Karoliina Saunders: The Fellowship's ClubStar is an inspirational membership initiative for 16-25 year olds. ClubStar membership brings its own benefits and opportunities the same as full Fellowship membership but only costs £5.95 per month! The ClubStar Art Team was introduced as the icing on the cake for ClubStar members – it gives us the chance to offer affordable education to the next generation of hairdressers and barbers. The Art Team offers an incredible opportunity for young up-and-coming hairdressers to be mentored by the most amazing hairdressers in the industry. Every two years the project has a different project leader.

KS: Passion, enthusiasm, dedication to learn the craft and art of hairdressing from some of the most inspirational names in the industry.
KS: Anyone can become a ClubStar member and enjoy everything the Fellowship has to offer. Each year we then have the opportunity to apply to be on the ClubStar Art Team. This year the application process started on 5 July 2021, with a deadline of 12 August 2021. Each applicant had to complete an online application form, attaching a brief summary of themselves, a digital image of their work and if they want to stand out from the crowd, a short video to support their application!

CH: In a normal year what could a Clubstar Art Team member expect to do? KS: The mentoring programme includes days with various mentors – this year alone we have had meetings and online workshops with session stylist Alistair Jubbs, a day with barber Matt Gavin, a Q&A session with session stylist Anna Chapman and have been interviewed on the How To Cut It Podcast. In normal times, we would work on a photoshoot and appear on stage at Salon International, Pro Hair Live and other events. CH: As project leader what is your role and what do you enjoy most about it?
CH: What do you look for from a ClubStar Art Team member?
CH: How does someone gain a place on the team?

KS: As a mentor I am there to offer them guidance and open their eyes to different paths. I work on a programme that will push their creativity and their thoughts and make them step outside their comfort zone. CH: After their time on the ClubStar Art Team, what new skills can a team member hope to have gained and how can these benefit their career? KS: A new-found confidence in their knowledge about the heritage of the industry and the future trends, new skills and new ways of working. And a new confidence to be the best professional hairdresser they can be.
