F rom a double to a triple peripheral: Carl F. Bucherer’s leitmotif is an unending quest for excellence by the company’s master watchmakers who, in 2021, succeeded in add ing to this spectacular assembly the most com plex complication – a minute repeater designed to strike the hour, quarter-hour and minute – and in mounting peripherally the repeater regulator on three invisible ceramic ball bearings with a low friction coefficient. The CFB MR3000 caliber is the crowning glory of the magnificent oeuvre that Carl F. Bucherer has been composing for more than a century. There has never been any thing like the harmony with which these three innovations successfully interpret the score presented by the Manero. The same harmony of aesthetics is reflected in this timepiece’s sophisticated finish: the highly polished diamond-beveled chamfers, sand blasted crown, hand-angled dial edges and win dows, and not forgetting the Côtes de Genève–striped, angled, and diamond-beveled bridges.

T his wristwatch with a striking mechanism, COSC-certified chronometer and power reserve of 65 hours represents the ulti mate synchronization between the parts of a timepiece, the precise expression of the way they interact, and the subtle balance between the functions, volumes, and weights that have their place inside the case and play a perfectly harmonized concerto that marries functionality, beauty, and security. The mechanism produces two different notes on two gongs that can be observed through an opening around the edge of the dial. At the same time, the sculpted striking hammers are visible through little open ings. The floating tourbillon can be stopped on command to set the hour to the second using the stop-seconds function. A visual and audible indicator signals that the minute repeater is activated, and the crown locks whenever this is the case.

THE FESTIVALLUCERNEORCHESTRA

T o accompany the Lucerne Festival, one of the biggest classical music festivals in the world, established in 1938, artistic and executive director Michael Haefliger, along with Claudio Abbado, founded the festival’s very own symphony orchestra in 2003: the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. For two weeks every summer, this orchestra brings together in Lucerne a host of internationally renowned orchestral musicians, led since 2016 by the Italian conductor Riccardo Chailly. Spreading the name of Lucerne all over the world as well as bringing the world to Lucerne, are ambitions shared by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Carl F. Bucherer alike, whose precious traditions – musical in one case, and horological in the other – have forged their worldwide reputations. These two institutions are passionate about forming open, creative links with their admir ers both beyond Switzerland’s borders and at home, in the town of Lucerne which is dear to their hearts and whose values they are proud to champion. Their curiosity of spirit prompts them to explore, setting themselves challenges to push themselves ever onwards. This quest for innovation is all the more meaningful in that it stems from the similar history and heritage.

T his open-minded, creative approach has led Carl F. Bucherer and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra to join forces to embrace two exceptional creations: the Manero Minute Repeater Symphony wristwatch and the musical work Periphery, which the world-famous Swedish composer Lisa Streich has written especially for this timepiece in a special com mission for the festival.

There is a very subtle distinction between the symphony of a watch and a musical sym phony. Sascha Moeri, CEO of Carl F. Bucherer, is delighted by the partnership that his brand has formed with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra: “The word ‘Symphony’ in the name of our wrist watch is an expression of the complex harmony and delicate interaction between the different components it contains – qualities that this watch shares with the Orchestra. Our watch and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra’s musical work, both new and dazzling, are in perfect harmony. They share a commitment to artistic perfection and a devotion to craftsmanship.”

Periphery is an homage to the quintes sence of the art of Swiss watchmaking in all its complexity, embodied by Carl F. Bucherer in this unique watch. In a piece that lasts for two minutes and 30 seconds, Lisa Streich uses sound to evoke the striking mechanism of the watch’s minute repeater and the components that make up the peripheral rotor and tourbillon. The minute repeater regulator is reproduced by a succession of strikes and strokes of a triangle positioned vertically on a timpani. The peripheral rotor is given voice by the hairs of violin bows as they play the strings beneath, the breathing sounds from the wind instruments, and the drone produced by an unusual instrument: a buzzing bow, made of wood and elastic strings that produce a pleasant buzzing sound when they vibrate. The tourbillon and its suspended cage are brought alive by the brass section, the instrumentalists tapping the bells of their instruments with a pencil to trigger the revolving movement created by the strings. A resonance interweaves between the trumpet and the higher strings, and another wanders between the trombone and the lower strings. An audible tick-tock reproduces the delicate choreography of the watch hands.

Here, watch components and orchestral musicians take their seats, preparing to fasci nate their audience. These two masterpieces, the Manero Minute Repeater Symphony and Periphery, they are perfectly in tune with one another.

With this collaboration, Carl F. Bucherer and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra are certainly reading from the same printed music. Their part nership cements not only their shared Lucerne roots but also the same exacting technical and creative imperatives the two have adopted, one in watchmaking, the other in music. The talented Swedish composer Lisa Streich shares their passion and quest in continually striving for per fection. Continuing her collaboration with the orchestra – with which she has been working for over two years – she wrote Periphery, a musical work dedicated to the Manero Minute Repeater Symphony. The result is an incredible artwork which pays tribute to the precise harmony with which the components of a watch and the instruments of the musicians in an orchestra all work together in perfect synchronization. W e spoke with the talented Swedish composer Lisa Streich, who told us all about her work with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and her collaboration with Carl F. Bucherer, for which she has written a musical work dedicated to the Manero Minute Repeater Symphony.

WATCHMAKING AND MUSIC

I always keep in mind how the instruments fit together spatially and where the sound comes from. The recording recreates what is going on in each part of the orchestra. It’s very interesting, because time was never so present as when I was composing the piece for this watch. Periphery had to last for two minutes and 30 seconds, whereas it’s usually up to me how long my compositions last.

LISA STREICH, CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU CAME TO WORK WITH THE LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA AND WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS ORCHESTRA?

As long as I live, I’ll be grateful to have had this incredible experience of working with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra! In 2015, as part of the festival, I was commissioned to write a piece by the Roche Young Commission of the Swiss pharmaceuticals company Roche, which, every two years, commissions a young composer and an experienced composer to write a new composition. I worked with the orchestra and the young composer Gregor Mayrhofer. It was fantastic! We experimented with different ideas for two years. Orchestras very rarely get to do that. Usually, when you write a piece, there’s not enough time to get off the beaten track and be as adventurous as that. But the point of creating a morceau is being able to explore something you’re unfamiliar with. That was how I wrote my piece of music, and I learned so much! Today, I’m using everything I learned then in my new compositions.

FOR PERIPHERY, HOW DID YOU WORK WITH THE LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA AND CARL F. BUCHERER?

MASTERING EXCELLENCE

What makes this festival special is that the musicians only play together during the summer. They are really good musicians, more used to playing chamber music, so you can ask a lot more of them than you would of the musicians in a regular orchestra. If you put a score in front of them, they will play it perfectly synchronized straight off. All the composer and conductor have to do is bring them together, and the sound they make is incredible.

Mark Sattler (the festival’s head of contem porary music) asked me to compose a piece for a watch because he knew I was fascinated by mechanical objects. And by the connection between machines and humans. I felt incred ibly honored to be working with this fabulous orchestra and such a prestigious watchmaker. It’s fantastic to work with people who are not musicians but who have the same ideas and dreams which you have. We’re like scientists: We experiment and take risks. Sometimes we fail and sometimes we succeed. We have a lot in common. HOW DO YOU WRITE A PIECE OF MUSIC FOR A WATCH?

I wanted to reproduce the actual sounds the watch makes. I was able to take the differ ent components of the watch and bring them together musically in different ways. It was both a simple and a sophisticated process. In the piece, you can hear each component individually and then all together. They talk to each other. No part can work without the others. It’s like the human body – it needs all its organs to be able to function. It’s amazing to see so many different components all working together! I take the audience into the interior of the watch so that they can take in what is happening, I leave them there, and then I bring them back out again.

HOW DOES THIS SYNCHRONIZATION COME ABOUT WITHIN THE LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, WHICH IS A SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA?

WATCHMAKING AND MUSIC HAVE A LOT IN COMMON: THEY ARE GOVERNED BY TIME AND THERE IS THE SAME SYN CHRONIZATION BETWEEN THE PARTS OF A WATCH AND THE MUSICIANS IN AN ORCHESTRA. WHEN YOU COMPOSE, HOW DO YOU BRING ALL THE DIFFERENT INSTRUMENTS TOGETHER TO CREATE THE PIECE?

PERIPHERAL TECHNOLOGY

One glance at the arrangement of the dis plays tells you that you are looking at a Carl F. Bucherer watch. And indeed, we are the only watchmaker to use this dial typology. The movement is also fitted with a stop-sec onds mechanism, which is a particular favorite of mine. When you are setting the time, it ena bles you to stop the second hand via the crown.

SAMIR, CAN YOU EXPLAIN PERIPHERAL TECHNOLOGY TO US AS WELL AS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOUBLE AND TRIPLE PERIPHERAL? In our automatic watches, peripheral technology is a system designed to guide the rotor toward the periphery of the movement via three ball bearings, instead of at its center as is the case for conventional automatic watches. The advantage is a flattening of the movement and an unobstructed view of the latter. In fact, the rotor never obscures any part of the move ment regardless of the latter’s position. The precursor of this concept is our CFB A1000 caliber, launched in 2008. This inspired us in 2016 to develop the CFB A2000 caliber, followed by the CFB T3000 caliber. Our CFB T3000 caliber is a self-winding tourbillon movement. This movement is called the double peripheral because besides the rotor, the tourbillon cage is also peripherally mounted. Looking at the tourbillon, it seems to have a “floating” cage, apparently suspended in space and not held by any other movement components. None of the cage components are therefore concealed by a bridge or any other mounting system. In the case of the CFB MR3000 movement with its triple peripheral technology, we used the two peripheral principles of our tourbillon move ment and added a further complication, a minute repeater, which is no small feat. The challenge consisted of integrating the peripheral system into the regulator of a striking watch. The regulator controls the speed at which the hammers strike the gongs so that the hours, quarter hours, and minutes chime in horological harmony. In a traditional regulator system, the mechanism is mounted on a central axis with two ruby bearings. The drawback of this conventional arrangement is its thickness. By mounting the regulator peripherally, we suc ceeded in eliminating its pivoting movement and thus reduced its thickness by 30% to 40%.

I n 2008, Carl F. Bucherer became the first watchmaker to develop and launch peripheral technology in series production. Back then, the company rose to the unprec edented challenge of positioning the rotor of an automatic caliber on the periphery of the movement, refining its thickness and revealing the beauty of the mechanism. Aspiring to new heights, in 2018 the watchmaker mounted a tourbillon on the periphery alongside the rotor, and in 2021 added the minute repeater regu lator. This revolutionary technical innovation is now enhanced by a new complication, the big date window. Samir Merdanovic presents the Manero Peripheral BigDate to us and traces the thrilling epic tale of peripheral technology, revealing the consummate art of assembling the components and complications to create a timepiece of signature perfection and harmony.

HOW DO YOU POSITION THE COMPO NENTS OF A WATCH TO ENSURE PRECI SION WORKING AND HOW DO YOU STRIKE A BALANCE WHEN ADDING COMPLICA TIONS? WHERE DO YOU BEGIN AND WHAT CHALLENGE DOES THIS POSE? Well, the challenge is part of the job. When you have a movement with more than 600 components, you leave nothing to chance. From the outset of a project, we have to be clear about what we want to display and hear, the composition and arrangement of the move ment, and any constraints to be considered.

No, there are no limits really. However, if there is no technical or aesthetic benefit for the movement, we do not apply the principle just for the sake of it. Its use must be justified; there must be a rhyme to the reason.

The displays are positioned at 10 o’clock for the big date, at 9 o’clock for the day of the week, and at 3 o’clock for the power reserve.

WHY DID CARL F. BUCHERER OPT TO EXPLORE PERIPHERAL TECHNOLOGY; WHY THIS PARTICULAR ASPECT OF WATCHMAKING? We have never spared ourselves any effort, and have always invested a lot of time and money in seeking technical solutions to create our own DNA. We neither aim to imitate, nor seek inspiration from other calibers, but to innovate with respect for the tradition of fine watchmaking. Today, we are a high-end manu facturer of cutting-edge technology focusing on niche products. We do not produce millions of movements every year, nor do we wish to do so. Instead, we aspire to satisfy the expectations of collectors who appreciate unique, outstanding timepieces. We were the first watchmaker to develop and launch series production of periph eral technology. It is COSC-certified and of course features our automatic peripheral system and the highly practical big date and day of week displays.

For instance, we might have technical con straints of a dimensional nature – the movement might have to have a maximum diameter and a desired height – or aesthetic dictates such as the position of the tourbillon at 12 o’clock, or hammers visible from the dial side. We have to begin by visualizing our goal, then we think about ways of approaching it; we explore vari ous paths in order to achieve what we set out to do without making any compromises in terms of the quality and precision of the movement.

You can therefore set the time to the second. The movement is beautifully finished in the tra ditional manner, beloved of our brand: Côtes de Genève–striped, angled, and diamond-beveled bridges, polished screwheads, circular-grained gear wheels, and sunburst rachet.

he Manero Peripheral BigDate is pow ered by the CFB A2011 caliber, a COSCcertified mechanical manufacture move ment with a peripheral rotor. The watch indicates a big date in a splendid window at 10 o’clock, the days of the week in a window positioned at 9 o’clock, the hours, the minutes, a small-sec onds subdial discreetly highlighted by a contrast of colors and positioned at 6 o’clock, and a power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock. Its stain less steel case has a diameter of 41.6 mm and a height of 12.21 mm. The anti-reflective coating on both sides of its sapphire crystal enhances leg ibility. The movement can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back. The watch is water-resistant to 30 m (3 bar).

The Manero Peripheral BigDate is inspired by another of the brand’s models: the Manero PowerReserve Mr Green and Mr Blue. The time piece is available in two versions. One features a light blue dial with a small-seconds subdial in beige and is available on a beige textile strap with a stainless steel pin lock folding clasp or on a stainless steel bracelet with a stainless steel folding clasp. he story that connects the Bucherer family with the destiny of a vintage automobile is one of passion passed down through the generations. In 1949, Jörg G. Bucherer, the current President of Carl F. Bucherer, was 13 years old when his father, Carl Eduard Bucherer, the son of company founder Carl Friedrich Bucherer, entered his automobile – a Lincoln Cosmopolitan Town Sedan – in the Concours d’Excellence International in Lucerne. The teen ager was fascinated by the appeal of this beau tifully stylish blue American automobile, a model that had been launched by the American Ford Motor Company that same year. Carl Eduard’s joy was complete when it was declared the winner of its category. The Lincoln was how ever sold in 1952 and changed hands several times thereafter, until Jörg G. Bucherer bought it back in 2013, realizing the dream of owning the family automobile that he had cherished as a youngster.

This model features a tachymeter scale, which measures the speed at which a person or object is moving. It is water-re sistant to 30 m (3 bar) and has a power reserve of 42 hours.

Since the beginning, we have created design-led furniture. Pieces that are modern, of course, but first and foremost classic. The phi losophy behind our creations is that every single piece is designed to last. The idea is that our customers will still have them in their homes in 20 or 30 years’ time, or even longer. To achieve that, we favor a design that is both neutral and contemporary.

WHICH IS YOUR MOST ICONIC MODEL? I’d say there are two: our DS-600 and DS-1025 modular sofas. We call them our “Snake” and “Terrazza” sofas. The DS-600 can be curved into all sorts of elegant snakelike S shapes, and the ingenious design of the DS-1025, consisting of two elements, is inspired by a cascading staircase. To date, these are the brand’s biggest sellers. They’re particularly in demand from Hollywood stars.

WHAT MAKES YOUR LEATHERS SO UNIQUE? Our leathers breathe! At de Sede, we have a passion for this unique material, with its pat tern of pores, its grain, its surface structure, and its folds. We are always on the lookout for new treatment processes and new qualities of leather. For our furniture, we use only the very finest hides. Our delicate tanning process results in a particularly soft, supple and dura ble leather – also known as aniline or Nappa leather. We keep processing to a minimum, for a superior-quality leather that allows the hide to breathe. Look at it with a magnifying glass and you’ll see the hair pores are still open. As a result, the leather is neither cold nor hot to the touch. It matches the skin temperature of who ever is sitting on it.

The water for our Säntis Malt flows gently from the rocks at the foot of the Alpstein moun tains, providing us with our very own private water source. In terms of mineral content, the water is soft and pure, meaning that it needs no harsh chemical treatment before we use it. This purity has a decisive influence on the taste of our whisky.

Another important ingredient for our Säntis Malt is the malted barley that is grown for us by 35 Swiss farmers in the highest regions of Switzerland. This variety of barley is character ised by its strength and vitality, which it gains from its late ripening and the extreme weather conditions in the mountains.But it doesn't stop there because the barley is double-barrelled: Aside from being perfect for our whisky, growing the crop helps the Swiss mountain farmers to maintain their livelihoods – a crop that’s defi nitely worth its weight in gold!

It takes real skill. During distillation, the still man waits patiently for the ex- act moment that he can separate the heart of the run from the rest of the distillate. His knowledge and experience are not only needed during distillation, but also during maturation. He will use his expertise to carefully select the correct barrel, decide on the period of maturation and judge the influences which air pressure and climate will have on the whisky. Last, but most certainly not least, he will use his pronounced sense of smell and taste to decide when the whisky is ready to be bottled.

Peat from the Appenzell moor gives our Säntis Malt «Edition Dreifaltigkeit» (Trinity) its typi cal smoky character during malting of the barley over the fire. This whisky was chosen by Jim Murray as the «Euro- pean Whisky of the Year 2010» with the following words: «What we have here is of such a controlled immense extent and quality classification that one must enjoy this whisky.» Hard to take – Easy to remember

Like all our whiskies, the spring water for our Säntis Malt «Himmelberg Edition» originates from the Alpstein. The secret to this whisky lies in transferring it from a beer barrel into various wine casks during maturation. Independent whisky consultant Julia Nourney describes it as a «light and fruity whisky, with spicy and woody aromas whose true character is best tasted on the roof of the mouth.»

The oak barrels in the warehouse at Brauerei Locher protect the heart of our Säntis Malt. The barrels started their journey 60 to 130 years ago and have absorbed decades worth of beer aromas. They now give our whisky its extraordinary character. Finishing the whisky is done in wooden casks from all over the world, for example casks previously used for port, sherry, bourbon, sweet wines, Pinot Noir and numerous other specialities. They are responsible for the final character of each Säntis Malt Edition and give each one a unique finishing touch.

Combining tradition with innovation is one of our favorite challenges! We often come up with new interpretations of our iconic collections such as our 849 pens, decorating them with new and original designs, or our Varius writing instruments, which lend themselves very well to the use of bold and adventurous combinations of materials. We sometimes work with artists and designers who have a close relationship with our company. They help us see an instrument we’ve been making for 100 years in a com pletely fresh light! But the real challenge is to successfully reinvent ourselves while remaining true to our DNA. We also have to innovate if we are to meet the needs of today’s consumers. We recently launched an online customization configurator that anyone can use to create their own pen engraved with their initials!

Above all, I have inherited my family’s pas sion. The same passion that drove my father and his father before him, and which is shared by every single one of our artisans and employees. But I am also proud of the strong values – inno vation, a quest for excellence, and corporate responsibility – that have forged Caran d’Ache’s international reputation and of which I am today the guarantor. We must also ensure we continue to adapt, just as we have done continually over the last 100 years, to accommodate new distri bution channels, digitalization, and new trends in marketing and communication. That’s why we launched our online shop in 2013, and why we have stepped up our social media presence and continued to innovate through meaningful collaborations with famous names such as Paul Smith, Vitra, Nespresso, the Yves Klein Archives, and Kengo Kuma, to name but a few.

CARAN D’ACHE IN A WATCH: HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL? The luxury watchmaking industry and its iconography have always been a tremendous inspiration for us, and we love paying tribute to it by reinterpreting its codes. We have done something similar before, in our limited-edition 1010 Timekeeper, 1010 Chrono, and Timegraph pens. It’s an industry that we have much in com mon with, because like the world of superior writing instruments, luxury watchmaking is a clever combination of ingenuity, tradition, and expertise.

WHAT DIFFERENT SKILLS AND TRADES DO YOU DRAW ON IN YOUR GENEVA WORKSHOPS? AND HOW DO YOU ENSURE THESE ARE PASSED ON? At Caran d’Ache, we are fortunate to have more than 90 trades under the same roof, representing expertise in a vast array of fields and working hand in hand to produce the full extent of our fine arts, writing, and luxury writing products. We work with pencil lead extruders, artisans responsible for developing new colors and weighing pigments, and also master pol ishers, master lacquerers, and master guilloche engravers. Some of these professions exist in fine watchmaking too, but others are specific to our industry and very rare. To ensure these skills and specialized trades are handed down and preserved for the future, every year we take on a number of apprentices.

YOUR TWO MAISONS HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER BY REPUTATION FOR OVER A CENTURY. WHAT TRIGGERED YOUR PARTNERSHIP? The legacy was a trigger. As mentioned, they have a long, incredible, interesting his tory based on the same values as ours. Caran d’Ache and Carl F. Bucherer are very innovative companies. And we have to be innovative if we want to constantly develop further this a com petitive environment. We’ve always been true to our basic values, something that is greatly influ enced by our being led by the founding family. Also, we both have a long tradition and a legacy that also defines our future. HOW DID YOUR TWO MAISONS EXPRESS THOSE SHARED BRAND VALUES IN THE MANERO FLYBACK SIGNATURE WATCH? AND HOW DID THEY INSPIRE EACH OTHER?

We were founded in 1888, more than 130 years ago, but you could say that the brand as you know it today is much younger. A part of the identity changed twenty years ago, when Mr. Jörg G. Bucherer – who represents the third consecutive generation of founding fam ily to run this company – decided to place his grandfather’s name (Carl Friedrich Bucherer) on every dial. Since then, the name ‘Carl F. Bucherer’ has appeared on every single time piece. Today, we have five different collections. Each collection has its own design language, design colors, and design DNA. Whenever we design a timepiece, it always respects our heritage and this specific DNA but we are flexible in interpreting it. Within the five collec tions, we naturally allocate the collection and timepieces to one of our four brand worlds: Mastering Excellence, Cosmopolitan since 1888,

During the pandemic, we took the time to really reflect on our brand, our values and our next steps. Our heritage of more than 134 years is so well founded that it will always remain a USP of the brand, and our values of innova tion, excellence, tradition and sustainability will certainly not change, as they are timeless. For our next steps, we decided to partner with local yet global brands who have the same val ues as we do. This led to our partnership with Caran d’Ache, as together we aim to engage with our local community and with our local cus tomers in a more engaging and sustainable way.

In every signature moment of your life - the birth of a child, taking on a new job, buying an apartment, getting married, or whatever your own signature moments might be - you always note the time and the date with your timepiece, but in most cases, you will also sign a docu ment of some sort. Therefore, we wanted to collaborate with something that reflects those signature moments in the lives of our custom ers. We produced a high-end writing instrument and a beautiful timepiece, the Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback Signature watch and the Caran D’Ache Signature rollerball pen. But that wasn’t enough for us. We wanted something cool and unexpected because people want to have something rather disruptive on their wrists. We brought colors and sustainability to the wrist: the NATO textile strap is available in different colors and is made of 100% sustaina ble materials. There are two straps: one comes together with the watch and the other, in another color, is a complimentary gift to the customer. We also have very special packaging: the pen and the timepiece are presented together in a travel pouch made of eco-friendly materials, and delivered in a beautiful handcrafted wooden box that customers can use again. It’s a jewel within a jewel. It’s an iconic combination of what the brand reflects in its DNA, an ambassador of signature moments in the lives of our customers.

In our discussions with Caran d’Ache, we realized that this was a perfect match because, like us, they are based in Switzerland and built on the values of family business; they are a Manufacture with a long-standing history, and Caran d’Ache and Carl F. Bucherer both produce mechanical or analog instruments in a world which is almost entirely digital. So, this was a perfect basis for the start of something special from two iconic Swiss brands.

Designed to explore new horizons and opportunities, the Manero Flyback is an auto matic chronograph powered by the CFB 1970 caliber, with a diameter of 30.4 mm and a height of 7.9 mm. It features two chronograph counters, the date, hours, minutes, a small second, and the flyback function. This one allows to set a new stopwatch when the chronograph is already running. True to the vintage aesthetic and sportchic style of the collection, its design has been reworked. The dial is available in bright blue, silver, black, or blue gray. The hours and min utes are indicated by perforated lancet-shaped hands. The steel case, 43 mm in diameter and 14.45 mm high, has retro pushbuttons in the form of a brass fastener, and a tachymeter. Its sapphire crystal is considerably curved with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. The case back reveals the movement through a sap phire crystal. This beautiful, high-performance timepiece has a 42-hour power reserve and is water-resistant to 30 meters (3 bars).

Nico Hischier shares Carl F. Bucherer’s pas sion for challenges and achievements, which requires concentration, effort, self-improvement, humility, and the ability to question oneself. At just 23 years of age, the ice hockey player has already demonstrated his commitment to the game, his leadership personality, his team spirit, and the brilliance of his game. He has been pas sionate about hockey ever since he was a child. In 2015, he became the second youngest goal scorer in the Swiss league, before becoming the first Swiss-born player selected in the first round of the National Hockey League’s overall draft in 2017. He then helped the New Jersey Devils return to the playoffs for the first time in six years. He has been the captain of the US team since 2021, making him the youngest active captain in the league. Nico also distinguished himself with the Swiss national team at the last two International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships after scoring three successive goals in spectacular fashion in April 2019. A vic tory repeated at the World Championship in Slovakia, during which he led his countrymen and qualified them for the quarterfinals by scor ing nine points in eight games.

According to the Grand Livre du MOB, in 1931, the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits et des Grand Express Européens (International Sleeping-Car and Great European Expresses Company) built four high-comfort Pullman cars at its own expense to run on the MOB line. However, with the world in the grip of the Great Depression, the four cars were withdrawn from the fleet in 1931 – just a few months after they were introduced. The Golden Mountain Pullman Expresses of the early days therefore continued their journey alone.

A ntarctica, the southernly continent surrounding the South Pole, is the coldest and driest region on earth. These 14,000 km 2 of ice-encased, heavily wind swept desert are home to one of the world’s most unspoiled environments.

Although the Antarctic region ranks among the most inhospitable places on earth, its extreme living conditions do not seem to be completely unbearable for everyone. Whether they inhabit the oceans or live upon the land, the polar regions’ animal, plant, and microbial species have adapted perfectly to the unique conditions of their environment. Let’s discover.

The White Continent Antarctica

3 .8 billion years ago, the Antarctic was not covered by ice or snow, but by rock. The Antarctic as we know it today came about during a period of climatic cooling three million years ago, forming the very first mountain ranges. Unlike the Arctic, with its Eskimo and Inuit residents, the Antarctic has no permanent human inhabitants, other than scientists posted to national observation stations. Nonetheless, its plentiful mineral and oil resources make the Antarctic sought after by many countries. Today, however, the region is one of the most valuable and vulnerable wildernesses on earth. The marine environment offers a rich animal and plant life. Here, we can see penguins, sea lions, elephant seals, whales, albatrosses, and petrels, not forgetting other interesting species such as krill, which hold up the region’s entire ecosystem by acting as food for the majority of its invertebrates. As the Antarctic’s waters are connected to the rest of the world, the region is also home to many sea birds, including the famous emperor penguin. On leaving the icy, rocky beaches to get closer to the South Pole, life becomes rather more muted. While we find no mammals there, we see insects, mosses, all kinds of algae, lichens, and other stunning microscopic plants. Snowfall is frequent, providing soils with nutrients and minerals which are key for the growth of micro bial species. Such reserves enable plants to find the necessary water during the summer season. For when the warmer weather arrives, the snow melts to give way to the tundra, a steppe char acterized by low vegetation. Although nature is small, there are no less than 2,000 different plant species, including flowers, bacteria, fungi, and trees.

ith the advent of satellite photogra phy and aerial shots, everything visible from up above is studied and cataloged by qualified specialists. When it comes to the Antarctic, however, things get much more complicated. This is because the polar region contains a massive subterranean universe which is not very accessible due to the conditions there. As such, it remains some thing of an unknown for the general public.

Few life forms have ever been witnessed in the Antarctic’s total and icy darkness. This infor mation shortfall mainly comes down to the fact that research is both difficult to carry out and scarce. Nevertheless, oceanographers have discovered that a number of species, some probably never been seen before, do call this seemingly stark place home. The enigmatic nature of these yet-to-be-explored icy regions, formed tens of thousands of years ago, is the motivation for expeditions.

espite the harsh conditions, Arctic species reproduce, propagate, and survive thanks to innovative strate gies. Being small is the rule for polar flora. By remaining close to the ground, such plant life makes the most of its heat, while conserving water and reducing the wind load. Dwarfism is commonly found in northern trees such as the polar willow and the dwarf birch, which some times only reach no more than 5 cm in height over the course of their lifetime. While certain species opt for cushion-like flowering, others, such as the moss campion, prefer to grow with their flowers stuck together. Those plants that dare to venture out of the ground and let their stems grow often have their leaves and stems covered with a fine down. This helps them to avoid evapotranspiration under the impact of strong drying winds. Animal species, on the other hand, are able to maintain an optimal body temperature despite the cold, equipped as they are with number of tools – feathers, fat, and fur –to protect themselves from the weather. Species such as tardigrades have a unique metabolism which allows them to withstand hibernation for decades at temperatures as low as –40°C. Last but not least, fish have a unique metabolic system, with highly efficient enzymes and osmo-regulatory molecules which prevent the expected development of ice crystals between their tissues. As a result, they are able to survive in extremely cold waters.

T he Manta Trust, a UK-based charity founded in 2011 by Guy Stevens and Thomas P. Peschak, is dedicated to the international protection of manta rays and their natural environments. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies these animals as an endangered species. Carl F. Bucherer has been supporting this cause, which is particularly important to it, since 2013, by providing logistical and financial resources, and by associating it with its Patravi ScubaTec dive watch. The Manta Trust is celebrating its eleventh anniversary this year. This is an opportunity to take stock of what has been accomplished through various projects sponsored by Carl F. Bucherer. The year 2021 ended with a large-scale expedition, the Manta Trust Far North Maldives Research Expedition 2021, which made it possible to reach previously inaccessible areas. Join the research teams and explore the amazing world of manta rays.

THE MANTA TRUST’S CAUSE AND CARL F. BUCHERER’S UNFAILING SUPPORT

T hey swim in deep waters and can be recognized by their unique spots on their bellies. Their majestic wingspan, which can reach 4.5 m, even 7 m in some families, is impressive. Manta rays are an endangered species, endangered by man and by global warming. The Manta Trust’s international teams of experts, researchers, and educators work to protect the global manta ray population and its habitat. Their work focuses on research, education, population ecology, habitat use, migration behavior, and community engage ment. Manta rays can be found mostly off the Pacific coast of Mexico and the Maldives.

Carl F. Bucherer is happy to work together with the Manta Trust on-site, providing concrete and very significant support. After all, research requires time and money as well as expertise.

The generosity of the watchmaking company has resulted in major advances. The year 2021 saw the tenth anniversary of the Manta Trust and a key expedition, fully funded by Carl F. Bucherer – mission accomplished for this duo determined to save manta rays. The ambassa dor of this commitment is Carl F. Bucherer’s mag nificent and high-performance Patravi ScubaTec Maldives dive watch. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of this watch is donated to the foundation, and, in particular, used to finance a floating research station for the Manta Trust.

Outcomes: The tagging indicated that manta rays did not move between the offshore islands and the mainland, preferring to stay around the former. As a result, they were able to establish subpopulations there. However, they migrated from north to south during the same seasons and remained for a long time in deep water pelagic zones. The research indicates that manta rays are subject to local-scale pressures from fisheries and bycatch, and therefore are best protected at a local level.

2017 MALDIVES YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT – FINDING THE FOOD OF GIANTS

Purpose of the mission: determine the feeding habits of Maldivian reef manta rays (Manta alfredi) and their adaptability to better target protection measures.

2016 MALDIVES HOW TO SWIM WITH MANTA RAYS FILM

Resources: an educational film to raise public awareness.

Resources: State-of-the-art methodologies consisting of isotope and fatty acid stability anal ysis. Use of an instrument measuring seawater conductivity, temperature, and pressure, as well as an acoustic Doppler current meter to estimate changes in biomass abundance and determine the presence of manta rays at the site. Outcomes: Researchers explored Baa Atoll in the Maldives for 10 days. They success fully collected 92 zooplankton samples and biopsy samples from 18 reef manta rays. These analyses established that manta ray feeding is more diverse than had been thought, and that protective measures should not be limited only to aggregation sites where manta rays feed on the surface.

Purpose of the mission: Produce an educa tional short film for tour operators, to be shown to the public before embarking on manta ray tours. The film teaches viewers how to interact with the animals while snorkeling or diving.

Purpose of the mission: Study the con centration areas of oceanic manta rays and their movements off the Pacific coast of Mexico. Observe their habitat patterns in relation to changing oceanographic conditions. The objec tive was to know if there was a migratory corridor for the species between Bahía de Banderas (on the mainland) and the Revillagigedo Islands (near the coast), and to distinguish the main habitats in order to protect them from fisheries.

UNCOVERING THE SECRETS OF THE CARIBBEAN BLACK MORPH MANTA RAYS

Outcomes: A total of 931 surveys were con ducted to locate manta rays east of Baa Atoll. The 5,000th reef manta ray in the Maldives has been identified. A combination of 101 remote underwater video systems and two long-term time-lapse cameras were deployed at seven sites. Measurements and ultrasound scans as documentation for a PhD project underway at the University of Cambridge. 86

Resources: Courses and activities around environmental protection (on the use of plastic, waste management, or beach cleaning) pro vided to students over four months.

Outcomes: Three initial aerial surveys had been conducted in September 2019 before the mission was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Manta rays have not been sighted, but the mission did record the presence of other animals such as whale sharks, and activities such as commercial shipping and fishing within the biosphere reserve, increasing the risk of threats to manta rays.

Purpose of the mission: Confirm the pres ence of manta rays in the whale shark biosphere, where their diet is studied, and in the surround ing areas. Locate additional foraging areas and initial cleaning stations in the area, as cleaning is essential to the survival and socialization of this species.

Outcomes: Twenty-eight students from the Dharavandhoo School in Baa Atoll attended this training, which they then completed through modules. Education was also provided at local schools in Laamu and Lhaviyani Atolls. Finally, the teams created the first festival dedicated to manta rays in the Maldives, attended by more than 1,000 visitors, 11 local schools, and the guest of honor, former president Mohamed Nasheed.

Purpose of the mission: For the first time in 15 years, researchers were unable to go into the field because of the pandemic and lockdown. Funding for an oceanographic vessel allowed them to resume exploration once travel was again permitted. They were going to find out what had happened during their absence – four months without tourism or ranger management. What had happened to the manta rays?

Resources: Procurement of an oceano graphic vessel. Surveys conducted by remote observers and underwater video systems. Underwater cameras. Measurements and ultra sound scans.

Resources: Aerial observation to have an overview of all the sites, which are far from each other.

Purpose of the mission: Expand the marine life education program for the protection of manta rays in the Maldives (Marine Education Programme, MEP), as well as to learn how to get Maldivian girls more involved in the protection of the marine environment and the oceans.

T his large-scale project was funded entirely by Carl F. Bucherer. It began at the end of October and was completed on November 17. The data collected will support the efforts of the Manta Trust for years to come.

Led by Guy Stevens, this expedition brought together an international team working from a cruise ship chartered by Carl F. Bucherer and transformed into a floating research station. Thanks to this mobile vessel, they were able to explore, for the first time, the most remote areas of the northern Maldives. Researchers have been simultaneously observing manta rays and their ecosystems, while continuing to educate students in schools.

Here are some key figures of the expedi tion: 16 researchers, marine biologists, teach ers, and journalists, 17 nights at sea, 1,400 km traveled, 400 hours of underwater research, 200 observations of manta rays including 120 in Hanifaru Bay, 35 new individuals identi fied joining the 5,100 present in the Maldives, 300 young Maldivians educated about manta rays and mentored in their vocational choices, 80 students benefiting from diving, snorkeling, and swimming courses. Guy Stevens is grateful to Carl F. Bucherer for funding such research. He says, “Without funding from Carl F. Bucherer, it would have been impossible for our team of researchers and educators to visit some of the country’s most remote coral reefs and islands, and to gain new insights into the regional popula tions of manta rays and connect with local communities.” He also welcomes the diversity made possible by this collaboration among people from different backgrounds, and says, “This unprecedented opportunity to spend an extended period of time with all the members of the team, from different projects and regions, was absolutely invaluable.”

Finally, the team of teachers has imple mented an awareness program on manta rays and global warming in seven schools. The mis sion was fully sponsored by Carl F. Bucherer and by the people who bought the Patravi ScubaTec Maldives watch, with the proceeds going directly to fund the project. Research is a constant back-and-forth between what has already been achieved and what still needs to be done. Each step brings hope for the years ahead. It is a victory over the behavior of humankind, and a compromise with that of Mother Nature. The Manta Trust believes that the manta ray population in the Maldives has now stabilized. Her business acumen entrepreneurial and cos mopolitan spirit contributed to the commercial and international expansion of the watchmaking company. It was her sound advice that encour aged the development of business from Berlin to Santiago de Chile. Unfortunately, it was during one of her regular trips from Europe to South America that Wilhelmina lost her life in a terrible shipwreck in 1927. In 2005, Carl F. Bucherer paid a magnificent tribute to this exceptional woman by launching a women’s watch, limited to 70 pieces, in a lavish Art Deco style, whose design was inspired by the first women’s wristwatch presented by the manufacturer in 1919.

The watchmaking company invites us to these regular appointments and is proud to welcome exceptional women into its large family. The podcast is a moment of sharing where everyone takes the time to express themselves. The conversations are warm, stimulating, sincere, and ... inspiring. To help lead them, Carl F. Bucherer has invited a woman with a passion for watches and encounters, and for life in general. A woman with a great deal of energy and communicative curiosity: Sophie Furley. This journalist specializing in watchmaking and editorial director of WorldTempus, a digital multimedia platform dedicated to watchmaking, also writes about jewelry and sustainable development – to give just some examples, because Sophie likes to branch out. Her interests take her as far as South Africa, working with an organization for which she writes about preserving wildlife as a volunteer. REGARDING THE CONTENT OF THE POD CAST, CAN YOU BRIEFLY INTRODUCE US TO THE WOMEN INTERVIEWED, AND TELL US WHAT YOU REMEMBER FROM YOUR CONVERSATIONS?Episode1/Carole Hubscher, CEO and President of Caran d’Ache: That was the first podcast. I actually discovered a profession that has a lot of similarities with Carl F. Bucherer and the world of watches, especially when it comes to creating beautiful products. There is one thing that stands out: the creativity of all these women. They are all extremely creative in their jobs, and in different ways. I learned that Caran d’Ache had already cataloged 400 colors, but was still exploring more. I was impressed by Carole Hubscher’s creativity and the family model of this brand, of which she represents the fourth generation. Every child in Switzerland receives Caran d’Ache pencils when they start school. Episode 2/Bex Carter, Director of Operations for the Manta Trust: I had already interviewed her three years before. I was thrilled to see her again. It was interesting to hear how the Manta Trust teams worked during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was tough for them. Bex Carter also explained that, in the absence of tourists, the manta rays were a little freer, like nature reclaiming its rights. I had the opportunity, a few years ago, to swim with her team among the manta rays. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. You really got the impres sion that these animals were talking to you and playing hide-and-seek with you. They looked us straight in the eye. I talked about this expe rience with Bex, because she lives it every day. It’s funny because she originally wanted to be a fashion designer. She worked in fashion, but her designs always featured fish. We had a wonderful time.

Episode 3/Lisa Streich, a Swedish com poser who wrote the musical piece Periphery, dedicated to the Manero Minute Repeater Symphony watch by Carl F. Bucherer: She is completely invested in the creative process. Lisa told me that when she composes, she visualizes the piece of music as a sculpture. Something that has a shape. We talked about our respec tive creative processes – she, in writing music, and me, in writing articles. Lisa said to me she could never write any kind of text, just as writing a piece of music is impossible for me. It is this difference in creativity that I find fascinating. There is also something else that stands out about Lisa, as well as the other women in the podcast: their professionalism and all their hard work. To write the musical piece dedicated to the Manero Minute Repeater Symphony watch by Carl F. Bucherer, Lisa studied watch move ments and detailed, exploded views of move ments to understand and be inspired by the mechanism. I thought it beautiful how she went all the way. This quest for perfection is evident in all these women. That’s why they are successful. And that resonates with me.

Episode 4/Noëlle Maritz and Lia Wälti, professional soccer players for the Swiss national team: Noëlle and Lia are from the German-speaking part of Switzerland. English, the official language of the podcast, is not their native language. I take my hat off to all these women because it is difficult enough to express yourself, but even more so when it is not in your mother tongue. Noëlle and Lia had carefully prepared all the answers to the questions. They were such professionals! I was truly impressed. When it comes to soccer, they are really passion ate about it. They had to leave their home and family when they were 14 to live in a boarding school with other sportswomen. It takes a lot of courage to do that. They were subjected to the discipline of sport, to a strict and regimented life. They love soccer, but it takes a lot of motivation.

WHAT IS THE MODEL FOR THE PODCAST ITSELF? AND HOW ARE THE WOMEN INTERVIEWED CHOSEN?

I really wanted to do a podcast about the diversity of jobs. I have two daughters, aged 22 and 19, who are in school and exploring different career options. There weren’t as many options to consider when I was their age. Or, at least, I didn’t know some of them. Over the years, I have met people with more unusual jobs, such as designing fireworks, testing perfumes, and even cleaning up crime scenes – that’s exciting! So, the idea of doing a podcast about different jobs, especially those we don’t know, appealed to me, but I didn’t have the time to make it hap pen. That’s when Carl F. Bucherer contacted me about the She Is Speaking podcast. It was like a gift from heaven. I immediately wanted to do it because I found the medium very interesting, and because it was about different women with incredibly interesting and different jobs. And that’s fascinating! It was fate.

Carl F. Bucherer selects the women to be interviewed. I’m also providing ideas. The epi sodes run about once a month and last, on average, 20 minutes. Sometimes, we go longer because they are such interesting women. We want to keep talking to them. This means that our timing is flexible, varying between 20, 30, and 40 minutes. We don’t want to cut short the conversation, it should come to a natural end. The interview is conducted face-to-face, and is recorded in a pod car, a mobile recording studio of Audiokanzlei, which takes my guests and me all over Switzerland. We talk to each other before the podcast so we can get to know each other better. This allows me to put them at ease because there’s always a little bit of stage fright during a recording. You have to forget about the equipment all around, and just have a nice conversation. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR THE CONVERSATIONS? DO YOU ASK THEM ALL THE SAME QUESTIONS? ARE ALL WOMEN ASKED THE RAPID-FIRE QUESTIONS? Many of the questions are similar, but each time I prepare the questions, I do research on the person. During the phone call before our meeting, I try to find out what they want to share so that I can emphasize those points. As for the rapid-fire questions, I try to understand the person. I have a set of about 30 questions, and I ask each person the ones that seem the most appropriate. The interviewees don’t know about this before the podcast. The concept is modeled after the Proust Questionnaire.

Episode 5/Ruth Buscombe, Head of Racing Strategy of the F1 Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN team: I am crazy about cars myself because I have four brothers who love cars. Ruth is in charge of the entire racing strategy. For example, she decides when to change the tires due to the weather or rain. She explained to me that it was just math, with everything being calculated. She is also the only woman in her field. There are very few women in Formula 1. She knew she wanted to do this job from child hood. She played with cars the way others play with dolls. And so she now works in this field surrounded by men. She went to a top school in England to become an engineer before special izing in F1. She also works for The Girls on Track organization, created by the FIA and Motorsport UK to encourage girls and women to work in the automotive industry. She is a wonderful woman who inspires others and helps young people.

Episode 6/Wendy Holdener, Alpine skiing world champion and Swiss Olympic medalist: Again, I was impressed by her passion and hard work. Wendy attributes her love of speed to the time she spent as a child chasing after her two older brothers on the ski slopes, trying to catch them. That training ultimately made her the fast est in the family! Whenever I interview athletes and celebrities, I am struck by how hard they work, regardless of what they do. As the famous, and particularly inspiring, saying goes: success is 1% genius and 99% hard work. I definitely felt that with Wendy. She trains both on the slopes and in the gym, which she calls dry-run training. All year long, she pushes her body to improve her performance so she can hit the slopes at an incredible speed. For Wendy, success means being the absolute best. You only have to talk to her to realize how much this young woman is invested in it.

For one, for example, it was the death of her father that caused her to take over the running of the family business. Every time I asked them this question, their answers just poured out. THEY ALSO SHARE THE CONCEPT OF CHALLENGE. THEY LIKE TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE, AND THEY ARE FIGHTERS. I was surprised by one thing. At first, I thought I would ask them how they felt about being women among men. But they don’t give it any thought. They are where they are because they want to be there. They wanted to be what they are today, and nothing could stop them. You are the best, you have earned that posi tion, and it has nothing to do with your gender. They are not afraid, they go for it, they face one challenge after another, and keep looking for ward, without ever looking back.

DO SOME, LIKE RUTH BUSCOMBE, HELP YOUNGER PEOPLE IN THEIR PROFESSION? Ruth is very much involved in The Girls on Track. All of the women featured in the podcast have reached a point in their careers where they are very busy and don’t have enough time to commit to helping young people. But all of them want to do it at one time or another. There is one question I like to ask them: What advice would you give to a young woman who has been following your career? They always have lots to say, coming up with answers without hav ing to think about them.
