The big news in Zuidas this January was the opening of another iconic building: Nhow Amsterdam RAI. The new hotel wants to create a social and multicultural meeting place for business travellers, tourists and Amsterdam locals. This ambition aligns well with aims to alleviate crowding in the city’s historic centre, by attracting people to visit and stay in Zuidas. So far this has resulted in plans to extend the Noord/Zuid route all the way to Schiphol and the Zuidasdok project. With Nhow’s arrival, Europaplein is set to play a key part in these developments. Have you stopped to admire Nhow’s iconic three triangles yet? Olivier Otten, managing director of Hello Zuidas

SJOERD LYCKLAMA • FLOW DEVELOPMENT

Tripolis-Park: a bustling urban campus in Zuidas Sjoerd Lycklama, partner at FLOW DEVELOPMENT

The Tripolis complex along the A10 motorway is set to be transformed by FLOW into a bustling urban campus and home to Uber’s new 30,000 m2 headquarters. Innovation and high standards of use and health are keywords for the development. A Municipal Monument, Tripolis was built in 1994 and consists of three towers designed by architect Aldo van Eyck. The renovation by FLOW will preserve the existing structure and integrate it with the new “landscraper” designed by architect Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV. Conceptually, the design protects and embraces the existing iconic towers while adding a spectacular new rectangular edifice – ‘the landscraper’ – that links two of the towers. Positioned parallel to the A10, the new building is to accommodate a mix of start-ups, scale-ups and corporates. There will be space for food outlets, and all the buildings will get public rooftop gardens. Hello Zuidas talked about the project with Sjoerd Lycklama, partner at FLOW DEVELOPMENT. In the next two years FLOW is going to develop a

In addition, the technical installations on the roof will be removed to make room for a new green rooftop landscape, activated with glass pavilions for dining, meeting, meditating and lots more.’

What’s being done about road access to Tripolis-Park via IJsbaanpad, which is often gridlocked during rush hour? Have you come up with any smart solutions?

THIS IS WHAT THE EXTRA TRAVELER TUNNEL UNDER AMSTERDAM ZUID STATION WILL LOOK LIKE

FOUNDATION PILES FOR THE NEW TRAVELER TUNNEL ARE PROVIDED WITH REINFORCEMENT (BELOW) AND FILLED WITH CONCRETE (ABOVE)

INTRICATE PUZZLE In the first weekend of last November we slid the first roof section for the new station passageway into place. That leaves another six roof sections to go. Scheduling this work is an intricate puzzle. Construction projects have to apply for suspension of train services from railway manager ProRail at least 18 months in advance. There’s a good reason for this, since ProRail runs the nationwide railway network and has to coordinate rail works all over the country. ProRail aims to combine or synchronise works to maximise efficiency and minimise disruptions for travellers. Piecing together that national puzzle takes time.

HALF OF ALL YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WANT TO SWITCH JOBS IN UNDER TWO YEARS Research has shown that starters on the job market are unhappy about growth opportunities, company culture and management, and almost half of them start looking for new jobs within the first two years. Recruitment platform Magnet.me conducted a survey among over 300 employees having under ten years of work experience. Although almost 80% said they were happy in their jobs, mobility remains high. Some respondents said this was due to the fear that their temporary contracts would not be extended, but four out of five job seekers leave of their own volition.

As was the case in 2018, Loyens & Loeff last year again advised in the largest number of M&A transactions. The firm overtook Allen & Overy in the second half of 2019 and after that remained in first place to top the 2019 M&A League Tables with 65 deals. In the year’s closing quarter, Loyens & Loeff advised in various acquisitions including DPG Media’s acquisition of Sanoma’s activities in the Netherlands (from Donald Duck to Nu.nl; a deal worth €460m) and in French giant Vivendi’s purchase of Hilversumbased Universal International Music, to the tune of €3bn. 2020: A GOOD YEAR TO HOP ON A BIKE Starting this year, the government has simplified rules for business use of bicycles – both regular and electric bikes. Previously, employees had to keep a record of all business rides, but that’s now been replaced with payment of a fixed gross 7% addition for the use of a business bike. Employees who also use other forms of transportation will continue to qualify for a tax-free commuting expenses reimbursement of 19 eurocents per kilometer. In other words: there’s no better time to switch to a bike! In 2020, 100 commuters in Zuidas will have a chance to try out an e-bike or speed pedelec for two weeks. GBC Zuidas will start off with an e-bike try-out open to employees who live ten kilometers or further from Zuidas and normally commute by car. Interested? To apply, contact Diederik@greenbusinessclub.nl.

SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2019 PRESENTATION: DON’T MISS IT! The 2019 edition of the Zuidas Sustainability Report will be presented on 9 April, at Mobility Experience Move. The Sustainability Report is a publication of the Zuidas Amsterdam Development Office, Hello Zuidas and Green Business Club Zuidas, and provides a complete overview of sustainable initiatives spearheaded by businesses, government and non-profit organizations in Zuidas over the previous year. The official presentation is a festive and inspirational event, showcasing the most notable initiatives and offering an opportunity to network for new sustainable projects. Don’t miss it! 9 April, 3:30-5pm at Mobility Experience Move (Stadionplein 28), with drinks to follow. To attend, send an email to servicepoint@hellozuidas.com.

PRINTLESS IS MORE On 30 March Green Business Club Nederland will be launching another national PrintLess Contest. Last year’s competition attracted twenty companies nationwide, including four in Zuidas, which battled for the greatest reduction in printer use over two whole months. In the final count, the contest saved an impressive 796,661 sheets of printer paper! At the end of this month companies and regions will again start vying to print as little as possible. Their aim: to reduce paper use, boost awareness about printer use and change behaviour over the long term. To sign your company up for the GBC PrintLess Contest 2020, contact Lotte Gottschal: lotte@greenbusinessclub.nl.

Maartje Oome is communications manager for Green Business Club Zuidas, a organization that has businesses cooperating in launching sustainable initiatives and achieving sustainability goals. THE OLYMPIC AMSTERDAM GRAND OPENING Following a major renovation, a new area christened ‘The Olympic Amsterdam’ celebrated its grand opening last month. Retired politician Hedy d’Ancona did the honours by lighting the Olympic flame.
