AN ARTIFICIAL REEF IN THE UAE
La Journée mondiale de l’océan du 8 juin a vu l’AZRAQ co-sponsoriser un récif artificiel avec Freestyle Divers à Dibba (Fujairah) qui permettra aux organisations de surveiller la croissance de la biodiversité dans l’écosystème marin et fournira aux plongeurs de la région une nouvelle vie marine à observer. Un récif artificiel est une structure sous-marine fabriquée à partir de matériaux respectueux de l’océan qui imite les caractéristiques des récifs naturels (celui-ci a une forme de requin). Une fois posé avec des matériaux appropriés, au fil des mois et des années le corail grandit, attirant les poissons et créant un nouvel écosystème marin sain. Le récif artificiel contribuera à étendre le biotope existant, résistera aux dommages causés par les tempêtes et par le blanchissement des coraux et permettra de mesurer scientifiquement la vitesse à laquelle le nouveau récif se peuple de différentes espèces.

Artificial reefs are underwater man-made structures, made from ocean-friendly material, that mimic the characteristics of natural reefs (this one has the shape of a shark). Once laid with appropriate materials, over the course of months and years the coral grows, attracting fish and creating a new and healthy marine ecosystem. The artificial reef to be placed in Dibba Al-Fujairah will help extend the existing ecosystem, withstand damages from storms and coral bleaching and provide the basis to scientifically measure the speed at which the new reef populates with different species.
