EDITORIAL The arrival of another Costa del Sol summer invariably signifies chilled-out holiday breaks, quality time with family, dining out with friends and generally treating ourselves to a few well-deserved extravagances. Invariably, that is, because last year – unfortunately for most of us, and sadly for many – our best-laid plans were disrupted in unprecedented fashion. This summer the situation has, thankfully, improved significantly, although any planned getaway to an exotic destination will most likely have to be re-considered and replaced with a “staycation” or road trip closer to home. Fortunately, over the past 15 months “home” has become an even more cherished part of our lives, and the key to us still being able to enjoy the renowned Mediterranean lifestyle – a veritable haven away from the travails of a global pandemic. Many of us have taken the opportunity to spruce up our homes and revamp our living areas, which means that our homes are possibly better prepared than any summer before to host intimate dinner gatherings or, if space allows it, grander and more lavish garden parties. We have also, apparently, been spending more time exploring and incorporating the latest trends in high-tech luxury. According to LG (Life’s Good), “With home still the place to be in 2021, many consumers are investing in ways to make their living environments more comfortable, convenient, healthy and even a little bit more stylish, so much in fact that high-end home categories including premium household appliances, premium furni8
ture and designer interiors are seeing across-the-board growth this year.” Interestingly, notes the consumer electronics corporation, many people are finding they have more time to carefully curate their own living spaces. “It might be argued that this trend is long overdue since who wouldn’t agree that homes should be designed by the people who are going to spend the most time in them? And premium furniture brands seem more than happy to embrace innovation while still adhering to their brand heritage and design identity.” Even more importantly, since the COVID outbreak a growing number of people have been opting for materials, fixtures and products for the home that don’t just take lifestyle aspects into consideration but also have the objective of creating a healthy environment. As far as luxury lifestyle touches are concerned, an increase in wine sales during the pandemic is reflected in the popularity of one of LG Signature’s star products, the Wine Cellar with InstaView technology. “This might just be the perfect home furnishing for vino lovers to store different wine varieties in precisely-controlled, customisable climate zones for their viewing pleasure without opening the door.” Sounds like an excellent plan – and one we are quite happy to drink to. Enjoy your summer and let’s all raise a grateful toast to our awesome homes.

IMPRESSIVE TABLETOPS Tableware sets the tone for your dining experience. Experts have noted that weight, texture and colour can all contribute to how someone perceives the food they are eating. Though white circular plates have always been a standard in tableware, irregular-shaped plates and bowls in darker muted colours have become increasingly popular in recent years, adding a less formal look to the table. Patterned plates and bowls offer a playful setting, but try to combine them with some plain plates to prevent the table from looking too busy. Here are some ideas…

DINING
DESIGN The dining table brings the household and visiting guests together to enjoy good food and conversation. A table that is at the right height with wellspaced seating around it is key to offering comfortable dining. Dining chairs should not be too heavy and cumbersome, so they can be manoeuvred easily, and the ideal distance from the top of the chair to the tabletop is between 25 and 30 centimetres. Investing in a high quality table that will stand the test of time is especially worthwhile if, for example, you want it to be able to cope with a battering from hot dishes and heavy cookware.

OUTDOOR
LIFE
Summer is well and truly here, so it’s time to concentrate on your outdoor living area. Investing in high-end furniture makes good sense, as it will last longer and usually comprise high-quality materials that will stand up against harsh weather conditions such as intense UV rays. If you have a small terrace, be careful not to fill it with lots of bulky furniture, as it will look cluttered and make the space seem smaller than it actually is. Always make sure you have a shaded area, so that you have somewhere to retreat to when the sun is too intense but also where you can still enjoy the outdoors. Don’t forget side tables for placing drinks when lounging in the sun – you don’t want to be leaving glasses on the hot floor, ready to be knocked over. Outdoor living is a huge part of the Mediterranean lifestyle, so embrace it in style! A relaunch of a pioneering model from 1965, Ligne Roset’s Saparella modular range consists of a fireside chair, diabolo and footstool. Its soft curved lines invite you to relax outside in contemporary style (www.ligne-roset.com). HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

CONTEMPORARY OUTDOOR FURNITURE for Your Home this Summer INTERVIEW WITH KRISTOFF VAN LANDEGEM – CO-FOUNDER OF METAMORFOZA MARBELLA
You are an exclusive retailer for Jati & Kebon in Spain. Can you tell us more about this brand? Jati & Kebon is a Belgian brand of stylish and durable outdoor furniture. For those who might wonder where “Jati & Kebon” comes from, it is an Indonesian name and means “Teak & Garden”. In recent years, the dynamic brand from Deinze in East Flanders has increasingly claimed its rightful place in the international market. What materials do they tend to use most in their collections? Teak from the early days is no longer the only raw material. For years now, outdoor furniture has been produced in aluminium and braided rope, as well as fabrics and cushions in sun and water-resistant Sunbrella – or even table tops in high-quality ceramic. The quality assurance from the very beginning has always remained and has become synonymous with everything the brand produces. How did it come about that you opened a showroom in Marbella? This is actually a combination of the following... A love for Spain, the fact that you can enjoy the outdoors here for 12 months; and, in my opinion, the lack of garden furniture in the right price/quality ratio. For a long time we had therefore been looking for a suitable property in a commercial location, where we could present our furniture as we envisioned. We were lucky to find a property in the Oasis Business Centre on Marbella’s Golden Mile. There are many outdoor furniture companies on the Coast. What distinguishes Metamorfoza from the rest? I can say that with our collections we always strive to offer customers the best price-quality ratio. Together, our team has more than 30 years of experience in guiding customers to choose the right garden set or accessories for them. We approach each customer in a very personal way. It would actually be best for customers to answer this question themselves, or I 64

would invite people to get to know us and experience for themselves how we stand out from other companies. You have already carried out many projects here. Which one stands out for you the most – and why? We are equally proud of every project, no matter how small or how large it is. It is always nice when customers send us a photo afterwards to thank us for carefully thinking about what they need and helping them along the way. In the short time we have been here, we have had the luxury of furnishing beautiful modern villas, full communal pool areas, traditional houses, apartments etc., and we are proud of each and every one of them.
What especially interesting items can we buy from Metamorfoza this summer? Our lounge sets from Jati & Kebon are a hit because of the unparalleled seating comfort that we offer. The inflatable lounge furniture from Fillup – for both around and in the swimming pool – is also nice. For those who want to cook at home with friends or family, we have very exclusive outdoor kitchens from Indu+ (induction or gas). We also have new outdoor boxes from Escape for the party people among us. CHIC Due to the pandemic, we have been spending a greater amount of time than usual in our living rooms of late, making us realise even more how important this room is in the home. It is a place to rest and read a book, to switch off and immerse ourselves in a good film, and to relax and chat with other household members and friends. Whether your style is sophisticated-chic, boho or outrageously bold, a good sofa is always a great investment and sets the look of the room. Keep the layout uncomplicated with a clear walkway space around the furniture for an organised and restful look. Don’t just settle for a coffee table to rest your cups, books, phones, etc. Consider smaller tables beside your chairs’ armrests for handy extra surface area, and they can sometimes also offer useful storage to help keep the room less cluttered. A rug underfoot adds cosiness and a welcoming feel and can really make a statement – and don’t forget your windows! There are a number of window solutions to finish-off the overall look of the room such as dramatic ceiling-hung curtains and louvre blinds that allow you to control the filter of sunlight entering into the room, and thus set the mood. Lighting is another important way to set the ambience, so small lamps dotted around the room for intimate pockets of soft illumination will give the living room a warm and welcoming feel.

WAKING UP YOUR WALLS Dress up your walls with some wallpaper and it can be quite transformative, even on just one wall. Textural wallpapers and coverings add depth and warmth, and bold patterns will show off your artistic expression! Grasscloth wallcoverings have become especially popular recently. They add a natural feel to a room and are very durable, although the price tag can be high. Wallpapers brighten up a room, serve as an artistic statement and add cosiness – so they can really make an impact.

KITCHEN TRENDS In the past, kitchens were a purely functional place where the cook prepared the meals and they were very rarely visited by the rest of the household members. Now the kitchen is often the heart of the home. With open-plan living becoming ever-more popular, in contemporary homes the kitchen tends to merge into the living room and dining room, bringing everyone together in one space. Hi-tech appliances and gadgetry have taken the cooking experience to another level whilst design has become more ergonomic with nifty storage ideas to keep surfaces clear and the kitchen orderly. Furniture items that are frequently seen in other areas of the home are, these days, not out of place in the kitchen - such as a chandelier, a painting, statement wallpaper or even an armchair. This makes the space more inviting and personal, and helps you veer away from the sterile look that kitchens of old once had. Natural materials such as wood and stone have become popular in recent years, and rightly so, as they are highly durable and add their own unique character to the room.

BALLINGSLÖV THE SWEDISH KITCHEN, BATHROOM AND STORAGE COMPANY THAT OFFERS MORE FOR LESS Interview with Clemens Lindquist
Photos by Johnny Gates
Tell us how Ballingslöv started out and how you came to open a showroom in Marbella. The first Ballingslöv showroom opened in Skåne (Sweden) in 1929 and now we have numerous showrooms, mainly in Sweden, Denmark and the UK. Ballingslöv has grown extensively and is now number two in the market in Sweden and Norway. I have a home here in Marbella and had carried out some private kitchen projects whilst I was staying here. The projects were very successful and a growing number of people were asking me to carry out projects for them as they particularly wanted 118
Swedish manufacturing and design. I could see there was a real demand for Swedish-style kitchens, but there weren’t enough companies to supply the demand, so opening a showroom here seemed like the natural thing to do. What new innovations have Ballingslöv launched recently? One interesting new feature is the safe drawer, which can be opened with fingerprint identification or with a phone app. The safe is hidden within the top drawer and is extremely durable and even fireproof.

What material seems to be especially popular for kitchens in recent years? Wood is more popular than ever. I think it is the character of wood that is so alluring, and the fact it is so durable makes it very practical for a kitchen. We have a wide range of different samples of wood to choose from, ranging from light to dark grains. Even though your showroom mainly focuses on kitchens, you also sell other products. Tell us more about that. Yes, we also are in the business of bathrooms and storage. We are constantly evolving with the times. In fact, we have just brought out a new style in cabinetry which we are very excited about. Our bathrooms have clever cabinetry, bathroom accessories, furniture and fittings. What is the Ballingslöv philosophy? We are 100 per cent Swedish in our concept, from the materials we use to the craftmanship and of course the design. All the wood is imported from Sweden, which guarantees top quality at a good price, and everything can be made-to-measure. We offer our customers a turnkey solution, as we have very reliable construction companies that carry out beautiful refurbishments. We are all about customer service and have even been known to invite our clients over to our own homes to show them examples of our work for some inspiration! Our friendly approach means that many of our clients have become good friends, and this is what makes our job so enjoyable. If you would like to know more about Ballingslöv, pop into their showroom for a chat with Clemens or Nina in Centro Plaza in Nueva Andalucía, or visit their website www.ballingslov-marbella.se. Softness and a sense of protection are what inspired designer Alessandro Busana when creating the Blanket bed for Bonaldo. The base is a large, soft quilt which then rolls up at the top to form the headrest. Bonaldo is available through Siesta Interior Design in C. RESTFUL BEDROOMS Your bedroom shouldn’t be a room that you’re tired of, but instead it should help you relax when you’re tired. Simplicity is key when it comes to bedroom design, ensuring that it is relaxing to the eye. Keeping this room clutter-free with good storage, soothing colours and unfussy decoration is one simple way to create a restful space. A top-quality bed and mattress is the best option to give yourself a superlative night’s sleep. The investment might be heavy, but it can also be life-changing. It is very important to be able to control the light in your bedroom, so make sure you have good window solutions. Ceiling-hung curtains can add drama, whilst wooden blinds add a more minimalist contemporary look. When the sun goes down, dimmable lighting is best with directional bedside lamps for reading. As we spend one-third of our lives sleeping, a zen-like bedroom is a must!

NEW MARBELLA DESIGN EXHIBITION PLANNED FOR THIS AUTUMN Mallorcan-born Carolina Abril has worked in the hospitality and tourism industry for many years, and has organised several major events in her career. Now, she is in the throes of preparing the first edition of Design Week Marbella, scheduled to be held from 27 September to 3 October this year. We met up with her to get the exhibition lowdown…
What made you decide to organise your first project in Marbella? After working for many years in the trade fair and congress sector, I was asked to help organise an interior design event, but there were some fundamental flaws with the logistics so I decided to organise my own event. My aim is to help put Marbella on the map as a meeting point for professionals and interior design lovers, and I have formed a fantastic team to help me achieve this. What especially attracted you to Marbella? Marbella is not only a magical place that has always made me feel very welcome, but it is also bursting with creative professionals at the top of their game. With the support of Marbella City Council and other institutions, this has made me feel even more confident to carry the project through to fruition. 142
How has the health crisis affected the events sector? Obviously, it has been very difficult but the interior design, architecture and construction market is strong and seems to have bounced back faster than other sectors, so we are looking forward to a successful week. What distinguishes Design Week Marbella from other exhibitions that you have managed? Design Week Marbella wants to offer visitors the possibility of being able to build a house from scratch through a careful selection of developers, architects, interior designers and other professionals in the sector. We want our visitors to feel inspired by offering them exceptional experiences and ideas. For more information: Tel. EL MIRADOR DE LA RESERVA DE SOTOGRANDE
SOUTHERN EUROPE’S HIDDEN PARADISE
Offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean and Gibraltar and surrounded by golf courses, El Mirador de La Reserva de Sotogrande is a private residential complex developed by Sotrogrande S.A. that has been designed and built by ARK Architects and superbly integrated into nature. With its exceptional mix of sustainability, efficiency, design and privacy, this project truly is one-of-a-kind in southern Europe. The six sustainable and energy-efficient villas awaken emotions and generate a wonderful experience for the senses, offering a high quality of life that fuses together nature, water, natural stone, wood and light, ensuring that a feeling of well-being is perceived at all times, as the development seamlessly blends into the natural environment. 144
Special importance was given to minimising energy consumption. As Manuel R. Moriche from ARK Architects explains, “Anyone who sees the size and dimensions of these villas would assume that, in order to maintain a pleasant temperature inside the home, energy consumption would be exorbitant. However, we were determined to stand by our architectural commitment regarding environmental integration, and therefore we couldn’t put our name to a project that was going to have a negative impact on the environment. “Each villa is angled in such a way that the diaphanous and functional spaces are blurred between the interior and exterior, thus maintaining direct contact with the environment at all times. In addition to the low level of

energy consumption, special attention has been given to the development of home automation. This opens up numerous possibilities for the implementation of internet-controlled household objects, a trend that is especially highly valued by new generations who are more familiar with technology and who consider the ‘smart home’ to be a must in their lifestyle.” One of the main Reynaers Aluminium systems chosen for the villas is the Hi-Finity – a minimalist sliding window that provides an optimum amount of transparency and enables the interior to merge uninterruptedly with the exterior. With Reynaers Hi-Finity, the aluminium profiles are so discreet that the frame is invisible, offering impressive glazed surfaces that stretch from floor to ceiling.
Moncada Aluminium, a member of the Reynaers installer network, was also part of the project, specifically in regards to the manufacture and installation of systems for windows, doors and sliding doors. MAXIMISING COMFORT
WITH A MODERN MEDITERRANEAN DESIGN
As specialists in “comfort construction”, Naxfor Homes are well-placed to provide invaluable information for people keen to improve their home projects. Here they outline some key tips, accompanied by photos of one of their recently-completed homes in Marbella, designed by leading architect Alberto Rodríguez of RDM architecture. The Costa del Sol climate is renowned for being quite mild, but in summer it can become less pleasant. Using extended layouts enables the creation of shady spaces in the lower area and terraces in the upper part, where you can enjoy outdoor life to the fullest. The use of simple lines gives a sense of order and balance, while glass railings make these spaces look lighter from the outside without obstructing views from the inside. It is always a good idea to try to integrate the garden and pool with the rest of the house. Being able to feel close to them while sitting on the sofa is an absolute pleasure. It is also advisable to choose local plant species such as olive trees, as well as cacti and other plants adapted to a dry and hot climate. This will greatly reduce water consumption and also add special character. Smooth walls covered with white plastering is a tradition on the Costa del Sol, and makes the house look cooler, but it is also interesting 146
to combine them with walls comprising local white stone. For the floor, it is most convenient to use durable materials that allow light to be reflected from the outside to the inside of the house. In the home featured here, we opted for porcelain stoneware in large-format pieces. By using the same flooring inside and out, an attractive continuity between the two spaces is achieved. Inside, open spaces and light colours create lightness and freshness. The false perimetral ceiling is very elegant and adds a sense of greater spaciousness. The division between the ground floor rooms can be achieved through different ceiling heights or by how you place the furniture and carpets. In home décor, the choice of a simple and refined style of neutral colours always works here on the Coast, but a boho style with small ethnic touches can also add more personality while maintaining a relaxed ambience. The winners of this year’s Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism will be announced on 2 July. Previously, the 15th edition of the “Bienal” (popularly known in the industry by its Spanish acronym BEAU) was due to be inaugurated in Barcelona on 28 June. One of this summer’s major cultural events in Spain, BEAU is being held at two venues in different parts of the country: the Pabellón de Barcelona from 28 June to 16 September and the Patio Herreriano de Valladolid from 2 July to 10 October. A third “venue” has been set up on a digital platform at www.labienal.es, offering updated news, agendas and parallel programming, as well as streaming of the various events associated with the Bienal. The finalists have already been named in four categories covering research, photography and final-year student projects, plus an overall panorama of architecture and urbanism trends the past three years. According to the judges, the entries reflected a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability, and “a high level of practical utility and relevance within the framework of the current social and cultural context”, while also highlighting architecture and urbanism’s social responsibility.

THE ABSOLUTE IMPORTANCE OF A
PROPERTY’S LOCATION AND ORIENTATION By Marco Dalli
With the nightmare of COVID-19 slowly starting to recede, people from all over the world are discovering the benefits of investing and living in Spain, especially southern Spain. Of course, this has never been in doubt for the early pioneers who settled in this part of the world many years ago. For example, the famous Golden Mile was only two lanes, the entrance to Puerto Banús was a dirt track, and you could drive in and out of Marbella port without a special pass. For many of us who were around at that time, there were only a handful of restaurants and bars. A drink at Sinatra’s Bar (in Banús) was like going down to your local pub as you would know most of the people, and Victor’s Beach was the meeting place for most of the boats coming from all over the Coast. At that time there were no restrictions to how close you could come to the shore, but new restrictions put an end to this. However, those same restrictions also applied to the amount of wastewater that was being pumped into the Mediterranean, and now sea water – especially in summer – is much clearer and cleaner than it used to be. So it’s a shame that those same restrictions which are now saving us from swimming in contaminated water don’t apply to people giving out murky advice on property purchases in Spain. Always focus on the unseen. First off, you should never purchase a property just because the sun is shining on it. Location and orientation are absolutely everything – if you get one of those points wrong, you could be in for a big shock. You should always do a little homework on the location of a property that you are interested in. I have had clients tell me about a
property they were looking to purchase in Puerto Banús and it turned out to be kilometres away, but they were assured it was in the zone known as “Banús”. Always look at the orientation. Do you get morning sun – evening sun in the winter? This is such an important point as the property you are interested in could be spending most of the day in shade, and that’s certainly not what you want. At our studio, we focus mainly on location and orientation. You can’t change those aspects, which is why they are so crucial. Remember that you can always change the property’s other features to the way you want it to be. I am always looking for the worst buildings in the best streets for our clients. Once we have located a property, which is not easy, our clients appreciate what it’s all about: location and orientation. The Marmorin build and design studio represents companies in the construction, design and property investment sectors that were all pioneers during Marbella’s early developing stages. Not many people know that the Marmorin build and design studio are experts in basement construction and reform. Basement design is highlyspecialised and can not only add useful living space to the home, but also great financial value. ed and reinforced and, moving forward, evolving in tune with societal changes and advances. As they note, “The future begins with a change.” The initial step in this evolution involved designing a more stylised logo. “The first letters are intended to evoke a sound equaliser, and its curvatures make an allegory of modernity.” Subsequently, this revitalised image was incorporated into all of Illusion’s brand elements, including vans, uniforms, merchandising and a new website. As for the showroom itself, the key aim was not only to remain at the forefront of the industry, but also to showcase latest innovations in an ambience that “reminds the client of the comfort of their own home, so that they can form a clearer idea of how the project that we will de-
Technology for smart homes and entertainment systems is evolving rapidly – and so is Illusion. The Marbella-based company has been creating state-of-the-art experiences for clients since 2006, offering lighting, control systems, audio-visuals and electric curtain solutions at its San Pedro de Alcántara showroom. Throughout those 15 years, Illusion has been fully committed to providing inspiration to customers who are seeking high-tech and latest-generation ideas for adapting their homes and making their lifestyles more convenient, functional and pleasant. Now, they have taken this commitment to a new level, with a major revamp of the showroom, in addition to other recent changes in the brand’s high-end image. According to Illusion, the main objective with the showroom transformation was to respond to these ongoing uncertain times by developing a more modern aspect, while ensuring client services are, first of all, consolidat-
velop for them”. To that end they have added several solutions from Delta Light to the existing lighting, and adapted the audio installations to accommodate both indoor and outdoor options in the same space. “One of the novelties is Sonance’s invisible speakers, invaluable to the eye, as they completely disappear into one of our walls. They are an ideal option for those who want to enjoy exceptional sound quality without sacrificing a clean and minimalist design.” In addition, they have set up speakers from top English manufacturer Meridian in the living room space, and speaker models by Italian firm Architettura Sonora in the vertical garden. Finally, they renewed a selection of the furniture to enhance the showroom’s elegantly contemporary look, and complement the product displays. The professional and highly-skilled team at Illusion offer consulting, design, execution and maintenance services for both individuals and commercial clients. “Furthermore, we always rely on leading brands in their sectors that support and reinforce our aim. All have made a significant contribution to shaping us and building trust over the years.” Illusion Calle Ávila, No 17, Local 2, Urb. Guadalcántara, San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella) Tel. PRETTY IN PINK IN TIME FOR SUMMER By Alia Babapulle
Who doesn’t like the lovely shades of pink which we find in nature? From deep shades to very faint blush, they lend an air of sophistication with Peonies and rustic happiness with Carnations – the red Carnation being the national flower of Spain. There is a huge spectrum of colour with the pretty in pinks. Let’s have a look… Pink is the symbol of femininity, love, romance and tenderness. It is a common choice for gardens as it is also known to contribute to calm and relaxation. Studies also relate this colour to individual features and suggest that people preferring pink colours in their every-day life are organised and good planners and stick to already formed habits rather than being lovers of trying something new. Pink colours are associated with positive emotions and are believed to be a source of smiles and positive vibes. It is perceived as one of the most romantic and attractive colours which, at the same time, is cheerful and playful. We are all familiar with Roses, Hyacinths (with their heady perfume), Fuchsia, Tulips, Dianthus, Camelias, Azaleas, Begonias, Buddleja, Calla Lilies, Carnations, Cherry Blossom (unforgettable in Japan), Chrysanthemums, Dahlia, Hibiscus syriacus and Geraniums, just to name a very few. Many of them have a heady perfume, so we are blessed with beautiful flowers and a wonderful aroma in our gardens. As always, if you go to your garden centre, ask the staff there what you should buy. If you have a sun-filled garden, like mine, flowers which prefer a more subdued light and heat will not flourish. If you are growing in large pots, move them around. I am a great believer in doing this; it’s as if the plants have a holiday growing and blooming in a different spot. 152
If you want to pop in some pink bushes, try these... Bougainvillea (who doesn’t know about this iconic flower, living as we do in Spain) Elderberry, Azaleas, Hydrangeas, Quince, Lilac and Lantana. All are very hardy and can take the hot Spanish sun. As always, never water flowers from the top – only the roots. If they have become dirty after a wave of dust from Africa, wait until the evening and only then can you wash the flowers/bushes down from the top. Use good fertiliser, open up the soil around the plants from time to time so it does not become compacted, and dead-head when you can. All these normal practices will keep your flowers/bushes growing beautifully for a long time. Put various pots of pinks together, mixed with some dark or silvery leaves – all flowers look gorgeous with dark or silvery leaves – and don’t stint. Obtain large pots, good soil, fertiliser and three plants together, for impact. Plant the leaves at the back, making sure they will grow higher than the flowers. Of course, if you plant into a garden, the same applies. Well that’s a start to pretty in pinks. I hope you have a lot of success and always have fun. Contact me by email if you have any queries for gardening in general and for landscaping projects. Stay safe to enjoy your terrace or garden. HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN Article supplied by Atlas Group
Your home garden should be a functional sanctuary, an extension of your property where you can relax and enjoy its comfort in equal measures. Where better to embrace the great outdoors than the Costa del Sol, which enjoys over 300 days of sun each year and an enviable climate that entices many people from all over the world to live or holiday here. Since the pandemic, there has been greater demand by people wanting to create a retreat in their garden, with a nicely designed space for the whole family to enjoy all year round but also suitable for this Mediterranean climate, which is highlighted by milder winters and hot, dry summers. Whether you have several hundred metres of open space or a small terrace area, there are plenty of options to turn your garden into the perfect space. 154
Feel inspired to invigorate your outdoors with some tips from the experts at Atlas Group. What is trending in Marbella in terms of modern gardens? A good proportion of luxury properties in the Marbella area feature a modern architectural style. These can be striking to the eye, so gardens can be used to complement and soften, with moving grasses or flowering plants. Using the garden more effectively to ensure every space is taken advantage of, and that it is an extension of the home, is a popular trend. Barbecue and dining areas are common, for obvious reasons, while many families consider the needs of their young members by having play areas and children’s pools.

I want to create a beautiful garden but not spend a fortune on the maintenance. How can this be done? Choosing the right plants is key. Native plants to Spain are an obvious choice, due to their general hardiness for the climate. Seek foliage that requires minimal watering over the summer months, such as grasses, cacti and succulents, and ensure you have a good irrigation system able to be controlled via home automation or your mobile phone. For larger gardens, palm and olive trees are the typical choice and, with a little maintenance from professionals, they will remain pest-free and healthy all year round. My outside space is limited. How can I make the most out of it? If you have a terrace only, or a smaller garden space, there is still plenty that can be achieved to make it a pint-sized retreat during the hot summer months. Plunge pools are vertical bodies of water that can be a couple of metres in length and height but deep enough for a cooling soak in July and August. These are ideal on terraces too, as they take up little space and can have glass walls to create an eye-catching design feature. Consider creating a vertical garden as well, so that plants can creep up the walls rather than take over a sprawling flower bed. Equally, a smaller
garden can be quite functional, with tiling on the floor and a mix of materials to ensure minimal maintenance while also leaving the environment perfect for potted plants that can add colour and movement. Flowing water features can also create a sense of calm and are easy to integrate into a small or large space. My Costa del Sol property is a second home. How can I ensure the garden and pool are looked after when I’m not in Spain? Firstly, employing a maintenance company is essential. A professional and trustworthy company will keep the pool clean and working efficiently, ensuring healthy water quality, ready for your arrival to enjoy it. The team at Atlaspool and Atlasgarden work in harmony to maintain both the swimming pool and the garden, delivering adequate watering, overall care of the plants and the grass, as well as pest control tailored especially to the plants, taking into consideration the safety of children and pets. NOBU BAR LAUNCHED WITH JAPANESE ARTISANAL GIN EXPERIENCE
Nobu Hotel Marbella is offering guests a tailor-made Roku Gin gastronomic experience to celebrate the launch of Nobu Bar. Nobu Marbella executive chef Eleni Manousou worked with Rodrigo Tartaglia, head bartender at Nobu Bar, to create a pairing menu in which each Nobu-style dish is combined with a cocktail based on Roku Gin – with the aim of achieving a sumptuous harmony of flavours. Roku, which in Japanese means “six”, is a perfectly balanced premium artisanal gin with a distinct flavour based on six Japanese botanical plants: Sakura flower, Sakura leaf, Yuzu skin, Sencha tea, Gyokuro tea and Sansho pepper. These are carefully collected following the “shun” philosophy – that is, only when they are at their right point of maturity, according to the season – and this enables them to reach maximum levels of flavour and perfection. The plants are distilled using a selection of different stills, each chosen to ensure the best flavour is extracted from each product, and they are me158
ticulously blended by Japanese artisans at Suntory House in Osaka. Roku Gin is produced by Beam Suntory, who have been making gin since 1936. The menu begins with one of Nobu’s star dishes: lemon fish and jalapeño combined with the Sakura Fubuki cocktail (Roku Gin, ginger, Yuzu tonic and cherry bitter). Guests can then savour grilled sea bass on Inaniwa green tea and a clear geinmacha soup broth accompanied by Roku Sour (Roku Gin, ginger liqueur and elderflower, Yuzu and egg white). This is followed by a main course of lamb chops with Sancho pepper teriyaki paired with Shoganai Martini (Roku Gin infused with cardamom, rhubarb, grapefruit and lime). And to finish... a mandarin mousse with flambé fruit and Roku jelly accompanied by Ronin (Roku Gin, Nobu the Shochu, raspberry, lychee and chili piquín). The menu is €85 and only available on Tuesdays until 30 September. www.puenteromano.com / @PuenteRomanoResort

The Role of the
SOMMELIER By AJ Linn
What is the reaction of most restaurant customers on being offered the wine list? Ordering the cheapest is a sign of a skinflint, and – unless the customer has a serious knowledge of, and interest in, wine generally – what often resembles a leather-bound version of the Old Testament becomes a challenge that the dining-out experience should not feature. We go to a restaurant to enjoy ourselves and, while the menu itself may present some minor challenges, the maitre d’ is there to answer every query with confidence. Is the job of a sommelier not the same? There is an old joke that those who have limited experience invariably order the second least expensive wine on the list. But while everyone knows what a lettuce heart or a veal cutlet is, terms like “barrel-aged” and “matured on lees” can be unfamiliar. In the majority of cases we settle for ordering a wine that we know and, just to seal the decision, the second least expensive will do nicely. The moment arrives when the wine waiter or sommelier will show us the bottle of wine and then take it away to be opened. It’s odd that we need to see it, since we know what we have ordered, but we merely nod and say thank you. A small amount is poured and the chosen “taster”, with only a vague idea of what reaction is expected, merely remarks “That’s fine” and the play-acting continues. Negative scenarios may include remarks about the temperature of the wine or, disaster, it smells “corked”. If the wine does indeed have an unmistakable bottle taint the mere drawing of the cork will have released it without the need for tasting. I have drunk more bottles of wine over many years than most people and cannot remember encountering a wine that was genuinely corked, although there must have been a few. In fact, when I hear someone in a restaurant tell the server that the wine is corked, my suspicions are aroused. What the customer generally means is that the wine is not to his liking, or that the taste of a mature garnacha is so different from that of a cabernet sauvignon that it appears strange enough to be unpleasant. But never forget the golden rule: we are not asked to taste the wine to see if we like it. It is assumed we have chosen a wine we believe we will enjoy, and this is certainly not the time or place to experiment by requesting a wine we want to try as if we were at a tasting session. Most restaurants have a budget for perfectly good wine that has been rejected unjustifiably by “experts”. Sommeliers are frequently driven mad by inconsiderate customers. Quite simply, the majority are not sure what they are there for. The most common misconception is for them to pour the wine, as if the waiters cannot do that. Although it varies from country to country, the generally-accepted
role of the sommelier, or “somm” as they are annoyingly referred to in the States, is advisory. They are not order-takers, even though they are often treated as if they were. They are ready with the wine list once the food has been ordered, and a considerate diner, even one with a good knowledge of wine, should ask their advice. There are often wines that have arrived so recently they are not yet on the list, and these can be the most interesting items. The sommelier will probably have ordered them and knows everything about them. To miss out on the resulting recommendation is a loss for everyone. And we should not be embarrassed asking about the price. It is quite acceptable to enquire after “a red wine from one of Spain’s secondary regions” (ergo, not Rioja or Ribera del Duero, but one from the other 59) “that will go with the fish we have ordered and will not break the bank”. Never forget that ideally the sommelier will taste the wine before serving it to be sure it is in perfect condition. He knows more than we do so let him get on with it. He will spot a bad bottle before we do. Tipping? It is not customary to tip the sommelier individually unless he has done something over and above the normal requirements of the job, and in any case his greatest satisfaction is waving goodbye to a customer who has made his job worthwhile.
SOLLO – RESERVA DEL HIGUERÓN (BENALMÁDENA) At first glance the idea of eating in a restaurant that has always been associated with one particular dish or dishes can be off-putting. When chef Diego Gallegos started Sollo, the speciality was locally-produced caviar from Río Frío, and the rest of the menu was constructed around freshwater fish, notably sturgeon and trout. Not a great deal has changed except that there is a Michelin star and many other noteworthy awards, making it one of the most highly-recommended eateries in the area. The open-plan kitchen and friendly service are positive elements that may compensate for smallish portion sizes and a lack of ambience, but when I was there recently to appreciate the additional luxury of a superb Ribera del Duero wine, Pintea, made by Mexicans in Ribera del Duero, everything was perfect. The tasting menu is priced at €130 and the wine list is one of the best, although with on-the-high-side prices (www.sollo.es).

LET’S HELP FIGHT LONELINESS TOGETHER By Rachel Garrod
We have a pandemic! No, not COVID-19 – loneliness. In a report from 2017, 45 per cent of adults said they felt “occasionally, sometimes or often, lonely”. Recent events have, of course, exacerbated loneliness; lockdowns, social isolation and the inability to see our loved ones have been debilitating for many. Loneliness is a health issue. People who consider themselves to be lonely, much of the time, are more likely to develop heart disease and strokes; have poorer health outcomes than those who smoke 15 cigarettes a day; and be at greater risk of cognitive decline or dementia than people who report feeling lonely only occasionally. Loneliness can hit anyone, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. Loneliness can be emotional – relationships not being what you desire; or social – lack of social interaction. Lockdowns have inevitably increased our sense of social isolation. For expats living in Spain loneliness can be further exacerbated by a sense of “not fitting in” or a loss of things from our native country, and if we are not great at speaking Spanish this sense of isolation can be worsened. So what is there to help those who may feel lonely in Spain? I am a volunteer for the charity Age Concern-Marbella and San Pedro, which is running a campaign aimed at tackling loneliness: “Befriend a neighbour”. We will be reaching out via radio advertisements, newspaper articles and flyers. Even short interactions – such as a “Hello” on the street from a neighbour, a coffee and chat, or just a message, “Hi how are you?” – can help alleviate loneliness. We are hoping that if there is a neighbour you know, who is older, possibly vulnerable and suffering from social isolation, you can take a little time to knock on the door, to say “Hi” and just facilitate a culture of friendliness. Age Concern is also organising coffee mornings in cafés throughout Marbella and San Pedro, and for vulnerable clients we can arrange for a volunteer to become a “buddy” who will be there for weekly chats and visits. Age Concern will help with trips to hospitals and shopping, but people need communities, and we can only achieve that if we all take the time to act thoughtfully. Right now, there are far too many people sitting alone with only the television for company. For more information on how to receive our newsletters, become a client or just get a little help, please visit our website: www. ageconcernmarbella.com. Or call our Helpline: (+34) 689 355 198. EXERCISE COCKTAIL MAY BE OPTIMAL APPROACH MEDICAL MINUTES BY JOHN SCHIESZER
A new American study out of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is suggesting there are multiple ways to achieve the same health benefits from exercise, as long as your exercise “cocktail” includes plenty of light physical activity. The study employed data from the REGARDS (Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke) Study, a long-running national study of differences in stroke. “For decades, we’ve been telling people that the way to stay healthy is to get at least 30 minutes of exercise five days a week,” said study investigator Keith Diaz, an assistant professor of behavioural medicine and director of the Exercise Testing Laboratory at the Centre for Behavioural Cardiovascular Health at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. “But even if you’re one of the few adults who can stick to this advice, 30 minutes represents just two per cent of your entire day.” The recommendation about how much exercise to do is not wrong per se, according to Diaz. However, it may be insufficient depending on how individuals spend the rest of their waking day. Previous studies tended to look at the impact of one type of activity or another in isolation. But each activity has either harmful or beneficial effects on health. Only with the recent advent of inexpensive and easy-to-use activity monitors, which can be worn by study participants throughout the day, have researchers been able to address the question. With data from six such studies including more than 130,000 adults in the United Kingdom, United States and Sweden, the authors used a technique called compositional analysis to determine how different combinations of activities affect mortality.
They found the benefits of 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise depend on how you spend the rest of the day. The current recommendation of 30 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous physical activity reduced the odds of an earlier death by up to 80 per cent but only for some individuals. “It is not as simple as checking off that ‘exercise’ box on your to-do list,” said Diaz. “A healthy movement profile requires more than 30 minutes of daily exercise. Moving around and not remaining sedentary all day also matters.” The researchers found that people who spent just a few minutes engaging in moderate to vigorous physical activity lowered their risk of early death by 30 per cent as long as they also spent six hours engaging in light physical activity. “Getting 30 minutes of physical activity per day or 150 minutes per week is what’s currently recommended, but you still have the potential to undo all that good work if you sit too long,” said study investigator Virginia Howard, a professor of epidemiology at the UAB School of Public Health. The researchers say a “cocktail formula of 3 to 1” is best. They found that getting three minutes of moderate to vigorous activity or 12 minutes of light activity per hour of sitting was optimal for improving health and reducing the risk of early death. “This new formula gets at the right balance between moderate to vigorous exercise and sitting to help people lead longer, healthier lives,” said Howard. EXHIBITION BY BRITISH PHOTOGRAPHER IN ALHAURÍN EL GRANDE
The “Smoulder” exhibition by British photographer Suzy Corby will remain on show at the Municipal Library (Biblioteca Municipal) in Alhaurín el Grande until 31 August. The exhibition forms part of a project by the photographer aimed at capturing the environment created in forests after they have been destroyed by flames – and encouraging viewers to reflect on the importance of preserving nature. Corby expresses herself in images depicting “the profound silence that invades a burnt forest, the vision of charred trees, still standing, silent witnesses to the devastating effects of fire, still rooted in a lifeless ground covered with ashes; the rancid smell of
burned wood... an amalgam of sensations that evoke the memory of what these forests were like before they were destroyed by man – and that they will not be the same again until dozens of years have passed”. Contrasting with this apocalyptic vision, Corby also highlights “the magical and subtle beauty of both the landscape of a burned forest and the black and bare shapes of the trees, which leads us to discover that there is no shadow without light”. Opening hours: Monday-Friday 9.30am-3.30pm and 4.00pm-8.30pm; Saturday 9.30am-1.30pm

BUGATTI CHIRON POTENCY EMBOSSED WITH
HERMÈS DESIGN CHIC
When it comes to a passionate Bugatti collector, few would be able to match the intensity of Manny Khoshbin’s enthusiasm. “I am a true Bugatti aficionado,” says the US-based entrepreneur. “I wanted to name my son ‘Ettore’ but my wife disagreed.” He soon found a different way to indulge his passion, and ensure his wife remained happy. “When I saw the Chiron1 for the first time in 2015, I was one of the first customers in the world to reserve a build slot, yet one of the later to take delivery of one, but the reason for that was down to me.” Manny Khoshbin decided to manifest his vision and his devotion to Bugatti, and to inspire others, by “defying the limits of custom automotive design”. He arranged for Bugatti to create a truly unique Chiron that would elevate luxury motoring to an even higher level, and the result was the “Chiron habillé par Hermès” hyper sports car. “For any Bugatti connoisseur,” explains the French marque, “to own a hyper sports car hand-crafted in the French luxury marque’s Molsheim Atelier is a lifelong wish. For some, this is not enough, and they have more than one Bugatti model to admire in their collection. 166
“They take their dedication to the legendary automobiles even further, and come to Bugatti with visions for their very own personalised hyper sports car – in reference to Bugatti’s coachbuilding past of the Type 57 models, where Bugatti’s individualisation options were a major USP. “The ‘Chiron habillé par Hermès’... revives the relationship of the two French brands, whose owners Ettore Bugatti and Émile-Maurice Hermès laid the base for a new form of luxury which France stands for up to this very day. The phenomenal result brings dreams to reality.” After years of collaborating closely through the creative process, earlier this year Manny Khoshbin took delivery of the “Chiron habillé par Hermès”, which is highlighted by an intricate and special application of colours, fabrics and finishes. The Chiron is adorned in the distinguishable leather shade of “Craie”, made famous by Hermès handbags and other luxury goods. The off-white, chalkderived hue envelopes the complete outside of the car, creating one single exterior colour, whereas most Bugatti Chiron models consist of two main colours for contrast. The rear bumper, all mesh covers, trim parts and Bu-

gatti “Classique” alloy wheels are also finished in “Craie”. Other exterior design traits include a horseshoe grille on the front customised with the Parisian brand’s signature “H” monogram, and its classic “Courbettes” motif on the underside of the rear wing. The “Courbettes” design features sketches of rearing horses and was especially chosen by Manny Khoshbin to emphasise the Chiron’s immense power output of 1,500 PS. The new owner chose the optional “Sky View” glass roof, adding two fixed glass panels above the driver and passenger seats, while the exposed engine bay hugging the top-side of the hyper sports car is the only exterior item not finished in “Craie”, apart from “Italian Red” brake callipers and aluminum-finish door sills. Almost all material used for the interior is crafted by Hermès, with “Craie” for the seats’ leather, middle console, inner signature line, roof and rear panel, and door clasps. “Ecru” leather around the centre console, dashboard and other parts of the interior, developed by Bugatti, combines with the “Craie” shade, and the carpets are finished in Bugatti’s “Beige”. Looking back on the creative process, Manny Khoshbin said, “I took my time to draft the car and that was very much a conscious decision – this is a car that I will one day hand down to my son, it will live for generations. “I’m truly thankful to the teams at Bugatti and Hermès for making this happen. I came to Bugatti with the idea, and it’s not something that they’d usually do but they were open to the notion of making something special. Now I have three Bugatti models in my collection, and there is soon to be a fourth. There’s this one, and two Veyrons, one a Grand Sport Vitesse ‘Les Légendes de Bugatti’ Rembrandt Bugatti, that I love just to look at, they are so beautiful. Then we’re about to take delivery of a Bugatti Baby II for my son. He is Bugatti mad, and gets excited every time he hears the name.” Hermès and Bugatti have worked together in the past. Before World War I, Ettore Bugatti commissioned saddles and other leather tack from Émile-Maurice Hermès – grandson of founder Thierry Hermès – and the company’s leather later appeared in 1920s Bugatti racing cars. In 2008, Bugatti paid tribute to this enduring relationship with the “Bugatti Veyron Fbg par Hermès”. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

NEW TOLLS PROPOSED FOR SPAIN’S MOTORWAYS FROM 2024 Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountant
The Spanish government has proposed 2024 as the launch date for implementing a system of tolls on motorways in Spain. This proposed toll payment is based on two fundamental criteria, according to the director of the Dirección General de Tráfico (national traffic department), Pere Navarro: “The one who pollutes, pays” and “The one who uses, pays”. The measure, which has been in place for several years in other European countries such as Portugal and France, is included in the “Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan” that the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, sent to Brussels to facilitate the arrival of European Union funds aimed at reducing the negative effects that the global COVID-19 pandemic has had throughout Europe. The main intention of this proposal is to pay for the maintenance of Spain’s extensive road network. One of the largest in Europe, it extends for more than 24,466 kilometres, 12,000 of which comprise high-capacity roads such as motorways and dual carriageways. According to the Spanish government, ”it is not possible for these costs to be assumed directly from public budget resources”. It is proposed that this system will be included in the future mobility law. In relation to heavy vehicles used for transporting goods, the document details that ”these costs will be assumed by the shippers”. However, the government has offered an assurance that this issue will be dealt with directly with professional transporters in order to avoid conflicts such as those experienced in France in 2019.
178
For private vehicles, the government plans to carry out an awareness-raising campaign to familiarise drivers with the urgent need to implement the measure. In addition, to mitigate the public rejection that this system is likely to produce, and is already producing, among Spanish drivers, “affordable fees” as well as reductions or bonuses will be established for several groups and frequent drivers. The fees are expected to be between approximately three and five cents per kilometre on motorways. In order to illustrate more clearly what this measure will entail, we have estimated that the price for a trip between Marbella and Málaga (capital of the Costa del Sol) would be between €1.80 and €3. This plan for tolls on motorways in Spain is quite ambitious as the Spanish government intends to introduce them progressively not only on motorways and dual carriageways, but also on the entire national road network. It will require the Spanish cabinet giving a “first reading” to the mobility law before next June. However, it is not expected to be approved before the second quarter of 2023.
