WELCOME TO DC SPORT

This edition of the DC Sports magazine is very special as it recognises the endeavours of the those who participate in the summer term sports, which unfortunately fail to get recognised in Shamal.

Although our Term Three ECA Sports programme is now packed with basketball, rounders, tape ball and water polo, leagues are never finished when Shamal goes to print and therefore these pages present the perfect opportunity to celebrate what is being achieved since our return from the spring break.

So, if you are one of our student athletes that has continued to play as the summer heat has continued to rise, we congratulate you on your efforts!

As we now embark on our long summer holiday, stay fit and stay active as we go again in September!

Enjoy the break.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Out of all the spectacular shots the U12 A have made, I seriously don’t know what we should start with. The game-winning shot against Al Barsha or the final few shots against DESC that guaranteed us a place on the podium, I don’t know which one I sincerely appreciate the most. Everyone came to the training sessions even though some were a little bit too early for us and I could not appreciate Kian enough for supporting us in the final game against DESC even though he was injured. Although we came third in our division, we have many years ahead where we could still come first and lift the cup. As long as we keep on working hard and make the right decisions in the game, I am a hundred percent sure that we will lift the cup up into the air next year.

Great Job to everyone in the A-Team and see you next year!

A Basketball

What an incredible season for the U12 B team. The B team worked incredibly hard this season. We started off at Jumeirah English College with an incredible result of 56-4 and after narrowly winning against SIS 28-25. With Taha and Kaspar up front and Zhizhong and Tarik at center we had a team who cared for each other on and off the court. This meant we were now in the semifinal against JESS. It was a very difficult game with many controversial moments, but in the end, JESS just narrowly pulled through winning 33-28.

Despite that, I am incredibly proud of this team, I thought we worked with grit and integrity and persevered through the seasons ups and downs. I would like to thank Mr Jones for his superb coaching, patience, and positivity during the season. I am sure we are sad to end the amazing season but looking forward to the next... we’ll be back!

BOYS BASKETBALL

We got a head start on our U13 basketball season, with pre-season training sessions during our P.E lessons and during lunchtimes and after school. During our training sessions, we mostly worked on basic drills and plays we would run on the court, on the sideline and on the baseline. Term 3 began, and so did the DASSA league. The A’s started their season with a bang, winning their first game, but unfortunately the B’s lost. Next game, it was down to the wire for the A’s, and we lost 34-32, but we didn’t let it get to our heads, as we knew we were the better team. And we bounced back, winning our next game 63-19! It was the final game of the league, and we needed to win this to qualify for the knockout, and we did, 35-28.

Onto the semi-finals of the knockout stage, we are up against GEMS Wellington Silicon Oasis, and we took a comfortable win, 35-18. We advanced to the finals, and it took place at Safa Community School. We were up against the JESS A team. It was a close game, with the score being in both teams favours throughout it, however near the end we took a comfortable 5 point lead and kept it until the end, winning 27-22.

BOYS BASKETBALL

What an incredible season for the U14 teams. We start off with theA team, who won all of their group games, going 4-0. During this time, we defeated teams like Jumeirah College and DIA. Therewere some fantasticperformances and some great teamwork on display. It was more difficult for the U14 B team but they managed to pick up many great results like wins against Kings School Al Barsha and Gems WorldAcademy

The A team managed to get through to the semifinals where we played Jess. It was a very close game, going end to end but finished with us just pulling through with a score of 30-27. This meant that we were now in the Final against DESC. It was a very difficult game, with many heated moments and controversial decisions. Unfortunately, DESC just pulled though at the end and we finished in 2nd place.

Despite that, I’m very proud of this team. We worked brilliantly all year and I’d like to mention Mr Riordan and Coach Milos who coached and helped us all throughout the season and made us the best versions of ourselves on the court. I’m g that gold.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

This season has just been phenomenal, with the energy from everyone ablaze. Both teams have significantly improved since the beginning of the season, and I am sure that everyone thinks the same. The whole team has developed a newfound trust and friendship in one another which I believe is one of the key things in any sport. The A and B team have both gone through their own ups and downs but have fought through every single one. With some improvements that could be made, the energy from both sides was immense.

Whether we have won or not, every single player has left the matches with a smile on their face and comes back to the next match with the same energy. With nail-biting matches and incredibly close losses, everyone has shown grit and determination on and off the court.

Next year, I am sure that our free-throws and decision-making skills will improve with time and practice, however our lay-ups and technique will just keep on getting better and better than it already is. At the outset, everyone was a stranger to each other, with no knowledge of how to cooperate with each other’s unique skills, but now every single person under the title ‘DC U12 Basketball Girls’ could not be closer.

On behalf of the team, I would like to thank Miss Hember for all her hard work and dedication to making this season happen, she deserves every single bit of gratitude from us. I am proud to be the captain of such an amazing and dedicated group of girls who have certainly outdone themselves. Next year, we will definitely end with a trophy in our hands.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

This U13 Basketball season has been an eventful one and we emerged as winners, while not first but third in DASSA, our team has learned so much about the flow of the game and have begun to show interest and passion into the sport. We lost 2 matches and won 5 learning lessons from each match and moving forward from victory and loss. This season has been a drastic improvement in numbers and overall outcome; therefore, I am extremely proud of this team and how well we have worked together.

In practice, we implemented a variety of drills to tackle each meticulous skill of basketball. To improve contested shooting, we did various forms of one on one to imitate the pressure of the game and contact lay ups to adjust the team to the aggression of the game. Similar to the U14, we used the rainbow drill for all ranges of shooting and three-man weave to two on one to increase the intensity of our game. In the future, to build further upon this foundation, we hope to improve our ball handling and confidence with dribbling to become stronger as well as more consistent shooting.

We have had lots of support from peers but most importantly from our coach Miss Hember who put it all together and kept patient with our team (even when we had questionable shooting) ensuring that we remained confident and kept moving forward, so a massive thanks to Miss Hember and all the coaches who make up our team.

I am so proud and happy to see commit levels and hopefully new opportunities wil game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

So, what’s new? Our U14 Basketball team has been doing amazingly! We are the DASSA league champions! Recently beating DESC in an intense final, 39-18. We initially began in league pool 2, we beat everyone in our pool and then went through to the quarter finals against NAS, we then played JESS in the semi-finals beating by 10 points before reaching DESC in the final.

Our team has secured layups, jump shots in the key, rainbows and basic dribbling techniques, and has begun to work on two ball dribbling and shots from further out We have also been regularly shooting free throws, as they can win or lose a game, and our consistency has clearly improved when we put the techniques in practice in our games. The rainbow drill and the figure of 8 drill as well as 3-man weave back into a 2 on 1 are all excellent drills for practicing in more intense, game like conditions, as they allow us to cheer and pressure each other to score, and reach an aim of 20 baskets, 10 baskets, etc

Moreover, having been coached by amazing trainers: Miss Hember and Coach Milos from Dubai Basketball Club, we can start to see major improvement in the confidence of the players on the court. Everyone, from the strongest player to the beginner, has taken the ball to the basket aggressively, has made passes with 100% accuracy, and has taken shots without fear of missing. I, as captain, think this is what makes the best team. The team that has the most potential to win the leagues, and I am excited to see what we will be able to do next year.

An opportunity which has become available to us next year is an incredible 5-day trip to Spain, Valencia, where we will learn to put our practice into against different teams and players. I am confident that DC and the incredible sports coaches and facilities will create more and more challenging opportunities for us to improve. I look forward to next season!

NETBALL

After the multiple successes of Term 1 and 2, Term 3 has seen no let up for the netballers with many girls still involved in training programmes.

Firstly our UAE Open representatives enjoyed a phenomenal five day European Challenge Cup Championships in Cardiff, Wales beating arch rivals Ireland in the final to take the title. Five DC players represented the winning UAE side; Kate Lewis, Sophie Siffre, Alana Farrell Morton, Alex Craig and Charlie Preston who was named Player of the Tournament, massive congratulations to them all for securing the Gold Medal as well as Head Coach Deb Jones, Deputy Head at DC.

UAE U17 trials also took place this term with no less than 8 DC representatives making it into the Long Squad for next year's European Championships: Chloe Andrews, Olivia Ashcroft, Molly Fuller, Jess Harris, Mya Khushid, Hana Latif, Maria Michailidou, Alejandra Ruiz, congratulations to them all and best of luck.

The DC Senior Sports Awards evening celebrated all the successes of the year and we were delighted to see our netballers achieving Full and Half Colours galore with a special mention to Kate Lewis and Sophie Siffre receiving the inaugural Honours Award, two of only three presented this year, epitomising the absolute elite award for our best ever DC sporting students. Netball's Most Improved Award was deservedly won by Alex Craig and Player of the Year by Charlie Preston.

NETBALL

Term 3 has also see our World School Games squads and Australia Tour squads in training. Preparation for both events has gone really well with regular competition against the best in Dubai coupled with in house early mornings, lunchtimes and after school practices. Thank you to Allstars for the regular Thursday night competition. We are taking two teams to the World School Games, our U13's and also our U14's who are playing in the U15 section - both sets of players are extremely excited to challenge the UK schools and to experience an international tournament. World School Games are based at Loughborough University, UK, arguably one of the best sporting universities in the world and the girls are looking forward to being in an elite sporting environment for the five days of the competition (21st-26th June). Our Australia tour takes in Sydney, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast over 17 days, playing 7 competitive fixtures as well as specialist training with some of Australia's best. The girls are also looking forward to the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, learning to surf, visiting Taronga and Australia Zoo, Oz Jet Boating as well as seeing the sights of Sydney and Brisbane - an awesome jam packed sporting tour! The WSG and Australia Dress Presentation was a special occasion with parents and friends witnessing the celebration of accepting the DC dress and all that comes with it; the responsibility, the pride, the history. We are indebted to Proventeq, Huriya Private and Happy Travel for sponsoring DC Netball.

A final congratulations to each and every one of our 300+ DC netballers for an absolutely amazing year , ranging from U12 to U18, the netballing family we have created with players, parents, coaches, sponsors, supporters is very special and as DoN I am extremely grateful to everyone for supporting the DC Netball programme with such energy and enthusiasm. Enjoy the summer break when it arrives and see you at pre-season to begin the fun all over again! Hasta luego!

ROUNDERS

II am proud to say on behalf of the U13 rounders team that the season this year was extremely successful. With great communication and collaboration, we managed to be unbeaten. This season was filled with none other than hard work, laughs and great sportsmanship. We finished in the most ideal position, B team followed shortly behind A team. Throughout this season, these athletes have shown us what true dedication and teamwork can achieve. I still remember our first match, an amazing win against Emirates International School. Although we won by a lot, we still needed to fix our catching. That Tuesday, we worked on catching a high ball in the air for the whole session. The next game against GEMS Al Barsha National School and Paula caught an amazing catch exactly how we practiced! I still remember how she had the biggest grin on her face and Miss Kgasi looked so proud. These moments continued throughout the season: Izzy’s amazing catch, Riana’s consistent rounders. Our last match was against our U13B where our whole team just kept scoring rounders. Throughout the whole season I was never a strong batter, but that Tuesday Miss Kgasi taught me a new way of hitting the ball with my backhand. The following Monday for the match against U13B, I hit the ball really far and I was so happy and so was Miss Kgasi.

The golden bat winner for the most rounders scored this season is awarded to, Charlotte Thurston! Well done.

Thank you to Miss Kgasi, Miss Bland, and Miss Jones, for guiding us to an unforgettable season.

ROUNDERS

U15 Rounders was a very popular sport this year, almost 40 girls turned up for trials. The DC U15B Rounders Team had an incredible journey in the DASSA league, dominating right from the start and going on to win all our matches! We inspired each other during training, supported each other during our matches and all became amazing teammates.

Highlights of the season included winning our first match against our DC U15A team (10.5-9). It was very close after the first innings; however, our second innings was incredible. Millie got some amazing catches and Syona used her back hand to score many full rounders. Liv also bat extremely well gaining more convincing rounders. This result inspired us all, boosted our confidence and proved that nothing was impossible. Our second match against Repton Al Barsha started slowly, but with excellent bowling by Naduli and Niki, plus some amazing fielding by Sophie and Ale, we showed great resilience and won the game 12.5 –5.0 points.

Our final league match was against DIA, and we were so proud of the whole teams’ performance including Ashleigh’s incredible batting and Ada’s great accuracy with throwing the ball to fourth base. Another great win!

Congratulations to all our team on a very successful rounders season.

Finally, we would like to thank both Mrs Bland and Miss Jones, for always helping us to improve in all aspects of the game. We were constantly pushed to do our best, to work hard as a team and to have fun. Here’s to the 2023-2024 season!!

BOYS WATER POLO

U13's MAKE A SPLASH IN WATER POLO!

The U13 A team had a year to remember during the DASSA Water Polo season. Despite this being the first year for many in the pool, the squad achieved a strong performance across the six matches they played against other local schools. Highlights of the season included major wins against Safa Community School and JESS Arabian Ranches and close but respectable defeats against DESC and also versus JESS, where the team lost by a single goal. The stand-out match against JESS, saw the team overcome hurdles such as a shallow pool, and a very competitive opening, before DC pulled away to sink Ranches 9-2. While the season ended with 3 wins and 3 defeats, the total of 27 goals for and 15 against showed DC’s dominant performance in key fixtures. In every fixture, each of the 13-player squad, performed outstandingly and every player tried their hardest and represented DC with pride. The team will now be practicing in the pool during the summer to build on this success and prepare for what will be a hotly contested season for Under 15s.

BOYS WATER POLO

Wow, what a season! Almost a perfect one. It has been great to see our team improve, starting with the basics such as passing and shooting. The squad has rapidly expanded its knowledge of the rules and the game. Our first fixture was a close one, losing for the first two quarters, levelling in the third, and just snatching the win in the last quarter, making it 9-7 to DC. That was just the start, and as our confidence grew, we overcame almost all our opponents, with only one narrow defeat of 5-4. Two of our highlight performances were a 12-4 victory and an end-of-season final game 121 win. This was enough to win the league on points difference. Well done, boys! What a great season it has been. We hope next season is as fruitful as we become the U13 A team in Year 8.

BOYS WATER POLO

The U15 water polo season started with two very unlucky defeats however they would provide us, as a team having never played together before, with a great learning experience. As the season progressed, we became more familiar with each other and increased the intensity and consistency of our training. This resulted in a massive improvement in our performances and lead to us being unbeaten from that point onwards, showing what the team was capable of. We began to beat teams comprehensively playing a stylish and attractive brand of water polo, winning many games by double figures. Special mentions to the high scoring and skillful forwards; Victor; Lucas and Marco, and also to the strong defence lead by Sami and Chris. It turned out to be a great and enjoyable season, with the team finishing a very creditable 3rd place in the DASSA A Water Polo League.

GIRLS WATER POLO

This water polo season has been incredible. The A’s are unbeaten and drew on one occasion- a very impressive water polo season! Izzy is a beast in the goal, saving nearly all of the shots from our opposition. On the other hand, Talia, Oceane, Tara and Lilly always got the ball at the back of the net while Sanaya, Annabelle, Lana, Charlotte and Emily made a strong and secure defense for our team. Our season has tested our perseverance and strength.

We have worked incredibly as a team and have cared for each other inside and outside of the pool. We have built our teamwork and our humility for when we win our matches. We have made a lot of progress along the season to become a stronger team from what we started at. I am so proud of all the U13 water polo girls! We have improved so much from the beginning of the term and grown as a team. I know that we are all so sad to end the season but also happy that we ended it on a high. We are also really grateful to have Miss Paice as our coach. We can’t wait for next year and to have another successful season!

D C S P O R T | 1 7

This water polo season for the U13B’s, which consists of Year 7s, has been phenomenal. Although we have only played 3 matches this season, the whole team has improved immensely, going through all the obstacles that were thrown our way. We are very proud of all of the players, especially Emily and Mannat, for they have proven that they are dedicated towards the team and never fail to impress. A vast majority of the team have just learnt how to play this year, nevertheless, they have improved their ball handling skills and overall techniques, such as shooting skills. In and out of the pool, the team has developed a bond in both trust and friendship.

Another thing that we are enormously proud of is that some of the players in the team got to experience playing in both the A and B teams. At the start of the season, there were not a lot of year 7’s who attended the training sessions, however, thanks to Miss Paice’s efforts, the number of girls increased. This team has had its highs and lows, but we have gone and came back from each match with smiles on our faces. On behalf of the team, we would like to say thank you to Miss Paice, who helped us through this season, for attending every match and early morning practices;. we truly believe Miss Paice is the most valuable asset to the team. Next year we hope to finish the season even stronger with a trophy in our hands.

GIRLS WATER POLO

The U15 girls water polo team has had an outstanding season, claiming victory of the league. First match against DESC was an impressive 8-4 score line. Alejandra Ruiz was the star of the show, securing a stunning hattrick that left the opposition reeling.

While the news of the season's limited matches is disappointing, the team remains optimistic about the experiences that lie ahead. Our final match was a nail biter against JESS which led us to an 8-4 victory securing a win and league winners. Having a blend of talented Year 9 and 10 girls, swimmers, and even some who may hate swimming, the team will work tirelessly to develop our skills and achieve success. Many of us players are in our second year of playing water polo, and we are all eager to build on the successes from last year and be even more successful this season.

As our season comes to an end, we need to say a massive thank you to the coaches, Ms. Paice and Coach Christos, they have already played a critical role in the team's first success and hopefully will help us with them all.

All in all, it has been an excellent season, and the team is excited to see what the future holds.

Why are ACL injuries so common in sport?

Sports are a great way to keep oneself physically active and mentally fit. However, with the thrill and excitement of sports come the risks of injuries. One of the most common and devastating injuries that athletes face is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. This injury can result in long-term disability and the end of an athlete's career. In this article, we will explore why ACL injuries are so common in sports from a biological sports science perspective.

What is the ACL?

Firstly, let's understand what the ACL is and what it does. The ACL is a ligament that runs through the knee joint and helps stabilize the knee during physical activities such as running, jumping, and pivoting. When the knee is forced beyond its normal range of motion, the ACL can tear or rupture, causing pain, swelling, and instability in the knee.

THOUGHTS
SPORT D C S P O R T | 2 0
ON

Factors that cause an ACL injury:

The most common reason for ACL injuries in sports is the nature of the movements required in the particular sport Many sports require athletes to make sudden and quick changes in direction, jump and land, and stop and start abruptly (sportssuch as basketball and rugby). These movements put a lot of stresson the knee joint and can causethe ACL to tear or rupture.

Secondly, the anatomical structure of the knee joint can also contribute to ACL injuries The knee joint is made up of three bones - the femur, tibia, and patella - and several ligaments, including the ACL. The anatomy of the knee joint makes it vulnerable to twisting or hyperextension, which can result in ACL injuries.

Thirdly, biological factors can also increase the risk of ACL injuries

One of the most significant factors is gender.Studies have shown that femaleathletes are more likely to suffer from ACL injuries than male athletes. This is because female athletes have a higher Q-angle, which is theanglebetween the hip and knee. This angleputs more stresson the knee joint and can causethe ACL to tear or rupture.

Fourthly, muscle imbalances can also contribute to ACL injuries. Athletes who have weak hamstrings, quadriceps, or glutealmuscles are more likely to suffer from ACL injuries. These muscles help stabilize the knee joint and prevent it from moving in unnatural ways. When these muscles are weak, the knee jointis more vulnerable to injuries such as ACL tears.

Lastly, previous injuries can also increase the risk of ACL injuries. Athletes who have suffered from previous knee injuries, particularly those that involve the ACL, are more likely to suffer from a repeat injury. This is because the knee joint is already weakened from the previous injury, makingit more vulnerable to furtherdamage

In conclusion, ACL injuries are a common and devastating injurythat many athletesface. The nature of the movements required in sports, the anatomical structure of the knee joint, biological factors such as gender, muscle imbalances, and previous injuries can all contribute to the risk of ACL injuries It is essential for athletes, coaches, and trainers to take preventative measures to reduce the risk of ACL injuries. This includes proper warm-up and stretching techniques, strengthening exercises for the muscles around the knee joint, and using properequipment such as knee braces. By understanding the biological factors that contribute to ACL injuries, we can take steps to prevent them and keep athletes healthyand in the game.
