ÕENDUSÜLIÕPILASTE JA ÕDEDE KUTSEALASED VÄÄRTUSED JA HOIAKUD NING NEID MÕJUTAVAD TEGURID Nursing students and nurses professional values and attitudes and factors that are affecting them Reet Urban, Katrin Parv Tartu Tervishoiu Kõrgkool Abstract The aim of the present study was to describe nursing students’ and nurses’ professional values and attitudes and factors affecting these. Using a descriptive review of professional literature, 32 evidence-based literature sources were chosen, of which 22 are research articles. Also books, the code of ethics, one website and one article from Eesti Õde have been used. Working in hospital and having clinical practice during studies has shown that not all the nurses working adhere to common professional values and nurses have different attitudes towards patients. It has also been noticed that the values and attitudes of nursing students are changing during their education. According to the study, professional nursing core values are caring, human dignity, autonomy, justice, altruism, holism, equivalence. Nurse-students emphasised more than nurses altruism, confidentiality and the development of nursing professioon. Nursing students’ professional values and attitudes change during education, especially during clinical practice where they perceive the role of a nurse. General changes of attitudes in the society influence the changes of professional values also, like altruism and compassion as the emphasis in the society has moved towards individualism and narcissism. Consistent self-reflection and selfassessment are the most efficient methods for maintaining and developing professional values for both the nurse-students and the nurses.
