Romantic Holiday Getaways

Fall in love on a holiday trip - without falling into debt

Making

the decision to go on a holiday getaway with your honey is easy, but choosing a destination that is romantic yet budget friendly can be a challenge. Whether it be by train, plane or automobile, we have compiled a list of getaways that are reasonably priced and offer an array of accommodations and activities to do with your partner. From escaping frigid temps to frolicking in the sun - to embracing the cold, this list offers holiday getaway ideas that will appeal to a wide variety of couples.

Nashville, TN seems to be the new popular place to go for those living in the Midwest because it brims with excellent food, music and entertainment. You can let the sparks fly when you lead your partner on the dance floor at one of the many musical venues. It is an affordable trip that is easy to do in a weekend or an extended weekend. Flights are generally reasonable, but if you are not into flying, it’s only a 14 hour drive which can easily be done in one day when there are two drivers.

Omaha, NE is a hop skip and a jump away from Sioux Falls and has generous offerings when it comes to shopping, food and entertainment. Spending time in The Old Market is a must if you choose Omaha as your destination. Located downtown, The Old Market offers an abundance of restaurants, art galleries and upscale shopping. This intimate area of downtown definitely exudes romantic vibes. Shopping on your wish list? There are several shopping centers and an outlet mall in Gretna, NE which is just outside of Omaha. Omaha also has several venues for music and theatre if a show is in your getaway dream.

Duluth, MN will likely become an annual holiday tradition once you experience it. Nestled in the Northern Region of Minnesota the landscape is simply breathtaking. Duluth celebrates the beginning of each holiday season with a nighttime parade through downtown the Friday before Thanksgiving. The Christmas City Express

12 SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2022
sfw | LIFE

starts at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum and entertains patrons with a reading of the Christmas City Express story followed by a chorus of carolers. After the show, you will board the train for a 30-minute ride up to Lake Superior. While in Duluth you can cuddle in the warm glow of Victorian mansions that are beautifully decorated for the holidays or take in other events that range from comedy reviews and ballet to holiday fairs filled with locally handmade gifts.

Sanibel Island, FL is a secluded yet popular destination making it the perfect place to spend a romantic holiday away. The island has more rental properties than hotels and resorts, so finding affordable accommodations is quite attainable. Sanibel is close to Fort Myers (RSW) airport which hosts several direct flights from Sioux Falls making travel efficient and relatively quick. The vibe on the Island is laid back and beckons its’ visitors to a multitude of restaurants and shops. The beaches of Sanibel are teaming with seashells; it’s what this Island is known for! You can join in practicing the “Sanibel Stoop” which is local lingo for searching for shells.

Sedona, AZ is a marvelous getaway for outdoorsy couples who like to hike. Red Rock State Park is a very popular destination which offers several hiking loops to choose from. If peace and tranquility is more your style, you can stay at one of the many resorts offering spa services. It is a warm and wonderful place to escape some of the harsh winter days in South Dakota. And it is only a short drive from Phoenix which has direct flight connections.

Puerto Rico One major benefit of this island destination is that you don’t need a passport to enjoy the romantic seas and shores of the Caribbean. There are numerous beach front or beach adjacent resorts with countless amenities to choose from. Equally abundant are the dining options. You and your partner can take in the stunning natural wonders which will elicit romantic feelings while experiencing the beauty that Puerto Rico has to offer. While this vacation will likely be on the higher end of the budget the memories you make will surely make this a holiday to remember. n

Savvy Family Fun

Savvy = having or showing perception, comprehension, or shrewdness, especially in practical matters.

Finding fun fall activities to do with your family need not be expensive and you don’t need to travel far! There are countless opportunities in and around the Sioux Falls area that will excite and entertain the entire family on a savvy budget.

Staying active in the colder months can be difficult, especially living in South Dakota. However, for those wanting to enjoy the outdoors while keeping costs relatively low, taking on the challenge of a corn maze is a great option. There are corn mazes at Jellystone Park in Sioux Falls and the Heartland Country Corn Maze in Harrisburg. Both mazes are open through late October.

The Fall Festival at the Country Apple Orchard in Harrisburg is also a super family excursion. Along with another corn maze to explore, they also have giant jumping pillows, zip lines, a giant hay bale maze, kiddie train rides, a petting zoo, corn pit, apple cannon range, live music, and more. If you’re not interested in the Fall Festival, you can always just visit the apple orchard to pick apples and pumpkins as a family. You can visit the Country Apple Orchard and Fall Festival every weekend from September through October.

There are also incredibly amazing views to seek out and appreciate on hiking trails throughout the Sioux Empire. Take the family to

Good Earth State Park, Newton Hills State Park, Beaver Creek Nature Area, or Great Bear Recreation Park for fresh air, exercise, and beautiful scenery. Within the city limits of Sioux Falls, your family can spend an entire day visiting the Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History. It is open year-round and provides the opportunity to see and learn about both living and mounted animals from anteaters to zebras from around the world.

If you’re hoping to stay indoors and get some holiday shopping done, Junkin’ Market Days is the event for your family. Founded in 2021, Junkin’ Market Days is a new shopping market for Sioux Falls happening on October 21-22 at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds Expo Building. There will be a number of vendors selling repurposed, rustic, shabby chic, farmhouse, vintage, and one-of-a-kind finds. Attendees can purchase a variety of products, including jewelry, home décor, furniture, gourmet foods, and so much more.

Family activities at zero cost are as close as stepping outside your front door. Play basketball in the driveway or any sport your family loves to play together. Take advantage of our beautiful fall and rake the leaves into a big pile and take turns jumping in. If there’s snow on the ground, make snowmen or find a nearby hill to go sledding.

Fall activities to do as a family just require a little savvy creativity and planning - then jump into the season and have fun! n

MEADOW BARN

For engaged couples looking to tie the knot in the next year or two, booking the venue is one of the most important tasks to check off the list. Two locations couples should definitely consider are The Meadow Barn and The Veranda by Meadow Barn, located right in the Country Apple Orchards in Harrisburg, South Dakota.

In 2016, Greg and Katie Jones opened The Meadow Barn after noticing the lack of unique wedding venues in the area. Together, the Jones’ have over 30 years of experience in special events and hospitality.

Katie says, “What is special about The Meadow Barn –besides the location and all-inclusive amenities – is the fact that it’s a family-run business.”

“This is what supports my family,” Katie said. “It’s important for us to provide a beautiful venue for every wedding and a great experience for every guest.”

The Meadow Barn is right in the Country Apple Orchards, which Katie says offers unlimited photo opportunities and is something many wedding photographers have complimented them on. The venue is private, provides plenty of space for the bridal party to get ready and relax, and once the party starts, a full service bar is available for the reception.

The bride and groom are also able to choose their own vendors, which Katie shares is a big plus if you have specific vendors in mind when planning for the big day.

In 2019, the Jones unveiled another beautiful venue option called The Veranda, located right next to The Meadow Barn. The Veranda is also a barn, but a slightly different style. It’s also a bit smaller, offering a more intimate setting.

Katie explains that prime wedding season is May

are still some great 2023 dates available and The Meadow Barn and The Veranda are already booking for 2024. For couples that are interested, they can get a private tour of the venues and determine if it will be the right fit for their special day.

A big plus when choosing The Meadow Barn or The Veranda is the high level of customer service the Jones’ provide. Katie says her husband is on the properties

the facilities and any couple that books one of their venues will personally work with the Jones to get every detail ironed out before their wedding.

Incredibly soft, silky, and sleek tresses

Luxurious

and high-class sleek hair is captivating social media feeds and red-carpet events. Glass hair is the newest trend that leaves hair shiny, glossy, and sleek to the point of being reflective like glass. The best part about it? You can do this all in the comfort of your own home with a few simple products. This step-by-step tutorial is a simple way to transform your hair in the best way possible.

Clean It Up

The first step is to shampoo and condition your hair. Specialists recommend using shine-boosting products, particularly oil based, both in the shower and after. Pro-tip: Add them to your conditioner or apply leave-in conditioner for added shine and moisture.

Protect It

Next, you will want a reliable ‘heat protectant product’ to apply to your hair. This step is extremely important in achieving a sleek and frizz-free look.

Bring the Heat

After your hair is prepped, it is time to style. Flat ironing in ultra-fine sections is the absolute key to creating a high gloss look. Make sure to brush the hair while ironing and pull down on each strand to ensure you are flattening each section.

Lock it Down

For best results, professionals recommend to lock down your look with an anti-frizz hairspray or mist oil. Instead of spraying directly onto your hair, apply it to your hairbrush and evenly brush through the ends for even distribution and to enhance that glamorous, silky finish.

Voila! It’s time to show off your eye-catching, incredibly polished, “high-glassed” hair. n

They even have ‘Gather Boxes’ to help you easily organize photos, slides, and negatives that you want to have archived.   Beyond the obvious benefit of saving space and easily posting or sharing images, archiving also allows you to preserve your family memorabilia virtually forever. The digital files won’t deteriorate and are easily stored in multiple locations.

Within five to10 business days of receiving your memories, Harold’s Photo’s in-house professional archiving team will digitize your memorabilia with expertise and care. You will receive digital files on either a flash drive or a data DVD. Your original images will also be returned at that time.

The Infrared Sauna

A new take on an old form of relaxation

Improving

heart health, soothing sore muscles, finding relaxation and fighting illness are just some of the reasons people are turning to infrared saunas, a trendy spa treatment. But are infrared saunas worth the hype and the cost?

To learn more about this modern twist to a traditional sauna, Tiffany Hansen, owner of 3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio, provides some insights and answers to some common questions people have.

What are infrared saunas, and how do they compare to the “old school” saunas?

Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas don’t use steam. Instead, they create light rays that produce heat. As a result, the body is heated from the inside raising the core body temperature causing you to sweat.

However, like a traditional sauna, there is the “experience” because it produces reactions like those from moderate exercises such as intense sweating, increased heart rate, and burned calories.

Tiffany says infrared saunas are a lot “cooler.”

“When people hear the word “sauna,” they tend to think of steam

saunas. But infrared saunas are so much better because they raise an individual’s core body temperature by three degrees with far less intense heat. They also provide a wide variety of benefits where the “old school’ saunas just heat your skin and make you feel warm.”

What are some quick tips for using infrared saunas?

Tiffany offers these recommendations:

Make sure you don’t eat a big meal before you go in. That way your body isn’t spending the whole session trying to digest that big meal.

If you are comfortable, go nude. It is best to expose as much of your body to infrared heaters as you can.

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after so you are ready to flush toxins and replenish your body afterward.

Are infrared saunas worth trying?

“Absolutely,” says Tiffany. “People feel better after using them because there are so many benefits that will add great value to their life. We have so many people say they have tried it just once and are now in love.” n

FAMILY MATTERS

ONE BUSINESS DISCOVERED SHARED VALUES IN A BANKING PARTNERSHIP

If you ask Laurie Smith about her business, you’ll hear about her family, and vice versa. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

When her father, Ed Arshem, and his business partners founded TLC Advantage, a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) in the mid-90s, Laurie Smith could not have imagined the journey that was awaiting her. Following a college internship working alongside her father, she moved back to Sioux Falls after graduating and started working full-time for TLC. It was also through her work that she met her husband Les, VP of Finance at RAS, an affiliate of TLC. Once her father retired in 2016, Laurie then became President & CEO.

Looking back over a quarter of a century working in the PPO business, Laurie has witnessed many changes. And when the pandemic hit - like many organizations - TLC moved to working remotely. She realized that moving to a remote environment also highlighted the need to become more automated with the company’s banking needs while still feeling connected and taken care of. “Throughout all my years with TLC, the one constant has been our focus on providing best-in-class customer service and on developing strong business relationships. I found that relationship with American Bank & Trust and Julie Nelson,” she said.

Laurie moved both her business and personal banking to American Bank and Trust and credits that strong relationship for a successful transition. “Julie has been instrumental in making that change seamless. She bent over backward to make the transition easy and made sure that everything could be accomplished with minimal impact to my work schedule. She also worked directly with my staff to get their questions answered and bring all systems operational with little downtime.”

HOW
advertorial

Now, after converting to a ‘work from home’ model and finding the right banking partner, Laurie says that family mentality, the value of relationships, and surrounding yourself with the right people have been more important than ever. “While I miss face-to-face time with my team, we have adapted and continue to enjoy regularly scheduled ‘coffee talks’ that give us a chance to connect through virtual meetings that help us build relationships that extend beyond work priorities. I feel fortunate to have an amazing group of people to work with and know that TLC would not enjoy the success that it does without their hard work and talent.”

It was important to Laurie that her banking partner share those same values she had cultivated in her own business, and she’s confident she made the right choice. “American Bank and Trust treat customers like family, often sending a card or cupcake tokens to celebrate a birthday, or by just checking in to see how you’re doing.” And that ‘family mindset’ means a lot. Laurie and Les have two children - Ian (17) and Ella (13), and a dog, Lucy. “Julie has fostered a connection with our family that has become more than just a banking relationship, now it is a friendship - a family,” said Smith.

Healthy Eating Plans

When

it comes to different eating plans there are many different options. Some plans are popularized as ‘trends’ with all the buzz words: low carb, keto, low fat, carb cycling, vegan, Mediterranean, plant based, vegetarian, DASH, flexitarian and intermittent fasting, just to name a few. Overwhelming? It certainly can be! I’ll break down a couple of these eating plans that have merit and deserve consideration when it comes to a healthy lifestyle, standing the test of time.

Carb Cycling is a form of diet variation that’s gained more popularity recently. This is an eating plan in which carbohydrate consumption varies daily or weekly (see chart to the left). This way of eating can be very beneficial for many different reasons: whether it’s body composition (like fat loss), or different training routines and training for special events (endurance, body building, etc). Cycling carbs helps the body to be able to switch from burning carbs to burning fat, depending on what has been consumed, what is readily available and what type of storage supply (like fat) that body can utilize for energy. This is an advanced diet strategy that coincides with training and it’s helpful to consult a nutritionist or nutrition coach to help you specifically with your needs and goals.

28 SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2022 sfw | FOODIE

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that alternates between periods of fasting and eating. It’s an ancient practice, but only recently has gained popularity in terms of health benefits. There are no specific foods to eat or avoid, but rather the timing of when to eat is restricted. There are many health benefits from weight loss, to gut health benefits, and autophagy (when old cells are cleared so new healthy ones can be built). More and more research is being published weekly on the benefits, but one must use some caution as to not over fast and of course discuss with a doctor whether it is a fit for your lifestyle. There are numerous styles of IF, a daily fast or an occasional fast, all have their place and time and it’s encouraged to switch them up, being careful not to ‘over fast’, again a nutritionist or nutrition coach can offer guidance. Some of the most common intermittent fasting methods are as follows:

an 8 hr window

as: 12-8pm) to eat, fast the other

nonconsecutive days, consume 500 calories; eat normal the other 5 days

Eat Stop Eat

OMAD

hour fast once or twice a week

Only one meal is consumed each day, such as Dinner

GREEN TEA EXTRACT AND RELAXATION FORMULA

Green tea has been used for thousands of years in China and Japan for its many health benefits. Green tea contains components called catechins, which are naturally occurring antioxidants. These beneficial antioxidants can be extracted into a compound called EGCg, which is found in many green tea extract products. Green Tea-70 is a product that contains a high concentration of EGCg.

Choosing a healthy eating plan that’s maintainable is not a one-size-fits-all. Each person is unique with their goals and nutritional needs, but these two methods are great places to start. Both IF and Carb Cycling are tried and true eating plans with many health benefits. There’s a time and place for each, it comes down to learning how these can work for you! n

All information presented and written within this publication is intended for informational purposes only. Ashley Sornsin is not a certified nutritionist or registered dietitian and any nutritional information should only be used as a general guideline. What are the health benefits of green tea extract? As an antioxidant, it reduces the formation of harmful free radicals in the body. Reducing free radical formation protects cells from damage and reduces inflammation. Some studies have shown that green tea extract can help reduce blood pressure and prevent fat buildup in the blood. By protecting cells in the brain from oxidative stress, it may also help to prevent brain damage and enhance brain function. When taken in recommended amounts, green tea extract is a good natural option that can help to improve your health in many ways!

Relaxation Formula is also on sale! This is an all-natural approach to facilitate physical and mental relaxation. It is a synergistic herbal blend known for a calming effect without causing drowsiness.

In the Kitchen: Fresh Take on Midcentury Modern

Averysleek and stylish kitchen design trend is making a strong comeback. Midcentury Modern, also known as MCM, is a style that originally became popular in the middle of the 20th century. This era embraced sensible design no longer included intricate ornamental details that were so popular pre-WW2. If you’re craving a fresh, new, modern kitchen, with simple clean lines, then Midcentury Modern might be the designer look you want to create.

A Midcentury Modern kitchen tends to have natural real wood cabinets with contrasting black accents. Walnut and teak are very popular wood choices used in MCM kitchens. Incorporating white countertops and a white backsplash will help keep the space from becoming dark and dreary. Cabinet door styles are usually one-piece flat slabs with no applied moldings or added details. Hardware is also very simple with straight lines. To stay true to MCM style, you’ll want to avoid adding unnecessary elaborate details.

According to Shelly Buxton, a designer from Sioux Falls Kitchen and Bath, “Midcentury style is modern, but stained instead of painted. Very clean lines and doing either full overlay or frameless

cabinets for that sleeker clean look.” Buxton also explains, “This style includes open spaces, floor-to-ceiling glass, and monotone interiors with a minimalist design where everything has a purpose and there is not a lot of clutter.”

Sue Uken, a gallery consultant from Ferguson, shared that “Midcentury Modern is all about function and style, so you should select items that serve both purposes. Keep faucet designs simple yet stylish, with an emphasis on functionality. The overall feel should be clean, geometrical, and sleek when planning the layout. Pendant lights and modern chandeliers fit perfectly into this design and can often become the centerpiece of your room. When creating a glamorous MCM space, mixed metals are truly a staple of this look, specifically gold.”

Last but not least, don’t forget to bring the outdoors into your Midcentury Modern kitchen by adding plants to the space. Plants work in every style of kitchen, but they will especially make your MCM kitchen feel cozier and down to earth. A well-designed Midcentury Modern kitchen will be both warm and inviting. When done properly, the result will be a timeless look that will never go out of style. n

PROVEN, NATURAL PAIN RELIEF

Discover the Relaxing, Soothing and Healing Heat at 3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio

If you suffer from chronic pain, you already know the bitter cold that our harsh South Dakota winters deliver can make this condition even worse. And with nothing but months of cold in the forecast, there’s never been a better time to visit 3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio to tap into your body’s natural healing ability and a healthier, happier you.

If you’ve never heard of infrared light therapy and how it can help you, now’s the time to know more. According to Brent A. Bauer, M.D. at mayoclinic.org, “Several studies have looked at using infrared saunas in the treatment of chronic health problems, such as high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, dementia and Alzheimer›s disease, headache, type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, and found some evidence of benefit.”

Infrared sessions have been proven to reduce muscle spasms and boost your body’s natural healing power without the help of traditional medications. The light therapy from an infrared sauna not only works to penetrate joints, muscles and tissues which increases circulation and speeds oxygen flow; it’s also an incredibly soothing, relaxing experience.

3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio in Sioux Falls is set up to accommodate both individuals and couples, on a membership or individual visit basis. Enjoy pre-sauna vibration machines that assist in flushing toxins as well as cooling eucalyptus infused towels. Unlike traditional steam saunas, infrared saunas provide a dry heat that doesn›t feel as hot and doesn›t cause difficulty breathing. But perhaps the largest difference is that infrared light actually penetrates human tissue up to two inches and offers therapeutic benefits because of its ability to be absorbed by your body. It safely raises core body temperatures by 3 degrees during each 40-minute session! This results in a healthy, deep and detoxifying sweat similar to a fat torching workout.

According to 3 Degrees client and enthusiast Toni, “My benefits have included renewal in energy, mood boost, great increase in mobility (I have rheumatoid arthritis), mental clarity, and better sleep. The staff is friendly and helpful. I really appreciate the flexibility in membership/nonmembership options. The owners are good local people. I challenge everyone to do three happy hour sessions to give it a well-educated try.”

Living rooms are likely where you spend the majority of your down time so making it a place you want to be in is paramount. This creative homeowner wanted to brighten up their dark living room and fireplace. The best way to save money is to DIY (do it yourself) and that is exactly what this homeowner did.

LIVING ROOM UPDATES:

• Painted walls white

• Painted the cabinets beside the fireplace white

• “German Schmear” the fireplace (DIY supplies and steps below)

SUPPLIES

• A large bucket of joint compound - 4.5 gallons ($20)

• Drywall joint knife - large and small to get in smaller spaces ($15)

• Sanding blocks ($15)

• Spray polyurethane ($10)

HOW

• Clean the fireplace.

• Apply the joint compound with a joint knife - make sure to press into joints very firmly so it fills, and you don’t get air holes.

• Don’t worry about knife marks or ‘extra’ compound such as on the corners-you will sand this down - better to have too much than not enough.

• Allow drying for 24-48 hours.

before

• Sand by hand - sand some bricks more than others to get a random appearance, if you sand too much you can always add joint compound. Make this work to your taste. You can use an orbital sander to go faster, but the homeowner’s hand sanded because they wanted more control over the sanding and less mess overall in the house.

• Dust - using a dustpan brush - you will need to dust the entire surrounding area - this is a bit messy until you mask off your project. The homeowner thought it was easier to clean it up than to tape plastic sheeting, but did suggest that plastic sheeting would help to reduce the mess the joint compound dust makes.

• Spray with polyurethane to seal

Renovating these rooms added considerable value and appeal to all three homes. These homeowners saved money by not completely gutting the entire room and starting from scratch. Keep these strategies in mind when adhering to your budget during your next home renovation. n

DIY Faux Concrete Pumpkin Vases

Concrete

has become increasingly popular in home design from flooring to countertops. Its ability to be both rustic and modern also makes it appealing for all types of home decor. Create your own faux concrete pumpkin vases that are less messy than making real ones, less expensive than store-bought, and light as a feather. Smaller pumpkins also work great as succulent planters.

DIRECTIONS

1. For mini pumpkins that will be used as a bud vase with a single flower, remove the plastic stem.

2. Paint the pumpkins with a solid coat of white spray paint.

3. Use an X-ACTO knife to cut openings in the tops of pumpkins that will hold a larger floral arrangement. For smaller bud vases, the hole left behind from the stem is likely the perfect size for an individual stem.

4. Paint the surface of the pumpkins with a medium gray chalk paint, making sure to cover the deep crevices. Chalk paint will give the authentic texture of concrete.

5. On a plastic plate, combine the gray and offwhite chalk paint to create a light gray that will provide a subtle contrast to the original gray.

6. Turn a sock inside out and dab lightly into the light gray paint. Then dab the sock onto a clean part of the plate to remove excess. The sock should have a small amount of paint.

7. Lightly dab the sock onto the raised surface of the pumpkin to create the natural contrast found in concrete. Avoid getting the lighter paint in the deep groves. Continue this process until the entire pumpkin has contrasting layers. If it ends up getting too light, complete the same dabbing process with the darker gray over the light gray.

8. Add the floral stems and enjoy! n

SAVING SUBY

THE STORY OF THE RESCUE CAT THAT LIVES AT SCHULTE SUBARU

If you have visited the showroom of Schulte Subaru, you may have noticed a curious cat roaming around like he owns the place. That is because he sort of does. Suby the tabby cat lives full time at the Schulte Subaru Dealership. Suby came to be a permanent resident at the dealership thanks to the generosity of Mike Schulte, owner of Schulte Subaru, and Jen Kolb, Service Advisor, and known animal lover.

Jen has worked for Schulte Subaru for 8 years and many of the repeat customers have learned small things about her, including her love for animals. In the winter of 2018 multiple customers told us of a black striped cat that they saw running around our lot. “I took it upon myself to then let all employees know (in my crazy cat lady way) that they needed to tap the hoods of each car they start, so the cat doesn’t get harmed if it had climbed underneath one for warmth,” recalls Jen “A few

employees looked at me like I was crazy while others admitted that was a smart idea!” One cold afternoon, Jen got a phone call from a parts guy who was outside on break and saw the mysterious cat run into the fenced-in garbage/recycling area. He said, “If you wanted to catch him now is your chance.” Jen grabbed her coat and ran out there. After many failed attempts, we decided to contact our Marketing Manager Lisa Mannes, to see if she had tips for us. She came out with some tuna and lured him right into the box. Once in the box, we brought him inside and placed him in our Parts Manager’s office. We kept him there until he was taken to the Humane Society. While at the Humane Society, a vet took a look at his paws and tail that were frost bitten and got him on some medications for his respiratory issues, worms, and mites. After no one had claimed him, the Human Society contacted Mike Schulte to let

advertorial

him know he was available for adoption. “I will never forget that day, smiles Jen “I got a call from Mike asking me if I was able to come back to the office and when I walked in there was that cat we rescued!” Mike named him Suby and let Jen know that he brought him back to live at the dealership full time.

Four years later and the staff can barely remember a time without him. A day in the life of Suby starts at 7 am when the first employee arrives to work. He likes to cuddle with whoever is feeding him that morning. Once fed, he sits on the showroom floor watching the employees come in for the day and soaking up as much attention and affection as he can. In the late morning to early afternoon, he can be found in the office of his favorite person, Marketing Manger Lisa Manne, napping on her keyboard. Once his nap is finished, he will mosey out to the showroom floor to play with the sales guys before settling into the backseat of a car or his basket on the receptionist’s desk for another nap. Around 4 pm, Suby arouses from his second nap and makes his way down to the customer lounge to greet everyone and look for loose popcorn. For the remainder of the day, Suby can be spotted walking between vehicles or with a customer or an employee to get some playtime in. He is served dinner just before the dealership closes. It’s anyone’s guess what this curious kitty does after hours when he has the dealership all to himself.

Suby has become the unofficial mascot of the dealership. He is loved by employees and customers alike. His adorable face has adorned many marketing campaigns as well as social media

posts. You can follow Suby on Instagram at SubySchulteSubaru. Suby has become so popular that he even has his own drink!

As a board member of Great Bear Ski Valley, Sarah Schulte came up with the idea to sell Suby Smoothies at Great Bear Ski Valley with a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Sioux Falls Humane Society. Every smoothie sale gives Suby the chance to help other pets get rescued just like he was!

Suby is more than just a rescue cat, he represents the culture of Schulte Subaru. The owner could have let him go to the shelter and not thought twice about it, but instead, he brought Suby back to the dealership to bring happiness to everyone he meets. Customers of Schulte Subaru can trust that like Suby, their needs will be met, handled with care, and treated like one of the family.

You Got a Call Back on Your Routine Mammogram. Now What?

We found an abnormality on your mammogram,” the voice on the phone said. “You’ll need to come back for more screening.”

If you get a call like this, you may feel your stomach sink and your pulse race, no matter how many routine mammograms you’ve had. If you hear that something “abnormal” was found – it can feel scary.

Tips for When You’re Called Back After a Mammogram

Anyone can imagine worst-case scenarios. Panicking won’t help, regardless of the results. Instead try these steps if you get that call:

• Do not overreact. You’ll soon get more information; right now you don’t know anything for sure.

• Remember about 10% of all patients who get mammograms get called back. It happens more often with patients’ first mammograms, too.

• American Cancer Society studies show that less than 1 in 10 patients called back actually have cancer. So 90% of the time, the radiologist reading your image simply needs to see a specific area of your breast in a different way.

• Turn to your partner, spouse or a friend. You might need help processing the facts and understanding that the call-back alone is nothing to worry about. Talk it out.

• Ask your health care provider as many questions as possible – they are here to help you.

Remember that treatment has come a long way, and breast cancer is very survivable, especially when caught in the early stages. Millions of women living today are breast cancer survivors.

Rather than worrying, take action and do the one thing that’s within your control: schedule your follow-up. Once you have, let your mind be at peace; for now, you’ve done all you can.

You can also call the Avera Cancer Institute Navigation Center at 888-422-1410. The navigators often take calls from patients who have received call-backs on screening mammograms.

The Follow-up Breast Cancer Screening

In most cases, the professional calling you back is from your provider’s office, and their team can help you set your next appointment. If they don’t set it up, ask what number to call.

The follow-up will likely include a diagnostic mammogram that will capture new images focused on any specific areas of concern identified in your screening mammogram.

Patients report that this procedure can be more uncomfortable, but not painful, while the mammography technologist uses compression to acquire more focused images.

You also may see an ultrasound technologist who will gather more images. Once the team gathers all the images, a radiologist reads them. The radiologist may meet with you to discuss the results and answer questions at the same visit.

In some cases, a biopsy, MRI or contrast enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) is used for additional testing. Each can help radiologists get the best possible images and information. CESM is found to be helpful for women who have dense breast tissue.

When You’re Waiting for Results

Mammography teams aim to get you information quickly. In some cases, you may depart with the knowledge of what was seen and what’s next. In other situations, there may be a delay between the call-back exam and results.

Make sure to share any questions or concerns. If you’re unsure, ask the mammography staff when you’ll get your results and how they’ll contact you.

If you’re age 40 or older, an annual mammogram is recommended. So if it’s time to schedule yours, make the call. Don’t deny yourself something that could save your life. n

Cognivue

A new piece of the puzzle for people with hearing loss

Can cognitive function be hindered because of hearing loss? It is a relevant question that audiologists and doctors have long been asking themselves as they treat individuals who are coping with hearing loss.

A new technology is helping them get some answers. Cognivue is the world’s first FDAcleared, computerized test of cognitive function. This self-administered, 10-minute cognitive performance screening tool is now being used at Midwest ENT & Allergy.

“It is not a hearing test, and it doesn’t measure how smart you are,” says Midwest ENT & Allergy Doctor of Audiology, Holly Ralston. “Rather, it is a screening tool that gives patients peace of mind to know where they stand cognitively. We know there is a link between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline. Now we have a simple screening measure to address and identify the effects of cognitive decline as an earlier stage.”

Cognivue technology objectively, quantitatively and reliably identifies changes of cognitive function.

“These changes give us a better understanding of what a patient’s needs

48 SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2022 sfw | HEALTH

are and eliminates uncertainty about their cognitive function. It also helps guide decision-making as it relates to how hearing technologies and other accessories are programmed.”

Patients take the five to ten-minute Cognivue screening at their initial appointment and then after treating the hearing loss they are retested a few months later to see which areas of cognitive function have improved.

“The screening is definitely not something meant to be intimidating or scared of,” Ralston says. “The results can help you feel confident with the knowledge to take control of cognitive health.”

The Cognivue screening is for new and established patients at Midwest ENT & Allergy. The technology is helpful for anyone who suspects hearing loss, and even those who are already fit with technology like hearing aids, Earlens and cochlear implants.

The FDA estimates that nearly 30 million adults could potentially benefit from hearing device use, but only onefifth of people with hearing problems seek treatment.

“For many, it is tough enough coming to terms with hearing difficulty,” says Ralston. “Our hope is that by educating patients, they will feel more confident moving forward with their treatment plan. Knowledge is empowering.

“Midwest ENT & Allergy is excited to be able to now offer Cognivue to all its new and established patients.”

Breast Cancer Screening Options for All Women

JamieWilliams, MD, sometimes has patients react with shock at their breast cancer diagnosis. They tell the breast radiologist that breast cancer doesn’t run in their family, so how can they have it?

“That’s a myth we fight against,” Dr. Williams said. “Many women who get diagnosed with breast cancer don’t have a strong family history.”

One in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s what makes regular screenings vital for all women.

Breast cancer screening options

Mammograms are the most common type of screening. Women at average risk for breast cancer should have yearly mammograms starting at age 40. Those identified as at an elevated risk for breast cancer should discuss a personalized breast imaging plan with their provider.

Breast MRIs are the most sensitive option. This screening is only recommended for women at an elevated risk for breast cancer due to high costs and limited capacity.

Whole breast ultrasounds are an option for women with dense breast tissue as a supplement to their yearly mammograms.

Mobile mammography units bring 3D mammograms to women in rural areas.

“Our Edith Sanford 3D mobile mammography units that travel to rural communities have the same technology and equipment we have in our Sioux Falls breast center, so patients do not need to drive far to get the screening

50 SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2022 sfw | HEALTH

they need,” said Dr. Williams.

Genetic testing for breast cancer

Larissa Risty, CGC, is a certified genetic counselor. She helps women determine their breast cancer risk.

Risty works with patients at Sanford Health who have a personal or family history of cancer. She uses evaluations and testing to help them understand what that history means for them and their family.

Only 5 to 10% of breast cancer is hereditary. A higher portion of cancer is familial, meaning the cancer in a family isn’t linked to a single gene but there are more cases of cancer in that family than expected.

Genetic testing can help identify which category a cancer case falls into. This helps family members choose the right breast cancer screening and risk reduction options for them.

“The best candidate for genetic testing is a woman with a personal history of breast cancer. Those test results will impact testing recommendations for all her family members,” said Risty.

Determining personal risk

A breast cancer risk assessment models a woman’s personal risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. It combines several factors – her breast history, hormone history, family history and more – into one risk estimate.

The average woman has a 13% lifetime risk to develop breast cancer. Women who are calculated at 20% or above are considered at an elevated risk. These women have the option to get increased screenings with mammograms and breast MRIs alternating every six months.

“When patients are concerned about cancer, it can be so helpful to put their risk into perspective with a number. Then we can develop a personalized screening plan for them,” Risty said. “That’s the most rewarding part of my work. The service and peace of mind that I can provide to patients.”

Getting screened

Women interested in getting a breast cancer screening should make an appointment through My Sanford Chart or by calling the Edith Sanford Breast Center at (605) 312-3455.

Those interested in breast cancer risk assessments should talk to their primary care provider to receive a referral to the Edith Sanford Breast Specialty Clinic.

RAISING THE VOICES OF WOMEN VETERANS IN SOUTH DAKOTA

Sioux Falls DAV Arthur H. Muchow Chapter No.1 Helps Women Veterans Get the Recognition and Benefits They’ve Earned

Reprinted in part from DAV National

Women comprise almost 20 percent of the active-duty armed forces, Reserve and National Guard, and 10 percent of the total veteran population. But the population of women in these communities is growing more rapidly than the systems we have in place to support them. This has created an environment in which—whether intentional or not—women’s service to the nation is often less recognized, less respected, and less valued than their male counterparts.

To combat this inequity for women veterans in the Sioux Falls area, the DAV Arthur H. Muchow Chapter No. 1 is committed to creating events and opportunities for women veterans. One such event, Stand Up for Women Veterans Wellness Retreat was aimed at connecting women with multiple services and networking opportunities.

Army veteran and DAV Arthur H. Muchow Chapter No. 1

member Jill Baker was one of the driving forces behind the event “We thought, what’s the best way we can reach women veterans and those currently serving and bring them all together, make it as easy as possible, reduce barriers so they can just come enjoy that camaraderie that we feel together?”

They dug in, partnering with a local daycare, school, and volunteer groups to offer free child care and parent-child activities as well as food, snacks, and children’s activities. Then they brought in experts from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the local Vet Center, and the Veterans Business Outreach Center to lead wellness classes such as art and writing therapy, yoga, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, keynote speaker Laurie Walsh, a local Marine veteran, and news personality, spoke about the importance of women veterans and their stories, and a host of exhibitors were on hand to discuss free resources available for attendees and their families.

Event attendee Tamara Panning, who served in the Army National Guard, said, “I’m busy with my own family life and working, but I got to meet some other women veterans today,” she added. “In fact, in talking to a group of ladies, we discovered we probably did cross paths 30 years ago in the military, so it was good to have a chance to connect.”

Other attendees, spanning multiple generations of service, connected with more than just resources and each other; for many, it was the first introduction to DAV Benefit Advocate Owen Richards, from the service office in Sioux Falls, who was on hand.

“This event led a number of veterans to contact Owen after the fact, discuss and file brand new claims,” said National Service Director Jim Marszalek. “These kinds of events, especially where veterans feel welcome and safe, can be the turning point where they finally become ready to talk about what happened in service.”

HEAD AND NECK SURGEON PROVIDES EXPERT CARE

Sundeep Alapati, DO, is a new head and neck surgeon at Sanford Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic in Sioux Falls who believes in person-centered care that tailors treatment to the individual.

Dr. Alapati takes a scientific approach when it comes to head and neck cancer care by focusing on each patient’s needs and circumstances.

“Each disease is unique to that person. I make every effort to treat each person as an individual,” said Dr. Alapati.

In addition to working with patients who have cancer, Dr. Alapati also treats people who have thyroid conditions. This includes providing minimally invasive thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

he stated. “You really get to think about the quality of life and avoiding surgery and overtreatment. Patients who would have had a major surgery 20 years ago, we’re not doing those anymore. We’re focused on avoiding procedures that could be potentially debilitating.”

In addition to his work with thyroid conditions, Dr. Alapati also helps patients who experience sleep apnea.

Dr. Alapati brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to his role. His experiences include:

•A fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City

•A residency at St. John Hospital in Detroit, Michigan

•A role as the director of head and neck surgery at the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, New York

•Head and neck surgeon in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama

Dr. Alapati finds it beneficial to be on the same cultural level as his patients, focusing on what’s going on with them and how they’ll handle treatment.

“As a physician, you’re happiest when your patients are happy and doing well,” said Dr. Alapati. “I just want them to have the best possible outcomes they can, including treatment outcomes, mitigation of side effects and the ability to go back to their normal life after they’ve been diagnosed with a potentially debilitating disease.”

THE #1 WAY TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF INFECTIONS

Project Firstline – Providing infection control strategies for healthcare workers and the general public

International Infection Prevention Week is Oct 16 – 22, and one program that is leading the way in better infection control training for South Dakota’s healthcare workers is Project Firstline (PFL). PFL is a CDC-led training collaborative whose goal is to improve infection prevention in healthcare. The South Dakota Foundation for Medical Care leads the project in partnership with the South Dakota Department of Health and the CDC; PFL has become the vehicle to get necessary information into the right hands.

Jess Danko, PFL’s program manager, is pleased not only with how the program is delivering engaging infection prevention training and education to the frontline public health workforce, but also with how it has expanded its reach. Hospitals and clinics, emergency medical services, long-term care, corrections, academics, tribal lands and state and local health departments have the PFL information available to them.

“We want the general public to know PFL aims to reach not only health care workers, we want to get information into other settings that need knowledge of infection control principles,” she says. “Our goal is to have the best practices available for everyone to use.”

Jess suggests the following tips to help prevent viruses –everyday steps everyone can use:

• Wash your hands often – for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Hand hygiene is still the most important thing you can do to stay healthy and protect yourself and your family

• Stay home when sick

• Cover your cough

• Disinfect commonly touched surfaces: doorknobs, computers, cell phones

• Get the recommended immunizations

Miranda Nolte:

Living thankful and grateful for each day

When

life hits you with an unimaginable event you were never prepared for you are left with two choices: You can let the gravity of what happened to swallow you whole and lead you down a dark path, or you can accept what has happened and move forward focusing on being positive, thankful, and grateful for each day. For Miranda Nolte, when life took an unexpected turn, she chose to make peace a priority, by not allowing negativity to exist in her world. She is no longer interested in trying to match the energy of those around her to just fit in. She has learned to remove herself from any situation that doesn’t vibrate her soul.

The ability to see life through the lens of gratitude is rooted in Miranda’s close family. A Sioux Falls native, Miranda, and her brother were raised in a home with loving parents that instilled values of working hard, being honest, following your heart, and to always do what is right. These family values were reinforced by the Catholic school system Miranda grew up in. She attended St. Joseph Cathedral as a kindergartner and graduated from O’Gorman High School. Throughout her childhood and into adulthood, spending time with family was always a priority. Miranda and her brother spent lots of time with their grandparents, especially during the holidays. To this day, Miranda carries on this tradition with her kids by spending the holidays with her parents and their grandparents.

A moment that would set the course for Miranda’s life happened during a family vacation. “We were on our way to California for a summer family vacation and we stopped briefly in Las Vegas, remembers Miranda. “I was completely enamored with the vibrancy of the lights and drawn to the sparkling city of Las Vegas.” “I never stopped thinking about Las Vegas after that trip so, after high school, I just had to see what else was outside of Sioux Falls.” Now as a mother, Miranda recognizes that her decision to move to Las Vegas at the age of 20 must have been excruciating for her parents. Despite their reservations, they supported her dream and let her go. It became the first best experience of her adult life.

October/November 2022 | SiouxFallsWoman.net 57

“It wasn’t until I had kids of my own where I can say I now know that decision had to have been just agonizing for them, but they never showed that to me,” shares Miranda. “They smiled and showed me only love even though there was pain and worry behind their eyes.”

Miranda moved to Las Vegas to continue pursuing her degree in criminal justice which she started just after high school with her eyes set on the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. During this transition, Miranda applied for a job with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. She completed the rigorous physical and written testing as required by the department. At the same time, she was trying to start her career in law enforcement she fell into her career in Insurance Sales. “I enjoyed it so much that I decided I was going see where that would lead me knowing I could always fall back on criminal justice if I wanted.”

Not only did Miranda find her career while living in living Las Vegas,” but she also found her future husband. “We were introduced to each other through mutual friends," smiles Miranda. "After our first date, neither of us went on another first date again, I guess you could say it was love at first sight."

After 7 years of living in Las Vegas, Miranda and her husband decided they would like to move back home to South Dakota. “Like many Vegas locals, the 24/7 city was a season of life for us, that season felt like it was coming to an end, and we were ready to experience new things. We missed the changing of seasons and being close to friends and family and constantly felt like we were missing out on important events,” recalls Miranda. “Ultimately though, my husband wanted to move back to work on the farm so he could lighten the load for his father and uncle and work side by side with his brother as the family farm transitioned into their hands as the next generation.” Miranda and her husband took the leap and traded their city of glitz and glamour for dirt roads, green tractors, and country living in Webster, South Dakota. Oh, and snow. Lots of snow. It was a good compromise; Webster was his home and it was just 2 hours away from Miranda’s home in Sioux Falls.

Miranda and her husband were together for nearly 10 years before marrying. “We were confident in what we had and didn’t feel the need to rush to put a label on it. We never emphasized getting married until we were ready to have children,” says Miranda. Miranda had always dreamt of getting married in her home church – the Cathedral of St Joseph, so in December of 2017, they exchanged vows in her family

58 SiouxFallsWoman.net | October/November 2022

I’ve learned that grief and joy can absolutely coexist. Grief takes time but when I emerge from the flames, I want to be carrying buckets of water for those still consumed by the fire.

church. Shortly after getting married, Miranda became pregnant with their first child, which they would later find out were twins, and they were beyond excited.

Life was sweet during the pregnancy and after the birth of the twins. It was hard at times being new parents, but they were happy. Then one day everything changed. When the twins were 5 months old, Miranda lost her husband unexpectedly. “In the most ironic sense of the word – he died of an enlarged heart.” “I say ironic because if you knew him, you would agree he had the hugest heart of anyone you could have ever met. It was sudden and extremely unexpected” shares Miranda.

Miranda’s husband was fascinated with music. Not just one type, he listened to all genres of music and was simply captivated by it. His passion for music soon became a huge part of Miranda’s life and she learned to appreciate it and let it move her just as it did him. “When my husband first died, I didn’t play a single ounce of music for 6 months because it just tore my heart out to hear it,” recalls Miranda. “There was so much resonation in a song, in every song and so much missing of him, always so much missing.” If she would ride in someone’s vehicle and music was playing, Miranda would immediately reach over and turn it off. Anywhere she went, Miranda would turn the music off. For 6 long months. “Then one day while the twins were playing on the living room floor, they got ahold of the stereo remote and somehow while playing with the remote they managed to turn on our home stereo and the music just started playing from one of my husband’s many playlists.” shares Miranda. “For the first time since he passed, I didn’t allow myself to jump to turn it off, I let it play. I stood there in a frozen state and let myself feel it to my core and amazingly enough, while it did bring me tears, it also made me feel alive.” “It didn’t make me sad, it’s like the sound of music dusted off my soul and breathed life back into it again.” “I was stunned because all that time I avoided music like the plague thinking it would bring me down a deep dark hole, but it did just the opposite.” “Instead, it pulled me out of that deep dark hole.” From that day forward music is back in Miranda’s life all day every day just as it was when her husband was there with them. “He taught me to allow music to light my soul on fire and make me feel alive just as it did for him and that is something I will hold dear forever.”

When someone so special dies, there is a massive disconnection with the universe. From the moment you’re told your loved one

has died, there’s a seismic shift in your soul that you feel for the rest of your life. In a grief journey, or at least in Miranda’s experience, she completely lost all sense of who she was, and what her purpose was. Familiarities were no longer comforting but rather a foreign feeling. “After all, the person you are dies in that same moment that you’re told you lost your loved one, and you’ll never be the same again. But what can emerge from that hell can truly be something inspiring, authentic, and fierce.” “When I share with someone that loss changed me and they say, 'don’t worry you’ll get back to your old self,' I wonder if they understand what change really is. One of the hardest things about being human is that everyone will come to know grief and pain,” says Miranda. “It’s a difficult road to walk but one of the only ways to move forward is to allow yourself to sit with it and feel it all, it’s a personal journey. I’ve learned that grief and joy can absolutely coexist. Grief takes time but when I emerge from the flames, I want to be carrying buckets of water for those still consumed by the fire.”

Rising from the ashes after this life-altering event, Miranda has learned to live with presence, live with intention, not fret the small stuff, and love deeply. “The best days of your life can’t happen without you there,” says Miranda. She focuses on creating a life for herself and her children, thankful every single day to not just live, but to be alive. Embracing the changes that have occurred in her life Miranda has moved back to the Sioux Falls to be closer to family and to make a fresh start for herself and her children. While bittersweet, she is enjoying her new surroundings where she and her children can make new memories.

Miranda hopes to encourage other women by sharing her story and being a positive light for them. “An important woman in my life that I’ve always looked up to once shared with me a quote from our first female secretary of state, Madeleine Albright, 'There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.' Those words have been entrenched into my soul ever since.” Miranda hopes that her story will inspire other women to not force anything but to allow themselves to flow with what genuinely feels right, no matter what their individual stories may be. She hopes her story will inspire other women to foster their growth, make their joy a priority, and protect their inner peace. One of Miranda’s favorite mottos is – “Know your worth, then add tax.” n

Rana firmly believes in YOU creating your future by carving out your own path. She leads by example having navigated from the corporate world to the public sector and now as a full-time entrepreneur. As Rana would say, “My line to success has not been linear, it’s been a super-squiggly line – I wasn’t just given what I have achieved, I pursued it.” For Rana, the pursuit of her career started in college at SDSU being a full-time student-athlete. “Being part of a team, managing grades, and keeping good energy to compete at a high level. Those powerful aspects of athletics gave me skills and the leaders’ mindset to be successful after college.”

Rana considers herself a performance junkie, she loves to help people win in life and business. To maintain her high level of output she consistently builds capacity from within to perform. “Capacity is king,” says

Rana. "One defining characteristic of successful people is their drive to grow in knowledge, character, and learning to do new things. By doing this they build their personal capacity giving them the ability to do things they weren’t capable of before or handle situations that they previously couldn’t. When you have greater personal capacity, you can challenge and teach your team to do the same which will have a net positive effect on your business and ultimately the community. That is SO powerful. It starts with YOU!"

Living on a small acreage outside of Tea, Rana builds her capacity by spending time outdoors with her family and being active in hiking, fishing, hunting, or gardening. She is also addicted to fitness. “The physical and mental benefits of movement are incredible, and it’s something that every individual simply must make a habit,” shares Rana. “For me, it’s through a run or spin class or hot yoga challenge that I am able to let the tension go and find clarity.” Rana uses exercise to step away from all the “noise” to re-center and focus on what matters most. “And that’s my family,” says Rana. “Making sure I am providing for my family, holistically. I’m not always the best, but I try to bring strength, resilience, fun, and a lot of love! We work hard, together, to keep each other going and enjoying the opportunities life provides.” As a wife, mother, community leader and entrepreneur Rana balances the extremes of leadership by being confident yet humble; focused and flexible; optimistic and realistic; empowering and controlling, urgent and patient; frugal and abundant. It’s all about a balanced focus.

Rana recommends that everyone find their pursuit. In business, she continues to be a results-oriented leader with a long-time colleague who shares her passion for building strong workplace cultures, VOLT Strategy. What's New: How Sweet It Is

Deliciously gorgeous creations from Blush Bakery by Kate

Simplyput, special occasions are infinitely more special when you have a one-of-a-kind sweet creation that not only takes your guests’ breath away with its appearance but also tastes sinfully delicious. For Kate Washenberger, having the ability to accomplish exactly this is her joy and purpose.

According to Kate, “From a young age, I have always had an interest in baking - it’s such a wonderful and delicious way to show people that you care and are thinking of them! This hobby of mine eventually led me to earn a Pastry and Baking Certificate and begin my career in the dessert industry over four years ago.”

She shares, “Upon moving back to Sioux Falls last year, I used my parents’ kitchen to bake and decorate a three-tiered cake and twenty-four smaller cakes in one week for my sister’s wedding. I enjoyed that process and having control over my schedule so much that I began to wonder about the possibility of starting my

own baking business out of my home. After deciding to job search a bit still, I further realized that there aren’t very many sources for modern and customizable desserts in the area. I wanted to provide a new option for people to be able to order beautiful desserts that meet their needs and help make their celebrations even that much sweeter and memorable!”

Catch up on vaccinations and check-ups

Many children missed check-ups and childhood vaccinations during COVID-19.

Routine childhood vaccinations are an important and effective way to help protect your child from serious diseases, like measles and whooping cough.

Work with your child’s doctor or nurse to make sure they get caught up on recommended vaccinations and missed well-child visits.
