PERFECT AIM

IN THE SAME WAY MY HAIR, MY PREFERRED CUT OF JEANS, AND MY EXTRACURRICULARS

have changed since my early 20s (and thank goodness), so, too, has my idea of the perfect house.

When my husband and I were young, hip, and newly married, “perfect” was a trendy townhome in the middle of the city. Now settled with four featherand fur-babies of our own, home for the last 10 years has been a mature craftsman that we’ve spent every spare dollar and weekend making perfect for this season of our lives.

But lately I’ve been thinking about my next evolution. Life experiences, wanderlust, and more than a few D Home featured houses have helped me develop a wishlist of what I’d like my future “perfect” house to have. Water feature? Check! Central courtyard? Check! Good flow for entertaining? Double check!

We recently purchased a pair of lakeside weekend

retreats, both of which have influenced my list in ways that have somewhat surprised me. The first—a cozy, compact A-Frame— made me realize my fondness for closed-concept floorplans. The second—a zen-like geodesic dome that’s put me in touch with my hippie side—has me convinced I need a dry sauna, stat.

Here’s the amazing thing: Whatever items are on your own must-have list, they’re just a phone call (and a few bucks) away. Indeed, this book is filled with the skilled and experienced wish granters who can make that book-lined library, well-stocked wine cellar, or backyard oasis you’ve been dreaming of a reality. Decide down the line that you’d rather repurpose that library as a recording studio? No problem. Your home should— and, with the help of the right team, can—be a reflection of your personal (and ever-changing) definition of perfect.

IT’S WHO YOU KNOW

MY AUNT AND SOMETIME D HOME CONTRIBUTOR, GINNY BAUER, OFTEN SAYS, “It’s not what you see; it’s where you sit.” Being a New Yorker, she’s usually referring to a Broadway performance or concert. As I’ve gotten more established—and no longer have to scrounge for pennies for a sad balcony ticket to see a favorite show—I have 100 percent adopted this philosophy. (Aunt Ginny also imparted in middle-schooler me that “everyone in the hallway has a vote,” and my God, I owe her big time for that, being that Dallas is quite the small town. Wise woman, that one.)

Going to a city or work conference you’re not thrilled about? Flying first class helps. Driving down that dreaded, treeless portion of Mockingbird Lane for the third time in a day? A luxury vehicle softens the visual blows. (As a Lakewood resident, I speak with some authority here.)

Of course, money doesn’t hurt. Nor does it buy happiness. And I know there are performances

that even the best seats can’t salvage. But as I’ve been thinking about what makes living in Dallas so pleasant most of the time, I’m certain it’s not necessarily where you live, it’s how you live and perhaps even more importantly, who you know, that makes all the difference in the world.

D Home’s 2023 Annual Edition is dedicated to all the “who” in the revised adage above. Each spotlight delves into a design professional’s areas of expertise, passion, and how they can help you create a beautiful life in Dallas.

Working at D Home, we are privileged to have a front-row seat to inspiration from Dallas’ design community daily. We hope this edition, and every issue for that matter, grants you that same access to the finest talent and treasure our city has to offer. Beauty abhors a vacuum. In a region that has few natural moments of beauty, it’s our designers, architects, builders, landscapers, and showroom makers who fill the void, and make Dallas an even better place to live.

AMY GIBBS INTERIORS

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

Amy Gibbs Interiors is focused on not only transforming the homes of clients but on having the process be friendly and enjoyable. Interior design is a thoughtful business, and bringing peace, beauty, joy and contentment through the design and details is very important.

What services do you offer?

My services start with a consultation with clients about their project. After the meeting, we get a good scope of the project and full design services are offered based on what was discussed. Every client and project is different, of course, but determining what needs to be done is where AGI comes in. We help execute, from finish out to details on the cocktail table; it’s important it all works together.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Unique. Personal. Color-infused. That’s a challenge with only three words!

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

A family home is my favorite project. How you feel in your home is so important. I love creating something wonderful for my clients and their families. I want to create a space that’s loved and enjoyed!

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

I don’t have a formula for each home. My design is very specific for each client and how they live. I want them to love the process and love their homes. I hope they look back and say, “I can’t imagine working with anyone else!”

What do you love most about what you do?

I love install day. I love it when everything is delivered, all the art is hung, rugs are spread, and details are on the shelves. My favorite part of what I do is revealing the beautiful space to my clients! I love their reactions and knowing I created something wonderful for them.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

Having had an interest in art, architecture, and creative activities from a young age, I had planned to become an architect. However, I deviated and graduated with a business degree instead. After a career in the corporate sector, I took a hiatus to be home with my children before they entered school. When thinking about returning to work, I had a light-bulb moment and ventured on a new path in architecture and interior design.

What services do you offer?

We are a full-service design firm offering design and procurement for every aspect of home updates, including furniture, fixtures, window coverings, and accessories. Elevations and 3D drawings are part of our services as well, which enable a homeowner to see their design before work has begun. We also offer project management for renovations and new construction, working closely with contractors,

architects, and home builders so our clients can rest easy knowing everything is going as planned.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

Our projects are typically full service, though we do offer a “Designer for a Day” service for individuals who want a professionally designed space but wish to implement the design themselves.

What trends are you excited about for 2023?

I am excited to see color and pattern trending back. I can appreciate the monochromatic look and a soft color palette, but one of my favorite things to do is mix colors and patterns in unexpected ways.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

I feel our designs, although aesthetically beautiful, are more relaxed. Many of our clients have children of all ages and want a professionally designed home that looks custom but feels comfy.

What else would you like our readers to know about you?

My husband is a smart technology and audio-video consultant and installer, so I get to see firsthand what’s new in the latest home technology introductions. We often work side by side on projects, which is an added convenience for our clients. We have come up with some very creative home media designs and technology solutions through the years.

BODRON

/ FRUIT

Give us a brief history and overview of your company. We freelanced together and found that our artistic visions were uniquely aligned. It made sense to join forces, so we founded Bodron/ Fruit in 1998. Since then, we’ve built a team of creative individuals who share a passion for design. Our work is tailored to the client’s needs through careful collaboration between architectural elements and the details of the interiors, melding architecture and design.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

Both of us knew we wanted to be in architecture and design from a very young age. In his childhood, Mil would sketch floor plans and study how furniture worked in a space. He remembers riding his bike around his hometown in Louisiana, looking at houses. Svend loves to make things. When he isn’t sketch-

ing or building a model, he is in his garage crafting something with his two boys.

What services do you offer?

Our firm balances impeccable interior design and exceptional architecture to create noteworthy buildings with purpose and function. We make the best use of space—from positioning windows to leverage natural light from a courtyard to configuring a seating arrangement to reveal the perfect view.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Restrained design and cohesiveness. Our team is methodical and purposeful throughout the design process. Each project is a new opportunity to create something unique for our clients. Establishing expectations comes first in an

iterative process that builds upon itself with each drawing, furniture plan, 3D rendering, material selection, and site visit until the project is complete.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

Our attention to detail and seamless execution of each project set us apart. Due to the breadth of our services, we’re able to mutually consider the architecture and interior design so that the project has a clear vision.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

We enjoy working on both new builds and existing homes. Beginning a design from scratch is equally as fulfilling as bringing new life to an existing home.

BONICK LANDSCAPING

What services do you offer?

We are a full-service landscape design, build, and garden care company. Our services also include pool construction and care.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Good design is first and foremost; we want our work to fit the needs of our client and feel right in its environment. We want what we do to stand the test of time. Landscaping can be challenging with the current environmental changes, but we strive to make the process as smooth as possible.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Clean, simple, elegant.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

We strive to make our style feel as if it fits perfectly with the architecture and environment. Our dedication to excellence is why I feel we are still in business after 40

years. We want our customers to love what they receive from us and be able to count on us for after-care. Our clients invest a lot in their surroundings, and we take their trust seriously.

strive to rise to the occasion and create something special.

What trends are you excited about for 2023?

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

Yes. Some of the smaller spaces are by far the best and most rewarding. While we have the capacity to handle large projects, we’re motivated not by size but by creating spaces people will love to be in and use.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

We love a challenge. Whether that be in the design or construction, we

Like we see in fashion, I feel color will be a big thing, in tiles, flooring, and use of new materials in different stones, porcelain, and textiles.

What else would you like our readers to know about you?

This is our 40th year in business. We are so honored to be able to serve DFW. Our success is due to the great people of North Texas. A sincere thank you to all our customers over the years!

My design philosophy is rooted in balance and beauty. I believe in creating beautiful spaces that are functional, useful, livable, and exude timeless elegance.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

I don’t think about my peers as competitors; I think in the design world, we each individually connect with the clients who share our aesthetic and love our look.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be?

Collected, maximalist, and layered.

For us, the measure of a good project is the connection we share with our clients. If we have a great connection, we’re always up for the job!

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

The best projects result when the client trusts us and believes in our plan and vision for the project. We also adore a house with history—it’s exciting to have the opportunity to incorporate our own twist on an original aesthetic.

Cantoni is based in Dallas, Texas, with two retail stores on Alpha Road and a to-the-trade showroom in the Dallas Design District on Dragon Street.

What product range do you offer, and what do you specialize in? What are some of the most sought-after lines you carry?

CHERI ETCHELECU INTERIOR DESIGN

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

At Cheri Etchelecu Interior Design, we provide high-end design services for residential clients. As the firm’s principal, I develop each project by understanding the client’s goals. Our team is dedicated to using a multi-layered approach, seamlessly mixing old and new elements alongside treasured objects, resulting in personalized spaces where our clients can live both a comfortable and beautiful life.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

I was inspired by my mom, who was always doing projects around the house when I was a child. Because my dad was in the oil business, we were constantly moving, and I would watch her do updates

to our homes that always turned out beautifully.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

It is important to me that each home I design reflects the client and not my style or current trends. Before diving into the design process, I always want to explore what the client is looking for, even if I have to discover it with them. This allows me to create a personal space that they love with lasting power not only in the look but in the function.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? I would describe my style as comfortable, refined, and storied.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

What distinguishes me from my competitors is my emphasis on delivering a home, not a project. I want every design I complete to function as well as it looks. I’m careful to create spaces that are classic, livable, and stray away from trends.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

It’s not so much the size or scope that are determining factors when taking on a new job, but knowing that, as a designer, I can bring true value to the project. At this stage in my career, I always seek projects that will bring a challenge.

What trends within your industry are you excited about for 2023?

People have become much more open to color, pattern, and textures, which I have always loved! Watching this trend continue is exciting, and I believe it will result in much more unique and personalized homes.

For readers who are unfamiliar, can you explain what Dallas Market Center is?

We are a Design Center open to the trade as well as a wholesale marketplace with trade events throughout the year. For designers, we offer more than 1 million square feet of design resources, including major home furnishings brands, artists, and makers who are showcased in permanent showrooms across multiple buildings. In fact, over the last 10 years, we have added dozens of new home accent brands, global design, furniture, lighting, and more. We also offer design resources in temporary booths during our trade events. In 2022, we reimagined the design collections available during our twice-annual Total Home & Gift Market, including the debut of High Style Dallas and the launch of an antiques marketplace.

Can you explain what each DMC building houses?

The Interior Home + Design Center offers design resources as well as floral and holiday. The World Trade Center is the largest building and offers numerous design resources as well as gift, fine jewelry, and apparel/accessories.

The Trade Mart offers select design resources, including accents and tabletop as well as the largest selection of lighting.

What makes Dallas Market Center unique from other trade centers?

Designers tell us our marketplace offers them a convenient, single location to discover and source a wide range of products. Major brands are represented, but we also have individual artists, found objects, global art, and more. The collections are updated weekly so there is always something new to discover. Most importantly, the

staff is extremely friendly and creates strong partnerships with designers.

What support and services do you provide for exhibitors and buyers? Our services begin with being open every day. We also have special events like the twice-annual Design Weeks, twice-annual Lightovation show, and the Total Home & Gift Markets taking place four times per year. We have a range of support services for the design community, including valet parking, an open-daily Starbucks and on-site restaurants, easy-to-use website and app, and porter service. Finally, we have team members dedicated to helping designers. That includes our VP of Design, Michael Bauer, as well as our new Lighting Concierge, Arturo Maluy, who can help with planning and new product discovery.

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

With 20 years of professional design experience, I found my roots in the hospitality sector designing bars, nightclubs, and restaurants with an evocative, unexpected, and glamorous flair. But what I was missing was relationship. Stepping into residential design, I found my calling.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

I love the process of design, the thrill of the hunt, raw creativity, and the satisfaction of everything coming together; but what I value most is my clients. I take great pride in building enduring relationships grounded in trust.

What services do you offer?

Dana Bass Designs offers remodel, new construction, furnishings, and consultation services in the

luxurious, and unexpected. My signature style is infusing textures with patterns, layering elements and mixing vibrant colors to create dream spaces for my clients.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

My highest priority is that each client’s space reflects who they are and how they function in their home. I try to cultivate a creative dialogue with my clients and their homes. Working between the two, I honor the history and architecture of each project while masterfully

mixing distinctive furnishings and artwork in luxe, yet eminently comfortable homes. My designs are highly intuitive, well-planned, and wholly unique to my clients. I emphasize fun and creativity in my design—and in the design process.

What’s the measure of a successful project?

Happy clients! We love hearing, “You did everything I never knew I wanted, and it’s perfect.”

DEBRA STEWART INTERIORS

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

Debra Stewart Interiors is known for its intelligence and unique sensibility. Our mission is to create meaningful spaces filled with beauty, inspiration, and artistic integrity. With 30 years of experience and a multi-disciplinary approach, we embrace art and architecture in our interior schemes for both new constructions and full renovations. The true virtuosity of our work comes from meaningful collaborations with clients, architects, and contractors to bring each project to life, from concept to completion.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Eclectic—in the mix of modern and

traditional. Linear—clean lines are still important in my mix; the eye needs to rest. Architecture—always honor the architecture.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

I lived in England for five years and became consumed with wanderlust. I was fortunate to travel the world and eventually settled in a bit to further my education before moving home to Texas. The world view of architecture and art allows me to move between styles and disciplines. I am not committed to one style; rather the clients and the architecture guide me.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

I love the construction details. Creating from scratch is the most exciting and where all things are possible. New construction is my favorite, but renovating a lovely older home also brings much joy. It is the possibilities that I love!

What’s the measure of a successful project?

Creating spaces known for their timelessness and attention to detail is paramount in our focus. For every project and every client, our highest hope and greatest achievement will always be to create meaningful homes filled with beauty, inspiration, and artistic integrity.

Can you tell us about an instance in which you delivered exceptional customer service to a client?

Finding the “ungettable”! I have had many great projects in my career, but one of the moments that stands out was when I was tasked with finding additional tile that my clients had found on their Italian honeymoon 10 years prior in California. I discussed it with them on the morning jobsite visit and agreed to be on a plane that afternoon to secure what we could.

DUNBAR

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

I am inspired by my mother, my travels, and being from two cultures (Cuban and American). And you might be able to say even a third culture, Texan!

What services do you offer?

Our residential and commercial interior design services include case goods, rugs, drapery, floor plans, CAD drawings for furniture pieces and/or rooms, and renderings of rooms as well. You name it, we find a way to create it. I don’t like being put in a box...I would feel like a robot!

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

We typically take clients with five to six rooms, but a great deal of our business is old clients who come back to add more. Therefore, no job is too small or too large.

What trends within your industry are you excited about for 2023?

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Be purposeful. Be thoughtful. And most of all, be extraordinary!

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

It’s all in the details, especially the small ones. I love placing monogrammed linens in clients’ powder baths or faux flower arrangements in clients’ homes so they can have guests at any time, and it looks like they bought fresh flowers.

What do you love most about what you do?

Once we finish a project, seeing the pure happiness on their faces is the most rewarding part of my job. My goal in the completion of their home is that we change their lives to have a happier, easier, and more peaceful home. It’s so much fun!

What’s the measure of a successful project?

I love when the husbands cry on install day!

I’m excited about detailed moldings, trims, and ceilings. I love it! I think it’s because I have been watching English midcentury series like Belgravia, Sanditon, and Bridgerton. I have looked at those shows repeatedly and hit pause just to study the details in every room. It’s such timeless elegance at its best!

EJM INTERIOR DESIGN

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

My mother, Cindy Ellett Miciotto. She was an accomplished and wellrespected interior designer who taught me about art, travel, style, and appreciating the beauty of nature and the nature of beauty.

What services do you offer?

We offer residential and commercial interior design as well as consulting and curating of art and acquisitions.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be?

Timeless. Curated. Evolving.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

I work to continuously evolve with different styles. I have an appreciation for all styles of interior design,

be it classic or modern. There are so many different styles to appreciate and discover. I’m always open to working with and learning a new style. It challenges me to think beyond what I have already seen and worked with.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

Absolutely. I’m always open to meet people who are interested in my work and collaborating. It can be a consultation for art placement, new bedding, finish selections for a bath, a remodel, or new construction.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

Honestly, I enjoy all my projects. It’s extremely validating to be asked to collaborate on any project and to be creative.

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize about your line of work?

That it’s actually a job—and not an always glamorous job. There is a big misconception that interior design is frivolous and doesn’t require any work beyond selections. It’s also very competitive, as well. I find that there is conflict of interest in who is the trade and who is the public.

What do you love most about what you do?

I’m very lucky; I love what I do. My job allows me to be creative and create art—that’s what I love the most about it. I can’t sing and I’m not a painter (although I wish I could). I want to be creative, and interior design allows to me express myself through tangible beauty.

IBB DESIGN FINE FURNISHINGS

Give us a brief history and overview of your company. Once an interior design solo effort on the part of designer Beth Rafferty, the business she founded more than 35 years ago has since grown into an award-winning design firm encompassing a fine furnishings retail store and design resource center staffed by more than 37 professional designers.

IBB Design Fine Furnishings, located in Frisco, offers a diverse mix of name-brand home furnishings, home decor, and accessories hand-selected by its design staff from markets around the world. IBB is a four-time winner of the “Best Furniture Store in the United States.”

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

At IBB, we carry high-quality manufacturers that make longlasting, attainable, luxury furniture, and we make it available immediately from our showroom to your home. We believe in educating our clients to invest in “heirloom quality” furnishings that enable them to keep their furniture for longer periods of time, rather than lesser quality “disposable furniture.” This prevents it from being hauled off to landfills, thus leaving a smaller environmental footprint and providing designs with longevity.

IBB Design Fine Furnishings is a full-service fine furnishings store and interior design center known for offering high-quality, designer-brand furnishings and fashioning color-infused spaces.

Our designers have perfected the art of balancing color, texture, and pattern over the years while designing unique interiors for our clients. With or without a designer, patrons can shop our diverse mix of home furnishings, home decor, and accessories.

Our motto is “We Make Living in Style Easy.” Our store is arranged in a way that makes it easy for customers to shop the floor. JASON OSTERBERGER DESIGNS

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

I am a Louisiana native and received my Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) degree from Louisiana State University—currently the second ranked BLA program in the nation. Upon graduating, I relocated to Dallas, where I started my career as a landscape designer and project manager for a residential designbuild firm. In my first year there, I received the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association’s 1999 Distinction Award for Texas Excellence in Landscaping for Residential Design. In 2004, I started my own firm, Jason Osterberger Designs. Over the past several years, we have garnered multiple landscape design awards and have become a leader in the industry.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Our team approach to design and working closely with clients is the foundational element of our success. Our design philosophy is based on the concept that first, a garden is something to experience; second, a garden is always in motion; and third, a garden should be in constant seasonal change or evolving. The overarching company goal is to offer each client a unique creative solution for their outdoor living environment.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

The initial design process begins with developing a relationship with the client—understanding their needs and desires will help create a plan to fit their lifestyle.

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize about your line of work?

The earlier you involve us in your project, the better. Whether it is a new build, renovation, or outdoor overhaul, allowing us to work with your architects, interior designers, etc., gives us a chance to marry the home with the outdoors and plan ahead to make sure things like drainage and electrical (for outdoor lighting) are taken care of. Hardscape can change the exterior of the home, so it is vital in a new build to have us involved in the planning process.

How has the pandemic impacted your business?

Outdoor living has a focus on it like never before. So much time at home has caused people to dream big for their outdoor spaces and in turn demand is higher than ever. We have faced the same supply chain and material issues like the rest of the industry but are confident that our clients trust our process and, with patience, will be very satisfied with the end result.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

I’ve loved interiors since I was 8 years old when my mom let me wallpaper my bedroom.

What services do you offer?

Full scale residential design…and a fun work environment!

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Collected. Classic. Timeless.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

What’s the measure of a successful project? A happy client!

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize about your line of work?

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do? There’s more than one answer, and there’s more than one way to make things happen.

One where I am able to push the boundaries and one where the client trusts and believes in our creative vision. My favorite type of project is when there is trust in the client, designer, architect, installers, and anyone else’s hands that make the project come together.

People don’t realize the amount of detail and time that can go into one item that might make all the difference in a room, as well as the number of moving parts it takes to make a project come together.

What trends within your industry are you excited about for 2023?

Shorter lead times and less obstacles…we hope!

MICHELLE’S INTERIORS

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

I opened Michelle’s Interiors in 2008, following a dream of helping others by creating beautiful spaces in their homes. As a second career in my 30s, I knew a bit about growing a business, so I worked for friends for free while I was in design school, shadowed other designers, and learned the ropes. We’ve grown into a busy, full-service firm, but we retain our boutique approach and personal touch, building relationships with each of our clients.

What services do you offer?

We offer a full range of design services—from remodel designs and new construction interior designs to turnkey room and whole-home design.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

I see my job as helping others by creating a happy, peaceful, and safe environment in which to live, raise a family, and welcome guests. I believe our homes are an integral part of our personal joy. Spaces that uniquely express who we are, that welcome those we love, and that create visual peace quite literally change how we feel about ourselves.

My goal is to create joy and peace by creating beautiful homes.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Classic, airy, and warm.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

Our goal isn’t to grow as large as we can. We stay small on purpose, and I am completely hands-on with my

designs. I meet clients where they are, taking their style and “waving my magic wand” to create a space that uniquely reflects what they love and what brings them joy.

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize about your line of work?

It is definitely more complicated than how it appears on TV! It takes an incredible depth of knowledge about everything from fabric to furniture frames to plumbing and flooring; you have to understand all about materials, how things are made, and how they should be used. The best designers are organized creatives, and they do way more than put together colors. They do drawings and renderings, they can visualize the finished product, and they are wise about how to relate to people.

What do you love most about what you do?

Getting to stand in a completed room and soak up the peace and the joy of it, and then watching the happiness of our clients when they see their new space for the first time.

What else would you like our readers to know about you?

Because of my background in counseling, communicating with clients and helping them make decisions comes easily to me. I love finding common ground between spouses with different styles, and I am good at discerning things a client has a hard time putting into words and understanding what a client needs to be truly happy in their home.

What services do you offer?

Schlosser Design Group, an awardwinning interior design firm, was launched in 1998. Our practice began with a wide variety of spaces from commercial to residential remodels. As we gained success, we developed expertise in kitchen and bath design and custom cabinetry. Our focus has been creating warm and welcoming spaces that are both functional and luxurious and meet our clients’ long-term needs.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

Practicing interior design allows me to utilize my business background and wear my creative hat

at the same time. My passion is my practice and making an impact on the lives of my clients is very rewarding!

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Every space I design regardless of the style feels calm and organic. No one single element catches your attention, but all the elements work together harmoniously. Your space should be a perfect backdrop for the art on your walls with all visual noise eliminated.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Balanced. Welcoming. Harmonious.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

Our typical projects are over $100,000, but we will engage a client for a project with a minimum of $50,000.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

When we are hired to be involved from the onset, prior to a contractor. In a new build, we like to be included at the same time as the architect or builder. In a remodel, we prefer to be the first point person. We are better able to design for our clients and provide them with ideas when we aren’t limited by prior work or preconceptions. We like to bring the contractors in after the initial concept is drawn up so we can get feedback to apply to the design. Our favorite project is a complete project with construction and furniture, etc. Custom furnishings are so fun and exciting!

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

My technical knowledge and skills regarding implementing a design. And historically, I have been on the forefront of design trends long before the industry adopted a direction as mainstream.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

I get to know my clients well. I design their homes with their interests and personalities reflected throughout.

What’s the measure of a successful project?

The greatest reward and measure of success at the end of a project are happy clients.

I love working on projects where the client is willing to take chances and infuse a bit of fun into their home.

What trends within your industry are you excited about for 2023?

The mix of classic styles from different periods. Splashes of color in a neutral room. Rooms saturated with color are always spectacular, but there is always a place for a pure white room.

STUDIO THOMAS JAMES

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

After spending several years in Colorado designing high-end vacation homes, I decided to make Dallas the home base for my business. I launched Studio Thomas James in 2012 and knew I wanted to build a dynamic team of specialized individuals to bring our clients’ homes to fruition, and that’s exactly what our firm has become. I feel our long-term success is largely due to our meticulous attention to detail and hands-on approach.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

My grandfather was a master craftsman, machinist, and woodworker, and he spurred my love of handiwork. My mother and grandmother were also vital to my budding interest in interior design. Descended from generations of collectors, they were always experimenting with the spaces in our home, often moving furniture in and out. I knew I wanted to be

an interior designer by the age of 10. I even asked Santa for a new chandelier for my bedroom one year for Christmas.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Classic. Innovative. Refined.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

Although our firm’s designs focus on interiors, our team utilizes our vast architectural expertise to give a room’s form and function mutual consideration, which sets our work apart. We also create detailed drawings and have an incredibly streamlined design process.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

We love working on projects where we are intimately involved in the early architectural detailing and can shape the overall direction.

What’s the measure of a successful project?

Spaces can be beautiful and highly detailed, but if you have missed the client’s true desires, then the project is a failure.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love that each and every day I have the opportunity to be creative and to be challenged. I try to learn something new every day.

SUSAN BALDWIN, ALLIE BETH ALLMAN & ASSOCIATES

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

I have had the fortune of celebrating 20-plus years of residential real estate sales. I have enjoyed every minute. I love working with both local clients and also executives moving here from out of town. Over my career, I have averaged close to 50/50 on buyers and sellers, and I enjoy working with both equally.

What areas/neighborhoods do you specialize in?

My main areas are Park Cities, Preston Hollow, and North Dallas, but I do quite a bit in Plano, Frisco, and beyond (like Celina and McKinney), as well as in Southlake and Flower Mound.

How do your clients benefit from your background as an attorney?

Buying and selling a home has become more complicated and also

more competitive. I practiced law for over 10 years in a transactional practice, mainly in commercial real estate. My background as an attorney and my negotiating skills are in use every day! I pay attention to detail and think through problem areas. My background helps me to keep calm under pressure and not lose my cool, something my clients tell me gives them confidence.

What are some of the top features today’s buyers are looking for in a home?

A home that is move-in ready is always in demand. I tell my buyers that there is an opportunity if you can find a home with a good layout that just needs a little tweaking. Work spaces for adults and kids are popular, as are pools and indoor/ outdoor living spaces. Kitchens where people can live and cook. And buyers always love a good closet!

How do you ensure client satisfaction?

I will do almost anything to make sure every transaction is a success. I will work through problems, listen to what my clients are telling me, and we will keep working until they are satisfied. Buying and selling a home can be stressful for many reasons, but there are very few instances where you can’t do something to make a client happy.

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

Twenty years ago, I opened Talulah Belle in Lakewood. I wanted somewhere that offered specialty gifts and curated items to meet a variety of needs. When Talulah Belle hit our 10-year mark, we found ourselves outgrowing our space and product selections. Our expansion into the space next door allowed us to meet the demand for modern furniture and home accessories at a price point that could fit any budget. We opened HESS-Home Essentials Simply Stated in 2012, giving our customers an expanded collection of home decor, art, furniture, lighting, and textiles. In 2017, we had an opportunity to relocate to a 3,000-square-foot showroom space, and we merged our two brands, combining our product offerings into a unique shopping experience.

What product range do you offer, and what do you specialize in?

Our community is at the core of our inspiration. A mix of modern and historic, our clients’ needs influence many of our design and product choices. We strive to offer our clients exceptional value, with quality products at a mix of price points. Original art and luxury goods beautifully blend with comparable pieces at a lower price. As a true lifestyle boutique, we offer the best in gift, home, baby, loungewear, and more. Add to that our fresh flowers, chocolate, and wine, and we have something for everyone.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your offerings?

Every year, Talulah & HESS features a theme or focus and carries that through the holiday season. In these themes, we thoughtfully select our product offerings, design the updated store layout, and create a cohesive story. This approach follows us throughout the year when ordering for each season. It allows us consistency and gives our customers fresh inspiration and something new. This year, we’ve expanded our luxury goods offering based on feedback from our clients.

What are the cornerstones of your company? What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

We strive to offer a something-foreveryone experience. Our success is rooted in our mission of “Beautiful Giving, Modern Living.” It is

our hope that Talulah & HESS supports that for our clients. Our incredible team works tirelessly to offer clients goods and an experience to enhance life, give back to the community, and elevate the everyday.

For someone who has never visited your store, what can they expect?

Our clients’ experience in-store has always been integral to our success. From the moment you step inside our blush pink doors, we aim to delight all five senses. On weekends, we offer complimentary champagne and chocolate truffles. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and meant to offer clients a space to unwind and be themselves. Our ever-changing product offerings keep clients engaged and excited to discover something new with every visit.

TERRI BECKER DESIGNS

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

Terri Becker Designs specializes in interior and exterior design for both residential and commercial remodels, leading teams to make projects happen. We were voted Best of DFW as the Best Interior Design Firm by the Dallas Morning News in 2021. I am an ASID award-winning designer with the recognition of Houzz readers, too.

Terri Becker Designs offers turnkey design services to realize a client’s vision. I strive to be a trusted guide and partner throughout the entire remodeling process, from design planning to final touches, making the process as stress-free as possible.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

I am a small boutique remodeling firm, so I hire out all the talent to

make the project a reality. I really enjoy bringing in local artists when possible.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Fresh. Innovative. Bold.

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize about your line of work?

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

My sweet spot is large-scale renovations. I have done them all and enjoy certain aspects of them, but big projects are my preference.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

My favorite type of project is one where the client wants to go bold and make a statement. With creative license, the level of creativity feels authentic, real, and pure.

The thing about design that a lot of people don’t realize is that there are so many hats you have to wear, including marriage counselor. Doing a large-scale project can be very challenging, so sometimes being the beacon of reason is half the battle in creating a space that reflects the client. Helping couples navigate it all is challenging but rewarding in the end.

What else would you like our readers to know about you?

I am so excited to be on the Board for the Dallas ASID design community! We have some fabulous projects planned with Habitat for Humanity.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your offerings?

We are known for our modern aesthetic but offer many wonderful traditional designs as well.

What are the cornerstones of your company?

We are a trade-only showroom, but the public is welcome to visit and learn about our industry.

What upcoming trends or products are you especially excited about for 2023?

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

I founded Tori Rubinson Interiors in 2013. With a passion for classic interiors, my goal is to create lay ered interiors that seamlessly blend old with new—and to create spaces that are as comfortable as they are beautiful. TRI focuses on largescale remodels and new construction with whole-home design. We help our clients from architectural planning all the way to the accessories on the shelves.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

A lifelong love of interiors—along with a natural eye—led me to work for one of Fort Worth’s most highend builders a decade ago, where I learned the industry and cultivated my point of view. Friends and family began to consult me on home projects, and after the requests started to pile up, I launched my own design business.

and timeliness. The inspiration for our projects comes from our clients: who they are, what they enjoy, how they want to use the home, and their personal aesthetic. Inspiration also comes from the architecture of the home as well as the environment around it. Our philosophy is to create a home that is unique to the individual and is both beautiful and functional!

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

We want to get to know our clients and what their desires are for their home. We also have worked diligently to put people and systems in place to run a top-notch business. We pride ourselves on our communication, management of

expectations, and project timelines and operational support to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

Because we focus so much on every detail of the project as well as serving each of our clients diligently, we do not take on more than we can handle. We also require some project minimums that allow us to really give our clients the true TRI experience and finished results.

YATES DESYGN

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

My husband, Mike, and I were brought together by our passion for style and design, so we decided to marry our professional talents to create Yates Desygn in 2015 and established our Dallas-based headquarters in 2016.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

I studied design at the Pratt Institute after receiving my bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from Texas Tech University. I spent my early career with renowned firm Yabu Pushelberg in New York, where I discovered a love for sharing my clients’ stories through their personal environments.

What services do you offer?

We are lifestyle designers. We get to know the client on a personal level to discover how they want to live in their spaces. Getting to the heart of who they are and what they need from their home is a little like therapy, and it’s our job to utilize design to enhance their lives.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Tailored. Curated. Detailed.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

We carefully evaluate a project in its entirety, ensuring that the architecture, interiors, and landscape design are cohesive. We’re methodical in the way we design and pay attention to every detail.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

We find that our detailed approach is best suited to large-scale projects, but we love chatting with all potential clients to decide if we’re the right designers for them.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

Our favorite projects are with clients who have a shared love of design and want to be involved in the process. We find that the more involved they are, the more perfectly we can tailor their home to their specific desires.

Meet Susan Baldwin Making A Home Selling A Home Being At Home

How do you make a house a home?

By cooking a meal and inviting friends over, and just enjoying the spaces you have with loved ones.

How to get your home ready for the market?

Lighten paint, declutter and clean, and work on the drive up of your home, including painting the front door and planting flowers. I just painted the exterior of my house this summer, Shoji White!

Who is your favorite organizer? Staci Ferber at ReOrgit. She can do anything, whether you’re selling or not!

What white colors do you like for resale? Dover White, White Dove, Cloud White, Shoji White, and Snowbound

#1 things all buyers should consider? I always like a home that my buyers can add upside value to. On one hand, it’s wonderful to buy a brand new home that’s perfection, but can you add a pool? Or just some

personalization? I always think about resale in the future and how they are going to make it better. And then also are you in a location that you love and you can see yourself in, enjoying the amenities and vibe and just someplace where you feel comfortable.

What services do you perform? My team and I want to be your #1 call for the rest of your life, haha! We have a full address book of service providers, we can help with estate sales, decorators, and we have even set up our clients on dates!

What are buyers looking for in 2023? Outdoor spaces, pools, and walkable neighborhoods. Buyers always look for access to schools, shopping, and restaurants. What is your perfect day? Walking the dog, taking a run and being outdoors, showing beautiful homes, finding creative ways to sell listings, and connecting with my wonderful friends and clients!

DESCO FINE HOMES

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

I have been in the homebuilding business since 1976, and I have worked under the Desco banner since 1989. I build, remodel, and renovate. I limit my travel area to North Dallas, and I supervise, in some form, every job taken on.

What inspired you to pursue this line of work?

As a kid I lived in a wooded area and always had some kind of a project going on—a treehouse, forts, or some sort of a building or repair undertaking. I met a builder when

I was 21, bought my first house at 22, and started doing my own improvements. Then, one thing led to another.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

I really pay attention to the details.

I insist on photos or drawings to deliver exactly as clients expect.

I never want to disappoint and truly care about customer/client satisfaction. What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do? Always do the best I can. I want to build like I was building for myself with the mindset of low maintenance and repair.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

No. I will only accept jobs and projects that I know I can do well and perform as expected. Everyone has their limits, and I know what mine are.

What’s the measure of a successful project?

For a contract job, it’s always a happy customer and that the job

comes in on budget with a short punch list. For a spec job, a successful project results in a quick sale, along with the job coming in on budget with a short punch list.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love to step back and look at my creation, knowing that I have changed someone’s life for the better.

What trends within your industry are you excited about for 2023?

Hopefully, that we might see less white-painted brick.

KEY RESIDENTIAL

Give us a brief overview of your company.

Key Residential is a high-end remodeling contractor and custom home builder. We pride ourselves on our approach to customer satisfaction and personalized attention given to each project.

What services do you offer?

We specialize in custom kitchens, bath remodels, whole house renovations, additions, and customdesigned home construction.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Our goal is for our clients to know who we are, like what we do, and trust us with their homes. It starts with developing relationships with clients to understand their ideas and long-term goals for the project.

If you had to describe your style in three words, what would they be? Collaborative, craftsman, professional.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

Key Residential purposefully does not employ in-house designers or architects. This allows clients to bring their preferred design professionals to the remodel team. Further, by partnering with our trusted trade partners and relying on close supervision by members of our team, we can ensure that each project receives the highest quality workmanship possible while still maintaining our clients’ aesthetic.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

While Key Residential is not the contractor for everyone, we are

always willing to visit with and assist potential clients in achieving their remodeling goals. We want everyone to have a positive remodel experience, with or without us, for the benefit of the remodeling industry. Most of our projects fall in the $50,000–$300,000 price range.

What’s the measure of a successful project?

In the current, unpredictable remodeling climate, providing excellent communication to our clients is high priority. As obstacles arise, we feel like the project is successful if we maintain strong relationships with both the trade partners and clients involved. Further, we want the clients to like the end result not just six weeks after the work is complete, but six years after the work is complete—to enjoy it for years and years to come.

THE KITCHEN SOURCE

For 30 years, The Kitchen Source has provided client-focused design and transformation services to Dallas, Fort Worth, and surrounding areas. We partner with homeowners, designers, and builders to fully understand their ideas, needs, and goals for kitchen, bath, and living space remodels.

What services do you offer?

We offer anything from just cabinets and appliances to full turnkey remodels. The scope is highly dependent on the homeowner. We will do as much or as little as they would like during a project.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Listen to the client and do what we say we are going to do the first time.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

Yes, we have worked on projects from 2,000 to 70,000 square feet, from a powder bath to a whole house.

What’s the measure of a successful project?

We love when a client refers us to a friend or sends us pictures in their new kitchen over the holidays. There is no greater compliment.

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize a bout your line of work?

Many believe they must have an interior designer, builder, or general contractor before even walking through the doors. We are open to the public and invite everyone in.

What do you love most about what you do?

We love that no two projects are the same. We strive to truly understand how someone intends to use the space so we can design it for them to enjoy for a lifetime.

What trends within your industry are you excited about for 2023?

We are excited about the continued trend to open spaces up and bring more technology into the kitchen and bathrooms—lighting, heated floors, pop-up mixers, drawer organization, and storage.

What else would you like our readers to know about you?

We are family owned and operated; we are third generation in the business. Each project we work on, we truly understand that we have a responsibility to the client as they are putting a great deal of trust in us by allowing us to work in their home.

LIGHTS FANTASTIC PRO

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

Lights Fantastic Pro was developed to take advantage of the LED lighting revolution—a new era of lighting that requires a different kind of showroom: part product showcase, part design studio, and part idea incubator. Lights Fantastic has been a pioneer in retail and promotional lighting for over 50 years. As technology transforms, Lights Fantastic Pro helps you imagine and implement lighting that enhances your environment. We help architects, designers, and builders tap into the “Power of Lighting.” We focus less on the product itself and more on the environment it creates.

Where is your company based, and how many locations do you have in the Dallas area?

We are based in Dallas and have two area locations—one on Greenville Avenue and one in Lewisville.

What product range do you offer, and what do you specialize in?

We offer a curated selection of the latest in LED lighting in various modern styles. We carry brands from all over the world, including Sonneman Lighting, Buster & Punch, iGuzzini, Flos, and Visual Comfort. We display and merchandise architectural lighting that sets both residential and commercial projects apart.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your offerings?

Our aesthetic is very architectural and transitional to modern styling. Our lighting makes a statement but plays off the architecture and design of the space.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

Rather than simply selling products, we focus on the effects of lighting. The “Luminaries” on

our staff have expertise in creating a great experience for their client. They know how to utilize the latest in lighting to make your space spectacular. Our showrooms are considered the best in the country and completely different from the sea of chandeliers that is most common in lighting stores.

For someone who has never visited your store, what can they expect?

This is far different from a typical lighting showroom. We are a more curated and application-centered showroom that demonstrates how powerful lighting can be to create a special experience.

Are you open to the public or to the trade only?

We are open to the public but also focus on providing the trade with the tools to help their clients achieve their vision. We offer added services

to enhance the project that often the trade finds more valuable.

What upcoming trends or products are you especially excited about for 2023?

LED lighting continues to allow for smaller fixtures and elements that allow you to place lighting exactly where you want it. Combining these cool new lighting elements in unique shapes with smart, app-controlled lighting allows the flexibility and ease of use that has been more complicated to achieve prior to latest product introductions.

What else would you like our readers to know about you?

We have a team of inside sales, project managers, and technical field specialists to support our staff to make sure your service is perfect from design to install to post installation.

KNOX BUILT CONSTRUCTION

What services do you offer?

Knox Built offers a range of services, including custom home building, complete home remodels, home additions, high-rise unit finish out, and multi-family construction. From finding the right lot, helping you connect with the right architect and develop accurate budgets, to managing all aspects of construction, we work with our clients throughout the construction process.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

We pride ourselves on being a “Next Generation Homebuilder.” We have invested heavily in user-friendly project management software that offers our clients vast transparency in the building process and collaboration with our project managers.

It’s essential to our team that we operate so that all our projects are run the same way, new build or renovation, which helps us stay efficient and hold our partner vendors and subcontractors to the highest standards.

Construction is organized chaos. We ask our clients to trust our expertise and that we know how to navigate through the madness. Ultimately, their dream home will be the end result.

What do you love most about what you do?

I have always enjoyed the tangible nature of construction and still often find myself stopping to watch a house demolition or help a trim crew install baseboards for an afternoon. The houses we build are people’s dream homes, and we work hard to fulfill each vision. Bringing these projects to life is exciting every time, as I know they will stand for many years after completion.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

Yes. We have completed projects as small as primary bathroom remodels and up to multimillion-dollar, ground-up new construction. There is nothing we can’t handle!

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

We are true general contractors; we do not have our own style or favorite project type. From ultra-modern to French classical, our team members and partners can achieve any design with a limitless level of detail.

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

In 2004, Mark Robison and I cofounded what was then a residential electric company. Milestone Home Service Co. has since grown into the largest residential service and repair company in DFW, having added plumbing, HVAC, and security to our line of home services. Through strategic acquisitions, Milestone has linked arms to provide garage door repair (Welborn Garage), remediation (Rescue Restoration), handyman services (Hank’s Handyman), roofing (Firehouse Roofing), and more to meet DFW homeowner needs.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

No other home service company in DFW has more positive reviews, more combined years of expertise, more trained technicians, and more trucks on the road. Milestone has

been awarded a number of honors, including SMU Cox School of Business’ Dallas 100 and Dallas Morning News’ Best Places to Work, but it’s our customer base of 600,000 people that truly sets us apart.

What do you love most about what you do?

Can you tell us about an instance in which you delivered exceptional customer service? Exceptional service, to us, is doing the job we said we’re going to do and then going the extra mile. Recently, one of our technicians brought flowers to a homeowner upon hearing she had recently lost her husband. During a torrential rainstorm last year, one technician used his Milestone truck to block the highway, providing shelter to a driver that was stuck on the side of the road.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference—we love handing out treats to the family dog and coloring books for the kids.

What we’re most passionate about is serving people and giving back to the community. In the last five years, Milestone has contributed over $3.5 million dollars to people in need locally, nationally, and across the globe.

What trends within your industry are you excited about for 2023?

In an industry where there is a growing shortage of skilled tradesmen, Milestone is proud to have created our own in-house trade school. Milestone University (MU) is a world-class training school for plumbing, electrical, and AC technicians. Graduates are guaranteed a spot on our team. So far we’ve graduated eight classes, and we’re excited to see this program continue to grow in 2023.

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

My husband, Scott, and I founded New Leaf Custom Homes in 2006 to design and build high-quality, long-lasting homes and relationships that would last for years to come. We began our in-house full-service design studio in 2015 and have since designed and built hundreds of homes for happy homeowners.

This past year, we decided to split off our design studio into its own company, The Design Shop. We had grown a following of architecture and interior design lovers who wanted to work with our talented designers, but were not able to build with us because they were out of our building area, their timeline or budget wouldn’t fit, etc.

What services do you offer?

Our services include: new construction home building, floor plan development, interior drawings, custom cabinetry/millwork drawings, installed finishes and selections all the way through custom furniture, window treatments, styling/staging, and installation.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Building homes. Building relationships. Nothing quite compares to creating a relationship with someone and helping them build something as personal and important as their dream home.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

We are distinguished from our

competitors because we have experience as designers, architects, and builders, and we can help clients eliminate the “building Bermuda Triangle.” Bringing everything inhouse makes it a seamless process for the customer. With construction and architecture services already in place, adding interior design completed the trifecta. It eliminates the go-betweens, so nothing is left to chance.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

We enjoy projects where the clients trust the design process, our expertise, and talent. If we have trust with a homeowner, the possibilities are endless, and we can create something truly special together.

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize about your line of work?

The difficulty in balancing the budget, timeline, and design to align with client expectations. It’s easy to draw something beautiful on a piece of paper. It’s much harder to have these things align with all the client’s priorities.

What trends within your industry are you excited about for 2023?

We are excited about organic materials and patterns, trending curves, and prioritizing wellness and work at home (more intimate workspaces, yoga and gym spaces, etc.).

NORTH HAVEN GARDENS

In 1951, Ralph and Muriel Pinkus founded NHG as a small nursery on nine acres of grassland north of Dallas along Northaven Road. They began with landscaping but quickly included selling retail plants to anyone who would make the drive. With a commitment to quality and value for their customers, the nursery has grown into one of the most respected horticultural ventures in the area. Destroyed by the tornadoes of 2019, NHG has been completely rebuilt better than ever, now reimagined for the future by the third generation of the founding family.

Can you tell us more about what makes your store unique?

We provide a unique retail garden environment covering over four acres with an expansive tropical greenhouse, a huge array of plants suited for North Texas, and knowledgeable Garden Advisors to help our guests succeed. We are known for our classes, workshops, and events, and welcome guests to visit Ralph & Rose, our new café and boutique in the heart of the garden.

What product range do you offer, and what do you specialize in?

Houseplant collectors flock to see what’s new in our tropical greenhouse, always on the hunt for the rare and hard-to-find. We’re known as a destination for gardeners growing their own food and for our extensive, year-round collection of native and adapted perennials. Our Garden Coach program was designed to fill the gap between hiring a professional and learning to garden and maintain your landscape yourself. It’s easy, costeffective, and can really boost the confidence of a new homeowner or novice vegetable gardener struggling to meet their garden’s needs.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your offerings?

As a destination garden center, we’re constantly changing with the seasons. Throughout the year, we offer indoor and outdoor plants, both native and adapted, for success in North Texas. Our gift and boutique spaces feature housewares, accessories, and works of art in an array of styles.

What are the cornerstones of your company? What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

We put a great deal of time and effort into training our staff, and we employ experienced gardeners and horticulturists with a variety of specialties across our sales and administrative teams. Our buying team works tirelessly to source and secure the best quality and best adapted plants for our area, and we do everything we can to connect the dots for our guests, regardless of their level of expertise. We have so much to see! Spread across four acres, the nursery areas offer flowers, perennials, shrubs, and trees for every garden space. Our greenhouse is like a tropical oasis packed with exotic plants from around the world, and our gift and boutique areas always have new, fun, and stylish finds. Stop by the café for lunch or a glass of wine to enjoy while you shop.

Are you open to the public or to the trade only?

We are open to the public.

What upcoming trends or products are you especially excited about for 2023?

Both houseplant collecting and vegetable gardening continue to dominate as trends driving a widespread increase in home gardening, particularly among younger consumers.

What do you wish more people knew about your store or industry? That success with gardening and green spaces doesn’t have to be intimidating but learning more about the natural plant world does take some time and patience. We like to say that plants are like people; you get to know them over time and learn to recognize their unique personalities and needs.

Can you tell us about a particular instance in which you delivered exceptional customer service? We have numerous visitors throughout the year, especially in spring. One of our favorite experiences with our guests is finding someone completely new to gardening whom we can help achieve success. We get many customer responses each year thanking us for a bountiful garden harvest, the perfect roses, or the wonderful memories they’ve created working in their own gardens.

What else would you like our readers to know about you?

If you haven’t yet visited NHG since the rebuild, we invite you to stop in soon! The experience of shopping our garden center and nursery has been transformed for the better, and even those who have visited for decades will find the new NHG a breath of fresh air for the garden enthusiast.

We offer luxury plumbing fixtures and fittings, elegant door and cabinet hardware, and the finest lighting options in North Texas. We carry exclusive lines such as The Galley Kitchen Workstation and Dresser, Classic Brass Hardware, and Visual Comfort Lighting.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your offerings?

Luxurious, exclusive, and often custom, ranging from modern to industrial to traditional. We have something to fit every client’s taste!

Are you open to the public or to the trade only?

We are open to all. We love walkins but encourage appointments. Our staff goes out of their way to meet you at times when our showrooms may not be open as well!

What upcoming trends or products are you especially excited about for 2023?

We saw more dark, rich colors at Design Week in Italy—new hardware and faucet finishes in different warm shades of black and brass as well as some bright colors for all kinds of products. Technology is slowly becoming better integrated, and products are smarter in a more purposeful, useful way. One thing we love is our series of special, exclusive lighted mirrors from one of our Italian partners. They have incredible functionality combined with European beauty and design.

Can you tell us about a particular instance in which you delivered exceptional customer service?

I hope I could tell you about one yesterday, the day before, and the day before that! Seriously, exceptional service is a part of our DNA. We’ve found replacement parts for

plumbing fixtures whose companies no longer exist, we’ve watched and fed dogs and children in our showrooms, and we’ve hand-delivered products to clients hundreds of miles away. But at Pierce, those types of services are really a core part of what we do.

What do you wish more people knew about your store or industry?

I wish more folks knew that custom and exclusive don’t always mean unaffordable. We work with many budgets. I wish they would come into our showrooms and take advantage of our extensive knowledge base earlier in their planning processes, as you’ll have a much more difficult time reaping the many health benefits of a steam shower if you decide to add it after your bathroom remodel is halffinished. What services do you offer?

We are a custom home builder with active involvement in the design process, so we offer design services along with the full construction of the home. With this knowledge and experience, we are able to properly implement those design features into the construction process and execute them. It’s critical to have a builder who understands design in order to execute it properly. We also act as a consultant along the way to work with clients on selecting lots and providing our expertise on how certain lots might impact the design of their home and provide constant value-engineering c onsulting throughout the design for our clients to achieve their budget goals.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Full transparency throughout the process. Whether it is with the client or our trade partners, I want to be fully transparent about costs, timelines, details, and how to prepare for the unexpected.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

My clients work directly with me throughout the entire process and have direct contact with me. They’re not pushed off to a project manager or superintendent.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

No, our company is structured towards full-scope work—new construction homes or full-gut remodels.

What’s the measure of a successful project?

A beautiful home that is on budget, on time, and left with a satisfied and very happy client.

Can you tell us about a particular instance in which you delivered exceptional customer service?

I like to build personal relationships with all my clients, past and present. If they reach out, even with questions or issues that are non-warranty related, I’ll come and help. One previous client called me on a Sunday after a large thunderstorm came through that caused some damage to their roof. I had my roofing contractor there within the hour and never billed them. We wanted to make sure their home was protected from the elements before any additional storms blew through and help ease their anxiety and stress from the situation.

TATUM BROWN CUSTOM HOMES

Give us a brief history and overview of your company.

Tatum Brown began as a custom home builder in 2004 dedicated to designing and constructing highquality, luxury residences. Over time, we’ve discovered something remarkable: The homes we build aren’t just houses. They’re personal. They’re meaningful. They represent everything our clients love and value. The vision for each home may be totally unique, but our commitment to fulfilling every single detail never wavers.

What is your philosophy as it pertains to the work you do?

Our philosophy is to create quality homes for quality people. Our team

always finds a way to go above and beyond to meet our clients’ requests, no matter their needs.

What do you feel distinguishes you from your competitors?

What sets us apart is our unrivaled team approach and comprehensive service offerings. Every single specification of your future home is our priority, no matter how small the details may be. Our people make the difference. From day one, you’ll have a full team dedicated to making your homebuilding experience an exceptional one. Our professionals love what they do and are the best in the business.

Will you take on projects of any size or scope?

We will take a project of any size or scope as long as it is within our capacity. We also always want to make sure it’s a fit personality-wise between our team and the client, so the job is more harmonious and leads to a better end result. It also comes down to timing. We always want to take on new jobs that we can do effectively and efficiently.

What’s your

favorite type of project to work on?

I love when the energy and enthusiasm of the client is synchronous with our team. We love all types of architecture, but there is nothing better than a project where the architect, designer, general contractor, and client are all collaborating.

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize about your line of work?

We pride ourselves on the fact that we have never built the same house twice. What people don’t realize is that it can be a very fluid process, and we aren’t going off a blueprint for success; every architect, client, and designer is different. We are essentially building art, and it’s not cut and dry like some people think.

Texas Counter Fitters is an importer and distributor of natural stone from around the globe, specializing in providing custom stone products to discerning designers, builders, and homeowners across Dallas-Fort Worth. I met my cofounder, Chris Blackburn, when we were working at the same stone company, and we joined forces in 2012. We source stone from dozens of countries around the globe, ranging from ancient sources in the Mediterranean regions of Italy and Spain to quarries across Brazil and South America. Once imported, TCF houses it in our expansive Richardson showroom.

If you had to describe your work in three words, what would they be?

1. Artistic. As curators of natural stone, we have the opportunity

to work with and shape beautiful products using artistic stone materials.

2. Quality. We work with global partners to source the highestquality stone for our clients. We ensure our craftsmen maintain this integrity in the finished design.

3. Natural. While we offer a variety of stones, our primary joy comes from natural stone.

What’s the measure of a successful project? Our goal with any project is making sure that we meet our clients’ standards and guidelines to the highest standard possible. Ultimately, we want our work to bring the client’s vision to life while providing them with a forever piece of art in their home or corporate dwelling.

What’s one thing people often don’t understand or realize about your line of work?

People might see stone in their home or a corporate office, but they don’t often think about how it got there and the work that was done to finalize the project. Like any work of art, it takes time, craftsmanship, and creativity. We are working to share more about this aspect of the industry with o ur audience. In 2021, we commissioned an independent filmmaker to capture how one piece of stone travels from a quarry in the Brazililan countryside to the c ountertop of a luxury home in Dallas. Just as with our stone, the process of finalizing the film has taken outstanding levels of creativity and craftsmanship, and I look forward to sharing the final films with our audience when they are complete.
