You Can Have It All!

Celebrity engagements get attention! Magazine coverage gives us a steady diet of mega-diamond engagement rings, and it’s easy to believe that these sizes are the norm. But when couples start the search for an engagement ring, it can often be an eye-opening experience when they find rings they desire and then start to reconcile their budget to match. The gap between what they want and what they can afford can be wide. There are many tips on buying a diamond. Want a brighter, whiter stone of better quality? You can trade down on size! Want a larger diamond? You can trade down on quality! But what if you could have a brighter, whiter looking diamond AND one that looks up to 60 percent larger? Sounds like it might meet both desires! Christopher Slowinski, who founded Christopher Designs, originally trained as an engineer. He started to apply engineering principles to the cutting of a diamond. After studying light performance and refraction of light within a diamond, then exacting the proportions and angles of the facets, he made a brilliant discovery. A diamond, like an iceberg, carries significant size and weight below what can be seen from the top. In the case of an iceberg, that’s the waters surface. In the case of a diamond that area is called “the girdle”—the widest point of the stone and usually the

point below which you cannot see any more of the diamond. Below the girdle, the bottom of a diamond contains a lot of the weight, but it’s usually not seen once the diamond is set. When buying a diamond, a key factor in price (one of the 4 Cs) is carat weight. Even though one may not see any of the diamond below the girdle, one pays for it! Slowinski discovered that if proportions and facets were modified to precise angles and sizes, the light return would be superior AND it would not be necessary to have so much weight hidden in a place it wouldn’t be seen. The result? A brighter, whiter-looking diamond that is larger in surface area than other diamonds of equal carat weight. L’Amour Crisscut diamonds, available in a variety of shapes, place more of the diamond into the visible area, resulting in a diamond that appears 30-60 percent larger. The size difference is astonishing when a 1.00 ct. L’Amour Crisscut diamond is compared to its generic counterpart. Another benefit of the cut is that the diamond appears whiter and brighter, bursting with color and sparkle! Because of Slowinski’s discovery, couples no longer need to choose either a larger diamond or a brighter, whiter look. They can have both!

Christopher Designs sets these sparkling cuts into the most popular engagement ring styles. Learn more about Christopher Designs and the unique cuts. Visit www.christopherdesigns.com.

Saying “Yes” Mickey (my husband) caught me completely by surprise when he proposed a few days before my December birthday. I had just gotten home from work when he casually suggested I open an early gift he’d already placed under the Christmas tree. While I’ll admit it definitely looked like a jewelry box, I really wasn’t expecting it to be the jewelry box—but that’s exactly what it was. So there, in our first apartment together, Mickey took the ring from me and got down on one knee. (Seven years later, it would be my turn to surprise Mickey in that very same spot when I told him I was expecting our first baby—coincidentally due in December.) Two weeks later, when I finally came down from the high of being engaged, I quickly realized there was

Besides a classic neutral, what do you suggest for an on-trend wedding day nail color?

BEN WATTS PHOTOGRAPHER Cover and “The Suite Life” (p. 218)

What’s your best advice when it comes to wedding photos? Get to know your photographer so you feel at ease around them, and tell them to go with their gut when it comes to which photos to take. Sometimes candid shots end up being the ones people love the most. Also, try to get ready in a room packed with natural light, and ask your photographer ahead of time the best place to do a first look if you’re having one. Finally, relax and remind yourself to have fun. @wattsupphoto

Go for a metallic. Rose gold, in particular, is so chic and timeless, and flatters any complexion. For those who like to dabble on the darker side, I love a beautiful deep red, especially during the winter. For something more unique, try a white chrome nail. It’s very “unicorn” and magical. Some of my favorite standout brands are OPI, Deborah Lippmann and Essie. @nailsbymarysoul

What inspires the totally unique cakes you create for your couples?

Ahmad loves coconut cream or chocolate espresso cakes for winter

The couple themselves—we want their cake to be reflective of who they are, what they love, where they’ve been and what’s to come. We ask about everything from favorite desserts and artists to food that’s a part of their story. It’s not essential that the cake match the day’s color scheme or theme, but it often will since those are the things the couple’s drawn to. In the end, we want the cake to represent these two people, so it has to be something authentic to them. @mahzedahrbakery

IVY JACOBSON SENIOR DIGITAL EDITOR

What tips can you share for a couple getting married at city hall? City hall weddings have iconic appeal, but you should do research ahead of time for a stress-free day. They can vary in terms of rules, fees, perks (some even sell flowers) and more. New York City’s has a gift shop, so while waiting for our number to be called, we bought a magnet we now keep on our fridge as a memory of our day. It’s like a happier, more romantic version of the DMV! @ivyjacobson

FIND YOUR WEDDING STYLE We know—you’re probably figuring out where you should even start. We’ve got you covered. Once you download the app, the first thing you’ll do is swipe on images you love in our Style Quiz. It’s a fun way to help zero in on your wedding vibe. Once complete, you’ll have your very own Wedding Vision (more on that on the next page). KEEP ORGANIZED Not sure what to do when? No sweat—we’ve put together a checklist for you, and it’s totally customizable. So if Uncle Jeff is officiating, we’ll take “find an officiant” off your list. Plus, our budgeter will help you track your overall spending and how much you’ve put toward each detail. COMPILE YOUR TEAM After sharing all your info (budget, location, guest count) we’ll help you assemble your squad with personalized recs. And if you want to keep scrolling, we’ve got thousands of award-winning pros, plus reviews, on The Knot Marketplace. MANAGE YOUR REGISTRY Now for the fun part: your registries. Your people will want to shower you with gifts from “we’re engaged” to your wedding day, so keep your wish lists fully stocked right from your phone. Our universal registry tool lets you add items from anywhere you shop—so you don’t have to choose between bespoke pottery on Etsy and the latest smart home tech at Best Buy. And if you’d rather ask for cash to put toward things like your honeymoon or a home down payment, register on The Knot Newlywed Fund. THINK OF YOUR GUESTS Your wedding website is going to be your new best friend. Fill it with need-to-know info, like hotels and your registries, then share it with guests. You can stay on top of RSVPs too. And don’t forget to have guests download The Guest—a photo sharing app that will sync all of their photos in one place (it’s like a free wedding album you can see in real time!).

What kind of undergarments should I plan to wear to my dress fitting? Mark Ingram: Try to wear the same undergarments you’ll be wearing on your actual wedding day. Many gowns today have a built-in corset and bust cups (or they can be easily added), so an additional bra isn’t always necessary. Your undergarment needs will also depend on your body type, and the fabrication and structure of your gown. Ask your consultant for their recommendation before purchasing any added pieces.

Say something like, “We want our friends and family to be present at our ceremony, so we ask that you put away all cameras and cell phones. We’ve hired an amazing photographer, so don’t worry—this memory will be captured and we can’t wait to share the photos with you.” It gets the point across without cell phone shaming.

PLANNING

I’m nervous to be in front of the camera for our engagement shoot—how can I feel more comfortable? Brittny Drye: That’s totally normal. For most couples, it’s their first time getting professionally photographed, and it can feel incredibly intimidating being the sole focus of the lens. Let your photographer be your guide—trust their advice and direction when it comes to posing, even if it feels a little awkward in the moment. Just have your partner whisper something funny in your ear when it gets too uncomfortable—your natural laugh will make for a stellar photo. Also, do something for yourself so you feel amazing— buy a new outfit or get pampered with professional hair and makeup for an added confidence boost.

REGISTORY

Ann and Eric have always wanted to adopt

Growing Their Family With Their Registry How this couple is using The Knot Newlywed Fund to raise money for adoption. BY SOPHIE ROSS PHOTOGRAPH BY NATHAN WILBERG

While things like towels, bedding and kitchen appliances most likely come to mind when you hear the words “wedding registry,” you’d be remiss to believe you’re only relegated to household items when you tie the knot. Just ask Colorado-based couple Ann Bethune and Eric Wilberg, who when envisioning their future together, knew they wanted one thing more than anything: a family. And while the couple plans to try to have their own biological children, both Ann and Eric have always wanted to give someone extra special their love too by adopting. With the average cost of adoption in the US nearing $40,000, according to AmericanAdoptions.com, the couple decided to dedicate their registry—via The Knot Newlywed WE SEE Fund—to making their dream a reality. THEIR BACKSTORY

THE VALUE OF PROVIDING STABLE AND SUPPORTIVE HOMES TO CHILDREN.

It’s fitting Ann and Eric met at a charity fundraiser for Children’s Hospital Colorado, where Ann works as a neonatal intensive care nurse. Eric was also working in the same industry as a health care management consultant. “We were each at the fundraiser with our own group of friends but started talking casually, and soon separated ourselves and talked for several hours,” Eric says. “We realized we had a great connection and each of us had all the qualities the other person was looking for in a partner.” Their relationship took off from there, and the couple realized—and discussed at length—that they shared a vision of what their future family would look like too. More specifically, they knew they were on the same page about adoption, thanks to their respective work in the health care industry combined with various volunteering opportunities they both participated in. “We see the value of providing stable and supportive homes to children,” Eric says. “It’s a way we’ll be able to share the love [the two of us] and our extended families have with a few more people in the world,” Eric says.

TKM18WIN_FOB_Registory.L [P].indd 50

THEIR “REGISTORY”

Ann and Eric discovered The Knot Newlywed Fund as they were setting up their wedding website and loved that it offered the flexibility to register for alternative gifts and to tell their guests what they plan to do with the funds. While they did register for a few items to update their kitchen, including flatware, glasses and an espresso maker, their main focus was on their adoption fund. “As we’re both more than a decade into our professional careers and in our thirties, we already have a lot of ‘things’ that are traditionally part of a registry,” Eric says. “We wanted to have an option to donate toward something meaningful for our future family [instead].” Ann and Eric’s family and friends have been incredibly supportive of their untraditional registry, as many of them have fostered and adopted children of their own too.

Ann and Eric said “I do” on September 8, 2018, in Lyons, Colorado, and they plan to start trying to grow their family soon. If you’d like to contribute to Ann and Eric’s adoption fund, go to TheKnot.com/us/ann-bethune-and-eric-wilberg-sep-2018/registry

Ikea Through the Ages

Beloved Swedish brand Ikea is hitting 75 years of chic, Scandi-inspired design this year. Major, right? To celebrate, it’s launching Gratulera, a golden oldies collection of its most popular products from past decades (think: mid-century side tables and mod wire armchairs) for fans to add to their home. Time to get that registry started.

Accessories designer Liv Hart’s collab with Bella Belle Shoes answers the age-old bridal fashion question: “Will I ever wear this again?” The stunning collection has two pairs of silk heels, each with three interchangeable strap options—for steppers that work for all of your wedding-related events and beyond. FRANKINCENSE:

These days, everyone’s looking for ways to get Zen—a trend that’s especially appreciated during wedding planning. We’ve tapped Sara Panton, cofounder of essential oil company Vitruvi, to concoct three blends perfect for your journey.

This sultry blend packs in all the romantic honeymoon vibes without the flame of a candle. Cedarwood and frankincense give a slightly masculine edge, while bergamot lends a cozy touch in a barely there sort of way.

LUCKY IN LOVE

Ever wonder why Southern couples bury a bottle of bourbon, or where the idea of bridesmaids comes from? Author Eleni N. Gage has the answer in her new book Lucky in Love: Traditions, Customs and Rituals to Personalize Your Wedding. The charming read pairs bespoke illustrations with a ton of info on iconic wedding traditions. Breeze through the pages and choose a few to add extra meaning to your day.

The hottest prewedding beauty treatments are designed to amp up your natural beauty—no makeup or glam team necessary. MICRONEEDLING A device with tiny needles creates micro damages in your skin, activating your body’s wound-healing system and stimulating your healthy skin cells. Besides leaving you with a dewy glow, microneedling can also correct scars and fine lines. MICROBLADING Achieve your #browgoals with this more sophisticated take on permanent makeup, where hairlike strokes are drawn onto your brow area to resemble the look of your existing brow hairs. The outcome is a series of natural-looking tattoo “hairs” that will last one to three years. LASH LIFT Like a perm for your lashes, this enhances what’s already there, without the use of mascara, falsies or extensions. Your lashes are wrapped around a rod and secured with a medical-safe glue. Then, a special solution is applied, which causes them to dramatically curl up. Results last from six to eight weeks.

JEWELRY INSURANCE 101 It might not rank at the top of your wedding to-do list, but insuring the ring is an important step many couples forget. Intimidated about where to begin? Don’t be! It’s not as complicated as it sounds—just follow our advice to find a policy that works for you.

every day, so you want to make sure you’re covered no matter what happens. Plus, no one wants to be stuck shelling out that kind of cash twice. The sentimental value alone is worth ensuring you can replace it with the exact style you love.

Before signing up for a policy, ask about these important factors:

how to get it The two most common ways to insure a ring are to either go through a specialized jewelry insurer like Jewelers Mutual, or to add a rider to a traditional homeowners or renters policy. There are many benefits that come with specialized insurance, especially one that’s focused exclusively on jewelry. Consider what level of coverage you need, and compare plans and deductibles to find the

That’s why it’s beneficial to choose a company that has specialized solely in jewelry insurance for over 100 years—Jewelers Mutual has the expertise you can trust. Plus, if you’re planning a destination wedding or far-flung honeymoon, you can rest assured you’re covered anywhere worldwide. And while other insurers might require you to work with a specific jeweler for a replacement, Jewelers Mutual encourages you to go to any one you choose to be sure you get

This practice started in ancient times. The Romans believed the vein in the fourth finger of the left hand ran directly to your heart and dubbed it the vena amoris (vein of love). BEAUTY GURU BRITTANY LO GIVES THE SCOOP ON FLAWLESS WEDDING HAIR AND MAKEUP.

What’s the biggest mistake brides make when choosing their hair and makeup? Some brides get so caught up in the idea that their wedding is an important day that they’ll ask for dramatic hair and makeup that doesn’t look like them—and they end up regretting it. Remember: You should still look and feel like yourself walking down the aisle. What’s your advice for brides who don’t usually wear makeup? Go to a department store and familiarize yourself with different products so you can communicate your likes and dislikes to your glam team. Keep in mind there’s a difference between your more natural, everyday look and makeup that photographs really well—so don’t freak out if you end up wearing more than you’re used to.

How important are viral trends like heavy contouring and “Instagram brows” where your wedding day look is concerned? In short: not important. It’s tempting to want to look like Kim Kardashian, but you have to consider how heavily edited photos on social media are. The goal of your hair and makeup trials should be a beautiful look that works for you, not what’s hot right now on Instagram.

What are your tips for working with hairstylists and makeup artists? When it comes to working with any wedding pro, the more communicative and appreciative you are, the harder they’ll work for you. Where’s the best place to find beauty inspo? Start with Pinterest and see what looks you’re gravitating toward—it’s okay if they’re all alike or they’re totally different. Then, go through recent photos of yourself at other weddings or events and figure out what hair and makeup looks good on you. That way, you can narrow down your options based on what you like plus what works for you.

For hands and nails that look healthier—and a wedding mani that lasts longer—prep is key. “Start by hydrating on the regular with a moisturizing hand cream and cuticle oil,” Inzerillo says. “If you’re on a budget, sub olive oil for a pricier cuticle treatment.” Guilty of biting your nails? Inzerillo suggests treating yourself to a biweekly soak in warm water and Epsom salts to relieve any pain and inflammation, then applying Neosporin to heal damaged areas. PRO TIP Shield hands from sun damage (like age spots and wrinkles) by using a hand cream with SPF.

FOR DEEP TONES Try a light pink with a white undertone. Gel polish in Muguet, $28, Dior.com

INK

There’s a match for every season of the year— consider your palette found.

Up the glamour with a few hits of this rich black shade. The best part? The unexpected hue works any time of year, for any style of party. Goodbye, wedding white!

WINTER Metallic gold creates a celebratory vibe.

SPRING Grassy green lends a touch of New England prep.

SUMMER Soft blush is a romantic and timeless addition.

OPT FOR MODERN DETAILS Ink pairs perfectly with super-streamlined accents. Use it in daring typography or sleek flatware.

BRING IT HOME You’re going to want to put these picks on your registry ASAP.

ROCK A STATEMENT BRIDAL LOOK Repping white isn’t the only way to turn heads on your wedding day. Mix up tradition by opting for a gutsy black dress—you’ll take the cake as the coolest bride out there. SEND A SOPHISTICATED SUITE Nothing’s more classic than invitations that put an emphasis on pretty script and refined details. Choose black envelopes for a luxe finishing touch.

PowerShot G7 x Mark II camera, $650, Canon, BestBuy.com

CARRY A BOLD BOUQUET Believe it or not, you can even work black into your blooms. Wrap your bouquet in a velvet ink ribbon, or go one step further and ask your florist to choose all the nearly black buds they can find. Dahlias, chocolate cosmos and scabiosa are great options to play up the color. ADD BLACK TO YOUR RING The onyx shade is making its way into jewelry too. For a twist on the traditional wedding ring, look for one featuring deep black diamonds.

HOW WE MET

Weston and I met though my twin sister, Megan, and her long-term boyfriend, Witt. Witt and Weston actually grew up together in Memphis, Tennessee, and always joked they were brothers. It all felt so right.

W E D D I N G M U S T - H AV E S

Bonfire on the beach, Southern comfort food and no first look. We wanted the moment we saw each other for the first time to be when I walked down the aisle.

THE PROPOSAL

Weston and I planned a trip to New York City in the summer, but booked it for December so we could see the holiday lights. The trip was my idea, so I wasn’t expecting a proposal. We had reservations on a snowy rooftop one day, and that’s where he asked. As I was sobbing my eyes out, the elevator doors opened revealing his whole family, my sister, her boyfriend and my mom. It was the most romantic moment of my life.

A week after we started dating, we went to his family’s beach house in Alabama. That house was so significant to our love story, and it holds so many memories, we decided it was the perfect, small, intimate place to say “I do.” It became the inspiration for our whole wedding. When we visit years from now, we can tell our kids here's where Mom and Dad fell in love and got married.

I used the CO2LIFT face mask (incredible) and I wore a long-lasting red lip (Fenty Beauty in Uncensored) on our wedding day. It made me feel so beautiful and confident.

We immediately fell in love with the Prospect House in Dripping Springs, Texas. It’s a modern space with the most dramatic altar and we knew it could be a canvas to paint all the colors (we took our engagement photos at a place called The Color Factory—we love color!). One of our favorite things to do is dance, and we wanted our reception to have a jubilant vibe. We booked a DJ who can deliver a high-energy playlist to get people out of their seats— that is, when they're not snacking on chicken-and-waffle skewers.

The newest twist on a destination affair? Renting out a whole property for you and your crew for the vacation meets wedding of a lifetime. Here’s how to make it your own.

166

DINE IN STYLE Really embrace an “I live here now” attitude by making 1your reception meal one big dinner party. Dining among the halls of a home will instantly have all your guests feeling welcome, while an on-site chef and concierge team will ensure everyone leaves full and happy.

STAY AND PLAY LOCAL To make the most of your visit, plan events unique to the area as entertainment. At Chateau de Courtomer in the Normandy region of France, guests can taste local cider, visit the market and cook with an in-house chef, watch a cheesemonger make fresh Camembert and even take a hot air balloon ride over the nearby farmland. Um yes, please!

WORK THE PROPERTY

One perk to renting an estate (trust us, it’s more affordable than you think) is having all your pre- and postwedding parties at different spots on the grounds. Throw a welcome dinner in the greenhouse, walk down a tree-lined “aisle” on the lawn and dance all night on the patio.

CEREMONY The couple made it official in a traditional Catholic mass at their church. ACCESSORIES Addie paired her soft blush gown with sparkling Jimmy Choo heels, while Richard sported a fun set of Star Wars–themed cuff links. ARRANGEMENTS Addie asked for “exotic flowers,” resulting in a grouping of larkspur, anemones, lisianthus, privet berries, genestra and bells of Ireland used at the ceremony and reception. FLOWER GIRLS Addie’s nieces wore dried flower crowns and carried baskets the bride made herself. SWEETHEART TABLE To make their seats even more personal, the couple set their table with china and drinkware from Anthropologie and engraved chopsticks purchased from a specialty shop in Japan.

A

ddie Ly (29 and a behavior analyst) and Richard Lee’s (34 and a physician) artsy affair unfolded at a contemporary Asian fusion bistro. “We wanted a venue that exuded a mysterious and intimate ambience,” Addie says. “AnQi was the first and only one that came to mind.” After strutting into the party on a glass catwalk to Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito,” the pair showed off a special handshake, and then took their seats beneath a garden of cherry blossoms. A six-course meal with surf and turf and Mongolian lamb lollipops followed. “Richard is Korean American, and I’m Vietnamese Chinese American,” Addie says. “We tried to bring a bit of our heritage into our partially Western-style wedding.” —Rachel Sylvester

TABLESCAPES Graphic ikebana arrangements and cherry blossom illustrations paired well with AnQi’s existing Asian-influenced décor. Green tea tiramisu, tofu cheesecake, salted caramel budino and more covered a 16-foot display in a designated “dessert room.” While snacking on treats, guests watched clips from Addie and Richard’s ceremony in Japan. LOCATION “We wanted to transport guests to a regal event in a downtown urban setting,” Erika says of why they chose District Winery. CAKES A black fondant-covered almond cake with blueberry jam and cream cheese frosting, plus two cement-gray cakes—red velvet with cream cheese frosting and coconut with passion curd filling—rounded out the last course. ATTIRE Marcus wore a dog pin and purple socks as a nod to his fraternity at Yale. ARRANGEMENTS Orchids were a sentimental addition to the groupings of hydrangeas, roses and coxcomb. “They were my mom’s favorite flower and filled the room with her presence,” Marcus says. STATIONERY A gold wax seal designed with the couple’s initials and black-on-black printing gave the suite an art deco flair.

arrying in Washington, DC, was a no-brainer for natives Erika Westry (36 and an attorney) and Marcus Davis (35 and a physician), who booked their bash at District Winery while it was still under construction. “The best part of picking our venue was watching it being built,” Erika says. Opulent accents like gilded chargers juxtaposed the site’s woodwork and wine barrels. “I wanted to create a luxurious, glam feeling to an otherwise minimalist space,” Erika says. Guests left with whitechocolate-covered Oreos shaped like gemstones—the ultimate finale for such a swanky soiree. After the celebration, the newlyweds hit up Shake Shack. “The perfect counterbalance to our day,” Erika says. —RS

RECEPTION An “organic waterfall” of smilax hung above the reflective dance floor. CEREMONY BACKDROP Leon dreamed of marrying under a lemon tree rather than a chuppah, so they crafted their own. Roses, lemon leaves and ivy surrounded the base, and lemons filled the canopy. Birch, weeping willow, twisted wisteria and ivy made up the trunk. ESCORT CARDS “We designed the place cards in a unique shape to look like wood, to embody the art and architecture that make the museum so magnificent,” Gil says. RITUALS “Our program described the proceedings because it was our guests’ first Orthodox Jewish gay ceremony,” Gil says. They broke glass and partook in the seven blessings. HORS D’OEUVRES Guests sampled salmon with mango-chipotle glaze, three types of carpaccio and more.

G

il Treger (below left, 26 and works in real estate management) and Leon Treger (27 and an operations manager at Lyft) envisioned throwing their wedding somewhere totally unexpected—and their search took them to The Hamptons. “The Parrish Art Museum’s open walls gave guests the opportunity to feel the nature outside, while the roof enclosure made the space more intimate,” Gil says. “We wanted the wedding to mimic a romantic forest— one where two men could magically fall in love.” Though tradition took center stage, unconventional details also shined. Take the set list: Israeli-Jewish music transitioned to Latin and Middle Eastern hits, then hip-hop turned up the after-party. —RS

RING BEARERS The couple’s four nephews walked down the aisle in suspenders along with the flower girl, Jenna’s niece. STATIONERY Minimal, flat-printed invites in coral and black coordinated with the geometric menu cards styled with a pop of pink. BOUQUET Jenna carried areca palm, philodendron, phalaenopsis orchids and caladium tied off with raw-edge black silk ribbon. CEREMONY The pair made it official under a neon sign of their newly shared last name, with areca palm, bird of paradise and elephant ear on display in brass planters. Les’s uncle officiated. FASHION Jenna finalized her gown just one week ahead of the wedding and paired it with her mom’s veil, modern white mules and a custom gold necklace.

hen the groom plays in a band, killer music is a must. Case in point: Jenna Lee (30) and Les Priest (33 and a member of LANY) mixed a one-of-a-kind ceremony soundtrack. Jenna walked down the aisle to “Plainsong” by The Cure, then the couple recessed to Lana Del Rey’s “National Anthem.” The pair prioritized being true to their personalities. “We wanted the wedding to be a mirror of our everyday lives and to feel relaxed, classic and cool,” Jenna says. That intention translated to edgy details like structured arrangements, a black-and-white palette and a clean atmosphere. “I wanted the design to be the opposite of everything I’d ever seen at other weddings,” Jenna says. —Becky Murray

LOUNGE SEATING Marble-patterned furniture made an appearance at the ceremony as extra seating and at cocktail hour alongside acrylic coffee tables. TABLE SETTINGS Jet-black accents, including taper candles, chairs, plates and vases, plus gold flatware and white linens, set a contemporary scene. TRANSPORTATION Les picked up Jenna for their first date—mini golf and dinner—in his Volkswagen Beetle, making it the obvious choice for their exit ride. COCKTAILS The bar served up a signature drink made with blackberrysage lemonade and champagne. FOOD Nashville-style hot chicken bites and grilled polenta with feta, sun-dried tomato pesto and basil kicked off the party. The night ended with the newlyweds’ favorite local treat: strawberry doughnuts from Proper Bagel.

CEREMONY The couple’s “arch,” covered in astrantia and roses, was built to resemble a camp tent. Stefano printed an excerpt from Patrick Rothfuss’s fantasy novel The Name of the Wind on parchment and stuck it to the willow tree with a handmade arrow for an even more personal touch. RITUALS After exchanging rings, the couple performed a handfasting ceremony and covered Stefano in Elisa’s veil. These Celtic traditions represented the bride’s love for Ireland. WEDDING PARTY The bridesmaids wore individualized burgundy gowns, while the guys donned “hand of the king” pins, a Game of Thrones reference. PROPS The garland-wrapped vintage peacock chair made for a chic photo booth.

E

lisa Mocci (30 and a destination wedding designer) and Stefano Marras (30 and a lawyer and fantasy writer) met as Scouts when they were 14 years old. After years of dating, they parted ways to pursue their careers. “We didn’t see each other for 12 years, then suddenly ran into each other in the street and fell in love again immediately,” Elisa says. Fitting for their out-of-this-world story line, the pair filled their celebration with fantastical details inspired by nature and Game of Thrones. Elisa even walked down the aisle to the show’s theme song. “As a planner, I work for the happiness of others,” Elisa says. “Once I understood that my wedding could be as weird as I wanted, planning became fun and simple.” —BM

Wedding Gowns 101 We know your first priority—finding the (other) one: your dress.

GOWN SILHOUETTE STYLES

trumpet gown

mermaid gown

The skirt in this gown style extends from the bustline. It’s a great choice for pear-shaped brides because it disguises the hips.

The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.

This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.

a-line gown

ball gown

sheath

This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.

The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.

This slim, formfitting silhouette hugs the body from head to toe. It’s the perfect look for casual, intimate weddings.

Wedding Party 101 All you need to know to coordinate your wedding party’s look.

BRIDESMAIDS • For a modern, but still put-together look—pick the color and fabric, but consider letting your bridesmaids choose the neckline and silhouette. • When shopping, bring one or two bridesmaids—maybe the bridesmaid who has the body or coloring that’s most similar to the rest of the bridal party, or the bridesmaid who is the most difficult to fit. • Ask for your bridesmaids’ advice, but make the final decision yourself. You’re the one who knows the big picture—overall look, formality and people’s budgets—best. • The bridesmaids should try to place their orders at the same time to ensure that the dresses will be made from the same dye lot. • Allow three months’ delivery and alteration time for the dresses. • Don’t forget the extras. Should the bridesmaids all have the same shoes, jewelry, hairstyles, handbags or wraps? Communicate your desires clearly to your girls. Email works great for this.

GROOM & GROOMSMEN

262

• Brush up on your tuxedo terms and take a peek in your own closet before you begin suit shopping. This will give you an idea of what style you like best—notched or shawl lapel, standard or spread collar. • The groomsmen should dress around the groom. A consistent look is great, but the groom should sport some detail (a boutonniere, tie or pocket square) that differentiates him from the pack. shawl lapel

notched lapel

peaked lapel

• The tuxedo is classic, but consider all your options. Marrying by the beach? Try a more casual jacket and trousers. Having an ultra-formal wedding? Pick a cutaway coat, gray-striped trousers, gray vest and ascot. • Should you rent or buy? If you don’t attend many formal events or if your weight is frequently in flux, renting may be the way to go. If you’ll have three or four more good uses for a tux, it will pay for itself.

FLOWER GIRLS & RING BEARERS • Flower girls and ring bearers don’t have to match the adults perfectly, but they should certainly fit in with the formality of the event. The only exception: Tuxedos aren’t necessary (and may not be available) for tykes under six. Our trick—substitute a black suit and a bow tie. • Be sure to dress your flower girl or ring bearer appropriately for their age. Strapless or halter dresses may be too sophisticated for the little ones (even with a cardigan), while overly froufrou tulle dresses might not look right on, say, a 10-year-old.

4 Nassau, the capital city, is extra-crowded during March and April, when spring-breakers invade. It is also one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. 5 Grand Bahama Island, the fourth-largest island in the chain, is only a 50-minute flight from Miami and exudes an airy, spread-out feel compared to busy Nassau. Take diving lessons or browse dutyfree bounty at the International Bazaar or the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport.

Looking for excitement? Don’t miss Junkanoo, a Bahamian costume parade in which people dance to copper cowbells, goombay drums and whistles. The parade goes from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. (yeah, you read that right) on December 26 and January 1. 7 The Abaco islands are famous for sailing and bird-watching, while the Exumas and Pelican Cays feature incredible land and sea parks. 8 Popular cuisine includes locally grown guava, mangoes, papaya and plantains with conch, kingfish, wahoo and grouper—all washed down with pineapple wine from Eleuthera. 9 Boats are available for chartering or group tours, including Sail Nassau’s two multimillion-dollar Racers, where you can take the helm or just sit back and feel the wind in your hair. 10 The Bahamas are just a 75-minute plane trip from Florida, making them a quick trip for destination weddings and honeymoons alike. With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, the weather is almost always sunny and warm, cooled by the constant northeast trade winds. The average daytime temperature is balmy, ranging between 84-88 degrees.

The rocky, wind-whipped Atlantic coast is one of the world’s best windsurfing spots, while the tranquil west coast that faces the Caribbean Sea, called the Platinum Coast, is lined with posh resorts.

2 Shorts, t-shirts, wraps and sundresses are your best bet for daytime wear and elegantly casual wear for evenings. Swimwear should be kept for the beach and suitable attire should be worn when shopping or dining out.

7 Indulge your taste buds with spicy FrenchCaribbean cuisine at the patios of Brown Sugar, or grab a seat on the intimate, torch-lit terrace overlooking the Caribbean at The Cliff.

3

The Barbadian capital city of Bridgetown was originally named “Indian Bridge” for the crude bridge that was constructed over the river by early Indian settlers.

8 Hike along an inland trail or down a coastal pathway, laugh at a mischievous green monkey in the wildlife preserve or unwind in one of the numerous parks.

9 If you want to take to the water, board a catamaran in Bridgetown for lunchtime snorkeling, or set sail for a sunset dinner cruise

10 Dance the night away in “irie” oblivion to live soca, reggae or calypso at Harbour Lights or hot spot Sugar Ultra Lounge.

First made 370 years ago from the sugar cane that populated the island, Barbados rum soon found the favor of many English sailors.

If you’re lucky, you may see the rare St. Lucian parrot.

6 The best place to start a scuba dive along the coral walls is the beach at Anse Chastanet, a hotel on the southwest coast. 7 Some of the coral walls plunge 200 feet deep! Keep your eyes peeled for barrel sponges, angel fish, sea horses, spotted eels, stingrays, nurse sharks and sea turtles. 8 Try local favorites like saltfish and green fig and Creole barbecue. While you’re in Castries, try Pink Plantation House, a can’t-miss Creole restaurant.

If you rent a car, make sure you keep to the left side of the road (like you would in the UK). You can also make your way around via ferry, bus or cab.

9 Gros Islet, a small island on the northwest shore of St. Lucia, is known throughout the Caribbean for its Friday night jump-up. Street-side music blares as locals jam to the sounds of reggae, soca and calypso.

5 Visit the hopping Saturday market in Castries, the island’s capital. The vendors sell everything from fruits and local spices to crafts.
