rystal Endeavor has been making waves ever since setting sail on its maiden voyage from Reykjavík this summer. Billed as the world’s most spacious

expedition yacht as well as being the first polar-class vessel of its kind to be made in Germany, the 200-capacity, all-suite ship transports passengers to remote destinations such as the Arctic and Antarctica, all while providing bespoke luxury and comfort with a crew-to-guest ratio of more than 1:1. Underscoring the company’s commitment to the environment, Crystal Endeavor is an innovator when it comes to sustainability too, with builders at MV Werften installing various initiatives including a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment system, environmentally-friendly lubricants for the bow thrusters and stabilisers, a propulsion system specifically designed to reduce lifecycle costs, and smart offshore dynamic positioning. The ice-strengthened liner is also outfitted with hi-tech underwater sonar technology from marine navigation company FarSounder, which helps navigate at shallower depths without impacting the environment. Whilst these achievements certainly got the industry talking, it’s the vessel’s interiors that have won praise amongst guests, with London-based design agency AD Associates dreaming up a series of spaces that combine soft earthy tones with vibrant shades of blue across ten decks. “We have a longstanding relationship with Crystal having worked on projects across their entire fleet, from yachts and river ships to larger ocean vessels,” says Chris Finch, founder

concept S.A.L.T. at last came to life. Billed as an immersive culinary enrichment programme, S.A.L.T. – an acronym of Sea and Land Taste – has been designed to harness the power of food and drink as a means of strengthening guests’ connections to the destinations they visit. The concept aims to enrich their travel experience, encouraging the exploration of cultural culinary references and traditions both onboard and on land. Shore experiences include market trips, winery visits or excursions to local restaurants and bars, while at sea, guests are given the opportunity to participate in food and wine tastings, and attend special dinners, food lectures and cooking demonstrations. “The great challenge and fun of working on a project like S.A.L.T. is that it’s not limited to any one area or region of the world,” says Adam Sachs, Director of the Sea and Land Taste programme. “Wherever the ships will go, we go. So that means we’re looking for great culinary experiences all around the world, both in places that are well known for their food and wine cultures and places we have to dig a little deeper to find compelling, delicious stories to tell.” With the new approach comes a series of new F&B venues that have transformed deck 4 of the vessel into something of an immersive culinary hub. Introducing the Boat Tail Rolls-Royce unveils a new model designed for days out and al fresco dining. In what is described as a seminal moment for the British car-maker, the House of Rolls-Royce has unveiled its hand-built, one-of-akind Boat Tail. Designed and produced to a private client’s exacting specification, the car is named after a unique feature – typically associated with boats – which sees its rear transform into a deck, complete with champagne cooler and parasol. The vehicle is the result of a delve into the lifestyle and desires of the unnamed client, combined with a long-held ambition of the Rolls-Royce design team to create a contemporary expression of the Boat Tail typology, whereby coachbuilders would graft the hull forms of sailing boats onto the rolling chassis of a car. As such, nautical references abound: the wrap-around windscreen recalls the visor of a speedboat; there’s extensive use of Caleidolegno veneer – applied in a feat of Rolls-Royce engineering – much like on a luxury yacht; and the interiors and body – including the wheels – are in varying shades of ocean blue. High-quality finishes include leather upholstery enhanced with a soft metallic sheen, dials adorned with decorative Guilloché engraving – a technique used by fine jewellers and watchmakers – and crystal flakes embedded in the paintwork. The centrepiece however is the deck, which opens at the touch of a button through a sweeping butterfly motion to reveal a hosting suite. Inside, a chest is equipped with accoutrements for an al fresco dining experience, with one side dedicated to aperitifs and the other to cuisine. There’s also rotating cocktail tables and two minimalist stools by Italian furnituremaker Promemoria. “Rolls-Royce Boat Tail challenges the notion of what a motor car is and creates a new definition of what a motor car means,” notes Alex Innes, Head of Rolls-Royce Coachbuild Design. “Boat Tail exists far beyond a mere means of transport. It is not just the method to reach a destination, but the destination itself.”

Pedal Power Having already enjoyed success in the hospitality sector with its natural mattresses and collection of own-brand hotels, Coco-Mat is entering the world of transport thanks to the launch of its handcrafted wooden bikes. The venture is the brainchild of Greek entrepreneur Paul Evmorfidis, a keen cyclist who was determined to find a better solution after breaking down in the Alps. Spending endless hours researching and testing to create a robust, eco-friendly bike that would perform to a high level, he developed Coco-matbike. Made using sustainable wood sourced from certified renewable forests, the bike comes in a range of models, each with a compact frame and ergonomic design to deliver a smooth ride across all road surfaces – there’s even a foldable version for city commuters. The Coco-matbike prides itself on being zero-emissions and carbon positive, and each adult ash tree provides enough wood to make 50 bikes. Furthermore, a new tree is planted for every bike sold as part of the group’s contribution to the environment.

The Pods 1. SOFITEL EN VOYAGE

The first pod from Accor is an architectural parallelepiped of glass and marquetry, creating an intimate atmosphere while being fully open to the outdoors. The organic look of the marquetry – a traditional French skill – is updated thanks to cutting-edge technologies and high-precision laser cutting, creating bodywork that evokes French furniture and haute couture. Entered via glazed doors that slide open automatically, the pod has capacity for up to three passengers on the curved seating, which is upholstered in a bold shade of velvet. A bar for drinks and snacks takes care of the hospitality offer, while technology services include a sound system, induction chargers and configurable mood lighting. There’s also a scrolling LED strip displaying information in real time – such as personal messages and arrival details – and, as proof of the Accor service, a touchscreen tablet connects directly to a Sofitel concierge to arrange a restaurant or theatre reservation for example.

2. JCDECAUX CITY PROVIDER

From the world leader in outdoor advertising systems, the JCDecaux City Provider offers an innovative ondemand urban transport solution that is accessible to all. Easy to board by wheelchair users and passengers with luggage or a pushchair, the pod relies on smart autonomous technology to optimise time and distance between destinations while ensuring a pleasant and peaceful experience. Inspired by JCDecaux’s digital street furniture, this model has a timeless and functional aesthetic, characterised by tones of textured black and satin aluminium grey. Accommodating up to five people, the pod features two facing spaces beneath a green planted roof – an open area protected from the weather by an awning, and a glazed area with mood lighting. Two interactive screens enhance the experience, displaying services for planning and tracking journeys, as well as information on cultural and entertainment attractions, which the pod can travel to on request.

3. PULLMAN POWER FITNESS

Also from Accor, Pullman Power Fitness reflects the hotel brand’s vision for boundary-pushing fitness. In line with its training programme – in which guests are challenged to take their performance to the next level – this pod is designed to make better use of the lengthy commute through the provision of exercise facilities. Characterised by a glass bubble incorporating dichroic patterns that echo Pullman’s graphic and colour conventions, the pod houses a rowing machine and exercise bike, enabling a sole user to enhance their fitness levels on-the-go. The deliberately futuristic concept illustrates the symbiosis between sport, music and light, with a customisable audio and lighting system offering three adjustable modes according to the type of exercise. And true to Pullman’s hyperconnected spirit, a digital instructor appearing on a holographic screen coaches the user, all while providing route information and entertainment for a next-level cardio session.

THE CITROËN SKATE

Autonomous, electric and chargeable via induction, The Citroën Skate (previous page) serves as a universal platform that enables the pods to move around the city. Positioned below the pod, it generates movement to activate the service, and travels to the desired destination at speeds of up to 25 km/h. The Citroën Skate is compact in size yet incorporates all the intelligence and technology required for autonomous travel; special sensors ensure safe driving through the detection of nearby pedestrians, cars and cyclists, while movable hydraulic cushions buffer bumps in the road surface. The wheels, which are revolutionary in their concept and design, were devised and developed by Goodyear and allow for complete 360° freedom of movement so that the pod can travel in any direction. Thanks to The Citroën Skate technology and its open-source approach, the concept opens up new possibilities for the future of urban mobility.

MAIDEN VOYAGE IN THE AIR

Plan C Makhno Studio contemplate life on Mars as the ultimate escape from the global pandemic.

Given the adversity faced by humans on planet Earth over the past two years, there’s many of us who have dreamt of escaping to a galaxy far, far away. Typically, this is little more than a fantasy, but Ukranian design firm Makhno Studio have gone a step further and envisioned a settlement on Mars. “In 2020, during the first lockdown, we wondered whether it was possible to make life underground comfortable if life on Earth became impossible,” explains the studio’s founder Sergey Makhno. “That’s how we came up with Plan B – a proposal for an underground bunker that made headlines across the globe. In 2021, we tried to imagine our lives away from planet Earth, thus we came up with Plan C, a Martian settlement.” The concept is based around a bagel-shaped structure with a protective outer shell that shields inhabitants from radiation and sand storms. Inside, there’s research facilities and a restaurant, as well as a greenhouse to grow food and plenty of plantlife to provide oxygen. The highlight however is the sleeping quarters, where a ceiling screen over the bed displays scenes of the Milky Way. While Plan C may seem like the ultimate escape from the pandemic, there’s no evidence for the possible colonisation of Mars so for now, it will have to remain a flight of imagination.

Flying High Back To The Future predicted humans would take to the skies in flying cars by 2015 while Blade Runner suggested we’d be airborne in 2019. Although 2021 is drawing to a close and we’re yet to see any such vehicles up above, XPeng has reassured its customers that the time is now. Having completed more than 15,000 test flights under affiliated urban air mobility company HT Aero, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer has revealed plans to launch a new generation flying car in 2024. Announced at the company’s annual 1024 Tech Day alongside a series of innovations – including supercharging technology and a revised version of its advanced driver assistance system – the futureproof vehicle is based on a lightweight design with vertical take-off capability – much like a helicopter – made possible through a foldable rotor mechanism for seamless fly-drive conversion. It may have once only been the stuff of movies, but flying cars are now set to become a reality, with many been hailing them as the transportation of the future.

Up, Up and Away The UK is a step closer to urban air mobility thanks to a new partnership between Heathrow Airport and global aerospace and technology company Vertical. The collaboration is set to explore how Vertical’s VA-X4 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle could make use of existing infrastructure to operate from the London airport by the mid 2020s. The agreement is a significant milestone for Britain’s zero-emissions aviation industry, and comes at a time when interest in the future of urban air mobility is growing. A number of major airlines have already expressed interest in the venture, with Virgin Atlantic for example announcing a partnership for the UK launch of an eVOTL network and conditional pre-order options for 150 vehicles. Travelling at speeds of up to 200mph, Vertical’s piloted eVTOL will be able to transport four passengers from Heathrow to the City of London in 12 minutes with zero operating emissions. By working together, both parties expect to help Britain maintain its leading position in sustainable aviation technologies and support moves to a low carbon economy to help meet the government’s ambitions to make the UK net zero by 2050.

proliferation of eco-friendly catering solutions, from Lufthansa’s fresh food packaging – made from an agricultural waste material and produced using 100% renewable energy – to Finnair’s birch cutlery and paper cups and All Nippon Airways’ new meal trays crafted from biodegradable materials such as bagasse, a waste fibre created from sugarcane. For PriestmanGoode, a London-based design studio and consultancy specialising in travel experiences, the uptick in sustainably conscious food and drink packaging is a welcome advancement. In 2019, the firm envisioned a sustainable meal tray made from coffee grounds, which encompasses a dish made from wheat beans and a coconut palm wood spork, offering caterers a new way of curating in-flight F&B experiences. Featured as part of the ‘Get Onboard: Reduce, Reuse, Rethink’

customise seasonally changing dishes via their in-flight screens. The airline has also taken its farm-to-tray initiative to the next level, experimenting with urban farming at New York’s JFK Airport by building the world’s first blue potato farm at an airport. The organic soil that the plants are grown in comes partially from food waste collected at Terminal 5, which is composted by organic farms in upstate New York. Meanwhile, Swiss International Air Lines has come up with the idea of offering its customers unsold fresh food items at a reduced price. The airline has teamed up with Too Good To Go, a mobile app that connects customers to outlets with food surplus, and is trialling the initiative on the last flights of the day from Geneva. The availability of items is communicated via an in-flight announcement and passengers are offered a bag containing

Preciosa Diamond Cloud Diamond Cloud by Czech lighting manufacturer Preciosa is inspired by the Bohemian Diamond Cut and aims to bring maximum brilliance to a space. The Diamond Cut was created specially to emphasise a crystal’s properties in combination with light, before becoming the core design principle for the collection. The suspension of the components and their crafted arrangement, along with the special cut, means that Diamond Cloud excels in the refraction and reflection of light, while the combination of carefully placed triangular rods, with various surface treatments and precise cuts, is what gives the lighting range its geometrically clean and contemporary composition. As the concept is one of Preciosa’s Signature Designs, it is completely customisable: designers can choose the size, shape, component finishes and illumination methods to make the installation their own. www.preciosalighting.com

Creative Matters Celebrity Edge Having created luxurious floorcoverings for many of the world’s most admired retail locations and hotels over the past 30 years, Creative Matters’ recent expansion into the cruise sector was a natural evolution for the company. Through its marine division, Creative Matters works closely with cruise ship designers to achieve their vision while observing any practical constraints. When collaborating with Royal Caribbean Cruises to create the carpets on board its Celebrity Edge vessel, the brand’s marine team used its extensive design and production knowledge to meet colour, design and visual texture requirements with far less sampling, as well as addressing repeat and colour restrictions. In addition to offering a bespoke design service, Creative Matters also has the manufacturing capabilities to offer IMO-certified woven Axminster and hand-tufted area rugs. www.creativemattersinc.com/marine-portfolio

Jung KNX System

Chelsom LED Eye

Every detail of yacht design must meet the high demands of the exacting clientele. Jung’s KNX System – a cross-product and crossnational communication system for data transfer between all smart devices – is billed as the only globally uniform standard for system technology, meeting the tough demands of the yacht sector. The German manufacturer’s units, featuring button and rotary sensors, increase convenience in every cabin and provide more security aboard superyachts. The smart technology can control comfort aspects such as lighting, room climate or multimedia functions, as well as providing security and access control with the surveillance of energy consumption and the supervision of automatic cameras. The unit’s modular design also means the on-board network and system technology can be extended or reconfigured at any time. KNX F50 push-button sensors offer maximum freedom of combination in terms of functions, design variants and materials. Made from real metals that are manufactured in-house at the company’s facility in Schalksmühle, Jung switches create special highlights on board; whether matte stained or finished with aluminium, glass bead blasted stainless steel, brushed brass, chrome plated metal or near 24-carat gold plating, they are precisely processed down to the finest detail. The result is a special combination of high-tech products and high-quality metal materials that together stand out in the maritime sector. www.jung.de

Chelsom has been handed the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2021 for its new LED reading light, LED Eye. The globally renowed contest is judged by a panel of experts from a variety of industries, with thousands of products from over 60 countries evaluated on design quality and innovation. When envisoning the LED Eye collection, Will and Robert Chelsom wanted to disrupt the status quo in reading light design by fusing original aesthetics with raw funcitonality. “The starting point was to create a product that nestled into a headboard with minimum projection whilst serving as a decorative accent to an interior scheme,” explains Managing Director Will Chelsom. “It had to start with the look of the product, but quickly we focused all of our efforts on creating a thoroughly advanced mechanical design that made the LED Eye easy to use and essential to any guestroom.” The highly tactile moulded centrepiece remains extremely slim with a subtle curve at the bottom edge. Once opened, the warm white LED light passes through a focusing lens to create the perfect reading light. The product comes in six different standard finishes: Matt White, Brushed Brass, Brushed Nickle, Satin Black, Brushed Nickle with Satin Black and Brushed Brass with Satin Black, as well as special combinations that create a contrast between the outer vessel and internal moulded eye. LED Eye is CE and UL certified, representing good value given its high-quality function and finishing. www.chelsom.co.uk
