BEAUTIFUL BLUE
Hannah Button, freelance hairstylist and Pulp Riot Artist believes blue will be one of the season’s most popular shades. Here's how she creates it.
Get the Look
CALIFORNIA BALAYAGE
California Balayage is taking lived-in hair right back to soft, subtle and low contrast, achieved using a freehand painting techniques. The trick to the California Balayage look is not to lift the hair too light and embrace warm undertones rather than over-neutralising with ashy toners. Try adding warm or neutral tones in with ash to create the perfect honey blonde finish.
1
I pre-lightened hair to a level 10, and cooled it down with purple shampoo. For blues, we don’t want any yellow undertones in the hair as the yellow and blue will mix and turn the hair colour green.
2
Next, I coloured the hair using Pulp Riot semi-permanent colours with a darker blue on the root area for that root shadow vibe.
Lydia Wolfe, Co-founder Jack & The Wolfe and Goldwell Colour Ambassador3
I then blended down into a lighter more pastel blue. Pulp Riot colours fade true to tone, so it will gradually become more pastel with every wash, eventually returning back to blonde.
burst of colour
“Expect a burst of bold colour trends this summer”
This season, expect a burst of bold colour trends, as well as a fresh take on beach-ready balayage.
TREND SPOTTER
Here are more of the shades that will be shining this season.
Colour Trends
PRETTY PINK
Every summer without fail pink is on trend! It is the perfect colour as it suits most skin tones and fades out well. I’d always recommend pre-lightened hair to try this trend. This colour was achieved using Pulp Riot Rose Gold with a split section of Schwarzkopf BlondMe toner in lilac.
Michelle Brace, colour specialist and member of The Hairdresser’s Social Club A-List
VIBRANT RED
This look was inspired by 80s funk and disco. The colour was achieved without prebleaching. I used a high-lift red with three peroxide strengths to give that multi-dimensional feel throughout the hair. Additionally, a marbling technique was created using a sponge to apply colour.
Tracey Devine, Owner, French & Ivi and Global Ambassador for ASP Expert Haircare
QUICK QUIZ
What helps prolong blue hair colour?
A Washing hair in very hot water
B Using an aggressive shampoo
C Washing hair in cool water

HOW TO CREATE Defined Curls on Naturally Curly Hair
From Pivot Point LAB, a bespoke VTCT/ iTEC learning resource, this step-by-step takes you through the procedures for creating beautiful, defined and layered curls, using a shingling technique.
Prepare the hair for styling with a horseshoe-shaped fringe section and centre vertical section.
Apply curl-defining product to the hair, starting at the nape:
▶ Release a 5cm horizontal parting across the nape.
▶ Saturate the hair with water
▶ Comb water through the section
▶ Rub hands together to evenly spread the product across the palms.
▶ Apply the product, holding hair with tension while gliding hands from base to ends
▶ Comb through for even distribution.
Separate small sections within the parting and glide the product along the strand. Use hand-over-hand movement and stretch the hair while smoothing the cuticle and texture pattern. Release the strand, allowing the curls to form naturally.
Work through the remainder of the section, using the same technique. To prevent frizz, it is important not to disturb the curls once they are smoothed and released.
“Rub hands together to evenly spread the product across the palms”
STEP 07
Work towards the top of the head, maintaining consistent 5cm horizontal partings and generous amounts of water followed by the product.
Note: The hair must be damp when the product is applied.
STEP 08
At the front hairline, direct and place the hair where the client wants to wear it for the final look. Take vertical subsections, applying water and products using the same techniques.
STEP 09
Diffuse-dry the hair without disturbing the curl. As hair dries, curls form into their natural texture and are very defined.
QUICK QUIZ
To prevent frizz in curly hair you should:
A Ruffle the hair with your fingers after smoothing it
B Be careful not to disturb the curls once they have been smoothed and released
C Use a hairdryer on full blast across the newly smoothed curls.
Answer: B

Clipso , St Albans
Life
We take a peek at life at the Clipso, St Albans salon to see what they offer their apprentices.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
Here are four great reasons to train and work at Clipso, St Albans according to Managing Director, Simon Cox.
1
We offer in-house training. We train within our own academy for all NVQ Level 2 and 3 qualifications. Apprentices will also complete in-salon training to give them a taste of real salon life.
2
We respect our apprentices. The role of an apprentice is every bit as important as a senior stylist or manager. It’s their job to work with the team to provide a great environment. Their responsibilities include setting up and closing down the salon every day, salon hygiene, stock control and supporting the senior team in all aspects of hairdressing services and guest comfort.
vardering for six to 12 months prior to becoming a stylist. But this can be as long or short as the apprentice wants it to be, meaning with hard work, a positive approach to the training and salon support, it can be shorter.
4
We want apprentices to qualify as soon as possible. Technically, it’s a two-year process to qualify for the NVQ Level 2 and then undertake salon
3
Education never stops. Support is ongoing. It includes in-house training with product companies, courses and hairdressing shows, plus social media learning. For the right team members, there will also be opportunities to progress to competition and photographic work.
“I researched the business to have more of an understanding of what they do as a company”@clipsostalbans
MEET THE APPRENTICE
Ellie Watson has worked as an apprentice for Clipso, St Albans for 16 months and is soon to achieve her NVQ Level 2. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far.
Why did you choose Clipso for your apprenticeship?
Before applying for an interview as an apprentice at Clipso, I researched the business to have more of an understanding of what they do as a company. I saw they had their own in-house training, which interested me, and that some stylists took part in competitions, which I wanted to get into.
What have been the highlights of your apprenticeship?
A big achievement in my apprenticeship journey was winning two awards at The Salon Awards 2022 for Apprentice of the Year and Creative Image of the Year. This gave me lots of confidence to get involved with more competition work. Winning these two big awards made me realise that hard work and dedication do pay off.
What makes Clipso great at training?
Clipso offers something called Model Workshop, which allows apprentices to run a small column with help and guidance from other stylists in the salon. This really boosted my confidence. When I was further along in my training, I got the opportunity to work more independently.
Are your colleagues supportive?
My team members have helped me in so many ways. They share tips and new techniques that help me personalise a haircut. During training, they have allowed me to watch them carry out services on their clients which is a great way to learn and remember skills and techniques.
Is the management team supportive?
My manager, Simon, helped me by letting me express myself through competition work and photoshoots.

Ways I Made it Happen
Daniel Couch is Head of Colour at Russell Eaton Salons and the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Project Colour Team Leader. He is also a Colour Craft Expert for Wella Professionals. Here’s how his inspirational career took shape.
1 BELIEVING I COULD
One of the biggest steps I have made in my career was to retrain at 25. This was a decision that was very challenging both financially and emotionally. Once I achieved my NVQ level 2, the first thing I did was apply for a role with Hob Salons. I was terrified and full of self-doubt. So, in 2012 I did my research into their brand history, dressed the part, and walked into my interview with confidence. I was not leaving without a job.
2 WELLA TRENDVISION
After joining Hob Salons, I took every opportunity offered to me. Once I’d completed a year on the salon floor, I
pushed for the chance to enter Wella TrendVision in 2012. I practised my look six times and did my model presentation to anyone who would listen. On the big night, I won the Gold UK Colour Award. This changed my career overnight.
3
EDUCATION IS KEY
After Winning TrendVision in 2012, I gained some exposure and started educating for Wella Professionals. I was terrified my lack of experience would show through. This is when I made the decision to sit my Wella Colour Expert qualification, which I funded myself.
“Passion and drive are your biggest assets”
4
@danielcouchhair
MAKING THE MOVE
In 2013, I decided to make a move back to the North of the country. I approached Russell Eaton Salons for a job, and walked into the meeting with a proposal of what I could offer them and how I could increase their colour business. This self-belief paid off and I started as Head of Colour.
5 THE FELLOWSHIP
In 2014, I saw an advert for the Fellowship's Project Colour, and I knew I wanted to take part. At the time, people in my work and home life questioned if this would be beneficial for my career, given my recent successes. My gut told me that the project was right for me, and I ran with it. I was lucky enough to be awarded the Fellowship's Achiever of the Year. In 2015, I then worked as the Assistant Course Leader and now I am Project Colour Leader.
PASSSION AND DRIVE
Passion and drive are your biggest assets and if you apply them to your career, stay positive and focused there is nothing you can’t achieve. I mean, if I can do it at the age of 25, think of the success you can enjoy.
“I took every opportunity offered to me”
Summer Hair hacks
During a beach holiday, hair can take the brunt of the sun’s aggressive effects and then there’s the seawater and sand to contend with. Robert Kirby from Robert Kirby London passes these summer holiday hair hacks onto all his clients.
1 Use a leave-in conditioner or conditioning hair mask before you head to the beach to ensure your hair is fully hydrated. The sun is super-drying so your hair needs extra nourishment.
2
Go easy with the heated stylers, the sun is already drying out the hair. Apply some sun protection and leave to dry naturally.
3 Avoid shampoos that contain high levels of sulphates. These will just dry out the hair even more, which is the last thing you want when the sun and heat are already taking their toll on your hair.
4 Use a clarifying shampoo after a day on the beach to wash out all the salt and sand. That way, you’re starting with a clean canvas the following morning. Always cleanse and rinse twice.
5 Keep a mist spray with UV filter handy throughout the day. A quick spritz every few hours will help protect your hair from those potentially harmful UV rays. Think of it as sunscreen for the hair — you wouldn’t expose your skin to the sun without protecting it, so you shouldn’t expose your hair either.
6 Wear a hat or scarf over the hair whenever possible and keep the styles simple and effortless. Think undone braids, loose waves or relaxed ponytails. Plaits are the perfect beach hairstyle, especially when wrapped with a scarf or ribbon for extra protection.
“The sun still causes damage during the summer even if you can’t see it”
heat protection
EVERYDAY CARE
It’s not just while on holiday that clients need to look after their locks. The strength of the sun is stronger during the British summer even when it's cloudy. Here’s how Roman Sys advises his clients at Brooks and Brooks, London to give their hair extra TLC during the summer months.
1 Invest in shampoo and conditioner that have UV protection to prevent hair damage and reduce colour fade. The sun still causes damage during the summer even if you can’t see it.
2
If you are spending a day outside during the summer, use a sunscreen hair lotion and tie your hair up.
3
If you do go on a summer beach holiday, give your hair some extra care when you get home. Use a weekly mask to replenish any lost moisture and invest in a haircut to get rid of tangled and damaged ends.
QUICK QUIZ
What is it best to avoid while on a summer beach holiday?

Whether the service menu is on your website, social channels or in the salon/barbershop, it is vital that the client has easy access to it and that is displays everything you offer.
3 BE HONEST ABOUT WHAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND
4 KEEP IT SIMPLE
Don’t make it sound overly complicated. Share the benefits of any product or service. Clients don’t need to know the detailed science behind everything.
5 MAKE THEIR LIFE EASIER
Making the client's life easier is what it’s all about. Recommend retail products that will help maintain the style, and use them during the appointment to give a taste of what they can achieve.
Never recommend something that you don’t believe in. Be upfront and honest and explain your recommendation and why you feel this would work for the client and their look. upfront & honest

How to Smash your Apprenticeship
Current British Hairdresser of the Year and Global Creative Director at Toni & Guy, Cos Sakkas, knows the value of an apprenticeship. Here are his tips for getting the most out of yours!
1 FIND THE RIGHT SALON
If you choose the apprenticeship route, it will form the foundations of your future career. Are you fascinated by fashion, wanting to get creative on photoshoots, or happy to focus on being a successful salon stylist? Find a salon that shares your passions.
2 DO YOUR RESEARCH
Check out a salon’s website and social media to see the kind of work they are doing. Are you inspired by the cuts and colours they are promoting? Do their team members get involved in activities outside of the salon that you would enjoy? Do you feel the salon or group shares the same values as you?
3
ASK FOR A MENTOR
One of the best ways to learn the skills of hairdressing is to have a mentor within the salon where you are an apprentice. Ask the salon owner or manager if they are able to assign you a mentor from within the team who you can shadow on certain days. Watching up close while an experienced stylist works is a great learning experience. Your mentor should also be there for you to chat with about any concerns you may have and to answer any questions about what a career in hairdressing involves.

let's be inspired
4 WORK HARD
It’s important to work hard and put in the extra time and effort where needed. Hairdressing offers so many incredible benefits, but these will only come your way if you are prepared to put in the hard graft.
5 VOLUNTEER
If your apprenticeship is within a business that gets involved in lots of projects outside of the salon, put yourself forward to help. It could be that you assist stylists on photoshoots or get involved in a charity event. Even if you want a more salon-based career, being seen to volunteer and getting involved will get you noticed and show you’re a team player.
6 SPEAK UP
Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion. It’s important to respect those who have more experience than you, but your ideas still matter. You can offer a viewpoint that other team members can’t so make sure you are heard.
7 GO TO EVENTS
If you have the opportunity to attend industry events, go for it! Attending hair demos, exhibitions and awards is a great way to see other hairdressers at work, be inspired by success stories outside of your salon and have your eyes opened to what an incredible career hairdressing can be. Events like these can help keep you motivated and inspired to succeed.

Behind every hair image there’s a story. Here Syd Hayes, International Session Stylist and Ambassador for BaByliss PRO, talks us through the techniques and tools used to create three hair looks from the brand’s latest collection.
Behind the
BOLD COLOUR TEXTURE VOLUME
TEXTURE BOLD COLOUR
Creating this beautifully textured modern Afro is achieved by keeping the shape round and just breaking it up so it’s not too rigid and structured. We used the BaByliss PRO Italia Brava dryer with a diffuser and an Afro comb to create the perfect shape
Identity is who we are, style is the way we wear it and hair colour is for everyone. This tight candy floss look created with the BaByliss PRO Custom FX Clipper is a high fade. It brings attitude in a fresh way.
Volume is back and it’s bold. We used the BaByliss PRO Ceramic Heated Roller Set to lift the hair, creating bounce with ease. Leave this in long enough to cool and set, then brush out and create that epic volume.

Building resilience
BE PREPARED
Stress is often triggered by certain situations, which will be different for everyone. Try and identify what these triggers are for you, and avoid them if you can. If you can’t avoid them because they are part of your job or studies, try and accept that you may feel a little stressed and look for ways you could deal with it more effectively. Identifying what causes stress is the first step to dealing with it.
BE KIND
Learning to be kinder to yourself can help how you feel in different situations. Try to take breaks in your day for things you enjoy and reward yourself for your achievements, even if they seem small.
BUILD A SUPPORT NETWORK
Support from people you trust can make stressful situations easier to manage. This network could be made up of your friends, family, colleagues, fellow students, or a trusted tutor. Telling the people close to you how you're feeling can make a big difference.
take breaks
BE ORGANISED
Being overwhelmed by the number of tasks you have to complete can lead to stress. Being organised and using time as effectively as possible will help. Make a list of things you have to do and arrange them in order of importance. Try to focus on the most urgent thing first. You might find it helpful to create a timetable, planning when to spend time on each task.
