Fishing Coffs Coast

Bellinger River

What is it? An estuary system with great land based and boat based fishing options. Both the Bellinger/Kalang systems are recreational fishing havens closed to commercial fishing – and they are full of fish!

Where is it? Approximately 25 minutes drive south of Coffs harbor, the best access point is to follow the river to the small town of Mylestom.

What’s there? If you head all the way to Mylestom, you’ll find the tidal swimming pool which offers fantastic land based fishing options, as well as the Mylestom shop and playgrounds, perfect to keep the kids occupied.

There are 2 boat ramps at Mylestom to access the river by boat, and the pontoon is also a great land based spot – just remember to make way for boats that need to use the facility! There are several artificial reefs in the Bellinger river which offer great fish habitat, one of which is right near the boat ramps – look for the yellow markers).

What fish should I target? The river is full of Bream, Whiting and Flathead. You’ll also find some good Luderick and if persistent there are some great Mulloway.

For the kids The tidal pool at Mylestom is a safe place to fish and swim, with a playground on the hill above. Just watch small children near the edges of the pool if fishing. What lures are best? Paddle tail and curl tail plastics up to 120mm are great for the flats and deeper holes, also try some smaller 2” grubs and hard body minnows around snags and edges too

Best time to fish? It’s a great spot with excellent fishing all year round.

What dream fish might I catch?

What bait should I use? Prawns and whitebait are great but the best is live nippers pumped fresh from the sand flats.

The system holds some monster Jewfish, and stories of Flathead close to the meter mark are becoming common.
