CAREER READY LOGISTICS ACADEMY Are you aware of the career opportunities that exist in the logistics industry? At Stockton Riverside College through our Career Ready Logistics Academy we work directly with employers to help raise awareness of this industry that is all around us yet often goes overlooked. Dealing with the planning, transport and storage of everything you see around you today, logistics is an essential part of all of our everyday lives.

Emily, Career Re ady Graduate no w employed at PD Ports I got to learn about the working environment at PD Ports and how everyone works together in a close knit team in the engineering department. I enjoyed being involved and seeing many of the projects taking place at PD Ports at the time, and engaging with a variety of different people.

Working with Career Ready and industry leaders, our dedicated programme offers students the chance to learn more about the industry by taking part in master classes and site visits alongside their full-time course. Those taking part in the programme also get the chance to work with a mentor and carry out a placement or internship. By raising students’ awareness, the programme aims to encourage students to recognise the industry as a viable career option. And we are national award winners too! Our Career Ready Logistics Academy Coordinator, Ruth Cabourne, was named the Santander Employability Champion at the Career Ready 2019 Awards.

A GREAT PLACE TO LEARN Stockton Riverside College has been created with your success in mind. Come and see for yourself at our dedicated open events or give us a call to book a tour. Things to look out for…

APTA

UFILMS

Here at Stockton Riverside College, we’ve always had a hugely successful Performing and Creative Arts department and last year, we launched a new Academy of Performing and Technical Arts (APTA). In the UK, the creative industries are worth more than £130 billion to the UK economy and covers 9.6% of UK jobs. Closer to home, the arts are a pretty big deal too. In the Tees Valley alone, it’s predicted that there will be 14,000 creative jobs by 2024 and whilst things were put on hold due to COVID-19, make no mistake, this area will bounce back with a vengeance. Recently, the Government has pledged £1.5 billion to protect the UK creative sector – we really are a world-class super power when it comes to the arts. APTA was launched to ensure that talented young people like you are well equipped to be part of this vibrant sector whether it’s in fashion, graphic design, TV and film or games design; an APTA course will provide you with the best possible start to your creative career and enable you to go out and be at the cutting edge of this sector.

Did you know that our Creative Media Industries students run their own filming and production company? UFilms started a couple of years back and every year, the baton gets handed down to the next lot of students meaning you’ll get to work for an established production company on both internal and external projects. To watch some of UFilms fantastic work, visit their YouTube channel www.youtube.com/channel/ UCw-Ly11oIkcyp-7QG6g7SmA or go to page 50.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Curtis Bricklaying

If you feel ready to start work then an apprenticeship could be the right move for you. You will learn on the job, gain a qualification and earn a wage. Sound good? We work with employers from a wide variety of industries with apprenticeship vacancies, so we can help you find the right opportunity.

WHAT WILL I DO? We will match you with local employers who are looking for an apprentice, guiding you through the application process. Once successful you will start work, learning the skills of the job as you go. On some apprenticeships you will spend one day a week at College. Apprenticeships last between one and four years.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU? If you are looking to start work straight away and prefer to learn in the working environment, then this could be the route for you. This is your opportunity to impress, so you will need to work hard, show dedication, determination and enthusiasm.

YOU NEED: Entry requirements vary depending on the apprenticeship but all require that: • You are 16 or over • You live in England and are not taking part in full-time education • You may need to come into College one day a week if your apprenticeship is in a trade such as construction, hair or beauty

ENGLISH AND MATHS You will study functional skills in English and maths if you haven’t already achieved grade 9-4/A*-C at GCSE level. The grades you need vary depending on what level of apprenticeship you are studying. In some cases you will study ICT as part of your apprenticeship framework.

FYI: The way apprenticeships work has changed and they now include an end point assessment. This assessment may include a professional discussion with an external assessor, an apprenticeship showcase (a bit like a portfolio), an observation in your workplace or a practical demonstration. Your assessor will let you know which applies to you.
