For the kids The banks along Atherton drive are safe for all ages and the board walk at the lagoon is great to take a walk and see lots of fish and wildlife!
Kalang River What is it? An estuary system that shares the Bellinger River mouth. Both the Bellinger/Kalang systems are recreational fishing havens closed to commercial fishing – and they are full of fish!
Where is it? Best access is from the Atherton Drive area at Urunga, about 30 minutes drive south of Coffs Harbour. Look for South Arm Road for access further up the river.
What’s there? Urunga is a coastal town on the banks of the Kalang River. There are 2 good boat ramps and plenty of spots to pull up along the riverbank for a fish. The boardwalk at Urunga Lagoon provides access to the
river mouth/beach and there is some great fishing around the lagoon and along the rock walls. For those with a boat or kayak, the river around Newry Island is speed restricted so is a great place to find some calm stretches of river to flick a lure or drift for a flathead. If you want to venture a little further up the river, take South Arm Road for to find some quiet places out of the way to fish the banks, or there is a makeshift ramp suitable for kayaks or small boats.
What bait should I use? Prawns, whitebait, pilchards and live nippers will all work well.
What lures are best? Smaller 2-3” soft plastics and hard bodies work well around the many oyster leases in the Kalang, as well as larger 80-120mm curl and paddle tail plastics in the deeper areas.
Best time to fish? You will find good fish all year round in the Kalang.
What dream fish might I catch? What fish should I target? Whiting and Flathead on the sand flats near the mouth are great and there are plenty of Bream.
There are some big Whiting that cruise the flats near the mouth on a high tide, get some live nippers or even try a small clear popper to get amongst these kidney slappers!
