgets squeezed. For this reason, the traditional umbrella stroller may well continue in its popularity due to its competitive price. However, there are products on the market, like the Joie pact and the tourist that are part of a growing category that have the ability to share additional accessories such as the ramble carrycots and compatible infant carriers. They therefore make a great early purchase option for use with grandparents or childminders and are then also on hand for use on holiday. What are consumers looking for with regards to features when considering which stroller to purchase?
This very much depends on the time of purchase. If parents are looking for a quick fix because they are heading on holiday and need something urgently, then they may make an impulse purchase of a value umbrella stroller. However, retailers that drive the advantages of having a compact fold to new parents, do have that option to up sell to a travel system.
Do you feel consumers are looking for similar features that a larger pram/pushchair might offer, for example, lie flat capabilities, one hand fold, etc.?
It’s certainly important that the stroller is easy to fold as parents are likely to be holding a younger baby or the hand of a toddler – so a one-handed fold is a must have feature. Parents with young children who like to nap on the go will also look for a deep recline, but equally parents with slightly older children will want a back rest that sits up properly so.
How important is the weight/size to consumers when looking at strollers?
This is something that is very important to the consumer as travel and storage are key factors when it comes to purchasing a stroller. Less than 7kg is usually a must have but closer to 6kg is very desirable when it comes to portability.
Do brand names play a role within this product sector?
As with most products within the nursery industry, a reputable brand name is important. If gives the consumer confidence and faith in their purchase and the product that they are trusting with their child’s safety.
By stocking strollers, what type of benefits can retailers expect?
Extra sales are always the aim of the game for a product to warrant its space in store - the clever retailer has the opportunity to tie stroller sales into the new parents’ initial pram purchase, where the compact size and cross use of components makes them a viable choice.
Why are strollers so popular with parents?
Strollers are classed as an essential purchase and is likely to be one of the first purchases a new parent considers. The vast spectrum of models, designs and functions now available gives a wide range of choice to suit all demands of lifestyle and costs.
Are these seen by the consumer as a value item?
Not necessarily but the large choice available does provide simple and practical functional strollers that are great for shorter term usage and are amazing. Strollers that can be used from birth still include many features and functions that larger more traditional prams provide.
With the continued cost-of-living crisis do you feel we might experience an increase in the demand for more value ranges in the stroller category?
Very likely as this is a trend we are already seeing with a high demand for value strollers that consumers can rely on but at a keen price point. As there continue to be cost increases impacting inflation and the cost of living crisis, purchases for new parents will be more considered.
What are consumers looking for with regards to features when considering which stroller to purchase?
Some parents may want a simple and practical stroller for ease of use when travelling around town, easy to fold, carry on public transport etc and ideal for holidays. Others may wish to invest into a more mid range stroller with additional features and functions which will very much depend on lifestyle and budgets.
Do you feel consumers are looking for similar features that a larger pram/pushchair might offer, for example, lie flat capabilities, one hand fold, etc.?
Everyone wants the best they can afford and I think lifestyle expectations will affect any decision when choosing a stroller. There are some amazing budget strollers which can offer extra features that all help the function of a stroller such as one hand fold, and multi seat positions etc. Of course there are also models which include a whole range of accessories so a great all in 1 purchase.
How important is the weight/size to consumers when looking at strollers?
Weight and size is more relevant these days as parents are always trying to juggle lifestyle and having a lightweight and compact stroller will help when travelling and storage especially if using a stroller with another toddler or child as well.
Do brand names play a role within this product sector?
Most brand names are well known by consumers and parents are also very tuned into online presence of brands which means products can easily be researched in advance. But that’s not to say that in the current climate especially, parents will be considering the more economical brands as these brands can offer the same quality and functions at more affordable price points.
By stocking strollers, what type of benefits can retailers expect?
I would assume that all nursery retailers would automatically stock strollers as this is usually a basic purchase so to exclude any from a range would mean a loss sales opportunity as consumers will then move to another retailer to find a suitable solution.

The Baby Products Association’s AGM will take place on Tuesday 20th June 2023 in Central London. This will be the first face-to-face AGM for several years as after covid disruptions, last year’s meeting had no option but to go virtual due to train strikes. We are looking forward to a great networking event for 2023 and plan to have some informative speakers too.
The law with regard to children’s car seats is complex and has become even more so since Brexit. Luke Burns, General Manager, CYBEX is a car seat expert and will make a presentation to help you navigate through this and provide a better understanding of the requirements in Europe and how these differ in Great Britain. This will be followed by a Q&A
session to ensure you have all the facts you need.
The Baby Products Association has announced that its 2023 Concept & Innovation Awards are now open and anyone with an exciting new baby product invention is invited to submit an entry.
Robert Anslow of the Association explains: “As a trade association we are keen to promote excellence and innovation in the nursery industry and these annual awards encourage this. Over the years we have been presented with some extremely interesting and innovative ideas. Some of these turn out to be too ambitious in terms of manufacturing costs and realistic retail prices and there are always concerns about how some of the designs will be able to comply with rigorous testing and safety standards.
“The Baby Products Association judges are a team of experts with many years combined experience in all aspects of baby products from design and manufacture, to safety and compliance to retail and marketing. They have been able to advise and guide entrepreneurs and help to support them in their journey to market.”
The Concept & Innovation Awards finalists will be invited to attend Harrogate International Nursery Fair from 15th to 17th October 2023 where the winner will be announced.
Entries are invited from anyone with an interesting and unique baby product idea – this could be from companies already working in the sector, mumpreneurs (or dadpreneurs!), to college and university students – the only criteria is that the product must not be launched into the market place prior to the trade show in October.
More information and entry forms are available to download from the website at www.b-p-a.org – the deadline to submit entries is 12 noon on 18th August 2023.
In addition, Asha Bhalsod from Etopia Consultancy, which specialises in working with Amazon, will answer questions about how to get the best from trading on this platform. This can be from how to build a shoppable brand, to training staff in Amazon account management.
We hope that as many members as possible will turn up and support the Baby Products Association. We will shortly be issuing invitations to nominate yourself or someone within your organisation to join the Association’s Technical Committee - so if you or any of your team would enjoy participating and helping to shape the future of product creation and design, please let us know. Please keep an eye out for the invitations nearer the time.
The government announced that 8th May 2023 will be designated as a bank holiday to mark King Charles’ Coronation. But do employees have the right to take this additional bank holiday as paid leave?
The ability of an employee to take this additional bank holiday will be determined by the specific language of their employment contract.
If the contract of employment states that the annual holiday entitlement will be a certain number of days “plus public or bank holidays,” they will be contractually entitled to take the additional holiday.
Where the contract stipulates a set number of bank holidays or specifically names the bank holidays, the employee will not be entitled to the additional day off.
Similarly, where the contract simply refers to 20 days plus “the usual bank holidays” or “commonly observed bank holidays”, it can be argued that as this is not a commonly observed bank holiday, employees are not entitled to it.
In these circumstances, the employee can still take the day off as paid leave out of their outstanding statutory entitlement for that holiday year (usually 20 days per annum). Employers are however free to grant the additional day off at their absolute discretion. If you do so, it is important to make sure you highlight that it is a one-off benefit and not an entitlement. Employers have a duty to act consistently and it is therefore important to consider how employers treated The Queens Jubilee Platinum bank holiday. Was this day granted as a holiday? Were employees allowed a day off on the day of the Queens funeral?
With part-time employees, the construction of the contract of employment will determine their entitlement.
