Can you share some insight into the brand's origins?
Childhood experiences significantly influence the adults we become, with home environments playing a crucial role in children's emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development. At Smartsters, we questioned why indoor spaces weren't better designed to encapsulate the essence of childhood. To find answers to the questions we had, we consulted children, parents, child development experts, and designers. We explored, questioned, refined our ideas, and pushed design boundaries until Smartsters came to life.
What are the primary inspirations behind your designs?
Featuring over 150 products in furniture
and decor exclusively for children's spaces in Indian homes, Smartsters adopted a fresh approach that combines global standards in ergonomics, design, and children’s engagement. Our design team collaborates with child development experts and parents, ensuring that each design contributes to the holistic development of the children using them.
Tell us a few things that we would always find in your carry-on luggage?
When I travel, I prefer to keep my carry-on luggage as light as possible so it's convenient and quick to pass through airports. I always carry mobile charging devices with me and a good pair of headphones. If I travel internationally on a long-haul flight, I carry a spare change of
clothes which I change into in-between flights.
What role does travel play in your life?
Travel shapes our vision of the world. It opens our minds to new foods, architecture, and people. Travel, therefore, plays an important role in my life and it makes me grateful for this world of ours.

INDIGO AIRLINES, HAS con rmed and opened reservations for ights between Bhubaneswar and Dubai. e maiden international ight from Bhubaneswar took o from Biju Patnaik International Airport on May 15. Indigo says it is working in close collaboration with the Odisha government to reconnect Bhubaneswar to international destinations. VISA APPLICATIONS FROM Mumbai recovered close to the pre-pandemic levels in 2022 driven by pent-up demand, opening of international borders, and eased Covid-related protocols. According to VFS Global, the visa application volume from Mumbai reached 73 per cent of the 2019 pre-pandemic levels in 2022 and registered a 177 per cent growth when compared to 2021. Travel might have slowed down for passengers in the last few years, but development on airport infrastructure has been full steam ahead
ccording to market research rm GlobalData, there is currently US$700 billion worth of airport construction projects underway around the world. e Asia-Paci c region claims the highest levels of development, with US$240 billion worth of projects, followed by the Middle East and Africa (US$200 billion), the Americas (US$150 billion) and Europe (US$130 billion). Here we look at some major airport upgrades around the globe.
New York’s biggest airport is undergoing a huge revamp totalling US$19 billion that will create four main terminals with a north and south hub. e rst changes were unveiled last year, with British Airways moving into a revamped Terminal 8 alongside American Airlines and launching the co-branded Bridge Bar in the Greenwich Lounge (see businesstraveller.com). T8 will eventually host eight oneworld carriers, with Japan Airlines expected to move this month.
e US$1.5 billion expansion of Terminal 4 is due to be nished this year, and has become the consolidated home for Delta’s operations. A new 1,300 sqm Sky Club on Concourse A
+
will open this summer, followed by an exclusive Delta One Club in 2024 for business class passengers.
Work began on Terminal 6 in February, which will connect seamlessly to the current Terminal 5. Passengers can expect bright and spacious arrivals, local artwork and more than 9,000 sqm of updated shopping and dining options. Advanced technology will update passenger touchpoints, including automated TSA security lanes and biometric controls, plus a new taxi plaza. In addition to JetBlue, the improved terminal will be home to the Lu hansa Group.
Finally, the largest development will be the New Terminal One, worth around US$9.5billion, which will occupy the sites of the current T1 and T2 (to be demolished this year) and former T3. It will include new dining and retail options championing local, female and minority-owned businesses, plus new lounges, indoor green space, public art, entertainment and family-friendly amenities. e arrivals and departures hall, and 14 new gates are expected to open in 2026, with the terminal’s nal nine gates opening in 2030.
e O’Hare 21 initiative is a multibillion-dollar upgrade of the world’s fourth busiest airport that has already seen increased runway capacity and a new automated people
mover completed in 2021. It also includes the US$1 billion expansion and renovation of Terminal 5, which is due to complete this year, with ten new gates, more airline lounge space, improved security, immigration and screening facilities and a new baggage handling system. A new six-storey car park will also be created adjacent to T5, with an expanded curb-side drop o . Improved shopping and dining facilities will feature local favourites such as Butcher and Burger as well as Bar Siena, with mobile ordering and the option of gate-side delivery available throughout the terminal.
Work has also begun on the new O’Hare Global Terminal, a US$2.2 billion facility that will double the size of the current Terminal 2. Passengers can look forward to the co-location of domestic and international arrival gates and a more streamlined approach to airline alliances. ere will also be more public amenities,
a modern baggage system and new immigration and customs facilities. Two satellite concourses, also opening this year, will handle capacity while the new terminal is constructed.

Los Angeles International airport is midway through a major US$14 billion upgrade, which a ects all nine terminals.
Terminals 7 and 8 were upgraded in 2019, providing a fresh home for United Airlines, complete with a new Club lounge plus automated screening lanes, while Terminal 1 was modernised in 2018 and the new Terminal 1.5 opened at the end of 2021.
Still to come is the huge US$5.5 billion Automated People Mover project, due to open in 2024, which will provide ease of movement between terminals and connect to
the regional transport system and a new car rental facility.
Terminals 2 and 3 are also undergoing a US$2.3 billion upgrade, which will replace the T3 concourse with new gates, more seating with charging capabilities, upgraded shopping and dining, and a secure connection to Tom Bradley International terminal.
e new Delta Sky Club at Terminal 3 opened last year, with an indoor/ outdoor bar and upgraded restrooms with shower facilities. Meanwhile, Terminal 4 is being redeveloped by American Airlines to the tune of US$1.5 billion.
Saudi Arabia is ploughing enormous sums of money into a new era of international tourism. To that end, a new mega airport has been proposed for Riyadh. e King Salman International airport will
become one of the largest airports in the world, with a site of 57 sq km that will be built on top of the current King Khalid International airport. It’s worth noting that Saudi Arabia already holds the title of largest airport in the world in terms of overall size, with the 776 sq km King Fahd International in Dammam, 400km east of Riyadh.
e new airport is planned to feature six runways capable of hosting up to 185 million passengers by 2050. Foster + Partners, the architecture rm leading the project design, has dubbed it an “aerotropolis”.
It is scheduled to launch in 2030, with capacity for 120 million passengers in the rst phase and 3.5 million tons of cargo.
Last November, Doha’s Hamad International airport completed the
rst phase of its airport renovation and expansion project. e newly renovated airport can now accommodate 58 million passengers annually and features additional lounges, retail and F&B options, a new transfer hall and a 6,000 sqm indoor garden, the Orchard, that bears some resemblance to Changi’s Jewel. e Oryx Garden Hotel has opened in the north plaza, with 100 rooms, alongside four new lounges, including the Al Mourjan Business Lounge – e Garden; Gold and Platinum lounge; Oryx Lounge and Al Maha Lounge. e second phase of the airport’s expansion will commence this year and increase capacity to over 70 million passengers. It will also involve the construction of two new concourses.
e New Central Polish Airport (also Solidarity Transport Hub, or Centralny Port Komunikacyjny CPK in Polish) is one of the largest infrastructure projects currently being planned in Europe, with a
total investment of around US$8 billion. While still in the design stage, the mega air-road-rail transit hub is expected to be complete by 2028 and will be located 45km west of central Warsaw. Initially the new airport will be expected to handle up to 40 million passengers, rising to 100 million on completion, and connected by high-speed rail to the capital and other major cities.
Finavia has almost completed an extensive €1 billion upgrade of Helsinki Airport that began in 2014. e terminal has been expanded by 45 per cent, with a focus on keeping everything easily accessible. Departures has been given a new Finnish design with a wooden ceiling and large windows, while next-generation technology at security means there is no need to remove electronics or liquids from bags for scanning. New shops featuring popular Finnish brands from Moomins to Marimekko have opened, with a new food court in arrivals, and another opening in the gate area this summer. A new baggage hall will also be completed this summer with more carousels.
Consistently voted as one of the best airports in the world, Singapore’s Changi airport is set to almost double in size with the construction of its Terminal 5 project. e new terminal, due to be completed in the mid 2030s, will be capable of handling 50 million
passengers a year (the current four terminals combined have a capacity for about 80 million). e airport will focus on contactless technology and enhanced ventilation, plus areas that can be used for testing operations or the segregation of high-risk passengers.
Sustainability will also play a major role in its design, with solar panels, district cooling systems and thermal energy storage, plus the capability to deploy sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). WHAT’S IT LIKE The property is a melting pot of holistic wellbeing and enriching amenities. Step into a rejuvenating environment where Westin's Six Pillars of WellBeing empowers each experience and allows guests to be the best version of themselves. I felt a strong feeling of ‘home away from home’ during my stay at the property. Also, a noteworthy feature is that the hotel is pet friendly and welcomes trained pets.
WHERE IS IT A stone's throw away from the city centre and other popular attractions such as the Old Opera House, The Westin Grand Frankfurt is perfect for both business and leisure travellers. Furthermore, the hotel provides easy access to the rest of the city as public transport is merely a 100 metres away and Frankfurt Main Station is 1.5 kilometres.
ROOMS One can indulge in the epitome of luxury in one of the 372 calming guest rooms and suites. Newly renovated, each room is defined by features that reference
the destination’s history and green spaces, merging functionality with daylight. I stayed in the Junior Suite, a 44 sqm opulent break away from reality. The highlight of the room was the iconic king size Heavenly Bed which ensures a night of peaceful sleep. The suite o ers a separate living room with a cozy seating area, a dining table, a separate guest toilet as well as a 55 inches TV. The suite features a laptop safe, an USB port right next to the bed, co ee machine, small fridge, iron and ironing board as well as full-length blackout curtains for uninterrupted sleep. The hotel o ers 17 suites in four di erent categories.
FOOD AND DRINK The five star hotel o ers an enthralling selection of restaurants and bars. One can begin their day with a breakfast bu et at the restaurant Motions On o er is a decadent spread ranging from fresh fruits, cereals, finest jam to Bavarian veal sausages and delicious co ee specialties. I indulged in some wholesome oats porridge, an egg white omelette and a comforting cup of hot chocolate. Other F&B outlets at the hotel include Grab & Go, perfect for a quick co ee and snack before heading out to explore the city. In the Atrium, the Main Tapas Lounge surprises with its new design and great hospitality. WHAT’S IT LIKE When I entered the lobby of the hotel, I was instantly surrounded by the comforting and charming touches that make a world of di erence and was immediately greeted by the friendly sta . WHERE IS IT Located on the fringe of Orchard Road, the hotel is a peaceful respite from the bustling world-renowned shopping street while remaining steps away from shopping malls. It is also conveniently located around public transportation and I could get around the city with ease.
ROOMS Soothing colour palettes incorporating Voco’s signature pink and
soothing greys set the backdrop for the new Deluxe Rooms with Club Access. The bold and functional rooms include an open wardrobe design, which allows more space and gave the room a slick, modern feel, whilst floor-to-ceiling windows flooded the room with natural light. In line with the hotel’s commitment to sustainability, guests can relax on untucked high-quality bedding made from 100% recycled materials, flu y bathrobes and slippers, and sustainable bathroom amenities from Apotheke. The hotel has 423 guestrooms and I stayed in the Deluxe club room which was 32 sqm in size and overlooked the spectacular boulevard.
FOOD AND DRINK I had a long and busy day ahead of me with a possibility of
only a quick bite for lunch, so I chose to have a filling breakfast to tide me through the day. I breakfasted on an egg white omelette with sourdough bread, a bowl of fresh-cut fruits and a cappuccino at the Opus Grill and Bar. In the evening when I got back to the hotel, I relaxed in the club lounge with red wine and canapes before retiring for the night.

FOOD AND DRINK While I normally choose to start my day with a light breakfast, the aromas wafting through the terrace of the all-day dining restaurant, the Larder, which o ers the signature super breakfast bu et was hard to resist. I enjoyed a large bowl of oatmeal porridge, followed by fried eggs sunny side up, freshly cut fruit and a cappuccino to wash it down. In the evening I had a few drinks and starters at BAI Bar & Terrace which has an urban sports bar ambience, where I could sit back and unwind on the plush sofas facing the Canal. In addition to this, guests can soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the lobby area or sit back and relax in The Bake House. Another great option is The Shelf Pool

The Aubrey was created to exude a 'home-away-from-home' feeling for local Londoners and global guests alike. The eccentric Japanese izakaya experience is one I highly looked forward to during my stay at the opulent property. I indulged myself and headed there to experience their weekend brunch menu. As soon as I entered the establishment , I felt a comforting feeling enveloping me as the warmly lit interiors and vintage-style furniture came together beautifully to create the perfect ambience to unwind in. I began my meal with a 12-piece sushi and sashimi platter, which was truly a delightfully ceremonious beginning to the courses that followed it. The sushi is prepared in the Edomae style, using rice sourced from Hokkaido, and red vinegar made from ginjo sake lees. The technique used to assemble the delicacy highlights the natural flavours of the fish. I followed this up with a six-piece tempura platter, which represented everything a perfect tempura should be- light, airy and crispy. Already thoroughly impressed with my appetisers, I chose a main course that I was sure would only continue this streak of culinary excellence. The Sustainable Miso Black
Cod was rich in umami and something that lingered on my tastebuds for long after the meal! I paired my meal with a refreshing Gin and Tonic, a simple combination but done extremely well as The Aubrey proudly believes good drinks lie at the heart of this Izakaya.

One can experience the energy of a night out in Ginza through exceptional drinks o ered at the distinctive bar, and London’s first-ever omakase cocktail experience. Restaurant am Steinplatz is a home kitchen-style restaurant where dishes are created using a range of seasonal and regional ingredients. The head chef Oliver Fritz and his team create innovative dishes inspired by natural flavours. After a long day of meetings, I was looking forward to a hearty meal and an evening tipple. The ambience of the restaurant creates a cocoon of comfort which was highly desired as I was looking for a calm dinner.
I was told that the restaurant features an incredible wine selection, and I can happily confirm this is true. As I relished my glass of German red wine, my first plate was brought to me- a scrumptious morel tart. I chose the trout for my main and it was cooked to perfection. The philosophy of Oliver Fritz and his team is to install a powerful play of aromas on every plate, in which all unnecessary elements that take away from the authentic flavours of the dish are omitted. To finish my wholesome meal, I opted for the hazelnut ice cream which was supremely decadent and followed it up with an espresso. The dinner at Restaurant am Steinplatz beautifully tied
up the loose ends of my day and I went back to my room feeling an extreme sense of contentment.
VERDICT A meal at Restaurant am Steinplatz is a calming culinary experience that reminds you of the power that good food has in sparking joy.
