Type : Project of Sandhy Sihotang, IAI
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Pniel Church, more well-known as “Gereja Ayam”, is one of the prominent historical churches in Jakarta. Located near Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta, this church is the only Neo-Romanic church in Jakarta. Therefore, this church becomes one of the cultural significances in the Pasar Baru area. In 2022, the revitalization project of this church was aimed until the basic engineering stage. The outcome of this stage shall be the basic to be developed for the DED stage which was planned to be conducted in the future.
In this project, contributed as a junior architectural designer. My participation in this project includes conducting initial research about the revitalization method of the landscape and the new buildings within the church complex as well as proposing a design for the landscape and the supporting buildings. also made 3D models, CAD drawings, and report documents.
MAIN ISSUES DESIGN CONCEPT
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
This church is a part of cultural significances in Pasar Baru as the only Neo Romanic church in Jakarta. Not only the main church building, the landscape around the church building is also part of cultural significances.
FULFILLING PEOPLE NEEDS
There are needs of new rooms to accommodate church community activities.
VISIBILITY TO THE MAIN CHURCH
People who come from the east side of the church (from H. Samanhudi Street) cannot see church clearly due to the position of additional building.
DRAINAGE SYSTEM & FLOOD
Damaging flood once happened in the past and it affected the condition of church main building.
CHURCH AS RELIGIOUS TOURISM SPOT
Future revitalization plan of Pniel Church aims to develop this religious complex to be a good-quality tourism spot. Current supporting facilities in Pniel Church need to be upgraded.
DESIGN APPROACH
| LANDSCAPE CONCEPT
Symmetricality & Circular Shape Application based on church architectural characteristic.
Revive the original landscape characteristic referring to historical pictures.
RESEARCH MATERIALS
Based on Pusat Dokumentasi Arsitektur’s research, the significances can be seen from the diagram on the side. Church main buildng dan shape of landscape as prime cultural significances
New supporting buildings (built in 2002 -2004)
New canopy (intrusive elements)
In conclusion, new supporting buildings should be able to be reconstructed since it is not a part of prime cultural significances. On the other hand, the landscape layouting shall be proposed to be redesigned referring to its initial layout (as can be seen from the historical picture).
Zoning of private and public area including an attempt to create friendlier landscape for pedestrian.

Distinguishable and simple facade of supporting buildings
Renovate the supporting buildings on this side so that it will appear symmetrical
SUPPORTING BUILDINGS AS THE CHURCH BACKGROUND
Two supporting buildings which are located around the church shall act as the church background. Therefore, the facade of the building shall show the different character compared to the main church so it will be easier to differentiate the additional buildings and the church. This concept is based on Burra Charter point.
EMPHASIZE THE SYMMETRY CONCEPT
Two supporting buildings which are located around the church shall emphasize the symmetry concept. The length of two sides shall be similiar to each other.
EMPHASIZE THE VIEW TO CHURCH BY REDESIGNING BUILDING MASS
The view to Pniel Church from H. Samanhudi street is intruded by the existing building. To respond that condition, existing building which is located near H. Samanhudi street shall be redesigned by subtracting the mass.
ADD NEW FUNCTION TO SUPPORT CHURCH AS TOURISM DESTINATION
In order to develop Pniel Church as a historical tourism destination, new function such as gallery will be added into the supporting building. As can be seen from the pictures on the left, the gallery shall be placed near the entrance. This gallery will act as a visitor center as well.
SUPPORTING BUILDING A | GROUND FLOOR
PRECAUTION TO PREVENT FLOOD
Since the flood that had happened in the past was harmful to church’s physical condition, it is important to prevent flooding from outside the site coming in. New design of fence was proposed so it will be able to prevent flooding for coming in. Hydraulic flood barrier shall be placed near the gate.
Circulation of visitor Sump pump system
Other proposal to prevent flood coming in is developing sump pump system near the connection of church site and city drainage system.
Adding more green areas to act as rainwater catchment.
FULFILLING CHURCH’S NEEDS by adding functional rooms as requested. The supporting buildings are proposed to be two floors buildings.

Revitalization Project
REVITALIZATION OF IMMANUEL CHURCH
Gambir, DKI Jakarta
Team Leader : Sandhy Sihotang, IAI
Type : Project of Bagan Desain
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The firm work at was assigned to revitalize Immanuel Church, one of the oldest historical buildings in Jakarta. Collaborating with HAP and Netap Studio, Bagan and the team attempted to bring back the original character of the landscape based on research, while revitalizing the church building to its prime condition. In this project, Bagan Desain was assigned to revitalize the outdoor area, including renovating supporting facilities such as the guard house, toilet, MEP house, and office corridor. Masterplan and landscape main concept were designed by Bagan Desain while hardscape and softscape of landscape design were designed by Netap Studio. contributed as a junior architectural designer and junior project coordinator to this project. As we revitalized a heritage building, historical research needed to be done before Bagan proposed the masterplan design. participated in composing that research and conceptual document. Besides, also helped out in making 3D models and CAD drawings. As junior project coordinator, assisted my principal coordinator to coordinate with external parties, such as Dinas Bina Marga, etc.
Site Area 18.008 m2
GFA : 340 m2
MAIN
ISSUES USER CENTERED
The existing condition of the Immanuel Church landscape was still too oriented to vehicles.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT CHURCH AS RELIGIOUS TOURISM SPOT
As a heritage building complex, the landscape area did not show its original landscape design.
Referring to DKI Jakarta’s revitalization plan of religious tourism spots, the Immanuel Church landscape area shall be developed. The existing landscape condition needed much improvement.
DESIGN CONCEPT
CONVERTING VEHICLE-ORIENTED HERITAGE BUILDING COMPLEX TO PEOPLE-ORIENTED RELIGIOUS TOURISM SPOT
DESIGN APPROACH
EMPHASIZE CIRCULAR ELEMENT
To emphasize the circular pattern on landscape design based on the church’s main building. The circular pattern that was going to be applied on the landscape area near Medan Merdeka Timur Street refers to a historical picture from the year 1940 (picture 1.1)
CHURCH AS THE FOCAL POINT
As the focal point, the main building shall be the center of four axes. At each axis, a node was placed facing the church to respect the main building. This kind of design approach has been done since the neoclassical era, which put the focal point in the middle of the axes.
DEFINE ZONE
Public - Pedestrian and transit area 1
DESIGN APPROACH FOR VISUAL
Apply pedestrian friendly hardscape materials to replace asphalt.
Apply grassblock as the ground cover to replace ashplat at parking area.
Place more pedestrian friendly outdoor furnitures within the church area.
1 2 Public - drop off point, tourist information center, toilet 1 3
Semi Public - church community activity area (wedding ceremony, gathering, etc) and playground
Public - culinary center and parking area 1
IMPORTANT NODES ALONG AXIS
1 Sitting area
2 Park, ceremonial spot, and playground area
3 Sitting area
4 Information center and office
Based on historical research on picture above, nodes were placed at the end of axis to emphasize the imaginary line. In this project, important nodes were designed so people will be able to look at the church while sitting or doing activities.
VISIBILITY FROM ENTRANCE
Not only the main building, smaller buildings within Immanuel Church area are also have unique characteristic, one of them are pastor’s house. We proposed to show an important part of the buildings from the entrance area by designing a second opening around the existing entrance. Therefore, people who will pass by the street can see there are also historical buildings beside the main church building.
CURRENT CONDITION
Revitalization Project
REVITALIZATION OF JAMI’ AL MANSUR MOSQUE
Tambora, DKI Jakarta
Team Leader : Sandhy Sihotang, IAI
Type : Project of Bagan Desain
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Located in Tambora, West Jakarta, Jami’ Al Mansur Mosque is one of the heritage mosques in Jakarta. A historical event that happened at the mosque before Indonesia declared its independence made this mosque an important part of Indonesia’s history.
The firm I work at was assigned to revitalize this mosque by Dinas Kebudayaan DKI Jakarta. Collaborating with Netap Studio, Bagan Desain proposed a new revitalization plan and design for this mosque along with its landscape design.
contributed as an architectural assistant and junior project coordinator for this project. participated in composing the historical research and conceptual document. also helped out in making 3D models and CAD drawings for the concept stage. As a junior project coordinator, became an assistant to my principal coordinator.
MAIN ISSUES SYMBOLIC HERITAGE ELEMENTS
Important heritage elements such as Soko Guru sacred graves of the mosque religious figures, and others were hidden behind the additional part of mosque. Not only that, the existing tower structure needed to be paid attention too.
DESIGN CONCEPT
MOSQUE AS RELIGIOUS TOURISM SPOT
As a part of religious tourism revitalization program, Jami’ Al Mansur Mosque facilities shall be developed to meet a certain standard. New programs were proposed to be added to, including museum, multipurpose room, library and classroom.
COMMUNITY MOSQUE DEVELOPMENT
Surrounded by residential area, this mosque has been a place where people gather not only to pray but also to meet each other and share religious knowledge. The mosque has become a community place within the neighborhood. It has become a part of local community. Therefore, future revitalization design shall accommodate the mosque function as community place.
Heritage Building Values
MASJID JAMI’ AL MANSUR: HERITAGE COMMUNITY MOSQUE AS A RELIGIOUS TOURISM SPOT
Propose to strengthen Jami’ Al Mansur Mosque’s potentials a community mosque while preserving its heritage elements.
Habluminannas and Habluminallah Values
DESIGN APPROACH
HERITAGE BUILDING VALUES
To revitalize Jami’ Al Mansur Mosque, Bagan attempted to emphasize the heritage building’s values that the mosque already had, such as aesthetics and symbolism. The mosque has been rich with architectural elements from various cultures, including Javanese, Chinese, Betawi, and even Middle East. Each of the elements is shown below. A (Javanese); b (Middle East); c (Chinese); and d (Betawi).
HABLUMINANNAS & HABLUMINALLAH VALUES
As a community mosque, Jami’ Al Mansur Mosque shall be designed to accommodate not only praying activity, but also social activity as supported by classroom, multipurpose room, and open plaza. The relationship between human and human (habluminannas) will always be nurtured as well as the relationship between Allah and human (habluminallah).
DESIGN APPROACH OPEN PLAZA
Based on the statement from the mosque committee board, the area beside the middle part where Soko Guru is located was the new part of the building. Therefore, the place work proposed to replace that area with an open plaza so that the main roof (tumpang tiga roof) would be more visible.
SOKO GURU
Based on the statement from the mosque committee board, the scale of the Soko Guru area was taller dan grander back in the past. This revitalization shall bring back the grandeur of Soko Guru by digging up the soil back to its original level.
ENTRANCE CONCEPT
Referring to the literature study, the mosque has a very similar typology to a traditional mosque from Central Java. The place work proposed to relive the entrance from the East side of Jami’ Al Mansur Mosque just like the mosques in the Central Java area. A new entrance shall also be located on the north side of the site to accommodate residents near the mosque.
SECOND FLOOR TO ACCOMMODATE NEW PROGRAMS
Since new programs shall need new spaces, the building part beside the main mosque building (Soko Guru area) was designed to be a two-leveled building. New programs such as multipurpose room, museum, classes, library, and committee room shall be placed on the second floor.
SACRED GRAVEYARD (MAQOM)
The revitalization plan proposed to emphasize the position of the sacred graveyard by making the graveyard area more open and designing an accessible pathway from the main street.
CONCEPT OF MOSQUE LEVEL
Based on the local community’s experience, the flood happened in that area during when the rainy season. To prevent a flood from coming into the mosque area again, an outdoor plaza with a higher level than before was designed around the mosque, as can be seen from the section.
Besides the outdoor plaza, an important leveling concept is the Soko Guru floor level. To bring back its greatness, the floor under Soko Guru was proposed to be dug up to its initial level.
RESPECT THE HERITAGE ELEMENTS
that made in this project
SPACE AROUND THE HERITAGE ELEMENT
We proposed to make space around the main heritage roof to make the main building easier to “breathe”. This act will also highlight the main heritage building value by separating it a little from the additional building parts.
NEW BUILDING AS BACKGROUND
The new building that will surround the tumpang tiga roof was designed to be a background. Consequently, the facade of the new building which can be seen from the main street will only consist of simple geometry.
EMPHASIZE THE HISTORICAL ELEMENTS
The revitalization plan proposed to emphasize main elements, such as the tumpang tiga roof, sacred graveyard, and the existing tower, by making them more visible from the main road. The use of glass as railing material was also part of the plan to make the graveyard area visible.
Historical elements such as doors and windows shall be kept and used for the new design. Some doors and windows that were already broken shall be remade exactly the same as the old ones.

SOLO BARU MIXED USE
Solo Baru, Central Java
Team Leader : Sandhy Sihotang, IAI
Type : Project of Bagan Desain
PROJECT OVERVIEW
MAIN DESIGN CRITERIA
Alternative 1 Alternative 2
DESIGN CONCEPT
My workplace was assigned to plan and design a mixeduse development in Solo Baru on a 11825.16 sqm site. This mixed-use will support various functions, such as a condotel, office, and shopping center. However, for this project, we had to work on two alternative concepts first.
In this project, mostly participated in designing the landscape and outdoor area, as well as making the 3D model. contributed to composing the conceptual proposal including making the diagrams, doing the research, etc.
TOWERS
5 towers referring to client’s request
FUNCTION
Condotel 3 towers
Office 2 towers

20 floors for towers
TOWERS
2 towers referring to client’s request
FUNCTION
Condotel 2 towers
Shopping mall Convention Center
FLOORS
4 floors for podium
27 floors for towers
DESIGN APPROACH
What did we do to solve the main issues?
Alternative 1
• To research what are plus points that can strengthen the mixed-use presence amongst the existing competitors.
This option should accommodate three main programs. To create a unique mixed-use complex, the place work needed to do the competitors analysis first. After we did research, we decided to develop the mixed-use concept as a new landmark that represented four words: GREEN, LIVELY, CONNECTED, and ICONIC.
• To divide the site based on the first phase and second phase development.
• To study the future development of commercial junction around mixed-use area.
A study of the existing nodes around the site was needed to understand the local context of this area. Based on this study, we learned that the area near Air Mancur Pandawa had the potential to be developed as a commercial area since there were already economic activities, whether formal or informal activities.
We proposed to develop an area around Air Mancur Pandawa as a new commercial junction in Solo Baru. In the future, the mixed-use complex will be connected with an existing hotel, an existing supermarket, and a new function for future development.
DESIGN CONCEPT
Alternative 1
Phasing Plan
We proposed a phasing plan to accommodate the client’s needs. A phasing plan was made referring to the existing site condition. There are still two existing buildings within the site area.
Zoning and Massing Study
Massing was studied based on the shape of the site. The massing on the corner should respond to the shape.
Condotel towers were placed like the twin towers if we see from the Air Mancur Pandawa.
GREEN BUILDING INITATIVE
SOLAR PANEL LOCATION
based on sun diagram
A Sun diagram study was needed to decide the position of the solar panel. We proposed the solar panels should be placed in the area with red marks.
PROVIDE PUBLIC GREEN AREA TO GENERATE A LIVELY MIXED-USE BUILDING
POCKET GARDEN on facade
We proposed to maximize the percentage of greenery in the building by adding pocket gardens on the façade. Natural lighting can also get through the pocket garden due to its transparent and open façade.
To design a new kind of mixed-use building in Solo Baru, we tried to develop public green areas that can attract people to come. Green areas were designed to be placed on the rooftop, near the entrance from Merak Street, and along Ir. Soekarno Street (in front of Hotel Brother). The location near Merak Street and Ir. Soekarno Street was decided based on existing informal street vendors’ activity.
CONCEPTUAL PLANS
Some conceptual plans attached here are the selected floors showing important functions. GF floor shows landscape design. The first floor shows the iconic bridge and commercial pods. The third and fourth floors show the connecting bridge to Hotel Brothers. The fifth floor shows a shopping area and a cinema. The Seventh and Eighth floors show the convention area and parking lot. The ninth floor shows an outdoor roof deck design. The typical floor shows the conceptual layout for the condotel and office.
Crediit: 3D renders for alternative 1 were rendered by outsource 3D artist
DESIGN CONCEPT
Alternative 2
TO DEVELOP AN ICONIC BUILDING WITHIN THE MIXED USED COMPLEX AS NEW LANDMARK IN SOLO BARU
Zoning Plan
Following the client’s request, we conducted the zoning study if the main entry was designed from Ir. Soekarno Street. The entry was placed there so the main facade of the entertainment center could be easily seen by residents around the site since most of the people’s circulation happened there.
There will be only two towers for this study since the office function was eliminated from the program. The podium under tower one shall be dedicated to the entertainment square while the podium under tower 2 shall be dedicated to the convention center. Two basements were designed to provide a parking area within the mixed-use complex.
This option should accommodate three main programs, which were condominium, hotel & ballroom, and entertainment square. Entertainment square was the main program contained in the shopping area, cinema, and outdoor public space. For this alternative study, the upcoming mixed-use was also aimed to represent four words: GREEN, LIVELY, CONNECTED, and ICONIC.
Massing Study
Entertainment Square
As the main face of the mixeduse complex from Ir. Soekarno Street, entertainment square entrance was designed to be the iconic part of the whole building. Shaped like irregular stepped blocks, we designed it to adopt the shape of a mountain since Central Java was famous for its mountains such as Merapi, Merbabu, etc.
Connectivity
Based on the diagram above, it can be seen that the ballroom area will be connected to the retail area and hotel so that people who intend to visit the ballroom can also leisurely walk from the hotel area or retail. Additionally, there will also be a specific lobby for ballroom visitors.
Sun Shading Study
Mixed-use complex needed to provide an outdoor roof deck area for condominium residents’ and hotel guests’ needs. To make sure the outdoor area on the roof deck is comfortable for users, we did a sun shading study. From the sun shading study, it was proven that the roof deck area was under the shadow of two towers.
Revitalization Project
RENOVATION OF EAST KALIMANTAN DPRD
GOVERNMENTAL BUILDING
Samarinda, East Kalimantan
Team Leader : Sandhy Sihotang, IAI
Type : Project of Bagan Desain
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Bagan was assigned to collaborate with a local architecture firm to renovate DPRD Samarinda Governmental Building. The existing building was used as a main meeting and convention hall. The roof itself is its main attraction therefore it will be Bagan’s main concern when renovating the building. In this project, I participated in designing the new interior of the governmental building, including the production stage such as making auto CAD drawings, composing 3D models, and creating the layout for the final presentation.
MAIN ISSUES
ROOF The existing building roof was not in good condition anymore. The ceiling was also damaged in some parts, showing the structure of the roof.
EXTENDED NEEDS
DESIGN CONCEPT
The existing building’s interior layout could not support extended needs such as a closed meeting room, well-designed waiting area, etc. The existing building also needed more entrance doors to solve guests’ circulation matter.s
• Propose to remove the existing ceiling board on the interior side. By doing that, the natural lighting will penetrate the roof into the main hall. In the future, the acoustic ceiling shall be placed accordingly with the skylight so that it will not prevent natural lighting from getting in.
• Propose to replace the existing roof material with the newer one.
MEP SYSTEM MEP system, such as rainwater pipes on the roof area, was not organized. Some of the pipes were also not in good condition.
PROBLEM SOLVING
APPROACH
1 Renovating the roof to create a better natural lighting and visualization from the meeting hall
2 3
Redesign the interior layout to meet the client’s needs and to increase the building’s value from its appearance.
• Propose to replace the existing structure with a newer one based on the picture on the right.
• Redesign the lamp position.
• Propose to add more entrance doors to the main hall.
• Propose to add specific entrance doors for meeting participants that will go straight to the waiting room.
• Separate outdoor area on the second floor with indoor area with a vestibule
Redesign the MEP System collaborating with local MEP consultant.
Interior Element Inspiration
The existing building had a unique roofing shape that resembled a triangle. The triangle shape can be extracted from Borneo’s local cultural icon, Talawang, or a shield that can be seen in the picture on the left. Therefore, triangle shapes were applied to the interior design as an ornament.
Design Competition
RENOVATION OF GODEAN TRADITIONAL MARKET
Sleman, DIY
Team Leader : Sandhy Sihotang, IAI
Type : Design competition held by IAI
Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY)
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Godean Market is a traditional market that is located in Sleman, DIY. This market is famous for its eel culinary as a souvenir. In this competition, my team was expected to strengthen the market’s values as a traditional market, as well as its potential as a tourist destination. participated in the designing process, including developing concepts, composing architectural diagrams, and making 3D models.
Site area: 11261 m2
Floor: 3
MAIN ISSUES
In this project, firstly we defined what were important issues and needs of Godean Traditional Market:
ZONING SEQUENCE
DESIGN CONCEPT MAPEKEN
To re-design the interior layout into a more organized layout. In order to achieve that, defining the zones based on selling items and the main function is an important thing to do.
Sequence and circulation inside the market shall be reorganized so that way-finding will be easier for market visitors.
CULTURE
Godean Market is aimed to be a tourism center in the future. The design of the new building shall represent the local culture of Central Java. It is also proposed to be a new icon for Sleman.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTION
The existing building still does not provide the space for new proposed functions such as communal space, sports center, food courts, etc. To support future Godean Market as a tourism center, new attractive functions shall be developed.
DESIGN APPROACH
Market means peken in Javanese languange. Mapeken also means “to gather”.
Future Godean Traditional Market is expected to be an organized market while at the same time an attractive and iconic tourism center in Sleman, DIY. In other words, my team proposed that Godean Traditional Market will be a good public place for people to gather and do various activities, not only a place to buy their needs.
Strengthen its Values
Celebrate Sleman’s identity
Accentuate Roofing System (Pernaungan)
Clarify the merchant’s zone by creating a more proper and cleaner market without reducing the market’s values (guyub, unique, prasojo value)
Emphasize Sleman’s identity, Sinom Parijotho Salak on the design.
Celebrate the roof as an important element of the building. Javanese architecture deeply appreciates the existence of the roof as the building’s crown.
GODEAN MARKET ELEVATION
Future Godean Market shall present 4 faces (facades) since it is located in a lively area where residential and commercial areas coexist.
DESIGN APPROACH
ZONING
Defining clear zoning in the building is the first thing to do to create an organized space.
ACCESS AND CIRCULATION
Design a building with inclusive accessibility for all people by using the ramp.
COMMUNAL SPACE
Communal spaces are placed in the building to initiate the market as a new center of community in Sleman.
SUN DIAGRAM
Ensuring thermal comfort within the market area is important.
GODEAN MARKET SECTION
A ramp was designed to be the main vertical circulation of the future Godean Market. Hopefully, it will be able to create a new and different experience for visitors.
THE THIRD GATE OF GODEAN MARKET
This gate shall be the entry from the back side of the market, specifically to accommodate the local community around Godean Market.
LOADING/ UNLOADING AND SERVICE AREA
KIOSK MODULE
The design for one kiosk module can be seen from the pictures on the left side. Organized kiosks shall be separated by a 2 m alley to create a more comfortable space within the market.
THE MAIN FEATURE OF THE GODEAN MARKET
As the first corner that people coming to Yogyakarta would see, this area was designed to be the main feature and the top of the Godean Market skyline. The multipurpose room shall be located at that building part, therefore the highest skyline will be a good distinguishing feature that will indicate its position.
ROOF TOP AS COMMUNAL SPACE
New sports facilities and communal public space were proposed to be placed on the Godean Market rooftop. It was designed to initiate social activities at the market so that in the future Godean Market shall be a community place, not only a market, within the area of Sleman.
SECONDARY FEATURE AREA
This corner shall be the first to be seen by people coming from Yogyakarta. Therefore, this area was designed to be visible so that people could see local specialties like eel being sold. At the upper level, an amphitheater shall be placed to accommodate the area as a communal place for visitors.
SECOND ENTRANCE FOR RESIDENTIAL AREA
As a traditional market located near a residential area, an entrance shall also respond to the area where most houses were built. For that reason, the second entrance of Godean Market was designed to be welcoming to residents, by providing a public place first as a transition place into the market and a staircase that will go straight to the 2nd floor.

REDESIGN BUNDARAN HI
INFRASTRUCTURE
Central Jakarta, DKI Jakarta
Team Leader : Sandhy Sihotang, IAI
Type : Design competition held by Sarana Jaya
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Bundaran HI has been representing Jakarta’s iconic places along with Monas and other historical monuments. After the MRT Jakarta construction finished, the area around Bundaran HI are mostly packed with people since it became easier to access the area by public transportation. Bundaran HI area has the potential to be developed as a more accessible and welcoming public space. Therefore, this design competition was held by Sarana Jaya to revitalize the Bundaran HI area.
In this project, was part of a team that consisted of four persons. took part as an architectural assistant who helped in developing the architectural concept, making 3D visualizations, and making conceptual diagrams for the presentation board.
MAIN ISSUES
HISTORICAL ACCESSIBILITY
DESIGN CONCEPT
Based on historical research, in 1950 road to Tanah Abang was not designed to be the main corridor as the other 4 roads were. This can be seen from the historical map presented below. As for now, the Kebon Kacang Street is one of the most important accesses to Tanah Abang, so this matter shall be one of the issues to think of.
BUNDARAN HI AS THE MAIN VISTA OF THE FIVE CORRIDORS
KEBON KACANG STREET as THE FIFTH CORRIDOR
Existing Kebon Kacang Street shall be revitalized so it can represent the fifth corridor with a better quality pedestrian like the 1st - 4th corridors.
VISUAL
The Bundaran HI’s main attraction, the water fountain, can only be seen from afar unless when tthe car-free day. Accessibility to experience the water fountain has not been anticipated enough.
The current Bundaran HI area, the main axis roads, and Kebon Kacang road to Tanah Abang, all of them do not have the same visual element. The organized pedestrian and road terminate at Thamrin City Kebon Kacang entrance.
BUNDARAN HI as THE MAIN VISTA
Bundaran HI water fountain is the main attraction of this area. New tunnels as access to the water fountain shall be proposed to connect the fountain and its surrounding. Not only that, public furnitures shall be placed around the Bundaran HI water fountain.
Pedestrian movement study
We did a simulation of pedestrian movement study based of the existing pedestrian condition.
NORTH AND SOUTH AXIS as FIRST AND SECOND CORRIDOR
This street becomes important axis, connecting North part and South part of Jakarta.
GRISSEWEG/MADOERA-WEG as SECOND CORRIDOR
This street was named Grisseweg/ Madoera-weg, it represented as an important axis in Batavia that time.
NASSAU BOULEVARD as THIRD CORRIDOR
This street was part of West-East corridor, part of Niewu Gondangdia development back then.
Underground tunnel entrance
After we did the pedestrian movement study, we determined the tunnel entrances position.
Public space platform
We proposed to build a public space platform near the water fountain to initiate human activity.
BUNDARAN HI as PUBLIC SPACE
We proposed to dig the ground around the Bundaran HI fountain as well as build tunnels from 4 different directions that would go straight to Bundaran HI. Underground tunnels shall be able to minimize visual distraction as much as possible so that Bundaran HI fountain shall be the main vista. The public platform (picture on the left) and underground pathway (picture below) were also designed so people could enjoy the view of the Bundaran HI fountain from a new point of view.
NEW PERSPECTIVE OF BUNDARAN HI
People on the platform and underground area would experience a new perspective towards Bundaran HI.
1 a UNDERGROUND TUNNEL SECTION
The tunnel shall connect the main fountain area with existing pedestrian way beside the main road. Along the tunnels’ wall, some information boards and artworks shall be placed.
BUNDARAN HI AS SEEN FROM ABOVE
To emphasize Bundaran HI as the main vista from above, we also designed the pattern of the road around the water fountain. The pattern was inspired by DKI Jakarta’s gigi balang pattern then we modified it to a new form.
1 PLATFORM AREA SECTION
The platform area was designed to be a relaxation and recreation space. The shape shall encourage people to relax. It was also designed to be shadowed by a canopy structure.
b KEBON KACANG STREET VISUAL ZONE B (RIVERSIDE)
The riverside area along Kebon Kacang shall be redesigned as an organized public place. We proposed to continue the street pattern from zone B to zone A but make it simpler so the shape of the riverside platform would stand out. The vehicle way pattern shall blend with the pedestrian pathway by using the same hardscape materials.
b Pattern 1
KEBON KACANG STRET VISUAL ZONE A
Pedestrian quality on Kebon Kacang Street should be as good as pedestrian quality on M.H Thamrin Street and around Bundaran HI Fountain. Therefore, the design pattern on Kebon Kacang street shall continue the pattern of the street around Bundaran HI to create the same visualization of urban space. Not only that, pedestrian comfortability also should be prioritized, so we proposed for the pedestrian’s way to being wider. We also proposed to place a canopy in some parts so that people can use the shadow under it to rest.
Riverside platform Pattern 2
Pedestrian pathway 2.4 m
Pattern 3
Pedestrian pathway 1.8 m
