PRESIDENT'S DIARY Irish Christian Endeavour Union President Alan Blair 23.01.16 First Portadown Seniors A really enjoyable night with my neighbours in Portadown. Always encouraging to me personally and encouraging also to see the close fellowship which the members have together, one of the great benefits of Christian Endeavour. 05.02.17 Clonaneese Presbyterian CE Sunday A superb Service. The ability, enthusiasm and dedication was almost tangible. So many people putting in a tremendous effort for a lot of years and the fruits of that commitment is clear to see. 06.02.17 Hill Street Juniors and Seniors What can I say? This is my Church family in Lurgan. A great night with both leaders and children at the earlier Junior CE meeting, this is a great wee group - I’m allowed to be biased! Meeting with the Senior CE was, as always, such an encouragement. Thank you to both Societies for your encouraging words and for your prayers throughout my year as President. God’s Richest Blessing to you all. 10.02.17 First Newtownards Junior CE This was a great night spent at First Newtownards. Great to see dedicated leadership in action here too as it is across our Societies. Keep up the good work, keep sowing the seed of the Gospel and God will bring the growth.

17.02.17 Tandragee Methodist Junior CE An evening with the Juniors that was ‘crisp’ (pardon the pun). This is a grand wee bunch of young people really growing in their love and ability for the Lord. This is fruit for years of dedication 19.02.17 Shore Road CE It was a pleasure to have been asked to speak at Shore Road City Mission, Belfast. This was a great evening with very capable young people. Thanks to all involved in a great evening. 21.02.17 Ballygawley Presbyterian Junior CE Wow, what a crowd it would be fair to say one of our larger Societies. What a tremendous opportunity to share with the young people there. A lively bunch; very willing and able to take part. This was a very enjoyable night. 04.03.17 Boys’ Brigade Battalion Prayer Breakfast, Lurgan I was delighted to be asked to speak at our local BB Battalion Prayer morning in my capacity of President of CE. I got to share a bit on the work of CE and how all of us, involved in working for Christ in youth organisation, can be an encouragement to each other. Thanks for the breakfast too!! 06.03.17 St Mark’s Church of Ireland Senior CE Just brilliant – this was what I can only term as a ‘lovely evening’. I came away feeling really blessed for being in the midst of some really ‘lovely’ people. What else could bring people together in such a way, other than Christ and His Church. 11.03.17 Irish CE Union Seniors’ Spring Rally Ravenhill A great afternoon at this Irish event and a very insightful talk by Mr Tom Dick, representing The Vision of Good Hope Moldova, on the work being done in Eastern Europe. These types of National events are great to get Endeavourers together, to encourage friendships and encourage partnership within our CEs. Do try to attend your next National event. 23.03.17 Second Broughshane Presbyterian What a great number of parents and friends of CE turned up to the Parents’ and Friends’ Night at Broughshane. This was a well organised night presenting what the young people had been taught throughout the year. This night demonstrated how important it is to engage with the parents of the children involved in our CEs. Well done to all those who organised and took part in this fantastic night. 25.03.17 Armagh & South Tyrone CE Union Junior Fun Day Great fun, running about playing games and a puppet show too. The young folk had a great time and the gospel was clearly presented.

26.03.17 Clonaneese Presbyterian Senior CE Testimony Night I’ve had a few ‘landmark’ events in CE, this was one. I was asked to take part and share my testimony with the members there. It was the testimony of others though that really blessed me and challenged me to consider how much of my life do I hand over to God. This was a night where trusting God as Lord over all of our life was brought very much to the fore. Thank you N.C. for sharing your testimony with us. 09.04.17 Garvaghy Presbyterian CE Sunday I was delighted to be invited to speak at the CE Sunday Service at Garvaghy. This was a great service with so many taking part, even Philip Meeke, crutches and all – real dedication. There is a tremendous work being done in Garvaghy for which we can be so thankful to God. 24.05.17 CE Ireland – Seniors Spring Break Up to the North Coast in stunning weather. Although small in number the craic was good and time spent with fellow Endeavourers was great. While I was only there for an evening I know those there had a great time. 08.06.17 Meeting with World CE Secretary, Dave Coryell We were delighted to be able to meet with the World CE Secretary, Dave Coryell when on his visit to Europe. Dave very kindly took time out of his busy schedule to stop over in Ireland and spend time meeting with the Executive. This was a very encouraging time where we got to know Dave and his aspirations within his role of Secretary of World CE Union. I was very encouraged by his enthusiasm for both spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and his commitment, through the work of CE, to do this. We took some time beforehand to visit the Titanic Centre and the next morning we visited the Giant’s Causeway before his journey onward to Scotland, England and then Germany.

Thanks I have thoroughly enjoyed my year as President and, ahead of the upcoming Convention in September, I want to say thank you to all those Societies who extended an invitation for me to come, I have enjoyed every one. In my year of Office, I hope that I conveyed the great debt of thanks that is owed by the National Executive to you all for the commitment, dedication and self-sacrifice that so may give in service to Christ through the work of Christian Endeavour.

Newtownards Presbyterian have visit from Mr Alan Blair, Irish CE Union President

Can I encourage you all to continue this work and to pray for each other in our CE Societies, our Local Executives and National Executive as we all strive to raise the standards of CE and to Fly the Flag for Christ and His Church. THE NEW IRISH CE PRESIDENT MEET IRISH CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR'S NEW PRESIDENT, MARK CRAWFORD. Hi. My name is Mark Crawford and it is my privilege to undertake the role of Irish Christian Endeavour (CE) President for the year 2017-2018. A civil engineer by profession, I am married to Victoria and we have been blessed with two daughters. When I get a chance I enjoy playing and watching rugby. I am currently a member of Newmills Presbyterian, Co.Tyrone, however, my involvement in CE started when I grew up in Fermanagh and attended Knockninny Junior and Young People’s CE. It was here that I was encouraged in my Christian faith and given opportunities to help out leading worship and giving short talks. Over time I was encouraged to help as a leader and have since served as Young People’s Convenor on both the Enniskillen Area Executive and Irish Union Board level. I have a passion for working with young people and this has been strengthened over the years as I have been involved in various roles but particularly in the annual summer camps. These camps teach and train its members for service in their local Church through participation. As I look back attending the summer camps and the teaching and training I received in my own Society as a teenager were a real blessing and encouragement to me in my faith and the development of other skills. As I look forward to the next year, it is my prayer that Irish Christian Endeavour will be strengthened through spreading the Gospel and training young people in the service of the Church. I am looking forward to visiting Societies and members across the country to see how God is changing lives.

THE GENERAL SECRETARY LOOKS BACK At the Enniskillen Convention, I will stand down as General Secretary after 10 years in office. It is fitting that it is at this Convention that my tenure will finish as the Enniskillen Convention of 1965 was my first Irish CE Convention. But in this article I want to explore my journey through Christian Endeavour but as Paul says not to boast but honour the Christ whom I have served for over 50 years. My first contact with CE was in my home congregation of Regent Street Presbyterian, Newtownards. The leader of the Young Peoples CE, Miss Nicholl, knowing that I was a young Christian newly converted approached me to join the Society. This was the beginning of my journey. I became, inside a couple of years, totally committed to CE and served on the Bangor and Ards CE Council. Various positions were given to me during those years and they included Press Officer, Missionary Convenor, Young Peoples’ Convenor and Extension Convenor. One of the events started during my time as YP Convenor was the Dawn Service on Scrabo. This continues to this day and has stood the test of time. I will never forget the night it was being discussed on the Council and my youthful remark, “who is going to organise that” to which the Rev Jackson Buick said. “you are”! Other memories of that time were visiting a Society at the bottom of the Ards Peninsula and as none of us on the YP committee could drive it was done by motor bike with me as pillion passenger! There were many during this period to whom I would call mentors and looked up to for advice

and help and I unashamedly name them:Harry Martin, John Clarke, Bill Moore, Rev Jackson Buick, names that some of you will not know but had an influence in my life of commitment to CE. It has been said that the letters CE do not just stand for Christian Endeavour but “Courting Encouraged” and this was true when I met Minnie who was also involved in CE to form a partnership which has lasted over 40 years. When on marriage in 1978 I moved to Belfast my involvement in CE was initially in my congregation of Westbourne Presbyterian Church Junior CE with my wife Minnie who was the leader. Eventually, I was brought on to the East Belfast CE Executive to serve, taking up the position of Extension Convenor. Irish CE came in 1985 and asked if I would take on the position of the Irish Union Extension convenorship and subsequently served in this position for nine years. Then in 2005 people in the Bangor and Ards area came to me and asked if I would allow my name to go forward as Irish President. Initially, I refused but they were persistent and I agreed to believe that this was another chapter in the plan that God had for me. I served as President for the 2005-2006 year and thoroughly enjoyed travelling about visiting Societies. A number of young people accompanied me on these visits transporting me to different venues as I do not drive and I will always be thankful for their assistance even though there were times we got lost! It was a joy to me that one of my final engagements was to speak at Regent Street Presbyterian Church, the place where my journey in CE started. After that period of service, it came as a surprise to me to be asked to take the position of General Secretary of Irish Christian Endeavour.

As I had just retired it became evident that God still had work for me to do and I was elected at the Annual General Meeting in, of all places, the 2007 Irish Convention in Newtownards, being held at First Newtownards Presbyterian Church. I came full circle back to where my Christian Endeavour experience began and the very Church some of my mentors came from. God does indeed work in mysterious ways! I do not know what lies ahead but God knows and He will have a plan. During my year as President I took the verse from Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you”. This remains relevant in my life and I trust that for all who read this that it will resonate with them also. God does not always show what He has in store for us in our lives but, be assured, it is always for good. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought about the passage he had planned for me over the last 54 years since joining Christian Endeavour. So for any young person reading this let me say just leave yourself open to the guidance of God and allow Him to take control of your life. As I ponder my ten years in office and the way God has continually led me through the Christian Endeavour Movement let me say that it is always been for Christ and His Church. May I end this by expressing my wholehearted thanks to leaders, Personal Members, members of Local Executives, Boards and Council past and present for all their assistance and prayers over these past 10 years. May our God continue to bless the work of Christian Endeavour in Ireland. Robert Tinney.

LOOKING BACK

PRAISE & PRAYER

LOOKING BACK 75 YEARS AGO TO BROOKEBOROUGH JUNIORS

“Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool; for He is holy.” Psalm 99:5

Brookeborough Methodist Juniors are still meeting regularly so it was particularly interesting to read in the issue of, “The Impartial Reporter” dated May 25, 2017, that the Society was making the headlines 75 years ago in the issue of June 4, 1942. “Brookeborough gained two honours at the CE Rally held in Enniskillen on the 27th ult. Its CE Society won the Junior Shield of the CE Union and its Methodist Minister, Rev Wm Buchanan was elected President of the Union”. Reprinted with the kind permission of the Editor, “The Impartial Reporter”.

LOOKING BACK 50 YEARS AGO IN THE ENNISKILLEN UNION This year the Enniskillen Union is preparing to host the 103rd Irish National CE Convention but 50 years ago the Local Union was receiving mention in one of the Local Papers, “The Impartial Reporter” and we were reminded of this fact in its edition of March 16, 2017, in an article entitled: Looking Back…50 Years Ago March 16 1967 “Rev. Alan Hanna, of Enniskillen Methodist Church, has been nominated as President of the Enniskillen and District CE Union. He will be installed by the outgoing President, Mr Hylands Mitchell”. Reprinted with the kind permission of the Editor, “The Impartial Reporter”.

Praise God for Robert Tinney’s faithful service as General Secretary and his wife Minnie in the office. Pray for a smooth transition as they prepare to hand over their responsibilities to the new General Secretary at the Enniskillen Convention. Pray for wisdom for those involved in moving the office facilities to a new location later this year. Praise God for the blessings Alan Blair has experienced as he spoke at CE Societies and events during his year as Irish CE President. Pray for the incoming Irish CE President who will take over from him and for safety in travel. Pray that new CE Societies will start up again this autumn to add to the ones that are already established, some of them for many years. Pray that many children, young people and adults will meet around God’s Word and be challenged in their walk with Him. Pray for God’s blessing on the 103rd Convention in Enniskillen, 16-17 September 2017. Pray that God will use His Word as it is brought to us by Andrew Mullan. Pray for the ongoing preparations for the 104th Convention, to be hosted by Armagh and South Tyrone Union. Abaana is the new overseas missionary project. Pray for the representatives who will visit CE Societies, that we will be encouraged to support their work among children, mainly in Uganda. Lizanne McKee THE IRISH ENDEAVOURER

OBITUARY

a member of Lisbellaw Methodist JCE, held a Vintage Coffee Morning in the school in his memory and raised in excess of £6,500.00, a truly magnificent sum for Make-A-Wish Foundation.

THOMAS JACK MAGEE, who died on Thursday 6th April 2017 as the result of a tragic accident, was a member of the Lisbellaw Methodist CE Family. Not quite five years old he was the only son of Davy and Jackie Magee of Maguiresbridge. Thomas also leaves his sisters Emily [8] and Lucianna [2] together with his grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and wider family circle. The love and sympathy of the wider CE Family is extended to the Magee and McCourt families and we continue to hold them in our prayers. Thomas was a very happy child with a wonderful smile that lit up the lives of all with whom he came into contact. He was such an appreciative little boy with exemplary manners never failing to express his gratitude. Thomas’ wish was to become a farmer just like his Daddy. He was totally absorbed in the life of the family farm and was in his element helping out there. On the evening following the tragedy, the Lisbellaw CE leaders opened the Prayer Room in the church; another prayer vigil was held in Maguiresbridge Methodist on the same evening with huge numbers in attendance. Many hundreds of people poured into the family home to sympathise in the days prior to the Funeral Service which was held on Sunday 9th April in Maguiresbridge Methodist Church. It too was attended by hundreds of people with many travelling long distances. On Wednesday 28th June, when Thomas would have been completing his P1 year in Maguiresbridge Primary School, his 8 year old sister Emily, also a pupil there as well as being

The inspirational, kind hearted little girl had chosen this charity because Thomas was so happy on the farm and he had his wish granted every day and she wanted to make some other little boy’s or girl’s wish come true too.

SENIORS SENIORS/COMRADES FIND OUT ABOUT VISION OF GOOD HOPE IN MOLDOVA The Seniors’/Comrades’ Spring Rally was held on Saturday 11 March 2017 at 3.00pm in Ravenhill Presbyterian Church, Belfast. This was a very worthwhile afternoon and a great time renewing friendships and was chaired by Mr Robert Tinney. Our CE President, Mr Alan Blair encouraged us and we are grateful for his enthusiasm for CE. We always enjoy Mrs Olive Gardiner’s sharing of her poems. This particular poem was about the boy with two little fishes and five loaves of bread. Our speaker was Mr Tom Dick who represented Vision of Good Hope, Moldova. Based in N.Ireland, the charity is making a difference to the lives of many people, particularly children, in one of the poorest regions of Eastern Europe. They own and operate an orphanage, provide employment opportunities for local people and support local families, projects and institutions. Find out more on: www.visionofgoodhope.co.uk Our thanks also to Mr Leslie Scott who makes everything happen. Ted Harrison.

SENIORS SPRING BREAK COMRADES ENJOY PLEASANT SPRING BREAK This year we stayed from Tuesday 23rd until Friday 26th May in Magheraboy Hotel, Portrush.

Comrades enjoying their Spring Break

The food was faultless and the hotel excellent not one complaint was heard!!!!! No stairs!!!!!!!! Each morning we had ‘Thought for the Day’ after breakfast. Wednesday morning we all went to Rosemary’s caravan and had a sing-along as well. Alan Blair (Irish Union President) came on Thursday 25th May for our evening meal and meeting afterwards. He showed us a video (based on Scripture ) of how Mighty our GOD is. Also, a video of a human cell amazed us all. It is humbling to think that such an awesome ONE cares for each one of us. His LOVE never changes to those who trust in HIM.

The Comrades, with Jean McGall [left] & Rosemary McDaniel [front right] enjoying a very pleasant Spring Break.

Then there was the trip to Bushmills Garden Centre and the day out by train to Londonderry. Jean McGall (Irish Union Treasurer) spoke very meaningfully of how the Lord holds us in the hollow of HIS Hand. On the last day, Rosemary McDaniel reminded us that GOD's Timing is perfect. Thank you, Rosemary and Jean, for a very lovely 4 days. Hazel McCready

BRITISH CE NEWS CE HOLIDAY CENTRE REOPENS IN NORTH WALES We are in a very exciting stage at Christian Endeavour Holiday Centres. Our Board of Trustees decided that Beechwood Court, which has been part of the organisation for over 95 years, reopened in April 2017. The Pleasaunce, another Centre will re-open later in the year. Beechwood Court is located in Conwy, North Wales and the Pleasaunce is in North Norfolk. For many years the Centres were run with the help of Christian volunteers from around the world and we want to bring this idea back. We would like to connect with the WCEU in finding Christians who are interested in experiencing new cultures, learning English and developing their faith. The Holiday Centres are used by churches, families, individuals etc. as a place to holiday or meet in a Christian environment. These holidays would have organised activities by leaders who would organise fun and games, excursions and praise and worship. The volunteers we have would be offered accommodation on site, their food and an allowance so they can purchase their essential items. They would be part of the community on site volunteering in the kitchen, grounds and maintenance, house keeping or even as part of the office team.

WCEU NEWS WORLD'S CE UNION BOARD MEETING World CE Board Meetings took place in August in Los Angeles, California

Our documents for ‘expression of interest’ in volunteering should be going on our website soon. For more information visit: http://www.worldsceunion.org/ http://www.christianholidays.co.uk/ THE IRISH ENDEAVOURER

ARMAGH & SOUTH TYRONE ENCOURAGING TURNOUT AT ARMAGH & SOUTH TYRONE RALLY The annual Armagh & South Tyrone Union Presidential Rally was held on the 24th April in 1st Portadown Presbyterian Church Hall. A good number turned out for the evening which was a great encouragement. Miss Alison Colbert played from Clonaneese YPCE while Mrs. Muriel McIlveen from Hill Street Seniors played the closing hymn, “Ireland for Christ”. Rev Ivor Smith, the out-going President, led the meeting and Mr. Billy Calvert, from 1st Portadown Senior CE, opened in prayer. Mrs. Rosemary McDaniel gave the annual report and Clonaneese YP sang two beautiful pieces, “Be still and know that I am God” and “You are my strength when I am weak”. Mrs. Helen Coote, from Hill Street Juniors, read John: 10 v 1-10. Mr. Smith then gave his report of his year in Office after which he handed over the chain to the Rev Maurice Laverty for the incoming year. Mr. Laverty has taken as his theme for his year in Office, The Fuller Life and how we need to strive for that closer relationship with God and want to get to know more of Him. 1st Portadown Seniors provided a beautiful supper which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

REGIONAL NEWS

ARMAGH & SOUTH TYRONE JUNIORS HAVE FUN On Saturday 25th March Armagh and South Tyrone CE Union held their Fun Day in Dungannon Presbyterian Church Halls from 10 am – 12.30pm. As the children gathered in, we played games and had fun together. Then we had some team games with help from young people, leaders, and helpers from Ballygawley/Ballyreagh and Clonaneese CE Societies. We had the privilege of having the Irish CE President, Mr. Alan Blair and our own Union President, Rev Ivor Smith at our Fun Day. At 11.00am we made our way into another hall where Eleanor and her friends, from Seed Sower Puppets, put on a great show with story telling and action songs. We all took part in singing and doing the actions. The puppets shared the creation story and also stressed how very important it is to pray to our God. After saying goodbye to Eleanor, her friends and all the puppets we headed back into the main hall. Mrs. Rosemary McDaniel had prepared hot dogs and chicken bites. After the hot food, there were bars, biscuits, and buns. Everything went down so well. We all sat around and enjoyed our lunch together. Before we knew it was time for home. I want to say a big, “Thank you”, to everyone who made our Fun Day so enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who helped out with registration, games, food, and supervision. We could not run this day without all your help. Thank you so much. We would love to see more at the Fun Day. Whenever we meet up like this, it is good to see the folk from the different CE Societies and build upon our friendships with people whom we might not see too often. Hope to see you next year! ENNISKILLEN UNION ENNISKILLEN UNION LOOKS FORWARD TO REVD ANDREW MULLAN SPEAK ON CONVENTION THEME “WILL YOU TAKE A STAND”?

Rev Andrew Mullan

Members of the Enniskillen Union are busy preparing to welcome fellow Endeavourers, friends and the general public to the 103rd Irish National Christian Endeavour Convention to be held on Friday 15 and Saturday16 September 2017 in Enniskillen Presbyterian Church. They are delighted that The Revd Andrew Mullan has agreed to speak on the theme, “Will you take a stand”? This theme is based on 1Corinthians 16:13 “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong”. Andrew is the Associate Minister at Mourne Presbyterian Church, Kilkeel and has been working there since 2007. Godly parents and the faithful prayers of older Christians were used by God to bring him to a saving faith as a young boy. His family roots are in County Antrim, and he was brought up in Castledawson and Drumbo. He studied law at University before sensing God's call into full-time Gospel ministry. Andrew is committed to discipleship of both young and old and is passionate for preaching the Word locally and globally. His desire is to be wholehearted in his walk with God and to see much glory come to Him as people are saved and Christians are built up. A lover of all sports, any spare time may find him enjoying these especially football, boxing or hiking.

ENNISKILLEN UNION CELEBRATE It's hard to believe that another CE year has ended and what a perfect way to end a beautiful week! On Friday 5th May, the Enniskillen Union gathered together in Ballinamallard Methodist Church for our annual CE Celebration. During the 'roll call', when each Society's name is called, the members recite a piece from the Bible or sing a chorus from a song. The Enniskillen Union celebrated the end of another successful year. Each year we celebrate gifts and talents. This year, the Ruth Snowden Cup for contribution to CE went to Matthew Crozier from Pettigo YPCE. For our challenge shield competitions this year, the Juniors and YPs had to design a banner to be displayed at the Convention in Enniskillen, based on the theme 'Will You Take A Stand?' All the banners were brilliant and obviously a lot of preparation and thought went into them, but there could be only one winning Society in each age group. Togherdoo won the Junior challenge shield and the YP challenge shield went to Pettigo. All the banners will be on display at the Irish CE Convention in September.

The President’s chain this year goes to Diane Simpson from Pettigo CE. We wish Diane all the very best as she travels around the Union speaking about her theme for the year, 'What Is Love’? Our Missionary Project this year is the Northern Ireland Bible Society and the money from the collection plates went to the Project to ensure that every child in the world has a Bible. Our visitor, Leah McKibben from the Bible Society, told us the story about David and Goliath. One side of the church represented the Philistine Army and the other side, the Israelite Army. We heard that no matter how strong the giant is, if we have God’s love in our hearts, we are really the strong side. It was a beautiful way to tell a story for more people understand stories better if they are visualised. After the service, we were treated in the hall to tea, sandwiches and tray bakes. The conversations were never ending, there was plenty of laughter and it was good to see the Juniors running about, having fun whilst making new friends because that is what CE is about - making friends with God and each other.

We thank God for His love and blessings over this past CE year and for the friendships we hold so dear. We thank our leaders for their work in sharing God’s love us at each meeting. Christine Birney, Pettigo YPCE

WIND & RAIN DID NOT DAMPEN SPIRITS AT ENNISKILLEN UNION'S BBQ Where has the last year disappeared to? I simply cannot believe that another CE year has ended! Despite small numbers, Saturday 24th June 2017, saw the gathering for the annual BBQ at Castle Archdale. The wind and rain certainly didn't dampen our spirits! The Juniors played lots games which were organised by our Junior Convenor, Sharon Wilson. A very popular resource used was the parachute! Some of the YPs and leaders decided to let our inner child come out and join in with the Juniors! This year, our speaker was Rev Mark Durrell from Lisbellaw Methodist Church. He spoke to us about conquering our fears through the love of God. Concluding his talk, Mr. Durrell took the opportunity to wish each and every single member in CE, our leaders and our families a safe and an enjoyable summer break. Once again, the BBQ was cooked by Reuben Acheson. On behalf of all Juniors and YPs in the Enniskillen Union, I want to thank all our leaders for their ministry over the past year. I also want to thank God for the many friendships we have within CE. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a safe and an enjoyable summer, ready to go again in September, and we pray for a growth in numbers in the new year. BALLYHENRY PRESBYTERIAN SUMMER REPORTS ON CE SUNDAY IN BALLYHENRY On Sunday 5th February, Ballyhenry Presbyterian Christian Endeavour held their annual service. Katelyn Morrison welcomed the congregation and the Rev. Niall Lockhart made the announcements. Daniel Branagh opened in prayer, and the CE promises were read by Noah, Amie, Louise and Summer. The congregation sang ‘We will fill up this place with His praise’. The CE choir sang ‘It’s a great day to praise the Lord’ and ‘I’m in the Lord’s army’. ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ drama was performed by Katelyn Mal-lard and Gerald. Chain prayers were led by Kirsty, Charlie, Katelyn Mallard, Summer, Abigail and Toni. This year’s missionary projects, supported by CE, are The Bible Society read by Emma, and Charlene’s Project read by Lucy. Then CE members collected the offering. Luke thanked the Lord in prayer and the congregation sang ‘I will offer up my life’. We then had fun with Emma, the CE members, and the puppets as they sang and put on a great performance. This was followed by a drama entitled ‘Are we different’ brought to us by Charlie and Beth. Derek and the members of our Young People’s CE sang ‘Jesus is the Rock’ which ended with us all singing joyfully along. ‘The Bible’ poem was read by Zoe, and the CE members sang their final songs, ‘Joy is a flag’ ‘Deep, deep’ and ‘Do you believe in Jesus’ which they had prepared in recent weeks with Laura. Two more poems were

read, ‘Best seller’ by Jordan, and ‘Read your Bible’ by Abigail. Abbi read God’s Word from Matthew Ch.13 vs 44-46, before the Rev. Lock-hart spoke to the CE and the congregation on the parables of ‘The Hidden Treasure’ and ‘The Finest Pearl’ which teach us that our greatest treasure is in seeking, finding and knowing Jesus. We ended our service with the congregation joining us in singing our closing praise ‘How deep the Father’s love for us’ followed by the Benediction prayer. Summer.

A Junior opened in prayer and the pre-Juniors and Juniors sang accompanied by our own little orchestra made up from all sections. Our Youth Associate and his lovely girl-friend made popcorn and our teenagers staffed the coffee bar providing tea/coffee, traybakes, and shortbread. The coffee bar was absolutely packed and people stayed around just chatting afterward. Everyone enjoyed the movie and had a great night. Three pre-Juniors (aged 3) came forward to close in prayer. It would melt your heart!!

CARNMONEY PRESBYTERIAN CARNMONEY MOVIE NIGHT Our teenagers have spent a lot of time making a film using the puppets and green screen. The theme this year was Superheroes and the film was Superhero High. We are very blessed that we have a techno guy, Ian, who is very talented and understands all of this stuff. The guys had great fun making the film and we wanted to give parents and friends the opportunity to see it, so we organised a "movie night".

CARRYDUFF PRESBYTERIAN

DUNDRUM METHODIST

This session has just flown by for our Juniors and we have had yet another packed year. We meet on a Monday night between 6.30pm and 7.30pm and no hour of the week goes faster! We have a very faithful and enthusiastic band of Juniors who are a joy to meet with each week. We have a very keen interest in missionary news; the Juniors get very involved in prayer for our adopted missionaries along with the CE Missionary Project.

UPDATE FROM DUNDRUM METHODIST JUNIORS IN DUBLIN

Some time ago we asked our Juniors some questions about CE and what they think of CE. The three questions were:- I go to Christian Endeavour because? My favourite part of CE is, and Christian Endeavour will help me as I grow older because? So here is a summary of their answers: Boys and girls come to CE because “it Is fun”; “I learn about God” and “I love God”. The favourite parts of CE are “singing”, “quizzes” and “arts and crafts”. Finally, Christian Endeavour will help as we grow older because “it will help me to be a better person”, “I will do good things”, and “I will know more about God and the Bible”. Surely those answers will inspire all CE Leaders to continue to serve God in Christian Endeavour and be humbled by being a part of shaping young people's lives to the glory of God.

We finished our CE year with great success on Tuesday 9th May. Our Juniors put on a great sale and we managed to raise €420 towards the coming year and towards charities which the Juniors nominate. We have had 6 transition year students join us this year, almost as many as our Juniors. They were a great help in so many ways and felt that the experience had benefited them in their own personal relationship with Christ. Our Minister, the Revd Stephen Taylor, attended our Easter play and was so impressed with the Juniors that they were invited to participate in our Sunday Service in Dundrum recently. Due to commitments some of our Juniors couldn't participate but we formed a chain prayer with past members and the Juniors prayed aloud in Church which was an uplifting experience for our congregation. Some of our Juniors are moving on to secondary school and will no longer be able to attend. We have enjoyed having Katie Taylor, Heather Whelan, and Orla Sisson so much throughout their primary school years and we wish them abundant blessings in their future studies.

HILL STREET PRESBYTERIAN HILL STREET JUNIORS WELCOME TWO PRESIDENTS The Juniors of Hill Street Presbyterian Church Lurgan recently welcomed two different CE Presidents to their meeting. On Monday 6th February the Irish President, Mr. Alan Blair visited. As Alan is a member of Hill Street congregation he is well known to the children who were delighted to have him join with them in their meeting. Alan joined the Juniors in choruses and chain prayer as well as Bible reading and repeating the consecration promises before bringing greetings from the Irish Union and speaking to the children about the 4 standards of CE. He encouraged them to put these 4 standards into practice and also to keep following Christ and serving Him through CE. The Juniors then enjoyed trying on the Presidential chain and having their photo taken with Alan. Our second Presidential visit took place on Monday 20th February when the President of our Local Union of Armagh and South Tyrone, Rev Ivor Smith, joined us for our meeting. Ivor joined with the Juniors in the various items on the programme including the memory verse and then spoke to the children about the different things we use to keep ourselves and our homes clean e.g. soap (for our bodies), toothpaste (for our teeth), washing up liquid (for the dishes), Flash (for cleaning the floors). He reminded us that while these things can clean us and our surroundings on the outside they cannot clean us on the inside. Only God can cleanse our hearts from sin and make us pure in His sight.

Once again the Juniors were able to admire another Presidential chain and the visit was recorded on camera as we all posed for photos with Ivor. We wish our two Presidents every blessing in their year of office and assure them of our prayers as they fulfill their duties and visit many CE Societies throughout the country. IRISH UNION PRESIDENT VISITS HILL STREET SENIORS On Monday 6th February 2017, in Hill Street Presbyterian Senior Society in Lurgan, we had a visit by the Irish President, Mr. Alan Blair. There was a goodly number in attendance and we were particularly pleased to have him in our meeting especially as he is currently a member of our congregation. He has been involved with Christian Endeavour in our Church for a good number of years. Our meeting was our usual monthly consecration meeting and the President took an active part in all aspects of it. He brought to us greetings from the Irish Union and encouraged us in our work for the years ahead. His message to us centred around Hebrews chapter 10 encouraging us to raise the standard and to hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm which centres around our consecration promise. Later we had the opportunity to examine the Presidential chain of office and noted a host of memorable names. LOCAL UNION PRESIDENT BRINGS ENCOURAGEMENT Hill Street, Lurgan, Presbyterian Seniors had a visit from Rev Ivor Smith current President of the Armagh and South Tyrone Union. Ivor is well known and loved by our Society and we were delighted that he was able to slot us into his itinerary. He brought us the good wishes of the Armagh and South Tyrone Union and gave us great encouragement to maintain our enthusiasm for Christian Endeavour.

His talk to us centred around the Gospel of Mark, chapters 4 & 5, where Jesus performed some of His miracles including the calming of the storm; the healing of Jairus’ daughter and the story of the man possessed by evil spirits. He underlined the fact that Jesus was encouraging his listeners to have faith and this is what Ivor was getting across to his listeners that evening. Later we had a chat around a cup of tea and a chance to inspect his chain of office.

So as you have noticed we are a very busy CE. What a privilege it is as leaders to have the job of teaching these children and young people about their need of salvation. Our CE members are all very special and we always have a wonderful time together.

REGIONAL NEWS

MILLTOWN CHURCH Milltown Junior CE meets every Monday night from October through to Easter. We have 30 boys and girls from the youngest of 3 right through to our teenagers of 14. On a normal CE night, we love to sing lively choruses to praise God. Our theme last year was “Because Jesus loves me”. We learned 5 Bible lessons which showed us how much Jesus loves each and every one of us. Later on in the year, we learned the true story of Eric Liddell. He was a gold medalist in the Olympic games. Eric gave it all up to become a missionary in his beloved China. He loved the Chinese people so much he wanted to tell them all about God. We also learned that wonderful Psalm 139 “God knows all about me”. Quizzes are always fun and to end the night off we either have a game or do a craft. In January we always have a special service in Church. This is known as CE Sunday. The children sing and take part in the service. Afterward, we all go back to the hall for Sunday dinner! This is the highlight of our CE year. Last year we had Ruth Lavery, from the CEF and Faith Mission, come and take one of our meetings. We all love Ruth coming as she brings the Bible story to life. We also had Henry Middleton from the Mexican Mission for Street Children. Henry has been before and the children and parents, who also come, hear about the work Henry does with these poor children who are abandoned, born on the street or just can’t go home for various reasons. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room last year as we heard some of the stories about these children. But Henry has a love for them and God has led him to help these children and bring them the love of Jesus.

PRIMACY METHODIST "CE (Christian Endeavour) is all about having fun and learning about God. I have been a member of Primacy Methodist CE for around 5 years. We meet on Monday nights from 6:30 -7:30. At around 7:00 P.M we have a quick snack to keep us going. We sing songs, do colouring in, cutting and sticking and much, much more. We are given jobs to do and we sing songs. All of this leads up to our CE service on the first Sunday of February. We take it in turns to collect the money and to open in prayer. This year we were presented with a cup in memory of a long serving member, Miss Frances Moffitt. The cup was for Christian Faith and Christian Endeavour. I was very honoured when I was awarded this cup at our CE service just last February." Zachary.

RAFFREY IF YOU NEED ENCOURAGEMENT READ ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN RAFFREY Raffrey Juniors are a very small Society who are doing very big things. Please remember these Juniors and their leaders in your prayers. Our CE session commenced in October 2016 with a membership of 4 boys and 1 girl. Our numbers remained low throughout the session, however, we currently have 3 boys who have faithfully given excellent attendance at our weekly meetings. Our first CE evening was a Fun and Food night, followed by an epilogue to introduce our new session. As CE leaders, God has enabled us to teach ‘God’s Big Story’ using material provided by The Bible Society, Northern Ireland. After Christmas, we then taught about Joseph and used his experiences to share God’s message of salvation with our boys. Several of our visiting speakers during the past CE session were members of Raffrey congregation. We would like to thank Rachel Lennon and Mr. Philip Haffey who provided a clear illustration of the Gospel through their Harvest message. Thanks also to Mr. William Jackson who enjoys his visit to CE as much as the CE enjoy having him. Our thanks also to Rachel and Hannah Nelson, who used the story of David and Mephibosheth, to teach the boys about God’s grace. Our session was also enriched by the visits from a number of outside speakers. Thank you to Mr. David Cowan from CEF who re-commenced our session in January following our Christmas break. We would like to thank Miss Angie McKee from CEF, who came along in February and shared a missionary story with the boys. In March, Mark and Ruth Conroy came along with their children, Becky, Ben, Luke and Susanne from our neighbouring Church in Trinity Boardmills. We are always encouraged and touched by their message delivered by the whole family, especially the children. 4 children and 4 adults enjoyed our Christmas trip to Dundonald for Ten Pin Bowling and afterwards to McDonald's. In March we had a trip to ‘We are Vertigo’ for trampolining followed by another visit to McDonald's.

Our fundraising Sports’ Night was held to raise money to support The Bible Society, Northern Ireland. Any money raised was being used to purchase children’s books based on the story of Paul and the Early Church. These books are being distributed to school children through the ‘Amazing Journey’ project. By supporting this project we have helped to spread the Gospel to children all over the Province. Our thanks go to family and friends who helped us raise a fantastic amount of £100.00. We continued to support our missionary, Mary Endersby, by our weekly collection of 2ps. We are delighted with the total amount collected of £70.00. We would like to thank Mr. Thomas Robinson for accepting this money on behalf of Mary. Despite the challenge of holding a CE Service with a small membership we, as leaders, felt our boys deserved the opportunity to praise and thank God for a wonderful CE year. Psalm 107:1 tells us, Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever! GOD IS GOOD. Each Thursday night has been a reminder of his love. We are humbled by his steadfast eternal love so this Family Service allowed us, as leaders, to join with our CE boys to give God all the honour and praise that He deserves. We were grateful to Mr William Jackson for speaking at our Service. William, who is a good friend of Raffrey CE, is passionate about its work. We are equally thankful to others who helped including our praise group and the musicians; David Wells and David Robinson who managed the sound system and all who provided a wonderful supper. Special thanks to the parents of our CE boys. It has been a privilege to work with these children who have always been enthusiastic throughout the session and super little ambassadors for God at the Service. CE leaders and helpers David Heyburn (Senior), Lynda Nelson, Jonathan Christie, David Heyburn (Junior) and Zara Thompson joined in the Service. We thank God most of all, for his guidance, direction, and blessing upon us throughout this year. Our prayer is that Raffrey CE will strengthen and that families will be encouraged to get involved. CE teaches salvation. The salvation of a child is a wonderful miracle that all our children need to experience.
