Sara Manzano-Díaz is an example of what has happened to hundreds of thousands of migrant families who came to the United States in search of a better tomorrow. And with her, too, it continues to be proven that it is not enough to arrive, but that it takes e ort to overcome obstacles and achieve one’s goal.

She is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents who, when they arrived in the United States, did not know how to read or write, which was no excuse for being clear that education would be the best way to achieve their goal.

She studied law and has held various positions of responsibility. Among other positions, she has been Managing Director of the Treasury Department in Camden, Undersecretary of State in Pennsylvania and Director of the O ce of Women’s A airs, appointed by President Barack Obama. In the latter position, she helped to ensure the economic security of working women. Also, she advocated for working women across the country by helping them achieve economic security. In 2021, she was appointed Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

She was chosen to receive the Women of Merit Lifetime Achievement Award this May 19th as part of AL DÍA Women of Merit 2023, which recognises those who excel in their daily lives for the work they do to make this a better society.

“I dedicated my career to public service and advocacy for minorities, women, girls and the most vulnerable”, she said.

Among other women, Erika Guadalupe Núñez will also be honored in the Emerging Leaders category. She is the executive director of Juntos, a local organization that defends the rights of immigrants. Erika is Mexican and came to the United States with her mother as a child. She studied in Philadelphia, where she worked against deportation. “I started organizing at a young age and it really came out of my personal experience as an undocumented person and people insulting me when I was younger”, she told AL DÍA.

As an artist, she has re ected the condition of immigrants in her work. “I think art helps to build power”, she said.

Sara Manzano-Díaz es un ejemplo de lo que ha ocurrido con centenares de miles de familias migrantes que llegaron a Estados Unidos buscando un mejor mañana. Y también con ella se sigue poniendo a prueba que no basta con llegar, sino que se requiere de esfuerzo para superar obstáculos y lograr el objetivo. Es hija de padres puertorriqueños que cuando llegaron a Estados Unidos no sabían leer ni escribir, lo que no fue excusa para tener claro que la educación sería el mejor camino para lograr la meta.

Estudió Derecho y ha trasegado por distintas responsabilidades. Entre otros cargos, ha sido directora gerente del Departamento del Tesoro de Camden, subsecretaria de Estado en Pensilvania y directora de la O cina de la Mujer, nombrada por el Presidente Barack Obama. Desde esta última posición ayudó para la seguridad económica de las mujeres trabajadoras.

En este último cargo, Manzano-Díaz abogó por las mujeres trabajadoras de todo el país ayudándolas a alcanzar la seguridad económica. En el 2021, fue nombrada Comisionada de la Junta de Control del Juego de Pensilvania.

Ella fue elegida para recibir este 19 de mayo el Premio a la Trayectoria de una Mujer de Mérito, como parte de AL DÍA Women of Merit 2023, que reconoce a quienes se destacan en su diario vivir por la labor que desarrollan para ser de esta una mejor sociedad.

“Dediqué mi carrera al servicio público y a la defensa de las minorías, las mujeres, las niñas y los más vulnerables”, explicó.

Entre otras mujeres, también se premiará a Erika Guadalupe Núñez en la categoría de Líderes Emergentes. Es la directora ejecutiva de Juntos, organización local que de ende los derechos de los inmigrantes. Erika es mexicana y llegó a Estados Unidos con su mamá siendo una niña. Estudió en Filadel a, donde trabajó contra la deportación. “Empecé a organizarme a una edad temprana y realmente surgió de mi experiencia personal como persona indocumentada y de que la gente me insultara cuando era más joven”, dijo a AL DÍA. Como artista que es, ha re ejado en su trabajo la condición de los inmigrantes. “Creo que el arte ayuda a construir poder”, manifestó.

Desde marzo del 2022, Guadalupe Núñez es directora ejecutiva de Juntos.

Carlos Claussell Velez is a climate change and environmental professional who has dedicated his career to advancing climate and environmental justice and equity at all levels.

He currently serves as the Climate, DEI and Environmental Justice Manager for the World Wildlife Fund, and is also a Commissioner for the City of Philadelphia’s Environmental Justice Advisory Commission.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Claussell Velez is the son of a civil rights and labor lawyer and psychologist. e unique combination of his parents’ professions has heavily in uenced his approach to his work.

He earned his bachelor and master’s degrees from Universidad de Puerto Rico in civil engineering and architecture, respectively.

THE BASIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Claussell Velez’s work in Puerto Rico laid the foundation for his environmental justice advocacy.

While on the island, he had roles such as design manager and consultant, working with a group of architects, planners and engineers on various projects.

However, his most prominent role was as urban and infrastructure program coordinator for the Caño Martín Peña Community Land Trust, focused on community-led equitable development.

When discussing the concept of environmental justice, Claussell Velez is very detailed about what entails.

“When we say environmental justice, we’re talking about a social movement that’s committed to addressing environmental injustice and environmental racism to build a social system in which environmental policies and practices bene t all people, regardless of race, color, national origin, income or wealth,” he said.

As Claussell Velez has advanced in his career, that overarching goal has been at the forefront of his e orts.

BRINGING SOLUTIONS TO PHILADELPHIA

In the a ermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017, Velez made the decision to move from Puerto Rico to Philadelphia.

Nacido y criado en Puerto Rico, Claussell Vélez es hijo de un abogado de derechos civiles y laborales y de una psicóloga. La combinación de las profesiones de sus padres ha in uido mucho en su formación, que incluye una licenciatura en ingeniería civil y una maestría en arquitectura, ambas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico.

LA BASE DE LA JUSTICIA MEDIOAMBIENTAL

El trabajo de Claussell Vélez en Puerto Rico sentó las bases de su defensa de la justicia medioambiental. Durante su estancia en la isla, desempeñó funciones como director de diseño y consultor, trabajando con un grupo de arquitectos, plani cadores e ingenieros en diversos proyectos.

Sin embargo, su cargo más destacado fue como coordinador del programa urbano y de infraestructuras del Fideicomiso de Tierras Comunitarias Caño Martín Peña, centrado en el desarrollo equitativo dirigido por la comunidad.

Al hablar del concepto de ‘justicia medioambiental’, Claussell Vélez es muy detallista sobre lo que implica: “Cuando hablamos de justicia medioambiental, nos referimos a un movimiento social que se compromete a abordar la injusticia y el racismo medioambientales para construir un sistema social en el que las políticas y prácticas medioambientales bene cien a todas las personas, independientemente de su raza, color, origen nacional, ingresos o riqueza”, explica.

A medida que ha ido avanzando en su carrera, ese objetivo general ha estado en el primer plano de sus esfuerzos.

George Santos is a liar, that much is clear. But the personal falsehoods Santos peddled on his way to winning handily in New York’s ird Congressional District — from his false Jewish ancestry to non-existent diplomas from colleges like Baruch and NYU and posts at Goldman Sachs — pale in comparison to the nancial lies and schemes he’s now alleged of carrying out by federal investigators.

It all came crashing down on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, as Santos was indicted on 13 charges that include money laundering (three), wire fraud (seven), the of public funds (one), and making false statements to the House of Representatives (two). at day, Santos also surrendered to federal authorities at a Long Island courthouse. He was arraigned before a magistrate judge, relinquished his passports and ordered released on a $500,000 bond.

Should he be charged with all the nancial crimes he faces, Santos could face more than 20 years in prison.

“ is indictment seeks to hold Santos accountable for various alleged fraudulent schemes and brazen misrepresentations,” said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace for the Eastern District of New York. “Taken together, the allegations in the indictment charge Santos with relying on repeated dishonesty and deception to ascend to the halls of Congress and enrich himself.”

As Santos exited the courthouse, he struck a chord identical to former President Donald Trump when commenting on his own slate of investigations and alleged crimes.

“I will prove myself innocent,” said the freshman member of Congress before calling the charges a “witch hunt.”

e indictment unveiled last Wednesday stems from an investigation that was launched ve months ago into the quagmire that was Santos and his campaign.

La acusación se deriva de una investigación que se inició hace cinco meses sobre el lodazal que eran Santos y su campaña.

e Trump-era immigration measure put in place as a public health measure amid the COVID-19 pandemic quickly revealed itself as a ploy by the previous administration to quickly expel migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border.

It was in line with Trump’s very vocal anti-immigrant stance full of racism, xenophobia and violent rhetoric — and something President Joe Biden promised to do away with upon entering the White House in 2021.

SAME OLD, SAME OLD

Instead of very public displays of anti-immigrant vitriol, the Biden administration hasn’t progressed with any of its promised

immigration reforms and once fought in court to defend upholding Title 42 as a public health measure — same as his predecessor.

Since taking o ce in 2021, Biden has faced constant pushback from Republicans decrying a “border crisis” that slowly built until last ursday. At that point, the narratives spun were all about the crush of migrants that would come across the U.S.-Mexico border in record numbers.

En lugar de muestras muy públicas de vitriolo antiinmigrante, el gobierno de Biden no

ha avanzado en ninguna de sus prometidas reformas migratorias y una vez luchó en los tribunales para defender el Título 42 como medida de salud pública, lo mismo que su predecesor.

Desde que asumió el cargo en el 2021, Biden se ha enfrentado a la constante oposición de los republicanos, que denuncian una “crisis fronteriza” que se fue gestando lentamente hasta el jueves pasado. En ese momento, todo giraba en torno a la avalancha de migrantes que cruzarían la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México en cifras récord.

Hay algo de verdad en las altas cifras: 28.000 migrantes fueron reportados en custodia de Estados Unidos en la mañana del pasado 10 de mayo. Eso está muy por encima de la capacidad o cial. Al otro lado de la frontera, en México, los primeros informes hablaban de 150.000 migrantes esperando para entrar en Estados Unidos.

“I feel like we’re already making progress,” Ortiz said of processing cases for the 28,000 migrants in custody. He reported already reducing the number of migrants in custody down a couple thousand.

In Mexico, rather than the 150,000 reported by some outlets, Ortiz said he was “tracking between 60,000 and 65,000.” It’s still a lot, and enough to cause a serious strain on the U.S.’s immigration system, but the outlook painted was much less of a crisis narrative.

Rather than Title 42, which allowed the immediate expulsion of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border on public health grounds, migrants now face a longer process, but with potentially harsher consequences.

WHAT’S TITLE 8?

It’s called Title 8, and individuals crossing into the U.S. can no longer be immediately turned away. Instead, they’ll be screened for asylum claims and those with a potentially valid case will be allowed to remain in the country until they go in front of an immigration judge to determine their future in or out of the country. ose without a valid claim will be transported to a detention facility and then be deported.

e harshness (beyond detention) is the punishment that awaits those that are deported. Migrants enter the U.S. illegally face the consequence of a ve-year ban from the country and will be prosecuted if they’re caught illegally crossing again.

Sigue siendo mucho y su ciente para causar una grave tensión en el sistema de inmigración de Estados Unidos, pero el panorama pintado era mucho menor de una narrativa de crisis.

En lugar del Título 42, que permitía la expulsión inmediata de los inmigrantes que cruzaban la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México por motivos de salud pública, los inmigrantes se enfrentan ahora a un proceso más largo, pero con consecuencias potencialmente más duras.

¿QUÉ ES EL TÍTULO 8?

Se llama Título 8 y las personas que crucen a Estados Unidos ya no podrán ser rechazadas inmediatamente. En su lugar, serán examinadas para determinar si tienen derecho a solicitar asilo. A quienes tengan un caso potencialmente válido se les permitirá permanecer en el país hasta que se presenten ante un juez de inmigración para determinar su futuro dentro o fuera del país. Los que no tengan una solicitud válida serán trasladados a un centro de detención y luego deportados.

La dureza, más allá de la detención, es el castigo que espera a los que sean deportados. Los inmigrantes que entren ilegalmente a Estados Unidos se enfrentarán a cinco años de prohibición de entrada en el país y serán procesados si se les vuelve a pillar cruzando ilegalmente.

A LIFETIME OF ADVOCACY

THROUGHOUT HER DECADES-LONG CAREER, SARA MANZANO-DIAZ HAS MADE IT CLEAR HOW MUCH SHE IS DRIVEN TO SERVE OTHERS. A LO LARGO DE DÉCADAS DE CARRERA, SARA MANZANODÍAZ HA DEJADO EN CLARO SU VOCACIÓN DE SERVICIO A LOS DEMÁS. UNA TRAYECTORIA EJEMPLAR.

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL

Sara Manzano-Diaz grew up in Harlem, New York, to two “incredibly brilliant parents” from Puerto Rico.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, however, neither of her parents had the opportunity to get an education or learn to read or write.

When her parents rst moved to the U.S., Manzano-Diaz and her oldest siblings lived in a single-room occupancy with other families.

“Because my parents couldn’t read or write, there was a priest who helped them ll out an application and we were selected to move into a grant housing project,” said Manzano-Diaz during an interview.

She admits that her upbringing was quite challenging.

“My father le Puerto Rico because there were really no jobs and he came [to the States] to support his family and he worked but he just didn’t earn enough money to support all of us,” said Manzano-Diaz.

Subsequently, the family o en relied on welfare and other government aid as their safety net.

Despite the di culties; however, they always remained positive.

“Even though we were poor nancially, we weren’t poor in spirit,” said Manzano-Diaz.

AN EARLY ADVOCATE

Manzano-Diaz credits her parents for always li ing her and her siblings up despite the many challenges.

“I learned early on that institutions like welfare, housing, schools, and hospitals, had an incredible impact on the quality of my family’s life,” she said.

At a young age, Manzano-Diaz o en served as her parents’ translator, which had a profound impact on her.

Being a translator helped develop her as an advocate and was the catalyst for helping her discover the career path she wanted to pursue.

A er earning her bachelor’s degree in communications and public relations from Boston University, Manzano-Diaz decided to go to law school.

However, the notion didn’t always receive positive feedback from others.

“I remember telling people I want to be a lawyer and they’d all laugh because back in those days, there were very few women lawyers and certainly Latina lawyers,” said Manzano-Diaz.

However, her parents believed in her and due to the fact that they weren’t able to get an education, they always instilled the notion that education is something no one can take away from you.

“When I look back on it now, I think that my siblings and I were really my parents’ life work, and I think that through me, they achieved their greatest successes,” said Manzano-Diaz.

TACKLING LAWSCHOOL AND LAUNCHING A CAREER

Manzano-Diaz pursued her law degree at Rutgers University Law School.

Going through law school was tough for her, “and the reason why I saw that is because representation really matters,” she said.

Given the lack of representation in the legal profession for women and Latinas, she was able to navigate the challenges of law school on the back of her strong belief in herself.

“As a poor kid from public housing, nobody expected anything of me,” she said. at notion is what drove her toward advocating for others whose background mirrored hers.

“What I did was, I dedicated my career to public service and advocating on behalf of minorities, women and girls, and the most vulnerable,” said Manzano-Diaz.

Her rst job out of law school was at the New York State Judiciary as one of the rst Latina lawyers working in the courthouse.

A er a while, she was recruited to work at the New York State Attorney General’s O ce. While the o er was to work downtown, she asked to instead work at the Harlem regional o ce.

“Because that’s where I was from and I wanted to give back to my community,” said Manzano-Diaz.

From her o ce window, Manzano-Diaz was able to see the very project that she grew up in. It was a daily reminder of just how far she

Alo largo de décadas de carrera, Sara Manzano-Díaz ha dejado claro su vocación de servicio a los demás. Sara Manzano-Díaz creció en Harlem, Nueva York, con dos “padres increíblemente brillantes” de Puerto Rico.

Sin embargo, debido a circunstancias desafortunadas, ninguno de sus progenitores tuvo la oportunidad de recibir una educación ni de aprender a leer o escribir.

Cuando sus padres se trasladaron por primera vez a Estados Unidos, Manzano-Díaz y sus hermanos mayores vivían en una habitación individual con otras familias: “Como mis padres no sabían leer ni escribir, hubo un sacerdote que les ayudó a diligenciar una solicitud y nos seleccionaron para trasladarnos a un proyecto de viviendas subvencionadas”, dijo Manzano-Díaz durante una entrevista.

Admite que su educación fue bastante difícil: “Mi padre se fue de Puerto Rico porque no había trabajo y vino [a Estados Unidos] para mantener a su familia. Sin embargo, no ganaba su ciente dinero”, dijo Manzano-Díaz. Por ello, la familia dependía de la asistencia social y otras ayudas públicas.

Sin embargo, a pesar de las di cultades, siempre mantuvieron una actitud positiva: “Aunque éramos económicamente pobres, éramos ricos de espíritu”, a rma Manzano-Díaz.

UNA DEFENSORA INNATA

A pesar de las di cultades, Manzano-Díaz atribuye a sus padres el mérito de haberla sacado adelante, a ella y a sus hermanos: “Aprendí muy pronto que instituciones como la asistencia social, la vivienda, las escuelas y los hospitales tenían un impacto increíble en la calidad de vida de mi familia”, a rma.

Desde muy joven, sirvió de traductora de sus padres, hecho que tuvo un profundo impacto en ella. Fue el catalizador que la ayudó a descubrir la carrera que quería seguir como defensora.

Tras licenciarse en Comunicación y Relaciones Públicas por la Universidad de Boston, Manzano-Díaz decidió estudiar Derecho. Sin embargo, la idea no siempre recibió la respuesta positiva de los demás: “Recuerdo que le decía a la gente que quería ser abogada, y todos se reían porque en aquella época había

muy pocas mujeres abogadas y, desde luego, abogadas latinas”, cuenta.

Sin embargo, sus padres creyeron en ella y, debido a que no pudieron acceder a una educación, siempre le inculcaron su importancia: “Cuando miro atrás, pienso que mis hermanos y yo fuimos el verdadero trabajo de mis padres, y creo que a través de mí lograron sus mayores éxitos”, dijo Manzano-Díaz.

ESTUDIAR DERECHO Y EMPRENDER UNA

CARRERA PROFESIONAL

Manzano-Díaz se licenció en Derecho en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Rutgers.

Aunque fue duro, dada la falta de representación de las mujeres y las latinas en la profesión jurídica, fue capaz de superar los retos gracias a su gran con anza en sí misma.

“Como niña pobre de una vivienda pública, nadie esperaba nada de mí”, a rma. Esa noción fue la que la impulsó a abogar por otras personas cuyos antecedentes se asemejaban a los suyos: “Dediqué mi carrera al servicio público y a la defensa de las minorías, las mujeres, las niñas y los más vulnerables”, explica Manzano-Díaz.

Su primer trabajo al salir de la facultad de Derecho fue en el Poder Judicial del Estado de Nueva York, como una de las primeras abogadas latinas que trabajaban en los tribunales. Al cabo de un tiempo, la contrataron para trabajar en la Fiscalía General del Estado de Nueva York. Aunque le ofrecieron ubicarse en el centro de la ciudad, pidió trabajar en la ocina regional de Harlem “Porque era de allí y quería devolver algo a mi comunidad”, dijo Manzano-Díaz.

Desde la ventana de su o cina, Manzano-Díaz podía ver el mismo proyecto en el que creció. Era un recordatorio diario de lo lejos que había llegado. Allí llevó a cabo investigaciones y procesó denuncias de fraude al consumidor.

“La posibilidad de utilizar mis conocimientos jurídicos para proteger a mi comunidad del fraude al consumidor fue increíble”, re exiona.

“ e ability to use my legal skills to protect my community from consumer fraud was awesome,” she re ected.

Manzano-Diaz has had the opportunity to work for two U.S. Presidents; the rst being President Bill Clinton.

Under the Clinton Administration, she served as deputy general counsel at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the New York and New Jersey region.

In the role, she worked to enforce fair housing, civil rights, and anti-discriminational laws. expand housing opportunities for families like her own all across the country.

Among her biggest accomplishments was implementing a compliance agreement against the largest public housing authority in the country, resulting in the creation of 9,000 disabled housing units in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

roughout her career, Manzano-Diaz has remained consistent in her goals.

“What I have tried to do has been to nd a way to make a positive impact and nd a way to open up doors for people,” she highlighted.

A TRUE WOMAN OF MERIT

Other roles throughout Manzano-Diaz’s illustrious career include managing director of the Camden Department of Treasury, Deputy Secretary of State for Pennsylvania, Director of the Women’s Bureau — appointed by President Barack Obama — and many others.

In the latter role, Manzano-Diaz advocated for working women nationwide helping them achieve economic security.

More recently in 2021, she was named the Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, which regulates the integrity of the legalized gaming industry.

In many of her roles, Manzano-Diaz has been the rst or among the rst Latinas to be appointed. She has also been among the highest-ranking Latinas in state government.

Holding those distinctions has never been something she has taken lightly. On the contrary, it’s something she takes pride in and works to ensure more women and Latinas can have the opportunity to ll similar roles.

“We all have di erent journeys, we all have di erent challenges, and we have di erent voices,” Manzano-Diaz. “All of that around the table make whatever your enterprise is a better place because you’re bringing in new and fresh ideas.”

As someone who has had to navigate rooms where she was the only woman — and

o en the only women of color — Manzano-Diaz has had to be doubly committed to opening doors for more women of color.

“And keeping the doors open,” she underscored.

“Once the door is open, we have to keep them open not only for the next generation, but to keep providing those great ideas, to keep providing great voices that help contribute to the bottom line,” Manzano-Diaz added.

As a strong woman who comes from a family of strong women, Manzano-Diaz has sought to serve as an example for other women.

REFLECTIONSON A CAREER OF PUBLIC SERVICE

On May 19, Manzano-Diaz will be the recipient of the 2023 AL DÍA Women of Merit Lifetime Achievement Award.

It’s a recognition that she is both humbled and honored to receive.

“It means a lot to me because you’re being recognized by your own community,” she noted. However, it goes far beyond that.

“I spent my life in public service and in di erent capacities try to advocate on behalf of those who didn’t have a voice,” Manzano-Diaz.

At each stop, she tried to help more and more individuals — starting with her family and community, and expanding it to the region and country, and then globally.

As she re ects on the work she has done and the impact she’s been able to make, Manzano-Diaz had some key pieces of advice for other women and Latinas who are nding their own paths.

It starts with love.

“When you look in the mirror, you have to love that person that you see,” she said, which leads to her next piece of advice. at is, having a strong belief in yourself.

When Manzano-Diaz rst told people she wanted to become a lawyer and people laughed at the idea, what allowed her to keep pushing was her belief that she had it in her to do it despite doubts or fears.

In addition, it’s always important to stay grounded and proud of who you are and where you came from.

“What that provides you is a solid foundation because it empowers you to know that you belong and that your voice matters,” she noted.

To Manzano-Diaz, you are either at the table or you aren’t. For those who are at the table, advocating for others is critically important.

“Diversity is important because it allows us to see ourselves, but also allows our children to dream and not have to do it the hard way like I did,” she concluded.z

Manzano-Díaz ha tenido la oportunidad de trabajar para dos presidentes de Estados Unidos: el primero de ellos, Bill Clinton.

Durante la administración Clinton, fue asesora general adjunta del Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano de los Estados Unidos para la región de Nueva York y Nueva Jersey. REFLEXIONES SOBRE UNA CARRERA DE SERVICIO PÚBLICO

El 19 de mayo, Manzano-Díaz recibirá el Premio AL DÍA 2023 a la Trayectoria de una Mujer de Mérito.

Como ella lo expresa, es un reconocimiento que recibe con humildad y honor: “Signi ca mucho para mí porque es un reconocimiento de la propia comunidad”. Sin embargo, va mucho más allá.

“Me he pasado la vida en el servicio público y, en diferentes puestos, he intentado defender los intereses de quienes no tenían voz”, dice Manzano-Díaz. En cada parada, intentaba ayudar a más y más personas, empezando por su familia y su comunidad, para luego llegar a la región, al país y a todo el mundo.

Mientras re exiona sobre el trabajo que ha realizado y el impacto que ha podido tener, Manzano-Díaz tiene algunos consejos clave para otras mujeres y latinas que están encontrando sus propios caminos.

Erika Guadalupe-Núñez, who is originally from Mexico, migrated to the United States with her mother at a young age.

“My mom, like many other immigrants, was seeking to build a better life in the U.S. because it was no longer possible in Mexico,” said Guadalupe-Núñez in an interview with AL DÍA.

Starting anew in a di erent country. Guadalupe-Núñez grew up undocumented. At 17, she started to become politicized about what it means to be undocumented living in the U.S.

ere’s a saying in the immigrant movement that states, “Sin papales, sin miedo.”

Becoming more aware of the rhetoric surrounding immigrants inspired Guadalupe-Núñez toward her path to becoming a community organizer.

e DREAM Act was one of the main catalysts that drove her toward that path.

“Seeing that fail multiple times as a young person and knowing then that was the only option presented to me at the time, it made me question, ‘what does it mean, for me?’” she asked.

When Guadalupe-Núñez arrived to Philadelphia for school, she started doing deportation defense work and eventually obtained a special visa and later a green card.

LIFELONG ENDEAVORS

“I’ve always been someone that was really moved by social causes and social injustice,” said Guadalupe-Núñez.

She can recall back in the second grade when she learned that cheetahs were going extinct. Upon learning that they were dying out, she organized her classmates to write a petition.

“It was sort of like the way I grew up,” she said. “I started organizing at a young age and it really did come from my personal experience as someone who was undocumented and having people call me slurs when I was younger.”

e challenges didn’t stop there, and as she got more involved in the movement and meet-

ing others, and started hearing about their stories, as well.

Over the years, Guadalupe Núñez has seen the rhetoric surrounding immigrant communities, and the harm it o en causes.

In addition to being a community organizer, Guadalupe-Núñez is also an artist. rough her art, she has been able to honor her heritage, while also using it to highlight the challenges within the immigrant rights movement.

“I think art helps build power,” Guadalupe-Núñez said.

“For me, part of the reason that we ght is to preserve and move our culture, our language and traditions forward. at’s why it’s so important to make sure it has a role in all of our social change e orts,” she added.

With the o en harmful narratives surrounding the immigrant community, Guadalupe-Núñez believes art — particularly with messaging that comes directly from members of the immigrant community — can be a strong way to combat it.

EXECUTIVE

DIRECTOR AT JUNTOS

In March 2020, Guadalupe Núñez was appointed the executive director of Juntos.

Desde temprana edad, Erika Guadalupe-Núñez, originaria de México, emigró a Estados Unidos con su madre.

“Mi madre, como muchos otros inmigrantes, buscaba una vida mejor en Estados Unidos porque en México ya no era posible”, explicó Guadalupe-Núñez en una entrevista con AL DÍA.

Empezar de nuevo en otro país le implicó crecer indocumentada, así que a los 17 años ya cargaba un discurso político sobre lo que signi ca ser indocumentada en Estados Unidos.

Hay un dicho en el movimiento inmigrante que reza: “Sin papales, sin miedo”.

Ser más consciente de la retórica que rodea a los inmigrantes inspiró a Guadalupe-Núñez en su camino para convertirse en organizadora comunitaria. El DREAM Act fue uno de los principales catalizadores que la impulsaron hacia ese camino.

“Verla fracasar varias veces cuando era joven y saber que era la única opción que se me presentaba en ese momento me hizo preguntarme: “¿Qué signi ca para mí?”

She rst became introduced to Juntos while working with the Migrant Power Movement, an organization in which she worked for 8 years prior.

Upon learning about an uptick in community arrests in Montgomery Country, the Migrant Power Movement traveled to Montgomery County to organize and support the individuals being a ected.

Members of Juntos were also there to show support for the movement.

“From there, I was like, ‘I would love to get to know this organization that came and supported us,’” she said.

Guadalupe Núñez started attending their events and meetings, volunteering and later become a board member.

Her biggest role prior to becoming the new executive director was helping create art for their events.

Guadalupe Núñez joined Juntos during a period of inactivity for the organization; her rst day as executive director was the same day the stay-at-home order was instituted in Philadelphia.

“ ere was a lot of instability around the organization and I had to really rmly take hold and respond to the moment,” she said. She did just that as she strived to help communities navigate the pandemic and the continuous challenges facing immigrants everyday.

As the executive director of Juntos, Guadalupe Núñez nds most ful llment from seeing the community build power and become leaders in their own way.

AN EMERGING LEADER

On Friday, May 19, Guadalupe Núñez will receive the 2023 AL DÍA Women of Merit Emerging Leader Award.

She notes being very touched by the recognition.

However, as someone who works within the trenches of the immigration situation, she understands how important it is to find that balance between the public and private matters of the individuals she works with.

“I think a big part of it is just serving the community and that is a sign of merit for me,” said Guadalupe Núñez. “Folks who get up everyday in service for their community members more than anything else.”

As an Emerging Leader Award recipient, Guadalupe Núñez acknowledges that there are various types of leaders, from the most visible and vocal to those who work in the background.

However, the most important component is making sure that things are getting done and impact is felt.

“I consider myself the kind of person that’s willing to do the spadework of organizing… the nitty gritty, non-glamorous tasks that are important to build the relationships.”

“I think that’s what a lot of good leaders need to do,” she added. “They extend themselves so that other people can reach their full potential.”

That’s the approach Guadalupe Núñez takes in her work each and every day. z

ROSALIND PICHARDO

She survived an attempted homicide, and shortly a erward her boyfriend Talvird Jackson was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. She later lost her twin sister to suicide and her brother, Alex, to murder. Her story was the subject of a short documentary titled, “Hello Sunshine.” In response to those tragedies, Pichardo founded Operation Save Our City, a volunteer-led organization that supports homicide victims’ families in their time of greatest need. rough the nonpro t, she aims to o er comfort and facilitate communication with the police department to draw attention to unsolved crime and homicide cases.

Pichardo also works in harm reduction for Prevention Point, the Kensington-based social services organization. z

CULTUR POETRY FOR THE NEXT GENERATION Latina

Norma Corrales-Martin has been a professor of instruction in Spanish and Portuguese at Temple University for 18 years. Parallely, she has also been a poet for quite a longer period of time: since she wrote her rst poem at the age of eight, in Colombia. She remembers thinking of it as a great way of expressing herself.

Fast forward a couple of years, she is also a published author. She recently had her “baby project”, ¡Qué viva la música!, published by Temple University Press. e book is a research on how to teach Spanish grammar in a way students can best understand: through music.

A woman that can’t be labeled with only one occupation, Corrales-Martin is also one of the people responsible for bringing the International Poetry Festival to Philadelphia, almost 10 years ago. In April, the city welcomed the ninth edition of the celebration, lled with good poetry, food and stories.

In 2014, the poet Roger Santiváñez and Corrales-Martin were invited to participate in the rst edition of the festival in Philadelphia. It began as a small event that has only grown throughout the years.

Initially being held in English, the festival in the City of Brotherly Love slowly became more Hispanic. e audience became mostly Latina; even though most of the people understood both languages. Corrales-Martin thinks it’s bene cial not only for the Hispanic community in Philadelphia to experience events like this, but also the entire city.

“I think it is important to show this side of our culture to the city of Philadelphia, and that people see that we [Latinos] have this tradition of poetry,” she added.

Previously to adding a more institutional environment to the festival — by joining forces with Accion Colombia and Free Library of Philadelphia — Corrales-Martin opened the doors of her own house in South Philadelphia twice for the festival.

“I love it because it’s an intimate environment,” she said. “What I love the most was that my house was full of poetry a er. I felt like dancing in my house.”

Because of the pandemic, the festival was virtual for two editions. In 2022, back in person, Corrales-Martin couldn’t stop noticing the amount of new attendees the event had. She wasn’t expecting that amount of people being interested in poetry in Philadelphia.

“It has been really nice to see all these people enthusiastic about poetry and all these young people thinking about writing poetry,” she added.

For the past two years, the festival has been held at the restaurant Alma del Mar; which Corrales-Martin loves as people can enjoy good food and good poetry with families, friends and members of the community.

INSPIRATION FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS

Corrales-Martin enjoys organizing the festival in Philadelphia because she thinks it’s something of value, which can promote culture awareness among the younger people in the

A Corrales-Martín no se le puede etiquetar con una sola ocupación, pues es también una de las responsables de traer el Festival Internacional de Poesía a Filadel a, hace casi 10 años. En abril, la ciudad acogió la novena edición, repleta de buena poesía, comida e historias.

En el 2014, el poeta Roger Santiváñez y Corrales-Martín fueron invitados a participar en la primera edición del festival en Filadel a. Comenzó como un pequeño evento que no ha hecho más que crecer a lo largo de los años.

Inicialmente se celebraba en inglés, pero poco a poco el festival de la ‘Ciudad del Amor Fraternal’ se fue hispanizando. El público pasó a ser cada vez más latino, aunque la mayoría entendía los dos idiomas.

Según Corrales-Martin, es la ciudad entera la que se bene cia de vivir acontecimientos como este. “Creo que es importante mostrar este lado de nuestra cultura a la ciudad de Filadel a y que la gente vea que nosotros [los latinos] tenemos esta tradición de poesía”, añadió.

Antes de agregar un entorno más institucional al festival —uniendo fuerzas con Acción Colombia y la Biblioteca Libre de Filadel a—, Corrales-Martín abrió las puertas de su propia casa en el sur de Filadel a dos veces para el festival: “Me encanta porque es un entorno íntimo. Lo bonito fue ver cómo mi casa se llenó de poesía. Tenía ganas de bailar en mi casa”.

A causa de la pandemia, el festival fue virtual durante dos ediciones. En el 2022, de nuevo presencial, Corrales-Martín no pudo dejar de notar la cantidad de nuevos asistentes que tuvo el evento. No esperaba que esa cifra de gente se interesara por la poesía en Filadel a. “Ha sido muy agradable ver a toda esta gente entusiasmada con la poesía y a todos estos jóvenes pensando en escribir poesía”, indicó.

Durante los dos últimos años, el festival se ha celebrado en el restaurante Alma del Mar, que a Corrales-Martin le encanta, ya que la gente puede disfrutar de buena comida y poesía con su familia, amigos y miembros de la comunidad.

INSPIRACIÓN PARA GENERACIONES JÓVENES

Corrales-Martin disfruta organizando el Festival porque cree que es algo valioso, que puede fomentar la conciencia cultural entre los más jóvenes de la comunidad. Explicó que

She explained that the organizers invite recurring poets annually; but in a “word of mouth” kind of invitation as they try to nd new ones every year. e artists don’t need to be necessarily published, but have to be committed to poetry. ey’ve had poetry readers from all Latin America countries over the years.

Excited to see the growing interest of Philadelphians for poetry, Corrales-Martin wants to help especially the next generation of poetry writers who might not know how to begin. For three editions now, the festival has been doing workshops — as a part of its one month long celebration of the art — where young people can learn how to nd themselves in the poetry world.

“I want people to see that poetry is not something far away from them,” Corrales-Martin said. “It’s something that people can do everyday”

Usually at the end of the reading, there is an open mic for new and inspired poets to share their work. It’s a way for people to get excited about poetry, so they can start feeling con dent.

In future editions, Corrales-Martin hopes to see the city of Philadelphia helping promote these types of Hispanic cultural events. She believes it’s important for the younger Latino generations to see them being done in Spanish. e festival, for example, shows them that there is a writing and reading poetry tradition in Latin America that they can explore because it’s in their culture.

“I think that we, Latino people, are really poetic and romantic in a way,” she said while laughing. z

Emocionada al ver el creciente interés de los habitantes de Filadel a por la poesía, Corrales-Martín quiere ayudar a la próxima generación de escritores, que quizá no sepan cómo empezar. Desde hace tres ediciones, el festival organiza talleres, como parte de la celebración de un mes de duración de este arte, en los que los jóvenes pueden aprender a encontrarse a sí mismos en el mundo de la poesía.

“Quiero que la gente vea que la poesía no es algo lejano a ella. Es algo que la gente puede hacer todos los días”, dijo.

Normalmente, al nal de la lectura hay un espacio abierto para que poetas nuevos e inspirados compartan su trabajo. Es una forma de

que la gente se entusiasme con la poesía, para que empiece a sentirse segura de sí misma.

En futuras ediciones, Corrales-Martin espera que la ciudad de Filadel a ayude a promover este tipo de actos culturales hispanos. Cree que es importante que las generaciones latinas más jóvenes vean que se hacen en español. El festival, por ejemplo, les muestra que hay una tradición de escritura y lectura de poesía en Latinoamérica que pueden explorar porque está en su cultura.

“Creo que nosotros los latinos somos realmente poéticos y románticos en cierto modo”, dijo riendo. z

Education has faced many challenges in recent years; political polarization in academia has become a common trend, with Florida headlines pouring in almost daily— with “woke” education agendas at the forefront of most of the information available to the public propagating “ideological rhetoric.”

In an interview with AL DÍA, Maria Vazquez, Superintendent of Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) in Florida, shares the book-banning process, its impact, and the anxiety of educators with ensuring compliance.

SOCIAL STUDIES MATERIAL CONTROVERSY

e Florida Department of Education made a bold move last week by rejecting 35% of social studies textbooks submitted by publishers; in the initial review, only 19 out of 101 were approved “due to inaccurate material, error and other information that was not aligned with Florida Law,” and has also worked directly with publishers “who have updated their materials to comply with Florida’s rigorous standards.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis has made e orts to restrict the materials taught in schools— HB 1467, a law that led to the removal of classroom books in public school districts to ensure they are free of certain race-based teachings and pornography—set in motion book banning of critical race theory, ethnic studies, and most recently the censorship of the contents present in social studies materials.

A report by New York Times said one publisher omitted race in telling Rosa Parks’ story in a social studies book for Florida’s rst graders.

Based on the Florida Department of Education, the examples of rejected material referencing social justice, taking a knee, and other contents of ‘concern’ do not align with Florida Law.

Another reason for the rejection of some of the material referenced was “politically charged language when referencing the Hebrew Bible,” “unsolicited topics,” or “not age appropriate.”

“To uphold our exceptional standards, we must ensure our students and teachers have the highest quality materials available – materials that focus on historical facts and are free from inaccuracies or ideological rhetoric,” said Commissioner of Educations Manny Diaz, Jr. in a press release.

OCPS BOOK BAN

OCPS — the eighth largest school district in the country — has banned four books at the district level, with a h prohibited at the school level, which means the school’s Instructional Review Committee makes the decision to remove the book from its library. e books banned are Gender Queer, is Book is Gay, Let’s Talk About It, It’s Perfectly

La educación se ha enfrentado a muchos retos en los últimos años. La polarización política en el mundo académico se ha convertido en una tendencia, con titulares de Florida llegando casi a diario, con agendas educativas WOKE a la cabeza de la mayor parte de la información disponible para el público propagando la “retórica ideológica”.

LA PROHIBICIÓN DE LIBROS EN OCPS

OCPS, el octavo distrito escolar más grande del país, ha prohibido cuatro libros más un quinto prohibido en las escuelas, lo que signi ca que el Comité de Revisión de Instrucción de la escuela debe eliminar el libro de su biblioteca. “We want our parents engaged in their child’s education,” said Vazquez. “I think where people are concerned, and I am too, is when decisions are made that impact all children... that may not be everyone’s belief. And that is where we go with our mantra of ‘teaching the standard.’”

According to a report released by PEN America last year, of books banned between July 2021 and June 2022, 41% explicitly address LGBTQ+ themes, protagonists, or prominent secondary characters, 40% contain protagonists or secondary characters of color, 21% directly address race and racism, and 22% had sexual content.

“We believe that based on the law, they are not supposed to be on our shelves,” said Vazquez, who admits “there is a lot of anxiety with our teachers around what can be in their library, classroom libraries, media centers, and it would be helpful if the state had a list.”

She notes if the districts provided a comprehensive list of books reviewed and found that “they do not belong,” there “might be more consistency, and there might be less fear and anxiety around what instructional materials to use.”

“OUT A CHILD”

Amendment to the “Parental Rights in Education” bill or as infamously known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill requires schools to notify a “student’s parent if there is a change in the student services or monitoring related to the student mental, emotional, or physical health or well-being.” e school must inform the child’s parent within six weeks of learning the student’s sexual orientation.

e Trevor Projects’ 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health surveyed nearly 34,000 LGBTQ youth ages 13 to 24 across the United States, with 45% of respondents being people of color and 48% being transgender or non-binary. e survey reveals 45% of LGBTQ youth considered committing suicide in 2021, and nearly 1 in 5 transgender and non-binary youth attempted suicide—with LGBTQ youth of color reporting higher rates than their white peers.

Vazquez is concerned that for families that were not supportive of their child’s sexual orientation, “schools were the place where they could have those conversations.” z

Brazilian-American artist Indigo De Souza has carved a unique lane for herself in the music industry. Her 2018 debut project I Love My Mom and 2021 sophomore effort Any Shape You Take were met with critical acclaim thanks to the singer-songwriter’s emotionally-charged music that fuses qualities of Grunge, Indie, and Pop.

This April, De Souza released her third studio album All of This Will End The 11-track LP contains deeply personal songs that re ect her maturation as an artist and person. De Souza launched a tour coinciding with her album release, and is scheduled to perform at Union Transfer May 23.

Growing up in a conservative small town with a population of only 2,000 people, De Souza felt like an outcast the majority of her childhood. She was the only biracial kid at her school, and raised by a supportive mother who embraced and celebrated the qualities that made them different from everyone else. At the age of 16, the aspiring singer moved to Asheville, North Carolina where she found a new community of like-minded people that would help her fully pursue a music career.

Surrounding herself with a supportive community is crucial to De Souza. In an interview with THEM, she notes a signicant change in who she considered a part of that community in her personal and musical life while recording All of This Will End.

“My life took a dramatic shift, mostly from spaces of dysfunction into really strong community, and stability, and celebration of self and others, which I feel like I had not been connected to as much before.” This

album re ects her new headspace. “I was not only feeling better in my life, and felt like I really had community around me, but I also felt a lot more con dent in my own ideas and

The emotionally-charged “You Can Be Mean” nds the singer re-examining her relationship with an abusive ex. While the intense distortion- lled track “Always” focuses on De Souza’s tumultuous relationship with her father, who wasn’t adequately present throughout her youth.

The project itself can be looked at as a thorough inspection of De Souza’s relationships and how they’ve impacted her, with a central theme of growing thanks to those experiences. Her masterful songwriting is not only relatable, but also empowering for listeners working to overcome past traumas.

In a recent discussion with Rolling Stone , De Souza explained that the seemingly grim album title All Of This Will End has become her personal mantra.

“It feels like I’m able to infuse every day of my life with intention and love and

presence within my relationships. Because why not? Everything is going to end. I just want to do the best that I can do now.”

recent WSFS Bank survey found that a majority of Americans are con dent in their ability to manage their money. This includes 91% of respondents in the Greater Philadelphia and Delaware region.

However, concerns are prevalent, as 34% of the region were not condent they could weather the storm of an economic downturn or recession.

The study surveyed 1,001 residents of the Greater Philadelphia and Delaware region and 1,000 national respondents.

With 34% of regional respondents and 39% nationally stating they were not con dent they could afford rising costs of living, many are making changes to their spending habits as a result.

About 61% of total regional respondents said they are cutting back on non-essential spending, compared to 69% nationally, while 42% of regional respondents said they are delaying a large purchase like a home, car or furniture.

Two key factors play a role in that concern — rising costs and in ated interest rates.

“High interest rates are making borrowing more expensive,” said Shari Kruzinski, Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Banking Of cer at WSFS Bank.

However, one silver lining Kruzinski nds in this is the opportunity to earn more on your savings through tools like High Yield Money Markets and Certicates of Deposit (CDs).

Regionally, 44% felt they did not receive enough nancial education and guidance about managing their nances; a gure that rises to 52% nationally.

Black regional respondents were more likely to agree with that sentiment (55%), compared to 45% of White and 30% of Latino/Hispanic respondents, respectively.

“Financial education plays a key role in building the con dence needed to achieve many major goals in life,” said Vernita Dorsey, Senior Vice President, Director of Community Strategy at WSFS Bank. “We understand the importance of working with the broader community to provide key lessons to students and adults of all age ranges. The variety of puzzles available today is just astounding--from table- lling jigsaws and paper and ink puzzle books to apps on your phone, there’s a puzzle out there to absorb any mind and give it the space to relax.

When trying to get to sleep, count backward from 500. Yes, it’s a large number, but that’s by design. You won’t be worried about reaching zero and having to start over. And it will take just enough focus to stay on track that you won’t slip into reciting a memorized set of numbers.

• Mental Body Scan

Start at one end of your body and mentally “check-in” with each body part on your way to the other end. For example, start at your toes and notice how they’re feeling. Move to your ankles, then calves, your knees, etc. For each spot, focus there just long enough to notice, then move on. When you’ve completed the whole body scan, see if it helped you relax. For another variation, tense and then relax the muscles in those body parts as you scan them. By the time you reach the end, you’ll probably feel much calmer than when you began.

To PGW Customers: Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) filed a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to change your gas base rates as of November 28, 2023. The base rates are part of the Distribution Charge on your bill. Hearings on PGW’s Proposed Rate Change Scheduled

The PUC is the state agency that approves rates for public utilities. The PUC will investigate and hold hearings on the Company’s request. PGW must prove that its request is reasonable. After examining the evidence, the PUC may grant all, some, or none of the request or may reduce existing rates.

The PUC has scheduled four public input hearings, listed below, to take public testimony on PGW’s proposed overall rate increase. At these hearings, you can present your views to the PUC Administrative Law Judges (ALJs). Testimony given “under oath” is subject to cross-examination, recorded by the court reporter, and will be reviewed by the ALJs. Unsworn testimony will be “o the record” and not subject to cross-examination. Unsworn testimony will not be transcribed by the court reporter and will not be considered by the ALJs in their Recommended Decision. You do not have to be an expert. You can make the PUC aware of problems about PGW’s service, management, or discuss any issues related to the increase or other aspects of the case. You may also testify in support of the Company or its requested rate increase. This information can be helpful when the PUC investigates the rate request.

How can we come together despite the di erences?

More than ever, this question is pertinent today because of the public awareness of this condition. Globalization has brought to the surface profound ethnic, cultural, political, economic, gender and other di erences across the world.

e contrast, in these times is the polarization that leads us to extremes and to denigrate those who do not think or act as we do. Without going to more complex areas where many forces converge, in our families or with our friends, where di erences should unite us in a respectful discussion, we see that heated messages end up making enemies or placing prohibitions, in my view absurd, such as not talking about politics, religion or football, to give just a few examples. ese spaces should be the most favorable to listen to each other, to get to know them, to re ect on differences, to argue from knowledge, so that we learn to build new paths of encounter. From there, we could manage to be more inclusive, to value diversity as something that enriches and, nally, to come together despite the di erence, for a better society. Likewise, education should serve as a lightning rod and an antidote.

To take another example, diversity and inclusion have been present in migration processes for centuries. And in the Americas they have been part of its development process for more than 500 years. We are the sum of multiple ethnic and cultural ingredients. But in many areas, such as education, this is not realized.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, we are 660 million inhabitants, of which 10 % belong to indigenous peoples, and almost 20 % are Afro-Americans. But unfortunately, both have very poor social and economic conditions, as well as little access to education, health and decent work.

In the United States, Latinos are becoming more and more numerous and play a greater role in the country’s development. Today they rep-

resent 18.9 %, according to the 2021 census. ere has been a substantial improvement in their working and educational conditions, but there is still a lack of political will for diversity and inclusion in several states and companies.

In that country, the language wall is a strong factor for exclusion, where discriminatory expressions and actions based on origins continue to exist. However, those who have managed to make the leap and become socially and economically connected have done so through education, a fundamental condition for diversity and inclusion to materialize and for us to understand how decisive they are for our development.

at is why it is so important to take ownership of their meaning: to learn from others, to confront our differences and to understand that we depend on other people to move forward.

How satisfying it is to see the diversity of a society in a classroom!

at should be the measure of whether we are moving forward or backward. We have made the leap, at least in education and in many workplaces. ere is still a long way to go, but progress towards equity is irreversible.

e responsibility of the education sector and institutions is to create the required strategies to have a vision based on diversity and inclusion, together with quality. If we achieve this, other areas of society will be impacted.

at is why it is important to understand that di erence does not subtract. On the contrary, it adds up.

Sin ir a ámbitos más complejos en donde muchas fuerzas con uyen, en nuestras familias o con nuestros amigos, en donde las diferencias deberían unirnos en una discusión respetuosa, vemos que mensajes acalorados terminan enemistándonos o poniendo prohibiciones, desde mi punto de vista absurdas, como no hablar de política, de religión o de fútbol, por poner sólo algunos ejemplos.

Estos espacios deberían ser los más propicios para aprender a escuchar al otro, a conocerlo, a reexionar sobre las diferencias, a argumentar desde el conocimiento, para que aprendamos a construir nuevos caminos de encuentro. Desde allí, podríamos lograr ser más inclusivos, a valorar la diversidad como algo que enriquece y, nalmente, a con uir en medio de las diferencias, por una mejor sociedad. Así mismo, la educación debería servir, entonces, de pararrayos y antídoto.

Por poner otro ejemplo, la diversidad y la inclusión han estado presentes en los procesos migratorios por siglos. Y en las Américas hacen parte de su proceso de desarrollo en más de 500 años. Somos la suma de múltiples ingredientes étnicos y culturales. Pero en muchos ámbitos, como la educación, no se hace realidad.

En América Latina y el Caribe, somos 660 millones de habitantes, de los cuales el 10% pertenece a pueblos indígenas y casi el 20% son afroamericanos. Pero unos y otros lamentablemente tienen muy malas condiciones sociales y económicas, además de poco acceso a educación, salud y a un trabajo digno.

En Estados Unidos, los latinos cada vez son más y tiene mayor peso en el desarrollo del país. Hoy representan el 18,9%, de acuerdo con el censo del 2021. Hay una mejora sustancial en sus condiciones laborales y educativas, pero aún falta la voluntad política hacia la diversidad y la inclusión en varios estados y empresas.

En ese país, el muro del idioma es un factor fuerte para la exclusión, donde siguen existiendo expresiones y acciones discriminatorias por los orígenes. Sin embargo, quienes han logrado dar el salto y se han vinculado social y económicamente lo han hecho a partir de la educación, condición fundamental para que la diversidad y la inclusión se materialicen y podamos entender lo determinantes que son para nuestro desarrollo. Por eso, la importancia de apropiarnos de sus signi cados: aprender del otro, confrontar nuestras diferencias y entender que dependemos de otras personas para avanzar.

¡Qué satisfactorio resulta ver en un salón de clases la diversidad de una sociedad! Ese debería ser el medidor para saber si avanzamos o estamos en retroceso. Se logró dar el salto, al menos en la educación y en muchos espacios laborales. Falta, pero está claro que es irreversible el avance hacia la equidad.

La responsabilidad desde el sector educativo y desde las instituciones es crear las estrategias necesarias para tener una visión desde la diversidad y la inclusión, sumada a la calidad. Si lo logramos, se impactarán otros espacios de la sociedad.

Por eso es importante entender que la diferencia no resta. Por el contrario, suma.
