OVER WYRE ART SOCIETY Yes, we made it back! We welcomed several new faces along with many previous members for freestyle painting for our first group meeting early June. A figure painting week followed when we all took turns to pose in various costumes. We only had ten minutes to sketch for each one so this needed quick assessment and observation. Next was watercolour tuition guided by two of our members, Sylvia and Glenda who were very helpful. We concentrated on stormy skies, creating clouds and varying the colours used. This was in preparation for a seascape to be completed the following week. Paintings were submitted for a small competition in memory of a local artist ‘Woody’ who gave us lots of advice in recent years. The winners will be announced next month.

Fingers crossed we can continue our classes throughout July, so here is the programme for anyone who would like to join us. •

Wed 7th July ‘Something Different’ check for details

Wed 14th July ‘Tuscany Scene’ Acrylic Work Along with Jonathon Leigh (bring materials)

Wed 21st July Painting out of doors at Knott End

Wed 28th July ‘Paint What You Hear’ with Clare (bring materials)

We meet at St Oswald’s Church Hall on Lancaster Road Preesall from 2:00pm 4:00pm on Wednesdays. We are a friendly group who encourage each other and also try to improve with outside tuition. Please contact me if you are interested in joining us so you can have a trial week. Sandra Langhorne (01253) 813739

OVER WYRE PROBUS CLUB

OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB

Membership of the Over Wyre Probus club is open to all gentlemen, resident in or adjacent to the Over Wyre district who have fully or partially retired or are about to retire from professional, business or other similar occupations.

As I write this on Mon 14th June it looks very likely that the current Covid restrictions will be extended for another four weeks. However we will continue with plans for a mini Flower Show on Wed 18th Aug and hope that we will be able to confirm this in the next magazine.

Meetings are normally held on the first and third Thursday in each month at The Shovels Inn at Hambleton.

The committee have agreed that we will have just four categories for exhibits: fruit, vegetables, cut mixed flowers and the plants grown from the Rudbeckia seeds. In regard to the Rudbeckias, each member can exhibit one plant in a plain plastic pot, preferably grey or terracotta

We meet at 10:00am for coffee and a social chat followed by a talk on a range of varied and interesting subjects. It is intended to restart meetings on Thurs 5th Aug when talks will be given by club members. If anyone is interested in finding our more about The Over Wyre Probus Club or would like to attend a meeting, initially as a guest, then please get in touch. Stewart Lyell (01253) 810778

If we are able to meet in August we hope that as many members as possible will be able to attend as we do have to discuss some issues in regard to the gardening club for 2022. Due to changes in personal circumstances several members of the committee have decided to step down leaving vacancies which need to be filled before the start of the new season.

On Sun 1st Aug Mrs Linda Kidd, a member of the National Garden Scheme, is having an open garden from 10:00am - 5.00pm at Kington Cottage, Treales, PR4 3SD. Admission is £3.50 with refreshments from £2.50. There will be a raffle and tombola. Please come along to see this fantastic garden. Proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK. Donations of cakes greatly appreciated.

We were all looking forward to being able to meet up again in July and the committee had been working hard to make sure our first postCovid meeting would really be an evening to remember. However, the government has delayed the relaxation of Covid measures by a further four weeks. This means the earliest we could now meet up is Wed 4th Aug and that is if we are lucky and there are no more delays. Nevertheless, we will work towards reopening in August and keep our fingers crossed that this time it will go ahead. As always, if you need anything or just want a chat, please ring up. OVER WYRE MEDICAL CENTRE Premenstrual Syndrome A number of women recently have presented to the surgery with cyclical symptoms suggestive of premenstrual syndrome (PMT). Women experiencing this will describe a range of physical and psychological symptoms between ovulation and commencement of their period. This is known as the luteal phase of the cycle. Symptoms can include irritability, depression, anxiety, abdominal bloating and breast tenderness. This phenomenon is incredibly common. In fact, four out of 10 women will experience this. Severe symptoms however, which significantly impact women’s daily lives, are seen in 3-5% of affected women. There are a number of ways in which help

OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) can be offered. Do not suffer in silence. The first initial step is to get the diagnosis right. I would urge any woman who believes they are struggling with hormonal variations to keep a contemporaneous diary over two menstrual cycles. A diary can be found at www.pms. org.uk (go to the tab ‘Support’ and download the menstrual diary from there). By keeping a daily log of symptom patterns, the patient and clinician are able to see whether the symptoms are hormonal driven, or whether alternative diagnoses should be considered. Following a diagnosis, it is obviously important to think about how to manage the symptoms. There are a number of complementary treatments that can be trialled although evidence for these is mixed. Increasing exercise if appropriate, introducing vitamin B6 10mg as a daily supplement and use of St. John’s Wort, if safe to do so, are some strategies that might be helpful to women especially if other prescribed medications aren’t suitable or not favoured. Prescribed medications are available from the doctor. Anti depressant medications are often used, either continuously or in the second half of the cycle (luteal phase). These can be particularly helpful for the psychological effects of the rise in progesterone hormone that is seen before a period. Alternatively, hormonal supplements such as some contraceptive pills can be prescribed to stabilise the hormones and alleviate symptoms. A hormonal coil can also be used with supplemental oestrogen therapy to stabilise the hormonal fluctuations. If these approaches within the primary care setting do not work, there is the option of referral to gynaecology to explore more specialist hormonal regimes or surgical management. OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) Centre staff working alongside our wonderful team of volunteer marshals who have been real vaccine heroes. This month we would like to highlight some of those heroes: All our volunteer marshals have been truly inspirational, but we have a core group of volunteers who have been ever present at Over Wyre Medical Centre throughout the Covid-19 Vaccination programme. Our group of local volunteers have been amazing and without their help we could not have run the successful vaccine programme we have. We have a retired police officer, an exvicar and a retired director of nursing to name but a few. They have given up their time throughout the pandemic, sometimes coming in at very short notice to help run and guide our patients through extremely busy clinics. Each one of our volunteers always goes above and beyond in anything we ask of them. Our volunteers are really helping

us ‘make a difference’ in getting through the global pandemic and for that we would like to thank each one of them. Pauline, Maureen, Tracy, Dyllis & Marc – you are simply the best. Dr Vicky Simpson t: (01253) 951165 fb: @overwyremc www.overwyremc.co.uk

PREESALL FIRE STATION Crew Manager, Sarah Holden This month we will introduce crew manager Sarah Holden who started as an on-call firefighter four years ago. ‘My name is Sarah Holden. I applied to be oncall as I got to the point in my life where my children were getting older and I had more time on my hands. ‘I like to run, so the fitness tests were quite easy. The two-week recruit course was hard and intense, but I felt like I emerged from it a stronger person. I fell in love with the role straight away. The support the fire service provides for the community is unbelievable. After being in the role just six months I applied to be a full-time firefighter. I was successful and got posted to Lancaster Fire and Ambulance Station for three years. ‘I am now a crew manager and support training, development and recruitment in the Wyre and Fylde area. So, if anyone is interested in the role, please talk to me!’ Incidents Recently the crew have attended incidents caused by mental health, assisted North West Ambulance service to gain entry, RTC’s and some cooking incidents. Be Water Aware It looks like we are in for another scorcher of a month. We really want you to enjoy the hot weather, but please be careful when near the beach as the tide can come in very fast and never leave children unattended or take your eyes of them whilst on the beach. Remember, it is colder than it looks and the current is strong. Never swim alone so someone is there to help you if you need it. Do not go too far from the shore. Find a life guarded #BeWaterAware

School Communities in Over Wyre It’s been a busy month and it was a privilege to be able to pay tribute to local teachers, support staff, parents and pupils at schools across Fleetwood and Lancaster when I took part in an important debate in Parliament about children and young people. In particular I highlighted the fabulous things some of the school communities in Over Wyre have been doing. At Carter’s Charity on Pilling Lane in Preesall, the children and staff have created an allotment at the front of the school where children have planted and grown all sorts of fruit and veg. They are now selling their produce to make money to buy more seeds. At Fleetwood’s Charity, Preesall’s ‘School on the Hill’, families have bought and planted fruit trees to create a beautiful orchard which will be enjoyed by generations to come. Congratulations to all involved.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) Children & Young People The debate I was taking part in focussed on a health crisis that is making many young people’s lives intolerable. Recent data from NHS Digital suggests that one in six young people has a probable mental health disorder which can have far reaching impacts on young people’s educational outcomes, their future earnings and their relationships. According to the charity, YoungMinds half of all mental health problems manifest by the age of 14 and 75 percent by the age of 24. Nearly half of 17-19 year olds with a diagnosable mental health disorder has selfharmed or attempted suicide at some point, rising to 52.7 percent for young women. And yet less than one in three children and young people with a diagnosable mental health condition get access to NHS care and treatment. In a YoungMinds survey, three-quarters of

parents said that their child’s mental health had deteriorated while waiting for support from child and adolescent mental health services. In total, less than one percent of the total NHS budget is spent on children and young people’s mental health services. The number of A&E attendances by young people aged 18 or under with a recorded diagnosis of a psychiatric condition has almost tripled since 2010 and the impact of Covid on children and young people has been profound. Labour’s ‘Children’s Recovery Plan’ includes funding for schools to deliver new extracurricular clubs and activities to boost wellbeing, targeted support for children who have missed out most and an extension to free school meals to eligible pupils this summer. Our proposal would be to deliver small group tutoring for all who need it, not just the one percent currently being supported. We would

We’d ensure the continued development for teachers by supporting them with training to stay on top of the latest knowledge and techniques so that we can give every child a brilliant classroom experience. We’d also offer an education recovery premium, supporting every child to reach their potential by investing in children who have faced the greatest disruption during the pandemic from early years to further education and we’d double the pupil premium for children in key transition years, delivering additional support for children who need it most. Finally, and most importantly, we’d ensure no child goes hungry.

Several charities have joined together to call for a systematic approach to supporting young people’s mental health, to ensure that young people get the support when they need it and before they reach crisis point. I hope the government listens and acts on their request for a network of hubs across the country, where young people would be able to go without an appointment or referral and get advice and support for their mental health and other issues that are affecting them. Keep in Touch Have a lovely July and do please get in touch if there’s anything I can help you with.

BEN WALLACE MP Covid Update In my last article for Focus, I spoke about restrictions being eased. Unfortunately, since that time, it has been necessary to slow the easing down slightly. Quite rightly, there is still a great deal of hope and optimism that we are past the worst and there are brighter days ahead.

The government has also prepared a useful guide for businesses - www.gov.uk/ coronavirus/business-support - which includes information about working safely, the restrictions in place and financial and other support which is available. J. R. & D SILLIS BLINDS Notice of Retirement On July 1st I shall be 82 years of age with nearly 50 years in the window blinds business. I think it’s time to retire! The business is due to cease trading at the end of June 2021, however negotiations are currently taking place that may enable it to carry on under new management. Jean, who has worked with me since 1987 is also looking forward to retiring. She has been a real stalwart, part of the fixtures and fittings. She is not only good at making blinds, but has been a good ambassador, always cheerful and helpful on the phone. I would like to thank all of my customers who have dealt with me over the many years. It’s been a real pleasure meeting so many intersting people and enjoying so many thousands of cups of teas etc! Thanks again.

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) details: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ coronavirus-covid-19/testing/regularrapid-coronavirus-tests-if-you-do-nothave-symptons/ PC Kev Berry On a non-Covid subject, I would like to wish PC Kev Berry a very happy retirement from policing. Kev has been the Poulton and Over Wyre neighbourhood police officer for a number of years and I have always found him approachable and helpful. Kev joined the police back in 1992 and I am sure has witnessed many changes. I was lucky enough to ride with Kev around his area during a patrol and witnessed first hand his enthusiasm and professionalism. As well as undertaking all the usual work we expect of police officers, I often came into contact with him when he was helping in matters which many of us wouldn’t usually consider to be police work, such as helping people with mental health problems, homeless people and checking on the welfare of older people. Kev will be missed. I am sure I am speaking for the local community when I say ‘thank you for your service Kev and good luck in the future’. Local Issues As lockdown eases and the rate of work on the new road between Windy Harbour and Skippool increases, many motorists are experiencing delays in their journeys. Please be assured I am monitoring the work and my office is in constant touch with Highways England to ensure every measure is taken to aid the flow and safety of traffic. Keep in Touch As always, my mailbag has been full of letters covering many issues. I say it often, but please do keep the letters and emails coming. Although I pride myself on travelling around the constituency listening to residents,

If you would like to join the band of volunteers to donate even a little time to the cause please contact the parish clerk for details. Best Kept Village Hambleton has again entered the best kept village competition. Some of the key things that are judged are amount of litter, areas being kept weed-free and road signs being visible and clean. These things are not just for judging but make Hambleton a better place to live and visit. Please consider keeping areas around your own home tidy eg ensure grids are clear of debris and roadside and pavement outside your home are weed free.

If you notice anything in the village that looks particularly unsightly, and you are unable to sort yourself, please report it to the appropriate channels and if in doubt contact the parish clerk for support. Unfortunately the village has been a victim of vandalism over recent weeks with graffiti on bus shelters and glass smashed to the point where we could potentially lose one of the shelters. This would be a sad loss to many due to the actions of a few. There have also been reports of issues up by the river, for example tampering with the life belt and breaking down fences. Some of these actions have resulted in letters being

If you have any ideas that you would like to be considered please contact the clerk or speak to one of the councillors. Speeding in Village Sadly there have been a number of incidents on the roads in and around Hambleton recently. The council has set up a road safety group and had the first meeting last month.

Working with the local primary school, there has already been a walk to school day and a road safety poster competition organised. Look out for the winning posters around the village. The parish council is also in the process of purchasing two new speed indicator devices which will, when installed, highlight the issue of speeding around the village. If you have concerns about road safety in the village, you have been involved in an accident or near miss due to speeding in the village or if you have children and are concerned for their safety on the village roads, please contact the clerk to register your interest. Yet again, we have very recently seen several more accidents on the A588 through our village. We have notified Ben Wallace, MP and Cllr Shedwick. Road safety and poor driving are both a serious concern not just in Stalmine but Over Wyre in general. HAMBLETON FLOOD ACTION GROUP Progress meetings continue. A FLAG meeting with WBC took forward our concerns to the agencies at the Making Space for Water meeting and the full Flood Forum meeting. A Hambleton Walk About Meeting was held in June with WBC and LCC reps. Birkrigg & The Coppins on the A588: Following repeated house flooding the issue remains unresolved. The related water course has been checked as working. The Environment Agency has carried out work, the details of which are to be confirmed. The desilting of the Kiln Lane Water Course we believe remains an issue. Investigations of the A588 surface water drainage is underway from Ryecroft to Carlyn Property, and may provide further options for mitigation. Kiln Lane & Sherbourne: Flooding on Kiln Lane and Sherbourne is linked to the two pipe systems that flow from Sherbourne Road to

Rydal Outfall which are is now cleared. The upper half of this has been surveyed and a report issued for action. The FLAG is liaising with UU regarding the link between high tides and heavy rainfall causing flooding. UU will be undertaking installation of flow meters in November 2021. These were promised in 2019 but covid and budget restraints intervened. Hambleton Sea Defences: The inability of water to drain when the Wardleys flap is closed contributes to flooding. The EA has been asked to review the sea defence design so as to reduce tide locking and maximise the outflow. However there is also a surface water drain outfalling direct into Wardleys Pool which requires review. Culverted Water Course: The flooding in junctions Carr Lane, Market Street, Stoney Lane, Paul’s Lane and Sandy Lane is related to the problems that exist with this system. There are issues concerning Churchtown, St Michaels, Great and Little Eccleston, Out Rawcliffe, Hambleton, Preesall and Thornton Cleveleys which officers are studying and finding solutions for. WYRE FLOOD ACTION GROUP (cont) of the debate. The list of issues and actions produced for each meeting demonstrates the revolving nature of drainage and flood prevention. There is always something to repair, for example a drain beneath the A586 at Churchtown which issues into the Wyre will necessitate over night closure in July to deal with a suspected blockage. The west gate of the Garstang Flood Storage Basin is due to be replaced and work on the re lining of a 900ml drain in Green Lane East by contractors continues. In the meantime, United Utilities strives to maintain water quality for Wyre and coastal residents. Take a look at the following article to find out more... Roger Brooks

THE PROBLEM WITH PESTICIDES Franklaw Water Treatment Works provides drinking water for an estimated 650,000 people living in the Fylde, Preston and the Ribble Valley areas. The treatment works utilises water from a variety of sources, including the river Wyre. The standards for drinking water are necessarily high and to help treat the water effectively a range of chemicals are monitored in the untreated water, pesticides being one of them. In recent years, the number of detections of pesticides has increased. Before being delivered to our houses, pesticides must be removed from the water at the water treatment works, which is an expensive process resulting in increased operational costs, power consumption and carbon impact. Pesticides are frequently used in the Wyre catchment to improve land for livestock

pasture and to control weeds on roads, railway lines, parks and in gardens. Two pesticides which are commonly found within the River Wyre are MCPA, which is often used to control rushes, nettles and thistles, and Diazinon, an insecticide used to treat parasites of sheep such as blow-fly, ticks and lice. Even small amounts of these chemicals can pollute several kilometres of river. They can enter watercourses via surface water flows or through drainage channels and subsurface drains, which is particularly likely if they are applied just before heavy rainfall. Pesticides can also enter watercourses directly due to spillages, improper disposal, or from spray drift in windy conditions. The insecticide diazinon can also enter watercourses via leaks from the baths which sheep are dipped in during treatment or drips from treated sheep.

Pesticides, if used incorrectly or carelessly can be damaging to the environment. For example, at a high enough concentration, diazinon is highly toxic to aquatic insects such as caddisflies, mayflies and freshwater shrimp. Healthy populations of these species are vital for a healthy river; they provide important ecosystem functions such as decomposition and provide a food source for a wide range of fish and birds, some of which are protected species in the Wyre catchment and across the UK. Research has also shown that at high concentrations diazinon can damage the olfactory systems of Atlantic salmon, which can impact their migration ability. Since 2018 the Wyre Rivers Trust have been working with United Utilities, the Environment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming to monitor concentrations of certain pesticides within the upper Wyre catchment. This has involved taking water samples at 20 sites on the Wyre and its tributaries during the summer months and into autumn when pesticide use is at its highest. In 2020: •

seven different herbicides and one insecticide were detected, including one which is not licensed for use in the UK

80% of samples tested for herbicides contained one or more herbicide

40% of samples tested for herbicides contained concentrations that meant treatment would be required in order to make them safe to drink

50% of samples tested for insecticides contained diazinon

Concentrations of pesticides were particularly high at Dolphinholme, Street Brook and Foxhouses Brook

We have also been engaging with a range of pesticide users to improve understanding

PROBLEM WITH PESTICIDES (cont) around the use of pesticides, to try and reduce the amount of pesticides used and ensure that best practice is followed when using these products. Here are some tips for using pesticides on your land or in the garden: •

Check that the product will control your problem before buying it

Do not apply pesticides if rain is expected in the next 48 hours

Work out exactly how much you will need and avoid buying more than you will use in a year

Do not use within 6m of any watercourse

If you do find you have left over solution, find a patch of permitted plants or weeds to spray the excess onto. Do not pour it onto bare soil where it can build up in groundwater

Do not use surface water drains to dispose of unwanted pesticide. They often lead straight to the river

Empty weed killer containers should be rinsed three times, adding the washings to the spray solution

Always keep chemicals in their original containers

Dispose of unwanted pesticides at your licensed local authority waste site - Fleetwood, Longridge, Lancaster or Preston Household Waste Recycling Centre accept chemical waste

RSPCA (cont) Tetley came into our care after his previous owner was no longer able to care for him. He lived with an un-neutered male rabbit in his previous home however they fell out so had to be split up. Tetley is an inquisitive rabbit who isn’t that keen on being picked up. However he soon settles and begin to enjoy company. He loves his veggies and he will need plenty of fresh hay to munch away on his new home. Tetley is also looking for a female bunny who will provide him with much needed companionship. For information on suitable rabbit accommodation and what is required in terms of space, please contact the branch. KNOTT END RAILWAY They say a new broom sweeps clean, and it’s certainly true with us - out with the armchair pilots and in with the grafters. Following on from our last meeting at Parrox Hall (our thanks to Mr Elletson), the railway now has an official fundraising team (with thanks to Leanne Murray) plus our very own web page. Leanne has been like dynamite and we are eternally grateful to her and Matthew Salter as Leanne is also applying for charity status on our behalf. The railway is also hoping to have its very

first loco soon; a Simplex 0-4-0. It has been rescued from Bishop Auckland and is under restoration. It will be ideal for shunting duties and work trains and becoming Rusty for our ‘Friends of Thomas’ events. We have also been approached by an engineering firm near Preston which has kindly offered to build our passenger coaches and when completed will be painted in maroon and cream (or ‘blood and custard’ as nicknamed by British Railways). September could see us holding our first fundraising family event within the grounds of Parrox Hall. There will be various attractions plus live bands, rides, a beer tent and more, so watch this space! Many thanks to those who have donated various items of bric-abrac for the fundraising stall. SOROPTIMISTS Women Inspiring Action, Transforming Lives It doesn’t seem two minutes since our last report but here we are again – and busier than ever. Like they say, time flies when you’re having fun! This month we have been giving more attention to climate change. It’s our organisation’s main thrust this year so we’re seeing what small changes we can do to make a big impact. 1. Reduce emissions: Use your car less, whenever possible. 2. Save energy: By being careful how we use home appliances, we can save energy and, of course, money at the end of the month. 3. Put the 3 R’s of sustainability into practice: Reuse, Recycle, Reduce 4. What about your diet? Eat low-carbon. Eat food that is local and in season: read the label and eat food that is produced in the area, avoid imports which create more emissions due to transportation. Also, eat seasonal items, to avoid less sustainable production methods. Avoid excessive packaging and processed foods as much as possible. 5. Act against forest loss: Plant a tree! Throughout its life, it can absorb up to a ton of CO2. 6. Make demands from the government: Demand that they take measures toward a more sustainable life. Calculate your carbon footprint: at www. clevercarbon.io Use this revolutionary new carbon quiz to calculate your carbon footprint online. It only takes two minutes!

Sea Bank House

A special home for special people Sea Bank House is a residential home for elderly people who are unable to live independently in their own homes. Or philosophy of care is based on the belief that it is the right of any resident in the home to be respected as an individual, and that everyone has the right to be allowed to live as full and active a life as both their mental and physical condition allows. We endeavour to provide an environment which is not only comfortable and homely, but gives the warmth and understanding normally associated with family care but supported by specialist equipment and well trained care staff. Needs are met maintaining personal dignity, privacy and encouraging independence where possible. Activities, passive and active are encouraged throughout the day by trained care staff under the guidance of the Home Manager. Each care plan takes into consideration the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, in order to create a care plan that is relevant to individuals. Recognising, nurturing and encouraging the residents remaining skills and ability to communicate is or paramount importance to the quality of care given at Sea Bank House.

SOROPTIMISTS (cont) Regional Activity June also saw another regional meeting (again remotely). All the clubs were asked to do a short presentation on what they had done for climate change. When we went through our projects, I think it’s fair to say we were really proud of our achievements and even prouder when Joan put them together into a short video. It was really interesting to see what all the other clubs in the north west region have been doing – seeing where we are undertaking similar activities and to get ideas for potential new projects. You can watch the short video on at http:// bit.ly/sorrow-short-vid or hop along to our Facebook page. WOW Women We also looked into a report on the Generation Equality Forum in Mexico, which has pledged to double the number of women and girls working in technology and innovation. The plea was ‘So, as a Soroptimist what will your contribution be?’ Soroptimist International Garstang’s answer – our WOW Women profiles. This is going to spotlight local women and girls entering into and succeeding in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) areas – a male dominated sector. You will be hearing a lot more about this soon. Blister Packs – and a Petition Finally, our petition of the month picked up on the blister/medicine package recycling that we have been involved in. We have held two hugely successful public collections of these in Garstang, and more will follow. The petition seeks to get all pharmaceutical companies to support the recycling of medicine packaging, an important element of the climate change agenda.

Please do join us in signing this petition at: http://bit.ly/sorop-blister-packs AfriReuse Fundraising for our charity for 2021/22 AfriReuse www.afrireusepads.org is currently being planned. Normally by now we would have had at least one event - the bric-a-brac stall on Garstang High Street but with all the upheaval of Covid this has been scrapped again for his year. But never fear, there will still be plenty of opportunities for readers to support us in our work. And in fact, one member has been running a small ‘virtual’ bric-a-brac stall by offering a few items through Facebook with no charge, just a request for donations. So if you happen to see anything you fancy please don’t hesitate to dig deep for us. June Speaker Our guest speaker for the latest social meeting was Nicki Detko, who is a transplant survivor and talked to us about her experiences of competing in national and international sports events. Full report next time. Further Information & Membership Don’t forget to keep checking our website and Facebook page for fuller, regular reports on what we’re up to. Why not look into joining us to help make a difference? Just drop us a line or give our membership co-ordinator Muriel BurnhamAirey a ring. We’ll be happy to talk to you and answer your questions. Until next month, take care and enjoy friendship. t: (01995) 606604 (Muriel Burnham-Airey) w: www.sigarstang.org.uk facebook: SoroptimistsGarstang twitter: GarstangSoropt

Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund Life seems to have gone from almost standstill to a race against time to fit in as many events as we can before the summer is over or another dreaded lockdown happens! Watch out for our banners and logos around the area as sales and events are organised and happen very quickly at the moment. A clothing collection, a day at the St Michael’s and Bilsborrow car boot sale, further mask sales by kind courtesy of Pat Collins (together with customers of Nicksons) and generous donations from our lovely neighbours have resulted in over £500 being added to the screening pot during the last month. That’s enough to screen 10 young folks for undiagnosed heart conditions so a huge thank you to everyone who has been instrumental in achieving this.

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG (cont) As I write, a young Danish footballer, Christian Eriksen, is in hospital after collapsing very publicly on the pitch during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 game against Finland. Thankfully his condition is said to be stable as a result of the wonderful immediate medical response. Whilst this recognises the important role of rapid CPR and use of defibrillators, it is also essential to note that the majority of collapses and sudden cardiac arrests happen at home when people are alone, resting or asleep. Undoubtedly proactive screening can and does save lives, as our events at Garstang have mercifully verified, and we are so thankful for that. CRY’s own research has shown that testing young people between the ages of 14 and 35 has lead to an 89% reduction in Young Sudden Cardiac Deaths (YSCD) which is an absolutely outstanding achievement, but what about the agony and suffering of that remaining 11%? We understand that no screening programme is ever going to be foolproof but, as a family who have lost someone so precious to this silent killer and have no answers as to why he died, we feel further research is unquestionably vital in reducing this figure too and hope it won’t be too long before the fund is in a position to give some practical support towards CRY’s valiant efforts. We’d love to know your thoughts on this so if you see us out and about stop and have a chat or contact us on the details below. BOOK REMEMBERS VILLAGE LIFE A hundred years ago this July the village of Crawshawbooth on the edge of the Pennine Hills held a pageant that lived in the memory of local residents all their lives. Stories about it passed on through families, going into village folklore. The pageant was held to raise funds for the village church, which has now been closed and in a sad state of disrepair for many years, although reuse is now pending. However, the details of the pageant miraculously survived, and are recorded in a new book, Fallen Leaves of an Ancient Forest. The book is available by post, cheques made out to Rossendale Civic Trust. Please ring for details of BACS payment. All profits go to Rossendale Civic Trust, Registered Charity 503616. LANCASTER SINGERS

hear their voices joining together. They were accompanied on piano by Ian Tate. The weather couldn’t have been better and there was a lovely background of bird song in the evening sunshine. A small committee had taken great care to ensure all the Covid security guidelines were observed and although this meant that singers had to be seated appropriately distanced and had to avoid singing loudly, it didn’t take anything away from the enjoyment. The director of music, Duncan Lloyd was unable to attend so members of the choir stepped up to the podium to conduct familiar pieces that were mostly already known to the choir. It is as yet uncertain when the Lancaster Singers will be able to meet in person indoors but at least this gave us one opportunity to sing together. www.lancastersingers.org

Sing Together at Last

HARMONY & HEALTH

Last month Lancaster Singers met for the first time in 448 days to sing together in person.

Remote Singing Sessions

The rehearsal was in the playground of Bowerham Primary School. This was a longawaited and joyful event which was evident from the smiles on members’ faces as they sang. The pandemic has prevented the choir from singing together in person but they have met almost weekly on Zoom to learn, rehearse and keep in touch with one another. Throughout the past year, the director of music, Duncan Lloyd directed the Zoom singing and has created rehearsal tracks to help members learn their parts. The chair, Chris Haughton organised the sessions, as well as social events. The singers had not heard each other sing since March 2020 and it was wonderful to

LANCASHIRE WEST TREFOIL GUILD

1ST PILLING SCOUT GROUP

All our guilds in Lancashire West are now looking forward to meeting face-to-face in the not too far distant future. However the recent government guidance has been extended into July so we can only hope that freedom day will happen very soon.

We have been enjoying the good weather this summer and the young people have been having a marvellous time at 1st Pilling Scout Group.

A member of one of our guilds painted a card of condolence and sent it to the Queen on the loss of her husband HRH Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh on behalf of Lancashire West County. We have received a lovely acknowledgement from the Queen thanking us. The Duke did so much for young people through the DofE award scheme. Many girls have attained this award when they were in girlguiding. When we are given the go ahead by HQ and restrictions are relaxed we will publish our programme. Elaine Robinson (01253) 790692

Currently, we meet ‘face-to-face’ outdoors at Pilling Methodist Church during term times on Wednesdays, 7:00pm until 8:00pm. We cater for boys and girls aged six to 14 years. • • •

Beavers age six to eight years old. Cubs age eight to 10 ½ Scouts age 10 ½ to 14 years.

Our dedicated leaders, assistant leaders and adult helpers enable us to give the young people life skills, a sense of adventure, teamwork and fun. We are part of the West Lancashire Scout County in Wyre District Scouts and our uniformed Group in Pilling enjoy the Scouting Resources available to us . We have had our annual general meeting on Zoom due to Covid and accounts presented and audited in these very strange times. We are nearing the end of the summer term so we will also be finishing until September when hopefully all restrictions will be lifted so that we can meet indoors once again. Our numbers have almost returned to ‘normal’ and, as we are restricted to a ratio of one to six adults to children we need more adults to come forward to help. Training is given. THE SCHOOL ON THE HILL Preesall Fleetwood’s Charity School For many years we have taken our Year 6 pupils on a residential trip as we believe it is an important part of their education. Being away from home for children is a huge

THE SCHOOL ON THE HILL (cont) learning experience as it allows them to develop their independence and confidence and also see new places outside of their home environment. We usually take Year 6 to an outdoor and adventure centre in Lockerbie which is amazing! The children learn a range of team-building skills; they learn to support each other as well as undertaking personal challenges and overcoming their ultimate fears! This year, due to the Covid pandemic, we were disappointed to hear that Scotland was not re-opening its centers until later in the summer so our visit was cancelled. Our Year 6 pupils have already missed out on so many school activities in the past twelve months so we were determined that they would get a trip away! Last month, we went on a three day residential to the fabulous city of York. On the way we stopped at Heaton Park in Manchester where pupils and staff completed a Tree Top Trek (for many this was quite a challenge!) and also had an amazing time on the nets play area. If you haven’t experienced this, it really is somewhere you should go if you get chance! In York we stayed at Stableside which is on the race course. We couldn’t have chosen anywhere better – the accommodation and meals were excellent and we were so well looked after. Our pupils loved playing on the race course on their first evening and we even watched two hot air balloons go up and float off into the distance. After some sight-seeing and shopping, we had a history day, visiting three of the venues linked to Jorvik. Year 6 enjoyed learning about life in medieval times; they learnt how to be archaeologists and then discovered the sights, sounds and smells of life in Viking Britain. The day finished with a ghost walk around

THE SCHOOL ON THE HILL (cont) the city. Our tour guide was Mark from the Original Ghost Walk and he kept our pupils entertained with some spooky tales from times gone by. Our final day was a trip to Flamingo Land which really has something for everyone. Year 6 spent the day experiencing some exhilarating rides and getting completely soaked in the water fountains. These trips create lasting memories that our pupils will treasure forever. Providing wider experiences outside the curriculum is something we are passionate about at Fleetwood’s Charity School as there are so many more skills that children need to learn about life, themselves, each other and the world they live in. I hope that next year, we will be able to go back to Lockerbie Manor and our current Year 5 pupils will get the full outdoor and adventurous experience but Year 6 had an

GARSTANG WALKING FESTIVAL

PARKINSON’S UK

Normally we would hold the Garstang Walking Festival in May, but this year we needed to wait a little longer as we progress through the roadmap out of lockdown. We are making plans to be back with the 2021 festival on Sat 28th Aug to Wed 1st Sept.

Hello everyone, remember us?

There will be five days of walks and activities and something for all abilities to enjoy. It might be a little later in the year but it will be worth the wait! After so long in our homes, Garstang Walking Festival is the perfect way to rediscover our beautiful scenery, heritage and, of course, the friendliest walk guides! For now, save the date and we will post further details as soon as bookings are open. GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB

Hello to everyone, camera enthusiasts or otherwise. If we were dining out, we would be between courses, having a little respite. Our ’20-’21 programme has come to an end and we now await the new season which will start on Wed 1st September. On reflection, the past year has been as good as was possible given the situation (I refuse to use the word ‘Covid’. It has become too much a part of everyone’s vocabulary). All meetings were via Zoom and therefore we

GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB (cont) could access presenters from nationwide locations. Our thanks go to our programme secretary, John Moxham for making some excellent choices.

If the Garstang Show does take place this year on Sat 7th Aug, the club will have a stall in the horticultural marquee with the aim of attracting some new members.

By the time this article is in print, we will have four of our summer outings remaining, which are:

I must end this article on a sad note. I have to inform readers and club members past and present of the passing of one of our popular members, Bill Hansell.

Fri 16th July, 8:00am onwards Brockholes

Wed 11th Aug, 6:00pm - Heysham

Sat 18th Sept, 8:00am onwards Silverdale/Arnside

Tues 12th Oct, 10:00am onwards Rufford Old Hall / Martin Mere

We were very lucky for our first visit to Glasson - clear blue skies and warm too. Not so with our second trip to Calder Vale a damp afternoon, although I must add that my late appearance was accompanied with sunshine and a colourful sky.

CROSSWORD (ans page 59)

Bill had been a member for a number of years and was an excellent and successful photographer, his name engraved on many of our trophies. He was always willing to give of his time and experience to those lesser mortals in the club. He would always be amongst the friendly jousting bouts between members and their specific marques of equipment, Nikon v Canon v Sony etc. but as most will agree, it’s not the camera but the person behind it ! His most recent award was that of holding Across 3 Iberian country (5) 6 A female relative (4) 8 Grab; kidnap (6) 9 Require (4) 10 Outdoor meal (6) 11 George ____ (Author of 1984) (6) 12 Thin layer (4) 13 Ambassadors (6) 14 Tie (4) 15 Noise when sleeping (5) Down 1 Grass cutter (9) 2 Entwined; spliced (10) 4 Writing instrument (6) 5 Goals; purposes (10) 7 The end of a chess match (9) 10 Competitor in a game (6)

WYRE BOROUGH COUNCIL Changes to Wyre’s Cabinet Following the Lancashire County Council elections in May earlier this year, a number of changes to Wyre’s Cabinet have been made. Councillor Alan Vincent has been elected Deputy Leader of Lancashire County Council with responsibility for Resources, HR and Property. Councillor Vincent has therefore stepped down as Deputy Leader of Wyre Council and Portfolio Holder for Resources. Taking his position on Wyre’s Cabinet and Deputy Leader position is Councillor Michael Vincent. Councillor Alice Collinson has also joined Wyre’s Cabinet as Portfolio Holder for Planning Policy and Economic Development. Commenting on the changes, Councillor Michael Vincent said, ‘I sincerely look forward to taking on the role of Deputy Leader at Wyre and working with officers and councillors in my role as Resources Portfolio Holder.

Wyre from 2017 to 2018 and made great connections with residents across the whole of the borough and I look forward to working with them more as your cabinet member.’ Boundary Commission Initial Proposals The Boundary Commission for England (BCE) has published its initial proposals for new constituency boundaries. The public are now able to view and provide feedback on the proposed constituencies as part of an eight-week consultation process. The 2023 Review of Parliamentary constituencies was formally launched in January this year. The Commission is required to ensure that the number of electors in each constituency is more equal; in doing so, the number of constituencies in England will increase from 533 to 543. The Commission is undertaking an independent review of all constituency boundaries in England and will

‘In my career as a councillor I have been fortunate enough to work on some fantastic projects and I look forward to continuing this as your Deputy Leader.’ Councillor Alan Vincent, commented, ‘I will deeply miss my role as Wyre’s Deputy Leader and Resources Portfolio Holder, but I look forward to my new role as Deputy Leader of Lancashire County Council. ‘I hope that I can help bring about great changes to the whole of Lancashire and add a Wyre perspective to the county’s Cabinet.’ Councillor Alan Vincent remains a Wyre Councillor for the Victoria and Norcross ward. WYRE BOROUGH COUNCIL (cont) present final recommendations to Parliament by July 2023. Publication of the initial proposals today is the first time people get to see what the map of new constituencies might look like. The rules that the Commission work to are such that wide scale change is inevitable. Under the proposals announced today, just under 10% of the existing 533 English constituencies remain unchanged. Members of the public are encouraged to visit www.bcereviews.org.uk/node/6487 to view maps showing the proposed new boundaries for the North West and provide feedback before the consultation closes on Mon 2nd Aug. People can comment on anything from where the proposed new boundary lines are to the names of the constituencies. There will be a further two rounds of consultation in 2022. Following the conclusion of all three consultation periods, the commission will look at all the evidence received and form its final recommendations. Tim Bowden, Secretary to the Boundary Commission for England, said: ‘Today’s proposals mark the first time people get to see what the new map of Parliamentary constituencies might look like. But they are just the Commission’s initial thoughts. Help us draw the line to make the number of electors in each Parliamentary constituency more equal. ‘Each constituency we recommend is required by law to contain between 69,724 and 77,062 electors, meaning there will be significant change to current boundaries. ‘We want to hear the views of the public to ensure that we get the new boundaries for Parliamentary constituencies right. Have your say on our online consultation portal’. See www.bcereviews.org.uk www.wyre.gov.uk
