CHANGING ROLES IN PROBUS

AS we embark on a new year, we are so grateful to Club and Association Management Committees for the ongoing and active support of their Probus Clubs and wider communities.

We are approaching the Annual General Meeting of Clubs, that provide opportunities for members to nominate for positions on their Management Committee. This is a meaningful way for members to contribute to the ongoing success of their Cub as well as the opportunities to strengthen relationships with other members. I encourage all members to consider joining their Club’s leadership team.

The past months have involved the formation of a number of working groups comprising of members willing to contribute their skills, expertise and advice. One such group is the Marketing Consultative Committee made up of Probus members from across Australia and New Zealand.

This group is working directly with our PSPL team to provide their input on our future promotional and marketing programs including the development of our new website.

Another group has been formed in New Zealand to advise and assist with the arrangements and organisation of the 50th Anniversary of Probus in the South Pacific. As you may be aware, the first club was formed in Kapiti Coast in November 1974 and remains as popular and vibrant today.

We have convened a working group of enthusiastic volunteers from both North and South Island Clubs to assist with coordinating this celebration as a national/ international event. This significant

undertaking will be a shared vision and a commemoration of 50 years of Probus in New Zealand. This milestone will be a great rallying point for all Probus Clubs and members and a great source of pride!

One of the primary objectives of Probus South Pacific is supporting all Clubs in membership retention and growth, helping to keep Clubs healthy and active. Our membership strategy is centred around a collaborative approach that sees us all working together for our mutual benefit.

Over time, our membership strategy has evolved and with that, so have the roles of Membership Representatives that include Ambassadors, Probus District Chairs and Rotary District Probus Chairs. We are most thankful for the valuable contribution by these individuals on a regional basis. At the national level, each year, Probus South Pacific Limited (PSPL) seeks nominations from Probus Club members who wish to serve on the PSPL Board or on one of the PSPL Nominating Selection Committees (NSC).

The role of a PSPL Representative Member/Director is, in conjunction with the Board, to ensure the continued growth and success of Probus in the South Pacific region. They are volunteer positions which previously required travel to Sydney on a quarterly basis. However, for the past three years, due to the pandemic, all meetings have been held via technological means with the exception of the Annual General Meeting in August.

We are now calling for nominations from Probus Club members to fill upcoming vacancies for the positions of Representative Member/Director in New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia and New Zealand. The term of office for successful candidates will be from August 2023 to August 2026.

We greatly appreciate the valuable contribution of the current Member/Directors for each of these areas of selection, Bill Killinger AM, Graeme Brown and Tony Blaber, respectively.

Members, particularly those who also have business experience in finance, accounting, communications, marketing, or as a public company Director, are urged to consider nominating. Given the large proportion of female Probians, we hope to see women who meet the criteria nominate for these roles. We ask any member who meets the criteria to consider this opportunity. “Miroir d’Eau” (Mirror Fountain). We spent the evening and morning wandering around Bordeaux before heading off to the neighbouring wine area and hilltop village of Saint-Émilion.

The overnight in Rouen meant we could do a walking tour of the old town, and then stay on to try out a local restaurant and do some shopping into the evening. Brest in the Brittany region is very historical with excursions to Quimper the oldest village in France; and the village of Locronan which dates from 6th Century and the Celts. From Honfluer we visited the British D-Day landing beaches, Bilbao, Spain the Guggenheim Art Museum.

A LATER LIFE JOURNEY

First published in Tui Motu Interislands, May 2022, and is reprinted here with the author’s permission.

I’VE loved this house passionately for 21 years. And here I am choosing to leave it. It started six months ago. I sorted through a couple of boxes of papers (life was lived on paper till the late 90s), then the thought: Anyone would think I was going somewhere. Followed immediately by – ‘Do it now!’ Really? Thinking it through. At almost 80, I am tired of climbing stairs and maintaining a house and garden. Offspring are mostly not geographically accessible and hugely busy. There’s a brand-new retirement village 5k down the road – life needn’t change that much. Isn’t it better to make this

decision for myself rather than wait till someone has to make it for me? Sorting my belongings myself, not leaving it to others. Praying through all this. Discovering close friends are going there too. Eventual ongoing care would be available. The company’s a good philosophical match – no shareholders, an excellent reputation as an employer, sustainable materials and methodology in the build. Signing up.

Then the distilling of my life treasures and memories to fit into half the space I now have. Actively choosing to let things go as part of the spiritual and material preparation for my next life-phase. Wondering deeply about good homes for special things.

Three of those choices will remain as satisfactions. Antiquities

collected by my father on wartime service in Palestine have gone to the Classics Department Museum at Victoria University where I studied. Three bits of terracotta, one with hieroglyphic writing, assessed as from 2000 BC, are from Ur where Abraham was born about that time. Such a powerful connection with my faith roots!

Two of my art works about healing have gone to Women’s Refuge. A circle of little clay women that had been broken, carefully mended and were ‘Dancing Anyway’. The other, a painting called Becoming Whyse on the many ‘Whys’ of grief.

Then there’s the local kindergarten who delightedly receive all sorts of things – scrap paper, ice-cream containers, craft stuff that I might have used but didn’t, a shell collection and much more. A wonderful symbiosis!

treasures, now passed on to the next generation. All an acknowledgement of the reality of death, not discernably imminent, but inevitable. I’ve been drawing on the lilies of the field and the birds of the air, and on Buddhist wisdom for easier aging: Don’t cling – to possessions, opinions, self-image and more. Sadness at realising that the wedding era oak bedroom suite can’t be fitted in to the apartment. Don’t cling! Actively detaching from my beautiful home with the colours I chose still singing to me, all day sun, the stunning view of harbour, mountains and Cook Strait.

Choosing to believe it is time for someone else to have these joys. Don’t cling!

Discovering three people from church are going there too, one of whom will be my next-door neighbour. With the friends, a good basis for a new community. Then the panic about all the things that won’t work for me. The horrible grey carpet – I commented on this to a wise son. His reply: ‘It is a very firstworld problem, isn’t it?’ Of course! Don’t cling! The prospect of early morning truck noise from the nextdoor supermarket. Replace horror with ‘These guys have driven all

night so we can have food.’ A real urge to pull out. Prayer for wisdom. The response: ‘That’s where I want you’. Acceptance and peace.

My beloved long-dead motherin-law has been a role model in this, as in so much else. She was a dedicated Franciscan tertiary. I, as her main carer, was off overseas for two months, and expressed concern for her well-being. ‘Oh’, she said, ‘I’d better go into care. Pass me the phone book’. I spluttered ‘But, but..’ It happened quickly. She loved it. I overheard a conversation between her and another new resident: ‘Columba, don’t you miss your house? I miss mine dreadfully’. Response: ‘No - I’m a Catholic.’ I knew exactly what she meant, but laughed as I imagined the poor questioner’s bafflement.

Choosing our own timing was our way – others make their choices differently and must do what’s right for them. 

AN INTERVIEW WITH ADAM YATES – CEO OF KARAKA PINES VILLAGES

How long have you worked in the retirement village industry?

Over 24 years ago, starting as CEO of Manor Group developing and managing aged care facilities, retirement units and serviced apartments.

What is different about a Karaka Pines Village?

Other retirement villages operate traditionally, where residents pay a large fee for the services and facilities provided but don’t get any capital gain on their home. I don’t think that is very fair.

One of the things I noticed as CEO of Manor Group was the

number of people who wanted to move into one of our units or apartments, but who couldn’t afford to leave the village that they were currently living in. They were trapped in a sort of financial servitude. That was a huge wake up call for me. So, I asked myself:

“Can a retirement village be developed profitably without taking the resident’s capital gain?“

The answer was yes, and so that’s what I did. Kempton Park Village was registered in 2011. Roseland Park was started a few years later and Woodcroft Estate in 2016.

FINDING PURPOSE THROUGH ADVERSITY

people who have suffered cancer know, or those that have supported someone with cancer know, the treatment is just the beginning of the journey. Chemotherapy doesn’t build people up, it breaks them down – ravaging the body to get the cancer. In many ways, the hardest and longest part of the journey is what comes after the chemo and radiation stops. The start of a long road back to wellness.

“I came from a pharmaceutical background, so I knew the power of modern drugs. But there was a point where chemicals weren’t enough, and my recovery stalled. At that point, I knew I needed to try to use the power of nature to help me find my way back to wellness. But getting good information and support on my journey was nearly impossible. I spent years studying options and learning about what was available to me.”

JESSIE Shi is on a mission to change wellness in New Zealand forever. That sounds like a lofty ambition, but it’s one that comes from a commitment ignited by adversity. Jessie was only thirty years old when she heard the news no one at any age wants to hear.

In Jessie’s words, “Everything was going fine. I was six months pregnant, happily married, healthy, and excited about what my future might hold. Then everything changed in an instant. I went in for my six-month scan and noticed the doctor’s response was off. They suddenly looked worried, and I immediately started to get a dreadful feeling about my baby. Was she okay? The thoughts were frankly terrifying. My doctor assured me my baby was doing okay, but they wanted to do some more tests. Two hours later, a nightmare I could never imagine had been realised. The doctors had discovered a

tumour bigger than my baby’s head around my uterus.”

Jessie’s journey then took an unimaginable turn. She had emergency surgery to save her baby and remove a cancerous tumour. She then had to undergo many months of debilitating treatment at a time when she should have been developing a healthy bond with her daughter.

Jessie had to give most of her energy to make sure she could be around to see her grow and develop as a person. But, as most

a family organise some meals for their mum because they were concerned that she may not be eating well... they didn’t know this for sure, but the fridge never had much in it. They decided to put three meals in her fridge each week and then see if they were still there at the end of the week. SIR MURRAY HALBERG (1933- 2022): “CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.”

the mounting threshold of fatigue. Follow the leader. Put off the evil moment, and keep faith in a last lap sprint, and the weariness of others. An emotional furnace, with the runners in a nervous lather of indecision.

But one runner in black had already made his decision, as he marshalled his killer instinct. For Halberg the evil moment could wait no longer. Suddenly he detonated some internal fireworks. Against all traditions of the event, Halberg flicked a switch marked willpower and swiftly broke into a much higher cadence. He had figured he would make his break when the knife was sharpest. When the Germans and the Pole had their dithering doubts.

Halberg came from behind, moved out a lap and a half and into the position of front runner. The lap took but 61 seconds of the Omega Swiss timers, when the average time of the preceding laps were churned out in around 66 seconds.

The author, Vern Walker, was a nationally-ranked distance runner, and competed against Murray Halberg on numerous occasions.

MURRAY Halberg’s performances as the world’s leading distance runner were enhanced by a brand of savage determination. This was most graphically demonstrated when he won the 5000 metres event at the 1960 Olympic Games held in Rome.

5.10pm, Friday 2 September: The twelve finalists heard the call: “Ai vostri posti.” “On your marks.” Facing Halberg were competitors from Poland, Australia, Kenya, France, Italy, Hungary, Russia, and three runners from Germany. Twelve and a half laps of the orange coloured

cinders faced the field.

The Australian veteran, Dave Power took over the front running. Still, Halberg lurked in twelfth spot. Continually the file of runners in front of him stretched and shrank as they surged. Then the East German, Hans Grodotski put his foot down and sharpened the pace. A beautifully smooth runner with his blonded hair flopping up and down to his rhythmic flow.

There then came a phase of deliberation. With three laps still to run, it was too far from the finish to try and make a break on the field. A stanza in the 5,000 metres when any decisive tactical bursts were too challenging to even contemplate, since the brain was being sand-papered away due to

The field failed to respond and Halberg had surprisingly put a precious 25 metres between him and the three runners chasing him. Only Grodotski reacted and set out to chase the New Zealander, with the slender shoulders and powerful thighs.

For the group of Kiwi track fans seated near the 200 metres mark the next two minutes were a nervous ordeal as they screamed their encouragement and tried to fortify their hopes. On the other hand, thousands of spectators in the vast open bowl of the Stadio Olimpico were voicing their doubts: “Does that skinny guy in black know what he is doing? Has he miscounted the laps?” As Halberg desperately strove to maintain his precious lead a conversation between two Italians, could have gone something like this: “Gee, Giuseppe, he could be the winner. He seems to have more speed

than Caesar’s sandals” His friend Mario quickly responded: “But he could die like Julius Caesar: suddenly.” Tongue-in-cheek though this may be, it did turn out to be a gladiatorial contest.

If on lap ten, Halberg looked a world-beater, the final two laps would prise open a crack of fallibility as Grodotski took off in his quest to catch Halberg. In front of the German was a gap of around 12 metres. It was now a two man contest for the gold medal as 70,000 spectators roared their encouragement. The blocks of East Germans howled out in unison: GRO-DOT-SKI, GRO-DOT-SKI, GRODOT-SKI.

Ominously, Halberg’s eleventh lap took 65.5 seconds. He was slowing and Grodotski was ever so slowly gaining. Normally the lead runner can hear the rasp of the footfalls of the chasing runner upon the cinders. But the stadium was in an

uproar, and Halberg could not hear the chasing German. So on every bend Halberg snatched a quick left-hand backward glance to see where the German was. This may well have translated to the German that Halberg was now having his own doubts.

Down the straight to the bell. Grodotski, the hunter was now inexorably chasing down Halberg, the hunted. By now the lifting muscles of Halberg’s thighs must have seemed to be as heavy as grand pianos. Each stride must have seemed like an expedition. Down the back straight with the German still gaining, gaining, gaining. Halberg’s face was now salt-white against the black of his uniform. Into the final straight and Grodotski was now only nine metres away. But finally, for Halberg eight metres was just enough. The gold medal was his. Fast forward to today. Halberg’s feats of athleticism are perpetuated in the recently completed Murray Halberg Retirement Village, located in Lynfield, Auckland. In the public areas of this village are many large photographs depicting him, as we all recall him: racing and beating the opposition. 

INFLATION HURTING RETIREES ON FIXED INCOMES

IN June 2022 the Massey University Fin-Ed Centre released its Annual Update to the New Zealand Retirement Expenditure Guidelines. The Centre aims to empower New Zealanders to make more financially savvy decisions – giving people the tools they need for the life-long process of managing their finances.

The New Zealand Retirement Expenditure Guidelines – as at 30 June 2022 – are prepared from Statistics New Zealand’s triennial 2018/19 Household Economic Survey for the year ended 30 June 2019.

The June Update noted that current high inflation particularly concerns Kiwis in or near retirement, eroding purchasing power and reducing the value of their investments.

The Update commented that interest rate increases resulting from attempts by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and other central banks globally to combat inflation, may negatively impact the value of fixed income investments held in KiwiSaver and other managed funds. This means, KiwiSaver members are seeing their KiwiSaver account balances drop.

Retirees are likely to have a greater proportion of fixed income investments in their portfolios, due to the lower volatility of this asset class, which is preferred for those at this life stage.

The Update notes the main contributors to continued cost

increases for retirees for the twelve months ended 30 June 2022 were transport (with inflation of 14.5%), housing and household utilities (rising 9.1%), and food (up 6.5%).

Inflation is at levels last seen in the early 1990s. Long-term bond rates of 4% suggest investment values will continue to be eroded for some time, which may encourage diligent investors to make their nest egg work harder.

going city is off the beaten track with a reputation for tropical cyclones and for having more lighting strikes than anywhere else in the world. It’s also a city that has been destroyed twice. The first occasion was during WW2 when the Japanese carried out eightytwo bomb raids but it was Xmas day in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy struck devastating 90% of the entire buildings. Sixty-six people lost their lives with forty-six-thousand airlifted to the south. Forty-nine-years on Cyclone Tracey is still the worst natural disaster in Australia’s living memory.

Perhaps the cyclone did the community a favour for the population returned three years later to a city rebuilt from rubble. Darwin today is vibrant, modern, clean and well laid out with wide open avenues, lush tropical vegetation of bougainvillea, frangipani, hibiscus and coconut palms and state-of-the-art architecture. Darwin continues to prosper with a number of new 5-star hotels, apartments and waterfront developments.

A visit to Darwin would not be complete without a visit to Kakadu National Park. It’s the largest National Park in Australia and without doubt the biggest attraction by far for the many tourists that visit Darwin each year. There are plenty of boat tours that will take you to the south of Alligator River,

to the Yellow Water River Billabong or a sailing boat to the north of Alligator River where you can to fish for barramundi. Of course you will see lots of crocodiles “salties to the locals” – an amazing experiences not to be missed!

Further East across the Alligator River lies the vast expanse of Arnhem which is owned and inhabited by the Aborigines and accessible only by permit. Kakadu National Park has World heritage status and is one of the most prominent National parks in Australia. To do justice to Kakadu allow at least three days. Its spread over twenty-thousand square

kilometres and is the traditional land of the Aboriginal clans.

Kakadu is also home to a thousand plants, hundreds of bird species and countless varieties of frogs, reptiles, mammals and fish that have been identified here. But much of Kakadu’s beauty lies in the rivers, billabongs, waterfalls and gorges. The Aborigines have lived here for over fifty-thousandyears and life goes on largely unchanged and uninterrupted as their traditions continue unchallenged by modern living. If you need a tangible reminder of the Aborigine’s presence the park also protects one of the finest and most extensive collections of rock art in the world. One of our greatest outback experiences was a visit to Ubirr to sight Aborigine rock paintings that are thousands of years old.

If time is not your enemy and you have a 4WD, another place to visit is Jim Jim Falls, a hugely spectacular waterfall that plunges 300 meters to the ground. The best time is during the rainy season although bear in mind the roads can be impassable.

There are also day tours by coach to Mary River, Yellow Water and Nourlangie Rock. Alternatively if you have no budget restraints a thirty-minute helicopter flight will provide a brief but enlightening introduction to this stunning area. One of the best places to stay is at the Crocodile Hotel. Famous for its design as it is set out in the shape of a crocodile. During one of our full day tours we sighted water buffalo, fruit bats and water lilies and if you have never seen crocodiles in the wild you are guaranteed to see them here basking in the sun along the river’s edge. If you’re really diligent the occasional pair of steel piercing eyes can be seen protruding just above the water line waiting patiently for their prey.

attractions like Wildlife Park set in four-hundred-and-fifty-hectares of natural bushland. Not to be missed is the jumping crocodile tour home for scores of crocodiles that launch themselves out of the water to be fed by rangers.

As a standalone destination Darwin itself has plenty to offer. Mindi Beach Markets is transformed into a bustling colourful meeting

place from April to October on Thursday nights. On offer are arts and crafts, free entertainment and ethnic cuisine. The Wharf Precinct is in the heart of Darwin’s CBD where you can experience some of the city’s best eats and drinks. Other local sights include Parliament Building, upmarket dining at the Green Room at the original Darwin Hotel, the Aviation Heritage Centre,

Fanny Bay Gaol built in 1883 to house some of the States notorious criminals, Qantas Guinea Airways Hanger which was used for the first air service out of Darwin and Admiralty House home to Char Restaurant and the Darwin Club.

As a holiday destination we found Northern Territory to be something quite special. Although isolated it’s a location that has not been surpassed anywhere else that we know of. In all a truly wonderful experience that is just too good to be true. We plan to make another visit before it becomes too popular! 

The Combined Probus Club of Ormiston threw a joint celebration for Probus Day and the Club’s 10th Anniversary, themed as a Mad Hatter Tea Party. POP QUIZ AT SUNNY LUNCH

Rather than attempting a whole-Club party around the busy, silly season, Karori Probus Club held a Spring lunch, in place of their October meeting. Even the weather played its part and the sun shone for the first time in several days. Each member was greeted with a free drink voucher and a beautiful lunch spread, catered by Elaine.

President Murray welcomed 62 members and guests, and Melvina surprised the crowd with a quiz – which was hard enough that no table got 100%. Members reported feeling very confident before the quiz… but much less so during. It was a great gathering to mix and mingle and, if the sounds of laughter and chatter were any indication, the afternoon was a great success!

At Christmas time, The Probus Club of Malvern (Combined) based in Selwyn, Canterbury, catered for around 100 members and visitors with a Christmas Morning tea. The massive crowd were

All 3 ladies were foundation members when the Club was established in 1995 and are all still active participants, more than 27 years later. Their Club paid tribute to the dedication, involvement and continued exuberance of the ladies.

entertained by a local Ukeleleplaying group of singers, who lead the group in some well-known songs and a few Christmas Carols. Afterwards, a young dance troupe put on a display of their amazing ability and agility, to the astonishment of the captivated crowd.

With great food and amazing entertainment, a good time was had by all!

REBUILDING HISTORY THROUGH COMMUNITY COLLABORATION

Dunedin North Mens Probus Club opened up their Club meeting to historically-minded locals in order to share information, documents and photos of the history of North-East Valley, Dunedin. Representatives from Heritage New Zealand presented some historical photos and discussed the development of the area over the last 160+ years. Around 50 members of the public attended, some bringing their own historical documents, stories and photos to share with Heritage New Zealand. It was such a success, that follow-up events have been slated for this year.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS TO SERVE ON THE PSPL BOARD FROM AUGUST 2023 TO AUGUST 2026

Nominations are open for Probus Club members to serve on the PSPL Board as Representative Member/Directors from the following areas of selection:

* New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory

* Western Australia

* New Zealand

Both male and female Probians who have business experience in finance, communications, or marketing as a Public Company Director are encouraged to consider nomination by their Probus Club.

These are volunteer positions which normally require travel to Sydney on a quarterly basis. However, meetings are currently being held via technological means with the exception of the Annual General Meeting.

Nominations are open for two Probus Club members from each of the following areas of selection to serve on the Nominating Selection Committees (NSCs):

The role of the Nominating Selection Committee is to assess all eligible nominations from Probus Club members wishing to serve on the PSPL Board.

Nominations for the PSPL Board and the Nominating Selection Committees must be lodged with PSPL by 30 April 2023.

These interviews will be conducted by the NSCs in May 2023 via technological means.
