From the Editor
From the Editor Welcome to August,
What a scorching few weeks we have had! We hope you have managed to cope with the weather and are now enjoying the summer we were all wishing for! This month we have been busy once again out and about enjoying various events in the town. We were pleased to have produced two programmes for Stotfold Football Club this month as they held their annual presentation for all 57 Stotfold Junior teams and their annual Stotfold Junior tournament. Watching just one of the many presentations earlier this month really bought home to us the incredible impact the organisation has on hundreds of families in our town. Congratulations to all involved at the club for yet another successful year. Thank you to Nikki Williams for allowing us to use one of her super snapshots for our August front cover - we love seeing the swans by the Mill each year and thought this was a magnificent picture to choose. There are many great items to read inside your bumper August issue, we especially love the memory Lane photograph sent in to us with all names by Elaine Drury (previously Miss Thirnbeck) we recognise a few people on the photo and hope it brings back lovely memories for lots of you too. Last but by no means least, we have an extra special birthday in Stotfold this month as Joan Sale celebrates her 100th Birthday! Many Happy Returns to Joan - most likely Stotfold’s oldest resident - just incredible! You can read all about Joan on page 19 of this month’s edition. Until next month...keep enjoying the sunshine! Joanne

Your Letters Dear Editor, I also cannot understand where the Jubilee benches have been situated in Stotfold, Church Road has a broken bench which has been like it for almost two years - surely one could have been put there? The benches have been put where there are plenty of other facilities - the regional part of Stotfold seems to be forgotten. There is one bench at the chemist but nothing else along the High Street and leading to the new school and football club? Lavina. Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
Thank you for the gift posted through our letterbox anonymously. It was very much appreciated.

Your Letters Dear Editor, My mother Mary Sapsed (Triplow) who is 94 and born in Stotfold would like to share some memories regarding the photo featured in the Down Memory Lane Page sent in by Josie Diffell from the May edition of Stotfold News Magazine. We think the picture is circa 1930, the man on the left is Egger Saunderson with his wife, or Mrs Egger as she was known, in the middle. The woman second from right could be Elsie Rowland and the woman on the end possibly Winnie Tuckey who may have kept house for the Saundersons. The man second from left cannot be identified. The shop was on the Hitchin Road and divided in to a front and rear section, with Egger, when he wasn't tailoring, shaving and cutting men's hair at the back whilst the front section was a clothing store run by Mrs Egger who perched herself on a high stool in the corner. Most of the stock was stored on high shelves wrapped in brown paper and string, marked with thick black ink and accessible by a long pole with a hook, a procedure that my mum was in awe of, not least because of the danger of falling packages. Clothing items for sale included pants (long and short) , vests, bloomers, coms (pants and vests combined) and stays (buttoned vests), and like many shops, credit or a "club " was available to help spread the cost. My mother remembers Mr and Mrs Saunderson as being childless, hardworking and friendly. Martin Sapsed - Editors note: Thank you Mary so much for these memories. We are so pleased this particular photograph evoked so many
recollections for lots of people.

Stotfold Man’s Incredible Cycle For Charity On Saturday 9th July, Stotfold’s Devon Stirton-Croft, completed a massive 150 mile long bike ride called 'Coast to Coast in the day'. This was an epic bike ride, fully organised by Open Cycling UK, to cycle from Seascale on the Irish sea, to Whitby, on the North sea. A 150 mile route, with 4,500 meters or 14,750 feet of climbing, over three National Parks -The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors- taking in some stunning scenery and hills, all in one day! The cycle route started at 05:00 in Seascale, and took in both Hardknott and Wyrnose Passes, with their 25%+ incline hills ; then onto Lake Windermere with a ferry trip across, before heading out over Kendal, Sedbergh, Garsdale & Northallerton and on to the challenging hills of the North York Moors, before arriving at Whitby 14 hours later at 18:54pm.
Devon proudly showing off his race medal
Devon chose to take part in this challenge in aid of two Hospices: St Barnabas Hospice, near Worthing, Sussex, who gave palliative care to his Mum, in her last few weeks, as she battled throat cancer; and for Isabel Hospice, in Welwyn Garden City, where Devon's wife, Alison, once worked.
Devon had originally planned to complete this cycling challenge back in 2019, but with only one month to go, he had a cycling accident whilst taking part in a 100 mile cycling Sportive around Birmingham, and broke two of his ribs. Devon deferred his entry until 2020, however Covid 19 prevented him from riding that year. 2021 was again deferred as Devon was recovering from catching Covid. Waiting for him after the race were his biggest fans, and best support team - his wife Alison, daughter Izzy and cousins from York. Without the support and encouragement from his family, to both motivate him to complete this epic ride, yet alone be a 'cycling widow' during the rest of the year, to get in his many practice rides in with 'Stotfold Cycle Club', Devon says he would never had been able to achieve this amazing challenge. Afterwards Devon and his family celebrated by having "the best ever" fish & chips at Magpies, in Whitby.
A jubilant Devon crosses the finish line after cycling 153 miles.

Stotfold Table Tennis Club With A Difference. RPATT - or Retired Persons Afternoon Table Tennis Club to give it it’s full name, was established in 2016 in order to provide a challenging environment for those players that had played table tennis before and who were looking to keep fit and active. The group, now run from the Stotfold Memorial Hall consists of 32 members ranging from a good level club players to enthusiastic competitors. Players ages range from 64 to 84, with both men and women actively playing on four tables over two days of the week. RPATT are always looking out for new members, however as the club is made up of experienced players the level of skill is fairly high. New members who are perhaps less experienced can be partnered with alternative clubs in the area which RPATT have a great relationship with. The group meet Monday’s and Thursday’s with the cost just £4 per week.
If you enjoy a game of table tennis and are an experienced player, you can find out more by emailing RPATT2017@virginmedia.com

Poppies & Poppyfields Nursery
Poppies Outstanding! We are absolutely thrilled to say we have, once again, achieved ‘Outstanding’ at Poppies Nursery and After School Club! The inspector commented on staff being “extremely knowledgeable about their profession. They stated that “The staff team carefully considers how children's skills can be used elsewhere in their lives. Their extremely strong knowledge of child development and meticulous planning of the curriculum means that children build on what they already know and can do. This helps children to deeply embed learning. Staff carefully observe and intervene at the right moments, with high-quality interactions, to support children's thinking skills.” They also said “Leaders are highly qualified and passionate about the excellent service they provide for children. They proactively instil and share practice with staff, emanating the dedication and desire to give children the best start in their education. Leaders promote staff well-being which means staff support children's welfare to a high level.’ I would like to thank our families for their continued support, our staff who are so dedicated to their roles and our children who make each day so special with their ideas, their conversations, their play, their enthusiasm, and their achievements. Joanne x Established 2010 Fully insured & DBS checked Poppyfields Loving care guaranteed! Our sister group, also ‘Outstanding’ in our October 2021 Ofsted Inspection, has enjoyed exploring artists this month. They have recreated Van Gough’s ‘Sunflowers’, Monet’s ‘Waterlilies’ and painted beautiful landscapes. Both Poppies and Poppyfields have enjoyed watching our caterpillars turn into Call Liz: 07894 561765 chrysalis’ then emerge as ‘painted lady’ butterflies, producing lovely group www.smileypets.co.uk collages of them. Ideas for families to enjoy at home at home could be to go on a bug hunt, searching for bugs and butterflies, creating symmetry butterflies by folding paper in half and then adding paint to one half then closing the paper to create a print. Our breakfast and after school children have also been painting landscapes, enjoying drama and puppetry, building dens, and going on bug hunts. We have had great fun over the summer holidays with our themed weeks! Pirates, circus, sports, and animals have all been enjoyed. Our beautiful outdoor space, with woodland and Spinney provide lovely opportunities for exploring, running, and relaxing in nature. Children also brought their own ideas into Summer Camp as we feel the holidays are ‘their’ time to have fun in ways that are special to them.
Finally, goodbye and very best wishes to our children who are moving on to new schools. We have loved sharing your journey and are always here if you want to pop back for a visit!

Pix Brook Academy
With the end of another academic year complete it is crucial to take a moment to reflect back on the year and celebrate those key moments in the life of the school that is so difficult to do during the term.
Our last big “event” of sports day was a fantastic way to really capture the joy of the summer term. The opening event including a Haka by staff really started the day with a bang and it continued from there. The pupils competed in their tutor groups and were a credit to themselves and the school. Competition was fierce yet fair and all the pupils had an opportunity to be involved. The support throughout the day for all the competitions and races was enthusiastic and the weather, dry but cool made for ideal conditions. We were also really Sewing fortunate to have Darren Miles photographing the entire event, ably supported by the school Social photography club. The final race of the day, the staff 100 meter relay probably brought Join us for a day of sewing once biggest cheer and while modesty prevents me from sharing the members of winning team it a month at the Roecroft Centre, is clear that this could easily become part of PBA tradition. The closing event includes Church Road, Stotfold, SG5 4NE medals and photographs for all winners. A great day. Every second Sunday of the month.
Next dates: 11th Sept, 9th Oct, 13th Nov. (No session in Dec) 10am-4pm. £15 per session. Email sew.social.22@gmail.com to book your place. You need to bring: your machine, an extension lead and your sewing project. We will provide tea/coffee, two irons & ironing boards.
Moving back into the year there are other highlights, Science week was a triumph of organisation and commitment by staff here and parents and others who gave of their time for free. Pupils really enjoyed the variety and expertise shared. The Jubilee event was a great moment and the planting of our Jubilee oak tree is something that should provide a reference point in time as the school grows. Visits by the theatre company; Hitchin museum; Geobus fossil workshop; Willmott Dixon’s sustainability day; the trip to the space centre in Leicester; Red Nose day; world book day; the pantomime and many others all provided those memorable moments for our pupils. The arrival of our first set of SAT results was also a cause for great celebration. Pupils who have had to work through COVID during the last two years were tested against the same standards as in previous years and have performed magnificently. They deserve great credit.
Our hope and plan is to continue to extend the opportunities for young people to enhance their understanding and experience of the world. This is of course in addition to the normal diet of lessons and extra curricula activities that make up the “normal” pupil experience. Next year is fast approaching and the plans are already in place to build on last years events. Enjoy the summer break and we look forward to seeing you in September.

Etonbury Academy
These past few weeks Etonbury Academy has achieved THREE Awards, Sports Mark Gold, UK Student Voice Runner up and Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction! We have also been awarded a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) project led by the University of Hertfordshire following an application from our school. These opportunities led by our dedicated staff really make a difference to our children’s futures.More about these will follow in the next edition.
We were delighted to host the School Sports Festival for our community and were joined by numerous lower schools in the area, supported by our Secondary Student Sports Leaders. Also in sport we held our Interform Netball and Euros competitions which brings out the best in our children, supporting and playing together. Take a look on our Facebook and Twitter to see them in action.
During this term our children have achieved the highest ever number of Friday Praise Texts in one week. Praise Texts continue to be an important part of recognising our children weekly and acknowledging this by sending home a SMS text to their parents and carers. Achieving at Etonbury is not just about the highest Anxiety, Weight Release, Depression, grades, but the effort and work they put in to be the best they can be. We Fears & Phobias, Smoking Cessation, held a ‘Meet Your Mentor’ session across the school also this term for all our Hypnobirthing children to meet their academic mentor and discuss their progress and Hypno-Gastric Band Therapy.... achievements at school. This is a really important part of us getting to know . our children and giving them the encouragement they deserve to reach their Make positive changes to your life full potential. in the comfort of our Stotfold hypnotherapy room. Our children have ventured out on trips to Harry Potter World, Belgium, FREE 15 minute telephone consultation France and the University of Cambridge. Wider events have included our team Glen Russell 07497 157531 of technologists who entered the Robot Rumble competition competing www.thepathwayhynotherapyrooms.co.uk against 11 other teams to be awarded Second prize. A fantastic achievement following months of hard work building their robot, congratulations to all our children involved. At the time of writing we are close to opening our performance of Matilda the Musical, we can’t wait to invite so many of you into the school to see it. We also have visited Baycroft Care Home residents who have had a sneaky preview, and both the children, staff and resident enjoyed the experience. From the community we also welcomed a local lower school to use our facilities and specialist teachers. The children baked biscuits in Food Technology and left with sports certificates of achievement following a PE lesson. June and July are months that bring us mixed emotions as we say goodbye to our Year 11s and welcome our Lower school children for their transition events. The atmosphere was buzzing on the formal transition day when all the children moved into their new forms. Prior to this, our Year 6s moving up into Secondary had already had taster lessons Art, Food, Design and Technology and Music lessons.
We are thoroughly enjoying welcoming the community into the school, supporting their projects and are always happy to show people around our school. We ran a further secondhand uniform event in support of The NEED Project, a very important charity that supports so many of our families with essential food. Thank you for providing us with tins and monetary donations that really do make a difference. It’s a brilliant community, together we care.

They enjoyed their adventure themed activity event and celebrated their last few days with a special church service, disco, talent show and Leaver’s Assembly with parents invited on the last day of term. We wish them all the very best in their new schools. We also enjoyed a number of whole school activities including our wonderful trip to Woburn Safari Park, as well as Writing and Creative Arts weeks. The children have had such a lovely time with many new experiences!
Our Olympic Sports Week was packed with games, races, competitions, contests, tournaments and training! It was great fun and a huge success with the children and we managed to work around the Great British Weather! It was great to be able to welcome our families in to spectate once again. As always there are lots of pictures on the website to view! As a school we are also very proud of our fundraising efforts in conjunction with our parent's association, the SMSA. Despite the events of the last few years our families have helped us raise just under £700.00 towards Children In Need, Save the Children and Comic Relief as well as over £7000.00 towards school funds from the SMSA. This funding has helped towards school events, a new outdoor classroom, IT equipment and various school resources. We have also received a number of very kind donations from members of our community.
Many thanks go to our staff, volunteers, community and families for their continued support without which this would not have been possible. So to end this academic year, we hope everybody has a safe and enjoyable summer break and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday 5th September.

News from Roecroft
Lower School
A very warm welcome to the August edition of the Roecroft news. The end of another school year has come and gone. I am a big believer in reflection and reflecting on the past year it has been one filled with welcome change in comparison to the previous two years we all experienced. The staff and children have achieved so much and are all ready for new challenges when we return in September. An enormous ‘Good Luck!’ to our Year 4 leavers, who had a wonderful send-off over July. Continue to make brave choices and do things with kindness. Reach for the stars! Wishing you all a wonderful Summer, Mrs Cross.
This month we have updates from our Key Stage 2 year group Phase leaders: In Year 3, we started summer term with a trip to the STEM Discovery Centre in Stevenage. This provided a fantastic opportunity to explore areas of Science and Technology and the children had a great time working with interactive exhibits covering the themes of Space, Energy, Materials, Forces and Magnetism. We also got viewing access to the Mars Yards test area, where we got to view the prototype rovers that Airbus engineers are testing as part of the ExoMars project. The children also got to create their own rockets and launch them, which was great fun!
In Geography, the children have been learning about South America and the Amazon Rainforest. We researched many of the animals that live in the rainforest, studied the different layers and produced a nice rainforest collage. In History we have been studying the Maya civilisation in Central America. The children finished the topic by making Maya masks out of balloons and modrock – it was very messy and great fun! On Step Up day, the children got to meet their new Year 4 teachers and are now getting prepared for the move to their next year group. We hope everyone has a great summer and comes back refreshed and ready to learn in September. Mr Stephen
In Year 4, we had a wonderful summer term with lots of exciting activities to celebrate our Year 4 children leaving and moving onto the next step of their learning journey at middle school! Before the end of year celebrations began, we enjoyed our new history topic 'The Ancient Egyptians'. We focussed on Egyptian society and answered big questions such as 'Who was the most significant pharaoh?' and 'Was the River Nile key to Ancient Egypt's success?' We also had a topic day where the children had great fun dressing up and performing a burial complete with a life-size coffin! In English, we explored Egyptologist Howard Carter and wrote diaries pretending we were the ones to discover Tutankhamun's tomb. Another highlight of the term was exploring levers and linkages in DT and creating persuasive moving posters, the children showed great passion for looking after the world and persuading people to become more eco-friendly citizens. On Geography Day, we also enjoyed researching Canada and creating All types of electrical work undertaken. travel brochure posters using our new-found knowledge. Installation, Fault finding, Heating controls. In July, as well as putting on our Leavers show for parents 'The Roecroft Late Test and inspection, EV charge points, Late Show', we had a party on the playground with a disco and ice cream van NICEIC approved contractor. and created yearbooks as a memento of the children's time at Roecroft. I would like to again take the opportunity to wish our wonderful Year 4 leavers Tel: 07817 545314 the very best of luck at their new schools! E:bk.electrical@outlook.com Miss Hougton.

News from Fairfield
Park Lower School
As you are reading this article we will be beginning our summer holidays and hopefully enjoying the summer sun.
This last half term has been a busy one at Fairfield Park! The children proudly paraded in all their finery, chipping along to the beats in the inaugural Fairfield Park Carnival. All the children experienced different types of carnival-inspired workshop from costume creation to soca aerobics to steel pans and drumming so that they could really be immersed in all things carnival. Rampage MAS band were our specialists who perform in the Luton Carnival and also all over the world. The rainbow parade danced around the school grounds to applause from parents and carers who lined the streets and those lucky enough to be allocated tickets for the showcase performance. It was a fantastic opportunity for children to experience such a rich cultural experience. We were very excited to invite Sean Rose, a paralympic athlete, into our school at the end of June! He ran a sponsored fitness circuit with the children, which involved spotty dogs, star jumps, press ups and mountain climbers! After this he hosted an assembly to all the children where they found out all about his inspirational achievement! We’ve also enjoyed seeing the children and families come together for sports days and our annual talent competition – Fairfield’s Got Talent.
Have a safe and happy summer holiday. We wish our Year 4 Leavers lots of luck at their new middle schools and look forward to welcoming everyone else back to school after the summer break. Value of the Half Term: Co-operation

HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY JOAN SALE!
Joan Sale celebrated her 100th Birthday on Saturday 16th July 2022 with friends and family gathering to celebrate! Joan has lived in Stotfold since just after the Second World War. Anyone who has spoken to her knows that she’s not really a local girl you can take a girl out of Nottinghamshire but you can’t take Nottinghamshire out of the girl! During the war Joan served in the army at Ripon where she met her future husband Peter. After the war, Joan and Peter married and moved to Stotfold, Peter's home town, first moving into a Flat on Trinity Road and then into Joan's present home on Princes Street. Peter found employment at Jones Cranes in Letchworth and Joan was dinner lady at Roecroft School for over twenty years. They brought up their two children Pat and Derek in Stotfold and many readers will remember them too. Joan now has five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Congratulations Joan! Wishing you a very Happy Birthday Joan!

Watermill
Our Education Team
The Articles of Association pf the Stotfold Mill Preservation Trust state that its Objects include: ‘maintenance of the working mill …for the education and benefit of the public.’ and ‘management of the nature reserve and the education of the public in the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the flora and fauna’ Consequently, one of the most important of our volunteer groups is the Education team. With a dozen members, many of them former teachers, the team offers an exciting range of experiences and learning opportunities to parties of children. Recent school visits have been Year 1 from Roecroft Lower School, who particularly enjoyed grinding their own flour to take back to school with them.
Early in July, two classes from Year 3 at Bassingbourn Primary School spent a whole day visiting both the mill and the nature reserve. Whilst in the mill, they not only learned how the mill turns wheat grain into flour and oats into porridge but they also spent time with hands-on experience of building systems of gears similar to those driving the mill machinery. During their time in the nature reserve the pupils were able to complete activity sheets related to the wildlife they observed and to make leaf rubbings from the brass plaques along the paths. It is hoped that freedom from Covid risks next year will allow many more schools will take the opportunity to bring classes to the mill. We appreciate that the cost of transport can be prohibitive for some school trips out but we are able to offer a whole day of activity and learning experiences at a very much lower cost than most places that groups might visit, whist tailoring the theme of the day to the topic that the teacher is covering. Other parties of children coming to the mill are often members of scouting groups, such as cubs and brownies, when we can focus the visit on the requirements of particular proficiency badges. We already have two cub packs booked to come pond-dipping in early September. Members of the Education team also organise activities for children ages 5-11 during the summer holidays. Details of these can be found on the mill website at www.stotfoldmill.com/category/childrens-activities. Although they are possibly fully booked at this time, names might be added to a reserve list. Many Sunday afternoons when the mill is open members of the Education team are present in the Ivel Room at the top of the mill with games and activities for children including the opportunity to dress up as a traditional Victorian miller or his wife.
If any grown-ups are envious of the opportunities that we make available to children, it should be pointed out that we are always prepared to take bookings for guided tours of the mill by organised parties of adults. These are preceded by a visual presentation about the history and restoration of the mill and can always be booked to include a cream tea or other refreshments. Details of booking a tour can be found on our website. Wildlife lovers can visit the nature reserve at any time but we are hoping to offer the opportunity of a pond-dipping session for adults or an evening bat walk. Watch out for details on the website or our social media pages.
THANK YOU EVENING At the end of June, the Trustees held a social evening to thank all the volunteers who have helped at the mill during the year. We understand that a few of our volunteers did not receive an invitation to the event. We offer our most sincere apologies for the omission. This can only have occurred if you have been a volunteer but your name is not on our email data base – our only method of communication to our many helpers. if you believe this might be the case, please let us know by sending your email address to volunteersupport@stotfoldmill.com. If you are not currently one of our volunteers but might consider joining on of our teams please visit our website to find out more about the opportunities we offer. www.stotfoldandarleseynews.co.uk

We were so pleased to welcome visitors once again to the Summer Exhibition in the Ivel Room at Stotfold Mill during the latter part of July.
Our very first exhibition was held in 2010 in the undercroft of the Methodist Church on the crossroads. We were encouraged to show our work by Jenny Beckett, who organised the event. Jenny has been an Art Group member for over twenty years and she has continued to play a part in exhibitions ever since, overseeing the craft and art sales.
Jenny prefers to work in watercolour and on a small scale, often with great detail. She is a skilled craftslady and sells cards and crafts locally through church and community fairs. Pictured this month are two examples of Jenny’s work - the first, a beautiful painting of Norton Church and secondly, a wonderful painting of a red kite. Stotfold Calendar 2023 By popular demand we have joined forces with Stotfold Town Council once again this year to produce the ‘Stotfold in Pictures’ calendar for 2023. Last year, all money raised from the sale of the calendars was donated to the Stotfold Christmas Lights fund. WE ARE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR NEW PICTURES!
As you will recall, during the latter half of 2022 we asked you all to send us in your photographs taken in and around our town. If you have been out and about over the past 12 month’s and have a keen eye for a good shot then why not send it in to us to be considered? Our usual email address applies: stotfold.news@yahoo.co.uk - simply add the header of Calendar Competition into the subject line.
We will be distributing all calendars at many of the festive events due to be held in Stotfold this year, including the Community Christmas Fayre and the Christmas Light switch on event, held in December. The calendars make wonderful Christmas gifts, with many being sent to ex-residents of Stotfold as a momento of their home town -Such a lovely idea!
We need photographs from all seasons and from all over Stotfold. Maybe you have just moved in to one of our new areas of Stotfold and can send us in a great photo of where you live?
We are planning to run a facebook campaign to remind everyone of the deadline for entries. Photos can be sent to us through our social media platforms or by hard copy if you are unsure as how to send them digitally through email. Just give us a call on 01462 731986 if you have any questions.
Last year we received over 200 entries - we would very much like to beat this record for 2023...

This great bunch of lads will be playing in the Chiltern League Div 2, Please contact JP Ryan at jpr1978@hotmail.co.uk if your son is interested. Also our U11’s (U10 last season) are looking for an additional 2 players to strengthen their squad. If you are looking for a new team please message Gavin Young 07717834941 or gpy0ung1974@gmail.com Registration for 22-23 season is open via the documents section of the website www.stotfolduniorfc.co.uk please get the players registered ASAP. Under 13 Lilacs win League Cup final, well done John Clarke and the team. On a very hot day in May, we travelled to Cranfield for the league cup final. We were against a very good Escolla side who had recently convincingly won our league and finished 36 points ahead of us. The game was tight, played with a tremendous spirit and we were very well supported. We were strong throughout the game and didn’t allow our opposition any opportunity to settle. We took the lead in the first half with a well worked goal only for our opponents to equalise on the stroke of half time!! It was a fair score considering how well both teams had played. We started the second half strongly and controlled most of the half. We took the lead again from the penalty spot only for the game to be levelled again within 90 seconds. The game went to penalties and we scored our first 4 and won the game 4-1. And from there it was a party. Well done Amber girls, we had a fabulous day and will remember it for a long time. Lastly a few thank you’s. Sponsors, managers, helpers and the committee, thanks for all your efforts the junior teams could not play without you, we appreciate your support.

Methodist Church
I was fortunate to visit Anglesey Abbey earlier this year. The gardens contain some beautiful ornamental paths, leading to another lovely view. I was thinking about this in context of life decisions. It was easy to decide which path to follow in those gardens, but that’s not often so easy in life.
In a time when people are looking for guidance and leadership, I’m remembering a verse from the Bible where the writer declares to God “your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119). The writer was referring to the law of God as it was given to the Hebrew people. Many years later, Jesus was questioned by a lawyer, a person who studied that very law. Jesus asked him what he thought was the most important parts of God’s law? The lawyer replied “you shall love God and love your neighbour as yourself”. Jesus commended him for a good answer. But the lawyer asked Jesus “who is my neighbour”? Then Jesus told him the story of the Good Samaritan. This is the story of a crime victim who was left to die at the roadside. In the story, two different religious leaders saw the victim but walked by on the other side of the road. Lastly a man from Samaria took pity and risked much to rescue him. At the end of the story, Jesus asked the lawyer which of the people in the story was the neighbour to the crime victim. The lawyer replied it was the one who showed him mercy. Jesus said to him, “go and do likewise”. My hope is that mercy will continue to be our guiding light in the decisions we make, as members of families and communities, as leaders and as neighbours. God help us to follow that lamp to our path. The Methodist Church Coffee morning is on the first Saturday of the month as usual, 10am to 11:30. Monday Club is not running in August. News from King’s

Writer Edward Grinnen has commented that “tomorrow is always uncertain.” So how do we face the unknown future? Sooner or later, we will all come to a place where we have to commit ourselves, our loved ones, our past and our future, our hopes and dreams, our memories and our imaginings—we have to commit it all to God. We will all have to trust God. We will all come to the place of surrender.
It is not easy to surrender everything to God. The word ‘surrender’ suggests weakness, defeat, and hopelessness. It means to give up. It means to stop fighting. It means to come to the end of ourselves. For most of us, that’s not a comfortable place to be. But when it comes to peace with God, surrender is necessary. But rather than being a symbol of weakness it becomes the access point to a new strength, a new courage, a new identity, a new nobility, a new purpose—and a new relationship with God. Peace with God is not merely the cessation of hostilities, but the embracing of a whole new life, a new identity. Here is Grinnen’s quotation in full: “Tomorrow is always uncertain. The future is not ours to know. Yet we are Are you suffering with foot health given a knowledge far greater than the ability to see into tomorrow. God invites to seek him out, to follow after him, not because of the things he can give us or the things he can do for us, but because we desire him, because we want to know him and enjoy him. Speaking through the prophet Jeremiah, God said “If you seek me you will find me if you seek me with all your heart.” When God gives us peace, he gives himself.May you all know the comforting presence and the life-changing power of God in your lives.

Behind the scenes at
Luna Animal Rescue
Many readers may have heard about Luna Animal Rescue but do you know what it is they actually do? We took the opportunity to talk to Natalie Howe from Luna, to find out what it is they do exactly and how local people can help get involved...
Luna Animal Rescue was founded in 2013 to rehome dogs in need. Since then it has grown into a much larger network of foster homes, adopters, volunteers and of course donators. Luna now rehomes small animals, cats, dogs and ponies at times, and has taken over the farm now known as LARCH farm behind Etonbury Academy. LARCH farm is home to a cantankerous goat, 2 ponies, 2 pigs and a horde of other birdlife where they all live in sanctuary. Luna is run purely by volunteers, with no paid staff, just a band of people who help to rehabilitate and care for animals who have met hard times and need that step on the ladder to get to a happier life. To fundraise, Luna run dog shows, have days up at our charity partner store at Pets at Home, Biggleswade, and run auctions and raffles online, as well as quiz nights and music festivals.
Luna has recently started to run neutering campaigns promoting responsible ownership and to help to reduce unwanted litters, at a time when rescues are at an all time crisis point, with hugely oversubscribed numbers if pets unwanted and needing help. Luna is also working within the community to support those struggling financially currently, and will try to assist with feeding and parasite control for pets as we can, within the local area. At Luna, we really value education, and love to give talks to schools and groups and bring along some of our animals to say hello. Feel free to contact us if you would like to have us come and do one of these.
Things to look out for... watch out for our up and coming music festival in Shefford. If you like puppies....watch our Facebook page and see our new litter of babies born recently to a stray pound dog we took in. Find us at www.lunaanimalrescue.org or on Facebook at Luna Animal Rescue
The Stotfold News Magazine are pleased to announce that we plan to feature animals in need of rehoming in some of our forthcoming issues. Rehoming an animal is incredibly rewarding and Luna Animal Rescue are excellent at making sure that animals are placed in the right homes. Keep an eye on our future issues for more details....

Memory Lane
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Elaine Packenas. This prompted me to dig out the photograph of the very first class I taught in my teaching career at St Mary’s School, under the guidance of head Miss Rosser way back in 1964 as I well remember this bright young fair haired pupil in my class.
I believe Elaine’s family emigrated to Australia when she was quite young. Looking at all the other members of this class brought them all back to mind. With the help of some of these pupils who I am still in contact with 58 years later, I hopefully have got all the names correct on the picture you see here. Ladies change their surname when they get married so more difficult to keep track, but I do wonder how many of this class and indeed those in other classes the following two years may still live in Stotfold. I have known hundreds of students during my many years of teaching, but it is such a brief moment of time in their lives. I hope that brief moment was a good one. Elaine Drury (Miss Thirnbeck)
