IT’S BOAT SHOW TIME AGAIN, which means it is also time for us to sit back and reflect on everything we have achieved over the past 14 years. It was back in 2007 that Clare and I launched the very first edition of Cove to coincide with Sanctuary Cove’s premium marine event. We started the magazine with a very clear vision … to create a high-end publication that reflected the luxury and lifestyle of the resort community. Over the years, we have extended our reach to cover the South-East corner of Queensland, including airport lounges, premier hotels and business hubs, and it never fails to give me a thrill when I see the magazine on display in one of the local newsagents. While our distribution model has changed and expanded, one thing we have never compromised on is the quality … the quality of the content, the quality of our advertisers and the quality of our commitment to you, our readers. So on to this current edition. As always, we have pulled out all the stops to bring you the very best that the region has to offer. Let’s start with the upcoming European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York being held at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art.

Local and visiting audiences are being offered a unique chance to view paintings that almost never leave the walls of The Met including works by Rembrandt, Turner, van Gogh, Monet and many more. This is a huge coup for Queensland and it will be well worth making the trip up the M1 to catch the exhibition. If you prefer to stay closer to home, the brand new HOTA Gallery opens in May. The largest gallery in Australia outside a capital city, the inaugural program is sure to impress art critics and the general public alike. Still making art, all be it on the screen, actor Helen Mirren shares an insight into her long career and why she has become an ambassador for L’Oreal Paris at age 75. Of course, our Wheels and Water section is filled to capacity as well. We preview the upcoming Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, check out the latest Endurance 750, take a look at the new luxury car sub-brands, and get an insight into the world of private planes, trains and automobiles. Finally, one lucky reader is going to win the ultimate Weekend Drive Experience courtesy of BMW. It is certainly a special issue, and one worthy of celebrating.

Cove on set

Cove magazine was recently used as a prop in the new series of Josh Thomas’s hit show, Everything's Gonna Be OK. “The main character lives in Los Angeles and is often on the phone with his mother, Penny, who lives in Queensland,” explains Art Department Coordinator Susanna Dooley Boney. “Penny is a person who appreciates the finer things in life, and we thought it would be a fun treat for our Australian viewers to see her with the upscale magazine that they all know and love.” The show is a global success with the first series currently airing via streaming services Stan in Australia and Hulu in the US. This type of exposure is priceless and allows us to position the publication in front of a new and dynamic international audience.

WORDS SONIA HARIA / STELLA MAGAZINE / THE INTERVIEW PEOPLE SAY THE WORDS 'I'm worth it' out loud and I defy you not to flick your hair over one shoulder, lift your chin up a fraction and give an imaginary camera your most promising smile. Because as beauty taglines go, L'Oréal Paris's is the most famous of them all – rising above mere slogan to be part of our everyday lexicon. This year marks its 50th year of championing and celebrating a woman's worth – and it's for this anniversary that I'm granted a rare interview with one of the brand's ambassadors, Dame Helen Mirren. Speaking to me from her US home in Lake Tahoe, on the border of California and Nevada, where she lives with her film director husband Taylor Hackford, Helen's mind isn't far from her British roots. “There's a major lockdown in England, I hear? I talk to my sister frequently and my friends in London. It's extraordinary.” The 75-year-old Oscar-winner tells me about her life over the past year. “My husband and I have been married for 30-something years, you know, a very long time,” she explains. “But in all that time, because of the nature of both of our work, the suitcases are always on the floor ready to be packed or unpacked. “We have literally never spent this amount of time together,” she laughs. As I come to learn over our conversation, Helen sees the positives in most situations. “[The year] could have been disastrous but has actually been fantastic,” she says. “It's been really great to just sort of have what most people have. You know, normal, regular, repetitive lives, but comfortable lives. “So it's been a wonderful way for the two of us to bond, in a weird way. I think it's been a very bonding experience.' From the silver linings of a very strange 2021 so far, we move on to talking about the moment, in 1971, when a 23-year-old copywriter in Manhattan, Ilon Specht, put pen to paper and wrote the tagline 'I'm worth it' for a L'Oréal Preference hair colour advertisement.>>

Twenty years later, Specht told The New Yorker how frustrated she had been with the way women were objectified in the ads of the time. “My feeling was that I'm not writing another ad about looking good for men,” she said. “I sat down and did it, in five minutes. “It was very personal. I can recite to you the whole commercial, because I was so angry when I wrote it.” It resonated immediately, particularly at such a pivotal time for the women's rights movement. “It's hard to describe what the 1970s were like for women,” Helen explains today, and I can practically hear her shaking her head over the phone. “The 1970s were a terrible time for women. “We came out of the feminist revolution of the '60s and suddenly it all went away. “Women were really objectified, I felt, more than before. “Objectified and not given opportunities. “I'm actually really cross I had to live through the '70s as an adult. I wish I had been, like, five or something,” she laughs. “So what a stroke of genius and inspired moment for this young girl to write a line that was so simple and gave you a sense of identity. As if to say, ‘I'm a woman, I'm me, and I'm a strong voice in this room and this world’. “It was borne out of anger and resentment and crossness with all the men. To me, it incorporates the concept of absolute equality.”

Did she ever have moments of having to prove her worth? “Sometimes,” she says. “Sometimes I had to stand my ground in my career.

“To me, the word ‘beauty’ is always pushing you towards being more ‘beautiful’, but that's not what it's about. Your worth is not about beauty at all, it's about having agency.” – Dame Helen Mirren “I was always a little bit bolshy and a bit annoying, I'm sure, as a younger woman. “But I was so lucky in my upbringing: my parents absolutely felt that women as much as men could go anywhere they wanted and do whatever they wanted.”

She does recall one moment, however, when she was a girl. “My mum was once ironing a shirt, and said, ‘Come here, I'd better teach you how to iron a shirt’. And I said, ‘No, Mum, I don't want to learn how to iron a shirt, I'm not interested’. “She replied, ‘Well, believe me one day you'll find yourself ironing shirts’. And at the time I remember thinking, ‘I will never iron a man's shirt. Why should I?’ “But don't get me wrong, my parents were always encouraging us and opening our minds to what was possible, rather than just, ‘You'll get married and have kids’. “For an awful lot of women in my generation, that's how they were brought up.” She tells me how being cast as DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect in 1991 was 'for women everywhere', despite many at the time thinking a show with a female lead wouldn't work. “The success of Prime Suspect was a step in the right direction, partly due to the fact that although women in other professions had been making real progress, they had to pay a price for it. “They had to put up with an enormous amount of prejudice and antagonism towards them in the '90s – and they had to shut up and put up with it. “They couldn't speak about it because if you did you would immediately become a ‘whiner’ and it weakened you, so they had to stay incredibly strong. >>

FEATURE

“But Prime Suspect explained to the world what women were up against.” It certainly struck a chord, and Helen went on to win three TV Baftas for the role. In 2014 she also received the Bafta fellowship for lifetime achievement. She says it is 'upsetting' to see the effects of the pandemic on London's theatre industry. “It's the live performers, the ballet dancers, the singers – all of that world that is such a wonderful part of London has been so devastated. “But it will come back with a vengeance I believe. People will be so ready for it." L'Oréal Paris had quite the coup in signing Helen – even if she does take exception to the term 'beauty'. “It immediately takes 90 per cent of us out of the picture,” she says, and there's that headshake I can hear again. “Because only a small percentage of us are what you would call ‘beautiful’, it's just a ‘thing over there for those people’. “There are great athletes and great artists, we can be all kinds of other things and we don't just have to be beautiful. “And that's fine. It's great that humanity has such variety. “To me, the word ‘beauty’ is always pushing you towards being more ‘beautiful’, but that's not what it's about. Your worth is not about beauty at all, it's about having agency.”

30 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 84

I ask Helen what she'd prefer to call it. “I like the word ‘swagger’,” she laughs. “I want to go to the swagger department in Boots,” and then, calling out an imaginary request in said chemist: ‘Excuse me, where can I find a little bit of swagger for today?’ “Let's call it the swagger industry, not the beauty industry.” So what are her go-tos to get ‘swagger’? “I have to say, I love make-up,” she tells me passionately. “I can spend hours putting make-up on, I love all of that stuff.” She's a fan of budget beauty finds, 'not the high-end stuff’. “I still get terribly excited when I try new drugstore make-up like finding a different eyebrow pencil. “I get so excited when I get home and can't wait to open it.” As for her current go-to product, she loves castor oil. “This is no bullshit, I have it in my hand right now,” she tells me. “It is brilliant. You just need a tiny amount which is great for your hair. “I'm too lazy to colour my hair, so I just use a good shampoo but now and again I'll dye it pink if I feel like it.' I ask for her final piece of beauty advice. “Don't smoke.

“If it did to the outside of your body what it was doing to the inside, you would stop instantly, no matter how addicted you were. “The trouble is, smoking gives you swagger,” she adds. “But that's really not a good swagger eventually.” The refreshing exception to the rule when it comes to 'beauty' brand ambassadors, Helen nonetheless embodies exactly what that original tagline was about. “The message behind our legendary slogan is women's empowerment,” says Delphine ViguierHovasse, global brand president of L'Oréal Paris, and the first woman at its head. “For the past five decades, we have empowered every woman through our beauty products.” “The progress of women has moved on immeasurably over the past 50 years,” says Helen. “But in the last year, so much has fallen on women's shoulders such as homeschooling, as well as cooking and cleaning. “It is better than it was, but unfortunately women are still bearing the brunt, that's how it still shakes down. “So I suspect we'll still need to say ‘We're worth it’ for another 50 years to come.”

SELL WITH SUCCESS WORDS RHONDA OXNAM LOCATED IN A CONVERTED residential building on the Gold Coast Highway, there is something warm and welcoming about the Amir Prestige Property Agents offices in Mermaid Beach. And that is exactly what Founder and Managing Director Amir Mian was after. “We want everyone to feel as home here … our clients, our staff, our visitors,” he says. “We don’t want a stark environment where people feel uncomfortable or under pressure. “It is stressful enough buying or selling a property, without feeling intimidated by your surroundings.” It is this approach that has seen Amir, and the company he has created, become one of the most successful agencies on the Gold Coast. However, that wasn’t always the case. “I started my career in real estate in 2005 when the boom was just finishing,” he explains. “It was a difficult market but I was passionate about real estate and prepared to work hard to do the best for my clients.” Amir’s effort and dedication saw him work his way up the elite ladder and in 2011 he was named the #1 salesperson in the largest realestate brand internationally. Becoming disillusioned with the franchise model of real estate, Amir decided to follow his heart and opened Amir Prestige Property Agents in Paradise Point in March 2016. “To me there was something lacking for the prestige market … and I’m not talking prestige as in the price of the sale, it’s the service, it’s mixing and matching people and their property, it’s the commitment to both the buyer and seller, it’s looking after your staff and ensuring they are happy. “With the franchise model you create a pocket here and another one there, and you give everyone a pocket and they only cover that area, but the Gold Coast is so diverse you can’t work on that model anymore. “People are moving outside their postcode, they are upsizing, downsizing, looking for a hill change to the hinterland, a sea change closer to the beach, moving from a house to a lockdown apartment.” According to Amir, the ‘Prestige’ in the company name is the perfect reflection of his business ethos and inclusive approach. “Prestige also stands for collectiveness as far as the staff are concerned,” he explains.

“A lot of passion comes from within the team and it’s all based on our core values. “We include everyone and make them all feel equally important … from our top agent to our reception team. “The admin area is the core of the business … if your admin team is not happy, engaged, trained and included, your agency will never be successful. “Agents need to get their paperwork completed, their drop cards done, their contacts sorted so the admin team are always part of the package, part of the training, and part of the success.” In order to achieve this harmony, Amir has introduced a range of measures to support the staff. “We have a strong social media group, an inhouse graphic designer, in house sales support team, group personal training sessions and will soon be engaging a life coach,” says Amir. “We are also very family orientated … the agents, their partners and their children are all part of the business. “During school holidays, they bring the kids along and they will be here drawing on the whiteboard, playing in the yard, it’s a very friendly environment.” The approach is obviously working, with Amir opening a second office in Southport in 2017, followed by a third, the aforementioned offices in Mermaid Beach, late last year. “The whole theme behind our model is it’s a one-stop shop and we support that with the right agents, the right training and the right location,” says Amir. “We can sell your farm … or we can find you one. “We can help you upsize or downsize. “We can help you no matter whether it’s North, South or central Gold Coast. “Literally anyone in the office is trained to be able to assist you with all your needs.” This means that although they handle everything from residential sales and commercial deals to new developments, there are no separate departments within the agency. “We are the department,” explains Amir. “All the staff are across every aspect of the business and you can walk into any of our three offices and get exactly the same service and information.

“We are not saying ‘let me put this through our commercial division’, ‘let me put it through our investment department’. “All our agents have the knowledge … and knowledge is power.” Amir Prestige also pride themselves on the level of personalised service they give to their clients. “When you walk into someone’s house, they are giving you access to their most prized possession,” says Amir. “It is their pride and joy, therefore they want to make sure they are giving the key to an agent with a full team behind them who is very well balanced and very well trained for this changing market. “It’s important for them to feel someone is listening and caring about what their needs are. “Everything falls back to the ethics, the training, the environment, the employees and the person who benefits is the client.” While the real estate market on the Gold Cost is currently enjoying unprecedented interest, Amir says it’s important not to get caught up in the hype. “When the market is booming anyone can sell but selling quickly doesn’t mean you got the best price,” Amir insists. “A lot of places are being sold in record time but if I hear that I say to my sellers and my team ‘are you sure you got the right price?’ “A property needs to be marketed properly by the right agency. “Once you do that, you get the right buyer … and the right buyer is the one who walks in and loves everything about the property. “That’s when the agent can look the seller in the eye and say ‘that’s your buyer’. So what advice does Amir have for prospective clients? “If you are a seller, choose your agent wisely,” he says. “A sticker saying ‘record price’ doesn’t necessarily mean your agent was doing everything that was needed. “As an agent, if you know in your heart that the seller’s happy and the buyer's happy … that’s when it’s time to celebrate because you have helped someone achieve their dream “That’s the real power of sales.”

PUTTING THE SEA IN COUNTRY

Sun, sand and country music go hand-in-hand for Gold Coast singer/songwriter Casey Barnes. WORDS RHONDA OXNAM

THE BEACHFRONT suburb of Currumbin is not the place you would expect to find one of Australia’s most popular country artists, however, for singer/songwriter Casey Barnes it is the perfect place to make music. “People don’t really compute country music and the Gold Coast together but you would be surprised just how many country artists are based here,” Casey explains. “It’s a beautiful place so why wouldn’t you want to live here. “You’ve got everything at your fingertips, you’ve got the best beaches in Australia – if not the world, you’ve got the hinterland behind you and if you have to go somewhere there are two airports nearby. “Also, with the music industry now, what people like myself and Amy Shark have demonstrated is that you don’t have to move to Sydney or Melbourne, you can actually be based on the Gold Coast and do well.” Doing well is something of an understatement when it comes to Casey’s recent success. He has released a chart-topping album, received an Aria Award nomination, been a finalist in the APRA Awards and played sell-out arenas across the nation … and that is just in the past year. “If someone had told me that 12 months prior, I probably wouldn’t have believed them but it’s just been an amazing year,” he admits. “It was pretty tough at the time … we had organised a national tour to coincide with the album and ended up having to cancel the whole thing. “We lost a lot of shows and a hell of a lot of money … it wasn’t just me, it was my band and everyone else around us that was affected. “But we were very lucky towards the end of 2020, we got out to do some regional Queensland shows, we played to sell-out crowds in Brisbane and the Gold Coast and things started to pick up.” While COVID certainly had a huge effect on his plans, Casey chose to embrace the lockdown, launching a new album, Town of a Million Dreams, during the pandemic.

“We had a lot of really big discussions about that because some artists were doing the opposite, they were shelving their releases and saying it’s too risky. “But we went the other way because we’d worked so hard to get the momentum and we didn’t want to stop and have to start again. “COVID did force us to adapt. … we were still launching an album and releasing music but we had to change the way we went about it. “Because we weren’t able to tour, we did a lot of online concerts, we did livestreams, and we did the entire album launch online. “It was a really big project and it ended up being an awesome experience even though we had to think outside the square.” The name of the album, Town of a Million Dreams, is a dual nod to his home town and Nashville … the Mecca of country music. “I grew up in a small town in Tasmania and as a kid you’ve always got dreams of what you want to do,” Casey explains. “But it’s also a tribute to Nashville, which is literally a melting pot of ridiculously talented people – whether they are artists or musicians or producers. “And it isn’t just country music which is an interesting point. “It’s all genres … it’s rock, it’s pop, it’s dance music and lots of country as well. “I was so lucky to spend quite a bit of time there and it’s such a great place … there’s this energy about it that is amazing.” With the album reaching No 1 on the Country Charts, Casey is looking forward to getting back on the road and sharing his music with his fans. “I’m really quite weird … I feel more comfortable playing in front of a stadium full of people than I would playing in front of three of my closest friends,” he admits. “That connection you get between yourself and the crowd is hard to top and I have really missed that during the lockdown.” He may now be a passionate Gold Coaster with a successful music career, however, a young Casey moved here with a very different career path in mind.

“I grew up in Tassie … that’s a massive AFL state and I played a lot of rep footy as a kid. “One of the reasons I made the move to the Gold Coast when I was around 18-19 was because the standard of football was great here and I really wanted to play for the Southport Sharks because they were in the state league at the time. “I ended up playing in the premiership with a guy called Nick Riewoldt who went on to play for St Kilda.” But there came a point where Casey had to make a decision whether to concentrate on music or football. “I remember sitting in a café at Main Beach with my mum and dad and I said ‘I think I want to give music a crack and footy is probably going to have to go by the wayside’. “They told me to back myself so I did.” However, Casey was far from an overnight success. “I remember in the early 2000s I used to do a covers gig on a Tuesday night at O’Malley’s in Surfers Paradise, “It was a tough gig … it was 9pm to 1am but one of the best pieces of advice I was given was to play every show as though you never know who is in the crowd. “One night there was this guy there – and I didn’t know who he was at the time – but his name was Clint Boge, and he was the lead singer of a huge Australian rock band called The Butterfly Effect. “During one of my breaks he took me aside and said ‘What are you doing wasting your talent in this bar?’ ‘Do you have aspirations of releasing your own music?’ “I said ‘I’d love to but I’m not sure how to go about it’. “He just gave me this huge kick up the backside and said this is what you have to do, this is how you have to do it, which was great advice at the time. “It was a pivotal moment where I was like, ‘you can just stay here doing covers gigs for the rest of your life or you can get out of your comfort zone and try to release your own music’.

So why country music specifically? “Thanks to my mum and dad I grew up listening to a real broad array of stuff from James Taylor though to Elton John but country music was always a big part of that. “And that’s influenced where I ended up because it’s country but there’s a hint of pop in there and a bit of rock. “I definitely don’t fit into that traditional country genre, that style’s already been done by so many artists and I wanted to do something new and different. “We’ve found this right blend and I think it’s working really well.” Having benefited from some great advice and a lot of support throughout his career, Casey has some wise words for other young musicians who want to follow in his footsteps. “Be patient … one of things newcomers don’t realise is there are a lot of ups and downs,” he says. “When you get the downs it’s easy to think ‘I’m going to chuck it in, it’s too hard’, but it’s all about the long game, and sticking at it.” And if you can manage to do it with the sand at your feet and a guitar in your hand, that’s an added bonus.

EXPRESSIONS OF LOVE The new Hardy Brothers 2021 wedding campaign strikes a poetic balance between the enduring symbols of matrimony and the unique expressions of modern love.

THE MASTER CRAFTSMEN at Hardy Brothers have distinguished each piece of their 2021 wedding campaign with emotion and innovation for the contemporary couple. Poetically named Amora, Omnia and Quintessential, the new engagement collections are imbued with an expression of intimacy and romance in their design. “We’re careful to ensure that it’s our customer’s vision at the centre of the process, not our own,” explains Hardy Brothers CEO Stuart Bishop. The Amora collection, which was conceived as a modern interpretation of a Hardy Brothers classic, lives up to its Spanish heritage to present a stunning selection inspired by love. Some of the most revered signatures such as upswept under rails and six prong hexagonal settings are reimagined in an enchanting and contemporary way. Through an unwavering commitment to artisanship, the master craftsmen have embedded clarity of vision within the Amora collection that is matched only by their selection of extraordinary diamonds. The Omnia Collection, whose name is derived from the Arabic word for wish, also reflects a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and exacting design. As Vivienne Westwood once said: ‘Buy less, choose well, make it last’, and this timeless collection is certainly one to be worn and appreciated through the generations. Omnia’s key principles of faithfulness and sincerity are celebrated in the extraordinary and radiant qualities of each diamond. Realised in a hexagonal six prong sartorial setting, each piece pursues a unity of proportion, rhythm and movement through an artful observation of minimalist design principles while nurturing the individual character and signature of its maker.

Quintessential

Omnia

The final collection in the Hardy Brothers wedding campaign is a romantic extension of the well-known Quintessential Collection. Built upon the same values of traditional craftsmanship and luxury, Quintessential Engagement is tailored for the modern bride. The collection presents opportunities in four and six claws, as well as in two tone and single alloy. Each piece is designed to be paired with the timeless Quintessential Diamond Bands. Hardy Brothers believe that a diamond’s provenance is integral to its allure. Therefore, every diamond in each new collection is certified and the company have developed a global network of supply chain partners to source high-quality diamonds and gemstones.

Their heritage and knowledge of the craft have afforded them the opportunity to forge meaningful relationships based on trust. Hardy Brothers actively align themselves with industry leaders that adhere to certain operating codes, particularly the Kimberly Process, and have worked to establish policies that reduce the risk of violating environmental and human rights standards. If you’re inspired by the new engagement collections, you can work with Hardy Brothers bespoke services to craft your own unique piece. Their suite of customisation and commissioning services provide clients with direct access to Master Craftsman and a direct line for the most desired precious gems and diamonds.

TEAM OF CHAMPIONS The team from Champions Hair Beauty Day Spa at Links Hope Island have a very special rapport with their clients and each other.

CAROLINE CHILDS, KELLIE RAWNSLEY AND TERI PAPWORTH have a very unique working relationship. The close-knit trio has been looking after the needs of clients at Champions Hair Beauty Day Spa for over 20 years, building a strong friendship along the way. “We have been together since 1997,” explains Champions Owner/Director Caroline Childs. “Kellie has been our Salon Manager and Teri our Nail Technician for all of that time. “We each have different roles within the business and have all worked very hard in our areas watching the business grow over the years.” When asked the secret behind their longevity as a team, all three have similar answers. “Like all good successful relationships, it is built on trust and respect,” says Caroline. “Plus friendship and laughter,” says Kellie. “We have a lot of fun working together. “I have had a great career in the hair industry and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I was given all those years ago. “It is so good when you have great people to work for that always appreciate your efforts and in return give you the flexibility when it is needed.” “We have always trusted, respected and remained loyal to each other,” adds Teri. “It also helps when you have a great work place to go to and the positive responses from the clients make you feel appreciated in return.”

As for the most rewarding aspect of the job? “Champions Hair Beauty Day Spa is one of the very few places that can offer all of your hair and beauty services in the one location,” says Caroline. “It is a one stop shop to make yourself over from your head to toes. “Every day, whether it is hair, beauty or nails, we are making our clients feel better about themselves,” she adds. “We not only make them look good but make them feel good at the same time. “The business has grown successfully based on these principles and we are extremely proud of what we have achieved.” After many years based at Sanctuary Cove, Champions have recently relocated to new premises at Links Hope Island Golf Course. “The salon is now a lot bigger and brighter with so much natural light overlooking the beautiful golf course,” says Caroline. “From the moment you drive in the atmosphere is very relaxing and our wonderful location really complements our services to create a different experience to any other place. “Although we have become even busier it still retains a relaxed feel,” says Teri. “The clients and staff just love the salon and Links location.” Given the many innovations and new products introduced over the past two decades, the team are continually adapting their skills to suit the current trends.

“The wonderful part of the industry is that it is always changing depending on fashions, styles and products,” explains Caroline. “You must be prepared to use what works but always be ready to adjust with the times. “In recent years social media has become such an important tool to reach out and communicate with the market.” One thing that hasn’t changed is Champions’ commitment to their clients, both existing and new. “We pride ourselves on our personalised service,” says Kellie. “There are not many places on the Gold Coast where you can get your hair, nails, pedicure and spa treatments done all at the same time and we really enjoy seeing our clients looking and feeling great.” “If you are seeking a change for your hair and beauty, we would love to see you,” adds Caroline. “We will try our very best to provide the service we have built, and are so proud of, over the past 20 plus years. As for advice for our readers … “Look after yourselves in mind, body and soul and be the best person you can be,” Caroline says. “Be open to new experiences and if you believe then make it happen.”

THE MET MASTERPIECES

Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art welcomes European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Joseph Mallord William Turner United Kingdom 1775–1851 Venice, from the Porch of Madonna della Salute c.1835 Oil on canvas 91.4 x 122.2cm Bequest of Cornelius Vanderbilt 1899 / 99.31 Collection: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York WE MIGHT NOT be able to wander through the world’s best art galleries for some time but that doesn’t mean Australians will miss out on viewing works by some of the great masters. In a coup for Queensland, Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) will be the exclusive Australian venue for the major exhibition, European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. “This incredibly exciting exhibition for Queensland, curated by The Met in New York in consultation with QAGOMA, will feature works by some of the greatest painters of all time, including Rembrandt, Turner, van Gogh, Monet and many more,” says Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch. Presented in partnership with Art Exhibitions Australia, the exhibition will run from 12 June to 17 October and feature 65 paintings that chart Western art history’s most iconic movements over the past 500 years.

Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Max Hollein, says the exhibition presented a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in which The Met – during the renovation of their galleries for European paintings – could share these masterpieces with the people in Australia. “It brings great joy to see such magnificent paintings, and the many stories they tell, come to Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art,” says Max. Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines says European Masterpieces will begin in the 1420s, with a drama-filled panel painting,

The Crucifixion by Fra Angelico, and end in 1919 with one of Monet’s late Water Lilies, a precursor to abstraction. “The exhibition traces the development of art and artists from a time when creativity was closely controlled through the patronage of church and state, to a period in which our contemporary idea of the independent artist was born,” explains Chris. Visitors to the exhibition can view Titian’s poetic Venus and Adonis of the 1550s; Caravaggio’s lyrical The Musicians of 1597; Rembrandt’s painterly Flora of c.1654; and Vermeer’s elaborate Allegory of the Catholic Faith of c.1670-72, together with outstanding nineteenth century impressionist and postimpressionist paintings by Monet, Renoir, van Gogh and more. “This superbly representative historical account of European painting makes clear,

artistic innovation – seen in works of art that have challenged and sometimes changed the world – is far from an invention of our time,” says Chris. “It’s a major coup for Brisbane and an extraordinary opportunity for our audiences to experience these important works from one of the finest collections of European painting in the world, the majority of which rarely leave permanent display in New York.” GOMA's program will also feature hands-on digital and analogue activities to accompany the masterworks, plus a suite of programs and events including talks, workshops and performances, as well as a major publication. WELL TRAVELLED

A TASTE OF ITALY

Discover the charm of Tuscany in Northern New South Wales. WORDS JASON MURAKAMI

THE GRAND TOUR is the name given to an old rite of passage through Europe for the upwardly mobile. The tradition has influenced cuisine, culture and all things architectural in England, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand. One of the tenements for this famous vestige was sperimenta e porta con te which loosely translates in Italian to ‘experience and take with you’. The Tour, as it is now known, flourished from about 1660 until the advent of large-scale rail transport in Europe in the 1840s. It was associated with a standing itinerary which included traveling to Dover in England, Paris to Marseilles in France, Genoa to Florence to Venice in Italy and Athens in Greece. Prior to the COVID outbreak the tradition was being readily taken up once again particularly by upwardly mobile antipodeans.

I was recently pleasantly reminded of the Grand Tour mantra while sitting at The Italian Diner, a quaint eatery in the town of Bangalow in northern New South Wales. Spirited with my memories of my own Grand Tour, I could not help but recall my Tuscan experience and the lovely Italian trattoria where I found myself seeking refreshments. It was a pleasant surprise to me that my observations and comparisons to this lovely establishment to my experiences in Tuscany were not unfounded given that one of The Italian Diner’s owners once lived in Lucca, a beautiful city in Tuscany. The influences from Lucca can be readily seen in the eatery’s decor and, of course, its menu. Founded by the Etruscans in the 3rd century BC before becoming a Roman colony in 180 BC, Lucca is one of the oldest cities in Italy.

The rectangular grid of its historical centre preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the amphitheatre may still be seen in the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro which is home to some of the city’s most celebrated trattorias. In Italy, public eating houses follow a traditional classification system and fall into three main categories – a Ristorante, a Trattoria or an Osteria. The distinction between the three types of venues holds a very distinct meaning in Italy in terms of culture, history, and economics. Traditionally, a ristorante is more upmarket. The term came into use to describe elegant and sophisticated dining establishments which featured well-dressed clientele and expensive foods that are not limited to season and locality and assert the most decorous service etiquette.

Less formal than a ristorante is the trattoria which is a more relaxed and unpretentious place to dine. A trattoria makes the best of local produce as it is available. Thus, has an ever-changing seasonal menu and wine list and more casual service. The osteria is an even less formal place than a trattoria with limited food such as cheese and meat boards with a greater emphasis on the wine list and casual service. Bangalow’s The Italian Diner is a perfect example of a classic trattoria. Its menu makes the most of the fabulous northern New South Wales local produce and has an ever-changing impressive seasonal menu. The wine list is more than competent, and while the service is casual it has a penchant for style. For my evening at The Italian Diner I enjoyed Venice’s famous dish carpaccio with a Bangalow twist of using beetroot, pickled sardines with thyme crumb and slow roasted porchetta on Tuscan bean salad. The last time I experienced pickled sardines I was sitting in Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. I must say I think I prefer the delicious Bangalow version.

In these travel - challenged times overnight stays are a great way to enjoy a break and support intra or interstate town communities. If you have not been to Bangalow in recent times you should make the effort as you will be very impressed with this rustic town which was first settled in 1881 and became the centre of the surrounding agricultural farmlands which now serve its surrounding eateries with fresh local produce. The Bangalow Guesthouse is beautiful place for an overnight getaway.

The homestead has a fascinating and treasured past, combining the charm of a bygone era. The 3-acre grounds are bordered by Byron Creek and high, deep green hedgerows. The lush lawns and gardens surrounding the property ensure complete privacy for any stay. Better still it is a 3-minute walk to The Italian Diner which are happy to pack a macadamia panna cotta with orange blossom syrup and a lovely bottle of Chianti to take back to the guesthouse to enjoy in front of the fireplace.

BRING THE HEAT

The founder of The Chilli Chick Shop, Liesl Addicoat, brings passion and flavour to all her products.

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY MARJ OSBORNE WHEN WE SAY that Liesl Addicoat’s food is ‘hot’, it’s a compliment of the highest order. A chef by trade, Liesl shares her passion for flavoursome food through the products she makes in her kitchen for The Chilli Chick Shop. Liesl’s journey into business took a circuitous route. After serving her chef apprenticeship at the Royal Pines Resort, Liesl gained experience in Australian kitchens before spreading her wings to work in the Canadian Rockies for several years. On her return home, Liesl moved into food industry training and product development in a corporate environment. Little did she know that a geographical move was about to change the direction of her career. “We moved to the Tweed region in 2016 and were pleasantly surprised at the amazing produce in the area,” Liesl says. Her husband, a keen gardener, expanded their home garden, growing vegetables including different varieties of chillies. Their produce inspired Liesl’s creativity as she began making chilli sauces and relishes for friends, using her sauces as a base for recipe development.

52 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 84

As word of the bold flavours and textures of Liesl’s sauces spread, demand grew. “It was time to try something for me, to take the plunge to follow my passion full-time,” Liesl tells us, describing the launch of her business at the Chinderah Chilli Festival in March 2018 as the first time her range went on show to a wider audience. Living in a country with a fledgling chilli industry, Australians may not be fully aware of chilli’s widespread use in world cuisines. Almost 16 per cent of the world's food production is chilli-related, with over 400 different chilli varieties grown worldwide. Inspired by the Tweed’s local produce, The Chilli Chick’s products are all handcrafted, smallbatch chilli spiced sauces, relishes, pickles, oil, dukkah, chilli fudge and popcorn made from fresh Australian produce. As her production level has risen, Liesl not only sources her chillies ‘hyperlocally’ from her own garden but also from the surrounding Tweed area and further afield in Queensland when necessary. “We use six or seven different types of chillies in our products,” Liesl tells us.

While there are traditional hot sauces in the range, such as 'Some Like It Hot' that contains five different types of chilli, Liesl’s business is different to others in the way she combines chilli with other vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, beetroot, pear and traditional tomato. The result is sauces that are full of flavour and texture, achieved without preservatives or fillers. Embellished by Asian ingredients including miso and tamarind or native Australian plants such as pepperleaf, The Chilli Chick products are completely different from anything else on the market and are suitable for gluten-free and vegan diners. “It’s not just about heat, it’s always about flavour first,” Liesl says, adding that she makes products to suit all palates from mild to feisty and sweet to savoury. A great example of Liesl’s flavour principle is her best-selling Beetroot Chilli Relish, the soothing coolness of beetroot broken by a medium heat chilli as it lingers on the palate. It makes a perfect topping for a ham sandwich, so different to the Treacle Chilli Onion Relish whose jammy bite is a great complement to barbequed beef sausages.

Try the new chilli conserve where raspberry and lime are counterbalanced by chilli hot enough to linger on the lips. Its fruity citrus tang would provide a good balance for the richness of roast chicken, or as an accompaniment to soft cheese, especially when poured over baked camembert. Two of my ‘go to’ products are the Coconut Sambal, an Asian sprinkle mix complex enough to pimp simple stir-fries and soup into greatness, and the Cheeky Sweet Chilli Sauce packed with Asian produce, the perfect accompaniment for many vegetable and meat dishes. Inspired by local produce, in just three years Liesl has taken The Chilli Chick’s products from humble beginnings to acclaim, winning five awards at the Mr Chilli Awards in 2020. It’s well worth getting your hands on some of Liesl’s ‘hot’ creations.

PERFECT PINOT According to Tony Harper, the 2018 Shaw and Smith Lenswood Pinot Noir is an epiphany wine. THE ADELAIDE HILLS have produced heaps of benchmarks made from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Nebbiolo. But, as far as I’ve tasted (ignoring the freakishly good Ashton Hills wines), very few, if any, remarkable Pinots. Shaw and Smith – the company buoyed (and no doubt equally as fettered) by its reputation for Sauvignon Blanc, has turned that notion on its head with what is not only a wonderful expression of Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir, but a great example of the variety, regardless of its origins. But I’m getting ahead of myself ... When cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith established Shaw and Smith, a smidge over three decades ago, they chose the Adelaide Hills as their base to make cool-climate, top quality wines. A decade later they purchased a site near the small township of Balhanna on the western slopes of the Adelaide Hills, to establish their vineyards, winery and brand. The Shaw and Smith Sauvignon Blanc has become part of our vinous vernacular, while the M3 Chardonnay and Adelaide Hills Shiraz added some glitz to the range. It was and is a successful brand with a fabulous reputation. The founders and their families could no doubt have trundled along quite happily on the back of the Shaw and Smith label and its Balhanna vineyards. But anyone who has ever met the cousins would realise that was never going to happen. Two brilliant men with ambition, a quartet of canny eyes on the Australian and international wine scenes and enough insight to realise they could grow their people and their vineyards.

56 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 84

In 2012 David LeMire joined the team as Sales and Marketing Manager (now joint CEO), and a year later they hit paydirt by recruiting Adam Wadewitz – a young, incredibly talented winemaker (also now joint CEO). From that point on things seem to have accelerated. First there was the 2011 purchase of the Tolpuddle vineyard in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Almost immediately the Tolpuddle Chardonnay’s and Pinot Noirs became some of the most sought after in the country – they are amazing wines. A year later they found a 20 hectare vineyard in Lenswood – not much more than 7 kilometres from the Balhanna site if you were a crow, planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, so they bought it. Unlike Tolpuddle, which sits aside from the Shaw and Smith brand, the Lenswood Vineyard wines are labelled as Shaw and Smith, but with markedly different labels. The Lenswood vineyard is higher and cooler than Balhanna, with steeper slopes and a slightly different soil profile. It’s obviously more suited to Pinot Noir, but it also makes Chardonnay with a much different profile than the M3 – more flinty, less opulent and probably more age-worthy. You can see the thinking behind owning two vineyards so close in proximity, but quite disparate in terms of the wines they produce. They give very different interpretations of what the Adelaide Hills can muster, even if they come out of the one shed. And that’s part of puzzle that makes wine such a wonderful drink. But it’s the Pinot Noir from the Lenswood vineyard that I reckon speak loudest to not just the

qualities of the land, but also the Adam Wadewitz touch, and the guile of his winemaking team. It’s hard not to wonder how much the learning from making the Tolpuddle Pinots has influenced what they do with the Lenswood fruit. Regardless, there is a beautiful touch to the Shaw and Smith Lenswood Pinots ... they are fine and pretty – much lighter framed than their Tasmanian kin – but braced by an earthy, savoury frame that takes it from simple Adelaide Hills Pinot (and they can be kind of simple) to something much more beguiling and profound. The land acquisition didn’t end with the Lenswood vineyard. There’s a gorgeous hillside in the Piccadilly Valley, steep, cool and planted by the Shaw and Smith team to a very Burgundian 10,666 vines per hectare (that’s 75 centimetres between the vines, in rows just over a metre wide). This kind of farming is labour intensive, and – if you have the means – the catalyst for some special equipment. Parked in the vineyard shed is a tractor that appears hybridised to a moon-buggy and a hornet. It works with hydraulics, pumping up to span the rows and work within their narrow confines: I long to drive it. The vines are babies – Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – and it will be a few years before we see a Shaw and Smith Piccadilly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. But it will happen, and when it does we will have an open door to tasting top-notch wines, made by the same hands, in the same walls, but sourced from similar but different vineyards within a bike ride of each other. I can’t wait.

FAMILY COMES FIRST Boutique family and relationship law firm, Richardson Murray, sets sail in 2021.

Stephanie Murray

Anton Richardson

2021 HAS SEEN the launch of Richardson Murray, a boutique family and relationship law firm in the heart of the Gold Coast. Captained by well-established Gold Coast family lawyers, Anton Richardson and Stephanie Murray, the firm is committed to achieving positive outcomes while minimising stress, limiting delays and avoiding unnecessary legal expense. According to Anton and Stephanie, the tides have turned and clients no longer favour large corporate law or commercial litigation law firms that also offer family law representation. Clients would rather confide in a boutique family law firm with caring, understanding legal professionals who are sensitive to their needs. Richardson Murray provides private representation to individuals, guiding them through what is often a sensitive and emotional journey. “Stephanie and I are very excited about the establishment of our boutique family law firm,” Anton said. “Over the years we have learned that clients want a family law firm they can trust, with lawyers who are best in class and committed to excellence. “Family Law is a very specialised area of law that requires lawyers who practice exclusively in the field.

62 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 84

“We therefore decided to create a boutique family law firm that practices only in family law. “We are committed to providing our clients with an exceptional quality of legal service and client care.” To this end, the Richardson Murray Mediation Centre has been established to promote an alternative means to dispute resolution than Court proceedings. Providing custom designed and built facilities with fully catered meeting rooms and boardrooms for mediation, collaborative law and arbitrations, the Mediation Centre is located beside the Richardson Murray offices in The Wave building, Broadbeach. “We were focused on the Broadbeach location because of the convenience to our clients and the availability of ample free parking right in the heart of the Gold Coast,” Anton said. “Richardson Murray represents clients from all parts of the Gold Coast, so having such a central location is of utmost importance.” As a Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist in family law, Stephanie is well qualified to assist clients through every step of the journey. “Our clients are our utmost consideration and we are fully committed to ensuring that your needs are met,” she said.

“We listen to your story, advise as to the law, discuss options, make recommendations, develop a strategy that suits your individual circumstances, then achieve results.” Offering empathy and expertise, Richardson Murray is able to guide clients through the maze of Family Law. “We take the emotion out of decision making while still providing comfort and reassurance,” Stephanie explains. “Our clients are well informed from the outset as to the path that we will take and what to expect along the way. “At Richardson Murray, anything less than excellence is not good enough. “We go above and beyond to ensure results and client satisfaction so that you can move on with the next chapter of your life. We Go Further.” With personable experts, personalised service and a specialised approach, there is no doubt that Richardson Murray is setting a new standard for family law firms on the Gold Coast and in Queensland.

FOMO fuels price hikes By Michael Kollosche

There’s a lot of emotion in property right now. Cashed-up buyers have bolted out of the gates in 2021 with a gusto not witnessed in recent real estate history. The fear of missing out (popularly known as FOMO) is very real for those who’ve been going to auctions and open homes month after month without success. Across the board, it would be fair to say there’s been 5% growth per quarter on most prestige Gold Coast assets and even higher in some areas. New price records have been set across several Gold Coast suburbs already in 2021. Kollosche kicked off January with a $12,800,000 sale on 139-141 Monaco Street in Broadbeach Waters, breaking both the record for the street and the suburb. Last month our team established a new price benchmark in Mermaid Waters where a three-level waterfront entertainer at 21 Saxonvale Terrace sold under the hammer for $3,410,000.

New suburb records have also been set down in Tallebudgera Valley ($5m), Helensvale ($2.33m), Jacobs Well ($2.225m), Burleigh Waters ($2.2m), Ormeau ($2.125m), Advancetown ($1.65m), Kingsholme ($1.52m), Oxenford ($1.28m) and Springbrook ($1.15m). In another sign of just how far prices have come, five new Gold Coast suburbs entered the million-dollar median club for the first time this year, namely Currumbin Valley ($1.25m), Currumbin ($1.1m), Tallebudgera ($1.1m), Runaway Bay ($1.035m) and Tallai ($1.026m). The median house price is now over $1 million in 12 out of 52 Gold Coast suburbs while in Main Beach the median is tipped to hit $3 million in 2021 if the current rate of price growth continues. In February CoreLogic’s national home values index surged by 2.1% — the largest month-on-month change in 17 years - while in March that same index rose by 2.8% in what was the biggest monthly growth since October 1988.

2

“For those who failed to go hard early, rising prices are a bitter pill to swallow.” With emotions running high and interest rates at record lows, competition among hungry buyers is driving impressive sales results across the Gold Coast, both on and off the market. A buyer who previously missed out on several properties was ultra motivated coming into Kollosche’s auction of 34 Bulolo Avenue, Runaway Bay last month. Strong competition among 11 registered bidders produced 68 bids in around 17 minutes to push the price $950,000 above reserve to $3,950,000. A local couple who had been looking for more than a year has claimed the keys to a luxury hilltop mansion on Tallai’s most coveted street. Boasting panoramic views over the city, Kollosche sold 9 Grandview Terrace within 16 days for $3,800,000.

Buyers shopping off-market are also willing to pay a premium to secure blue-chip real estate. The last vacant block of land on prestigious Admiralty Drive has sold for $8,000,000 - the highest price per square metre for residential land in exclusive Paradise Waters. A local buyer secured the 1600m2 plot which occupies a point position facing north-east just off Main River in an off-market sale negotiated by Kollosche. A 711m2 beachfront residence set over three levels inside 2 Ocean Isles, Main Beach changed hands last month when a Sydney buyer laid down $5,800,000 in a cash, unconditional deal. The results mark another stellar month of sales at Kollosche with agents continuing to leverage a hot market to deliver exceptional price points for our clients. Kollosche’s auction clearance rate now sits at 91% for the financial year to date signalling the success of effective marketing and the power of sticking to proven processes.

Commercial powers up There’s no shortage of action in the commercial arena too where Adam and Tony Grbcic continue to deliver strong sales and attract premium new stock to present to the market. Kollosche Commercial’s campaign on a waterfront opportunity at 2 River Terrace in Tweed Heads hooked a Sydney buyer who paid a premium of $3,150,000 for the 1943m2 Tweed Harbour holding. Last month the Commercial team launched an expressions of interest campaign on Main Place, a 3722m2 site at 2709-2732 Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach.

Last month Kollosche welcomed Hayley Zovic, who is heading up our Commercial Leasing and Property Management arm. Hayley’s energy and experience give Kollosche the capacity to serve our valued commercial clients from the point of purchase right through to securing quality tenants and managing that asset for premium returns ongoing. Momentum in the real estate arena shows no sign of slowing down throughout the month of May. If there is anything our team can assist you with this month, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Widely regarded as the best development site in Broadbeach, enquiry has been high on the site which holds approval for two 68-storey towers with a mix of residential units and serviced apartments, shops and offices. With an established Commercial sales team driving strong results and new business, Kollosche has now moved to fill a gap in the market for an executive standard of leasing and asset management.

A New Breed of Barefoot Luxury Created by the founders of The Farm Byron Bay, The Beach House East Coast delivers a conscious dose of coastal chic in a stunning beachfront pocket of Northern NSW.

By Janelle Estreich

hen Tom and Emma Lane first laid eyes on a former Christian camp on a private beachfront site just 20 minutes from Byron Bay, they knew they had stumbled upon something special.

“As soon as we saw it we knew it had to be part of our wider plan.” The plan at that point included The Farm Byron Bay, where the Lanes famously transformed a dairy farm into a thriving agriculture and restaurant enterprise educating thousands of people each year on sustainable farming while supporting multiple micro-businesses. “We had created a farm for the people, so we saw the potential to create a beach house for the people too,” says Emma, who 4

“Given the extent and beauty of our coastline, we really wanted to share a story around conservation of our marine ecosystem and the coastal environment.” Having secured the site at 70 Shelly Beach Road in East Ballina in mid-2017, the Lanes took well over a year to realise their vision for The Beach House East

market in a national campaign led by Kollosche. Located just 10 minutes from Ballina Airport, 10 minutes from Lennox Head and 20 minutes from Byron Bay, the property enjoys direct access to Angels and Shelly Beach as well as bushwalking and cycling trails weaving along the coastline. “We wanted to change the way that

Onsite catering and event coordination is provided by One Green Acre, led by international chef Sacha Meier whose private clients include Hollywood A-listers. “The main space has a living room, a dining room and a kitchen so it’s set out very much like a home but on a larger scale,” says Emma. “It’s like being invited into someone’s beach home but at the same time it’s a space where ideas and business can be discussed in a relaxed environment.” The Beach House has been extremely well received, attracting corporate clients for conferences and team building, health and yoga retreats and even fashion photoshoots. The sales campaign now creates an exciting opportunity for a new owner to walk in and grow the existing operation or repurpose the property for an entirely new endeavour. “We enjoy the process of creating something outstanding and then handing that onto someone who has more expertise in managing that,” says Tom. “Our focus now is very much on sustainable development and educational experiences with some interesting new projects in the pipeline.”

It’s like being invited into someone’s beach home but at the same time it’s a space where ideas and business can be discussed in a relaxed environment.

Kollosche’s Byron Bay agent Matthew Skene says The Beach House is unlike anything else in the region and occupies a location like no other. “Tom and Emma have done an amazing job with what they’ve created here but the property is still very much a blank canvas with plenty of potential yet,” says Matthew. “Some people might see it as a private family compound while others could look to redevelop the site for a private residence, a boutique hotel or even a high-end restaurant, all subject to council approval.” Having sold The Farm late last year, the Lanes have embraced some hard-earned downtime embarking on self-chartered sailing adventures with their children - now aged 9 to 16 - along Australia’s east coast. “We’ve all done our boat licences so it’s been just us and the four kids on the boat bouncing off the coast between Sydney and Moreton Island,” says Emma. “Our family loves an adventure. One of the reasons we moved to Byron was to get away from the city and be a family. This time has been a much-valued reminder of that.” 5

Kara is an absolute professional to deal with. Her work ethic, timeliness and dedication to her role and the greater Kollosche agency is highly admirable. I’d not only recommend the Kollosche agency to my network of friends but will highly endorse Kara to any potential clients over the years to come. This isn’t something I do lightly, but I have absolute confidence and trust in leaving any references I have in Kara’s capable hands. Everything I envisioned for our working relationship was matched with supreme customer service throughout the journey of selling our family home.

Kara was professional, highly organised, highly motivated, refreshingly confident, honest and sincere. Her knowledge of the market in the area we were selling was on point. Her ability to capture the feeling of the property in the marketing was exceptional. Kara said what she could do and went right ahead and did it with a contract 4 days after listing. All we needed to do was get out of her way and let her work! A pleasure to do business with.

Purchasing our new home was such an easy experience, Kara’s friendly, professional and organised approach was wonderful, no stress, and negotiations quickly concluded. Within less than 10 hours of viewing the property, contracts were finalised. Kara then took on the job of finding a buyer for our existing house and again her enthusiasm shone through. Kara’s attention to detail, from organising the photoshoot to screening candidates, and her friendly and comprehensive feedback was terrific. I have dealt with a lot of agents over the years however she stand heads and shoulders above them in all respects.

NEW GENERATION

BMW’s latest M series range races into the showroom.

IF BMW pitches itself as a sporting make, nothing has represented that image better for the past 35 years than the M3 model. The popular M3 sedan and sibling M4 coupe sit atop the compact 3 Series range as performance flagships for the entire brand. Demonstrating this, the M3/4 has won four of the five annual Bathurst 6-Hour races for standard production cars. The first four cars in this year’s race were M3s or M4s. Clearly, the cars’ speed, reliability and durability can’t be faulted, so hopes are high for the seventh-generation range, which has just landed in showrooms. In BMW tradition, a 3.0 litre straight-six engine with twin turbochargers powers the new M cars. The ‘base’ car, priced at $144,900 for the sedan and $5,000 more for the coupe, gets 353 kiloWatts of power.

Pay a further $10,000 on sedan or coupe for the Competition version with 22 kW more power, 8-speed transmission and some other go-faster and comfort goodies. BMW follows the familiar prestige manufacturer maxim that less weight costs more. If you’re serious about doing track days, you may option ceramic brakes ($16,500), carbonfibre body parts ($9500), lightweight seats ($7500) and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres ($2000). You’ll want them all to win Bathurst next year.

TEST DRIVE TODAY Gold Coast BMW Dealer Principal Shane Parkins is excited to welcome the all-new M3 sedan and M4 coupe to the Southport showroom. “With the launch of the two coolest cars of the decade and advancements in the BMWi range with the launch of the new BMW iX, never has there been a more impressive BMW Range to showcase,” says Shane. “The M3 & M4 personally blow me away and I cannot wait to hit the track in the finest in German engineering – pedal to the metal.” From the exceptional car range, to the efficient servicing department and outstanding customer service – it’s all included in the Gold Coast BMW experience. “If you want to test drive one of these stunning new generation models, please contact us today,” says Shane. “I look forward to welcoming you into the dealership and providing you with the luxurious, 5-star experience that you deserve.”

MARINE SHOWCASE This year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show is gearing up to be one of the biggest in recent history.

FEATURING HUNDREDS of boats and marine products – and with more than 45,000 visitors and 330 exhibitors across four action-packed days – Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) is a truly stunning showcase of Australian and international brands. SCIBS General Manager Johan Hasser said the quality and stature of this year’s Show, which will run from 20 – 23 May, is exceptional. “There’s no doubt that 2021 is shaping up to be one of our biggest Shows, not only in terms of the sheer number of boats and the quality of exhibitors we continue to attract, but also when looking at the expanded footprint and the number of visitors expected through the gates,” he says.

66 covemagazine.com.au

Celebrating its 32nd edition, the event will host on-water displays from brands such as Maritimo, Horizon Yacht, Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Riviera, Sunseeker, Princess Yachts, Integrity Motor Yachts, Whitehaven Motor Yachts, Ocean Alexander, Fleming, Lagoon, Grand Banks, Azimut, Jeanneau, Leopard and Prestige Yachts. “To have a significant congregation of the world’s leading brands together at SCIBS is a great vote of confidence for the industry and we know visitors will be impressed by the quality and diversity of boats on display across every category,” Johan says. Major marques will feel right at home in the world-class Sanctuary Cove Marina, which

recently underwent a $10 million redevelopment including the addition of a superyacht arm. It has been awarded Platinum Gold Anchor accreditation by the Marina Industries Association (MIA), making it one of only eight marinas worldwide to be recognised with such status. Visitors can expect to see an exceptional line-up of multi-million-dollar superyachts following the Federal Government’s announcement of quarantine-free access for vessels and passengers travelling from New Zealand. Local experts in design and luxury, Maritimo, has announced that the brand will host the worldwide launches of two spectacular new motor yachts – the M55 and the S55 – at SCIBS.

“We are extremely excited to be globally launching two groundbreaking new vessels, combined with our other M-Series and X-Series models,” said Maritimo’s Director of Design Tom Barry-Cotter. “After a virtual launch in 2020, the new M55 Flybridge is set to be the most anticipated global launch for Maritimo to date. “Guests at the Show will be among the first to step aboard the long awaited sensational new flybridge motor yacht.” Luxury yacht builder Horizon is also offering an impressive showcase this year, with plans to officially unveil the Horizon FD87 Skyline at the Show. “The model, which is one of the most popular Horizon models to date, is a special edition Cor D Rover Design,” says Horizon Yacht Australia’s Director Mark Western “At an overall length of 90’ and a 23’ 3” beam, the enclosed sky lounge features an on-deck master stateroom, High Performance Piercing bow and hull design, tremendous interior volume, helipad on the roof and heated jacuzzi on the bow. “The team is excited to showcase our quality products and to catch up with our customers on a business and personal level. “We often have interstate clients popping in to see us at big events like SCIBS, so it's a great opportunity for us to catch up with them and share the latest updates from Horizon.” Palm Beach Motor Yachts will debut the impressive GT60, which will become the new flagship model of the brand’s modern sports line-up. “As well as launching the GT60, Grand Banks Yachts will be bringing the GB60 long-distance cruiser to SCIBS, showcasing the most fuelefficient model in its class, capable of speeds in the mid-thirties and a cruising range of around 2,000 nautical miles at 10 knots,” said Palm Beach Motor Yachts’ Creative Director Joel Butler. “The camaraderie and competition in the Australian marine industry is first class, and we love showing off our new designs and innovations, just as much as learning about what others in the industry are doing.” In line with this year’s premium showcase, SCIBS will also be offering a range of new VIP experiences tailored to exhibitors and visitors who may be interested in exploring the boating lifestyle in lavish luxury. THE MARK OF ENDURANCE

This Hampton Endurance 750 is build number 25 by Leigh-Smith Yachts.

THE SURE-FOOTED broad-shouldered Endurance 750, based on the traditional trawler, is a proven design developed to work in various conditions. The owner of the latest launched E750 is from the Apple Isle. As a long-time owner of an Endurance 650 Pilothouse, he had a lot of input into the build, blending everything he loved about the E650 with his ambitions on the E750. Working closely with Dean from LeighSmith Yachts, the project evolved into his ideal package. Travel limitations of 2020 that came along mid-build ended up streamlining the construction and delivery process. Leigh-Smith Yacht's marine consultants and surveyors guided the build process weekly, and sometimes daily, through video conferencing. While the Endurance 750 may look every bit like the traditional long-range cruiser in design, it's the class-leading size of the sky lounge and big ship thinking that set it apart. Surrounded by the complete walk-around decks of the dual Portuguese bridges, this is no ordinary vessel. Solid foundations, cloaked in kevlar armour and a high brow to meet the oncoming sea, look very reassuring to explore beyond the horizon. This particular Endurance has an upgraded timber package with beautifully matched grains and impeccable craftsmanship skills on display.

68 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 84

The timberwork throughout the boat is an example of the builders flexing their skills. There are masterful dovetail joins, intricate detail and flowing curves that only skilled craftspeople can achieve. Triple 26-inch Garmin multifunction displays keep all monitoring, navigation, and engine management on hand, while the newly designed tender fuel storage system allows owners to carry, store and lift on board up to 300 litres of fuel without the back-breaking exercise of carrying it up to the flybridge. Stepping inside the salon exudes elegance and comfort. To port, quality leather covers the sumptuous lounge while large picture windows bring in the view. Occasional chairs to starboard are either side of the saloon amenities centre, which also houses the same pop-up 55inch smart tv and pro audio as the sky lounge. There is permanent dining table seating eight with a full-service bar opposite packed with all the equipment and counter space to operate while entertaining. The fully equipped country kitchen is thoughtfully laid out with enough space to satisfy demanding chefs. The bar, dining and galley triangle create a unique and interactive dynamic seamlessly flexing the space between entertaining and daily life aboard.

A well-crafted custom handrail leads down to the accommodation’s foyer with an inlaid marble floor. Forward is the inviting, warm timber-lined VIP guest stateroom with a sumptuous island bed and a beautifully appointed ensuite bathroom. The full-beam master stateroom with kingsized island bed has a beautiful lounge covered in the same exquisite leather found throughout the vessel. It leads back to the desirable sized master bathroom with twin sinks. On the port side, a desk/vanity gives plenty of space while the cedar-lined walk-in wardrobe has ample room for an extensive wardrobe. The third cabin, with a queen bed and ensuite, is finished to the same high standard, while the fourth cabin allows the flexibility to house a crew or captain. There's also a crew mess which houses the ship's laundry equipment. The customisation options and how closely the team at Leigh-Smith Yachts work with every customer on every build is why so many owners return to build another majestic vessel bearing the trident, the mark of Endurance. For more information about the stunning range of Hampton Endurance Range of Motor Yachts, see the Australian and New Zealand dealer Leigh-Smith Yachts in the heart of Sanctuary Cove Marine Village.

TOP-DOWN MOTORING MG reveal a concept design for a futuristic new roadster called the Cyberster. WORDS CHRIS NIXON WITHOUT A HINT of sporting DNA in its history, China’s biggest car-maker, the State-owned Shanghai Motor Corporation (SAIC), has not only retrieved Britain’s beloved MG from the edge of extinction but also made it more successful than ever. MG sold over 15,000 new vehicles in Australia last year – many more than it did during its original hey-days – but enthusiasts hoping for a new sports car have found the iconic octagonal MG badge instead on a range of affordable family hatchbacks and SUVs. But the glorious days of top-down motoring in a British sports car could be returning and, again, it will be thanks to the Chinese. SAIC has used the recent Shanghai motor show to reveal a concept design for a new MG roadster. Possible production hasn’t even been mentioned, but MG didn’t put the concept out

there for nothing and you can bet something is in the pipeline. However, it will be a very different car to past MGs, as its futuristic name, Cyberster, implies. No more shiny upright grilles, leaky softtops, rorty exhausts or wire wheels, the new MG roadster will be a stealthily-quiet, high-tech road missile. Its performance will be literally electric, in fact. The Cyberster might come from a Chinese manufacturer, but its inspiration apparently is pure-Brit from the MG Advanced Design Centre in London. This sounds a promising plan: British design executed with Chinese efficiency. Accordingly, MG says the Cyberster takes some styling cues from the classic MGB, which ended production 1980.

Yes, looking at the concept photos we can see it indeed does have wheels at each corner, two doors, headlights and no roof. But any other heritage cues seem pure fantasy. Traditionally, manufacturers use motor show concepts to get public feedback about the design and the market potential. Even in watered-down production form the Cyberster should get a huge welcome, but if the looks aren’t enough the performance claims should swing it: powered by only electricity, the concept for the MG of the future is said to hit 100 kmh in less than three seconds and run for up to 800 kms on a single charge. The downside? Don’t expect another affordable runabout.

X FACTOR

Chris Nixon explores the luxury sub-brand car market.

WHAT DO YOU DO when you want a new car and COVID has hacked mercilessly at your retirement investments or your business income has dropped becuase of the pandemic? Adjust your sights, of course. More than a few drivers in the recent past, including a couple of colleagues who formerly drove Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, have become enthusiastic owners of the Koreanbuilt Kia Stinger GT. For those who don't know it, the aptly-named Stinger is a head-turning, mid-size sedan that goes more like a BMW than a Kia. For less than $64,000 RRP, it delivers a 0-100 kmh time under five seconds, nifty roadholding and a seven-year warranty. This article isn’t about the Stinger, but it’s the car that has cracked open the door to a wider view of alternatives to the usual choice of European prestige nameplates. Heard of Genesis?

74 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 84

You certainly will if the company follows through into production with the X Concept just revealed at the Shanghai motor show. Genesis is to Hyundai what Lexus is to Toyota – a luxury sub-brand (don’t mention Nissan’s Infiniti, which has failed twice in the Australian market). It’s gained headlines around the world because not many people realised a Korean manufacturer was capable of producing a striking, electric-powered, two-door GT coupe. The X Concept could be a suitable flagship stablemate to the Hyundai-made Genesis cars already on sale in Australia. Again, too few people know about the G70 and G80 sedans and GV80 SUV, but media reviewers have offered plenty of praise for their value and quality compared to traditional Europeans. Buyers seeking something a little different to the German Big Three will find plenty to like

in Genesis, especially when the just-revealed pure-electric G80 lands here early next year. While the Genesis X Concept coupe is still only a concept, the queue of buyers for Kia’s EV6 should be instant and long – because while it has the dazzling looks of a motor show concept, it’s in fact the production-ready version due on sale in the third quarter of this year. If the Stinger turned heads when it reached Australia in 2018, the EV6 should move image perceptions of Korean cars a big step forward. There’s no word on price yet, but estimates have suggested at least $100,000. And wouldn’t you pay that for something that looked so sharp, reached 100 kmh in 3.5 seconds and ran up to 510 kms on a single battery charge? Most people know that Hyundai and Kia motor vehicles are cousins under the skin, coming from the same vast Hyundai industrial corporation that also builds everything from high-speed trains to supertankers.

Unsurprisingly, their product ranges are similar – if outwardly different – across most vehicle segments, meaning there’s nothing surer than that we can soon look forward to Hyundai’s own take on the Kia EV6 built around the group’s first dedicated EV chassis. It’s the chassis that allows the EV6 to look so different. While many Luddites wring their hands about the arrival of all-electric power, designers are enjoying unprecedented scope to improve the shape, interior space and dynamics without the need to place bulky and redundant internal combustion engines, multi-speed gearboxes, differentials and fuel tanks. It’s an exciting time for the automotive industry. Whatever your preferred make, it will have an electric car soon. The Koreans, along with the Chinese and Japanese, are going to be fast off the grid to persuade you it’s one of theirs.

ENCORE EXPERIENCE Lexus Of Southport Sales Manager, Cameron Shipard, updates the luxury’s brand’s latest news, both locally and Australia-wide.

Concept vehicle shown. Not available for purchase.

IT IS BOAT SHOW TIME AGAIN? Wow, how quickly has that come around? And what a difference a year makes. As we move further into 2021, the demand for luxury vehicles in Australia continues to increase seemingly unabated, and in some cases there is unprecedented demand that is leaving the production facilities unable to keep up. So far this year, Lexus’ take on the future of the automotive landscape has been made increasingly clear. Lexus Australia has been heavily promoting ‘Lexus Encore Platinum 2.0’ – effectively the highend brand’s take on what a luxury experience should entail. Imagine flying into Auckland Airport and having a new Lexus of your choice from virtually the entire range available for your complimentary use for eight days. Need an eight-seater SUV in Sydney? The LX570 is there and waiting.

76 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 84

Fancy a luxury convertible for a week transiting Melbourne? The LC500 C is ready to go. Such is the Lexus on Demand Program. In addition, Lexus Encore Platinum includes complimentary Westfield Valet Parking vouchers. A standard inclusion on all ‘L’ and ‘F’ Series cars, i.e. the flagship and performance vehicles, Lexus Encore Platinum is also currently available on a line of Limited Edition ‘Crafted’ Models. Also recently unveiled was the Lexus LF Z – a concept (although, almost production ready), full battery electric vehicle. This high-performance ultra-luxury electric vehicle is slated for a circa 2025 release, however, a number of the concept features will surely begin to appear on some of the range in the meantime. Locally our infrastructure is being put in to place to support the release of the Full Electric Lexus UX300e this year,

This will include charging stations in our carpark, workshop and showroom. The reality of the roll out of full electric vehicles is becoming very apparent … it is no longer somewhere down the track, it is now. I certainly look forward to a Full Electric Vehicle’s seamless drive and performance with Lexus renowned build quality and attention to detail, as well the aftersales service that is second to none. The Gold Coast is certainly pumping again, with so many new people arriving from interstate and overseas to begin their new lives here and why not? What an amazing place to live, well and truly highlighted by our amazing run over the past 12 months in comparison to most other regions. Long may it continue, and we are praying for a speedy recovery from the effects of COVID-19, for the rest of Australia and the world.

GOOD AS GOLD

The rising apartment boom driving the Gold Coast market.

WORDS NICK NICHOLS IT’S NO SECRET that the Australian residential property market is currently running hot. House prices nationally grew at their fastest pace in more than 32 years during March with CoreLogic’s monthly property price index showing a 2.8 per cent gain. Annual growth is now at 6.2 per cent. Regional centres rose 11.4 per cent, or well over double the combined growth of 4.8 per cent for the capital cities. The apartment markets of Sydney and Melbourne are the main weak spots. Melbourne has the highest rental vacancy rate in the country, weighed down by its inner-city apartment glut. However, not all apartment markets are created equally. On the Gold Coast, high demand is exceeding supply. The latest apartment insights report by consultancy Urbis revealed sales of apartments

78 covemagazine.com.au

– Issue 84

on the Gold Coast were at their highest level in four years in the final quarter of last year. The research was notable for its finding that buyers were hitting hurdles in a tightening of supply. While the Gold Coast construction market currently appears to be active, developers actually delivered about a third fewer apartments in 2020 than in 2019. Urbis identified 22 projects that were underway last year, only slightly down from 24 the year before. The problem for buyers looking for a foothold in the market is the trend towards smaller, boutique lifestyle developments has created far fewer apartments as a result. There were just 1411 new apartments built on the Gold Coast last year, down from 2164 in 2019. With 374 apartments sold in the December quarter, demand is nudging ahead of supply, according to Urbis.

The analysis indicates the Gold Coast has a nine-month supply of apartments, but that doesn’t take into account new projects ready to start. The numbers anecdotally highlight the unprecedented migration of people from capital cities to regional centres and between regions across Australia. The Housing Industry Association (HIA) is currently examining this trend and its impact on the industry over the longer term. “The dynamic has been very difficult to quantify,” says HIA chief economist Tim Reardon. “It’s certainly one of the factors driving house prices and really tight rental markets at the moment.” But the latest ABS data shows there is a rapid catch-up taking place. Australia is in the midst of a new building boom, thanks in part to the federal government’s HomeBuilder grant which has now ended.

The number of dwellings approved nationally in February jumped 21.6 per cent month-onmonth to 19,422, the highest of any month since the ABS began tracking the data in 1983. This is being led by demand for detached housing. The HIA has forecast a record 130,000 detached homes will be built Australia-wide this year. But according to Reardon, the conditions we face now are different to 2018 when a then record of 122,000 homes were built. He says the demand experienced in 2018 was short of the record number of homes that were being built. This year demand is running ahead of the HIA’s peak supply target. While the building boom may ease price pressures in some areas, the Gold Coast faces constraints of its own in delivering detached housing to meet demand.

Due to the state government’s current urban planning framework, the Gold Coast doesn’t have the luxury of wholesale homeand-land development which is putting upward pressure on detached housing values in key infill development areas. Demand for luxury apartments continues unabated and is pushing developers into a fiercely competitive environment to secure new sites. Prices of $16,000 per square metre or more are being achieved for detached homes in prime locations along coastal suburbs for multi-storey developments. The knock-on effect is being felt across the market. The most recent data from Real Estate Institute of Queensland revealed median house prices on the Gold Coast were up 7.7 per cent in the December quarter and up 6.1 per cent over the year.

The gain over the quarter is the telling figure as it shows an acceleration of price growth for detached houses towards the end of 2020. Median apartment prices were up 2.1 per cent for the December quarter and 5.5 per cent for the year – an equally solid result. “Underlying housing demand and strong rental market conditions are likely to see the Gold Coast unit market move into rising market conditions in the short to medium term,” says the REIQ in its latest Queensland Market Monitor report. The implications of this are that detached housing in central locations on the Gold Coast will continue to perform well as developers eye more infill opportunities to meet that expected demand.

2021 MARKET UPDATE WITH STEVE HUNT | MEDIAHUNT.COM.AU

LET THE GAMES BEGIN

If we win on July 22, we are in for a decade that we will never forget.

488 Perspective

Hemingway, Palm Beach

STRAP YOURSELF in Southeast Queensland. On July 22, Queensland will learn whether it has earned the right to host the Olympic Games in 2032. My mail is we are a shoe in. If you think the post-pandemic boom currently being experienced in the region is a light about to flicker out, think of an eternal Olympic flame. In my view, this boom has only just started and could run well into the next decade. Sun and freedom starved Victorians are finding their nirvana in the pristine beaches of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. Sydneysiders have cottoned onto the fact that they can work remotely and enjoy a lifestyle that is truly the envy of the world in a bubble that is also the envy of the world. Look at our beaches. Look at our golf courses. Look at our waterways. Look at the infrastructure improvements. In the north of the Gold Coast we have the Coomera Connector under construction, which will cut drive times to the central Gold Coast to around 15 minutes. On the completion of the Cross River Rail, it will take less than 40 minutes to access the Brisbane CBD from Hope Island. On the southern Gold Coast, the M1 is being fast tracked to Tugun – completing a missing link which will effectively conclude the $15 billion dual carriageway project connecting Sydney to Brisbane. Then there’s light rail, although I am hearing there are issues around transparency of information and certainty over contracts which may cause delays to future stages.

When rental vacancy rates are around 0.5 per cent and developers are selling out of beachfront apartments prior to receiving official development approval from council, you know something special is going on here. Record prices are being achieved for properties, including in Brisbane which is tremendously undervalued. Here are some examples: A record price of $5 million achieved in Tallebudgera Valley for a home on a 10-acre flat property fronting the Tallebudgera Creek. The property was purchased in 2011 for $1.4 million and a new award-winning home built. A nice handy profit of $2.6 million. A used beachfront sub-penthouse at Burleigh Heads sold for more than $12,000 a square metre – the price normally reserved for new beachfront stock. A luxury Burleigh Heads apartment on The Esplanade purchased in 2016 for $750,000 sold for $1.85 million. These are ridiculous price hikes in such a short space of time, driven by demand. Projects like S and S Projects selling out its $74 million Flow Residences at Rainbow Bay an average price of $3.5 million prior to commencement of construction; KTQ Group selling its entire 118 apartments in Miles Residences, part of the re-development of the Kirra Beach Hotel, in just over three months; Brisbane’s Spyre Group selling its entire $181 million portfolio of product to the extent it is racing to bring new stock to the market. Then there’s Sherpa Property Group selling out of its $36 million 488 Perspective in less than three months, primary to locals, for prices ranging between $3.1 million and $4.5 million.

Regal Residences, Southport

At the time of print, Allure Property Corporation was reporting $55 million in sales in its 88 Burleigh project after entering the market only four weeks earlier. Hirsch and Faigen’s Hemingway at Palm Beach is also reporting incredible sales with a DA pending – incredible stuff. This isn’t PR puff. These are real sales, to real people who are either cashed up locals downsizing or interstate buyers getting out of Sydney and Melbourne (predominantly Sydney) and seeing great value on the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Then there’s the renaissance of the Southport CBD with the visionary Roberto Badalotti’s $2.3 billion Imperial Square, the first stage of which has almost sold out, is under construction and about to get a hotel operator. So what’s next? Brisbane, that’s what’s next. Incredibly undervalued when compared with the southern states and a vibrant city with developments like Queens Wharf, the new airport runway and a range of new projects. Pikos Group will soon launch the Queen of all residential apartment projects in Brisbane, the luxury Skye apartments on a site once earmarked for a luxury Banyan Tree resort. Skye will symbolise the spread of the luxury downsizer market into Brisbane – a market that will only strengthen after July 22 – assuming we win the Olympics bid. The pandemic that caused fear is now causing an exciting, cataclysmic shift that, of any part of Australia, Southeast Queensland is being the most notable beneficiary.

PLANNING DREAMS

Three ways an architect can make your dream home a reality. AN ARCHITECT can help you make your dream home a reality. Whether you're building a new home or renovating, architects have more experience in design and construction than any other building professional. Working with an architect has many benefits but here’s three you need to know about. 1. IMPROVE YOUR LIFESTYLE When you hire an architect, they will get to know you and find ways to improve your lifestyle. Need more storage in your kitchen or more natural light in your bathroom? Whatever you want, your architect can help you improve your home and life, often in ways you may never have thought of before. 2. TAKE THE STRESS AWAY Architects are professional problem solvers that know the construction industry inside out. Their experience and expertise will be your greatest asset. They can handle the paperwork, deal with the builders and source materials so you can get on with living your life. 3. SAVE MONEY An architect’s experience and insight can help stretch your budget and add value to your home. They will find the best materials, finishes, fittings to match your taste and budget. But saving money doesn’t just happen during construction of your home. Architects will maximise the energy efficiency of your home and reduce your energy bills. Architects are highly trained and multi-skilled. They design many different buildings on the Gold Coast including healthcare, education, local businesses and public spaces for everyone’s benefit. LUXURY LIVING

LIFE IS BETTER BY THE WATER The Gold Coast has emerged as a leading lifestyle haven off the back of COVID-19 and the appetite for waterfront property has never been greater.

21 Saxonvale Terrace, Mermaid Waters

WORDS JANELLE ESTREICH LATE ON A SUNNY Sunday afternoon, a crowd gathers on the tiled terrace of 34 Bulolo Avenue in the northern Gold Coast suburb of Runaway Bay. Set on a point position and facing due north to the Broadwater and South Stradbroke Island, all eyes are on the spectacular expanse of sparkling blue in every direction. On any other day, kids might be splashing in the pool while parents sip drinks with friends or take their time unpacking the boat after a day on the water. But today there is tension in the air as 11 would-be buyers line up for a tilt at the five-bedroom residence boasting 38 metres of water frontage, one of the widest in the area. An opening bid of $2,500,000 sets off a flurry of activity, the auctioneer working overtime to call some 68 bids in just over 17 minutes before the hammer finally drops at $3,950,000. The result stuns everyone present, including the buyer – who exceed their pre-auction price limit by $500,000 – and the seller who yielded $950,000 above their reserve price and a staggering $1,225,000 more than they had paid for the property only seven months earlier.

– Issue 84

The scene is familiar enough across the Gold Coast as the demand for blue chip property surges in the 12 months since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis. And while sunshine, the city’s safe-haven status, and a laid back culture are part of the allure, when it comes to real estate the three major draw cards are water, lifestyle and sand. “Australia’s love affair with waterfront living is stronger than ever,” says Michael Kollosche, Managing Director of prestige property agency Kollosche, who has been selling the city’s best waterfront real estate for more than two decades. “Australians associate lifestyle with water, the beach and that seachange opportunity and homes on the water have become ‘lifestyle havens’. “What greater luxury is there than the ability to walk out your back door and jump on a jet ski or grab your surfboard and step straight onto the sand?” Data from property listings platform realestate.com.au (REA) shows that search activity for homes by the water or beach increased by more than 30 per cent in the six months to December 2020.

Southern and central beachside suburbs are high on the hit list, with Tugun, Mermaid Beach, Palm Beach, Burleigh Waters, Currumbin, Miami and Mermaid Waters among the top 10 most searched suburbs. “The Gold Coast has always been a very popular area for buyers and COVID-19 has accelerated this interest,” says REA Chief Economist Nerida Conisbee. “The combination of people working remotely, so they’re not tied to a capital city, and also searching for more space and a better lifestyle is really driving people to the Gold Coast.” And lifestyle-driven buyers aren’t afraid to splash the cash. When compared to pre-pandemic times, views on properties priced $1,000,000 and above have risen by 6.6 percent while those shopping for homes priced over $10 million has surged by a whopping 150 per cent. While some of those searches could be attributed to lockdown dreaming, record price points suggest that buyers are prepared to pay a premium for lifestyle real estate. The Broadbeach Waters main river estate at 297-299 Monaco Street owned by Gold Coast

34 Bulolo Avenue, Runaway Bay

'Tidemark' 45-51 Albatross Avenue, Mermaid Beach

power couple Billy and Jackie Cross fetched $12,500,000 in January while the same month another main river estate at 139-141 Monaco Street achieved a street and suburb record of $12,800,000. In February a Melbourne buyer paid $15,750,000 for a four-level beachfront home on Hedges Avenue in Mermaid Beach, with all sales handled by Kollosche. Earlier this year Kollosche set a new record inside Palazzo Versace where an interstate buyer paid $6,420,000 for a penthouse with a large marina berth. Last month a tri-level waterfront entertainer at 21 Saxonvale Terrace, with pontoon and jet ski dock, sold for $3,410,000 in a new suburb record for Mermaid Waters. “Even at the top end of town we’re handling more enquiries, seeing greater numbers at open homes and registering more bidders at auction than ever before,” says Michael. “That level of competition combined with low stock levels and record-low interest rates is fueling a frenzy of buying activity and exceptional sale prices. “The flight to luxury and lifestyle is very much tied to property on the water – be that the beach, main river, canal or lakeside – and the Gold Coast is fortunate enough to have it all.” Closed international borders and a concerted push to ‘holiday at home’ is also driving demand for lock and leave luxury apartments in key waterside locations on the Gold Coast. Interstate and Brisbane buyers are snapping up well-appointed weekenders, but locals are very much in the mix too, trading large established homes for spacious apartments in residents-only boutique buildings. Off-the-plan apartments in projects such as White Main Beach have sold out in the past four months with buyers excited by the prospect of walking to the beach and Tedder Avenue for coffee, skipping over to Marina Mirage to launch the cruiser or to indulge in a spot of shopping. Similarly, the lure of lakeside living has seen a run of sales in The Lanes Residences – part of the Sunland Groups’ master-planned community The Lakes in Mermaid Waters – where limited stock remains inside two high-end apartment towers. “That lifestyle where you can wake up to water with close amenities is very appealing and people have fast-tracked plans to relocate or buy that second residence,” says Michael. “The water becomes an extension of your home and a licence to indulge a lifestyle that lends itself to watersports, fishing, boating and outdoor entertaining. “Even with the current price growth, Gold Coast real estate offers exceptional value for money when compared to buying on or near the water in most other Australian cities.”

PERFECTLY CLEAR

Enhance your project’s look and feel with the installation of Euroglass products.

FOUNDED BY PETER AND JANE CONDON in 1989, Euroglass is the original frameless shower screen company in Queensland. Their passion and dedication have seen the business grow into a large installation and manufacturing team, with a reputation for first class service and products. “All the finest sales talk in the world will not substitute for quality,” says Peter. “Our success has come from keeping the highest level of quality for the end user to enjoy for many years. “We also have our own design and installation teams and provide experienced guidance to tradesmen and architects,” he adds. Constantly innovating and adding new frameless glass products, Euroglass now have the widest range on the market in Queensland. The black industrial warehouse look is very popular at the moment and Euroglass have embraced the trend, developing products that can be used in any room of the house including bathrooms, kitchens and living areas. Also enjoying a resurgence is ‘Fantasy Glass’. Euroglass have recently introduced this patterned glass into the Australian market from Europe. Only limited by your imagination, it’s a clever amalgamation of aesthetics and functionality with a multitude of artistic patterns embossed on ultra clear low iron glass. When it comes to bathrooms, Euroglass showerscreens not only look good, they offer the ultimate peace of mind.

Made from safety glass and reliable hardware, and installed with precision to ensure no leaks or gaps, these quality products add a stylish finish to any wet area. Frameless glass balustrades and staircases, either inside or out, exude a sense of space and light. They allow uninterrupted views while at the same time feeling safe and secure. The same goes for pool fencing. Frameless options add another dimension to your overall landscaping design rather than just being a barrier to comply with regulations. If you are looking for an eye-catching feature in any room of the home why not install an all-glass wine cellar? Available in a variety of glass tints and patterns with condensation resistant, thematic controlling binding interlayers, your guests will be wowed by the spectacle of wine bottles seemingly suspended in mid-air. Other products offered by Euroglass include stacker doors, decorative mirrors, glass splashbacks, pool windows and more. A true one stop shop, they are also the only frameless glass company with its own glass processing factory in-house. Employing the most experienced installation team and the most innovative design team in the state, Euroglass has worked on projects from one single panel to entire hotels over the past 32 years. “Euroglass controls the entire process from design, manufacturing and installation to aftermarket service and ongoing support,” says Peter.

COLLAGEN

BEAUTY

IMMUNE

Collagen is the latest health beauty trend that supports and improves hair, skin, nails, gut and joint health with several different types of collagen to target individual health benefits. For example, Nutra Organics Collagen Beauty targets hair, skin and nails, Collagen Body targets bone health and Collagen Build targets muscle. If you are looking to support bone and joint health and maintaining healthy cartilage production, then you would prefer the ATP Jolt formulation with the specific hydrolysed collagen peptides for joints, tendons and ligament support.

Nutra organics have now introduced a one-of-a-kind facial mist with their unique Sol-C® micro collagen peptides that significantly improves skin hydration, barrier function and increases collagen synthesis. Did you know that over 75% of our skin is made up of collagen, which begins to degenerate in our mid-twenties and can be accelerated by other lifestyle and environmental factors, such as the sun and air pollution? Simply spritz onto clean skin, face, neck and décolletage, any time of day for fresh and glowing skin!

With winter just around the corner, we have a vast range of supplements to help support your immune health this winter. Supplements such as Vitamin C, Echinacea, Olive leaf, Zinc and Andrographis not only provide support for cold and flu symptoms but will also reduce the severity of symptoms such as runny nose, cough and sore throat.

GEMINI 22 May – 21 Jun

The eclipse season will prompt you to make extensive changes in your life. Your relationships may change radically. You'll gain insight into exactly how this will occur around the lunar eclipse and supermoon on May 26, especially if it's your birthday then or at the solar eclipse on June 10. For some, a fresh work or health routine will require you to be more adaptable.

LIBRA 24 Sept – 23 Oct

AQUARIUS 21 Jan – 19 Feb

CANCER 22 Jun – 23 Jul

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov

Considerable changes at home and in your personal life will merit careful focus. A major turning point at the end of May and/or mid-June will provide a sense of direction. This phase could be particularly busy or stressful health-wise, so ensure you have a solid, secure health regime in place. The eclipse season will ask that you're flexible with shared duties.

PISCES 20 Feb – 20 Mar

Much of the change during the upcoming eclipse season will revolve around your status, activities and career. If you work with others, you may wish to be more independent. And, if you're selfemployed, you may wish to consider teamwork and collaborations more now. The eclipses will spotlight new opportunities at work and in your health routine. Consider diversifying.

VIRGO 24 Aug – 23 Sept

CAPRICORN 23 Dec – 20 Jan

TAURUS 21 Apr – 21 May

Prepare for developments financially and in your personal life during May and June as changes will spotlight the way you share resources — anything from money to space at home. Major developments are likely with property or family, so it's important to find ways to gain the peace you crave. An uncertain work or health situation will benefit from a pragmatic approach.

The upcoming eclipse season will focus your attention on your personal life, especially your love life and family. You may wish to make considerable changes but must avoid doing so for the sake of it, especially in June, as you may be tempted to act first and repent at leisure! Jupiter may contribute to making you idealistic about relationships, so be realistic now.

Prepare for changes in your personal life or at work. Unexpected developments will remind you how important your health and relationships are in your daily routine. Changes are most likely end of May and in mid-June. The more you seek to establish a solid platform that allows you flexibility to look after your health and well-being or that of someone close, the better for you.

You have been undergoing lessons in relationship skills this year, and this is certainly a good time to perfect your skills, as the eclipse season in May and June will spotlight communications both at home and at work. In addition, Jupiter will be encouraging you to be idealistic in your relationships and also a perfectionist, so remember to keep your feet on the ground.

The eclipse season will be across your health zone, so it's vital you take time out for your health. Stress points financially in mid-June needn't get in the way of an otherwise excellent period for career advancement, so keep an eye out for new opportunities. Uncertainty over domestic or work matters also needn't get in the way of your daily happiness. Find ways to find peace.

The eclipses on May 26 and June 10 will help facilitate a steep learning curve. Study, longdistance travel, and even legal matters will all represent a key learning curve in your life. An adversarial approach to organisations, friends and groups will only work for you if you are resilient to opposition and can persuade others of your wisdom. Aim to work together rather than apart.

The eclipse season over the next two months spells considerable changes in your fortunes, so ensure you're adaptable about new financial ideas and projects. Be prepared to forge fresh agreements and arrangements both financially and in your personal life to ensure you are in a strong position. Be particularly attentive to the details, as otherwise these could trip you up.

Change is going to affect many areas of your life – from your personal life to work. You may feel at a crossroads, beginning over May and June in the eclipse season. The first eclipse, the total lunar eclipse and supermoon on May 26, will spotlight your personal arrangements and relationships the second, your finances and status. Be prepared to embrace change.
