WELCOME

Summer sailing THE YEAR 2020 HAS SO FAR BROUGHT MORE THAN ITS FAIR SHARE OF SURPRISES. WHO COULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT MORE THAN HALFWAY INTO THE YEAR WE WOULD STILL NOT HAVE SEEN A SUCCESSFUL BOAT SHOW AND THE UNCERTAINTY AROUND TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS AND LOCKDOWN HAS LEFT A GAPING HOLE IN THE TYPICALLY BUSTLING CHARTER BUSINESS. On the upside, some countries are beginning to find new ways of welcoming visitors on both land and sea, and we explore what that might look like on our ‘transitioning out of lockdown’ feature on p38. While plans for the postponed 2020 Monaco Yacht Show remain on hold (p10), it looks like Damen will be holding the first live event of the year with a private invite-only showcase, headlined by its new 77m SeaXplorer La Datcha (p15). This issue, we focus on developments taking place in Turkey, where Bilgin Yachts is making waves in the shipbuilding sphere with its 80m Tatiana, the largest yacht built in Turkey to date (p34). And Alia Yachts is also making noise with the July 2020 launch of its new 23m coastal cruiser La Paloma, which, after a year in build, was rolled out of the construction shed to commence sea trials before being delivered to her French owner (p20). For owners keen to get back out there but unable to do so at present, why not take a metaphorical approach and take a read of our article on Italian shipyard Antonini Navi’s Crossover series that puts the owner in the driving seat. The first model in its UP40 platform has been designed in collaboration with architect and designer Fulvio De Simoni (p12). We feature four incredible yacht reports this issue, each one as remarkable as the next, from Royal Huisman’s three-masted schooner Sea Eagle II – the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht – on p24, to Vitters 50m ‘modern classic’ cutter rigged ketch, Meraki (p30). Delivered in June 2020 and managed by Imperial, Benetti’s 107m Lana is now available for charter in the Mediterranean (p40), and Nobiskrug’s mighty Artefact shows how yachts can be both beautiful and sustainable on p16. Last but not least, mobile, media & more throw a little light on the current situation with its LED solutions for some of the world’s biggest yachts (p28). Thank you, as always, for all of your support and we hope to see you at a boat show in the near future! Julia Zaltzman Editor

Superyacht W undergoes refit at Feadship Superyacht W has undergone a major refit at Dutch shipyard Feadship. Originally launched as Larisa in 2013, the 58m yacht now sports a striking new metallic silver hull. The new livery and antifouling were part of an enormous range of alterations made to W over the past ten months to reflect the ways in which her experienced owner likes to enjoy life at sea. “After buying W in 2019 I set out to not only refit my newly acquired Feadship to my specific requirements but to also renew her in every possible respect while ensuring that she remained 100% a Feadship”, explained the owner.

Multiplex breaks new ground with full carbon bridge Multiplex, the German manufacturer of boarding systems, has supplied an integrated full carbon bridge for a 38m yacht. The futuristic design was requested by the owner to break away from the otherwise traditional look and feel of the boat. Jan Reiners, CEO of Multiplex, said: “After the owner had already ordered sun awnings and a gangway for the project, this request [for a carbon bridge] came as a surprise. We are, of course, happy to meet such a challenge.”

THE INDUSTRY’S LARGEST SHOW ON THE YACHTING CALENDAR CONFIRMS POSTPONEMENT OF THE EVENT UNTIL SEPTEMBER 2021

I

t was meant to be a landmark year in 2020 for the Monaco Yacht Show. Recognised the world over as the most glamorous event on the yachting calendar, it is where new builds are launched, concepts are unveiled and owners flock to buy. But with the onset of global travel bans in the wake of Covid-19, both the event itself and its momentous 30th anniversary celebrations have been put on hold for another year.

Looking to 2021

The show’s organisers, Informa Markets, which boasts more than 400 international B2B events and brands, has reportedly been in “constant discussions” with stakeholders and partners within the international superyacht industry ever since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

At the time of SuperYacht Industry going to press, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which is scheduled to take place in October, remains on course for a 2020 event. All borders and seaports across America remain open, and the show anticipates 900 boats to be on display, including 100 superyachts. However, amid fears of a global second spike and as levels of active cases of coronavirus continue to rise throughout the United States it remains to be seen whether the 2020 show will remain viable.

Joint decisions Early indications that the show may not go ahead came in May of this year when both SYBAss and LYBRA pulled out of the running. In a publicised letter that was sent to Informa, both organisations were said to have “doubts over the safety of the show, the ability and/or willingness for clients to attend and whether the show is appropriate within the context of the global pandemic”. Despite this setback, Informa reported that a low-density not-for-profit version of the show would still run. However, following discussions with owners, shipyards, brokers and other key participants the decision has now been made that the “disruption of Covid-19” is too severe. A press release from Informa states: “With much of the superyacht fleet currently located in the US and Caribbean and the normal calendar of activity severely disrupted, it has been agreed that it is in the industry’s best interests to postpone the delivery of a top quality, prestige experience 30th edition of the Monaco Yacht Show next year, in September 2021, rather than September 2020.”

s u p e r y a c h t - i n d u s t r y. com

Monaco Yacht Show.indd 11

The decision to postpone Monaco 2020 is said to have been made in accordance with the Principality itself, which is directly affected both logistically and financially by the annual event. Instead, all parties are reported to have agreed to “focus their efforts and energy on supporting the International Yachting Community through Informa Markets’ US brands, including the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show”.

“Like many other industries, the international superyachting community has experienced significant disruption in 2020”, says Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive of Informa Markets. “As we move to the other side of Covid-19, we are remaining agile in how we are supporting our partners and customers, flexing our events calendar, adapting products and providing digital alternatives where beneficial to best meet the needs of international communities through this difficult period.” He added: “To this end, we are focusing our efforts in the latter part of the year on delivering a strong platform to showcase the industry at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in late October, with the Monaco Yacht Show now set to return in style in September 2021, when it will celebrate its 30th Anniversary.”

D

esigned in collaboration with architect and designer Fulvio De Simoni, the UP40 Crossover from Antonini Navi is the first of three models from the UP40 modular steel platform. The signature of this series is the control it hands to the owner from the very start of the project. It offers the choice of an open deck or enclosed bridge, but more importantly, owners can choose their preferred concept during the construction phase. “This model is a modern reinterpretation of classic boats designed for a precise function: simple forms with a strong personality clad a versatile architecture open to customisation, designed to offer a simple and direct way to enjoy life at sea”, says Fulvio De Simoni.

Challenging convention With construction due to commence in September, the design focuses on two main

decks that are connected by a half-deck containing a single helm station. The idea is for a contemporary take on a classic design, largely expressed by the cut of the bow. “The unusual arrangement of the decks, with the wheelhouse area and foredeck set at a height midway between the main and upper decks, minimises the difference in height and creates continuity across the entire upper section of the boat”, says De Simoni. “[This turns] it into a huge terrace on the sea covering over 200m2, a sizeable portion of which is protected and shaded by the hard top.”

Customer customisation Other customisations include furnishing options for the exterior areas. The opportunity to have an infinity pool installed in the bow allows owners to create a solarium-like space that offers views and shelter when underway or at

The Open Deck model has been designed with warm Mediterranean cruising in mind. The Enclosed Bridge model is more suited to colder climates and comes equipped with a superstructure that covers part of the upper deck in extensive glazed surfaces. What this model lacks in open-air living it more than makes up for with sheltered panoramic vistas. With the Enclosed Bridge model, the owner’s suite can stretch up to 60m2 with the addition of a private terrace. A further four double guest cabins are on the lower deck.

Static and dynamic testing of the hull, hull lines and appendages was performed at the MARIN Maritime Research Institute in the Netherlands, simulating sea-keeping in up to extreme navigation conditions. Large fuel tanks and a special focus on efficient cruising give the UP40 a range of over 5,000nm when cruising at 10kts. A top speed of 15kts gives the yacht pace when required.

DAMEN YACHTING IS SET TO BE ONE OF THE FIRST SHIPYARDS THIS YEAR TO HOLD A LIVE PRIVATE event in the wake of postponed boat shows to present its collection of new builds.

T

he entire yachting calendar has been put on hold in 2020 following the outbreak of the coronavirus, with high profile events including the Monaco Yacht Show postponed for another year. But Dutch shipyard Damen Yachting has announced plans for a live private event that will give its clients the opportunity to view its latest yacht portfolio without concerns about safety or large crowds. The three-day event – the Amels and Damen Yachting Private View 2020 – is set to take place at the Damen shipyard in the south of the Netherlands from 17-19 September. Set to showcase around ten yachts from the yard’s current portfolio, its headline act will no doubt be La Datcha, the new 77m SeaXplorer expedition yacht launching the same month.

Amels Damen.indd 15

“It’s great to see how clients have embraced virtual technology during the last few months, but in our business nothing can replace the opportunity to step on board a selection of beautifully presented showcase yachts”, says Rose Damen, Managing Director of Damen Yachting. “We’re delighted to offer charter and new build clients the first chance to join us on board our yachts again since this all began. And by hosting them at our yard, we can ensure maximum comfort, safety and privacy with a very limited number of VIP guests invited.”

Best in show At 77m La Datcha will be the first SeaXplorer to ever be shown, not to mention the largest yacht on display. It’s hoped that with a private audience of top tier invites, Damen will find takers for La Datcha’s 2021 worldwide charter itinerary, which is reported to still have availability. Private viewing is by invitation only and there is no general admission to the yard. For clients unable to attend, VIP virtual tours on board will be arranged. Also on display will be a 74m Amels Limited Edition and a new Amels 242 under

construction for 2021 delivery. From its collection of yacht support vessels a 55m vessel, which is currently under construction at the Damen yard in Antalya and will head straight to Vlissingen after completion. Further yachts due to be included in the line-up will be confirmed in the coming weeks. “This is something we’ve never done before”, says Rose Damen. “Together with the yacht crews at our yard, my family and our team are looking forward to welcoming our guests for a very special private visit to the yachts in top presentation with full luxury service. We have a helicopter landing area on site so our guests and their families can enjoy the experience securely and privately – almost like having a whole boat show just for themselves. And at the same time, we have boats in production right next door for fast delivery in 2021, so it makes the whole decision-making process very transparent for our clients. We’re also missing the boat show buzz, so we’re very excited about making this happen in September.”

She is the latest delivery to come from German shipyard Nobiskrug, whose most notable build to date is 143m Sailing Yacht A. Exterior designed by British designer Gregory C. Marshall, Artefact continues the yard’s reputation for building custom designs that are both seagoing and innovative.

From the beginning of the project, the owner’s intention was three-fold. To prove that beautiful man-made objects can complement the natural environment in which they inhabit, to set new standards for environmental stewardship within yachting, and to enhance comfort at sea for guests.

fuel emissions – one of the owner’s key requirements – but the advanced DC bus digital power management system allows the vessel to fully integrate multiple sources of power from solar cells, variable-speed generators, and lithium batteries, as well as potential future technologies, such as fuel cells. What this means is that Artefact can travel short distances on just its batteries alone; quite some feat for an 80m yacht. It also features dual azimuthing pods that enable dynamic positioning to hold the boat in place without dropping anchor, therefore protecting sensitive seafloors and marine ecosystems. Artefact’s wastewater systems also allow reuse in technical operations to further reduce

Integrated interiors Little has been released about the details of Artefact’s Reymond Langton Design interior, save the fact the layout and design fully integrate with the distinctive window shapes to create a holistic guest experience. An incredible 750m2 of glass, weighing 60 tons, run down the sides of the yacht, defining the boat in profile. That amount of glass is a yachting first, and it didn’t come without its fair share of challenges with regards to weight, solar heat gain,

optical properties and reflections of sound and noise. Noise and vibration management specifications far exceed industry standards. But the result is that Artefact’s “acoustic signature” sits in harmony with its design. Not to mention each guest cabin is flooded with natural light, as are the main entertaining spaces, providing a clear connection to the outdoor marine environment and a view of the far-reaching horizon, and beyond. Commenting on its 2020 delivery, Nobiskrug states: “Artefact proves to be the perfect marriage of art and science through ground-breaking architectural design and innovative engineering.”

Sea Eagle II is the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht.

N

ot only the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht, Sea Eagle II is also one of the top ten largest sailing yachts ever built. Hailing from Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman, the yacht completed sea trials in the North Sea in July 2020 following the installation of a complex carbon composite Rondal Panamax rig at the yard’s facilities in Amsterdam. The elegant 81m three-masted schooner is now enjoying her maiden voyage in the fair seas of the Mediterranean. With over 3,500m2 of sails, Sea Eagle II was commissioned by the Asian-born owner of 43m sailing yacht Sea Eagle, which is now for sale. Calling upon the same design team as his previous vessel – Dykstra Naval Architects and designer Mark Whiteley – as well as the same shipyard, the impressive new build sailing yacht speaks volumes about the owner’s satisfaction with his existing boat.

Modern makeover In addition to her considerable length, Sea Eagle II also sports a distinctive and sturdy plumb bow, cutting a fine profile on water. The largest yacht ever built by Royal Huisman, which specialises in sail boats, not to mention the largest Asian owned superyacht, Sea Eagle II can reach speeds of up to 21 knots when under sail. Built in lightweight aluminium to LY3 standards, Sea Eagle II can accommodate up to 12 guests, serviced by an additional 13 crew. The interior has been undertaken by Mark Whiteley, who commented: “[Sea Eagle II] has a timeless, classic profile with a clean, modern interior. It’s a yacht that will never go out of style.” Whiteley was also responsible for the exterior, with naval architecture handled by Dykstra

Naval Architects, who commented: “It may look like a contemporary modern sailing yacht now, but in 50 years’ time it will be a classic.”

Key features The owner, who is a highly experienced sailor and is reported to have spent a lot of time at sea, laid out a brief with key criteria. He called for a world cruising yacht with comfortable features and a distinctive design. In addition to a fast-looking hull shape with straight lines and a long waterline, this has been realised by way of two helms on a two-tier deck house, one on the large sun deck with flybridge controls, and one in the sheltered cockpit below that offers al fresco dining. The addition of sofas and a bar in the cockpit will create a sociable environment, while a sliding door gives direct access to the main saloon. “Sailing around the world in the weekends is a phrase often used to outline his days on board,” Royal Huisman project manager Arjo Spans told Yachting World.

Business on board The forward section of the yacht is given over to the owner’s private guest areas, including a large saloon in which to conduct business. Variations of wood, including natural oak, lacquered walnut and dark wengé give the interior a warm and inviting aesthetic. Formal dining for up to sixteen guests is complemented by a raft of tenders and water toys for the ultimate adventure by day. Quirky design comes to the fore with the hydraulic crow’s nest that ascends the main mast. In a contemporary nod to classic sail boat design, the design novelty is another showcase of the cutting-edge technology on board this modern sail vessel. It will also provide the best panoramic views on board. All three masts are carbon and made by Rondal – Royal Huisman’s sister company – equipped with integrated sail handling systems and Carbo-Link carbon standing rigging.

lmost without exception, the owners of large yachts today demand homogeneous light lines on their boats. In more than 95% of applications at mobile, media & more, we use the standard encapsulated neon flex or milky products, such as our Dynamene product families. These are customised in-house in length, injection of front connector and preinstalled cable feed and end cabs. We reacted to this development early on and rely on our ‘Made in Germany’ manufacturing in order to maintain control of both functionality and delivery time. Britta Vorfelder, CEO of mobile, media & more, explains the advantage of in-house production, commenting: “We can guarantee an extremely short delivery time due to our machine equipment and our skilled workers, and deliver the product in all lengths and versions.” This is especially important in the project or construction phases.

mobile, media & more was founded at the end of 2003 by Britta Vorfelder and her business partner. Following the supply of two large LEDbased screens for events, the business focus shifted to the yacht industry. The first project was Lürssen-built 155m Al Said, accommodating 65 guests and around 150 crew members. Al Said delivered in 2006 and had around 500m of LED strips installed. Today the number of metres per project is between 3,000 and 5,000. mobile, media & more’s products can be found on well over 100 superyachts, including the largest in the world. Located near Frankfurt in Main, mobile, media & more employs a proven team of specialists who supervise projects all over the world.

At mobile, media & more, we also need to respond to the requirements of interior fitters and designers in the superyacht sector looking for shorter cutting lengths of LED strip segments. The experts for individual LED solutions now offer their Dynamene Milky 10 x 10 and Dynamene Milky 23L material in a cutting length of 41.67mm. This is in place of the previous cutting length of 83.33mm. “The designs of yachts are becoming more and more filigree, so it is possible to work more precisely with the shorter cutting length”, says Vorfelder. This is exemplified by a 100m+ yacht that was equipped with the material, and which underwent an elaborate refit in Hamburg. The Dynamene Milky 10 x 10 product is available in both a sideview and topview version. mobile, media & more offers and supplies it in different colour temperatures and more recently in an RGBW topview version. The portfolio for the injection process includes the Dynamene Milky 10 x 10, the Dynamene 23L and the Dynamene 5050 with dimensions between 10 x 10 and 21 x 11.5mm.

or yacht design to truly succeed, collaboration is key. Dutch shipbuilder Vitters took this philosophy to the next level at the start of 2020 with the launch of its 50m sailing yacht Meraki. Built for owners who are experienced sailors and plan on taking the boat to the farthest regions as well as competitively race, the design team took in sailing professional Chris Bouzaid who advised on an optimised hull shape. Yacht designer Clay Oliver advised on the underwater appendages, while Hoek Design undertook the structural engineering, naval architecture and exterior design. Built by Vitters to Lloyd’s LY3 in high tensile aluminium, the structural drawings were extensive. “The project began with an extensive research project comparing different hull models, beam length ratios, displacement length ratios and keel designs utilising velocity prediction programmes, computational fluid dynamics analysis and tank testing,” the shipyard put out in a press release. The result is a hull that is one of the first of such a large yacht with a slight “tumble home”. The tumble home ensures extra righting moment at the optimum angle of heel and contributes to the overall beauty of the boat. The keel was designed with a large centre board to improve her upwind performance.

Less is more Sleek lines with a reduced freeboard and low deckhouses give the helmsman unrivalled visibility over the deck. Much like the optimised hull and deck design, the interior layout which hails from the drawing boards of Rhoades Young Design was developed with a focus on performance, reliability and comfort. Fully customised to the owner’s preference for “contemporary classic styling”, Meraki has versatility at the core, equally adept at cruising with family and

s a family run business founded in the 1900s and located on the European side of Istanbul, Bilgin Yachts has artisanal craftsmanship and heritage at its core. Recognised for building yachts from 50m up to 120m, the Turkish shipyard has more than 400 highly-skilled craftsmen working together in-house at its 60,000m2 facilities, all of whom have pulled together to build the yard’s largest yacht built in Turkey so far, 80m Tatiana. Tatiana is the first hull in Bilgin’s 263 series defined by sharp exterior lines and naval architecture by Unique Yacht Design. She first launched in February 2020 and underwent final touches in July following a successful series of sea trials.

“With her design and comfort elements, the Bilgin 263 is truly one-of-a-kind”, says Emrecan Özgün, CEO and founder of Unique Yacht Design. “We created a very attractive yacht with a sleek and sexy profile while avoiding a high dosage of design clichés.”

International vision The interior design comes from the drawing boards of British studio H2 Design, with founder Jonny Horsfield personally taking care of the details. A strong contemporary ambience that centres the interior is achieved by using a contrasting combination of Makassar ebony, eucalyptus and marble. The result is bold and luxurious. “The client is a very experienced yacht owner

and had a very clear concept of the yacht as this is the largest of its type”, says Horsfield. “Tatiana has a contemporary layout with generous living rooms, as well as a huge spa and beach club in the aft which are considered highlights of her design. We tried to bring a crisp and contemporary feel by using a rich palette of colours. Also, the exterior decks have a rich warm theme that completes this design approach. Overall, we are very proud to see a stunning interior that complements the modern lifestyle perfectly.”

Interior details The yacht’s living areas are being finished off at present, with furniture and the last customisations nearing completion. “The increase in living areas normally results in bulky designs, but the Bilgin 263 has a design attitude that will dominate the yachting sector around the world”, says Özgün. “This will clearly make her a trendsetter among steel-aluminium superyachts of today.” In terms of performance expectations from twin 2,560kW MTU engines, Tatiana achieved the

offices located in the West Istanbul Marina. Bilgin’s state-of-the-art marine furniture factory and its comprehensive mechanic, hydraulic, stainless-steel and upholstery workshop allow it to undertake much of the work in-house. Three units of the 80m Bilgin 263 series have so far been sold. The second hull is planned to be launched in 2021. The third hull, scheduled to be delivered to its owner in 2022, benefits from a completely new layout. In addition, construction on a new 85m began in May 2020 with delivery scheduled for 2024. Bilgin also has an on-spec 74m project under construction for a 2022 delivery, as well as a 50m below 500GT superyacht, also planned to complete in 2022. Both yachts have been designed by Unique Yacht Design, both bearing the studio’s signatory modern lines and spacious interior and exterior living areas.

he world’s bustling superyacht cruising grounds have remained eerily quiet since Covid-19 first hit in March. But while cases continue to rise in Africa, Asia and North and South America amid fears of a global second spike, a growing number of Mediterranean countries are declared open for business. Montenegro, Malta and Tunisia are among the top six European countries to record the lowest number of active cases. Figures taken from the

John Hopkins Trust data set on 8 June 2020 show that Tunisia had just five active cases per million population, compared with Spain that had 1,329. And Montenegro has been promoting itself as ‘Europe’s first coronavirusfree country’ since 27 May, when the Balkan country announced it no longer had any active cases of the virus. Kim Williams of superyacht agency Yacht Services Tunisia believes Tunisia’s success is down to the swift action taken early on by the government. “The Tunisian government were very proactive in trying to stop the spread of Covid-19,” she says. “The entire country was put on lockdown on 21 March with only around 50 reported cases. We had a nighttime curfew, Mosques closed, cafes, airspace and international borders closed. We were not allowed to travel from one town to another, even the trains were stopped.”

Mediterranean waters open Popular with charter guests keen to explore the picturesque Dalmatian coast, Croatia was one of the first European destinations to reopen. However, on 18 July following a surge of keen holiday makers, the country announced it was experiencing a second wave of the coronavirus with 116 new cases recorded. Yachts have been allowed to sail and charter in Croatian waters since 18 May. Similarly, on 1 June, Montenegro removed quarantine requirements for all yachts arriving from outside its waters and opened its borders to all countries who have fewer than 25 people infected per 100,000 inhabitants. Montenegrin Prime Minister Dusko Markovic reportedly highlighted Croatia, Germany, and Greece as its ‘target countries’ for the summer season tourist industry but says top drawer destinations, such as the premier superyacht

While superyachts have proven to be some of the safest and most comfortable locations to spend lockdown allowing both owners and charter guests to access the yacht via private jet, seaplane or helicopter, the need to relocate displaced vessels, both private and charter, and even repatriate owners and crew remains key. However, not all yachts have the capability to sail far-away destinations or discover new cruising playgrounds, and this is where yacht transport services come into their own.

across the United States, waters are open to tourism, albeit with some quarantine restrictions in place. Much like its neighboring island of Malta, Tunisia’s three-month country-wide lockdown has also paid dividends. Its effective quarantine period saw Tunisian citizens who were abroad at the start of lockdown safely repatriated, with a required 14-day isolation period spent in hotels at the expense of the Tunisian government. With

Yacht transport services Dutch company DYT Yacht Transport’s semisubmersible carriers are designed solely for yacht transportation. Its unique float-on, float-off system is considered to be one of the safest and most efficient out there, transporting both yachts and crew in comfort and safety to wherever they need to go. Currently under construction in Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore on the Shandong Peninsula in China, Yacht Servant will be the largest semi-submersible vessel in the world once launched in 2021. According to DYT General Manager Laura Tempest, the vessel will elevate yacht transportation to a whole new level. “We sail to our own schedule defined by our clients’ needs, and offer safe, secure passage to all our vessels via the most efficient mode of yacht transport out there”, says Tempest. “The wear and tear that crossing a vast ocean can have on a boat under normal circumstances is uninviting, but during these uncertain times DYT Yacht Transport provides captains and owners with an extra layer of security and peace of mind.”

Kickstart charter Malta was one of the few countries to make a travel ban exemption during lockdown for yachts arriving into port from outside its borders with only crew on board. The yachts were allowed to undertake repairs, refueling and servicing from 5 June in a bid to help kickstart Malta’s yachting industry in time for the summer months. This governmental support was strengthened on 1 July when the island known for its limestone shoreline reopened its airports and marinas. Air Malta has now restored its international flight schedule to and from 22 European destinations. These include the popular yachting hubs of Sardinia, Sicily, Norway, Spain, France, Greece and Italy (excluding Lombardia and Veneto). Foreign visitors arriving from the named countries are not required to quarantine. Further afield in Australasia, Fiji announced its

new VIP Blue Lanes protocol on 22 July, which allows international owners and charterers to access their superyachts via private jet and to cruise in Fijian waters during the quarantine period (without disembarking). With newly relaxed charter laws creating a surge of interest in its colourful waters rich in marine life, Australia is inviting yachts that are currently within its borders to freely charter, too. And in the Maldives, the Seychelles, the Bahamas and

the pandemic contained, Tunisia reopened its border on 27 June. “Tunisia has been through a lot over the past nine years, but each time it rises up against the odds”, says Williams. “With our international borders now open, we should all be very thankful for the swift action that the Tunisian government has taken.”

DELIVERED IN JUNE 2020 AND MANAGED BY IMPERIAL, THE STRIKING NEW BUILD YACHT LANA IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR CHARTER IN THE MEDITERRANEAN.

E

ntirely designed in-house at Benetti, with naval architecture by PierLuigi Ausonio Naval Architecture, the 107m superyacht Lana is a showcase of all that the Italian shipyard can do. Boasting a myriad of mentionable features, including diesel-electric propulsion, Lana is one of the largest yachts built by the shipyard, which is owned by the Azimut|Benetti Group, the largest private-owned luxury yachting group in the world. With a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the 3,900GT yacht includes a helipad, large swimming pool on the sun deck and a luxurious spa, but the owner only took delivery of the yacht in June 2020 once his request to install two Kongsberg wing stations was completed over the winter season. Lana is now embarking on her maiden voyage in Livorno, following what the yard refers to as an “extraordinary and rigorous amount of testing and commissioning of complex equipment”. Carried out by Benetti technicians under the remote supervision and direction of the equipment’s manufacturers, it was made all the more difficult by the remote approach to working that had to be adopted due to Covid-19.

For charter Imperial acted as owner’s representative and build supervisor throughout the construction process and will now continue as operational manager for the yacht, which is available for charter for EUR 1,700,000 a week. “Being linked to the second 100m+ superyacht ever delivered in Italy by the private shipyard Benetti is a pride that we share with the builder”, says Imperial’s Director, Julia Stewart. “It was a pleasure to collaborate once again with their professional teams and their dynamic behaviour in a proactive atmosphere. Lana is bold, unique, sleek and aggressive, boasting high ceilings up to 2.7m in height and mixing perfect experience at sea and unforgettable charter moments.” Commenting on the many destinations already planned for Lana’s seasons of summer cruising, Stewart added: “Lana has an incredible appeal that will make her, for sure, the next decade superyacht charter yacht to experience in her range once in a lifetime.”

The giga era Lana is one of three 100m+ yachts built by Benetti in recent years, propelling the boat

builder into a different league. Coined ‘giga season’ by the yard, the builds collectively showcased Benetti’s investment into new technology, as well as a few notable design collaborations. With that said, Lana’s design is entirely down to Benetti’s homegrown talent, the success of which was reflected when Lana scooped Yacht of the Year award for vessels over 82m at the 2019 World Yachts Trophies in Cannes. “We are proud to have delivered another giga yacht in our giga season,” says Benetti’s President, Paolo Vitelli. Lana is an example of excellence: outstanding quality, unique style, and an icon of Made in Italy. Particular thanks go to the owner who trusted Benetti for this creation. We are happy to have met all his expectations.”

Italian shipbuilding Lana’s interior is said to reflect the fluidity of the sea, with high ceilings and a soft colour palette. In addition to a cinema room fitted with the latest in AV/IT technology and a limitless supply of films, the large yacht also offers a sizable beach club. Its waterside access includes folding terraces and a collection of water toys and tenders.

Powered by twin diesel-electric engines of 2,800kW each, Lana has a top speed of 18.5kts, a range of 5,500nm when cruising at 12kts and carries 34 crew. She accommodates up to twelve guests in eight cabins, seven of which are VIP cabins on the main deck, and one being the full-beam owner’s suite on the bridge deck. Equipped with two private balconies that afford sweeping views, the owner and his guests are also privy to a generous spa that takes in a hammam, gym and treatment room. Commenting on the delivery of his vessel, the owner said: “I am absolutely satisfied with the work done by Benetti and Imperial together. Lana represents a statement of building excellence, every technical feature, every aesthetic element, every single detail was executed to perfection. I am glad we all made this way [sic] to prove a new level of Italian shipbuilding industry.”
