FROM THE
WOMEN power AS A FEMALE GROWING UP IN THE “I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAR” 70S,
I know I’m not supposed to admit this, but there are some things guys are just better at than I am. Solving math problems in their head and killing bugs are two that quickly come to mind. In fact, thanks to the hairier sex, I’ve learned a number of valuable lessons, such as how to check the pressure in my tires and how to throw a football. I know the best places to catch a bass on Lake Hickory; that if you’re going to mix your bourbon, any ol’ bourbon will do, but if you’re not, it won’t; and what “win, place, or show” means at the track.
Not all of my endeavors in the name of love have worked out all that well however, even though I like to think of myself as that “cool chick” who doesn’t act like an idiot in relationships. The reality, though, is that I’ve done some really idiotic things for men. I’ve gone 92 days without a carbohydrate for a man. I’ve waxed…umm…“numerous places” on my body for a man. I have pretended to like motorsports, snakes (Why couldn’t I have fallen for the guy with the poodle?), and mud runs— all for men. I’ve eaten squirrel for a man, become a vegetarian for a man, and swallowed a cigarette of a dubious nature for a man (Don’t ask). And though I’m certain “Jackass the Movie” is evidence that the collapse of Western civilization is imminent, I’ve even sat through the flick…more than once…for a man. This year, though, a man came into my life who, without expecting me to eat something I don’t want to or become interested in something I’m not interested in, has taught me the best lesson of all—that I am loveable just as I am. It doesn’t matter if I walk into a room all glammed up or wearing a baseball hat and no makeup, his response is to tell me I look beautiful. It doesn’t matter if my jeans fit perfectly that day or if I have to wear stretchy pants because I ate the entire tub of banana pudding the night before, he still pulls me close and whispers how much he loves me. He even loves me on those bad days when I’m certain I’m not smart enough or lucky enough or just not good enough in general by simply helping me to realize that I am. I know there will be times in our relationship when we each do things not because we really want to but because it makes the other happy. That’s ok, because that’s what good relationships are all about—not give and take, but give and give. And what I’ve also learned from this generous man is that when you willingly give all that you can to someone, that someone will naturally want to give all that they can right back. I know with certainty this is true because, heck, if he wanted me to, I’d even give up three more hours of my life to watch “Jack Ass 3D” with him. w

LIVE, LEARN,
Life takes practice! And though they don’t always come wrapped in a shiny red bow, the lessons we learn along the way are invaluable gifts that are worth sharing. Here are a few noteworthy examples featured in this issue:
THE PERFECT PARTNERSHIP
PASSION, HARD WORK, SUCCESS
An interest in dentistry and putting others first started quite young for both Dr. Brad Haines and Dr. Steven White, owners of White & Haines Advanced Dentistry in Cornelius (PAGE 32). They were inspired to pursue dentistry when they were just kids: “My father was a dentist,” Dr. White explains, “and for that reason I was drawn to the dental profession at an early age. As for Dr. Haines, he grew up down the street from his dentist and witnessed firsthand the life-changing benefits of dentistry.

Skip on over to PAGE 36 and see how Jack Salzman, co-owner of Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram / Carolina Custom Wheels Tires & Accessories, pursued his passions in life. While Jack is quick to credit his wife Robin and her leadership skills for the success of their business, he also humbly acknowledges his passion for winning, stating, “Whether it is in business or in my personal life, I enjoy putting in whatever effort is required to win and be successful.” A FAMILY TRADITION
Meet Brad Roche on PAGE 34 who, along with wife Angela, owns Element Funding in Davidson. Joining the family mortgage business is a timehonored tradition that began when Brad, dad to Bradley, 21, and Jacob, 20, went to work for his own father 28 years ago in Michigan. See how this tightknit family works and plays together and the invaluable lessons they’ve learned along the way.

Whether volunteering (which he does A LOT of!), advising clients, supporting his daughters in their endeavors, or spending some quality time boating on the lake with his wife, Joanna, Kent is a man on the move. There is always something more to accomplish but somehow he manages to make it all work together seamlessly. w
LKNW’S SALUTE TO MEN! Lake Norman Woman is not only celebrating the accomplishments of the 14 men featured in this month’s issue, we’re acknowledging ALL the outstanding men out there whose goodness often goes unrecognized.
so here’s to all the men … Who didn’t know if they’d make it to payday but they paid for dinner anyway … Who are trying their best to be a good man in a society that demands so much …
Who work long hours and leave their frustrations and worries at the door to be there for their kids because that’s what dads do …
Who love and give so much even when they feel they can’t …
Who lost their patience but kept their cool …
Who buy ice cream, wipe noses, bandage knees, and dry tears …
Who might need to hear “I’m proud of you!” because those words are important … Who shoulder the weight of the world for their family …
Who keep striving even if they think they’re failing …
Yes, here’s to them, the awesome men of our community. May we know them, may we love them, and may we appreciate them. Cheers.

8things A golf ball will travel further on hot days because the air is less dense so it takes less velocity to travel.
The French word “Cadet” means “youngest child” and is where the word “Caddy” comes from.
If you walk all 18 holes instead of riding in a golf cart, you would rack up nearly four miles on your pedometer.
Golf balls used to be made from leather and chicken (or goose) feathers. One ball could cost anywhere between $10 and $20. Some say it is called GOLF because all of the other four-letter words were taken!

Only 20 percent of golfers have a handicap below 18; a golfer with a handicap of 18 is called a “Bogey Golfer.”
Before the invention of the golf tee, golfers played off of sand piles they built themselves.

Keep tabs on your mental status. Think about several things: Are you drinking too much alcohol? Are you paying attention to signs of depression or bipolar symptoms (which are easily and often overlooked in men)? If you have a family history of mental illness, suicide, and/or substance abuse, you should talk to your doctor.
Eat, drink, and sleep with purpose. WebMd advises you focus on nutrients rather than calories and eat a variety of healthy foods … and don’t forget the 8x8 rule for water intake (8, 8oz glasses of water per day). Get at least seven hours of sleep. Men think they can overcome sleep deprivation by exercising or pushing on, regardless of what their body is telling them, but that serves no one … recuperative sleep is critical to good physical and mental health.
Yay for sex! When you’re stressed out, not sleeping well, or drinking too much alcohol, your sex life will suffer, and we all know the importance and fragility of the male libido. A healthy libido depends on a healthy lifestyle, and a healthy sex life is a crucial component of a man’s overall health and wellbeing. Prostate care is essential. The prostate grows as you get older, so you’ll almost certainly have symptoms at some point. A healthy, low-fat diet will reduce the likelihood of prostate growth and may reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Have a discussion with your doctor about your prostate health.
YOLO so have fun! Look forward to every day; do something different every day; do something for yourself every day … whether it’s taking a run or listening to an audiobook or practicing meditation, find your groove and live each day with purpose and gratitude. w FOR MORE INFORMATION ON MEN’S HEALTH, VISIT WWW.WEBMD.COM.

HEALTH HBOT promotes healing in the brain in many ways, but these are the most important:
BRAIN healing W H AT D O T R A U M AT I C B R A I N I N J U R Y (TBI), stroke, concussion, PTSD, and other neurological conditions have in common? They all involve wounds to the brain. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been shown to be effective in treating all wounds, including those to the brain.
HBOT is a medical treatment administered in a chamber in which the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen under pressure. This treatment produces up to a 15-fold increase in blood oxygen concentration causing oxygen to reach every cell in the body. This stimulates healing in all tissue, including the brain. It is an extremely safe, non-invasive, painless therapy. LKN EXPERT

All wounds to the brain cause inflammation and swelling. Since the skull does not expand, that pressure exerts itself on the very delicate tissue of the brain … hence cutting off the circulation and oxygen supply to the affected cells. If that condition lasts for more than a few hours, the cells become damaged. If it lasts for a few days, that damage becomes permanent. These wounds can be caused by trauma to the head as in the case of concussion, TBI, or PTSD. They can also be caused by systemic issues such as a blood clot lodging in an artery in the brain, as in the case of a stroke. In this instance, there is a core lesion whose cells will be dead and unsalvageable. However, there are many cells surrounding that lesion that are metabolically nonfunctioning. Those cells can be made functional with HBOT even years after the stroke. The function those cells provide can be brought back. Brain wounds can also be caused by inflammatory processes caused by infections of the brain and spinal cord as in the case of meningitis, or the body’s reaction to some vaccine injuries.
w OMAN.COM
L A KENORMAN
ANTIINFLAMMATORY— HBOT is a more potent antiinflammatory agent than steroids so it will reduce the swelling in the brain very quickly. This is especially important with acute brain injuries (injuries occurring within 10 days). OXYGENATION—HBOT oxygenates the tissue that has not been receiving sufficient oxygen due to the swelling and in the case of acute injuries, keeping it alive and preventing permanent damage. ANGIOGENESIS—HBOT causes the body to produce VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) and recruits stem cells to regenerate blood vessels (angiogenesis) to permanently supply new blood flow to the affected tissue. STEM CELLS—HBOT induces stem cell mobilization from their storage in the bone marrow to the blood stream by an 8-fold increase. It is important to emphasize that stem cells mobilized by HBOT hone in on tissues that have suffered damage and signal a need for regeneration. In addition to mobilization, HBOT induces the differentiation of stem cells to the different tissues such as heart, muscle, kidney, and brain. MITOCHONDRIA FUNCTION RESTORATION—The “cells powerhouse” is restored by HBOT. w

teens aloud! your teen, translated
RAISING
Below, are some tips that we can all use to help us get to know our teenage boy(s) better: Respect his space and give him his privacy while setting ground rules and outlining boundaries. If he doesn’t want to discuss an issue, let it be. Choose your battles. Assign responsibilities for him. Start out with simple chores at home that he would have done anyway and are pleasurable for him. Do not impose menial tasks on him. Get to know his friends … and their parents! The old adage of “you are who you hang out with” rings true.
TEENAGERS IN GENERAL ARE A CONUNDRUM—
whether boys or girls—and raising them is no easy feat by any stretch of the imagination. As a practicing pediatrician, I have found that teenage girls tend to be more expressive and open about their feelings when asked or approached. This is in stark contrast to their male peers who are often reserved about themselves and their emotions. As you read this, some of you may be thinking that I’m taking a traditional view of gender stereotypes, which may be true. However, whether we choose to admit it or not, society encourages girls to “emote” yet frowns upon boys when they do so. As a result, we find that most of our young men strive to live up to what people expect of them.
Be an example for him. This tip is mainly for dads, uncles, and grandfathers. They will model male adult family behaviors, especially when it comes to respecting women that are in their lives. Be aware of what you say and what you do at all times. Period. Believe in him and be his biggest fan and supporter. Avoid critiquing his appearance such as hair, clothing, etc. So what if he has long hair? As long as he is not hurting himself or someone else, let him go through his own growth process. Be aware of who he is as a young man; if he changes his attitude, choice of friends, who he hangs out with, or his grades start slipping, this could be a warning sign of self-destructive behaviors, and a doctor visit or counseling may be in order. Talk to him like an equal allowing him to express his opinion about his likes and dislikes. Above all, love, love, love him. Let him know that it is not “girly” to cry if he feels bad or sad. It takes a real man to express his emotions. w LKN EXPERT

Spray-Net offers homeowners in North Carolina a smarter way to paint homes, and it isn’t with a fancier brush. Through a patented process, Spray-Net has invented a way to renovate and paint the exterior of your home. Whether your home is clad with stucco, brick, or siding – or you want to update the look of your windows and doors, SprayNet can restore a factory-quality finish to your home’s exterior and make it look brand new.

Spray-Net was born out of the problem with traditional painting that many Lake Norman/ Charlotte homeowners know all too well. “The issue with painting homes in this area using traditional paint is that the paint doesn’t last very long after sitting through the long, hot summers and can quickly fade and expose the underlying surface to harsh elements,” says Spray-Net’s founder Carmelo Marsala. “Once these two things happen, other issues can affect the look of the home and can lead to unexpected renovation costs.” Through a combination of custom chemistry and a relentless focus, Marsala discovered a way to create more durable and longerlasting paint and process. In fact,
Spray-Net’s paint is so durable the company offers a 15-year warranty on peeling or chipping. This guarantee is transferable, a valueadded feature for anyone looking to sell their home. The best part is that SprayNet’s cost to paint your home is comparable to that of a professional painting company. Spray-Net manufacturers all its paint to ensure its high-quality standards are always met. "Using our proprietary line of industrial-strength coatings and patented application processes, we renew and transform existing surfaces that most people think can’t be painted but, instead, replaced," he said. “We are excited about helping homeowners throughout the entire Charlotte area find a highquality and cost-effective solution to transform and update their homes.” - Spray-Net’s founder Carmelo Marsala transform stucco, brick, aluminum and vinyl siding, front and garage doors, aluminum and vinyl windows, and even kitchen cabinets.
"In just one day, we deliver a permanent, factory finish that won’t peel and that looks just like new, not repainted," Marsala continued. "We’ve taken the process of factory painting and optimized it for application outside the controlled environment of the factory. By bringing factory results directly on-site, we give property owners a real alternative to replacement. The cost of our solution is immediately outweighed by the increase in curb appeal and overall property value. Unlike some renovations that don’t pay off, our renovation solution allows property owners to literally see a return on their investment." Spray-Net’s proprietary paint and service have caught the attention of many high-profile home renovation and interior design professionals. HGTV stars on “Property Brothers” have collaborated with Spray-Net to revamp homes. Also, HGTV star Sarah Richardson, has worked with Spray-Net to share SprayNet’s transformational benefits with homeowners. In fact, if you
visit Spray-Net’s website, you’ll find some specific advice from Sarah on color trends for 2021 and beyond. “We are excited about helping homeowners throughout the entire Charlotte area find a high-quality and cost-effective solution to transform and update their homes,” says Marsala. “While we offer a unique solution, customer service is our true passion. The smiles on our customers’ faces after they see their home for the first time is what drives and inspires us.” A local Lake Norman entrepreneur has partnered with Spray-Net to open the greater Charlotte location. And Dr. Charles Roberts ought to know … he hears it all day long at his practice, Roberts Pediatric Dentistry in Mooresville, and he couldn’t be happier about it! “My mom taught Kindergarten,” Dr. Roberts says, “and I always enjoyed interacting with her students. I knew I wanted to do something in dentistry, so during college I realized that pediatric dentistry would be a perfect fit for me. Where else can you wear clothes as comfortable as PJ’s and entertain kids all day? To me, kids and teeth are special gifts, and I am the guy who knew early on that I wanted to be a pediatric dentist … I am so grateful.” Dr. Roberts grew up in Hendersonville and attended NC State University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in zoology. He went on to attend the University of North Carolina Dental School at Chapel Hill where he met his classmate, now wife, Kari, who is also a dentist. After a two-year stint in Houston for his pediatric dental residency, Dr. Roberts returned to North Carolina and settled in Mooresville where he and Kari opened their dental office in 2001.

“We both wanted to live in North Carolina,” Dr. Roberts continues, “and Kari is from the land of 10,000 lakes (Minnesota), so we felt a desire to live on Lake Norman; this made moving to Mooresville an easy choice. We lived in Mooresville for 14 years until we moved to Cornelius to get closer to the girls’ school. We have three girls: Ansley, 16, and twins Myla and Langley, 14.” With a grateful attitude clearly evidenced by his smile, Dr. Roberts adds: “I take my challenges both big and small to God … Philippians 4:13 — I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I had a stroke in 2008, and I was fortunate that I suffered no permanent negative health effects, but due to this health event, we changed our schedules to balance work and family in a healthier manner. It was truly a life-changing event for our family, but it strengthened us.” We are so very blessed to be celebrating our 20th year of being in business this summer, and having Kari as my life partner and business partner is simply the best! We had to learn how to balance work/home in the early years, but we were given some great advice that really resonated with us: When you get home from your day of work, take your work hat off and hang it on a tree outside. It really helped us separate work and home life. I try to keep my focus on loving God and loving people … If I can do those two things in my life, I think it covers about everything.” w

t’s been said that if you need a job well done, ask the busiest person you know to do it. And although that may not be a consciously constructed mantra for North Carolina native Kent Pike, it certainly is applicable! Whether volunteering, advising clients, supporting his daughters, Abby and Taylor, in their golf and cross country pursuits, or spending some quality time boating on the lake with his wife, Joanna, Kent is a man on the move. There is always something more to accomplish but somehow Kent manages to make it all work together seamlessly. “Being active in the community is important to me and to my family,” Kent explains. “Giving back is something that we do together as a family, on a monthly basis.” As the immediate past president of Huntersville Happy Hour Rotary Club, Kent has been involved in numerous community outreach programs and events, from a “feed the kids” campaign to clothing drives to joining with others for

When not volunteering, Kent and his family enjoy an active lifestyle, traveling and experiencing new places and adventures. “We do not stay home much,” Kent says. “We are always doing something! We love to travel, and we have a lot of making up to do this year. So far this year we have been to St. Lucia and experienced being stranded due to an actual volcanic eruption on the neighboring island. And right now as you are reading this, I have probably just returned from Croatia. The world is a fascinating place! Culture and heritage are important to our family, and learning from others around the world brings us all a little closer together.” With so many responsibilities and activities on his calendar, how does Kent manage to maintain worklife balance? Kent does not hesitate to explain that a positive attitude plus a commitment to community and family means both success and life balance. “I run a small business,” Kent elaborates, “and one of the best compliments I received was when a peer introduced me to others with: ‘No one does a better job of work-life balance than Kent Pike.’ I have achieved a lot in life, but that would not be possible without a supportive family … I count my blessings daily.” w

nlike the celebrated poet Robert Frost, Kevin Cassidy of Ninja Nation doesn’t give much thought to the road not taken. That’s because instead of playing it safe, his life philosophy has been more along the lines of, “Go big or go home.” That go-big attitude led to a varied and always fascinating career path for Kevin. Born in New York, Kevin’s family moved to Charlotte when he was just 10. He graduated from Providence Senior High and then played baseball while attending Lenoir Rhyne University in Hickory. After college, he enjoyed a stint as a minor league baseball player, followed by a move to Baltimore to teach middle school. While living in Maryland, Kevin went to a Slamball tryout in Philadelphia and that would lead to a move to Los Angeles to play what he refers to as “that crazy sport.” But Kevin would do more than play Slamball in the City of Angels. Not only did he meet his lovely wife Megan while in California, but “go-big-orgo-home” Kevin branched out and learned how to drive fast cars, do fight scenes, ride horses, fall off buildings, and be lit on fire … “you know, normal Hollywood stuff,” Kevin quips. California dreamin’ brought Kevin a 17-year career as a Hollywood stuntman with a string of movie credits to his name including The Longest Yard, The Other Guys, SALT, Ant-Man, SpidermanHomecoming and Far From Home, Black Panther, and The Avengers, among many others. “I’m so glad I didn’t listen to the many people in my life who told me to play it safe,” Kevin smiles. “I trusted my gut and knew that if the rubber ever hit the road (which it did more than a few times), that I had the capability to make it work one way or another. So far in my life I can’t think of something I regret not doing…a few things I regret doing but those are easily dismissed with where those mistakes ultimately led me to in life.”
WRITER LESLIE OGLE
Kevin’s passion, though, has always revolved around helping children, and he knew when the Hollywood ride was over he would open his own business—one that was centered on building children up through sports. “I was introduced to Ninja Nation,” Kevin says, “as I was planning my escape from Hollywood and writing business plans. There are three corporate-owned locations (two in Denver, Colorado, and one in Dallas, Texas) and two franchises: one outside of Dallas and mine in Huntersville. I decided to partner with this new and emerging brand instead of building a business from the ground up, and I am very happy I did.” With three girls under the age of 4 (Victoria, Blake, and Rae), Kevin says he is in the “childcare trenches” right now but loves every second of it. After an esteemed and exciting career in Hollywood, Ninja Nation is the next chapter for Kevin as his life comes full-circle … he went big and came home! w

onderful.” “Excellent.” “Always a pleasant experience.” These are just a few of the comments folks have made about Dr. Brad Haines and Dr. Steven White, the duo docs behind White & Haines Advanced Dentistry in Cornelius. These words (and endless positive reviews!) are what fuels these dentists to deliver top-notch care — to every patient, every time. An interest in putting others first started quite young for both men. They were inspired to pursue dentistry when they were just kids. “My father was a dentist,” Dr. White explains, “and for that reason I was drawn to the dental profession at an early age. I have always liked working with my hands and fixing things.” As for Dr. Haines, a close proximity to the profession led him down his fated path: “I grew up down the street from my dentist,” he says. “He let me come and work in his practice where I saw the lifechanging benefits of dentistry for patients who needed help.” While both doctors have roots in other states and cities, they share a dual love for the Lake Norman area and a passion for their families. Dr. Haines has three kids—Kate, Riley, and Anderson—with his wife, Tiffany. Dr. White’s family includes his wife, Debi, and their five children: Matthew, Connor, Libby, Joseph, and Anna.

In Dr. White’s downtime, he can be found skiing in the chilly winter months and hitting the links in the summer — the latter being especially easy in this golffriendly area we call home. “I really enjoy being outside, and I stay active by running, biking, or hiking with the family.” In addition to being wholly devoted to their families and a successful dental practice, Dr. Haines and Dr. White say their spirituality is key to living a healthy, balanced life. They both feel very guided by their faith. “If I’m having a challenging day,” Dr. Haines says, “the belief that God is always working for the good of those who love Him keeps me going. I know that there is always a bigger picture and purpose to what I’m going through and that God’s plan for my life is all that matters.” Dr. White agrees: “On a bad day, my faith in God keeps me going. It helps to know that I am never alone, and I truly believe that things will work out because God is in control.” These impassioned business owners say that you do your best work when you take care of others. “I’m a big believer in hard work and honesty,” says Dr. White. “If you do the right thing and care for your patients, then you will be happy and successful.” w

lot of families have traditions that they pass down from generation to generation. After all, tradition is a great way to remind family members that they are connected to a bigger story.
For the Roche family of Davidson, joining the family mortgage business is a time-honored tradition that began when Brad, dad to Bradley, 21, and Jacob, 20, went to work for his own father 28 years ago in Kalamazoo, Michigan. “Instead of going to college, I decided to go into business with my dad,” says Brad. “My wife, Angela, who I met at a high school basketball game, also worked for him.” Brad and Angela eventually became partners in that business. Then, in 2008, Brad received an opportunity to open a mortgage branch for a company in the Lake Norman area, and the family moved to North Carolina. Brad and Angela now look forward to passing on the business values and principles they learned from Brad’s father to their sons, both of whom recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and have

Jacob is assisting Brad and Angela as they guide clients through the mortgage loan process, while Bradley is concentrating on the consulting side of the business where he and Brad work with top-producing loan officers from across the country. “There are a lot of obstacles and challenges in the mortgage process, and it can be a stressful experience for the buyer,” Brad notes. That’s why he and Angela have worked hard over the years to build a brand that offers a “red carpet” mortgage experience instead that makes purchasing a home the special time in the lives of their clients that it should be. “Our service is the lifeblood of our business,” Brad adds. “And now with Bradley and Jacob on board, we can make our clients’ experience even better.” All work and no play would make the Roche family, well… tired—so they know how to relax and have fun together, too. Brad and Angela enjoy motorcycling through the mountains and spending time on the lake, but they also are intentional about starting each day with quality time together. “We have coffee, conversation, and prayer time every morning,” Brad explains. “It’s the best part of my day.” Brad continues that focus on purposeful living throughout his day, especially when those challenges pop up. “Every day can’t be perfect,” he admits. To counter those imperfect moments, Brad has a stockpile of what he calls “tens”—a piece of dark chocolate, a glass of red wine, or a hug from Angela…the list goes on—that he uses to convert a 4 out of 10 day into a 10 out of 10 one. With his sons in the office, though, he doesn’t have to look further than down the hall to get that perfect day, every day: “I couldn’t be more proud to be working with our sons. They bring so much energy and life into this third-generation mortgage business. They truly put a smile on my face.” w

hat happens when two native New Yorker cousins go into business together in Lake Norman? Success … family style. Jason and Andrew Dubrey, co-owners of Sterilizer Autoclave Solutions, are friends, partners, and a couple of the area’s biggest fans. “I was working virtually for a large corporation several years ago,” Jason shares, “and my wife and I decided to rent out our New York home and try living near Lake Norman. We agreed to try it for a year, and we loved it so much that we never went back!” Jason worked in the corporate world for many years, but ultimately he burned out—which led him down a very different path. “I had reached for the ceiling of where I wanted to be,” he continues, “so I rediscovered my entrepreneurial spirit. Shortly after that realization, Andrew asked if I wanted to go into business together. It was a resounding YES.” The cousins quickly realized they had a passion for hard work, connecting with people, and, well, all things LAKE. “I love this area for the most obvious reasons,” admits Andrew. “The lake, boating season, friends, family, and the traffic! I just LOVE the traffic,” he adds jovially and with an obvious lilt of sarcasm.

As the co-owners of a thriving autoclave and infection control company, these two recognize the value of a hard day’s work, but they also savor time spent with loved ones. “My main passion is providing a great life for my family,” says Jason. “I love to watch the joy of my wife and children as we experience new things and places together. There is no greater gift in life than making memories.” He says the ability to provide well for them is what motivates him each and every day. Also topping his list of stuff that keeps him going? Embracing emotional intelligence -- something he says is key for success. “You see, being intelligent can only take you so far, but choosing the right people to have on your team and learning to rely on their abilities and strengths is absolutely key,” he says, adding, “If I want to go fast, I will go alone. However, I want to go far, so I must go together with my team.” This kind of workplace kinship is important to Andrew, too. He enjoys the pace of Sterilizer Autoclave Solutions, and he’s so proud to have embraced this entrepreneurial journey. “I am a mover and a shaker and making things happen is my passion,” he says. “Not having a boss for all these years has changed me in remarkable ways. I am way more motivated knowing it’s up to me to make it happen,” he concludes with a smile. w

ost successful people understand that passion is a powerful force in accomplishing anything you set your mind to. Jack Salzman, co-owner of Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram/Carolina Custom Wheels Tires & Accessories, is no exception. It is his passion for entrepreneurship that led him and his wife, Robin, to purchase the dealership in 2003; it is his passion for winning that has been the driving force behind his success, and it is his passion for his family and his dogs that has kept him grounded and brought him the most happiness. Jack grew up in Sarasota, Florida, and it was in the Sunshine State that he started his career in the automotive industry as the sales manager at an Orlando dealership. After achieving quite a bit of success in that role in only a few years, he was hooked. When the Lake Norman dealership became available in Cornelius, Jack and Robin drove up from Florida to take a look. “We fell in love with the area immediately,” Jack recalls. The couple purchased the dealership, and Robin, who was an awardwinning market manager for CBS Radio, retired so that they could partner in their new endeavor. “We have worked tirelessly together over the past 18 years,” says Jack. Their efforts have paid off, with the

When asked about their success, Jack is quick to credit Robin and her leadership. But when pressed, he also humbly acknowledges his passion for winning, stating, “Whether it is in business or in my personal life, I enjoy putting in whatever effort is required to win and be successful.” For Jack, that effort has meant outworking everyone else. “I was never the smartest,” he explains, “so I was able to be successful by working like someone was coming behind me to take it all away. Fear of failing is a huge motivator for me.” Never was that fear more acute than in 2008 when the great recession wreaked havoc on the auto industry worldwide. “An acquaintance recommended that we find a good bankruptcy attorney because Chrysler was going to go under,” Jack remembers. Since failure was not an option, Jack and Robin turned to what they knew best instead: working harder than anyone else. And not only did they come out the other side big winners, so did their employees, not one of whom was laid off during the economic crisis. While Jack is proud of how his passion has fueled the dealership’s success over the years, it is his passion for Robin, their three children, their eight grandchildren, and their fur babies that really make his eyes light up: “A perfect day for me is spending it wherever Robin, the kids, and the dogs are. They are what make me smile.” w

Attending The Culinary Institute was an opportunity that Chef Paul has never taken for granted. It shaped him for the culinary world and introduced him to the vast array of cuisines and ingredients from around the globe. Cooking for others and seeing the joy on their faces has always been his fuel. It keeps him focused. It keeps him learning, growing, and seeking new ways to improve his craft. “I treat cooking for others the same way I cook for myself,” Chef Paul smiles. “I use the best ingredients that I can source and this shows in the food that I create for my clients. I had quite a bit of exposure to Chinese, Japanese, and Middle Eastern ingredients growing up in Flushing, New York. And traveling to different countries in Europe and eating at the small local restaurants really showed me that simple can be outstandingly delicious.” As a child, young Paul always enjoyed cooking with his mother and both of his grandmothers, which led to his interest in becoming a chef. “My first full-time job was when I was 16. It was in a pizzeria and I worked there all through high school. Ever since then serving quality, delicious food has been a very strong passion of mine.” Both of Paul’s parents have been great inspirations for him and have been an incredible support system as well. They taught him to believe in himself, always persevere, and never give up: “I’ve received an immeasurable amount of support from them and am truly grateful for this. By words and by example, they inspire me daily to always follow my dreams and not those of others … do what makes you happy and be great at it. Never settle for less than your absolute best. Spend your time being the best person that you can be and do not waste time with the negativity or persuasions of others when they do not understand. Stay true to yourself.” w

n order to have a successful business, you have to be driven and organized. Being in business for yourself, you have to get up and get going. No one is going to tell you to clock in. You have to push yourself. It’s also very important to take time for yourself. You have to make yourself a priority. This will make you successful in business as well as in life.” These are just a few golden nuggets of advice, learned the hard way, by Stan Ragley, owner of Lazer Engraving Specialists in Cornelius. Stan grew up in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, home of Punxsutawney Phil. A young Stan, however, did not need a weather-forecasting groundhog to predict his future; he knew early on what he wanted to do … own his own business! “I wasn’t sure what, but I knew I wanted to go into business for myself,” Stan says. “I grew up in a family business. My grandfather started an appliance company selling Maytag washers and dryers doorto-door in Western Pennsylvania. My dad followed in his footsteps and took over the appliance store and expanded it to include furniture and eventually opened a hardware store. I worked alongside my parents, handling deliveries and doing the marketing.” Stan graduated from St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, New York, and received an MBA from UNCC in 1995; he was working for an equipment manufacturer when he got laid off later that same year. “I had been considering going out on my own,” Stan shares, “and being laid off allowed me to jump start my plans. I saw that there was a void in financing for those needing to obtain equipment, so I started Leasing Resources, Inc.”

After financing some lasers that are used to engrave and etch, Stan became intrigued by what the lasers could do and wanted to address that niche as well—Lazer Engraving Specialists was born. “Now I have both,” Stan smiles. “I do specialty engraving as well as equipment financing.” Stan has two grown children: Madison, 28, who lives in Charleston, South Carolina, and Landon, 24, who lives in Dallas, Texas. When not busy at work, Stan likes to garden, hit the links, or just chill to some Dave Matthews tunes … with a cold brew in hand and a lake in view!

“My mom always said God helps those who help themselves and I kind of live by that,” Stan says, with obvious love and respect for his mother. “I try to keep a positive attitude and work hard. Nothing in life is free. You have to go get it! When my best friend died from a brain tumor at just 42 years old, I realized you have to take life by the helm and take nothing for granted. You must work for what you want in life … you can’t be healthy, you can’t be fit, you can’t be successful without putting in the work and making it happen. There is no magic pill. hether or not you believe in destiny there is no denying that some of us are born to follow a certain path. Just ask Doug Fogle. He’s played an integral part in the insurance business since he was, well, a kid.
N! E M
“From the time I was born I was watching my father in the insurance industry,” he says. “I was always drawn back to the sales and flexibility of the business. At a young age, I was assisting with stamping envelopes and taking messages for my dad.” It’s safe to say the family business is in his blood. His father, George D. Fogle, Sr., founded Fogle Insurance Group in 1983. Doug was born in Charlotte and lived there until 2003 when Lake Norman became his adopted home. The community feel, combined with his robust love of boating and jet skiing, make it the perfect place for Doug and his two sons, Jorin, 17, and Oliver, 15. “The things I enjoy most are hanging out with my boys and working on my cars in the garage. Also, I love my simple woodworking projects.” When it comes to really unwinding and taking a muchneeded break, though, this devoted father of two heads to the Myrtle Beach area for some true R&R. “We travel as often as we can,” Doug smiles. “My trips to our family beach home in Holden Beach is my relaxing time … and the kids love it since they spent so much time growing up there.” Doug acknowledges that a good support system is necessary for success, and he gives much credit to his own family and the stellar colleagues with whom he works. “I surround myself with great people — both professionally and personally. We have an amazing team at our office who have always been a huge part of our success.”
DOUG
And while it may be too soon to see which path his kids take as they become adults, he’s incredibly proud of how he’s continued to make his business thrive. It’s what fuels him … every single day. “My goal is to keep the business growing and be successful long term in case my sons or nephews decide they want to be a part of the business one day.”

like any fluid, living
thing, marriage must be cultivated, nurtured, and tended to; it mustn’t be ignored or left alone to try to flourish. When histories, egos, and personalities unite as one, there is much to learn. Here are a few topics to consider:
Keep communication open and dialogue welcome. Own your feelings and speak your truth but do so in a calm, practical, problem-solving way … use “I feel” and “I heard” as opposed to phrases such as “You always” or “Why can’t you?” This can come off as accusatory simply by the words you choose, so choose wisely.
Transparency is key. Professionalism with work colleagues is paramount, and open communication is critical here as well. Intimate settings are often necessary in business, but let your spouse know if there are one-on-one meetings with colleagues of the opposite sex. Then choose to meet in an open environment such as the office or lunch with a group.

Friends of the opposite sex can be tricky. Some questions to help in this arena are: Is your spouse fully aware of the friendship? Would you behave differently around your friend if your spouse were present? Would you feel uncomfortable if your spouse had a similar relationship with someone? This is the perfect time to honor the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
That pesky testosterone! It is a scientific fact that men are less likely to use their brain when under stress due to testosterone. As cavemen you can see how this would be very practical when needing adrenalin to act quickly if a mastodon is heading your way—but in today’s world anger is not your ally. When you lose your temper, your primitive self is trying to get in control but you are actually losing status in the relationship. Keep your temper, ego, and instincts under check … therein lies your power. w

HEALTH
While many of us don’t know how to approach the subject with our partners or our doctors, I would suggest that discussing sex openly and honestly is critical for your health and a healthy sexual life. Here’s why: • Open discussion helps relieve stress – which is not only great for your sex life, but for your overall health. Men and women who report a satisfying sex life have significantly lower odds of undiagnosed and uncontrolled high blood pressure and are generally healthier and happier.

sexual HEALTH
“How do I improve my sex life, libido, orgasms? What’s normal?” No one answer applies to every person. This is especially true when I ask patients what they want to improve, and why. Even though I am primarily talking to women, this really is true across the board for both sexes, and all sexual preferences. A S A N O B - GY N I O F T E N G E T A S K E D,

• Intimate conversations aren’t only about pleasure. Other topics can include how frequently you’d like sex, how to explore unknowns or how to deal with differences in what you and your partner enjoy. It may be a bit uncomfortable at first, but it gets easier and your relationship will benefit in the long run. • Respect and feeling respected are key to sexual satisfaction. Using so-called “I” statements while talking to your partner is a communication technique that helps emphasize the speaker’s experience, without shaming, blaming or complaining about the other person. Be kind, open, understanding and empathetic to each other’s words, wants and needs.
Not sure how to talk about sex with your partner? Here are some ways to get started: • Set a specific time to talk about intimacy. • Be empathetic to and respectful of your partner’s words.

negatively affecting more than 160 million people and families. It is a common complaint and discussion with patients in my dental chair, as we healthcare providers are better understanding how detrimental untreated snoring and related sleep apnea can be to one’s overall health.
What causes snoring?
Snoring happens when the flow of air through your mouth and/or nose is blocked. Some people snore occasionally during allergy season or when they have a sinus infection, due to temporary nasal congestion. However, most snoring is a result of reduced airway space in the throat. Muscles and soft tissues of the mouth relax during sleep, allowing the lower jaw to fall back, (especially with back-sleeping), compromising the amount of airflow. Tongue size and extra weight around the neck can compound the degree of obstruction. As air attempts to pass through the constricted space, its increased velocity vibrates the soft tissues of the throat, producing the snoring we hear. Snoring can itself be a symptom of a health problem called obstructive sleep apnea. Those with sleep apnea have multiple extended pauses in breath when they sleep. These breathing lapses cause lower-quality sleep and affect the body’s supply of oxygen, leading to potentially serious health consequences.
What are the risks of untreated snoring or sleep apnea?
Because of the affected oxygen balance in the body, untreated snoring and sleep apnea raises dangerous risks for various cardiovascular problems. Produced strain on the heart increases blood pressure, creating a greater risk of coronary artery disease, heart arrhythmias, heart attack, and stoke. GERD is also more likely to be present in those who snore due to disordered airway flow and pressure changes, which affect the contents of the stomach and esophagus. In addition, interrupted sleep is associated with mental and emotional challenges, such as anxiety and depression. Hormone imbalances and weight gain are tied to a lack of quality sleep. Sleepiness during the day can also interfere with mental awareness and increase risk for injury and accidents. What can be done to stop snoring or correct sleep apnea?
Talk to a doctor or dentist if you are overly sleepy during the day, if you snore often or very loudly, or if a partner notices that you sometimes stop breathing altogether. You may be referred for a sleep study to confirm the degree of snoring and/or sleep apnea. If diagnosed with a problem, a common treatment is the nightly use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. These devices push air through a mask and into the airway to keep it open during sleep. These are tolerated with varying degrees of difficulty. An effective alternative to a CPAP machine, is a dentist-prescribed mouthpiece or snore guard. It is a less cumbersome, affordable, noninvasive snoring solution that has proven highly effective in maintaining airway space. It is a custom-fitted dental device, worn in the mouth as upper and lower trays connected by sidebars, which holds the lower jaw in a slightly forward position while sleeping. It can be adjusted by a sleep-trained dental professional for maximum comfort and effectiveness. w

SPOILER ALERT:
Men and women are different. Ok, so maybe that fact didn’t really surprise you. After all, it’s been 27 years since John Gray popularized the idea that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. And as much as we love sharing women’s stories, we decided it was time to lend the Martians of LKN our ear, too. This month we share the perspective of Mark Freeman, fine artist.
that's what
Said
MARION (MARK) FREEMAN, ARTIST A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Marion (Mark) Freeman has lived in various locations throughout the country, but he founded his business and raised his family in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he grew his advertising firm to one of the top in the state. After a nearly 30-year stint running his company, Mark decided to sell and move to sunny South Florida to pursue his passion in fine art. EARTH WITHOUT ART IS “EH”
I want to touch people’s lives with my art. I want them to realize I care deeply and sincerely. I want my works to evoke passion and caring and most certainly love. The blessing of having the opportunity to soothe or excite or even ponder in introspection is an incredible gift. When you buy a work of mine, you are buying more than an object. You are purchasing hundreds of hours of errors and experimentation, times of toil and, perchance, frustration intertwined with moments of PURE JOY!
NORTH CAROLINA MUSE
In addition to visiting my North Carolina cousins growing up, I attended and led many church groups in the state. I have a lot of fond memories of my time in NC, and much of my earlier works were inspired by the beauty there … I even have a few of Lake Norman! LIVE HAPPY, BE GRATEFUL
We’re all responsible for our own experiences, so I’ve always encouraged my sons to leave a situation feeling like, “Wow, that was enjoyable!” or “I sure feel good about myself ” or “That was time I really enjoyed.” It is simply a matter of effort...make that effort! My grandfather always reminded me that life is GOOD, and when I showed signs of feeling sorry for myself for one reason or another, he would always quip: “I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet.” w
Mark is a fine artist who shows in many locations throughout the Southeast and lives with his wife, Leslie, in Delray Beach, Florida. In addition to doing commissioned pieces, Mark also does freelance graphic design. Connect with him at 865.382.3431 or see his collections at www.marionfreeman.com.

He wisely taught us that “happiness cannot be pursued, but must ensue.” The loving and disciplined Mahatma Gandhi similarly stated, “No one can hurt me without my permission.”
It caught me off guard. Of course I can! I have love for my wife, and five children, my parents, siblings, and so many others. Fortunately, I read on … You can’t have love for someone — simply think loving thoughts about him or her, and then consequently experience the feeling of love. I’ve studied this deeply ever since and found great liberation in it. The principle is that the circumstances of our lives (anything out of our control) do not determine our feelings, actions, or results. Only our thoughts do.
So why is this good news? Because we always retain our right to choose and change our thinking. Professionally, I help parents to create a clear family culture. They choose and convey the identity and behaviors that they know will yield lives of balance, meaning, and joy for themselves and their children. This principle of using our mind to create what we want is always among the first principles I invite them to further discover.

How valuable this would have been for me to know when I had cold feet before, during, and even after my marriage. I thought that it was a sign that I had made the wrong choice — but really I see now that I had skewed ways of thinking about what a happily married person “should just feel” when they are with the right person. Thankfully, my wife has the patience of Job. This ability to choose our thoughts doesn’t only extend to others but also (and perhaps most importantly) to ourselves. So many of us berate ourselves day to day, routinely finding evidence of our weaknesses. Sometimes we make it funny enough to share
with others, but that is a poor use of our cleverness. That type of negative thinking never leads to the feelings of confidence, love, and gratitude that will enable you to do your best work. So take your thoughts captive, choose wisely, and create positive energy for you and your family. w Weston Arntsen is a family culture coach who started Greentree Coaching after 17 years in the hospitality industry.
