he back cover of a book, like movie trailers and television commercials, are often misleading. If you come across one that reads like the one on the back of Álvaro Enrigue’s Sudden Death, be wary. However, as sometimes happens with trailers and commercials, there are exceptions where so much is true and it is possible to encounter a noble work of art. Now, it’s difficult to describe what Sudden Death is

ENGLISH about. The novel dives into a huge part of the 16th century in Spain, Italy, France and England and offers an alternate view of the conquest of Mexico.
A PAINTER AND POET
The book begins with a tennis match between Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, the Italian painter who invented chiaroscuro and changed the history of art, and Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas, one of the greatest scribes of Spanish poetry. The match plays out throughout the book. While Caravaggio and Quevedo serve, defend and trade points and insults with each other, Enrigue takes the reader through the history of Italy, Spain and Mexico. Si uno se encuentra con una que concluye: “Muerte súbita se vale de todas las armas de la escritura literaria para dibujar un momento tan deslumbrante y atroz en la historia del mundo que sólo puede ser representado mediante la más venerable y maltratada de las tecnologías, el artefacto cuya regla de oro es que no tiene reglas: Su Majestad la novela. Y estamos ante una novela realmente majestuosa, de enorme ambición y gran calidad literaria”… si uno se encuentra eso, hay que desconfiar.
