RECOVERY & REHABILITATION
NEVER GIVE UP Lynda has gone from being withdrawn, unable to walk and with limited speech to a confident, happy and physically-active woman.
L
ynda was admitted to Richardson Care four years after sustaining a brain injury. She was wheelchairbound and had been told that it was very unlikely that she would be able to walk again. Because of her brain injury, Lynda had little insight into her own limitations and needed frequent prompting and encouragement in all aspects of daily living. She also presented with behaviour that challenges. However, she had been an independent young woman with a job, family and friends prior to her brain injury and wanted to be as independent as possible and was determined to walk again. Lynda’s care plan included psychology input combined with Positive Behaviour Support to aid her emotional wellbeing and develop coping strategies to reduce incidents of challenging behaviour. She had regular physiotherapy sessions to increase her strength, balance, co-ordination and
flexibility. In addition, social and community activities helped to build Lynda’s confidence, develop positive relationships and increase independence. After four years at Richardson Care, Lynda was able to walk independently with no aids. She continues to get fitter and stronger and can now walk easily and enjoy an active life. Her physical ability has also helped her mental well-being and her cognitive abilities continue to improve.
Lynda is the prime example of how someone with a brain injury can still make considerable improvements given the right environment and therapy approach Richardson Care has a portfolio of six specialist residential care homes in Northampton. It caters for adults with complex needs and offers a range of services including shortterm and long-term rehabilitation and a home for life. ■
