Advanced Treatment for Hard-to-Heal Wounds

The Wound Healing Center at South Texas Health System®
Edinburg provides outpatient healing services for chronic wounds.
The human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. Usually, wounds heal without medical intervention, but sometimes people develop stubborn wounds that won’t heal. When a cut, blister, burn, or puncture becomes chronic, it’s time to consult a wound care specialist. The Wound Healing Center at South Texas Health System Edinburg can help. Specially trained personnel provide patients with comprehensive care for all types of wounds.
Understanding Chronic Wounds
Chronic wounds caused by diabetes, poor circulation, or other conditions affect more than 6.5 million Americans every year, according to the National Institutes of Health. Doctors consider a wound to be chronic if it doesn’t heal within eight weeks. Wounds like these can be associated with complications from a wide range of disorders and injuries, including:
• Abscess wounds
• Burns
• Cancer
• Insect bites
• Lower extremity swelling
• Slow-to-heal surgical wounds
• Trauma
• Ulcers (diabetic, pressure, venous stasis, arterial)
Comprehensive Specialized Care
The Center’s multidisciplinary team takes a comprehensive approach to wound care, including nutritional assessment and intervention, infection assessment and intervention, and pain assessment and medication. Each patient receives an individualized treatment plan and, when needed, the team will collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including physical therapists and podiatrists, to determine the best course of action for each patient. The Center also offers lifelong follow-up care to help ensure recurrences are kept at a minimum.
In addition, the highly trained team at The Wound Healing Center offers specialized care that a primary care provider typically can’t provide, including:
• Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
• Advanced dressing technologies

• Negative pressure wound therapy
• Bioengineered skin substitutes
Understanding Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
For certain problem wounds, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may be considered as a treatment. Patients are placed in a chamber at an increased atmospheric pressure filled with pure oxygen. This dramatically increases the blood’s ability to deliver oxygen to wounds, white blood cell activity, and blood vessel formation at the wound site. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps decrease inflammation and kill bacteria. It also helps to make antibiotics work better, release new cells and growth factors to repair tissue and speed healing.
In addition to a specialized multidisciplinary team and advanced wound-care technology and equipment, The Wound Healing Center at South Texas Health System Edinburg features private treatment rooms.

Birding in South Texas – How We See Them Matters

If you’ve experienced it before, you know the unrelenting heat of a South Texas Summer. On a hot day, we may find ourselves looking for shade or a tall glass of lemonade. However, access to refreshments or shade does not always come as easily to our aviary friends. At Quinta Mazatlán, we prioritize the restoration and care of the Tamaulipan Thorn Forest, one benefit being that it secures harmony with the species around us, providing habitat in a world commonly masked by concrete and urban chatter. In the early morning, though, when you are eased into a soft wake by bird songs, are you familiar with the being singing? Are you ever curious why they sing? Consider stepping outside to glimpse who may be sitting in the trees or atop the power lines.
In these hurried times, we are encouraged to look to nature to nurture our minds, bodies, and souls. We should also consider how we might reciprocate the gifts shared through the green spaces we hold dear. When we know the birds common and close to us, we welcome the opportunity to expand our community and enrich our culture and the quality of our lives.
While the subtropic humidity slows down birding activity, spring visitors, such as Couch’s Kingbird, Altamira Oriole, and Hooded Oriole, make the south their home while breeding. Among them are regular vagrants such as Green Jay, Whiteeyed Vireo, and Golden-fronted Woodpecker!
Bring your curiosity over to Quinta Mazatlán’s Amphitheater, where native avifauna help themselves to seeds, fresh fruits, and water under the shade of Mesquite, Anaqua, and Texas Ebony trees. Expand your curiosities at home and support birds this summer by providing water in a shallow container or natural foods like oranges, apples, and grapefruits, which nectar takers especially love.
As you meet the rising sun to witness the bright orange Hooded Oriole or the soft green underbelly of a White-eyed vireo, note that the gesture finds prominence in the motives carried behind the adventure sought out. Whether to identify as many species as one can, to be close to nature, or through a genuine interest in the ecologies we neighbor, being mindful of the intent of our practices and life habits gives us greater agency over the relationships we build with our natural world, for today and generations to come.

ETIQUESTIONS
I am new to networking and socializing. What are your best etiquette tips for me as I try to meet new people and develop a strong network?
My best etiquette tip for networking is Use People’s Names! A name is everyone’s most prized possession, and you will be amazed at how doors open when you greet people by name.

A friend of mine invited me to an event recently, and I really didn’t want to go. However, I didn’t know the proper way to tell him I didn’t want to go, so I went. I really wish I had told him I didn’t want to go because it was a miserable evening for me because I had a work project due date the next day. I ended up working all night long (with no sleep) to meet the deadline since I wasted time attending the event.
A common etiquette mistake people make is not being honest and instead saying “yes” or “maybe” when what they really mean is “no.” People feel like the nice thing to do is to say yes but then end up feeling overwhelmed or overcommitted. It is actually good manners, to be honest and say no when you can’t do something. People may be disappointed, but they will understand. The trick is to say no politely and provide a brief explanation.

I have an acquaintance who I see a lot at social events. It is her birthday this week. What is the etiquette about giving birthday gifts to people you know but who are not exactly close friends?
I think it is always great to be kind in little ways. A birthday gift that is small but thoughtful is always a great gesture. Pay attention to what your acquaintance likes. Maybe the person likes a certain color. If so, you could find a scarf or a jewelry piece in that color. As long as the gift is thoughtful, it will be appreciated.

1ST ANNUAL CEO SHARK TANK PROGRAM
The Chamber would like to present an annual program in partnership with HCISD called, CEO Shark Tank Thanks to the support of Chick-fil-A, we were able to receive a monetary donation for the top 3 students that impressed the judges

This program was inspired by the TV show, "Shark Tank" where entrepreneurs get the chance to bring their dreams to fruition by presenting their ideas to the 5 “sharks” (judges) in hopes that they would invest money in their business idea We decided to bring in 6 groups to be part of this first pilot of ours Since the beginning of December, we brought these six groups together for monthly sessions Within these sessions, we had five mentors speak about important topics they should have in their presentations Our mentors were Ricky Leal (Senior Vice President of First Community Bank), Alex Ambriz (Edward JonesFinancial Advisor), Frank Castellanos (Owner of Chick-Fil-A), and Nick Consiglio (Marketing Director from Boggus Ford).
A few session topics the mentors discussed were their marketing plan, business finances, and the value of their products. The student then had to make time to work on their presentations alone or as a group. Once the next session came along, mentors were able to have a one-on-one to revise the student's work and help them with any questions they had. Five sessions later, the students were prepared to present their products to our judges on May 16, 2023. Our Judges were Tito Resendez with State Farm Insurance, City of Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda, and Cameron County Pct. 4 Commissioner Gus Ruiz.

After seeing all the amazing presentations from our six groups, the judges had the final call for the top 3 presentations. The 3rd place winner, Pedro L Coronado III, received a $250 money prize. The 2nd place winner, Emerson J. Williams, received a $500 money prize. The 1st place winner, Brianna N. Cavazos, received a $1,000 money prize.

NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT
Whatdoes it mean to be college ready? This is the question posed to every student in the College Scholarship Leadership Access Program (CSLAP). A 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in McAllen, CSLAP teaches college access classes during the instructional day, after school, and over the summer for high school students across the Rio Grande Valley.
Families who participate in CSLAP gain access to invaluable resources on the college admissions process. From one-on-one college coaching to scholarships, CSLAP expands opportunities for students.
The cornerstone of CSLAP’s work is near-peer mentorship. Through CSLAP, college students and graduates gain a platform to mentor high school students on the college application process. Alumni from local school districts give back to their communities by uplifting the next generation.
During his freshman year at Princeton University, Pharr native Thomas Ray Garcia founded CSLAP to fill in college readiness gaps at Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD. As the first in his family to attend college, Mr. Garcia aimed to provide more support for under-resourced students like himself.

In 2013, CSLAP started as a summer institute that hosted college access workshops and connected PSJA ISD students to recent graduates. In doing so, CSLAP increased the capacity of overburdened school staff to ensure every student who sought mentorship could receive support from a near-peer mentor who was once in their shoes.

CSLAP’s curriculum on essay writing, scholarships, and leadership development formed the basis of PSJA ISD’s University Scholars Enrichment Course for high school students, initially taught by Mr. Garcia. In 2019, CSLAP was incorporated as a taxexempt nonprofit organization and began partnering with local school districts, community groups, and government entities.
Since 2013, CSLAP has continued to grant young people a platform to help their high schools. Through near-peer mentorship, CSLAP aims to increase college enrollment rates and form a support system for students going to and through college.
For ten years, CSLAP has developed hundreds of lesson plans focused on every step of the college application process, including college transition, career readiness, and graduate school. The CSLAP network has grown into a diverse support system of mentors from the Rio Grande Valley eager to help young people achieve their college and career goals.

Parents who wish to learn more about CSLAP’s free after-school and summer programming and rates for one-on-one college coaching can contact 956-533-6156 or info@cslapofficial. com. More information can be found on their website at www. cslapofficial.com.

A CRIMP IN THEIR STYLE

In the River Crossroads gallery at the Museum of South Texas History, a small but heavy artifact showcases the importance of fashion throughout the centuries.
Pleated or crimped clothing has been part of fashion for decades. During the Victorian era, women’s fashions relied heavily on adornments like ruffles and pleats on removable items like collars, cuffs, and hems. When laundered, these sections would lose their crisp shape, and a crimper, or pleater, would be used to reproduce the look.

This crimper has an inner brick that is meant to heat on the stove and placed back into the main box. Pieces of fabric are placed between the two fluted parts, and the handled part would be rolled over the top. Starched water might have been used to help hold the shape. Women in the Rio Grande Valley would have used a pleater like this on their best Sunday dress and special occasions such as the laying of the cornerstone at the new Hidalgo County courthouse in downtown Edinburg.

Visit the Museum of South Texas History to view this artifact in the museum’s General Store gallery.

MOTHER NATURE CAN GET PRETTY LOUD
By Dr. Ruben CastroWe are officially in hurricane season until November 30, 2023, which means that the RGV will likely be hit with moderate-to-heavy bouts of rain. Hopefully, we won’t get hit with a hurricane, but we should always be prepared to deal with the fury of mother nature. Being prepared also means taking all measures to ensure that our dogs are safe and comfortable during a thunderstorm, especially when there is loud thunder. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when we are about to be hit with a thunderstorm to ensure your dog is safe and comfortable:
Play some music or have the television on a moderate volume level to drown out the cracking of thunder and the sound of rain hitting your windows. The normal noise level of your home, coupled with a constant sound from a television or music speaker, will help hide some or all of the sounds that come with a thunderstorm.
Dogs are pack-oriented. Just like you might feel better in the presence of a loved one when you are distressed, your calm, balanced, assertive energy will help your dog overcome a powerful thunderstorm. Let your energy influence your dog.
If your dog gets very anxious, you can give it a massage or a good brushing. This activity will help distract your dog from what is going on outside. If you have a garment that is designed to reduce anxiety, like a ThunderShirt, put it on your dog before the thunderstorm arrives. The snug fit of the shirt does help reduce anxiety, but only if it is on your dog before it gets anxious. Putting a ThunderShirt on a dog when it already has anxiety will only cause more distress for your dog.

Mentally stimulate your dog with toys that are fun for your dog. A good game of fetch also helps your dog ignore the thunderstorm, so it is helpful to have multiple dog toys on hand so that you can switch toys and your dog won’t get bored.
Before the storm arrives, you can take your dog out for a brisk walk. This will reduce any excess energy your dog may have and, more importantly, get your dog tired so that it can sleep through the thunderstorm.
Just like we should have an emergency bag prepared for us if we need to evacuate our home, we should also have an emergency doggy bag prepared. This doggy bag should have everything your dog needs in case you need to leave home for a few days. Even if the area you live in may not flood, the chance of the power going out is high during a powerful thunderstorm. Your doggy bag should have enough resources to last at least five days. Keeping these tips in mind and being prepared will help you and your dog navigate any thunderstorm that comes your way!
