CHANGING ROLES IN PROBUS

AS we embark on a new year, we are so grateful to Club and Association Management Committees for the ongoing and active support of their Probus Clubs and wider communities.

We are approaching the Annual General Meeting of Clubs, that provide opportunities for members to nominate for positions on their Management Committee. This is a meaningful way for members to contribute to the ongoing success of their Cub as well as the opportunities to strengthen relationships with other members. I encourage all members to consider joining their Club’s leadership team.

The past months have involved the formation of a number of working groups comprising of members willing to contribute their skills, expertise and advice. One such group is the Marketing Consultative Committee made up of Probus members from across Australia and New Zealand.

This group is working directly with our PSPL team to provide their input on our future promotional and marketing programs including the development of our new website.

Another group has been formed in New Zealand to advise and assist with the arrangements and organisation of the 50th Anniversary of Probus in the South Pacific. As you may be aware, the first club was formed in Kapiti Coast in November 1974 and remains as popular and vibrant today.

We have convened a working group of enthusiastic volunteers from both North and South Island Clubs to assist with coordinating this celebration as a national/ international event. This significant

undertaking will be a shared vision and a commemoration of 50 years of Probus in New Zealand. This milestone will be a great rallying point for all Probus Clubs and members and a great source of pride!

One of the primary objectives of Probus South Pacific is supporting all Clubs in membership retention and growth, helping to keep Clubs healthy and active. Our membership strategy is centred around a collaborative approach that sees us all working together for our mutual benefit.

Over time, our membership strategy has evolved and with that, so have the roles of Membership Representatives that include Ambassadors, Probus District Chairs and Rotary District Probus Chairs. We are most thankful for the valuable contribution by these individuals on a regional basis. At the national level, each year, Probus South Pacific Limited (PSPL) seeks nominations from Probus Club members who wish to serve on the PSPL Board or on one of the PSPL Nominating Selection Committees (NSC).

The role of a PSPL Representative Member/Director is, in conjunction with the Board, to ensure the continued growth and success of Probus in the South Pacific region. They are volunteer positions which previously required travel to Sydney on a quarterly basis. However, for the past three years, due to the pandemic, all meetings have been held via technological means with the exception of the Annual General Meeting in August.

We are now calling for nominations from Probus Club members to fill upcoming vacancies for the positions of Representative Member/Director in New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory, Western Australia and New Zealand. The term of office for successful candidates will be from August 2023 to August 2026.

We greatly appreciate the valuable contribution of the current Member/Directors for each of these areas of selection, Bill Killinger AM, Graeme Brown and Tony Blaber, respectively.

Members, particularly those who also have business experience in finance, accounting, communications, marketing, or as a public company Director, are urged to consider nominating. Given the large proportion of female Probians, we hope to see women who meet the criteria nominate for these roles. We ask any member who meets the criteria to consider this opportunity. Further information about the roles can be found on PSPL’s website or by contacting our team.

Hopefully, like me, you are looking forward to creating new memories in 2023 and enjoying everything it has to offer.

EXPLORING THE HEART OF AMERICA

of an American Queen paddle steamer on the Mighty Mississippi, and Ohio & Tennessee Rivers, there is much to discover of America’s Southern States.

The Mississippi is 3,782 km long and the upper and lower reaches offer different experiences. The Lower Mississippi cruises showcase the Civil War, and flavors of the ‘deep south’. On the Upper Mississippi, natural splendor comes alive along the dramatic riverbanks and bluffs of this glacial valley and bald eagles swoop on the wake of the paddlewheel, as you relive the stories of Mark Twain.

History plays a large part of the river cruise experience, and the onboard guest historian – known as a ‘Riverlorian’ – will inspire guests with insights and stories. Andree Sabourin, Groups Manager, Cruise World in NZ, cruised from New Orleans to Memphis onboard American Duchess and noted, “their talks are not to be missed because they set the scene of where you are and what you are seeing.”

AMERICAN Queen Voyages™, recently ranked the top US river cruise line, offers the most varied and comprehensive portfolio of North American itineraries and experiences. Their authentic paddlewheel riverboats, boutique exploration vessels and expedition ships navigate North America’s legendary rivers, Great Lakes, and iconic shores from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to the Yucatán Peninsula and the great land of Alaska.

Aboard intimate ships designed for discovery, adventure and camaraderie, guests are welcomed into spacious luxury, with genuine hospitality, acclaimed dining and

cuisine, curated enrichment, and all-inclusive value. The river cruise fares include 1-night pre-cruise hotel stay with transfer to the vessel, guided tours, beverages, Wifi, daily entertainment and enrichment, bicycles and hiking sticks, port charges and onboard gratuities.

America’s history and culture emerged along its great rivers, lakes and ocean coastlines. Native Americans, explorers, colonists, immigrants… all found passage along these water highways. Cultures met, opportunity fueled ambition, battles were fought, traditions and cuisines were blended.

From the luxury vantage point

America’s great rivers once served as conduits for spreading the music of a new nation. From New Orleans’ Dixieland jazz, to the Blues, rock and soul of Memphis, to homegrown country melodies from Nashville - it all harmonizes with the rhythms of the river and is a key feature onboard, and in the shore excursion offerings. Sabourin says “it was wonderfully varied, of an excellent standard, and such a highlight. The live entertainment is a hallmark of American Queen Voyages and the talented performers provide shows that are worthy of Broadway.”

In 2023 American Queen Voyages embarks on uniquely American river cruise itineraries including a 23 Day, 22 ports itinerary from Pittsburgh to Minneapolis, and special interest, curated themed itineraries around food, history and the popular Kentucky Derby. 

Come celebrate America with us. From the storied currents of the Mississippi to the vast horizons of the Great Lakes, her vistas never fail to inspire. From the quaint shorelines of New England to the majestic wilderness of Alaska, her natural beauty is astounding. From the gentle breezes of Georgia’s coastal isles to the sparkling blue of Pacific beaches, her shores are warm with welcome. There’s a graceful small ship waiting to take you there.

FRED.OLSEN CRUISE LINES

“Miroir d’Eau” (Mirror Fountain). We spent the evening and morning wandering around Bordeaux before heading off to the neighbouring wine area and hilltop village of Saint-Émilion.

The overnight in Rouen meant we could do a walking tour of the old town, and then stay on to try out a local restaurant and do some shopping into the evening. Brest in the Brittany region is very historical with excursions to Quimper the oldest village in France; and the village of Locronan which dates from 6th Century and the Celts. From Honfluer we visited the British D-Day landing beaches, Bilbao, Spain the Guggenheim Art Museum.

Fitting in a short end of year holiday in October 2022, Cherryl Browne, General Manager Cruise World and her son, cruised for the first time with Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines.

WE embarked on a 10-night voyage ex Dover to the coast of France and the Basque region of Northern Spain which included sailing the Gironde Estuary and Garonne River to Bordeaux, the Seine river to Rouen and down the coast to Bilbao, Spain. Our ship the Fred. Olsen Balmoral at only 45,537 tonnes, and sailing with less than 1000 passengers, is well suited for this type of coastal and river waterway cruising.

Fred.Olsen hand-crafts unique and different itineraries each year. This cruise had overnights in Bordeaux and Rouen, allowing time to do shore excursions and to

sightsee on our own. The central city area or Bordeaux is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Balmoral berthed 10 minutes’ walk along the river promenade to the Place de la Bourse, overlooking the famous

As part of their onboard Signature Experiences, Fred.Olsen has Journey Planners who curate a program of events with special guest speakers and ‘Taste of the Region’ specialities to support the destinations you are visiting. They hold talks and demonstrations as well as host breakfast or lunch groups for more in depth interaction. On focused scenic discovery cruises, they work with nature enthusiasts such as ORCA and Ocean Wildlife Encounters.

Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines is a boutique and small ship cruise line based out of the UK with 175 years of maritime history. They enjoy more returning guests that any other cruise line and feedback is about the unique itineraries, and how personable and friendly the experience is between guests and crew. Their 3 smaller ships, Bolette, Borealis, and Balmoral are elegantly designed, with a traditional ship feel and ambiance.

Fred.Olsen is well known for their cruises in Northern Europe –particularly the Scottish Isles, and Northern Light cruises; they operate cruises in the Mediterranean, and further afield to Africa and World Cruise voyages. 

NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE - NORWEGIAN VIVA LAUNCHING 2023

enjoy the highest staffing levels and space ratio of any new cruise ship in the contemporary and premium cruise categories.

NCL created The Haven by Norwegian® – a ship-within-a-ship concept for luxury-loving guests allowing you to enjoy all the facilities and activities of a big ship, while having a private area to retire back to. On Norwegian Viva this exclusive, ultra-premium, and keycard only access area has been redefined. The Haven’s public areas and 107 suites have been designed by a renowned Italian designer. The area features an expansive sundeck, a stunning infinity pool overlooking the ship’s wake and an outdoor spa with a glass-walled sauna and cold room.

THIS year you could be an inaugural guest onboard the brand-new Norwegian Viva on her inaugural cruise season in the Mediterranean starting June 2023.

Norwegian Cruise Line has been breaking the boundaries of traditional cruising for 55 years as an innovator in global cruise travel, and will soon unveil Norwegian Viva, the second of six brand-new Prima Class ships. She will be based in the Mediterranean cruising from the ports of Lisbon Portugal; Venice (from Trieste) and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy; and Athens (Piraeus), Greece.

Norwegian Viva is as much a destination as the places she will sail in. Mirroring the upscale design and structure of her sister ship Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva is also built by renowned Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri of Italy, and

debuts at 294 metres long, 142,500 gross tonnes and accommodates 3,219 guests. She boasts elevated onboard experiences, more wide-open spaces, thoughtful and stunning design. Guests will choose from a large range of accommodations including NCL’s largest inside, ocean view and balcony category staterooms, and

Norwegian Viva will sport a variety of recreational activities suited to all age groups, making her an ideal choice for multi-generational family group holidays. Meander along Ocean Boulevard, a 44,000 square foot outdoor walkway which wraps around the entire ship, or The Concourse boasting an outdoor sculpture garden, or on Oceanwalk’s glass bridges, and to infinity style pools at Infinity Beach. For the thrill seekers try out the fastest freefall-drop, dry slides at sea, and the largest three-level racetrack at sea. There is something for all ages and interest.

Norwegian Prima and Viva are pushing the boundaries of traditional cruise cuisine with elevated food and beverage experiences. A highlight is the Metropolitan Bar, NCL’s first sustainably focused bar which showcases more than 20 biodynamic wines produced using organic farming methods. The main dining restaurant options have been modernised, and Hudson’s Restaurant boasts 270-degree views overlooking the stern.

Norwegian Viva is set to live up to the excitement and records set by her sister ship. 

FROM THE POLES TO THE TROPICS

– BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS WITH A LUXURY SMALL SHIP CRUISE

In February 2022, going further south than any other ship has done before, Le Commandant Charcot, set a new world record reaching the extreme latitude of 78˚44.3’ South in the Bay of Whales in Antarctica’s Ross Sea.

Featured amongst her impressive polar repertoire is a halfcircumnavigation of the Antarctic Continent, Expeditions to the North Pole and a crossing of the renowned North West Passage.

However, fear not..if the icy realms at the ends of our earth don’t sound like your dream holiday, you will find over 400 different departures smattered in between. A leisurely small-ship voyage through the Mediterranean, a unique tropical exploration in the heart of Papua New Guinea, to a leisurely sojourn through the Islands of French Polynesia.

It seems that of particular interest at present, the landscapes and scenery of Tahiti are beckoning to the intrepid New Zealander, and, with direct flights linking Auckland to Tahiti’s capital, Papeete, it makes sense.

PONANT’s Tahitian specialty vessel, called Le Paul Gauguin, has offered single destination expertise since her inception in 1998. Options from 7 to 16-night explorations of this sub-tropical paradise.

WHEREAS expedition cruising was once something only for hardcore pioneers, PONANT offers luxury expedition and soft adventure cruising aboard sleek, stylish ships that can slip in and out of ports and tiny bays that are inaccessible to vessels carrying more than a few hundred guests.

PONANT ships are the height of understated elegance, inside and out. Every ship features a spa, wellstocked library, a heated swimming pool and a theatre for shows and guest speakers. Fine food and wines – French and international –

are served in the main dining room and the more casual venue. Better yet, they don’t sail with more than 330 guests.

While PONANT scores the No. 1 spot for Best Expedition Cruise Line, it is part of a rapidly growing trend that combines high levels of luxury with adventurous itineraries. PONANT has 34 years’ experience in the luxury expedition sector and its fleet has expanded from one vessel, the three-masted yacht Le Ponant, to 13 – including the latest edition, Le Commandant Charcot, a hybridelectric luxury icebreaker.

Paul Gauguin Asia-Pacific specialist Bianca Bratton reflects on her recent Tahitian voyage; “each day we were welcomed with new hues of blue, lush volcanic scenery and the faces of smiling locals. Exploring the low-lying atolls of the Tuamotu Archipelago and the iconic ports of the Society Islands by a small ship cruise, proved to be the most comprehensive (and economical) way to explore French Polynesia.”

From the poles to the tropics and each azure blue ocean in between, there’s been no better time to broaden your horizons and enjoy a PONANT small ship adventure. 

CHOOSE TO MUSE

Silversea prides themselves on their guest suite Butlers. If guests are travelling alone, or need some extra care, their Butler is a guardian angel. Whether assisting with a beautifully set table for in-suite dining, unpacking, laundry service, or shoe cleaning, your Butler is there to see to your comfort and needs. One afternoon we asked for champagne to be sent to our suite for a celebration - it came within minutes and was followed by another bottle the next day, and the next. Silversea do not charge for beverages onboard, so it was a lovely personal and thoughtful touch we enjoyed.

All accommodations on Silversea Muse are suites. Our Balcony Suite category was spacious with very comfy queensize bed, walk-in wardrobe, marbled bathroom with walk-in shower and separate bath, Bulgari bathroom products, and spacious balcony to enjoy those fresh sea breezes. Your suite is a haven to retire to and relax in. “

THERE is something uniquely satisfying about a smaller ship and that is the intimacy, the friendly camaraderie and excitement of smaller ports and off-the-beatentrack destinations. Silversea’s intimate, ultra-luxury ships can sail narrow waterways into the heart of a city and tie up right at the pier while others must anchor offshore.

Silverseas Silver Muse has been cruising ‘down under’ during our 2023 summer. At 596 passengers she is small enough to offer a cruising experience that is big on warm personalised service, and interesting itineraries.

Bronwyn Towersey, Business Development Manager for Cruise World, cruised onboard Silversea Muse around New Zealand. “The ship exudes European style and flair, and within the few minutes of

being on board, we were greeted by our personal Butler ‘Lori’, offered a hand towel to refresh our hands, followed by a glass of Monopole Heidsieck champagne. This is standard procedure for Silverseas – to make guests feel extra special, and we certainly did.

Silver Muse has eight dining venues including the aromatic Asian fusion cuisine in Indochine, butter sauce drizzled over Lobster Tail in Atlantide, fine dining in Silver Note, delightful Japanese Sashimi and Sushi presented as small works of art, and simple fare of superb crispy crust pizza poolside. Towersey says “The biggest decision of the day was where we were going to dine that night, and the specialty coffees, international wine collection, cocktails, that delicious free flowing champagne, and choices for a nightcap to round off the day, was an absolute treat.” The ship provides a wonderful cruising holiday, paired with dynamic destinations where Silversea explores and showcases the culture, cuisine, history, people, wildlife and landscapes. Towersey recommends a New Zealand cruise to “see our own backyard from a different perspective”. 

TAUCK – TRAVEL BEYOND ORDINARY

Tauck finds new ways to experience the destination and introduces meticulously crafted and orchestrated itineraries.

In September, Tauck launches ‘A Grand Rail Adventure’, 8 days from Vienna to Milan. A remarkable rail odyssey through Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and Lichtenstein in search of art, castles, wine, and cuisines, travelling some of the most scenic mountain railways in Europe. Three nights are aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express train. Exclusively for Tauck guests, it evokes the Golden Age of European train travel across the Continent. Exclusive tour experiences include a private Imperial Reception, after-hours tour and dinner at Schönbrunn Palace, and a hands-on cooking lesson at a cascina near Milan.

TAUCK a family-owned travel company of nearly 98 years operates land journeys, small ship cruises, and river boat cruises across 7 continents, in over 100 destinations and to 70+ countries. Tauck remains true to its values and vision to always do the right thing, deliver more than what’s expected, to embrace change, and continually find new ways to enhance their travel experiences.

For Tauck, it’s not just about the places visited – it’s how you experience them. Unique and exclusive access sets them apart with authentic, intimate experiences connecting you more deeply to destinations and the people you meet, going behind the scenes to must-see sites and places generally not open to the public, often at times without the crowds. On a Danube River cruise guests rave about the exclusive evening at Palais Pallavincini with silver service dinner in a gilded ballroom,

music by chamber ensemble and dancing.

Tauck shows you the world differently than you can see it on your own – it’s the difference between a trip and the trip of a lifetime. Always innovating, surprising with the unexpected,

In 2023, Tauck celebrates 20 years of sharing the world with families through the Bridges Family program of tours and cruises. Designed to help multigenerational families connect through travel, by managing all the logistics and challenges of travel, it leaves families free to share great memories together.

Tauck’s President Jennifer Tombaugh shares a personal reflection on why generational family travel is so special.

“For family and multi-generational families travelling with Tauck – they appreciate the ease of having someone else do the planning and daily organising. I’ve never been happier traveling with my family than when, after 10 beautiful (exhausting, for me) days in Switzerland, which I spent organizing and executing with my husband, we then arrived aboard Tauck’s Blue Danube family river cruise. Everything was beautifully planned, and we could all laugh, have a great time and relax. It was a gift for all of us. It allowed us all to be truly present with each other, and we still talk about that trip.” 

A LATER LIFE JOURNEY

First published in Tui Motu Interislands, May 2022, and is reprinted here with the author’s permission.

I’VE loved this house passionately for 21 years. And here I am choosing to leave it. It started six months ago. I sorted through a couple of boxes of papers (life was lived on paper till the late 90s), then the thought: Anyone would think I was going somewhere. Followed immediately by – ‘Do it now!’ Really? Thinking it through. At almost 80, I am tired of climbing stairs and maintaining a house and garden. Offspring are mostly not geographically accessible and hugely busy. There’s a brand-new retirement village 5k down the road – life needn’t change that much. Isn’t it better to make this

decision for myself rather than wait till someone has to make it for me? Sorting my belongings myself, not leaving it to others. Praying through all this. Discovering close friends are going there too. Eventual ongoing care would be available. The company’s a good philosophical match – no shareholders, an excellent reputation as an employer, sustainable materials and methodology in the build. Signing up.

Then the distilling of my life treasures and memories to fit into half the space I now have. Actively choosing to let things go as part of the spiritual and material preparation for my next life-phase. Wondering deeply about good homes for special things.

Three of those choices will remain as satisfactions. Antiquities

collected by my father on wartime service in Palestine have gone to the Classics Department Museum at Victoria University where I studied. Three bits of terracotta, one with hieroglyphic writing, assessed as from 2000 BC, are from Ur where Abraham was born about that time. Such a powerful connection with my faith roots!

Two of my art works about healing have gone to Women’s Refuge. A circle of little clay women that had been broken, carefully mended and were ‘Dancing Anyway’. The other, a painting called Becoming Whyse on the many ‘Whys’ of grief.

Then there’s the local kindergarten who delightedly receive all sorts of things – scrap paper, ice-cream containers, craft stuff that I might have used but didn’t, a shell collection and much more. A wonderful symbiosis!

And of course, lots to family, including family history and

treasures, now passed on to the next generation. All an acknowledgement of the reality of death, not discernably imminent, but inevitable. I’ve been drawing on the lilies of the field and the birds of the air, and on Buddhist wisdom for easier aging: Don’t cling – to possessions, opinions, self-image and more. Sadness at realising that the wedding era oak bedroom suite can’t be fitted in to the apartment. Don’t cling! Actively detaching from my beautiful home with the colours I chose still singing to me, all day sun, the stunning view of harbour, mountains and Cook Strait.

Choosing to believe it is time for someone else to have these joys. Don’t cling!

Discovering three people from church are going there too, one of whom will be my next-door neighbour. With the friends, a good basis for a new community. Then the panic about all the things that won’t work for me. The horrible grey carpet – I commented on this to a wise son. His reply: ‘It is a very firstworld problem, isn’t it?’ Of course! Don’t cling! The prospect of early morning truck noise from the nextdoor supermarket. Replace horror with ‘These guys have driven all

night so we can have food.’ A real urge to pull out. Prayer for wisdom. The response: ‘That’s where I want you’. Acceptance and peace.

My beloved long-dead motherin-law has been a role model in this, as in so much else. She was a dedicated Franciscan tertiary. I, as her main carer, was off overseas for two months, and expressed concern for her well-being. ‘Oh’, she said, ‘I’d better go into care. Pass me the phone book’. I spluttered ‘But, but..’ It happened quickly. She loved it. I overheard a conversation between her and another new resident: ‘Columba, don’t you miss your house? I miss mine dreadfully’. Response: ‘No - I’m a Catholic.’ I knew exactly what she meant, but laughed as I imagined the poor questioner’s bafflement.

Choosing our own timing was our way – others make their choices differently and must do what’s right for them. 

AN INTERVIEW WITH ADAM YATES – CEO OF KARAKA PINES VILLAGES

How long have you worked in the retirement village industry?

Over 24 years ago, starting as CEO of Manor Group developing and managing aged care facilities, retirement units and serviced apartments.

What is different about a Karaka Pines Village?

Other retirement villages operate traditionally, where residents pay a large fee for the services and facilities provided but don’t get any capital gain on their home. I don’t think that is very fair.

One of the things I noticed as CEO of Manor Group was the

number of people who wanted to move into one of our units or apartments, but who couldn’t afford to leave the village that they were currently living in. They were trapped in a sort of financial servitude. That was a huge wake up call for me. So, I asked myself:

“Can a retirement village be developed profitably without taking the resident’s capital gain?“

The answer was yes, and so that’s what I did. Kempton Park Village was registered in 2011. Roseland Park was started a few years later and Woodcroft Estate in 2016.

JOIN THE RETIREMENT REVOLUTION

I left Manor Group in 2017 to form Karaka Pines Villages and took the principle of residents keeping their capital gain with me. There are now seven Karaka Pines Villages nationwide.

What do you love most about your role?

Making a connection with our residents and ensuring our villages have a positive impact on their lives. I want residents to thrive in our villages and enjoy their homes. Ensuring residents retain their capital gain is just one example of being able to show residents how much we value them. 

“Fair value has been a hot topic around retirement communities recently. Capital gain is just one thing we’ve always offered, unlike most retirement villages. It gives residents more flexibility and confidence that they still have some equity in their home if needed.”

FINDING PURPOSE THROUGH ADVERSITY

people who have suffered cancer know, or those that have supported someone with cancer know, the treatment is just the beginning of the journey. Chemotherapy doesn’t build people up, it breaks them down – ravaging the body to get the cancer. In many ways, the hardest and longest part of the journey is what comes after the chemo and radiation stops. The start of a long road back to wellness.

“I came from a pharmaceutical background, so I knew the power of modern drugs. But there was a point where chemicals weren’t enough, and my recovery stalled. At that point, I knew I needed to try to use the power of nature to help me find my way back to wellness. But getting good information and support on my journey was nearly impossible. I spent years studying options and learning about what was available to me.”

JESSIE Shi is on a mission to change wellness in New Zealand forever. That sounds like a lofty ambition, but it’s one that comes from a commitment ignited by adversity. Jessie was only thirty years old when she heard the news no one at any age wants to hear.

In Jessie’s words, “Everything was going fine. I was six months pregnant, happily married, healthy, and excited about what my future might hold. Then everything changed in an instant. I went in for my six-month scan and noticed the doctor’s response was off. They suddenly looked worried, and I immediately started to get a dreadful feeling about my baby. Was she okay? The thoughts were frankly terrifying. My doctor assured me my baby was doing okay, but they wanted to do some more tests. Two hours later, a nightmare I could never imagine had been realised. The doctors had discovered a

tumour bigger than my baby’s head around my uterus.”

Jessie’s journey then took an unimaginable turn. She had emergency surgery to save her baby and remove a cancerous tumour. She then had to undergo many months of debilitating treatment at a time when she should have been developing a healthy bond with her daughter.

Jessie had to give most of her energy to make sure she could be around to see her grow and develop as a person. But, as most

As Jessie gradually regained her strength and her connection to her family, she decided she could make a difference to New Zealanders by sharing her experience and newfound knowledge to help people live healthier lives. And through that journey, AJE Healthcare started. Jessie’s mission was to make natural healthcare easy to understand and effective in helping people live their best lives.

The first brand to join AJE was Gold Health – a trusted brand with a loyal customer base and a superior quality range of products. Gold Health has traditionally targeted the mature New Zealand customer segment, albeit the products are relevant for any age. But this is just the beginning for Jessie. This ambitious and driven female leader is determined to grow her business, serve her customers delightfully, and make natural healthcare accessible to all New Zealanders. Seeing her passion and hearing her story certainly inspires the belief that she’ll be successful. 

FOOD ... THE SUMMER DISCUSSION

AT EAT we produce fresh, delicious, wholesome meals. Our customers are a wide and varied group. Our meals are purchased for daily sustenance or as gifts for family and friends. They are bought by a wide range of customers: people that can’t cook; people that can cook but won’t cook; people who forget to cook; older customers; younger customers; young adults starting university; new parents exhausted by their new arrival; families renovating their homes; people who are unwell or have limited movement and can’t spend hours in the kitchen; people who live on their own, where making a roast or a casserole-for-one is more effort than it’s worth and generates unaffordable waste; busy professionals; husbands with wives on holidays, or wives with husbands on holidays; people visiting family in hospital; and people who outsource as many jobs from their life as possible, for a less exhausting existence.

You may think that winter would be our busy period... days are short and the weather is cold ... what better than a delicious casserole and steamed pudding to snuggle down with! However, it is actually post-Christmas when new customers generally find us – It is after the holiday break, when people have been relaxing and

catching up with each other. This is when they discuss the health and wellbeing of their families or talk about how busy and time-poor they are; how exhausted they are in the evening … too exhausted to cook. Then, come February, our next cohort of fabulous customers start making their enquires on the back of recommendations from friends and family. Whether it’s a concern that mum or dad isn’t eating well, or after discussing the economics of making meals in a cost-of-livingcrisis; EAT gets the nod as the nutritious and affordable solution.

A few weeks ago I was helping

a family organise some meals for their mum because they were concerned that she may not be eating well... they didn’t know this for sure, but the fridge never had much in it. They decided to put three meals in her fridge each week and then see if they were still there at the end of the week. They had previously bought frozen meals from the supermarket, but these just sat in the freezer, untouched: This is often the case with frozen meals … they have a long expiry, but are often not very appealing and you forget they are there! However, meals in the fridge are ready to go … they need to be eaten within a week, but you are reminded they are there several times a day, when you open your fridge. The first week’s meals arrived; they were put in the fridge and, when the family checked a few days later, the meals were gone. The feedback from their mother was that they were delicious and mum could barely wait to see what was to come next week. The same family also told me that they were referred by a friend who is a carer who visits the houses of a variety of clients, to help prepare meals … of all the meal brands she plates up for her clients, she recommended EAT. She said “go with EAT. The food looks, good, smells good, I can tell what each component on the plate is (there are some dinners where you can not) and the plate always comes back clean. They are honestly the best!” And so it starts... If you haven’t tried EAT yet, perhaps make it your new year’s resolution!

EAT make 9 delicious, fresh , readyto-heat-and-eat meals, 3 soups and a selection of desserts and baking for weekly delivery nationwide. Our menu changes each week. There are no subscriptions and no minimum order (delivery fees apply). Visit www.eat.co.nz or call one of the lovely ladies in the office (yes a real person) on 0800 328333 to order … then get EATing! 

CELEBRATING HEARING AWARENESS MONTH – WITH AUDIKA!

MARCH is Hearing Awareness

Month, a timely reminder of the many benefits of maintaining good hearing, for life.

Hearing Awareness Month is an annual campaign to promote ear and hearing care worldwide. This month we also celebrate World Hearing Day on 3 March. With a 2023 theme of ‘Ear and hearing care for all’, this global initiative from the World Health Organisation provides a reminder to get your hearing checked – wherever you are around the world.

This year’s theme of ‘Ear and hearing care for all’ highlights the importance of integrating hearing care within primary care, and ensuring it’s made an essential component of your regular health care checkups.

However, according to research1 commissioned by Audika, Kiwis are not leading the pack when it comes to looking after their ears. 53

per cent of New Zealanders believe they have some degree of hearing loss – yet only one in four intend to book a hearing test.

Regular health checks are so important – it’s a truth we are all aware of. But all those medical appointments can be time consuming. So why prioritise hearing health?

We lent our ear to 24,000 individuals globally to find out how hearing can impact your quality of life2. We found that people with hearing aids more often reporting having a good quality of life than people with hearing loss and no hearing aids. 1 in 4 say there is less stress on their relationships.

Getting a hearing health check is a step towards a healthier, happier life. Should you receive a hearing loss diagnosis, you’ll be able to discuss the option of a 2-week free trial of a hearing device with your clinician. That means you will have the time to experience the

difference it can make to your life, in your own home, surrounded by loved ones.

Eligibility for and exact hearing aid model selected for the trial is

dependent on the hearing and lifestyle needs determined at the discretion of our qualified clinicians.

In recognition of World Hearing Day, Audika is encouraging all New

Zealanders to ‘love their ears’ and book a free3 hearing check. Are you ready to take the next step towards better hearing health?

Speak to our expert team today. Book a free hearing check and find out more about our free 2-week hearing aid trial. 

SIR MURRAY HALBERG (1933- 2022): “CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.”

the mounting threshold of fatigue. Follow the leader. Put off the evil moment, and keep faith in a last lap sprint, and the weariness of others. An emotional furnace, with the runners in a nervous lather of indecision.

But one runner in black had already made his decision, as he marshalled his killer instinct. For Halberg the evil moment could wait no longer. Suddenly he detonated some internal fireworks. Against all traditions of the event, Halberg flicked a switch marked willpower and swiftly broke into a much higher cadence. He had figured he would make his break when the knife was sharpest. When the Germans and the Pole had their dithering doubts.

Halberg came from behind, moved out a lap and a half and into the position of front runner. The lap took but 61 seconds of the Omega Swiss timers, when the average time of the preceding laps were churned out in around 66 seconds.

The author, Vern Walker, was a nationally-ranked distance runner, and competed against Murray Halberg on numerous occasions.

MURRAY Halberg’s performances as the world’s leading distance runner were enhanced by a brand of savage determination. This was most graphically demonstrated when he won the 5000 metres event at the 1960 Olympic Games held in Rome.

5.10pm, Friday 2 September: The twelve finalists heard the call: “Ai vostri posti.” “On your marks.” Facing Halberg were competitors from Poland, Australia, Kenya, France, Italy, Hungary, Russia, and three runners from Germany. Twelve and a half laps of the orange coloured

cinders faced the field.

The Australian veteran, Dave Power took over the front running. Still, Halberg lurked in twelfth spot. Continually the file of runners in front of him stretched and shrank as they surged. Then the East German, Hans Grodotski put his foot down and sharpened the pace. A beautifully smooth runner with his blonded hair flopping up and down to his rhythmic flow.

There then came a phase of deliberation. With three laps still to run, it was too far from the finish to try and make a break on the field. A stanza in the 5,000 metres when any decisive tactical bursts were too challenging to even contemplate, since the brain was being sand-papered away due to

The field failed to respond and Halberg had surprisingly put a precious 25 metres between him and the three runners chasing him. Only Grodotski reacted and set out to chase the New Zealander, with the slender shoulders and powerful thighs.

For the group of Kiwi track fans seated near the 200 metres mark the next two minutes were a nervous ordeal as they screamed their encouragement and tried to fortify their hopes. On the other hand, thousands of spectators in the vast open bowl of the Stadio Olimpico were voicing their doubts: “Does that skinny guy in black know what he is doing? Has he miscounted the laps?” As Halberg desperately strove to maintain his precious lead a conversation between two Italians, could have gone something like this: “Gee, Giuseppe, he could be the winner. He seems to have more speed

than Caesar’s sandals” His friend Mario quickly responded: “But he could die like Julius Caesar: suddenly.” Tongue-in-cheek though this may be, it did turn out to be a gladiatorial contest.

If on lap ten, Halberg looked a world-beater, the final two laps would prise open a crack of fallibility as Grodotski took off in his quest to catch Halberg. In front of the German was a gap of around 12 metres. It was now a two man contest for the gold medal as 70,000 spectators roared their encouragement. The blocks of East Germans howled out in unison: GRO-DOT-SKI, GRO-DOT-SKI, GRODOT-SKI.

Ominously, Halberg’s eleventh lap took 65.5 seconds. He was slowing and Grodotski was ever so slowly gaining. Normally the lead runner can hear the rasp of the footfalls of the chasing runner upon the cinders. But the stadium was in an

uproar, and Halberg could not hear the chasing German. So on every bend Halberg snatched a quick left-hand backward glance to see where the German was. This may well have translated to the German that Halberg was now having his own doubts.

Down the straight to the bell. Grodotski, the hunter was now inexorably chasing down Halberg, the hunted. By now the lifting muscles of Halberg’s thighs must have seemed to be as heavy as grand pianos. Each stride must have seemed like an expedition. Down the back straight with the German still gaining, gaining, gaining. Halberg’s face was now salt-white against the black of his uniform. Into the final straight and Grodotski was now only nine metres away. But finally, for Halberg eight metres was just enough. The gold medal was his. Limp as a wet rag he tottered off the cinders and on

What is a heart murmur?

A heart murmur is an extra, unusual sound in your heartbeat that happens when your blood doesn’t flow smoothly through your heart.

Abnormal heart murmurs can be a sign of heart valve disease, a potentially fatal condition that is treatable if caught quickly.

The only way to know for sure is by asking your doctor for an echocardiogram, a simple, painless heart ultrasound that could save your life.

to the grass infield. Just 1.2 seconds separated Halberg from the chasing German. The first person to reach the exhausted Halberg was Peter Snell.

So what did our Kiwi athletic heroes do to avoid all the backslapping and the kudos? Snell and Halberg hitched a ride to the ruins of Pompeii, and booked into a hotel in the seaside resort of Sorrento, followed by water transport to the Isle of Capri. They enjoyed the first fruits of their successes. They were quickly recognised at reception, and were up-graded to a much better room!

Fast forward to today. Halberg’s feats of athleticism are perpetuated in the recently completed Murray Halberg Retirement Village, located in Lynfield, Auckland. In the public areas of this village are many large photographs depicting him, as we all recall him: racing and beating the opposition. 

CRAMPSTOP

CRAMPSTOP for any kind of cramp is an essential addition to your medicine cupboard.

It’s 100% natural and safe, even during pregnancy.

Make sure you always have some on hand, just one spray for instant relief!

The chances of getting cramp increase over time. The changes that occur in our bodies as we age make us a prime target for muscle cramps. The older you get, the more likely you may begin to get cramp on a regular basis.

One of the reasons for this is dehydration.

Dehydration

We naturally lose water daily through breathing, working in air conditioned rooms and drinking coffee or other sugary drinks which are actually very dehydrating. We also lose water from the more obvious like sweating, urination, vomiting and bowel movements.

The general effects of dehydration are feeling lethargic and run down.

It occurs when our bodies are losing more fluid than we are putting in. You shouldn’t ever ignore any lethargic feelings as being dehydrated can lead to serious health concerns. It’s so important for our bodies and general health to make sure we are drinking enough water regularly.

Common signs of dehydration are:

• muscle cramps

• dry mouth

• headaches

• dry skin

• decreased or dark yellow urine output

• moodiness

• difficulty concentrating

You may also think you are hungry – how often do we gravitate to the biscuit tin for a sugary snack to fill that need? You are more likely to actually be dehydrated in this case, not hungry at all!

One of the first things to try if you are getting regular cramp is to up

TO PITCAIRN ISLAND

NOT

many people can say they have ticked Pitcairn Island off their bucket travel list. It’s not a matter of jumping on a plane and arriving in Pitcairn Island a few hours later. There is no air strip on Pitcairn Island and the only way to visit is by ship! Aside from the cargo ship that visits on a rotational basis throughout the year, the only way to visit Pitcairn Island is by cruise ship.

Some cruise lines call into Pitcairn Island en-route between French

Polynesia and South America, often combining Pitcairn with a stop at Easter Island. Twice in 2023 and just once in 2024, however, Aranui 5 will make a special voyage to Pitcairn Island, heading out from Papeete , via the Tuamotu Islands to Mangareva in the Gambier Islands. From there, it’s across to Pitcairn Island, returning back to Papeete with two more stops on the way home.

It’s an amazing adventure, visiting parts of the world not many see.

You’ll wonder why more people don’t know about these incredibly beautiful, remote islands with long stretches of powdery white sand and impossibly blue lagoons and where life moves at a much slower pace.

On Pitcairn Island, home of less than 50 people, there are no cars or traffic lights – quad bikes are the go-to in this part of the world! You’ll see why this island was the perfect spot for Fletcher Christian and friends to hide away from the rest of the world after the Bounty mutiny and discover the remnants and artefacts dating back to this historic period. Today, you’ll discover a unique community living a remote and isolated lifestyle without the hustle and bustle of modern life. There really isn’t any place else like it in the world!

The ship is comfortable with a relaxed ambiance and a friendly, hospitable crew who will be serving you a drink at the bar one minute,

then picking up a ukulele for a sing-a-long the next. There are no casinos or nightclubs aboard the Aranui 5 – it’s more about chatting with new friends over a drink on the deck, a swim in the pool, learning the songs and culture from the crew and enjoying some excellent French Polynesian hospitality.

The cruise package is fully inclusive of airfares, transfers, precruise accommodation, 10 night cruise, all meals on board, wine with

lunch and dinner, shore excursions and more.

With less than 100 cabins and just two voyages to Pitcairn each year, these cruises sell out very quickly. Book by 28 February 2023 for February 2024 and save 10% but be quick – these cruises sell out quickly!

INFLATION HURTING RETIREES ON FIXED INCOMES

IN June 2022 the Massey University Fin-Ed Centre released its Annual Update to the New Zealand Retirement Expenditure Guidelines. The Centre aims to empower New Zealanders to make more financially savvy decisions – giving people the tools they need for the life-long process of managing their finances.

The New Zealand Retirement Expenditure Guidelines – as at 30 June 2022 – are prepared from Statistics New Zealand’s triennial 2018/19 Household Economic Survey for the year ended 30 June 2019.

The June Update noted that current high inflation particularly concerns Kiwis in or near retirement, eroding purchasing power and reducing the value of their investments.

The Update commented that interest rate increases resulting from attempts by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and other central banks globally to combat inflation, may negatively impact the value of fixed income investments held in KiwiSaver and other managed funds. This means, KiwiSaver members are seeing their KiwiSaver account balances drop.

Retirees are likely to have a greater proportion of fixed income investments in their portfolios, due to the lower volatility of this asset class, which is preferred for those at this life stage.

The Update notes the main contributors to continued cost

increases for retirees for the twelve months ended 30 June 2022 were transport (with inflation of 14.5%), housing and household utilities (rising 9.1%), and food (up 6.5%).

Inflation is at levels last seen in the early 1990s. Long-term bond rates of 4% suggest investment values will continue to be eroded for some time, which may encourage diligent investors to make their nest egg work harder.

Significant demand from baby boomers is driving the thriving senior living sector, which offers a long-proven record of generating attractive income for Kiwi investors.

John Jackson, Executive Director of the Senior Trust Retirement Village Income Generator, has been involved in the investment

sector for more than two decades. He believes the growing surge in demand for quality modern retirement villages reflects the concerns of many senior New Zealanders about social isolation, security, and a desire for a good life in their golden years.

Senior Trust focuses on this segment of the industry, supporting and funding experienced, capable operators who deliver quality retirement villages at the premium end of the market.

Building wealth and wellbeing, to help Kiwis live more comfortable lives.

ADJUSTABLE BEDS – EASE AND COMFORT AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON

Buying a new bed is an important decision and not one that should be rushed. These days there are so many options, it can be hard to decide on just one. An adjustable bed is a great solution. With an adjustable bed you can move the bed to your desired sleeping position and there’s added benefits such as being able to raise your head to read. When you buy an adjustable bed, you’re buying a bed that can be altered to exactly what you want.

Features and Benefits

• Being able to adjust your bed can help with health issues such as poor circulation, heart burn and breathing problems.

• If you and your partner prefer to sleep in different positions, you can choose a split model. With a split bed base, each side of the bed can be independently moved –one person can have the bed laid flat to sleep while the other can lift the back up and read in bed at the same time.

• Another advantage of a split bed is that you and your partner can each select the mattress comfort you desire – even if one person prefers super firm and the other likes their mattress soft, there’s no compromise needed.

• The base can be paired with different customisable headboard styles to suit your bedroom décor. Select from upholstered headboards or beautifully crafted timber designs.

As well as having movement features, upgraded models have additional functions such as vibrating massage settings, speakers, Bluetooth capability and under bed lighting. You deserve a rejuvenating, restful sleep every night. Head into your local Harvey Norman and let our sleep experts help find the perfect bed for you – an adjustable bed might be just what you’re looking for.

its share of natural wonders.

THENorthern Territory (NT) is the heart of Australia’s vast famed outback. This is Crocodile Dundee country, wild and rugged, a land of stunning contrasts and bush wetlands contrast with spectacular gorges and desert landscapes and a haven of unspoiled beauty.

Unlike most of Australia, the Northern Territory experiences just two seasons, wet and dry which are both equally diverse. The wet season from November to April brings monsoon rains with high humidity and watercourses that constantly spill over making roads and tracks inaccessible. The dry season from May to October signals the start for Southern Australians to

head north for the drier and more equitable temperatures. Here the waters recede, the rivers become streams but the influx of people at some of the most popular tourist attractions make this a vibrant place to visit.

Darwin itself is very much a tropical holiday destination that has a certain obscurity. Often referred to as the Top End, Darwin itself juts out on a flat peninsula and is completely isolated. Not only the capital of the Northern Territory but it’s also strategically important with its nearest neighbour being Indonesia just 600 kilometres away. It was no surprise to see a large military base here.

For most Australians this easy

going city is off the beaten track with a reputation for tropical cyclones and for having more lighting strikes than anywhere else in the world. It’s also a city that has been destroyed twice. The first occasion was during WW2 when the Japanese carried out eightytwo bomb raids but it was Xmas day in 1974 when Cyclone Tracy struck devastating 90% of the entire buildings. Sixty-six people lost their lives with forty-six-thousand airlifted to the south. Forty-nine-years on Cyclone Tracey is still the worst natural disaster in Australia’s living memory.

Perhaps the cyclone did the community a favour for the population returned three years later to a city rebuilt from rubble. Darwin today is vibrant, modern, clean and well laid out with wide open avenues, lush tropical vegetation of bougainvillea, frangipani, hibiscus and coconut palms and state-of-the-art architecture. Darwin continues to prosper with a number of new 5-star hotels, apartments and waterfront developments.

A visit to Darwin would not be complete without a visit to Kakadu National Park. It’s the largest National Park in Australia and without doubt the biggest attraction by far for the many tourists that visit Darwin each year. There are plenty of boat tours that will take you to the south of Alligator River,

to the Yellow Water River Billabong or a sailing boat to the north of Alligator River where you can to fish for barramundi. Of course you will see lots of crocodiles “salties to the locals” – an amazing experiences not to be missed!

Further East across the Alligator River lies the vast expanse of Arnhem which is owned and inhabited by the Aborigines and accessible only by permit. Kakadu National Park has World heritage status and is one of the most prominent National parks in Australia. To do justice to Kakadu allow at least three days. Its spread over twenty-thousand square

kilometres and is the traditional land of the Aboriginal clans.

Kakadu is also home to a thousand plants, hundreds of bird species and countless varieties of frogs, reptiles, mammals and fish that have been identified here. But much of Kakadu’s beauty lies in the rivers, billabongs, waterfalls and gorges. The Aborigines have lived here for over fifty-thousandyears and life goes on largely unchanged and uninterrupted as their traditions continue unchallenged by modern living. If you need a tangible reminder of the Aborigine’s presence the park also protects one of the finest and most extensive collections of rock art in the world. One of our greatest outback experiences was a visit to Ubirr to sight Aborigine rock paintings that are thousands of years old.

If time is not your enemy and you have a 4WD, another place to visit is Jim Jim Falls, a hugely spectacular waterfall that plunges 300 meters to the ground. The best time is during the rainy season although bear in mind the roads can be impassable.

There are also day tours by coach to Mary River, Yellow Water and Nourlangie Rock. Alternatively if you have no budget restraints a thirty-minute helicopter flight will provide a brief but enlightening introduction to this stunning area. One of the best places to stay is at the Crocodile Hotel. Famous for its design as it is set out in the shape of a crocodile. During one of our full day tours we sighted water buffalo, fruit bats and water lilies and if you have never seen crocodiles in the wild you are guaranteed to see them here basking in the sun along the river’s edge. If you’re really diligent the occasional pair of steel piercing eyes can be seen protruding just above the water line waiting patiently for their prey.

There is a long list of tours from Darwin at prices to suit to experience some excellent local

attractions like Wildlife Park set in four-hundred-and-fifty-hectares of natural bushland. Not to be missed is the jumping crocodile tour home for scores of crocodiles that launch themselves out of the water to be fed by rangers.

As a standalone destination Darwin itself has plenty to offer. Mindi Beach Markets is transformed into a bustling colourful meeting

place from April to October on Thursday nights. On offer are arts and crafts, free entertainment and ethnic cuisine. The Wharf Precinct is in the heart of Darwin’s CBD where you can experience some of the city’s best eats and drinks. Other local sights include Parliament Building, upmarket dining at the Green Room at the original Darwin Hotel, the Aviation Heritage Centre,

Fanny Bay Gaol built in 1883 to house some of the States notorious criminals, Qantas Guinea Airways Hanger which was used for the first air service out of Darwin and Admiralty House home to Char Restaurant and the Darwin Club.

As a holiday destination we found Northern Territory to be something quite special. Although isolated it’s a location that has not been surpassed anywhere else that we know of. In all a truly wonderful experience that is just too good to be true. We plan to make another visit before it becomes too popular! 

STRONGER TOGETHER!

ATAIR CHATHAMS we love connecting Kiwis across the country. We’re a family owned and operated airline and we know the importance of being with family and friends, but we also know how important regional links throughout Aotearoa New Zealand are to our local businesses, whether it is vital supplies to remote communities, specialists and business people who need to get around the country, or industries that need to get their products to market, nationally or around the world.

And those regional links have never been more important than throughout the trying times of the pandemic, when a lot of livelihoods depended on being able to think outside of the box, work smart as well as hard, and keep locals in jobs.

At Air Chathams we’re looking forward to a busy Autumn, and in fact it has been a remarkably busy

year for us, with a full flight schedule and all our usual destinations taken up by both regular and new customers. And after the past few years it’s extremely heartening to see people getting back out and about, visiting family, having meetings in person instead of virtually, and taking that long awaited overseas trip.

Whilst it’s exciting times to be getting back to what we do best – connecting kiwis by air - it is still a very challenging time for the industry, with record high fuel prices, labour shortages, inflation, and constant international parts supply issues.

All of which drives up our operating costs and puts real pressure on our Air Chathams family to deliver the on-time performance we strive for dailyso please keep this in mind when travelling with us and if you can, share a kind word with your crew or via our feedback survey; it means the world to our team! 

POP QUIZ AT SUNNY LUNCH

Rather than attempting a whole-Club party around the busy, silly season, Karori Probus Club held a Spring lunch, in place of their October meeting. Even the weather played its part and the sun shone for the first time in several days. Each member was greeted with a free drink voucher and a beautiful lunch spread, catered by Elaine.

President Murray welcomed 62 members and guests, and Melvina surprised the crowd with a quiz – which was hard enough that no table got 100%. Members reported feeling very confident before the quiz… but much less so during. It was a great gathering to mix and mingle and, if the sounds of laughter and chatter were any indication, the afternoon was a great success!

MELODIES AND MOVEMENT AT MALVERN MORNING TEA

With great food and amazing entertainment, a good time was had by all!
