High tech, green, and respecting archaeology: it’s the new arena floor for the Colosseum

t’s probably the most famous monument in the world: the Colosseum, the big oval amphitheater in the center of Rome that in Roman times could hold an audience of 87,000 people for gladiator games. Of course, no games are held there anymore, and the arena floor is long gone. But it will soon be back and available to host shows and events. A new renovation project for the Colosseum has recently been awarded to Italian company Milan Ingegneria to create and install a new arena floor. The architects pulled out all the stops and won with a proposal that joins cutting-edge technology, environmental awareness and respect for archaeology; the 18.5-million-euro project is expected to be completed by 2023. “In 2023, we will have the splendor of the Colosseum with its arena again,” commented the Italian Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini. At present, visitors can see the tunnels below the floor level, where gladiators and animals went through before the games (and after, if they survived). The new project will install a completely retractable stage, so the view of the tunnels will still be possible, but it will also be possible to walk on the floor of the arena, experiencing the Colosseum from the point of view of the gladiators themselves. QUANTO SEI BELLA, ROMA! È probabilmente il monumento più famoso del mondo: il Colosseo, il grande anfiteatro ovale al centro di Roma che in epoca romana poteva ospitare fino a 87 mila spettatori per i giochi gladiatori. Naturalmente al giorno d’oggi non ci sono più giochi e anche il pavimento calpestabile dell’arena non c’è più da tanto tempo. Però presto la pavimentazione ci sarà di nuovo e l’Anfiteatro Flavio potrà di nuovo accogliere spettacoli ed eventi. Il nuovo progetto di rinnovamento del Colosseo è stato recentemente aggiudicato allo studio veneto-milanese Milan Ingegneria, che dovrà creare e installare una nuova pavimentazione per l’arena. Gli architetti hanno dato tutto il possibile e hanno vinto con un progetto che unisce tecnologia innovativa, attenzione all’ambiente e rispetto dell’archeologia; il progetto, da 18,5 milioni di Euro, dovrebbe essere completato entro il 2023. “Nel 2023 potremo vedere lo splendore del Colosseo di nuovo con la sua arena,” ha commentato il Ministro della Cultura Dario Franceschini. Attualmente i visitatori possono vedere le gallerie al di sotto del piano di calpestio, quelle in cui animali e gladiatori passavano prima dei giochi (e dopo, se sopravvivevano).
