BNU UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2024

Jack’s story COMMUTING AND GET TING IT RIGHT Hi, I’m Jack. I am a Graphic Design student here at BNU, and I am also a commuting student. I was unsure about going to university and I was nervous to move away from home. As a result of this, I decided to explore universities closer to home that would allow me to remain living at home. I live in West London which is around a 25-minute drive from our High Wycombe Campus. I am very happy with my decision. Because I live near to BNU ’s Uxbridge Campus, I am able to take the campus link bus which is funded by the University and runs on a frequent hourly basis throughout the day. My main worry with being a commuting student surrounded the potential for friendships. This concern was quickly overcome due to the welcome here at BNU. Within my very first weeks, I was confident in calling not only my new course mates friends but also many on other courses. This is thanks to the collaboration between courses we offer here at BNU, meaning that I get to mix with students from a wide range of specialisms. In addition to this, schemes and societies have ensured that I never feel isolated despite the fact I do not live in Halls of Residence. Whilst I am still close to my family and high school friends, I do feel that the relationships and friends I have made here at BNU are long lasting.

25

Course: BA (Hons) Graphic Design Location: High Wycombe Campus With regards to nightlife, being a commuting student has not affected this at all. Thanks to the BIG Deal I have been able to access all the events I have wanted with no issues so I can still enjoy myself with my peers outside of lesson times. Yes, my night out does usually end with a 25-minute bus journey or an Uber, but this does not stop me having a good time. I have gained skills like confidence, communication, independence and many others. Moreover, I have made strides in my professional career having had the opportunity to work with live briefs from clients both online and in person. So, if you are anxious about university, I promise nobody is going to force you to move across the country and the university experience will still welcome you with open arms here at BNU.

Ed’s story MOVING FAR FROM HOME I come from Bury, near Manchester, so the decision to move quite a long way from home was not an easy one. I chose BNU because my course is very unique, combining training to become a commercial pilot with an honours degree, giving me the chance to experience university with strong employability at the end. So far, I am loving my time at university and it is ticking every box for me. I was rather nervous moving to a town I knew little about. However, within just two hours of meeting my flatmates and going out on the first night I already felt right at home, it was great.

I live in Hughenden Park Student Village, which is ideal being only a 15 minute walk to uni but close to beautiful countryside too. Hughenden has a great atmosphere and you soon get to know everyone, especially during the welcome week which was brilliant. The Students’ Union organised loads of great events and nights out, from club nights to quiz nights and mixers to the Freshers Fair, which was a great place to sign up for societies and grab freebies. My course induction was excellent and I had my first flight at my flying school really quickly – that made me realise that I am in the perfect place for what I want to do and I can’t wait for the next three years here!

BNU UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2024

Make yourself at home Deciding where you are going to be living at university is a big choice. Some decide to stay at home and commute – many of our students do, so you won’t be alone. But for others, moving away from home is a big part of their university experience, and you’ll want the certainty of knowing where you are going to live. At BNU, we have a range of accommodation options to suit your budget, your lifestyle and your social life and somewhere you will feel at home. All our accommodation is walking distance to our High Wycombe Campus, shops, supermarkets and the town centre, making it easy (and cheap) to get around.

BNU UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2024

Enhance your employability THE BUCKS AWARD

LE ADERSHIP ACADEMY

Every time you participate in an activity with us, be it volunteering, a skills session or securing a committee role, we collate these records to showcase your involvement through the Bucks Award. The Bucks Award is divided into sections with the idea that by the time you leave university you have something in every section – a completely achievable goal due to all the free opportunities you have access to thanks to the BIG Deal.

As one of the leading students’ unions in the country, Bucks Students’ Union has employed many graduates on its management and wider staff team. One of our key strategic priorities for the coming years is ‘Employability and Life After University’. To deliver this, we have created the Leadership Academy to recognise the value of developing future leaders early on.

The Bucks Award will be used as an ongoing reflective tool to identify any areas you feel we can help you develop. Maybe you have accrued many volunteering hours but would like to secure a leadership role or maybe you’ve attended lots of skills sessions and would like to use those skills working for us next year. It is also a way of showing prospective employers the many activities you have been involved in, demonstrating the transferable skills and experiences you’ve picked up during your time studying. We will also advise you on how you can effectively talk about your skills and experiences and relate them to workplace scenarios.

45

The Leadership Academy is available to all students and entirely bespoke to the individual. We will create a development programme based on your goals for the year and beyond. Financial support

STUDENT LOANS

MAINTENANCE LOANS

TUITION FEE LOANS

You may be eligible for financial support from the government to help you with the cost of living during your studies. Contact our student hub on students@bnu.ac.uk for more information.

The most common way to fund your degree is with a student loan that covers all your tuition fees - and you won’t be asked to pay back a penny until you’ve graduated and earning over the government threshold. Find out more at gov.uk/student-finance.

You can apply for both of these loans from February before you start university and the earlier the better to ensure that you are paid on time in September. You don’t need to have made your final choice of university to apply – just put your first choice and you can edit your application at any point up to enrolment.

47

There may be additional financial help and benefits that you are able to claim depending on your personal circumstances. gov.uk/student-finance is the best place to start.

Aminah’s story BNU GAVE ME THE SKILLS I NEED TO SUCCEED Hi, my name’s Aminah and I am in my second year of Creative Advertising at Buckinghamshire New University (BNU). I chose Creative Advertising at BNU because I wanted a course that not only prepared me for the advertising industry but also gave me great support and a strong relationship with my lecturers as well as a sense of community. And that is exactly what I got coming here! We are a close knit university where we feel a lot like a family, supporting each other and encouraging each other to succeed. BNU gives us the confidence to feel ready to step into the industry and specifically on my Creative Advertising course, every year I feel more and more prepared to take on any challenges the industry could bring my way. Since starting my second year of Creative Advertising, we have already worked on live briefs given to us by huge advertising agencies such as BBH and Oliver and worked on brands like Duolingo, GymShark and Babybel. In the first month of this academic year, we had already gone to London and pitched our ideas on a brief at BBH. This is only possible as we have so many alumni that now work in the industry and continue to support BNU students by giving them placements, and other industry opportunities.

53

Our classes are very practical and hands on, we tend to spend most of our lessons working collaboratively and bouncing ideas off of each other. What I love about our courses is how the University has created a space that feels and functions like a real Advertising Studio. It makes our day to day learning a lot more fun and helps us get used to how we would be working with others in a similar setting in the industry. I cannot wait to see where I will go from here, as BNU has shown me that my opportunities are endless.

There is a real demand for nurses and midwives around the country – if you have the compassion, care and courage needed, a degree in these areas will teach you everything you need to know to kickstart your career. Once you complete this course, you’ll be able to join as a Registered Nurse or Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), which enables you to practice in the UK .

It is about the professional care of mothers – before, during, and after the birth of their child; helping to keep them safe and comfortable during this intimate and life-changing experience. Throughout the course we take a blended learning approach, with on-campus and distance teaching, alongside time out in practice. You will build up your knowledge of the normal physiological processes to facilitate pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period, as well as understanding how to care for those with additional needs and in emergency situations. When on placement, you will be exposed to a wide range of maternity services, along with access to specialist midwives and services for you to develop your skills in caring for women across the different stages of care. Upon graduating and registering with the NMC , you will have the opportunity to join teams of midwives that care for women across a variety of areas including labour wards, ward areas and out in the community, whilst providing continuity to those you care for. Some midwives may also choose to become part of the core staff required in hospitals and support the maternity services that way.

121

Course areas + Professional Policing + Police Studies & Criminal Investigation

COURSE LISTING P142

There is a growing demand for police officers and non-warranted police staff across the UK . We’ve designed our policing courses to help fill this void and prepare you to take the challenges of this sector head on. The courses do take a broader look at policing beyond the police constable role, so if you’re interested in areas such as criminal justice and security too, then BNU may be a great fit for you. We have worked in partnership with Thames Valley Police for over 15 years to deliver policing programmes, alongside our relationship with the College of Policing. These courses, and the lecturers that deliver them, offer a broad examination of policing and related activities, meaning you will be able to make an informed decision about your future career destination. As well as learning from our experienced academics (who have or still do work in their specialist areas), we often bring in practitioners to deliver guest talks covering contemporary policing topics.

Throughout the course, students are also supported with specialised facilities on campus, such as our Police Code of Practice Suite. Included in the suite is a mock bedsit, custody desk and suspect interview room, as well as adjoining seminar rooms with a live audio and video feed. In here, you’ll get to practise core policing processes, such as arrest and interview of suspects as well as searching premises, in a safe, controlled environment. As well as simulating real life scenarios, getting tangible work experience also helps bring the theory to life and enhance your employability in the sector. Through our partnership with Thames Valley Police, you will be able to apply for a volunteer Special Constable position while studying for your degree. Selection to perform this voluntary Special Constable role is subject to a selection process and criteria owned by Thames Valley Police. Whilst many of our graduates from this programme have successfully gained employment in the police force, others have followed careers within the wider criminal justice system and beyond.

The teaching staff are excellent; my course leaders are amazing and answer all questions that I have, they are extremely knowledgeable in their field. SOPHIE

Open Days & Applicant Visit Days We offer a number of campus and virtual Open Days on our High Wycombe campus with Nursing and Midwifery students able to visit the Uxbridge and Aylesbury Campuses. FIND OUT WHY BNU COULD BE THE PLACE FOR YOU! We understand that when it comes to deciding where you’d like to study, there are a lot of things to consider and our Open Days are a great place to start. Whether you can attend in person, or online, our Open Days offer a great opportunity to find out more about your chosen course, meet the course team, and get all your questions answered.

145

OPEN DAYS

APPLICANT VISIT DAYS

At our Open Days you will:

If you have applied to BNU, why not join us for an Applicant Visit Day. We will try to answer all of your questions, show you around campus and our accommodation (High Wycombe events only), give you a chance to talk to our current students and our Students’ Union, find out what support is available.

discover more about your chosen course and meet the course team

take a tour of our High Wycombe campus and accommodation; Nursing and Midwifery students will also be able to visit our Uxbridge and Aylesbury campuses to see where they may be taught

find out more about student finance, accommodation, the admissions process and student support

chat to staff and students to find out what it is really like to study at BNU

know more about our top 2 Students’ Union (National Student Survey 2022), which offers a broad range of free activities through our BIG Deal scheme.

If you have already been to an open day you may feel that all your questions have been answered – don’t worry you don’t have to come to an Applicant Visit day, but you are very welcome. It will be a different experience to the Open Day and you would get to meet fellow applicants who could be your course mates next year.
