Finally and thankfully, things are starting to feel very different to when we last printed. To-be-weds and wedding suppliers will be in agreement, I’m sure, about just how wonderful it is to see the industry at capacity once more. Weddings are happening all the time and many vendors are so busy they’re booked out for months or years ahead. And a hugely successful Your Wedding Exhibition in March (it’ll be back to January in 2023 – read all about it on page 12) suggests this is set to continue for the So,foreseeable.whatcan you look forward to in this issue?

“Our first three wedding dates were at Maryculter House Hotel (it has such a cosy feel to it, and so many photo opportunities) but I couldn’t face starting again for a fourth time. Thankfully, I came across Schivas Steading. When we first viewed, it was a shell with a long way to go until completion, but I loved that no-one had been married there before. And it ticked all the boxes – grounds, amazing views and a steading that fitted perfectly with our enchanted forest theme. Like many couples, Sarah-Louise Ingram and Scott Fraser were forced to rearrange and reimagine their wedding several times over so when the day finally arrived (fourth time lucky!), they were beyond delighted. Sarah-Louise tells us more…

We made the space our own by adding rustic décor peppered with blush pink, made even more magical with lots of candles, fairy lights, uplighters and six-foot cherry blossom trees. I made what I could (our welcome sign, favours, place settings and menus) as I really enjoy crafting… I even dyed all the napkins to fit the theme! I have a candle-making business, Cairnwell Candle Company, so popped candles in my wedding perfume scent on the tables. The place smelled amazing! The bridal party matched our theme beautifully – the girls in dreamy tulle and sequin dresses and the boys kilted up in grey with blush pink ties. For me, I had a photo of my dress before I even went shopping… But it didn’t stop me trying numerous others! ‘The One’ was a champagne Mikado ballgown with delicate lace and bead detail. A crafter at heart, I personalised it by adding glass buttons to the cuffs, the back and the train. What I loved most about it, though, was that while it looked like a one-piece, the huge skirt came off and the bodice continued into a fishtail gown. Everyone was taken aback when I reappeared for the evening with a completely new look – but still in the same top half of my dress! We stayed at Schivas the night before (we actually had the house for three nights, so it was great to have everyone together the day after we said: “I do”) and despite being up since 4.30am, the wedding morning was really relaxed and calm. Even the rain wasn’t phasing me! I was just so excited the day had arrived after rescheduling so many times. That vibe continued throughout the day –relaxed and laid-back, not spending hours separated from our guests while we had photos done. We wanted them to enjoy our day as much as we did.
We had a sentimental yet funny humanist ceremony, where we wrote our own vows and included both sets of parents with the lighting of candles. Then the Kilted Sax took us back up the aisle with Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love to get the party started and set the scene for the next few years! Our wedding meal… Well, everyone is still talking about it! It was an informal barbeque feast with lots of main course options, from steaks and salmon to burgers and curries. It tasted amazing and most people were back for seconds.

From start to finish, it was so much more than we could have imagined. Having all our family and friends together after being in lockdown for 16 months was so special and we just didn’t want it to end. It still felt surreal that I had finally married my best friend.” ♥
The first thing we did was set a budget and prioritise. And top of the list was the venue. We knew this would probably be the most expensive part of the wedding so we wanted to find the perfect place. We spotted Schivas Steading in Grampian Wedding Directory, went to have a look and fell in love – not just with the venue, but with the event manager, Nicola, too!

Planning For Real!
“We’ve had quite a long engagement (it’ll be five years before we get married) as my career in sport took priority and we wanted to save up as much as we could. Our priority was to buy our first house together and whatever money was left would be our wedding budget. By new year 2021/22 we had our house and I’d officially retired as an elite athlete, so we had the time to dedicate to wedding planning.
Planning
What better way to explore the world of wedding planning than with a couple who are doing it right now? Meet Olympic swimmer Hannah Miley who'll marry husband-to-be Euan Duff in Aberdeenshire in August. After meeting at a university sporting event, Euan surprised Hannah with an expertly arranged Edinburgh Zoo proposal where an unsuspecting panda was their only audience!
8 ♥ PLANNING
Another key priority was having our dog, Poppy, as the ring bearer and thankfully, Schivas Steading is very dog-friendly! Poppy won Scotland’s Best Dog competition on BBC last year and has been a huge part of keeping us sane through the pandemic. She brings so much joy to our lives and having her come down the aisle will bring our little family together. We’ve already chosen our theme and it’s based around the pretty, versatile and costeffective eucalyptus plant. Colour-wise, we’ll tie in soft sage green and blush pink with splashes of navy. We didn’t want a heavy sporting theme but as it’s what brought us together and it’s still an important part of our lives, there’ll be a very subtle sporting hint within the invitations and table names. Our gift list will be a bit different from the norm. We have the essential house things already but would love to renovate and put our own stamp on the property.

So, we’ve set up a house improvement fund –instead of buying a gift, guests can contribute towards making our house a home. The best part about wedding planning has been going to exhibitions to see all the options available.
I love looking to see what ideas there are and what local businesses do. The hardest part has been the guest list because although we wanted as many people celebrating with us as possible, we had to limit it to stick to our budget. Figuring out who would be day guests and who’d be evening-only has been tricky as we didn’t want anyone to feel downgraded. So, we decided family-only for day guests. Evening guests can still come to the ceremony, but the wedding breakfast will be just for our family. It seems to have gone down well with our friends – they’ll see us say: “I do” and celebrate with us, head off to check into accommodation then return to dance the night away! On that note, my main piece of advice would be not to feel pressured into pleasing everyone – do what makes the two of you happy. We found talking about our priorities for the day helped us manage the planning. Also, you can still have the perfect day while keeping to a budget – by using Pinterest and ‘borrowing’ skills from friends, you can personalise your day without it costing a small fortune.”
A little fun while you plan Take a break from planning and indulge yourself with a hen or stag party – or a joint get-together. A ‘sten do’ is a combined stag and hen do – and it’s a phrase that’s seen a 9900% rise in Google searches! Whether bride and bride, groom and groom or bride and groom, couples are choosing to celebrate together to cater for shared friendship groups, keep budgets down and introduce friends who’d never have met before the big day. Top tip: Murder mystery events are super-popular right now!

After a long two years without an in-person wedding show in Aberdeen, it’s safe to say that everyone made the most of the return of Your Wedding Exhibition at P&J Live at the beginning of 2022. Here’s what happened… A great success overall, from welcoming enthusiastic exhibitors for set-up on Friday to seeing visitors come excitedly through the doors on Saturday and Sunday, Your Wedding Exhibition 2022 was one to Whetherremember.couples with rescheduled weddings or those celebrating new engagements, it was positive feedback all-round from the 2,800 to-be-weds and bridal squads who attended to search for suppliers. And we’re not surprised – with 135 exhibitors over two days plus regular fashion shows, there was so much to see. The much-coveted best stand award went to new, local business From Forty Five, a sister team passionate about party perfection. And there’s only one phrase we can use to describe the fashion shows… Flower power! From floral embellishments on bridal gowns to flowery patterns on mother-of-the-bride outfits, beautiful blooms are clearly key this season. D is for… Disney styles
B is for… Bridal cover-up
If you’re planning a fairytale theme, you’re going to want the most magical dress to go with and, this year, Disney has you covered! Inspired by the style and spirit of your favourite princesses and their stories, Allure Bridal’s new collection promises to turn Disney dreams into reality.
A is for… Alterations Whilst your dream dress may be perfect, it may not quite be perfect for you at first tryon… And this is where the northeast’s talented seamstresses come in! You may find that it needs a big initial alteration – shortened or taken in – or simply a nip and tuck nearer the big day to account for any change in shape before the wedding. Ask your bridal boutique for their recommendations and get booked in in plenty of time.
E is for… Eco-friendly Sustainability is big right now and eco-conscious brides have a number of options for going green with their outfit. From buying preloved, renting or planning to sell on afterwards to committing to a brand that promises sustainably made dresses, you can definitely do your bit.
C is for… Comfort As good as an outfit may look on the hanger, and on you, the most important question to ask yourself is whether or not it’s comfortable. You’re going to be wearing it from almost dusk ‘til dawn and in all sorts of positions – posing for photos, sitting to eat and dancing. Don’t be afraid to test it out for all eventualities in the shop!
From leather jackets to fur coats and capes to boleros, there are so many options for enhancing your wedding outfit with a cool cover-up. Consider your theme, the season and, of course, what you’re wearing. Still not sure? Ask the consultant at your bridal fitting!
F is for… Flower girls One of the cutest parts of a wedding, don’t forget to make your flower girls feel special, too! Take them to their very own dress fitting and make them feel involved on the wedding morning. Why not let them sit in the makeup artist’s chair and pop on some sparkly lip gloss for a real VIP feel?

G is for… Garter The garter is one of the oldest wedding traditions, dating back to 14th century France. They typically come in ruched satin or lace but custom garters can be made however you wish. Be traditional with white, use it as your something blue or go with your wedding theme.

Tell your advisor at the boutique as some dreamy dresses are made for that look! www.simonesmithphotography.com
J is for… Jewellery If you have wedding jewellery in mind – a family heirloom, for example – bring it with you. No jewellery plans? No problem! Many bridal boutiques have stock options, as do the northeast’s high-end jewellers, of course.
I is for… There's no I in team No-one wants to try on wedding outfits alone so gather your fave people for a fun-filled day out! K is for… Knowledge of boutique expert There’s one thing you really need to bring when you go shopping and that’s an open mind! As hard as it may be, put your trust in the experts at the boutiques. They’ve advised more brides than you’ve had hot dinners and they know which styles suit which shapes. Take advantage of their knowledge and ask lots of questions, too! L is for… Lace Lace is a timeless, elegant and romantic choice for a wedding dress but there are so many other materials to explore. Mikado, for example, is a heavy fabric that provides structure for super-sophisticated designs whilst chiffon, a lighter, sheer material, is often used in layers as an overlay.
N is for… Not off the peg Always had a very specific wedding day look in mind? Or just can’t find ‘The One’? Be like our feature bride, Liesbeth, who worked with a talented dressmaker to create the perfect top to pair with her chic, wide-leg trousers. From high necks to plunging necklines and foxy fishtails to vintage-style tea length dresses, try on as many radically different options as you can to narrow down what looks and feels good.
Q is for… Queen for a day Your wedding day is all about you, and your wedding look should be, too. As important as it is to take the advice of the bridal boutique into account, as well as that of your trusted bridal squad, remember that the final decision on your dress/jumpsuit/whatever you decide to wear lies with you.
S is for… Shoes If you already have your wedding shoes, bring them to try-ons with you to get a real feel for the whole outfit. If not, don’t worry – bring a pair with the heel height you’re thinking of, or take advantage of the footwear on offer in the boutique. You never know, you might find your dream dress and shoes in one trip!
P is for… Pockets
R is for… Research Before hitting the shops, arm yourself with plenty of research! Check out inspo on Pinterest and Insta, scour the websites of designers you know you’ll see in store and look at wedding pics of friends and family. You’ll quickly build up and idea of what you like and don’t like.
Having an SOS kit strategically placed in the handbag of one of your bridal squad members is highly recommended! Think safety pins, kirbies and a mini sewing kit for starters. X is for… Xtra special details Many brides find a dress they love but can’t resist making it their own with some extra special details. Go big and add sleeves or keep it simple with a little embellishment. The northeast’s talented seamstresses will be only too happy to sort you out.
T is for… Trying on tips If possible, avoid wearing jewellery when you go for a dress try-on because it might just catch on some of the gorgeous gowns. Likewise with fake tan – no-one wants to stain the sample dresses! And wear comfortable, nude underwear – seamless if possible.
U is for… Underwear
V is for… Veil Whilst a veil isn’t essential, they can be a simply stunning finishing touch. Ask the experts at your boutique what they’d recommend for you and get ready for a little lingo. From birdcage and bandeau to church-length and cathedral-length, there are lots of options!

For years now, chic to-be-weds have been moving away from the traditional look of having ‘maids in identical dresses, complete with matching hair, makeup and shoes. Instead, it’s all about embracing the era of individuality – and we’re here for it, especially as there are now so many style options to choose from for your squad. Modern options have included the same outfit in different colours or, turning the idea on its head, different outfits in the same shade. Now, though, there are even more options – especially as sustainability has crept up the agenda.
The idea of your girls being able to wear their outfit again is a key consideration for many eco-aware brides and their socially responsible ‘maids. Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth and rapper Drake ranked highly, whilst big screen names Brad Pitt, Ryan Reynolds and Leonardo DiCaprio, and basketballer LeBron James, also made the top ten. Drake Sleek, sophisticated and oh-so-bold, Drake’s white-on-black tuxedo from the 2017 NBA Awards is well-worth replicating. Combine a cream tailored dinner jacket with a crisp white dinner shirt and tailored-fit trousers then finish off with a brilliant bow tie.

We love nothing more than when a wonderful local supplier ties the knot, so we simply couldn’t wait to speak to florist Liesbeth Romani about her and Stuart McEwing’s “very informal, unweddingy wedding” at beautiful Ballogie House. If you love the idea of bucking tradition and fully doing you, get ready for some serious inspo… “I fell in love with Ballogie House on a work shoot there back in 2018, so when we got engaged I showed pictures to Stu and we booked it without him even seeing it! We spend a lot of time outdoors and it was important to get married somewhere that if weather didn’t allow us to be outside, it was still full of natural light. The orangery at Ballogie was perfect. We love entertaining at home so wanted our wedding to resemble that – a delicious meal followed by dancing round the kitchen. It was a home from home vibe; fun and relaxed with lots of booze and good food. I knew it’d be dark when we ate so wanted to create a cosy, atmospheric vibe. We hung fairy lights and stars from the orangery roof and had lots of candles on the tables.

When it came to the rest of the décor, I didn’t have a clue what I wanted and was too busy thinking about other peoples’ weddings. I ordered our flowers just a few days before we got married and had thought very little about colours before that. It really was a case of what was available on the market that day and we landed up with lots of lovely warm reds and vibrant pinks. Having a lot of flowers was important to me but again, I wanted it to resemble our house and style –and funnily enough I rarely have flowers in the house! When I do, I never really mix them. So, I went for a lot of vases full of flowers, all one type per vase. I wanted it to look impactful but clean cut and not fussy. I didn’t actually go dress shopping. I’m very much a leggings, trainers and hoodie kinda girl and never really wear dresses. I wanted to feel special but still me. I found the wide-leg trousers quickly on ASOS but struggled to find a top I liked, so went to visit Nina Edge and we designed one together. I told her what I liked and didn’t like and put my full trust in her and her team. I’m a strong believer in leaving the expert to do what they do best, and I couldn’t have been happier with what they did. I left it entirely up to my bridesmaids to decide what they wanted to wear – matching, different, anything – and they both loved the gorgeous olive-green dress from Ivory Grace. Stuart wanted to wear a kilt but feel relaxed and comfortable so teamed it with a fine knit jumper. Quite a few guests followed suit – it was such a lovely look.
The wedding morning was super chilled. We all got ready together and had a drinks reception prior to the ceremony because we wanted to spend as much of the day as possible with our guests. We were adamant we didn’t want a big entrance, and I didn’t want to walk down the aisle, so we said to Clare, our celebrant, to give a little ‘ching ching’ on her glass and marry us when she felt the moment was right.

Lots of laughter, love and tears! Our meal was amazing. We’re big foodies and recreated a meal we’d recently had in Edinburgh. It was fillet of beef, cooked to perfection and carved on the table by a few of our guests, accompanied by lots of sharing sides. It was followed by a dessert table full of our favourites and instead of a cake, we went for Wark Farm pies and doughnuts later in the evening. The speeches were short, sweet and full of laughs, and we opted out of having a first dance. Instead, we had a playlist of songs requested by our guests and a cocktail bar. It was genuinely perfect. We always wanted a small, intimate day and Ballogie was the perfect place to host a cosy home from home wedding over a whole weekend. Advice for other couples? Talking of those sumptuous materials, swapping to a silk or satin pillowcase can help minimise breakage whilst you sleep. Breakage happens when hair is wet, too – invest in a microfibre towel to help reduce this.
Finally, your hair can get dry and depleted between wash days so keep it nourished by oiling your lengths between washes.

The closer your wedding day looms, the more care you need to be taking of your hair. Nature-inspired designs Besides conjuring up innovative and striking designs, working with nature is key for many florists – and they take inspiration from spending time in nature. More natural, organic designs are becoming increasingly popular with couples embracing the fact that flowers don’t always grow into a perfect shape as expected – rather they grow in various directions and that’s what makes them beautiful. Go for organically arranged floral centrepieces for a cool, artistic vibe in your wedding room.

Santorini (number of Instagram tags: 7 million)
Perched atop an impressive cliff face and surrounded by turquoise sea, lies the beautiful Greek island of Santorini. If you don’t mind the crowds, head to the northern village of Oia for the ultimate sunset proposal. Or for a more private experience, book a table at a restaurant in Ammoudi Bay or in the village of Imerovigli.
Paris’ Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular proposal destinations in the world with around 20 proposals happening each day! The only downside is that the area around the Eiffel Tower, known as the Trocadero, can get very busy. For a quieter spot, try the Pont de BirHakeim bridge. It has been featured in several movies and offers excellent views of the Eiffel Tower – with fewer people.

Overall, we just wanted something fun and relaxed after the pandemic causing so much stress for everyone (I and many of our guests work for the NHS). We knew our wedding may be one of the first ‘normal’ events people would be going to and we just wanted them to enjoy it. The colour scheme organically became based on pink and sequins after picking the bridesmaids’ dresses. The girls all had different skin tones and hair colours, but we found a dress they all looked gorgeous in and went from there. Spring means the most gorgeous colours of flowers are available, so everything tied together well. The greens in the kilts and the guys’ brown shoes complimented the surroundings of Banchory Lodge. We hired Cobbleheugh, the cottage on the Banchory Lodge grounds, as a private space for our family for the whole weekend and had a fun but relaxed wedding morning there with the hair and make-up girls. I’d found dress shopping quite stressful, never getting the feeling of finding ‘The One’ but I loved my simple, elegant gown. I adored the silhouette the dress gave me and the added drama of the long train, plus the cape we’d added later. It modernised a somewhat classic dress and elevated the whole look. Picking their brain about your big day is highly recommended and remember, there’s no such thing as a stupid question! • Whether you want a grand celebration or a minimalist get-together, most hotels can cater to your specific needs – you just need to discuss them. Perhaps a board on Pinterest can help you show your vision to the coordinator and ensure that your dream venue becomes even more magical? • Knowing your budget is important and while money isn’t the most exciting thing to talk about when wedding planning, it’s essential. Ensure you and your partner have a clear, agreed-upon limit in mind and don’t be afraid to share it with potential venues. www.simonesmithphotography.comwww.byrhea.co.uk

Castles
Grand and Regal
A true fairytale wedding wouldn’t be complete without a castle – or indeed a stately home if you’re more of a Bridgerton kind of couple! In the northeast, you’ll find a wonderful variety of grand and regal venues in which to tie the knot, with spaces to suit all sizes of wedding parties. Here are five reasons we love them…

1. The beautiful setting: At many castles and stately homes, you can host every part of your day in a different space within the venue and its grounds – and spend very little on decoration because it all speaks for itself! Say “I do” in a lavish drawing room, toast to your newlywed status with a garden party on the manicured lawn, dine like royalty in the grand banqueting hall and dance the night away in a beautiful Baronial ballroom under the most sparkly of chandeliers. Your guests won’t forget your wedding in a hurry!

2. The rich history: These wonderful buildings all come with a story or ten; living monuments to Scotland’s history. From the iconic architecture to the vivid interiors, soak up the unique story of your wedding venue.

3. There’s flexibility: Want to get married elsewhere before heading to your majestic castle or grand stately home to celebrate? Not a problem – many offer superb receptiononly packages. Got an extra-large wedding party? Hire a marquee to sit in a spectacular spot in the grounds and keep the inside of the venue as a special retreat for you and your bridal party. Effortlessly romantic, castles and stately homes are a truly remarkable setting for big, formal celebrations and cosy, intimate gatherings. 102 ♥ VENUES & MARQUEES
From providing cover at small and intimate back garden nuptials to acting as another ‘room’ for a large-scale celebration at an already-amazing northeast venue, marquees are incredibly versatile structures. If you’re going down that route, you’ll want to get in touch with one of the northeast’s excellent marquee suppliers – but first, do some background reading. Make sure to think about your food and drink options at this stage – if you have a caterer in mind, get them involved in a site visit early on.
Some venues allow you to erect a marquee on their lawn while still using the main building for your ceremony and accommodation, whilst others only let you use their land – but the buildings still offer a beautiful backdrop for newlywed photographs. Alternatively, you may wish to go ultra-personal and make use of your own gardens or land – just beware with this option that there’ll be a lot of comings and goings in the lead up to and the days following the wedding!
This is especially important if you’re going it alone, as opposed to on the land of a venue. Can suppliers and their vehicles get access? Is there a power source or will you need a generator? What about guest parking? Toilet facilities? Running water? Post-wedding waste disposal? Marquee experts will be able to advise you here and hiring a wedding coordinator could be well-worth the investment!
A marquee wedding is a great opportunity to unleash your creativity and really make your space unique.

VENUESwww.grampianweddingdirectory.co.ukANDMARQUEES ♥ 109
Long gone as the days of yellowing, buntingfilled marquees – you now have a plethora of styles to choose from! Stylish stretch tents are great for summer with their open sides (which can be pulled down if needed) creating light, airy spaces, and their high ceilings are perfect for wowing guests with floral hanging installations.
Boho-style wedding? You’ll want a tipi! With a thicker canvas, you’ll find these quirky structures have a darker and more intimate vibe and look incredible when accessorised with festoon lighting and candles. Why not go all out and order some bell tents as well, providing the ultimate festival-style accommodation for guests who’ve partied hard? At the other end of the scale, clear marquees will give you a modern, sophisticated orangery look – think pandemic-style domes on a really big scale!

Whatever style you go for, there’s nothing more important than getting the size right. Of course, your supplier will advise you but you can help them along with an accurate guest list before asking for a quote. They’ll then factor in space for dining, dancing and a bar, and anything else you need, like a space for reception drinks (handy for older guests) or extra entertainment.
How big does my marquee need to be?
How do I want to style it?
A marquee wedding is a great opportunity to unleash your creativity and really make your space unique. But remember that each decision you make will impact on cost – and you’ll have to make sure it works in practical terms, so think about your priorities. Do you want one big space or to have it divided with the dancefloor hidden until after dinner? Long trestle tables or traditional circular tables? What about lighting, flooring, décor and hanging points? Depending on your caterer, you’ll also want to factor in tableware, from crockery and cutlery to glassware and table linen. Don’t forget extras, like a coat rack and, if it’s likely to get cold into the evening, patio heaters and a fire pit! ♥

Whilst Veri Peri, a gorgeous, rich shade of purple, is Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2022, the experts predict that pink-purple Orchid Bloom, vibrant Super Sonic blue, fresh Fair Green, playful Bubblegum pink, vivid Coral Rose and cool Cascade blue will all be bang on styleyourSort

Making it personal This year, couples are really thinking about cake flavours, choosing something they really connect with as opposed to ‘just something from a menu’. It’s all about sharing special memories in cake form with your guests so think about something that takes you back to your childhood, reminds you of your first date or connects you to your favourite place.
Offering an experience Going above and beyond, some to-be-weds are forgoing the single cake in favour of a full flavour experience, from welcome baskets full of delicious (and meaningful – see above!) treats to creative and mouthwatering patisserie tables.

Cake top forward ‘Cake top forward’ may not be the most catchy of names but it does what it says on the tin. That means the top faces forward and it gives you a chic, modern, moon shape that looks oh-sosophisticated in photos. We love it – and your guests will too!

Deciding to get married was bittersweet – in October 2017 he found out he had skin cancer and, at home on the couch after a day of tears, he said that although he didn’t know how long he’d have, he wanted to be with me forevermore. Thankfully, though, Stephen has recovered well and had positive check-ups so forever should be a long time.
Like many couples, we had to cancel our wedding a couple of times due to the pandemic. When it came to third time lucky, we happened to have booked a stay at Glen Tanar’s Tower O’Ess (a wee holiday with our dogs) and realised they offered weddings on the estate. We decided there and then to book an intimate wedding, just 16 weeks away. The next priority was an amazing photographer to capture every moment. We wanted a very relaxed vibe, just a day about us finally getting married. So, we kept things simple with DIY rustic décor, lots of candles and dried flowers, and added a bit of timeless winter sparkle with our outfits. My look was all about vintage glamour – a 1920s-inspired fit-and-flare dress with lots of embellishments, and my bridesmaids followed suit in gowns adorned with sequins. We’d planned to stay in the lodges at Glen Tanar the night before our Wednesday wedding but as we headed to collect our registration forms (with a car full of booze, décor and dogs) on the Monday, we had a call to say there had been no power since Storm Arwen hit on Friday. Emotions were high and we had no idea what to do. Suddenly we didn’t know where we were going to stay… Or get married! We scoured Airbnb and found the amazing, dog-friendly Hillhead Hideaways in Keith. We unwound in the hot tub and tried to make a new plan, less than 48 hours before we were due to tie the knot. I didn’t care if the wedding was going to be outside in the snow, I just knew we weren’t cancelling a third time! Thankfully, on Tuesday afternoon Glen Tanar confirmed that although there was still no power,

they’d cleared some trees and had a small room where we could get married by candlelight. So, we zipped over to decorate while there was still Luckily, daylight.thewedding day was fantastic. Although it wasn’t what we’d planned (and we had to cancel our evening reception and caterer) I’d say it was better than we could have ever imagined. It was very personal, about us as a couple sharing a moment with our nearest and dearest. We had a humanist ceremony full of laughter and intimacy (there was hardly a dry eye in sight!) and afterwards, enjoyed nibbles from a local bakery, had a jig to the bagpipes and played with Unfortunately, sparklers.the

aftermath of the storm meant no meal, so we headed to The Boat Inn, Aboyne, for informal speeches over a farewell drink. We had an impromptu first dance to Glasgow City Police Pipers played by our best man Chris, which was just magical. And when we returned to the lodges with the bridal party, we had a wee dance to our original song, Love You ‘Till The End by The ReflectingPogues.onitall, we’d encourage other couples to try not to stress about the finer details. All that matters is you get married to the person you love and everything else will come together – it did for us!

Want the best of both worlds? See if your photographer can shoot in both formats –but remember film can be a little more costly than digital. First look shot A new-ish staple in the wedding photography world is capturing the momentous moment when the couple (or dad, or maids) see each other the first time on the big day, all dressed up. If you’re superstitious and want to wait for the ceremony, a second shooter (see further down) might be good but if not, meeting pre-aisle would be a lovely way to get this sincere moment captured for eternity.

Your guide to ‘tog jargon Recording a whole wedding day may seem daunting if you’re not already into snapping photos or shooting reels like a pro but don’t worry, if you’re not an avid paparazzo, we got you! Here are some of the key terms to familiarise yourself with as you begin the hunt for the perfect photographer and videographer… Digital or film? Pretty soon you’ll realise photographers talk about shooting in digital or with film. While digital is usually crisper in quality and quicker to get back for your viewing, photos on film will be softer and warmer in colour.
Photography and videography packages So, you’ve found someone you think will snap you and your partner in the best light? Amazing! Now, they’ll talk about packages (if they offer them – some suppliers prefer to work on an hourly rate).
Packages are offered on a sliding scale to give you all you need for your perfect day and can range from a full day of shooting (from getting ready to the first dance and more) to just the ‘essentials’ – ceremony, speeches and first dance, for example. Your package will also include how you want your glorious images edited and delivered to you – USB, digital or a glossy album? Every snapper has their own deals so make sure you get exactly what you want and need by doing plenty research before signing on the dotted line. www.byrhea.co.uk

Formal vs. candid Start talking styles and these words will be some of the first you hear – look out for reportage and documentary, too. In a nutshell, a more formal style will involve your photographer directing you to create posed shots, almost like something out of a glossy magazine. It’s a tried and tested method (favoured by the Royals when it comes to marriage time) and works well for capturing large groups of family or friends Ontogether.theother hand, you may barely notice your ‘tog if they’re shooting candid style! Here, the goal is to capture the day as it happens, almost like a fly on the wall documentary, with a firm focus on the authenticity, emotion and naturalness of the celebration. Think spontaneous shots of you and your guests laughing, crying and everything in between. Afterwards, it’s a great opportunity to see special moments you may have missed out on when otherwise occupied on the big day!

1. Splendid speeches and more Lots of thought will have been put into the speeches on your big day – how special would it be to be able to watch them time and time again, and share them with generations to Whilstcome?candid photos are great here (the best man’s pride as he reels off the funniest story, as well as catching the guests’ reactions), only video will really let you relive the performances in all their glory. This could be particularly handy, too, if you find your attention isn’t 100% on the words during the day – there’ll be so much else buzzing through your brain, after all!
Second shooter Now an option with many photography and videography packages, a talented second shooter will ensure you don’t miss a moment of the action – they’re there to capture the heart-warming reactions to all the events happening on ‘main Whetherstage’.it’s mummy dearest wiping a happy tear away while you say your vows or getting the fun-filled groomsmen’s prep on film, a second lens will take care of any angles the main ‘tog can’t – and provide lots of fun extra shots you might not be able to get otherwise! Shot list This is the list of your musthave photographs – and something your photographer/ filmmaker will thank you for! As the big day approaches, think of what you really want captured – maybe it’s the fundamentals like the groom waiting at the altar or cutting the cake the cake together, or something a bit more specific like a shot of two long-lost relatives together. Either way, this list is a good way to make sure you know you’ll get the photos you’ve always wanted. Make sure your list isn’t too long, though, otherwise your supplier won’t have the creative freedom that’s essential for snapping candid moments. Often these are the ones you’ll love the most! Why you need a videographer
www.daniellelesliephotography.comwww.clarkejossphotography.co.uk
A picture is worth a thousand words… But what if your photos could move and talk? Although we know this can happen (it’s the 21st century after all) videography is often sadly overlooked when couples are deciding on how to document their big day. Taking a cue from Hollywood, here are three reasons why you should get your wedding captured for the silver screen…

2. Missed in action Regardless of how much we can wish and hope, being everywhere at once is impossible. But that doesn’t have to mean you miss out on all the fun or beautiful parts of your wedding. Getting a videographer to film your guests being welcomed, for example, will give you a glimpse of the excitement and love that mounted ahead of the nuptials.
Evidently, using more than just one of your senses when looking back on your happy day will truly put you back in the picture, over and over again.
Consider your ceremony and first dance as well. On the day you’ll be immersed but obviously won’t actually see them – imagine getting to watch these once-in-a-lifetime moments as an outsider after its all over?

www.grampianweddingdirectory.co.ukPHOTOGRAPHY ♥ 153 Other moments you might miss, especially if your guestlist is long, is hearing all the well-wishes. How about asking your filmmaker to put together a video guest book – the perfect positivity boost for the future and an opportunity for your guests to record some kind words or marriage advice they might not get round to sharing on the big day. Happy tears pending…! 3. Creatively cinematic Depending on your videographer, there could be some great options for turning your wedding video into a full-blown blockbuster! Ask about cinematic editing styles, options for soundtracks and anything else you can do to really personalise the Checkfilm.what’s included in different packages (will your videographer offer a drone shot of your spectacular venue to really set the scene?) and choose your favourite.
