the Alentejo O ur v isit to He r dade da M alhadinha Nova
The Algarve’s only regional neighbour is the Alentejo, which sits to the north of the coastal region. With one of the lowest population densities in Europe and beautiful varied landscapes, the region is becoming increasingly known for great wines and as a source of fine food products, as well as preserving age-old traditions and customs. We had planned for some years now to visit the region, and finally at the end of a recent stay at Fairways, full of anticipation, we took the easy drive of less than 90 minutes to Malhadinha to discover more. It’s a beautiful February morning in the Alentejo. We are breakfasting on the Home of Terracotta terrace overlooking the Malhadinha estate. Through the sun on our faces and the slightly misty light, we see trees with their shadows scattered across the gently rolling hills for miles around. We are at peace and all is very calm. The nearby infinity pool, dappled by a light wind, is approached across beautiful clay tiles that have been painstakingly created by a local artisan craftsman.
