Do you know what the school board is? Well if not, the School Board is a local governing body of the school district or the charter of the school. So, if you did not know, the school board came a couple months ago, and they pulled a few strings to get the school newspaper team a tour of the Lewiston Tribune on March 7! What a bunch of lucky ducks!

The Lewiston Tribune was established in 1892 by two men whose names were Eugene and Albert Alford. The tribune is 131 years old. When it began, it was a four page newspaper and only had two issues a week. They couldn’t afford daily newspapers until 1892. It is said if you touch the nose of the Sphinx you will have good luck for the rest of the day. The owner of the Lewiston Tribune is Nathan Alford.

The Tour

During our tour we had an opportunity to see how you get your newspaper each day. Some things we were able to see were the press, the ink storage, the wall of photos, and the museum of newspaper printers.

The museum of the presses

The museum of the presses is all the presses throughout the tribune. One of the presses was so hot that the writers were able to cook their sandwiches on it!

The press

The press takes about 20 minutes to get up and running, but after that it’s on a roll. Printing 50 newspapers in 5 seconds as you can see in the pictures, and I got to go on top of the press because my aunt works at the tribune so I got the trip of a lifetime. The speeds are up to about 70-100 mph ( miles per hour.)

The wall of photos

The wall of photos is a history wall made of all the years of full page photos taken.

Mrs. Gomez is the Best!

National Principal’s Day!

Do you know what holiday takes place on May 1st? Well, it’s Principal’s Day! Most of you know that Mrs. Gomez is our school principal. Here are what some people said about our amazing principal, Mrs. Gomez.

What is the best thing about Mrs. Gomez?

Jurnee Jones-”She is really nice and funny.”

Zoey Falk- ”She gives you hugs whenever you want them.”

Mr. Shriver- ”She is really good at hiding Easter Eggs.”

Mrs. Bozzuto- ”Mrs. Gomez handles every situation with love. She is also a Planning Patty, and an Organized Olga.”

Kinsley Shell-”She is kind, and gives me a hug every day.”

Mrs. Stefanchik-”Her laugh.”

Mrs. Amanda-”I really appreciate that she is extremely supportive and always on my team, and that she cares very deeply for all the students and teachers at our school.”

Mr. Harper-”Mrs. Gomez and I have a spirit animal connection.”

Mrs. Haag-”She is an awesome leader.”

Mr. Armitage-”She has high expectations and cares for all staff and students.”

Mrs. Cornell-”She always helps us with whatever we need.”

In conclusion, you could obviously tell that Mrs. Gomez is the best principal ever! In my article you saw some amazing and of course some hilarious opinions on Mrs. Gomez.

And the Idaho GEM Award Goes to....

Mrs. Gomez!!!!

Here is one of the things that was said about the amazing Mrs. Gomez in one of her nomiation letters. Throughout my life, I never learned to play chess. People that do play, talk about how intellectual and strategic it can be. Some of the best players are able to anticipate their opponents moves in advance. Knowing the value of each chess piece, knowing how to use them, and getting the most out of them during each game. When I think of the game of chess, Principal Jennifer Gomez at Orchards Elementary comes to mind. She is a master at strategically maneuvering all of the pieces that go into a public elementary school. She has the amazing ability to form positive relationships with all stakeholders at Orchards. Her knowledge of teaching and best practices is at the highest level. She has high expectations and expects to win each day. Jennifer Gomez is the best principal (and possibly best chess player) that I know.

Water Activities

In the summer it’s hot out and what is the best thing to do on a hot summer day… SWIM! Some places you can swim are: Orchards Pool, the Aquatic Center, and the Snake river. I recommend going to the river and swimming, because the water is nice and refreshing on a hot summer day! Now if you don’t want to swim, you can have a water balloon fight, a squirt gun fight, or you can run through sprinklers! Over the summer if you camp, you could go to Hells Gate or Dworshak.

Outside Activities

Do you ever have a hard time deciding what to do outside? Well you can go to the track at Sacajawea and ride a bike or scooter, you can go to your backyard or your local park and play in your yard. Some fun yard games could be; hop scotch, tag, hide and seek, corn hole, kick the can, four square, red rover, and capture the flag. Some things you can do with your family include; plant a garden, fly a kite, make a sand castle, make an obstacle course, and

Now let’s talk about some nice, refreshing foods, and drinks to have over summer break. Some foods include; watermelon, apples, bananas, hotdogs, hamburgers, steak, popcorn, s’mores, kabob, pineapple, corn, and pie, according to eat this.com. Some drinks include; lemonade, juice, water, kool aid, and milk. These foods and drinks should keep you hydrated over the summer. I do recommend having some barbecues.

Honey Bees

Paetyn Rowell 2 grade Orchards tribune

Buzz! Buzz! Yep, you guessed it! It’s a bee, a honey bee to be exact. Bees make a buzzing noise because of their wings.

When you spot a bee, don’t be alarmed; they play an important role like pollinating the flowers. It’s that time of year when all the bees come and do their busy

work. Honey bees are insects that pollinate flowers and help the cycle of life with germination of plants. They pollinate ⅓ of our food. Some items include apples, almonds, broccoli, strawberries, cucumbers, and cotton. Without them our food supply would dwindle.

Ouch! That honey bee stung me. It hurts. They don’t just sting you to be mean, but it’s their way of defending themselves. What they don’t know is when they choose you as their victim, they soon die. Which is one less bee that we need. So don’t try to make them mad. Bees are also important because they make honey.

I like bees and think they are cute. A honey bee worker makes 1/12 of a teaspoon in her lifetime. It is said that a honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by men and women.

Michelle’s Favorite Candy Recommendations #2

Michelle Parris, 4th grade

Orchards Tribune

Have you ever heard of a candy critic? I am one and I eat candy a lot! I share with people my favorite candies! Does this sound like a fun job? Well it is and it is tasty.

them for a good price. In my opinion the red ones are the best flavor.

Laffy Taffy

Have you ever wondered what the best candy in the world is? Laffy Taffy is not the best but it is the closest. (Remember, we all have our own opinions.) Laffy Taffy is another one of my favorites because when you open the wrapper, the scent comes to your nose and is so deliciously strong and I love strong sweet scents. Also, why I think you should try this candy is because it is chewy and sometimes soft. I think this candy would be the best candy to make anything out of anything.

I hope you enjoyed the second edition of Michelle’s favorite candy recommendations. Remember to always stay sweet! So if you like chewy and soft things, sour stuff, and good prices, go try these candies because you might just like them. If you would like to hear more people’s recommendations on candy go to www. Candymyopinon.org

cle I will be talking about Dairy Queen’s environment, the taste of the food and the service. If you want to hear my opinion read more.

The environment in Dairy Queen is nice, but one thing I would like to change is where the bathrooms are. The bathrooms are in a corner with a turn. One thing I like about the bathrooms is they are big. One thing I love about Dairy Queen is their seating. The seating is very big and it has a big corner with soft seating. I give the environment a 3 out of 5.

The Food

Slime Licker

Do you like slime licker or have you ever heard of them? If you haven’t, they are a bottle that has juice at the bottom and has a ball at the top where the juice is on it and it spins. But, warning. It is sour! There are so many flavors and kinds of slime lickers, such as cherry, blue raspberry, and raspberry. Also you can put other drinks in the slime licker after you finish the juice, because it is a candy that has a lid.

Twizzlers

Twizzlers are another of my favorites because they have so many beautiful colors and so many flavors. Also, they have a good chewy taste. They give you a lot of

I Scream You Scream We All Scream for Ice Cream

Hailey Ortiz, 4th grade Orchards Tribune

Introduction

Do you like ice cream, fries, or a nice place to eat? Well, if so, I recommend Dairy Queen. Dairy Queen is so delicious and it is actually a really nice and quiet place to eat. Dairy Queen makes almost everything. They sell ice cream cakes, ice cream, burgers, fries, ice cream, sundaes, blizzards, and so much more. In this arti-

The only reason I come to Dairy Queen is because of the food, the food is the BEST part. In my opinion, ice cream is the best. My favorite ice cream is the Chocolate Brownie Extreme. I love it because it is so chocolaty and it has brownie and chocolate bits in it. One thing I love about the food is it is alway how you want it. If you want more brownies all you have to do is ask! I give the food a 5 out of 5 .

The Service

Another important thing about Dairy Queen is the service. The service is one of the most important things that a (I Screan-continued on page 7)

Did you know that if your blizzard dumps on the floor when they tip it upside down they will give you a new one for free. I give the service a 4 out of 5.

Conclusion

In conclusion, now that I told you my opinion about Dairy Queen’s, environment, the food, and the service. Is your opinion different? Well if it is I would love to hear your opinion. You can give me a note or see me at recess. I rate Dairy Queen 8 unicorns out of 10 unicorns. By reading my article did it change your opinion?

The River Wide Known Steelhead

Averie Hendren, 5th Grade Orchards Tribune

You have probably noticed that the steelhead have arrived in the fish tank by the office, but many of you probably don’t know a lot about them. Well if you don’t, you are in the right place. In this article I will be teaching you about the life cycle, habitat, and diet of a steelhead. All of these are really important factors in a steelhead’s life, and I guarantee that after you read this, you will be an expert on steelhead. Enjoy!

Have you ever seen a steelhead egg? Well if you know one thing about fish, it is that they don’t stay in their egg forever. When the steelhead is in its egg, eventually you will be able to see two little black dots, now you might be wondering, “ What are those black dots?” They are actually the baby steelhead’s eyes. After a while the baby steelhead will break through the egg so then it will look like a really small fish with an

egg sac which is called a fry. Then eventually the egg sac will get smaller and smaller until it is gone. By then, the fish will start to pop up to the surface looking for food. Once the steelhead are old enough, the 5th graders get to release them into the Snake River so that they can find their way to the ocean, and after a few years, they will migrate or come back to the Snake River to spawn more eggs. Another important factor in a steelhead’s life is having the right habitat. Having a good habitat for a steelhead means making

the water to keep it clean. As you can tell, making sure that the steelhead has a healthy habitat requires a lot of different needs. In order to make sure that the steelhead grow big and strong, they not only just need a healthy habitat, they also need food! Wild steelheads eat mollusks, crustaceans, fish eggs, minnows, and other small fishes. But, hatchery steelheads can’t find all of the food that wild steelheads eat. Therefore, when they’re in the sac fry stage transitioning to the button fry stage, they eat tiny animals in the water called zooplankton. When the steelhead gets bigger, insects, small fish, and fish eggs are also on the menu.

sure that the water is the right temperature, or that there is enough space for all of the steelhead to have room to swim around and get larger and stronger. Also, you have to make sure that there is a filter in the water so that when the steelhead produces waste in the water the filter takes out the waste in

In conclusion, you have learned about a steelhead’s life cycle, a steelhead’s habitat, and a steelhead’s diet. I hope you have enjoyed taking the time to learn more about steelhead trout! Now that you know more about the steelhead the next time that you walk past the tank you will know everything that you need to know about steelhead! I told you that you would be an expert!

5th Graders vs. Teachers Kickball Game!

Azzlyn

Introduction

In this article we will teach you about the kickball game that happens once a year. Did you know that at the end of the year there is an intense kickball game?

5TH GRADE VS. TEACHERS? Kickball is a really fun game for our teachers and for the 5th grade students to play.

Why Only 5th Grade Plays

If you’re wondering why you don’t get to play in the kickball game it’s because 5th grade is going to middle school and the teachers want to make the 5th graders feel special. Since it is the 5th graders last year in elementary school and our Orchards family will miss them. That is why only 5th graders play, don’t worry you’ll get to play someday soon!

How To Play

If you don’t know how to play kickball, we will teach you! If the teachers are outfield first, they will roll the ball to you and you will kick it as hard as you can. The teachers will then try to get the ball and throw it at you to get you out! If you touch all 3 bases then touch the base you kicked from, you get home and that’s a run! Or you might be outfield. If you’re outfield, try to catch the ball, or if you’re a pitcher, you need to roll the ball to the teacher who is kicking. Make sure you don’t throw bad, they might call it a ball!

Tips For Kickball

To 5th grade (or anyone who is interested in kickball): here are some tips to win! Tip one: Mr. Armitage and Mr. Shriver can catch the ball really well, so I recommend kicking the ball on the ground so they can’t catch it. Tip two: you may think they aren’t that fast so they can’t get you out. Well some of the teachers are as fast as a cheetah so run quickly to your next base so they can’t get you out!

Where You Sit

In this paragraph we’ll teach you about what you do. If you’re not in 5th grade, you will get to sit on the grass and eat ice cream (Mrs. Knudsen usually serves ice cream). When you are sitting you are allowed to cheer/chant for 5th grade or the teachers. You can whisper but not scream to your friends. You won’t be allowed to get up and move around (unless you ask to go to the bathroom, then you could go to the bathroom).

Conclusion

In summary, we taught you about why you don’t get to play kickball (if you’re not 5th grade). I also hope you know how to play kickball now! We taught you about tips for kickball and how to win, as well what you do if you’re not in 5th grade. All of the 5th graders are encouraged to play as one of their last times interacting with the teachers.

The Spectacular Fourth Grade Powwow Trip

Ashira Mast & Ayla Aaseby, 4th grade Orchards Tribune

Last month, fourth graders in the district took a trip to Lewis-Clark State College

to see a real powwow. In fourth grade you get to learn about Idaho History and the powwow is a Native American tradition. At a powwow you learn about Native Americans dances, music differences, and culture. This powwow trip was our first field trip on our Idaho history learning journey.

Before the students got into the gym to see the powwow, they let all of the students go into teepees! There were many amazing things we saw. There were even Native American drums.

At the powwow we got to see the children, men, and women of the Nez Perce tribe dance together. They dressed in Native clothing. During the powwow they used their vocal cords a lot, it was intense and had shared a really strong message. The music and dancing was very creative and amusing. The men would wear feathers. They picked people from the crowd to dance with. At the end, they told the crowd that everyone could come up and dance in a circle who wanted to. Do you know why they call it the powwow? Well, it is because of an opportunity to strengthen community bonds and to catch up with those who had become part of another tribe. So this was our Spectacular Fourth Grade Field trip.

May Days

Bro and Sis Day!

they know she was just doing her job to help take care of them. She also told me how lucky she is to have them and how she gets to love their kids too.

Remember the word “cherish” from the first paragraph? According to the Oxford Languages Dictionary it means “verb: protect and care for (someone) lovingly.” Remember to spend time with your siblings and have lots of fun. We are very lucky to have our brothers and or sisters, even if they drive us nuts sometimes. I hope you have a fun siblings day!

May the 4th

Have you ever been mean or done something hurtful to your brother or sister? Or maybe ignored them on purpose? Did you know that May 2nd is National Brothers’ and Sisters’ Day? It is a day to remind us to cherish our brothers and sisters.

According to nationaltoday.com the holiday was “created after an unknown woman lost her brother and realized how she never let him know how much he meant to her.” It is a day about spending quality time with our brothers or sisters and appreciating our bond with each other.

I decided to ask one of my Aunts about her memories when she was little with her siblings. She told me how they would have fun playing together using their imaginations and doing chores with each other. She also talked about how they would fight or sometimes call her bossy, because she was the oldest sister. Little did

Fisher Weatherly, 3rd grade Orchards Tribune

Do you know what May the 4th means? It’s based off of a pun, as it sounds like May the force be with you from Star Wars. I will tell you a few fun facts and things to do on the day.

May the fourth be with you is what they say in Star Wars, like when someone says “may the force be with you,” to wish someone well. So you might just be thinking “Oh it’s just a joke,” but it’s actually an iconic day for some. People all over the world celebrate Star Wars Day.

Star Wars is originally a series of Sci-Fi movies that started in the 70’s. There are 9 movies altogether. The movies came out in a weird order. It started with episodes 4, 5, and 6, then years later episodes 1, 2, and 3. Then finally, 7, 8, and 9. The movies are very popular all over the world.

There are a lot of things you can

do on Star Wars day. The first thing you can do is watch some or all of the movies and tv shows. The second thing you can do is play some of the Star Wars games available, my favorite is the Lego Star Wars game on the Nintendo Switch. Another thing you could do is read some of the Star Wars comics and books. Some people even like to dress up as their favorite character.

In the end, May the 4th is a day for celebrating all things Star Wars. You can dress up, you can read, you can watch, you can play. Anyway you celebrate, may the force be with you.

Mother’s Day Around the World

Orchards

Did you know that in different cultures they celebrate Mother’s Day differently than we do here? Well, if you didn’t know that already then you will enjoy this article. I chose 5 different cultures to teach you about. The cultures I chose are Mexico, Egypt, France, India, Russia. Now, let’s hear about some of those Mother’s Day celebrations.

Mexico

Did you know that people in Mexico celebrate similarly to how Americans do. They buy their moms flowers and other cool gifts, but they also have a great celebration they do at school, and they always perform, and they even include something called Mariachi Serenades.

Egypt

Egypt certainly has one of the craziest celebrations I ever heard of. They treat all the mothers like queens and they grant their mothers a special day full of relaxation while other members of the household take over their routine full of chores. In Egypt they even celebrate on a different day than we do here. They celebrate on March 21st.

France

In France, Mother’s Day involves food and flowers and a fun day out and about. They have picnics in the park and go all the way up to a river cruise. That’s so crazy right? With all that it is known to be said, in France Mother’s Day is generally celebrated as a treasured family holiday.

India

India is one of the best countries I’ve heard of because it is very practical and it’s exactly like what we do but, a little bit

more exciting. They do breakfast in bed, make cute cards and flowers, along with traditional gifts. Along with all that information, discounts are offered and there are special tv segments dedicated to all the mothers. Some schools are also known for putting on plays for their mothers.

Russia

In Russia, they actually celebrate on a different day. They actually celebrate on the 26th of November. They get flowers and gifts like how we do here. But in Russia they have a traditional dance that they end up doing every time they do an emotional message showcase. They also like to go out for dinner with family and friends.

I hope you enjoyed my article about how other cultures celebrate Mother’s Day. What was your favorite tradition? Mine was definitely France. Would you ever try to celebrate like this?

The Banana Trout of Mann’s Lake

Max Hight, 1st Grade Orchards Tribune

My family and I recently went to Mann’s Lake to catch a banana trout. A banana trout is a type of albino rainbow trout. It gets it’s name because the scales are yellow, but they don’t taste like bananas!

First, we had to dig up worms to use as bait. We bottom fished, which means fishing on the bottom of the lake. We used ½ oz weights and size 6 snell hooks. We put the worms on the hooks. It took about 30 minutes to catch a banana trout, it was hard! It took me a lot of attempts before hooking one. To land a fish, you have to set the hook by whipping the line and rod. Then you step back and reel. After you land a fish, you can set it free or

Perfect Peaceful Picture of the Month

Lyla Thompson, 5th grade Orchards Tribune

There are a lot of people out there that love photography. The moments of all of the beautiful photos that you can capture, and all of the sights that you can see are just so beautiful. Photography is not just about having a camera and taking pictures, it’s also a form of being an artist. That is why the newspaper is adding a picture of the month article to the grand list of many monthly articles.

This is a picture of a Chinese Hibiscus. This picture is the Perfect Peaceful Picture of the Month. This picture was picked to be the Perfect Peaceful Picture of the Month because it stood out differently from all of the rest. While coming into May you get to see all of the beautiful colors of spring. And this photo shows all of the beautiful colors that spring will ever need. The month of May is known as the plant month, which is another reason why this photo was the special pick.

This picture is a picture of a Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis or also known as a Chinese Hibiscus. This picture was taken in Kona, Hawaii during our spring break. In China this is their version of a rose so they call it a China Rose. This flower can be found in a lot of tropical regions, not just in China. These flowers are found on bushes, these bushes are actually called Chinese Hibiscus Shrub. The bushes are about 4-10 feet in height and 5-8 feet in width.

The Chinese Hibiscus is a real- ly cool flower. All of the wonderful qualities that this amazing flower has. It is a very beautiful flower to inspect and look at. It also has a scent that is wonderful, sweet and floral. Of course all of the reasons for why the Perfect Peaceful Picture of the Month was picked all add up to a wonderful chosen Perfect Peaceful Picture of the Month that fits in with both spring and the month of may.
