DEAR EXCHANGE STUDENT,
Whether you study abroad in the USA, picuresque France or beautiful Italy, your exchange will be a transformative experience. You’ll Learn for Life and you’ll learn so much – a different culture, possibly a new language, a unique view of the world. You’ll make lasting connections with your host family and new friends. You’ll return home with greater confidence, a global perspective and plenty of valuable skills that will set you up for personal, academic and career success.
To ensure this once-in-a-lifetime experience fulfills your needs and goals, it’s important to choose the right exchange organisation. We offer many advantages that set us apart in international education:
• High school exchange is all we do. Southern Cross Cultural Exchange is part of the Educatius Group, the largest organisation in the world focused on just two things: high school exchanges and you. This unique, targeted focus has allowed us to build industry-leading expertise in high school exchange programs.
• One Team Across the Globe working just for you. The best parts of a high school exchange – like the independence and exposure to new things – can also be challenging at times. As a Southern Cross Cultrual Exchange student
you’ll be supported in every stage by our One Team Across the Globe, at home and while you’re away.
• Personal and dedicated service. Our team will take the time to explain our extensive portfolio of destination countries and program types, and help you choose the best fit for you. Our team is always here for you both at home and in your host country.
• The best preparation. We set our students up for success right from the start, with our pre-departure orientation, our arrival orientation and often also an optional Soft Landing Camp in the host country (additional cost).
• A positive difference in the world. When you go on exchange with Southern Cross Cultrual Exchange, you become part of an organisation committed to doing good in the world, whether that means sponsoring children’s education in the Gambia to planting trees to offset carbon from our flights.
These are just some of the reasons why 95% of our alumni and parents have said they would recommend Southern Cross Cultrual Exchange to other students looking to go on a high school exchange. We hope to enjoy the privilege of sending you on your high school exchange, but above all we wish you the best for the exciting journey ahead of you. Get ready to Learn for Life. It will truly change your future.
What is
Advantages of going on Exchange
WHAT IS AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM?
Going on an exchange program means going to high school abroad. You will live with a host family and be enrolled in the local school – just like the other teenagers in your host country – and in many cases you can choose subjects that match your personal and academic interests, or sign up for extra-curricular activities such as sports, art or dance.
WHY GO ON AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM?
We know from our own personal experiences and from our students’ stories that an exchange program is a transformative experience that sets you up for success in your future.
When you go an exchange you:
• Gain new skills in ways you can’t do at home. As an exchange student you can grasp a new language, culture and way of life more deeply and quickly because you are immersed in new knowledge every day.
• Become more resourceful and confident. Going on exchange teaches you to be independent and skilled at navigating your way in your new home and community. You’ll become more confident, knowing you can face everyday challenges even when you are miles away from home.
• Advance your academic and career goals. By the end of your exchange program, you might have mastered a new language, have stronger problem-solving and communication skills, and bring cultural awareness and
a global perspective to everything you do. These are skills and traits that will make you more competitive in your studies and career.
• Build a lifelong global network. Many of our exchange students form lasting relationships with their host families, classmates and friends from abroad. As a Southern Cross Cultural Exchange alumnus you’ll also become part of our community of current and former exchange students from around the world.
• Get opportunities for more travel and exploration. In our wide range of destinations, you’ll find areas with vibrant communities, sunny beaches, beautiful nature, great food and fascinating history. Many of our exchange students enjoy weekends exploring their host community and surrounding areas with their host family and friends.
• Learn another language. Research has shown there’s no better way to gain fluency in a language – as well as a culture – than by immersing yourself in a country where it’s spoken.
THE BEST TIME OF YOUR LIFE
An exchange with Southern Cross Cultural Exchange is an experience you’ll never forget. You’ll learn so much, grow as a person and come back armed with so many personal, academic and career advantages.
Preparation and support: The Southern cross difference
Let’s go on exchange together
The success of your high school exchange depends on two key factors: you and your high school exchange organisation. Together, we can achieve great things. Southern Cross Cultural Exchange stands apart from the rest with our thorough preparation process and robust support system that’s there for you before, during and after your exchange.
Your expert guide to the program that’s right for you
We know going on an exchange is a big step and choosing the right program can be nerve-racking. To guide you through these important decisions, we’ll schedule an online meeting with you, your legal guardian and one of our high school exchange experts. During this meeting we’ll discuss your personal and academic goals, and other important matters such as your preferred destinations and budget. Our guidance doesn’t stop there. Once you’ve decided to go on a Southern Cross Cultural Exchange program, our team will support and help you and your parents throughout the application process – including your application for a visa, if you need one – and for the duration of your exchange.
Be fully prepared for a successful exchange
We know from the thousands of students we’ve sent on exchange that the better prepared you are, the more successful your exchange will be. That’s why we offer sessions and programs to help you get ready for your oncein-a-lifetime experience.
• Pre-departure orientation. Hosted in your home country and mandatory for you and at least one legal guardian, this information session will explain program rules and provide further guidance on many common situations during an exchange, such as homesickness.
• Arrival orientation. The local support person in your host country will give you guidance and information around living in a host family, going to school in your host country, how to deal with homesickness and many other areas of interest so that you can make the most out of your exchange.
• Soft Landing Camp. These camps are an optional extra (at an additional cost) for many of our exchange programs and give our students an opportunity to meet and spend a few days together in a central location before travelling to their host destination.
Life in a host family
Where you live is just as important as what you study on your exchange program. Your host family will open their home to you and give you a true insight into your new culture. Many of our former exchange students are still in close touch with their host families – even years after the exchange has ended!
Become a part of the host country
Staying with a host family is truly a wonderful way to become a part of the culture in your new country. You will try local dishes, possibly speak a new language every day and join celebrations that are characteristic for the culture. You will have someone looking after you and supporting you miles away from home.
Carefully selected host families
We put a lot of effort into finding the very best host families for our students. Host families that are engaged, friendly and safe. All our families go through a thorough application procedure, where our colleagues abroad make a home visit, get references and government-required checks and interview all family members.
“I now have another family in Germany that are always there for me and I am always there for them. I love them so much and miss them already so much! But I know we’ll stay in contact and see each other again soon.“
– Sonia in Germany“My host family were amazing and everyday we always found something to laugh and smile at. But for me, I just miss sitting down with my host family at dinner and talking about my day and just spending time with them.“

“My last day of school was a day of so many mixed emotions: happy to be heading home but ultimately very sad to be saying goodbye after so many amazing memories. I’ve since realised that saying goodbye isn’t really ‘goodbye’, but just a ‘see you soon’, as I will definitely be back and so many of my friends want to come to visit me. This experience has taught me that no matter how different we are, we can always find common ground. “My favourite thing about the exchange would probably have to be having the opportunity to immerse myself in the culture and daily life of France! I was placed in an incredible host family on the outskirts of Paris. I had a fantastic bunch of friends at school, with whom I played soccer with every day at lunch. Living so close to Paris, on the weekends I would catch the train into Paris and explore, sometimes with my host family and sometimes alone.”

Everyone wants to know you, they will always ask you questions and you’re never alone. You make so many friends and it’s such an amazing experience. Aiducatius| New opportunities come through education
With education, children in vulnerable situations can acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to seek professional development and employment. Through education, children receive the tools necessary to influence their own lives and create a successful future for themselves and their families.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Anna-Karin Ericsson founded Aiducatius in 2009. As the founders of the international student exchange company Educatius Group, both Tom and Anna-Karin have intimate knowledge of the value of education and the need for access to schooling in developing countries.
Located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, The Gabriella Centre has since 2009 worked with rehabilitation services for children with autism and cognitive learning disability and other neurodevelopment disorders. Its mission is to help their students become independent and productive members of their families and the community.
By sponsoring the cost of special education teachers, Aiducatius contributes to allowing more unique children, youth, and their families from all over Tanzania to benefit from the Gabriella Rehabilitation Centres’ services.
Tree Planting and conservation projects
Projects in the Gambia
The Constitution of The Gambia states that basic education is a right, and should be free, compulsory, and available to all. However, there is a mandatory cost involved when sending children to school. Aiducatius sponsors students at St. Martin Basic Cycle school with books and study materials, textiles for school uniforms, school bags, shoes, and exam fees.
Projects in Tanzania
In 2014, the Government of Tanzania introduced a fee-free education policy, making primary education free, however, this policy does not cover education for children and youth with special needs.
The environment is changing, and we all have a responsibility to do what we can. To compensate for the travels Educatius Group students and staff embark on every year, AiDucatius supports tree planting and conservation in the Biharamulo district in Tanzania. AiDucatius are involved in several projects; recovery of natural forests, restoration of water sources, and planted forest management.
In the fall of 2022, Aiducatius will start the sponsorship of fruit tree planting in school as well as give students fruit tree seedlings to plant at home.
“We believe education is for everyone”.
– Tom Ericsson
FAQWho can apply / travel?
To go on exchange with us, you need to be between 15 and 17 years old (sometimes exceptions can be made for 14 or 18 year olds, please call our office if you’d like to explore this option), be in high school and attend school full time before your departure. You also need to have an average C gradel, be in good health and be motivated for a high school exchange abroad.
How early should I apply?
We accept students all year round but always encourage you to apply early. This gives us both more time: for you to prepare for your exchange and for us to match you with the exchange that best meets your personal and academic goals.
What does a regular host family look like?
Host families come in all shapes and sizes and from a variety of backgrounds. What all families have in common is a genuine interest in welcoming you into their home and showing you everyday life in your new country.
Why do families host exchange students?
Many of the reasons are similar to why students go on exchange. Host families have a desire to get to know a new culture and broaden their horizons. Some have kids who are or have been on exchange in other countries. Many are experienced host families that find it rewarding to welcome an exchange student into their home, and want to do it again and again.
How do you match students to host families?
Our staff do their best to match our exchange students and host families based on their profiles and applications. In the end, it’s the family that decides whether or not they’d like to host a particular student. Host families often make this decision based on a student’s interests and on information included in the student’s application. It’s important to be honest and give an accurate description of yourself and of your expectations for the exchange.
Are host families paid?
It depends on the program and country. In Great Britain, Ireland, Spain and, in some cases in Japan, the host families are paid. The reason that host families are paid in these countries are tradition and economics. Host families for our Select High School program also get a stipend to cover additional costs like food and gasoline. Because the Select program lets you choose a specific school, we want to make sure we find a good host family near your chosen school. Offering payment to a prospective host family helps us do that.
Regardless of whether or not they’re getting paid, all host families go through the same stringent application and screening procedure.
How does Southern Cross Cultural Exchange decide if a family is suitable for hosting an exchange student?
All our families go through a thorough application procedure, where our team members abroad:
• make a home visit
• check references
• obtain government-required checks
• interview all family members to find out if they meet our standards
Do I have to share a room?
You will always have your own bed, but there are some situations where you could share a room (in these cases, you will always share room with a person of the same gender):
• In some families, you might share a room with the host family’s son/daughter.
• In some families you could share a room with another exchange student. This student won’t be from your home country and will speak another language.
• Some countries offer a single room guarantee at an additional cost (please contact our office for more details)
Can I live with a friend?
We don’t allow friends to stay with the same host family because we feel this this will hinder you from immersing fully in the family’s daily life, culture and language. If you choose the Select program, you and your friend can go to the same school but will still live with different host families.
What if I’m not happy with my placement?
We have a lot of experience when it comes to making good matches between students and host families. We are also ready and flexible if you aren’t happy with your placement. We will always try to solve the issue first, but if there is no way around it, we will look for another family for you.
Can I have visits during the year?
Family visits are discouraged, however if your family does want to visit, we recommend they only visit towards the end of your program. Before that time, you’ll be busy with school, activities and new friends. Visits should be planned for, and you need to get permission from your host family and their local area representative. Talk to us about family visits so we can recommend a plan that complies with your program’s rules and recommendations.
Can I travel during my exchange?
There may be opportunities for travel organised through your local support person or your school. These would be arranged while you are on the program and for an additional fee. The most important thing when it comes to travels in your host country is safety. An unsupervised trip is not an option during your exchange. All trips will need to take place with adults, and you must inform your parents, your host family and the appropriate contact person from your exchange organisation.
Can I go on exchange even if I have pre-existing conditions? This depends on many factors. Whether you have allergies, special dietary needs or other pre-existing conditions, we will do our best to find the perfect exchange for you.
Can I continue the sport I’m playing in my home country? On our Select Program, you can choose a school that has your favourite sport. Many of them even have programs for sports on a professional level! You will also have the option for sports on our Classic Programs, but we cannot guarantee that you’ll get a spot in the team. Talk to us – we’ll help you to find the best solution.
